From L. K. Armstrong, Secretary of the Columbia Section of the Institute, we have received information as to the activities and plan of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, which was recently organized under the joint auspices of the local sections of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and our own Institute. The first meeting was held on September 20, at which a program for the following year was adopted. The, meeting was then conducted by the Civil Engineers., the principal business being the reading of a report by Mr. Flinn, Secretary of the United Engineering Society. The second meeting was held on October 18, of which the Columbia, Section of our Institute took charge. According to the program adopted, meetings will be held regularly on the third Friday of each month, except June, July and August. It is understood that these meetings shall not interfere with nor abridge the independent activity of the participating societies. The proposed work of the Association is to be conducted by a large number of committees, whose attention will be devoted to such subjects as the following: Municipal, Highways, Resources, Manufacture and Industries, Legislative, Educational, National and State, Patents and Inventions, Americanization, Safety and Rehabilitation, Research, Emergency. When all of these committees shall have been filled, and their work begun, it is expected that the engineers of Spokane and vicinity may take a more active part in things affecting human welfare in that vicinity.

PROBABLY no greater world traveler has ever been Chairman of one of the Institute's Divisions than Henry Frederick Hebley. To begin with, he was born almost as far away as possible-in Christchurch, New Zealand, Dec. 15, 1893. There he grew up, studying mechanical engineering at the local Seddon Memorial Technical College. Then he went over to Sydney, Australia, for a bit of work before sailing for the U.S.A. in 1915. After a few months as draftsman in a San Francisco office he moved over to Clarkdale, Ariz., in the engineering department of the United Verde copper smelter, which had just gone into operation. But the war was on, and Henry thought he belonged in France with the Canadian Engineers, the United States still remaining aloof from the conflict, and that was the last the copper industry saw of him. After almost two years in France he was wounded, convalesced in England and Canada, and then went back to his native New Zealand to design concrete factory buildings. But soon the United States called again, and this time he landed in Salt Lake City with the Oregon Short Line R.R. Co. Then to Chicago in 1920. where he really got into the coal industry for good, working for the Allen K Garcia Co. on the design and operation of coal mines, beneficiation plants, and combustion equipment; and joining the Institute.

The effects of the growth precipitates on the su-perconduching properties of an Al- 15 al. pel Zu alloy have been studied using magneization, transition lem-perature, and residual resistivity measurements. Aging at 230C for 1/2 to 11 he produces an increase in Hfp, Ike field of first penetration, and tut increase in trapped flux. The upper critical field, Hc2 remains constant for such aging tunes. Aging at 200°C produces a decrease in Hfp and an increase in trapped flux. The transition temperature remains constant at Tc - 1.227° ± 0.02°K for aging at 220°C for tims of from 1/2 to 10 hr, and for aging at 200°C it remains constant at Tc. = 1.18° i 0.02°K for times from 1/2 hv to 26 hr. The observed behavior indicates that the superconducting matrix when aged at 220°C behaves tike a type U su-perconducior, but when aged at 200°C behares like a type I superconductor. The magnetization changes after aging can be attributed to the growth and clutnge in distribution of the precipitate in a matrix of fixed composition. IT has been realized for some time that the superconducting properties of alloys are highly structure-sensitive. This is evident in the work of Mould and Mapother1 who examined the properties of an aluminum alloy. Precipitation effects have also been briefly mentioned in other studies.2-4 Bonnin and coworkers5 have observed a sharp inc rease in trapped flux in an A1-Mg alloy when the residual resistivity reaches a value that indicates it is a type II superconductor. Recently Blanc, Goodman, and Nemoz5p have reported on precipitation effects in A1-Ag alloys. Detailed studies of precipitation in Pb-Sn and Pb-Cd alloys made by Livingston6 serve to show that the upper critical fields are enhanced by quenched-in solute. Furthermore. at various stages in the precipitation process? the upper critical field is determined largely by the remanent solute. The observed magnetic hysteresis and trapped flux in such alloys result from the interaction between precipitate and the flux filaments in the mixed state. The flux trapping appears to depend largely on the precipitate distribution and is greater if the superconductor is type II than if it is type I. To examine the effect of precipitation in another alloy system, particularly one in which the composition of the superconducting phase does not change significantly during the course of precipitation, the Al-Zn system seems interesting, especially in view of the transition temperature and resistivity studies of Chiou and seraphim.' Furthermore, the recent detailed electron-microscope studies of an Al-Zn alloy by Richards and Garwood8 provide a guide for relating superconducting properties to changes in structure. For these reasons, magnetization, transition temperature, and residual resistivity measurements for varying times of heat treatment at two temperatures were made with a -15 at. pct Al-Zn alloy. The results are reported in this paper. I) EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used was prepared by Cominco Products Inc. from 99.9999 A1 and 99.999 Zn. It was chill-cast, swaged, and drawn to 0.125-in.-diam rod. The analyzed composition was 15.6 at. pct Zn (31.1 wt pct). A jeweler's saw was used to cut the 0.125-in.