A phase diagram is proposed for the Y-C system based on the vesults of thermal analyses, microscopic obsevvations, and X-ray diffraction studies. Three intermediate phases occur in the system: a congru-ently melting fcc phase with a wide range of homogeneity about the composition Y2C, an intermediate solid-solution region between 55 and 58 at. pct C, and a bct dicarbide melting congruently at 2415°C. All three compounds undergo a phase transformation at elezlated temperatures. A continuous serzes of solzd solutions exists between the fcc phase and the high-temperature form of YC2 with a maximum in the solidus at 2000°C and 30 at. pct C and a minimum at 1805°C and 54 at. pct C. THIS investigation of the Y-C system was undertaken as part of a nuclear materials development program. Yttrium-base alloys are of interest as possible containers for liquid metals, and carbides are currently receiving increased attention as high-temperature materials for advanced reactors and other applications. Previous work on this system was limited in scope, and the results were somewhat inconclusive and at times contradictory. Spedding et al.&apos; reported the existence of a triyttrium carbide having an fcc structure with a wide range of homogeneity and Dean et a1.2 reported the existence of a rhombohedra1 phase having the stoichiometry of Y2C. Bachella et a1.3 observed that the latter was the result of ordering of carbon atoms in the fcc solid solution. The ordering range was placed at 800" to 1000°C. Vickery et a1.4 reported a high-melting compound which they identified as yttrium dicarbide, and Spedding and coworkers1 determined the structure of this phase as bct with lattice parameters a = 3.66 and c = 6.17A. Samsonov et al.5 reported the melting point of YC2 as 2300" * 50°C. Recently Bowman et a1.6 found a transformation in the dicarbide from the tetragonal to an fcc form at 1320 20°C. Samsonov and coworkers7 reported a monocarbide of yttrium melting at 1950" * 20°C and also a sesqui-carbide melting at 1800" * 50°C. The existence of the latter has also been indicated by others,1&apos;8 but neither compound has been definitely established. The Y-C phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 was proposed by Chubb and Keller8 in 1964 based on the data available at that time. The tentative nature of this diagram together with the uncertain status of the compounds indicated that additional work on this system was needed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Yttrium metal of 99.9 pct purity was prepared for use in this study by the reduction of YCl, with calcium to form a sponge product.9 The major impurities in this material were as follows: 100 ppm C, 150 pprn H, 20 ppm N, 300 to 1000 ppm O, <20 ppm Ca, <100 ppm Cr, <80 ppm Cu, 150 ppm Fe, <30 pprn Mg, <400 ppm Ta, and <100 ppm Ti. Alloys were prepared by arc melting yttrium sponge together with pieces of high-purity graphite rod in a purified argon atmosphere. Homogeneity was insured by repeated melting, inverting the ingot between melts.

Quenched structures were studied in alloys containing up to 12.5 pct cobalt. The subsequent decomposition of a 10 pct cobalt retained-ß phase alloy was investigated using metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods. Hardness measurements also were made during the decomposition process. Precipitation of Ti2Co is by nucleation and growth; and an activation energy of 50,000 cal per mole was determined. The values of the coefficient ß suggest that the precipitate is pearlitic at temperatures between 450 and 475°C, and spheroidal between 500 and 525°C. THIS paper describes part of a series of invesligations into phase transformations in binary alloys of titanium with transition elements. The general approach is similar to that taken in work on titanium-iron and titanium-nickel alloys.&apos; Previous investigators&apos;&apos; have established the titanium-rich end of the titanium-cobalt phase diagram, reproduced in Fig. 1. Orrell and Fontana&apos; showed that alloys containing more than about 6 pct" cobalt quenched from the ß range, produced 100 pcl retained-p phase. The isothermal decomposition of alloys containing between 0.8 pct Co and 15.5 pct CO was investigated by the same workers in the temperature range 650 to 1000°C. They reported that these alloys transformed into a or Ti,Co depending on the cobalt content, but no quantitative data were given. In the work to be described a series of alloys containing 0.8 pct Co to 12.5 pct Co was examined in the quenched condition. The 10 pct Co alloy (the lowest cobalt content to retain 100 pct ß on quenching) was selected for further work on the tempering kinetics of the ß decomposition. Experimental Procedure Since our own melting equipment was not installed at the outset of this work, the Physical Metallurgy