Population balance models were used to model the grinding action of industrial scale coal pulverizers. Experimental work was conducted with two different coal samples to determine the values of the appearance and selection function. These functions were determined for vertical mills by using s 6-inch by 10-inch laboratory roll mill to represent the action of a vertical mill. Two very important operating variables were identified for vertical mills: feed rate and roll spacing. Factorially designed experiments were used to analyze .and quantify the effect of these two variables. The models were then adapted to represent changes in operating conditions by incorporating the effect of the feed rate and roll spacing effects. This resulted in a simulation model able to respond to changes in operating conditions, by providing corrected predicted values for the product size distribution.

INTRODUCTION Most metallic minerals and some industrial minerals have a relatively high specific gravity and most have at one time or another been concentrated by gravity methods. The principles of gravity concentration are straightforward, well documented and easy to understand, but in practice there are many pitfalls that await the engineer in the development of an integrated flowsheet. Gravity concentration equipment has a long history of use and there is a great diversity available. The equipment is capable of treating material over a broad size range, only falling off in efficiency in the very fine sizes. Gravity concentration is also inexpensive, generally free of environmental problems, and commercial equipment can process large tonnages of ore with a minimum of capital cost. As might be expected of an efficient and low cost process, the bulk of the tonnage quickly and inexpensively. Another obvious application is treating mineral deposits such as hematite and manganese ores that are sufficiently liberated after a minimum of crushing to allow production of a coarse concentrate that will meet market specifications. Except for hand picking and mechanical sorting, there is no competing process on coarse size material. Conversely, it is sometimes obvious that gravity concentration does not warrant consideration. Examples are ores that require very fine grinding to attain liberation, for ores where the minerals of interest have a gravity similar to the gangue, and ores that are strongly magnetic. The experimental system for mine venti1ation control in Staszic colliery has two - level structure. In the lower - measuring 1evel the existing computer - based early fire detection system has been used completed with a number of additional sensors needed for ventilation parameters monitoring. The higher 1evel is a secondary computer equipped with a suitab1e dedicated software performing data processing according to the control a1gorithm. Direct control of air flow in a selected mine district is performed by means of a remotely controlled automatic regulator. Apart from functional tests of the system and its elements some research work has been carrying out in the colliery based on observations of transient effects caused by changes in air flow distribution.

In this US Bureau of Mines report, mine and mill cost models are presented to make estimates of the cost to develop mineral deposits in the desert region of the southwest United States. Regression analysis was used to generate capital and operating cost equations for each model based on daily production capacity. These models are used for Potential Supply Analysis (PSA) studies by the Bureau, which analyzes the economic benefits of minerals in a region.

The longterm aim of this research project is to find fast ways of simulating the recoverable reserves of a deposit for input into financial Monte Carlo simulations without having to conditionally simulate the whole orebody many times. The first step in this re- search is to visualize and quantify the ore tonnage T and the metal quantity Q above an arbitrary cutoff z. This paper presents detailed results for one specific distribution, the lognormal. These lead to a suggestion of a fast way of simulating QTz curves.