-diam rod into the 0.875-in. lengths needed for magnetization measurements. The ends of the cylinders were slightly beveled to remove the sharp edges. A portion of the original 0.125-in.-diam rod was drawn into 0.010-in.-diam wire and used for transition temperature measurements. Specimens were suspended from wires within a vertical furnace during heat treatment. All were homogenized at 500°C for a minimum of 3 days and subsequently solutionized for times in excess of 6 hr. The solutionizing temperature was held constant to +3°C. Individual specimens were homogenized, quenched, and aged several times and no effects indicating loss of zinc were noted. The suspended specimens were quenched by cutting the wires and allowing the specimens to fall into a silicone oil bath held at the aging temperature. They were then isothermally transforked by aging in the same bath used for quenching. After aging for the required time (approximately 10 min aging was necessary before the upper critical field reached a fixed value), they were briefly (1 to 2 sec) dipped into an acetone bath at room temperature to remove adherent oil and then immediately transferred to liquid nitrogen where they remained until inserted into the helium bath (usually within an hour). The temperature of the aging bath was held constant to +3°C for longer aging times. The cryostat used for the measurement of superconducting properties consisted of outer and inner dewars for liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, Stokes 6-in. booster diffusion pump and Stokes Model 212 mechanical pump, temperature controller to measure and control the temperature of the helium bath, and a superconducting solenoid with inserted search coils to provide the magnetic field and measure the magnetic moment of the specimens. A schematic diagram of the cryostat is shown in Fig. 1. An ultimate temperature of 0.85°K was reached with this apparatus. The aging characteristics of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy have been studied by means of light metallography together with density, Young&apos;s modulus, and hardness measurements. The results were consistent with the precipitation of a single intermetallic compound during aging; overaging was slow relative to that in other iron-based binary alloys. The solution treatment temperature had a small effect on the rate of hardening whereas deformation prior to aging had a marked effect on both the rate of hardening and the peak hardness. The density data indicate that the compound precipitated is Fe3MO2 and not the Laves phase Fe2Mo. Analysis of the modulus and density results gave values for the time exponent for precipitate growth of approximately 1.0 and 1.5 for the alloy aged with and without prior deformation, respectively. DETAILED studies of precipitation hardening in bcc matrices have been confined largely to the effects of carbides and nitrides. In view of this and the growing technological interest in intermetallic compound strengthening, e.g., in maraging steels, a study of precipitation in iron-based alloys with a low interstitial content has been undertaken. This paper is concerned with the aging behavior of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy; the mechanical behavior of the alloy will be reported later. The early work of sykes on Fe-Mo alloys showed that precipitation of the intermetallic compound was accompanied by an increase in hardness and a decrease in volume of the material. More recent surveys of the strengthening associated with precipitation have been made3-5 and, in particular, Elsen and wassermann4 showed that deformation prior to aging increased the rate of hardening. These latter workers also followed the precipitation process by means of dilatometry, electrical resistivity, and lattice parameter measurements. Their results confirmed that there is a decrease in volume on aging. Except for the work of Hornbogen on an Fe-20 at. pct Mo alloy, neither clustering nor the precipitation of a nonequilibrium phase has been observed in Fe-Mo alloys. Studies of alloys of lower molybdenum content475 indicate that the equilibrium intermetallic compound is precipitated during aging. However, there is some doubt concerning the nature of the equilibrium precipitate phase. According to the phase diagram constructed by Hansen,8 the phase should be precipitated. This phase has a rhombohedra1 crystal structure which is characterized by the formula Fe706,&apos; although the composition of the molybdenum-rich boundary corresponds approximately to Fe3Mo2. The version of the diagram proposed by Sinha, Buckley, and Hume-Rother indicates that the A phase, a Laves phase Fe2Mo, should be precipitated. Their observation of a Laves phase supports the earlier findings of Bechtoldt and Vacher,13 although, in a recent study of the system by means of diffusion couples, Rawlings and Newey did not detect the phase. The work presented here describes the effect of solution-treatment temperature, aging temperature, and prior deformation on the aging characteristics of the alloy as revealed by light metallography together with hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements. In addition the density data are used in an attempt to determine the compound precipitated during aging. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A 29-kg ingot of the alloy was cast at R.A.R.D.E., Fort Halstead, from deoxidized, Japanese electrolytic iron and sintered molybdenum. The ingot was homogenized for 6 hr at 1473°K and then worked, with intermediate anneals, into 6- and 16-mm-diam rods and 6-mm plate. Chemical analysis of the alloy gave, wt pct: Mo, 17.5 (11 at. pct); C, 0.003; Si, 0.002; S, 0.005; P, <0.002; and02, 0.0098. Solution treatments were carried out under a dynamic argon atmosphere in a vertical, "crusilite" element, furnace which had a facility for rapid quenching into iced water. Except for the study of the effect of solution treatment temperature, all specimens were solution-treated at 1573" * 2°K for 1 hr. Salt baths were used for the aging treatments. Specimens for hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements were produced, after heat treatment, from the stock rod or bar using a