One of the properties of copper, which has done much to give it its present prominent place among the useful metals, is its electrical conductivity,—a property which has now become the chief criterion of the value of the commerical product. In pursuance of that distinctively American principle that, " the best is none too good," metal of the highest conductivity is usually called for even when such extreme purity is of no advantage ; for instance, in the making of brass and other alloys. A week-long educational program and two-day symposium on applying the fluidizing reactor to the minerals industry drew more than 100 engineers to the University of Arizona at Tucson several weeks ago. The educational program, intended for engineers who will work closely with the reactor, attracted registrants from all sections of the U. S. and Canada. Meeting at the College of Mines on February 23 for a full week of intensive classwork, the engineers ploughed in with enthusiasm. Eight hours daily of lectures and laboratory work were followed by a generous helping of homework supplied by Professor Sigmund L. Smith, who directed the course. The study program was completed on Friday and the following Monday marked the start of a symposium of technical papers covering a wide variety of operations and new ideas.

MARMORA mine is located a mile southeast of Marmora village in Hastings County, Ontario, 130 miles from Toronto and 150 miles from Ottawa. Highway No. 7 passes half a mile north of the mine and Highway No. 14 half a mile west. The Canadian National Ry. branch line between Trenton and Bancroft passes through the property just east of the open pit. The iron orebody at Marmora is the result of a replacement of Pre-Cambrian limestone with zones or bands of magnetite interlaid with metamorphic rocks and cut by later intrusives. The ore and associated Pre-Cambrian rocks are overlain by 100 to 150 ft of flat-lying paleozoic limestone. It is a low grade magnetite deposit that requires concentration before it can be used economically for production of iron and steel.

SINCE 1950, when perhaps two or three cyclones were being tested in Arizona, the number in use has grown to about 100. Most of these have come into operation within the last two or three years, and according to information supplied by various mining companies, the number will continue to grow for several years more. In mills that have been recently constructed, cyclones dominate the fine classification field, removing grit from lime slurries, producing smelter flux, reducing concentrate thickener overloads, classifying molybdenite in grinding circuits, and conditioning flotation feed. Four major copper companies are now testing cyclones in primary grinding circuits, and one concentrator soon to begin operation will classify entirely with cyclones. In at least two instances these versatile machines have been given a vital role in the construction of tailings disposal systems.

At the spring meeting of the Open Pit Division of AIME's Arizona Section, I was asked a question which indicates the acceleration of technical advancement. The question was: "How does an engineer at a properly keep abreast of what is new?" The fact that some 200 Arizona AIME members were at the meeting is a testimonial to the desire of these men to do just that- keep abreast. There is a great deal of talk in academic circles about the built-in obsolescence of an engineering or scientific education, too. About 100 commencement speakers every spring are sure to admonish the graduates that education is a continuing thing. Mining engineers are a small fraternity. We keep informed by talking to one another. Talking shop is valuable but there is no substitute for reading.

A preliminary investigation was made to determine the time required to attain equilibrium within the equilibrium cell for this system. Experimental and smoothed data are presented for the solubility of ethane in water for temperatures of 100°, 160°, 220°, 280" and 340 °F at pressures to 10.000 psia. The minimum solubility phenomenon disappears at 10,000 psia within this temperature range. In November, 1932, Dr. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, presented before the American Petroleum Institute some of the results of his research under Project 371. The investigations described dealt particularly with changes in the physical properties of petroleum that result from the solution of natural gas therein. The solubility of Santa Fe Springs dry gas, containing 87 per cent methane, 8 per cent ethane and 5 per cent propane, had been determined in various crudes at 100' F., and 2000 lb. pressure per square inch as shown in Table 1 and Fig. 1 herewith. Originally the computations were made in terms of cubic feet per barrel, but' for a more uniform basis of comparison the results are also shown as cubic feet of gas2 per cubic foot of oil.