Division of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys (Ottawa, Canada) prepared the alloys. These were made of Japanese sponge, (which when melted had a value of 103 DPH, using a 1-kg load), and electrolytically prepared cobalt. The al- loys, made up to contain 0.8, 1.6, 3.3, 5.8, 8.3, 10.0 and 12.5 pct Co, were homogenized by swaging into rods at 900°C. Filings were taken from the rods, and any iron chips from the file were separated magnetically. Size fractions of both plus and minus 200 mesh (about 75p) were shown by their constitution, after annealing just below the eutectoid temperature, to contain the same cobalt content. Consequently, it was permissible to use the —200-mesh fraction, knowing it to be representative of the rod composition. Quenching in argon was carried out in a newly designed furnace, whose features include (1) an Inconel furnace tube, (2) a positive pressure of argon maintained at all times in the furnace—even when a sample is removed or inserted. The furnace is shown in Fig. 2 and is described in the Appendix. The tempering processes were carried out on powder samples sealed in evacuated quartz capsules. Since the highest tempering temperature was 525OC, no protection against reaction with the quartz was necessary. An automatic surface-follower mechanism was used to measure the surface temperature and the rate of evaporation of molten zinc while undergoing distillation at low pressure. At pressures of 50 to 100 microns Hg, the rate of evaporation may be 60 to 80 pct of the theoretical maximum corresponding to the measured temperature. The rate decreases rapidly at pressures above 100 microns Hg, to only 7 pct of the theoretical maximum at 2000 microns Hg. Measured temperature gradients at the surface are in agreement with theoretical gradients calculated from the heat of vaporization, rate of evaporation, and thermal conductivity of molten zinc. THIS paper covers a series of careful measurements of the rate of evaporation of molten zinc at low pressures, undertaken as a part of a general investigation on the separation of metals by distillation.&apos; Preliminary results on the rate of evaporation of zinc were described in a previous publication.&apos; The results of the preliminary study are as follows: 1—The observed rates of evaporation of zinc were as high as 0.60 g per sq cm per min, corresponding to 75 pct of the maximum rate as determined by the temperature of the metal. 2—The evaporation rate was decreased from 0.30 g per sq cm per min at a pressure of 25 microns to only 0.09 g per sq cm per min when the pressure was increased to 5 mm. 3—The temperature of the surface during rapid evaporation may be 35" to 100°C less than the main mass of metal. Observed temperature gradients at the surface are consistent with those calculated from the heat of vaporization and the thermal conductivity of liquid zinc. In the preliminary experiments, the rate of evaporation was determined from the loss in weight of the metal in the crucible during the test. This was compared with the weight of the condensate. Obviously, this method was subject to error because of some uncertainty as to the period of evaporation that should correspond to the loss in weight. Furthermore, this method did not permit taking into account probable variations in the rate of evaporation during the test. A more serious shortcoming was that the temperature at the evaporating surface was not known, so the maximum theoretical rate of evaporation could not be calculated accurately. To improve the precision of rate measurements and to allow accurate measurements of the surface temperature, a refined experimental technique was developed whereby the temperature and position of the surface could be measured accurately. This was done by an automatic surface-follower mechanism that gave a continuous record of the surface temperature and the amount of zinc evaporated. These data permitted an instantaneous determination of the actual rate of evaporation and the surface temperature throughout the test. Pure zinc (99.99 pct Zn) was used in all experiments. Description of Distillation Furnace The details of construction of the distillation furnace are shown in Fig. l. The furnace is enclosed in a large quartz tube open at one end. The open end of the quartz tube is sealed by means of a water-cooled head. The entire enclosure is vacuum tight. The connection between the water-cooled head and the quartz tube is sealed by means of a rubber gasket which fits tightly against the smooth end of the tube. The metal is heated by induced current set up in the molten zinc and the walls of the graphite crucible by means of a water-cooled induction coil outside the quartz tube. Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of greensand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8% ), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of, slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace-element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. The magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction of single crystals of alloys between 25 and 59 wt pct Co in Fe have been determined in the disordered and ordered states. The magrzetostriction is large and positive for all alloys in both states of order (up to 150 x 10-6 for A,, and 40 x 10-6 for 111). The magnetic anisotropy becomes zero rzear 41 pct Co for the disordered state. Ordering shifts the zero-anisotropy composition to about 50 pct Co. COBALT-iron alloys have for many years been of interest as magnetic materials because they have unusually high magnetic saturation values.&apos; This interest was increased recently by the development of Supermendur.&apos; Supermendur is an alloy of 49 pct Co-49 pct Fe-2 pct V* which was found by suitable purification and heat treatments, including a magnetic anneal, to possess excellent magnetic properties. These included a square hysteresis loop with a low coercive force and a high magnetization, and a low total loss. Two factors which are important in determining the magnetic hysteresis properties are the basic magnetic properties of magnetostriction and anisotropy. Alloys having zero anisotropy and zero magnetostriction show improved hysteresis properties.3 Since very meager data4-&apos; are available in the literature on the single-crystal anisotropy and magnetostriction of the cobalt-iron alloys, the present program was undertaken to determine these two properties in the disordered and ordered states. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Ingots of the cobalt-iron alloys containing from 25 pct to 59 pct Co in iron were vacuum melted from electrolytic iron and cobalt of 99.9 pct purity. The ingots were cooled at a rate of about 1°C per hr through the transformation temperature (950" to 980°C dependent on the alloy content) for the growth of large grains. From these grains, single-crystal disks were fabricated with either the (110) or (100) plane parallel to the faces of the disk. The crystals were given two heat treatments to produce either the ordered state (cooling rate of 20°C per hr from 850 "C) or the disordered state (water quench from 850 °C). Since the iron-cobalt alloys order very rapidly, the water quench may not have produced complete disorder in all cases. Due to the method of growth, the crystals were not perfect. Most of the samples had low-angle boundaries and a few had some small included grains. These imperfections could and probably did affect the accuracy of both the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction measurements. Much of the scatter in the data may be attributed to the crystal imperfections. The methods of determining the spontaneous saturation magnetostriction and the anisotropy have been previously described.419110 MAGNETOSTRICTION The magnetostriction in the [loo] and [Ill] directions (hO0 and ?111 respectively) is illustrated in Fig. 1 for the disordered state. Both ?100 and ?111i became large positive values as cobalt was added to iron. The state of order did not have a large effect on the magnetostriction. The effect of order did not appear too consistent in these data. Tentative curves are shown in Fig. 1 for the ordered magnetostriction near the FeCo composition; here ?100 appeared to be lowered and ?111 raised as the degree of order was increased. INTRODUCTION One cannot discuss the subject of "Raising Capital in the 1990s" without having a crystal ball and a reliable fortune teller. This discusses "Raising Capital for the 1990sW, which is what Metal1 Mining Corporation did in 1987. We raised (3166 million in an IPO (initial public offering) that was originally planned for only some (375 million. Why did we raise this money? How did we do it, and why was this IPO so successful? The answer to the first question requires a description of the promoter and principal shareholder of Metal1 Mining Corporation, Metallgesellschaft AG. This West Germany company was founded over 100 years ago in Frankfurt as a trading house for non-ferrous metals. It has developed into one of the world&apos;s leading firms in the non-ferrous metals industry. The company&apos;s worldwide activities in all areas of that business include mining, smelting and refining, the trading of ore, base and precious metals, the production of semi-fabricated and finished metal products, and the provision of engineering, construction and transportation services. Metallgesellschaft AG has also diversified into many other areas, the most significant of which are manufacturing, the production of chemicals, the development and application of technical and chemical processes, the planning and