precision silicon carbide slitting wheel. As described later, the quenching treatment produced local plastic strain in the stock material; consequently, care was taken to ensure that the specimens were not prepared from these regions. Those specimens used in the studies of the effects of prior deformation on the aging behavior were strained in compression in a Denison universal testing machine. Specimens for light metallographic observations were mechanically polished on successively finer grades of diamond paste down to and then etched in either alcoholic ferric chloride or in a 2 pct nital solution. Vickers diamond pyramid hardness data were obtained using a 30-kg load. At least five impressions were averaged for each determination. Density measurements were made using a displacement technique in which each specimen was weighed in air and in dibromoethane at 296°K. The specimens were cylindrical and weighed 3 to 4 g; all weighings were made on a balance reading to 1 x 10"5 g. For each specimen the mean value of five weighings was used to calculate the density. The density of the dibromoethane was determined using the displacement procedure and a standard nickel specimen. The error in an absolute density value was estimated to be HI.01 pct. The relationship between the electromotive force (E.M.F.) across a shale barrier and the concentrations of sodium chloride solutions on either side has been investigated. It is shown that the action of a shale barrier is analogous to a glass membrane separating two acid solutions of different hydrogen ion concentrations. The shale behaves as a sodium electrode and is responsive to the activities of the sodium ions in the two solutions in such a way that the potential can be calculated by means of the Nernst equation. This conclusion is confirmed by laboratory experiments. In a borehole the total E.M.F. of a shale cell is the algebraic sum of the ~otential across the shale and a boundary potential. The relationship between total E.M.F. and the resistivity ratio of two sodium chloride solutions is indicated for a number of formation temperatures. The E.M.F. thus predicted is then compared with the .elf potential read from an electric log and good agreement is demonstrated. Based on both the self potential and resistivity curves of the electrical log. a method is given for calculating connate water content in a bed having in-tergranular porosity and containing both connate water and hydrocarbons. INTRODUCTION The first paper on electrical well logging by C. and M. Schlumberger and E. G. Leonardon in 1934&apos; attributed the self potential curve principally to streaming potentials, i.e. to electroki-netic effects. Almost immediately great difficulties were encountered in reconciling many of the curves they obtained with this interpretation. and a ~econd paper&apos; by the same authors soon appeared. In this second paper self potentials were attributed to the combined effects of streaming potentials and electrochemical potentials, the electrochemical potential being considered the result mainly of the interaction of fluids of differing salt concentrations, i.e. a boundary potential, and partly of potentials set up at the faces of impermeable materials. Some experiments involving a gray clay for the impermeable material were quated. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon deduced from the equation for a simple boundary ~otential that the electrochemical potential, as opposed to the electrokinetic potential, could be expressed in the form E=Klog- .......1 pe where K is a constant, pm the mud resistivity. p, the resistivity of the connate water in a porous bed. However, no general expression for the constant K was obtained. Although the literature between 1934 and 1943 contains a number of quotations of their results, the valuable work of the Schlumbergers and Leonardon was not extended so that the electrochemical potential has been generally attributed wholly to boundary potentials between the mud in the borehole and the connate waters in porous formations. Unfortunately, however, the fundamental premise of all these papers, that a boundary potential can give rise to current flow in a borehole, is thermodynamically untenable. As will be shown. the fact that the electrochemical potential can be fairly accurately express as E = K log pm/pc, a form in which a boundary potential may also be written, is partly fortuitous. The boundary potential is indeed an integral part of the expression for the electrochemical potential in a horehole, but in magnitude it represents only about 20% of the total potential. In 1943 an important step in the elucidation of electrochemical potentials was made by Mounce and Rust3 who showed that if a wall of shale separated two compartments which contained saline solutions of different concentrations, and if the two solutions were themselves brought into contact in the pores of a porous inert membrane (such as unglazed porcelain) a current flowed through the shale and saline solutions. The direction of positive current was from the shale into the more dilute solution. The paper of Mounce and Rust, while repeating some of the observations of the Schlumbergers and Leonardon, seems to be the first to show that the shale was the seat of a genuine electrochemical effect capable of causing current flow. In the same paper Mounce and Rust pointed out the similarity between the fundamental conditions of their experiment and the conditions which existed when a bed of shale in the ground was simultaneously in contact with a porous sand containing saline connate water and mud fluid of salinity different from that of the water in the sand. Since it is now generally recognized that the S.P. curve measures ohmic potential changes in the mud fluid in the well bore resulting from changes in current flow, it is apparent that currents having their origin in the electrochemical interaction of mud filtrate and connate waters with shale beds are a very important portion of the total S.P. The work of Mounce and Rusta and others appears to indicate that, in general, the electrochemical portion of a particular kick on a S.P. curve far exceeds any electrokinetic potentials resulting either from streaming potentials or Dorn effects. The Dorn effect, or sedimentation potential. arises when small particles are allowed to fall through certain fluids under the influence of gravity. a difference of potential being observe? between two electrodes placed at different levels in the stream of falling particles. The Dorn effect is unlikely to affect seriously the S.P. curve as now measured. A successful analysis of the electrochemical aspects of the S.P. log should