WHEN a single crystal is annealed following plastic deformation recrystallization usually occurs rather than polygonization. Consequently, re-crystallization has received the overwhelming amount of attention albeit the intrinsic mechanisms by which dislocations rearrange and annihilate one another are just as well revealed by crystal polygonization. It is the purpose of this note to demonstrate the usefulness of studying the polygonization process by means of an etch-pit technique in sodium chloride. Sodium chloride deforms easily (the slip system is of the [110], (110) type), readily cleaves on (100) planes, and can be chemically etched so as to reveal the intersection of dislocations with a free surface. Thus it is possible to observe the distribution of dislocations after a crystal has undergone a specific deformation and annealing cycle. Various phases of the polygonization process

Laboratory experiments simulating in-situ copper recovery from primary sulfide ores in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen are reported. Copper extraction and acid consumption data are correlated with temperature in the range 50 to 150°C and quenched pH in the range 0.25 to 2. Adverse changes in the chemical composition of the leach solution and the formation of gangue-mineral alteration products and secondary sulfides can severely limit the extraction of copper above 90°C. Keeping the pH below the self-buffered value of about 2 and the temperature below about 110°C produces the maximum extraction rates. Forcing the pH too low not only results in excessively high acid consumption but may also limit the extraction of copper at temperatures above 100°C.

VAN Arkel 1 prepared ductile tantalum by the thermal decompoiition of tantalum pentachloride on a resistively heated wire (2000° C) in an evacuated bulb maintained at 100°C. Burgers and Basart2'3 observed the formation of a mixture of tantalum carbide and free metal when a carbon deposition base was used. campbel14 suggested the thermal decomposition of the iodide if a lower decomposition tem- perature was desired. To date, the details for preparing high-purity iodide tantalum have not been disclosed. EXPERIMENTAL The tantalum to be purified was symmetrically placed around the clear quartz deposition surface centrally located within a 64 mm cylindrical Vycor bulb. THE problem of the proper size and capacity of the open-hearth furnace has been a predominant issue ever since its inception some sixty years ago. The original furnaces, built in 1868 at Landore, England, were only to 3 to 4 tons capacity, and from' this there has been a steadily increasing and almost uniform rate of expansion until furnaces producing 300 tons are in successful operation today. At the end of the first half of this 60-year period, or about the year 1900, 50-ton furnaces we're common. Up to this time the problems of expansion had been largely those relating to suficient capital and the engineering development of larger units. But as 75, 100-ton and larger furnaces were proposed apprehension grew and other questions assumed leading consideration.

St. Joe Minerals Corp. opened a new $30 million mine and mill at its Balmat-Edwards division in September. It will be the largest single zinc mining operation in the United States. St. Joe expects to produce more than 200,000 tons of zinc concentrates from its combined Balmat-Edwards mines and mills in 1972, equivalent to more than 100,000 tons of zinc metal-20% of U.S. mine production. The company has operated in Northern New York since 1926, having commenced zinc mining with its Edwards mine and mill, 12 miles from Balmat. They will continue to operate at a rate of 31,000 tons of concentrate per year. St. Joe started the Balmat facility in 1930 with two mine shafts and a mill, with a capacity of 2300 tpd.

Early this year at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a survey was made of student opinion about the minerals industry. Over 100 of the three page questionnaires were completed and these were analyzed by the following categories: 40 Mining Engineering students, 20 Geological Engineering with 2 Geophysical Engineering students, 15 Geology students, 7 Metallurgical Engineering, 26 Underclassmen, 29 Graduate students and a composite of 84 total students. Not all of the results of the survey were predictable. After graduation there is a strong preference toward going to work in the mineral industries. The next most popular options, but trailing the first choice greatly, was graduate work or employment in another industry. A smattering of other choices were for teaching, government or research. None checked the box for drop out.