construction of industrial plants, and activities associated with finance, insurance, shipping and freight forwarding, and the provision of barter and countertrade services. The company maintains a network of more than 100 offices around the world; it employs some 25,000 people in its worldwide activities. METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG Figure 1 depicts an overview of Metallgesellschaft AG before and at the time the initial public offering of Metall Mining Corporation&apos;s shares took place. It shows that mining was far from the centre of Metallgesellschaft&apos;s activities. Therefore, it could not expect to receive an extraordinary amount of board attention. Thus, mining investments not only had to compare well with other mining opportunities, but were in fierce competition with projects from other divisions. In addition, mining was sub-divided into two separate departments -- domestic and international. These two departments had different management styles and diverging interests which resulted in a minimum co-operation between them. The domestic mining department was primarily interested in the survival of the local mines. These mines were characterized by rising operating costs and declining ore grades. It took a special commitment and continued ingenuity to develop and adjust to local conditions, and modern mining and processing technology, in order to remain competitive, or at least survive within the international mining industry. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (58 Stat., 190; 30 U.S.C. Sup., Secs. 321-325) was approved by Congress April 5, 1944; it directed the Bureau of Mines to build demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and agricultural products. The most important oil-shale deposits in the United States are in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shale of western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, more persistent, and apparently richer than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. It occurs at the top of a high plateau surrounded by bold, nearly vertical escarpments 500 to 600 ft in height. The top 400 to 500 ft of these escarpments comprises an oil-shale measure that averages 15 gal of shale oil per ton; the bottom 70 90 100 ft of the measure, called the Mahogany Ledge, averages over 30 gal per ton. The full measure in a 1000-square-mile area is estimated to contain 300 billion barrels of shale oil;&apos; the Mahogany Ledge is estimated to contain 100 billion barrels of oil. These estimates are based on numerous surfac,e samples and on core-drill holes drilled by the Government and by private enterprise. The oil-shale beds are undisturbed and lie nearly horizontal. The name "oil shale" is unfortunate, as the rock is a tough, strong marlstone. Organic matter named "kerogen" is a constituent of the rock. The oil-shale demonstration mine is on Naval Oil-Shale Reserve No. 1; it is about 5 1/2miles by mountain road from the plant site, which, in turn, is 2 miles from U.S. Highway 6 and 10 miles west from Rifle, Colo. The highway parallels the Colorado River, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, and a 66,000-volt public-utility power line. Early in the program it was realized that an oil-shale enterprise would have to be on a large scale to be commercial, and that unusually low mining costs would be necessary. The physical characteristics of the Mahogany Ledge and an overlying roof stone are unusually favorable both for large-scale operation and low mining costs. Quarry practices largely will be followed underground to mine the Mahogany Ledge. The aim has been toward complete mechanization of all mining operations. A mining unit would comprise a square mile containing 100,000,000 tons of oil shale with allowance for mining losses. An investment of $1,000,000 would be $0.01 a ton; such an expenditure, therefore, could be made to save, say, $0.015 per ton daily operating cost. A goal of a mining cost of $0.50 per ton was set up in 1945. Open-cut mining costs then were about $0.25 per ton of material handled; it was hoped that a cost double this amount could be obtained in mining the Mahogany Ledge. Costs of labor and supplies have increased since 1945 and so has the selling price of petroleum products. To those unacquainted with the character of the Green River deposits, the name "shale" suggested high mining costs. Others assumed that coalmining costs of $2 to $5 per ton would apply. To many, the expected mining costs appeared the principal handicap to the establishment of an oil-shale industry. The purpose of the Bureau of Mines is to demonstrate methods and to establish costs for mining the oil shale on a large scale. It is hoped this work will lead to the establishment of a large-scale, commercial oil-shale enterprise.