The vapor pressure of palladium over a series of Rlz-Pd alloys has been measured by the torsion-effusion method. The thermodynamic properties of the alloy system at 1575=K have been calculated from the vapor pressure data. The activities and the free energies of formation exhibit large positive deviations from ideal behavior. The enthalpies of formation are endother-mic. The entropies of formation are positive and larger than the ideal entropy of mixing. All of the thermodynamic properties suggest that a strong tendency toward phase separation exists in the solid solutions. The possible origin of the phase instability and the various factors that influence the thermodynamic properties are discussed. RECENT studies of the thermodynamic properties of alloys of palladium with nontransition elements have indicated that a significant contribution to the enthalpy of formation is related to the redistribution of the conduction electrons upon alloy formation.&apos;-&apos; The present work was undertaken to ascertain the importance of this contribution in Pd/transition-metal alloys. The Rh-Pd system was chosen for this investigation for several reasons: 1) The thermodynamics of the system were unknown. 2) Rhodium and palladium are completely soluble at high temperatures; below 1118OK the solid solution becomes immiscible.&apos;, 3) The difference in magnitude between the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium permitted the use of an existing effusion apparatus. 4) Additional information was known about the alloy system that would facilitate the interpretation of the thermodynamic results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermodynamic properties of the Rh-Pd alloy system were calculated from the vapor pressure of palladium over solid palladium and over several solid Rh-Pd alloys. The vapor pressure was measured by means of the torsion-effusion apparatus that has been described previously. In this method, an effusion cell is suspended from a tungsten filament inside a high-temperature furnace. Two orifices are located eccentrically such that the effusion of the vapor creates a rotational torque in the filament. The angle of rotation is directly related to the total vapor pressure within the cell. As the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium are approximately five orders of magnitude apart," the total vapor pressure was considered to be effectively equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure of palladium. The effusion cells were made from high-purity alumina since auxiliary experiments indicated that essentially no reaction occurs between alumina and solid Rh-Pd alloys. Unfortunately, because the orifices were irregular, an accurate calculation of the Free- man-Searcy correction factors" could not be made. The constants were determined in an independent experiment where the vapor pressure of copper, as measured in the alumina cell, was compared with an accurate value of the vapor pressure, which had been determined previously.4 Depletion of palladium from the surfaces of the specimens was minimal as the deflection of the cell remained constant, for at least 15 minutes, at each of the experimental temperatures. Lattice parameter measurements of the postrun alloys also indicated that no changes in the composition of the surfaces had occurred. The alloys were prepared by arc melting the requisite amounts of the 99.99 pct pure elements. The four most palladium-rich alloys were remelted in a levita-tion furnace since complete melting of the components had not occurred in the arc furnace. All of the alloys were subsequently homogenized at elevated temperatures in sealed alumina thimbles. After heat treatment, the alloys were analyzed chemically and were in essential agreement with the nominal compositions. The thermal histories and nominal compositions of the alloys are given in Table I. Lattice parameters of the heat-treated alloys were computed, by means of the method described by Mueller et a1. ,I2 from X-ray diffraction powder patterns obtained with filtered copper radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera. The results, which are tabulated in Table I, exhibit a slightly greater negative deviation from Vegards&apos; law than the values reported by Raub et al.13 The diffraction lines were sharp and well-resolved and thus indicated that the alloys were homogenous. RESULTS The logarithms of the individual values of the vapor pressure of palladium were fit, by the least-squares method, as a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperatures. The constants of the equations are given in Table I along with the temperature range over which the data was accumulated. The latent heat of vaporization at 298.15"K for pure palladium, calculated by the third-law method,14 showed no systematic temperature dependence. The average value of 88,920 * 20 cal per g-atom agrees favorably with the average of the results obtained in the most reliable previous investigations.15"19 The activities of palladium were computed from the vapor pressure data at 1525&apos;, 1575", and 1625OK. Consistent with the mass spectrometric study of the atomicity of palladium vapor,lg the vapor was assumed to be monoatomic. The activities of rhodium were determined by integrating the Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the a function.20 In the calculations, the activities of the pure solid metals were assigned the value of unity. From the activities, the partial and integral free energies, entropies, and enthalpies of formation at 1575° K were computed; they are assembled in Table 11.