Introduction Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies under the influence of an electric field. Electrostatic separation is effected by adjusting those forces acting on particles due to the electric field as well as co-acting forces such as gravity or centrifugal forces so that the different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Electrostatic separations can be broadly defined as being either electrophoretic or dielectrophoretic. Electrophoresis is the separation of charged particles in an electric field, whereas dielectrophoresis is the separation of neutral particles in an electric field1. Examples of an electrophoretic separation can be found with sepa¬rations that use corona charging (ion bombardment), contact charging (triboelectric) and conductive induction. Dielectrophoresis motions are due to the stress and repositioning of charges, i.e. polarization of a neutral particle when exposed to a non-uniform electric field. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high-tension, electrodynamic or ion bombardment separations. These are the most prevalent in use today in mineral processing. Dielectrophoretic separation of most minerals is based on differences in dielectric constants of the solid species and usually requires the use of expensive intermediate dielectric fluids. Dielectrophoresis has not been employed for industrial mineral separations, though its effects pose interesting possibilities1, and pilot-plant units developed by the U.S.B.M. are available for testing2. Our discussion will be limited to the three forms of electrophoresis found in commercial practice. Typical Industrial Separations Typical industrial applications of electrostatic separation are: 1. Grouting has been used in underground mining for more than 20 years. Chemical grouting is often used as a remedial measure when the implemented ground-control program is unable to completely prevent structural failures or when there is a need for preventing a structural member from unraveling. The utilization of polyurethane grout is restricted by its limited range of physical and mechanical properties. To overcome some of the drawbacks of polyurethane, research is being conducted on a newly developed polyester based grout. The polyester resin, identified by Sandvik as Strata Grip, provides a number of features, including variable gel times and a much-reduced chemical hazard. Equally important are the mechanical properties of the product. The strength and deformability of any chemical grout must be compatible with the intended purpose of grouting and the expected deformation of the rock that is to be grouted The assessment of the mechanical properties of polyester grout is the focus of this work. Field experiences and laboratory research defined the properties of an effective grouting material. Experimental results indicate that the polyester grout meets or exceeds the recommended properties for many injection applications. Furthermore, the results suggest that the ability to adjust mechanical properties via resin formulation has the potential to expand the applicability of chemical grouting in ground control.

Newmont Gold operates the Carlin East underground, one of four underground gold mines the company operates in northeastern Nevada. Carlin East began full production in early 1995. The mine's current rate is 900 t/d (1,000 stpd), producing about 4.6 t/a (150,000 oz/year). About 125 hourly and salaried personnel are employed at the project for its estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently used at the Carlin East Mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased an AC-Eickhoff ET-210 roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June 1997. It is used in longhole Stope topcut development and cut-and-fill production at a rate of 225 t/d (250 stpd)

INTRODUCTION The Control Problem The need for automatic control in flotation plants stems from frequent and randomly occurring disturbances to the feed slurry. Typical disturbances occur in the solids feedrate, the slurry percent sol ids, and the mineralogy and flotability of the gangue and valuable minerals. In plants where semi -autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are used, feedrate changes are very large and changes in feed percent solids of 1m or more are common. Mineralogy changes between valuable minerals are common, as are changes in the host gangue rock. As these changes occur, the operator can attempt to compensate for them by making adjustments to the flotation cell levels, the dosage rates of the collectors and frothers, the pH, and in some cases the aeration rate of the cells. This problem is sometimes complicated by the fact that different sections of the flotation plant will be processing different ore types at the same time. Potential Savings with Control Flotation control brings about savings or plant improvements in two areas; the first is in improved metallurgy and the second is in reagent savings. Improved metallurgy includes increases in the average plant recovery and achieves target concentrate grade level s more consistently. Average recovery increases between 1.0 and 5.0 percentage points have been widely reported (Paakkinen, 1979; Sutherland, 1984). Reagent savings of up to 40 percent have also been reported (Hales, 1985). VARIABLES OF IMPORTANCE Control led, Manipulated, and Disturbance Variables The initial step in the analysis of the flotation control problem is identification of important variables which can affect the efficiency of separation. The efficiency of separation is represented by a group of controlled variables which can quantify the performance of a flotation circuit. This group includes variables such as grade, recovery, tonnage through- put, and circulating loads. The efficiency of separation of a flotation circuit may generally be defined by a grade recovery map, where each point on this map re- presents a set of operating conditions (see Figure 1). However, the combination of operating conditions must be set to operate close to the economic optimum. When using perlite as an insulation, it is important to determine the requirements for different applications as this influences the processing of the perlite. In cryogenic application, perlite properties of low density and fine particle size are desirable, while loose fill insulation applications require similar properties and water repellency. However, in perlite insulating concrete applications, a coarser particle, of higher density, is required to provide improved compression strength. The essential properties of perlite including particle size, density, and surface treatment are discussed in relation to the various insulation applications. Also, typical mineral processing and manufacturing techniques are reviewed.