The general energy equation, including change in kinetic energy, was solved by numerical integration and used to evaluate simplifying assumptions and application practices over a wide range of conditions. When extreme conditions were encountered, sizable errors were caused by large integration intervals, application of Simpson&apos;s rule and neglecting change in kinetic energy. A maximum error of only 1.31 percent was caused by assuming temperature and compressibility constants at their average value. It was discovered that a discontinuity can develop in the integral for the injection case. This discontinuity indicates a point of zero pressure change and is an inflection point in the pressure traverse. INTRODUCTION When a pressure in a gas well is to be calculated, one of the first decisions is to select a method of calculation. In many instances, this selection becomes a problem because the literature, at best, provides an evaluation of any method for only a limited range of conditions. Once a method has been selected, a question often arises as to the size of the calculation interval which should be used. The question regarding calculation interval arises because an analytic solution is not obtainable and approximate solutions must be used. This paper presents an evaluation of major assumptions and application practices of probably the two most widely used methods for calculating steady-state single-phase gas well pressures. The two methods are Cullender and Smith1-" (numerical integration), and average temperature and com-pressibility. The Cullender-Smith method assumes that change in kinetic energy is negligible and is normally applied in two steps with a Simpson&apos;s rule correcton. The average temperature and compressibility method, in addition to neglecting kinetic energy change, asumes that temperature and compressibility are constant at their average values. This method is normally applied for wellhead shut-in pressures of less than 2,000 psi, and in one step. Computer programs were written to compute bottom-hole pressure with and without the assumptions, using various approaches. Values of input parameters investigated are shown in Table 1. Flow rate was limited to a maximum of 5,000 and 10,000 Mcf/D for tubing sizes of 1.610 and 1.995 in. ID, respectively. Flow rate was also limited to 10,000 Mcf/D for a tubing size of 2.441 in. ID when wellhead flowing pressure was 100 psia. These limitations were imposed on flow rate so as not to exceed sonic velocity. The z factor routine available necessitated limiting bottom-hole temperature to 240F and wellhead pressure to 3,000 psia. Pressures were compared on the basis of percent deviation from the trapezoidal integration of Eq. l or 2 at 100-ft intervals. A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1,000-ft interval solution would differ from a 50-ft interval solution by less than 0.25 percent; therefore, the 100-ft interval was chosen for a base. I&apos;m sure many of you have wondered what the term "Cross Flow Filtration" means. I shall explain it so that you more clearly understand it, and I hope you will be able to make it a useful tool for you in the future. In the simplest form of cross flow filtration contaminated fluid. or feed stream, is fed at a high velocity down the center of a porous tube, clear fluid weeps through the porous wall of the tube while the suspended solids concentrate in and are swept away by the feed stream. (See figure A). The high velocity flow of the feed stream tends to keep the inside of the tube free from a build up of contamination. By utilizing this cross flow approach to filtration, we have been able to concentrate such things as paint pigments, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, precipitated metals such as uranium yellowcake or silver, cadmium, some metal hydroxides, as well as gelatinous particles such as yeast cells. You will recognize that cross flow filtration lends itself to a recirculation loop system due to the necessity of maintaining a high velocity on the inside of the tube. This means that we generally have a storage tank from which we are recirculating, and the solids will concentrate in the storage tank. (See figure B). The storage tank design becomes an integral part of the total system and is very important to the total function of the system. The cross flow filter system requires only low pressure, and will work with centrifugal pumps, diaphram pumps or in some cases no pump at all. As an example, if we wanted to filter a 10 GPM (37.8 liters/min.) stream that contained 1% of submicronic particulate, we would flow the 10 GPM (37.8 liters/min.) into the storage tank and recirculate through the filter at a flow of anywhere from 30 GPM to 100 GPM (113.6 to 378.5 liters/min.) depending upon the filterability of the particles from the liquid. As the contaminated fluid recirculates, the solids will build up in the storage tank and loop until they reach a level, which is dependent upon the design of the tank. Then the settling rate in the tank becomes equal to the amount of the solids being fed to the tank, and as a result you reach an equilibrium in the amount of solids being presented to the inside of the porous tubing. We have in effect created a dynamic settling tank or thickener. A flow of 10 GPM (37.8 liters/min.) of clear filtrate comes off for either recycle or disposal with periodic removal of thick mud from the bottom of the tank. The thick mud can be either processed through a centrifuge, a rotary drum filter. a flat bed pressure type filter, or other means. Often the small volume of filtrate from the mud de-watering stream can be recycled back into the recirculation tank so that any fines in the feedback are again concentrated, thus closing the loop on the continuous process 100% removal system. Cross flow filtration will not do efficient molecular separation. We work primarily with discrete solids but we do separate them totally from the liquid carrier fluid. I know some of you will raise your eyebrows when I say that we remove 100% of the particulate, but in measurement tests, we have measured the filtrate cleanliness with instruments that record as low as .05 ppm and the instruments read zero, so that it is less than .05 ppm.