The specific conductance and its temperature dependence were measured over the entire composition range of the molten Cu2S-CuCI system. At a typical temperature of 1200°C, 10 rnol pet of the ionically conducting CuCl reduced the specific conductance from about 77 ohm-lcm-l for pure Cu2S to about 32 ohm -1cm -1, and 50 mol pet CuCl reduced the conductance to that for pure CuCI—about 5 ohm 1cm1. The nature of electrical conduction in molten Cu2S, FeS, CuCI, and mixtures was studied by measuring the current efficiency of electrolysis at about 1100°C. The Cu2S, FeS, and mattes were found to conduct exclusively by electrons, but addition of 1 5 wt pet CUS to Cu2S produces a small amount of electrolysis. Addition of CuCl to Cu2S suppresses electronic conduction, and ionic conduction reaches almost 100 pet at a CuCl concentration of about 50 mol pet. These facts are interpreted in terms of electron energy level diagrams by analogy to the situation in solids. RESULTS of electrical conductivity studies on molten Cu-FeS mattes as a function of composition and temperature have been reported.&apos; The specific conductances ranged from about 100 ohm-&apos; cm-&apos; for pure Cu2S to 1500 ohm-&apos; cm-1 for pure FeS. This is in sharp contrast with the low specific conductance of molten ionic salts for which the transfer of electricity is by migration of ions in the field. In general, these ionically conducting molten salts, such as NaC1, KC1, CuC1, etc., have a specific conductance of the order of magnitude of 5 ohm-&apos; cm-&apos;. It was concluded on the basis of this evidence that molten FeS and Cu,S exhibit electronic conduction. Pure molten FeS has a small negative temperature coefficient of specific conductance, resembling metallic conduction, while pure molten Cu2S has a small positive temperature coefficient, resembling semi-conduction. The molten Cu2S-FeS mattes follow a roughly additive rule of mixtures, both with respect to specific conductance and temperature coefficient. Savelsberg2 has studied the electrolysis of molten Cu2S and Cu2S + FeS. He concluded that while molten Cu2S is an electronic conductor, there is some ionic conduction in molten Cu2S + FeS3 owing to the formation of the molecular compound 2Cu2S.FeS and its dissociation into Cu1 and FeS2-1 ions. The present work does not verify his results. Chipman, Inouye, and Tomlinson" have studied the specific conductance of molten FeO and report a high specific conductance, about 200 ohm-1 cm-1 of the same order of magnitude as that found for molten mattes, and a positive temperature coefficient. They interpret these results in terms of p-type semiconduction in the ionic liquid by analogy to the situation in solid FeO.1 imnad and Derne&apos; detected appreciable ionization in molten FeO by means of electrolytic cell efficiency measurements. In order to verify the conclusion that electrical conduction in molten Cu2S and mattes is electronic, and to gain further insight into the structure of molten sulfides, the following investigations were carried out in the present work: 1) The specific conductance, s of the molten system Cu2S-CuC1 was measured as a function of temperature over the entire composition range. As discussed later, molten CuCl is an ionic substance. It was thought that if molten Cu2S were simply ionic in nature, addition of small amounts of CuCl might not have a catastrophic effect in lowering the high conductance of the Cu2S. On the other hand, if much electronic conduction occurs, addition of the ionic CuCl should have a large effect in destroying the electronic conduction. 2) The electrolytic cell efficiency of the following molten systems was measured at about 1100°C in specially designed cells: Cu3; Cu2S + FeS, 50:50 by wt; FeS; Cu2S + CuS, 15 wt pet; Cu2S + CuC1, 5.9 to 46.4 mol pet; and CuC1. This gives a direct measure of the fraction of current carried by ions in these melts. Further, the cell efficiency, extrapolated to zero ionic current, is given by cell efficiency = (s leasile + s elexstronic). [1] s lucile for molten CulS would be expected to be no greater than that for molten CuC1, whose s lonle is about 5 ohm-&apos; cm-1, as will be seen in the following. u,.,,.,.,.......for molten Cu,S is of the order of 100 ohm-&apos; cm-&apos;.&apos; Thus, a large increase in cell efficiency from 0 to values of 10 to 100 pet upon addition of CuCl to Cu2S would indicate destruction of the electronic conductance. The variation of the dissolution behavior of a ferric oxide with calcining temperature has been investigated. Samples were prepared by thermal decomposition of ferric hydroxide, nitrate, oxalate, and sulfate at low temperature, followed by the calcination in the temperature range between 600" and 1200°C. The samples of eight series and a fine crystalline sample of hematite were dissolved in 1 N hydrochloric acid at 55.2°C and the results are represented on double-log graphs for convenience. It is confirmed that all dissolution courses follouj either the accelerated process or the parabolic process except in the special case of the crystalline hematite which dissolced in accordance with the uniform dissolution of a particle. Examinations of the physical properties of the oxide powders revealed that the surface area measured by the permeability method is strikingly relevant to the dissolution behavior of the oxide. In the previous paper,&apos; detailed data were presented on the effect of the kind of acid, the solution temperature, and the concentration of acid on the dissolution of two ferric oxides. It was also shown that these sam ples dissolved in strikingly different ways. The present investigation was carried out on the dissolution of various calcined samples prepared from various ferri salts by various methods to ascertain the course of dissolution. Pryor and Evans2 pointed out a change of the dissolution rate at around 700°C for a series of calcined ferric