The geophysical aspect of reconnaissance marks the beginning of extensive computer applications supporting development of a mine. Although there are some storage and retrieval applications in geology, and some statistical analysis in geochemistry, large-scale compilation, reduction, and interpretation of mineral resource data are initiated in reconnaissance geophysics. The reasons for this fact are quite simple. Geophysics is oriented toward quantitative evaluation of areas of interest, and methods of data collection are automated to the extent that large amounts of analog and digital information are recorded. The large volume of data must be interpreted in a reasonable time. Furthermore, some modeling problems involving complex numerical solutions could not be attempted without the computer. Therefore, the computer is essential to the success of an exploration project using geophysics. For example, aeromagnetics is a common technique for reconnaissance examination of areas associated with sulfide systems and porphyry deposits. An area covering 161 X 161 km (100 X 100 miles) may be flown with a 1.6-km (1-mile) line spacing yielding 10,000 line miles (16,093 km) of data. If only 10 measurements are recorded per mile, 100,000 data points, including location and magnetic field intensity, must be reduced and stored for quantitative interpretation. Computer applications often represent a significant investment in manpower and hardware. It is desirable, therefore, to initiate an engineering approach to the application of computers to geophysics. By this it is meant that computer programs and systems should be formulated, developed, and implemented in a disciplined manner such that their usage is dependent only on the application and not on the individual doing the programming. In other words, computer application, development, and usage should evolve beyond the personal gadget phase to an important applied technology. Geophysics has evolved over the past two decades in a course parallel to computer hardware development. During the sixties, the computer became large enough and fast enough that complex models required by geophysics could be solved. Automation also relieved the geophysicist from routine manual calculations. During the seventies, computing power in¬creased and applications expanded from two-dimensional problems to three-dimensional modeling. Moving into the eighties, as computer hardware costs will significantly decrease, the major expense of computing will be the manpower required to develop, implement, and use an application; therefore, improved programming techniques and applications software engineering methods will be used to optimize and preserve this investment. This chapter presents a general overview of computer methods in geophysical reconnaissance; it is divided into two parts: geophysical methodology and software engineering.

Teleoperation is a technology that can provide significant health and safety improvements in mining operations by locating machine operators hundreds of meters away from the face area. The US Bureau of Mines recently developed a teleoperation system for continuous mining and haulage equipment. This system features near real-time closed-loop control. A prototype system was developed and demonstrated. This system could be used in thin-seam applications down to 36 in (914 mm). Provided are details of the teleoperation system, the results of testing and the expected applications of this technology.

Maintenance and inventory are usually the last items considered in mine development. They need to be addressed properly and early. The micro-computer brings sophistication within the reach of even the smallest mines. Maintenance and inventory programs, if properly installed, will reduce costs 15 to 25% and allow management time to address the mining and metallurgical problems at start up. Shops and warehouses are rarely designed properly. Large engineering firms spend 5 to 20 times more than is necessary for first class facilities. There is an optimum design, size, and layout. Take the time necessary to assure you get the right people, programs, and facilities in that order. Maintenance, inventory, and inventory control must be addressed early if a small mine is to have a chance at optimizing costs during the first two years of operation. This is hard work and is usually put on the back burner until the mine is in some degree of trouble. Hiring an experienced maintenance superintendent is important but it is not the complete solution. Maintenance systems, design of facilities, and use of computers are not skills that maintenance people usually have. In addition, the work of ordering spare parts and working with erection people is a full time job and any maintenance people on site during construction are quickly recruited. The end result is that few mines start up with an adequate Maintenance or Inventory System in place. The months, and in some cases years, that the mine attempts to operate without a system are both painful and expensive. Designs of successful integrated maintenance and inventory programs are virtually 100% supported with some outside assistance. Our system is the approach that we are most familiar with and this paper will isolate how Rushton International would go about setting up systems and designing support facilities. Micro-computers are the only way for a small mine to go. ~ini-computers cost more originally and operating costs are many times higher than even the most sophisticated micro system. Micro- computer software is developed further and recent advances in hardware makes medium priced units equal to most mini's in RAW COMPUTER POWER. Mines in general, and especially small mines, have no need for main frame power. MAINTENANCE A good maintenance program has: 1. Equipment Master List a. Equipment Detail Reports 2. Steady-state material balances calculated from data measured at various locations around process units are useful for many purposes, such as metallurgical accounting, on-line control, and the development of mathematical models. Often it is possible to calculate material balances by several independent procedures when excess measurement information, i.e., redundant data, is available. Clearly, if the data were collected without measurement errors, a theoretical condition never found in practice, all material balances calculated from redundant data would be in agreement. The real situation is that error exists in practical measurements, so that the results of material balances determined from available optional procedures differ. Consequently, best fit computational procedures to improve the material balances by taking measurement errors into account have been formulated. Such procedures can be used also to judge whether measurements are grossly in error due to either faulty observations or defective data sensing devices. A variety of mathematical techniques are available which serve to adjust raw data. The adjusted data permit mass balancing that does not depend on the computational method. To illustrate the need for an adjustment procedure, Table 1 shows a raw data set acquired around the Brenda Mines Ltd. No. 4 grinding circuit shown schematically in Fig. 1. The conveyor belt is the basic building block of a broad range of material handling applications in modern mining systems. The mining plans and site conditions dictate basic system requirements but this is only a part of total design evaluation. The total system in the typical mining situation can encompass all the activities from the excavators at the mining face to the processing plant, site loadout facilities and/or a power plant. The number of alternative configurations which must be evaluated including subsystems and components is limited only by analytical time and creativity. The constraints and issues which must be addressed continue to expand, driven by reliability, environmental impact and cost competitiveness. All of the system requirements must be translated into specifications for costing, final design and construction.