Most previous work on sedimentation of coal 1 and mineral 2-3 suspensions has been conducted in graduated 1-liter glass cylinders of 6-cm diam. With this type of large container it is often difficult to see through the suspension and tedious to perform a large number of tests. Furthermore, the heavy glass walls and the graduation lines of glass cylinders cause internal and stray reflections, respectively. To obviate these difficulties, an Atlab Emulsion Viewer from Arthur H. Thomas Co. was adopted as an alternative apparatus. Equipment: The viewer," shown in Fig. 1, consists of: 1) a stainless steel frame rack holding 21 flat-bottom Nessler tubes or an ungraduated replica 1.64 cm ID and 1.80 cm OD, 2) a movable masked 150-w lumaline lamp behind the tubes, and 3) a scaled glass panel with 100 vertical divisions in front of the tubes. The tubes are snugly held by springs in slots formed by spacer bars, which also serve as shields to eliminate stray light. The lumaline lamp is mounted behind a slit in a movable housing so that it can be positioned behind the suspension to be examined. The lowest or 100-divi-sion line on the front glass plate is leveled with the upper side of the bottom of all tubes. The scaled portion of each tube, roughly 19 cm high and 40 ml in volume, is used to study coal and mineral suspensions. Procedure: The following procedure was used in many tests. A 1.6-gm sample of dry coal was mixed with 16 ml of distilled water in an ordinary test tube and allowed to stand for three days, with occasional shaking to insure thorough wetting of all particles. The slurry was transferred to a Nessler tube and diluted to 32 ml. The pH regulator and flocculating reagent were added, and the slurry was diluted to reach the uppermost or zero-division line. The tube was immediately stoppered and inverted downward and up again ten times during a period of 35 to 40 sec. The lumaline lamp was turned on during the inversion period. After inversion the tube was quickly returned to the viewer rack. The time elapsed for each 10-division drop of the demarcation line between solid and liquid was recorded by stopwatch until the 80-division line was reached in the zone of compression. Additional readings were taken at 15, 30, and 60 min after settling began. The clarity of the supernatent liquid was observed also. As the settling rate became considerably slower at the 75-division line, it was convenient at this time to start the next test in a separate Nessler tube. This was continued until the suspensions in any number of the 21 tubes were tested. An attempt was made to correlate the experimental results between the Nessler tube and a 1-liter glass cylinder. Table I shows that coal particles settle much faster in the cylinder than in the tube, which has a large wall effect.&apos; The correction factor for the tube impedance is 1.662 2 0.145 at the 40-division line in the hindered settling zone, and 1.614 & 0.139 at the 75-division line in the compression zone. This rough correlation was established by dividing the pulp height of each container into 100 divisions and comparing the settling rates of the two containers at the same divisions. Tests were also performed to determine the accuracy of the viewer. The results, not presented, showed that error was within 10 pct.