oxides prepared from the hydroxide. Several papers374 reported also the dissolution of ferric oxide samples. It seems, however, that a systematic account of the relationship between the dissolution behavior and physical properties of the oxide has not yet been given. This paper presents the variation of the dissolution of the oxide in relation to the calcining temperature and the change of physical properties of the calcines. EXPERIMENTAL Raw materials were prepared by precalcination of ferric hydroxide, thermal decomposition of ferric nitrate, oxalate, and sulfate, and aerial oxidation of ferric chloride vapor, at as low a temperature as possible. The products were crushed, ground, if necessary, and sieved with a 100-mesh Tylor screen prior to calcination, after which the specimens were dissolved in acid solution. The following is a detailed description of the preparation of the samples. Sample H. About 500 g of ferric chloride (guaranteed reagent) were dissolved in 5 liters of deionized water and filtered. Ferric hydroxide was precipitated by addition of the minimum amount of ammonium hydroxide solution, and the precipitate was washed continuously till chloride ion was not detected by silver nitrate solution, and then filtered. The filter cake was dried at 120°C for a week and ground, and the -100 mesh portion was used. Sample S. Ferric sulfate (guaranteed reagent) was pyrolytically decomposed in a crucible at 700°C for 24 hr and the product was sieved. In this case the following calcination was carried out at temperatures over 700°C. Sample B. Commercial ferric oxide (guaranteed reagent). About 15 kg of ferric nitrate were decomposed in a furnace maintained at 800°C for 2 hr. The actual temperature of the decomposition was not measured. The product was crushed and sieved, and the -100 mesh portion was used. Sample N. About 50 g of ferric nitrate (guaranteed reagent) were decomposed in a beaker in a sand bath until a red-brown dense solid was produced. This product was crushed and sieved, and subjected to complete decomposition at 500°C. The precalcined product was again sieved and used. Sample N2.5. Since the decomposition temperature was not controlled for sample AT, a different sample was prepared in a temperature-controlled furnace. The subscript represents the decomposition at 250°C. The product was treated in the same manner as sample N. Sample Nc. Under atmospheric pressure it is prac-tically inevitable that ferric nitrate hydrate melts to form a brown liquid at about 50°C before pyrolysis. For this reason, the salt was first slowly heated under reduced pressure (about 10-3 mm Hg measured in a trap refrigerated by dry ice-alcohol) to achieve dehydration without melting. About 5 hr were required for the dehydration and the partial decomposition. Then the temperature was elevated to 500° C in air for complete decomposition. The relatively porous product was sieved and used. Sample Ov. About 200 g of ferric oxalate hydrate (extra pure) were dehydrated under reduced pressure (as described above) followed by thermal decomposition at 500°C for 6 hr in air. The decomposition of this salt was accompanied by liberation of carbon monoxide, by which the ferric salt was initially reduced to a black powder. The powder changed in turn into brown ferric oxide as the gas liberation decreased and reoxidation predominated. The product consisted of sparkling fine particles passing through a 100-mesh screen. However it was ground and sieved as for the other samples. Sample D. Commercial fine powder for magnetic tape purposes. The preparation was as follows.5 Ferric chloride vapor and preheated excess air were mixed and passed into a reaction tube where oxidation took place at 450°C. The fine powder formed was collected in a cottrell chamber. The product was vacuum-degassed at 450°C for 1 hr and sieved.

Protective coatings based on the formation of a surface coating of nickel aluminide (NiAl) were applied to the nickel-base superalloys IN 100, SEL 15, and U-700. Coated specimens were exposed to an oxidizing environment at temperatures between 1600 and 2200 F for times up to 1000 hr. The oxidation resistance and stability of the coating were evaluated by weight gain measurements, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction study of surface oxides and coating. The composition of the coating and diffusion zone was determined by electron microprobe traverse of samples before and after high-temperature exposure. Intermediate phases formed in the coating and diffusion zone were identified by X-ray diffraction in situ and after electrolytic extraction. The outer coating was found to consist of the inter-metallic compound, NiAl, while the diffusion zone contained MC, M23C6 or M6C carbides, and a phase in a matrix of NiAl + Nidl. Oxidation resulted in formation of an A1203 n&apos;ch scale containing some Tz02. Depletion of aluminum during oxidation resulted in degradation of the outer coating to Ni3Al and the nickel alloy matrix. Diffusion of aluminum into the base metal was found to be slight and did not influence coating life significantly. The o formed in the diffusion zone during coating decomposed during elevated-temperature exposure to form stable carbide phases characteristic of the base metal. Diffusion zone phase changes were found to have no effect on the life of the aluminide coating in the oxidizing envzron?nent. THE oxidation resistance of many high-strength nickel-base superalloys is inadequate for extended exposure at temperatures above about 1600°F. In addition, some applications for these materials require that they be exposed to environments containing sulfur compounds and sodium salts which can cause surface attalk known as sulfidation or hot corrosion. In order to provide the necessary corrosion resistance to the high-strength alloys, protective coatings based on an aluminizing process have been developed. These processes, usually based on a pack cementation technique, result in the formation of a NiAl-rich outer coating layer either during the coating process or by a subsequent diffusion treatment. The performance of the aluminide coatings is affected by interactions between the coating layer and the base metal both during the coating process and during subsequent exposure at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these interactions is required to guide the development of coatings capable of longer life and improved reliability. Goward et al.