Performance assessments are carried out to monitor operations, to evaluate performance and to identify processing problems. The assessment involves collecting and analyzing representative samples from critical points in a flowsheet and interpreting the data. Sample analysis techniques include chemical analyses, mineralogical investigations, mineralogical analyses, and materials balancing. Chemical analyses provide the lowest cost assessment and should be used liberally, particularly in monitoring a process. Materials balances performed on chemical assays for a suite of samples are used as a first step in evaluating a process. Mineralogical investigations are more expensive than chemical analyses but need to be used only at the beginning of mining and metallurgical operations and as a second step in assessing processing problems. Quantitative mineralogical analyses combined with materials balancing provide the most complete performance assessment, but the procedure is expensive. On the other hand, the assessment has the potential of a large payback when carried out where warranted.

As hydrometallurgy matures as a technology, more of its existing process knowledge will continue to be summarized in the form of detailed mathematical models. This development is happening at a time when major improvements in computer hardware have reduced the cost of computing. The opportunity then exists, through the solution of these process models, to design, control, and optimize hydrometallurgical plants on the basis of the physics and chemistry of its processes and less on empiricism. In this paper, a review of the current capabilities of sensors and phenomenological models for selected hydrometallurgical processes is presented. Future trends, in terms of the control and optimization of hydrometallurgical plants, are then explored. The possibility of simultaneously optimizing plant design and associated process control system performance is discussed.

ABSTRACT The presence of gold in lateritic crusts over mafic and ultramafic volcanogenic complexes in / and greenstohe belts, has called the attention in several parts of Brazil and also in Australia. Recent studies reveal the variety of structures and mineralogy of such crusts, and their importance in correlation with host(bed) rock types, as exploration guides, specially for greenstone belt metallogeny. The expected nature of growth of plates and/or nuggets in such crusts is under detailed study, and is considered as possibly due to dissolution and reprecipitation phenomenae of disseminated-fine-low grade ore in the host rock, in this investigation, laterite geochemistry, though incipiently discussed todate, is of fundamental importance and significance. Lateritic gold can be classified texturally as: dusty and diffused, fine, thin platy, taDular, and nuggets. Such gold is pure, and is often restricted to nodular (pisoliths, ooliths, concretions) forms or the matrix, that constitute the crusts or lateritised gravel beds which have an essentially goetnitic nature. Further this gold is recovered directly by mining the crusts or the adjoining placers with the metal derived from them. The thickness and extension of laterite crust zones is extremely variable depending oh the paleoclimatic conditions, and is conditioned to the favourable lithology and its structural expression. However, the "growth" of gold in these laterites will be conductive , without doubt, to several small scale mining activities, specially in the developing countries and regions limited to latitudes 309N and 309S.