In the selective flocculation of iron ores, the concentration of alkaline earth ions in pulp solutions plays a critical role. Sodium silicate, alone or with sodium tripolyphosphate, has been used as a dispersant. When Ca+ + concentration exceeds 15 to 20 ppm, however, only a strong complexing agent, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was found to be effective (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). Some iron ores release Ca+ + in excess of 20 ppm. With ores that contain gypsum, the Ca+ + concentration may reach several hundred ppm. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of EDTA with nitrilotriacetate (NTA) in countering the adverse effects of Ca+ +, particularly at high Ca+ + concentrations. Emphasis was placed on the use of NTA since it is more cost-effective than EDTA. It is also used in detergents in some countries (Malaiyandi, Williams, and O&apos;Grady, 1979). NTA, like EDTA, forms a soluble complex with Ca+ + with a 1:1 molar ratio. Its structure and the value of log Kca are given below together with EDTA (Shibata, 1963). [ ] For experimental materials, an equal weight mixture of Lac Jeannine hematite and a high-purity quartzite from Thompson, MN, both ground to - 30 µm (- 560 mesh) was used. Selective flocculation test conditions and procedures were identical to those used in previous investigations (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). The optimum level of starch addition for the above mixture was determined to be at 300 g/t (0.6 lb per st). Initially, a series of selective flocculation tests were performed on the mixture pulped with 10-3M CaC12 (40 ppm Ca + +) at pH 11. With no NTA present, flocculation of the entire suspension resulted. The selectivities achieved in tests with 90, 100, and 150% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA were virtually identical to each other and also to the selectivity of separation obtained in the absence of Ca+ + Such an observation could have been expected since Ca+ + concentrations up to a few ppm may be tolerated in selective flocculation (Krishnan and Iwasaki, 1982). A similar series of tests were performed at 10-2M CaC12 (400 ppm Ca+ +). The results are shown in Fig. 1 as grade¬recovery curves. For comparison, the results obtained in the absence of Ca++ are included. At 90% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA, a large enough concentration of uncomplexed Ca+ + was left in solution to cause indiscriminate flocculation. Note in this figure that NTA is capable of countering the adverse effect of Ca+ + even at this high concentration when it is used in excess of stoichiometric amounts. The free Ca+ + concentrations at 100 and 150% are calculated to be 2.5 and 0 ppm, respectively. [ ] The relative effectiveness of NTA and EDTA was then compared at 100% of the stoichiometric amount using 10-2M and 10-3M CaCI2 (Fig. 2). EDTA appears to be slightly more effective than NTA. The free Ca++ of 0.02 ppm in 10-2M CaC12 with EDTA compared to 2.5 ppm free Ca+ + with NTA might account for the difference. As evident, prohibitively high additions of EDTA and NTA were required to complex high concentrations of calcium ion. The use of both of these agents would result in the accumulation of complexed Ca+ + in recycle water.

We have obtained by computer methods the solutions of the Taylor analysis1 for axisymmetric flow in bcc metals. Four modes of slip have been treated in detail:2-4 (111), {112}(111), {123}( 111), and a mixture of all three. In addition to obtaining anisotropy of strength data for randomly oriented or textured polycrystalline material,4 we have also obtained the lattice rotation resulting from slip on the predicted systems. The patterns of lattice rotation are essential to an improved understanding of texture development during deformation. The present note shows the results of lattice rotation for 5 pct axisymmetric compression, for fifty-two axial orientations distributed at 5-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The data are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 for the four modes of slip. The lattice rotation is indicated by a vector, the ends of which correspond to the positions before and after the deformation. The different vectors emanated from a given orientation represent different combinations of five slip systems that satisfy Taylor&apos;s minimum shear criterion.