&apos; recently reported the metallurgical factors which influence coating per- formance on MAR-M200. The present work is concerned with correlating the interactions and performance of coating compositions on several representative materials. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Three cast nickel-base superalloys which are used for turbine buckets in air-breathing engines were studied: IN 100, U-700, and SEL 15. Their chemical compositions are given in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-induction-melted and cast to slabs approximately 0.3 in. thick from which rectangular specimens 0.25 by 0.5 by 1 in. were machined. Coating Procedures. The machined specimens were coated by CODEP processes which were developed at the author&apos;s laboratory. These are based on pack cementation in various media to deposit either aluminum or aluminum in combination with titanium. The coating process which deposits only aluminum is designated CODEP-C, while the CODEP-D process deposits titanium in combination with aluminum. The CODEP-D process was applied only to IN 100. Both CODEP processes are applied at 1950" or 2000°F for 4 hr without need for a subsequent diffusion treatment. An outer coating about 1 mil in thickness is produced by these processes. Test Procedures. Coated specimens were exposed to static oxidation for periods ranging from 24 to 1000 hr at temperatures of 1600" to 2200°F. Terminal weight gain measurements and visual examination were used to evaluate oxidation resistance. including oxide spalling and coating failure. Both as-coated and exposed specimens of each alloy were studied by metallographic examination, electron microprobe analysis (EMA), and X-ray diffraction analysis either of the exposed surfaces or of phases extracted from the coating and diffusion zone. RESULTS As-Coated Condition. The microstructures of as-coated conditions were generally similar, irrespective of base materials or the particular coating process. They are typified by IN 100 coated by CODEP-D as shown in Fig. 1. The predominately single-phase outer layer, area A, Fig. 1, was identified by X-ray diffraction as the intermetallic compound NiA1. The NiAl zone extended inward to the original base metal interface. The diffusion zone, area B, Fig. 1, included carbide phases, a lamellar phase oriented perpendicular to the base metal surface, and a matrix phase consisting of a mixture of NiAl and Ni3Al. The phases in the diffusion zone were electrolytically extracted using a 10 pct HCl in methanol solution at approximately 1.3 amp per sq cm. The extracted phases were found to be M6C, MC, or M=C6 carbides and o as shown in Table I1 for each of the alloys. The d spacings from a typical diffraction pattern are

TEE purpose of this paper-is to describe a new process for the refining of secondary copper-base metals and a specially designed high-temperature electric-resistor furnace used in the process for the distillation of zinc from these metals. The process was used for the conversion of nickel silver to cupronickel and to recover the zinc content in metallic form. It also proved applicable and economical for the treatment of scrap brass for separating and reclaiming the copper and zinc. The relatively large furnace developed for the distillation of zinc is described in detail, for it made economically possible the direct recovery of metallic zinc from scrap brass, which is a new step in the processing of such material. Considerable interest has been shown in the utilization of the distillation furnace for other metallurgical processes, where it is of advantage to operate in a controlled neutral or reducing atmosphere, or to avoid having the processed metal in contact with refractories other than carbon, or to operate at temperatures between 3000 and 4000°F. PURPOSE OF DEVELOPMENT It was recognized early in the war effort that nickel would become a critical metal, therefore all nickel stock and alloys containing relatively high percentages of nickel were frozen immediately. Among these alloys were considerable quantities of various grades of nickel silver, an alloy containing copper, nickel, zinc, and in some grades lead, also minor amounts of iron, manganese and other constituents. At the time there was no existing plant or process to eliminate the zinc, lead, and minor constituents so as to convert this metal to cupronickel, one of the important alloys needed by the U. S. Navy for condenser parts. Therefore the Bureau of Industrial Conservation of the War Production Board requested the executives of the leading nonferrous metal companies to have their metallurgical staffs study the problem of converting this metal to cupronickel conforming to U. S. Navy Specification 44T40. The composition specified therein is as follows: nickel, 29 to 32 per cent; zinc, 1.00; iron, 0.00 to 0.60; lead, 0.05; tin, 1.20; manganese, 0.00 to 1.00; total of other elements (maximum), 0.50; copper, remainder. The problem in converting these alloys to cupronickel was the elimination of zinc, lead, iron, manganese, and other elements without appreciable loss of nickel to slags or other by-products. Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, through its Research and Development Department, undertook to solve this problem. A Government-owned plant was built at Rome, N. Y., and there the con- version was successfully made.