An error occurred in the preparation of Fig. 3, p. 249, of Basic Statistical Measures Used in Geo-chemical Investigations of Colorado Plateau Uranium Deposits. This figure shows the relation of the arithmetic mean: geometric mean ratio to the geometric deviation. Curves for the cases where n, the number of samples, is 100, 10, and 5 are too high with respect to the ordinate. The error is negligible at low geometric deviations, but becomes increasingly greater wi,th higher values of geometric deviation. Hydraulic filling was probably first used as a means of ground support in 1864 in an anthracite mine at Shenandoah, Pa. In the nearly 100 years since that time it has gained widespread acceptance, but surprisingly little study has been made of the basic features of the process. The investigations that have been made primarily concern the design of preparation processes and transportation systems, while little attention has been paid to ensuring that the fill does its job adequately after placement. Both permeability and compressibility of fills have been studied in the laboratories of the Department of Mining at The Pennsylvania State University under the sponsorship of the Mineral Conservation Section, formed to promote efficient utilization of the state's resources. Results of these studies form the basis of this article.

A methodology is presented which quantifies six coal utilization cost components, each proportional to a coal's mineral content. These are: Ash disposal costs, coal transportation costs, plant maintenance costs, reduction in plant peaking capacity, reduction in plant rated capacity, and reduction in plant availability. Numerical examples illustrate that coal containing between. 12.5% and 25.0% ash-plus-sulfur can cause incremental utilization costs ranging from less than $1.00 to more than $8.00 per ton of coal, when combusted in a pulverized coal fired power plant. Estimated costs are then compared to historical data and the conclusion drawn that steam coal beneficiation may have broader economic justification than sometimes realized. It is noted that TVA, which first proposed the methodology and parameters used here, is continuing research on this aspect of coal utilization.

DURING 1939, 286 by-product coke ovens were completed and put into operation. These included 140 Witputte ovens for the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp., at Gary, Ind.; 61 Koppers-Becker ovens for the Ford Motor Co., at River Rouge, Mich.; 65 Semet-Sotvay ovens for the Great Lakes Steel Corp., Zug Island, River Rouge, Mich.; and 20 Curran-Knowtes ovens for the Midwest-Radiant Corp. plant at Mitlstadt, Ill. The Millstadt plant is unique in carbonizing a washed coat containing 3.50 per cent sulphur. The gas contains approximately 2500 grains sulphur per 100 cu. ft.; this is successfully removed with sodium carbonate solution by the Seaboard liquid purification process. The coke is intended primarily for use as a smokeless domestic fuel in the city of St. Louis.

ONE of the most striking phenomena connected with the mines on the Comstock lode is the extreme heat encountered in the lower levels. This heat is not due to the burning of candles, heat of the men, and decomposition of timbers, all intensified by bad ventilation, as was the case nearer the surface. It proceeds from the rock, which maintains constantly a temperature very much higher than the average of the atmosphere in Nevada. The heat of these mines is a matter of more than usual interest, for they are the only hot ones now worked in the United States, and both in the present temperature encountered and in the increase which is to be expected as greater depths are reached, they appear to surpass any foreign mines of which we have a record. Hot mines are known also in other countries, as in the tin and copper lodes of Wales, where one of the veins worked by the United Mines is known as the hot lode. It has springs which discharge water at a temperature of 116° Fahrenheit, the depth being 220 fathoms, or 1320 feet. The heat of the air in these workings is given at 100° to 113° Fahrenheit. The air is bad, and the heat in the drifts seems to be traceable to defective ventilation rather than to the real necessities of the case. Air is supplied through a small pipe, and is drawn from a place where the temperature is 95° Fahrenheit. Under such circumstances it is not surprising to read that in this hot mine the air is hotter than the rock, a state of things which I have never observed in the Comstock. Other mines have been reported to the British Coal Committee as having temperatures of 106° Fahrenheit and thereabouts, but the only positive comparisons that are available at this writing are the following, all from Cornish mines * Read by permission of Lieut.