&apos; Fig. 1 shows the results for {110}< 111> slip. They are similar to those obtained by Bishop5 for the case of (111 )(110) slip in axisymrnetric tension, since in axisymmetric flow the sense of lattice rotation for {111)( 110) in tension is the same as that for (110) (111) in compression. The pattern of lattice rotation may be divided into three regions: region A in which the rotation is toward [100]; region B, toward [lll]; and region C, toward either [ loo] or L lll]. Although some slip combinations in region C lead to [1101, the latter is not stable as continued activity of the same combinations will eventually move the axis toward [loo] or Llll]. It may also be noted that [loo] is itself not stable. However, close inspection of the vectors in region A shows that it is impossible for an axial orientation within A to rotate outside its boundary. Hence after heavy compression, all orientations from A and some from C are expected to form a diffuse band in the [100] vicinity. By far the largest region is B. Here all orientations rotate to [lll], which is a truly stable position. Thus the [111] texture component is expected to be rather sharp. For the case of (112 }( 111) slip, Fig. 2, region C is enlarged at the expense of A, with B about the same as for {110}( 111) slip. A significant difference, however, is that [loo], as well as [Ill], is now truly stable. Fig. 3 shows the results of slip on {123}( 111) systems. Region B is substantially enlarged at the expense of C, with A being intermediate in size between the {110}(111) and {112}(111) cases. Like the case of {110)( 111) slip, [100] is itself unstable. However, the lattice rotations here are confined to less than 5 deg; hence it may be considered "stable" for practical purposes. Finally, Fig. 4 shows the results of mixed slip. Here region B is the largest, and C the smallest, of all the cases considered. Both [loo] and [ill] are stable. The behavior of the three corner positions is, in fact, identical to the case of {112)( 111) slip, Fig. 2; it turns out that in these positions for the mixed slip case, all the active slip systems (based on Taylor&apos;s criterion) belong to pure {112}( 111) .4 In summing up the results for the four modes of

I. INTRODUCTION. In the summer of 1909 the Boston & Montana reduction department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. completed a new flue system, at a cost of about $1,100,000, and -is this includes the largest and highest chimney in the world, and some new features of flue construction, a description will be of interest. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute in September, 1909, a brief mention was made of this flue system, in discussing Mr. Brunton&apos;s presidential paper on the Progress of Metallurgy in the West, and a promise was given that when a long enough time had elapsed, so that operating results could be given, a paper would be offered. The smelting plant includes blast furnaces, MacDougall roasters, gas-fired reverberatories, and converters.

AN iron blast furnace of 1000 tons daily capacity will produce about 100,000 cu; ft. per minute of blast-furnace gas. This contains about 25 per cent of carbon monoxide, and has a B.t.u. value of about 95. This gas-is used primarily for heating the stoves of the blast furnace, and secondarily, under boilers, for steam production. Occasionally it is also used in gas engines. The raw gas coming out of the furnace carries about 10 grains of flue dust per cubic foot of gas, under best operating conditions. With the furnace "rolling" or slipping, this quantity may temporarily be greatly increased. This dust would, of course, deposit on the checkers of the stoves, or plug the burners under the boilers; therefore the gas must be cleaned.

THE nickel-chromium alloys of importance are those containing iron and those free from iron. The most important alloys containing iron, with regard to high tonnage, are the nickel-chromium steels. The three types of nickel-chromium steels developed at this time were: Type 1, containing 3.50 per -cent. nickel and 1.50 per cent. chromium; type 2, containing 2.00 per cent. nickel and 1.00 per cent. chromium; and type 3, containing 1.50 per cent. nickel and 0.50 per cent. chromium.

Operating properties of Bancroft Mines Ltd. are in the Western Province of Northern Rhodesia, just south of the Katanga border and at the north- western end of the Rhodesian Copperbelt. The concentrator, above, was commissioned in January 1957 to treat 150,000 tons per month of ore derived from the nearby Kirila Bomwe South orebody, and the Konkola orebody eight miles away. The Konkola orebody is comparatively low grade and mining was discontinued there in early 1958. Development work on the new mine at the Kirila Bomwe North orebody commenced in 1959. Today, the plant treats approximately 150,000 tons of ore per month from the Kirila Bomwe South orebody and development ore from the north orebody. Ultimately, 100,000 tons of ore per month will be produced from the north orebody.

In the earlier clays, these ores were treated by chloridizing-roasting followed by amalgamation, with satisfactory results, according to the information now available. Material from old tailing dumps from ore treated by this process, which are found at several places in the vicinity of Oruro, seldom contains more than 5 to 6 oz. of silver per ton. As ore with less than 100 oz. per ton was not treated, the extraction of silver must have been good. Reports of the operating companies published about 1890 asserted that over 90 per cent. of the silver was recovered, but in these calculations, as a rule, no allowance was made for silver lost during roasting and the figure referred only to the extraction of silvcr by amalgamation from the roasted ore.