THE Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company is the largest copper producer in the Philippines, and the only one that makes a concentrate valuable principally for its copper; also, it has the only productive copper mine situated at considerable distance from the sea, and is the only one in the islands operating its own smelter. The Lepanto mine is in the Municipal District of Mankayan, sub-province of Benguet, near the heart of the Mountain Province of Northern Luzon. It is 165 km. from its shipping point at San Fernando, Province of La Union, on the shore of the China Sea. Elevations at the property range from 3200 to 4500 ft. The climate is very mild; temperatures are seldom below 50° or above 80°F. Annual rainfall approaches 170 in. and is mainly confined to a rainy season lasting from May to October. The months from December to April, inclusive, are usually extremely dry. This climatic pecularity entails the problems of landslides on the roads during the rainy season and water shortage during the dry season. The Mountain Trail, an improved rocksurfaced toll road maintained by the Commonwealth Government, gives access to the property. The 105 km. over this road may be traveled in about 4 ½ hr. during the dry season. Very few sections of the road are straight for more than 100 meters, and about one third of it is a one-way road controlled by gates. All freight for the property is delivered by the Manila Railroad Company to Bauang, La Union, 45 km. west of Baguio and at sea level, where it is picked up by freight trucks and hauled via Baguio to Lepanto. Granulated matte is hauled in bulk from Lepanto in four-ton lots on freight trucks to the storage bins at San Fernando. Freight rates from Bauang to the property amount to [P]8.oo per ton, and from the property to San Fernando the rate is [P]16.00 per ton. The company pays the road toll, [P] 1.00 per truck, each way. THE CAMP The company maintains a modern camp, well separated from the mine and reduction plant. Comfortable and sanitary living quarters, water, and light, as well as free medical service are provided all employees. A hospital staffed by a doctor and two nurses takes care of all medical treatment. Considering recreational facilities of great importance, the company has provided two tennis courts, two basketball courts, and badminton courts for employees. Bowling alleys and a motion picture theater are operated by the company, the profits being expended for other recreational purposes. A moderate sized recreation hall serves for barrio dances, meetings,

A brief study of the effects of material and processing variations upon the tensile properties of steel formed from mixtures of iron and carbon was made in order to provide information regarding the properties obtainable in iron-carbon compacts as influenced by forming pressure, sintering temperature, and graphite particle size. Sintered steels formed from mixtures of iron and graphite have been studied by Stern,&apos; who investigated the effect of various percentages of graphite on compacts formed from electrolytic iron that were repressed and heat-treated after sintering. A further study, by Stern and Greenberg,l is concerned with the heat-treatment of steels formed by the car-burization of iron compacts, and Margolies3 has reported work on the simultaneous sintering and carburization of iron-powder parts. Glauch4 investigated the effect of various types of graphite on the properties of iron-carbon powder alloys but did not determine the effect of different particle sizes of the same graphite alloyed with different types of powder. In the investigation reported in this paper, powders typical of those produced by electrolytic deposition and the decar-burization of shotted steel scrap were used. The powders were mixed by tumbling in a jar mill with graphite powder ground to an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and 16 microns (as determined by microscopic measurement). The properties of the iron and graphite powders are presented in tabular form as Table I. In order to obtain the maximum information from a minimum number of test specimens, the study was divided into two sections with one set of specimens treated identically in each section as a basis for comparison. A brief study of the effects of material and processing variations upon the tensile properties of steel formed from mixtures of iron and carbon was made in order to provide information regarding the properties obtainable in iron-carbon compacts as influenced by forming pressure, sintering temperature, and graphite particle size. Sintered steels formed from mixtures of iron and graphite have been studied by Stern,&apos; who investigated the effect of various percentages of graphite on compacts formed from electrolytic iron that were repressed and heat-treated after sintering. A further study, by Stern and Greenberg,l is concerned with the heat-treatment of steels formed by the car-burization of iron compacts, and Margolies3 has reported work on the simultaneous sintering and carburization of iron-powder parts. Glauch4 investigated the effect of various types of graphite on the properties of iron-carbon powder alloys but did not determine the effect of different particle sizes of the same graphite alloyed with different types of powder. In the investigation reported in this paper, powders typical of those produced by electrolytic deposition and the decar-burization of shotted steel scrap were used. The powders were mixed by tumbling in a jar mill with graphite powder ground to an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and 16 microns (as determined by microscopic measurement). The properties of the iron and graphite powders are presented in tabular form as Table I. In order to obtain the maximum information from a minimum number of test specimens, the study was divided into two sections with one set of specimens treated identically in each section as a basis for comparison. Fullerton In coal preparation plants, as in any industrial operation where raw materials are handled, nuisance problems arising from the generation of dust are inevitable. Devices for the control or collection of dust are there- fore essential components of the plant process equipment. The general term "aerosol" is applied to small particles suspended in a gaseous medium, usually air, whose velocity under the force of gravity is small enough that the particles remain suspended for a reasonable length of time. Aerosols can be classified as dust, smokes, fumes, mists or fogs. Dust includes particles originally formed by pulverization of materials by such processes as crushing, grinding, drilling, blasting and abrasion. Smoke includes particles formed from the burning of organic materials. Fumes are particles formed by processes such as condensation and sublimation, usually at high temperatures. Mists or fogs are particles formed by the condensation of water or other vapors on some nuclei. The size of aerosol particles is generally designated in units of microns, there being 1000 microns to a millimeter and 25,400 microns to an inch. Particles of about 10 microns or above are visible to the naked eye. Table 14-1 shows size characteristics of the general classifications of particles discussed above and includes typical examples of particles commonly en- countered. Table 14-1 also shows the relationship between micron size and standard screen mesh sizes. Smoke and fume are usually in the range of 0.01 to one micron, dusts are in the range of one to 400 microns, mists are in the range of 0.1 to 100 microns, and fogs are in the range of one to 100 microns. For purposes of dust control, particles greater than 10 or 20 microns in size are considered large, particles one to 10 microns are considered fine and particles below one micron are ultrafine. Sources of Dust Because coal is relatively friable, the mining and subsequent handling operations break part of the coal into dust that can be readily carried by currents of air. In a coal preparation plant mechanical handling operations such as unloading, transferring from one belt to another, screening, cleaning, and crushing in a dry state result in the generation and release of varying amounts of additional dust. The dust problem, of course, is much less serious in plants employing entirely wet processing.
