Apatite ore plays a critical and irreplaceable role in fertilizer production and is being upgraded in quality in northern Vietnam. The old tailing of the Bac Nhac Son beneficiation plant (Vietnam) has a significant apatite amount in the form of coarse unliberated particles. These millions of tons of tailing ore have 6–8% of P2O5 content, which can be retreated to provide fertilizer factories. This work presents the results obtained in recovering apatite from this tailing in the laboratory. By the combination of the processes of classification, preliminary flotation, re-grinding and cleaning in the flotation column, an apatite concentrate of 30.68% P2O5 can be obtained with the total recovery of 37.76% from the initial tailing of 7.56% P2O5. The study results not only provide an appropriate technical solution for recovering the apatite ore from tailing ore but also have outstanding meaningness in the recovery of mineral resources under the context of a circular economy.

The P.W. Gillibrand Company has been processing and stockpiling a suite of heavy minerals at its Soledad Canyon Mine as co-products with construction aggregates since 1984. The heavy minerals are composed of ilmenite, magnetitie, apatite and zircon. The source of the heavy minerals is the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. The valuable minerals are readily amenable to standard ore dressing techniques, such as, gravity, magnetic, flotation and electrostatic separation with good recovery and product quality. More than 20,000 short tons of coarse ilmenite were sold in 1990 to the export market for titanium pigment production.

From 2013–2017, there were over 1,120 documented injuries, including fourteen fatalities, from ground falls in underground mines in the United States (MSHA 2017). The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft area of 8-gauge welded-wire screen were evaluated using a test frame designed for testing multiple load-pull locations. In previous tests, load-pull contact was always in the center of the bolted screen section. In this study, larger pull contact areas are used to simulate roof falls. The information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to better understand the loading behavior and surface control capability of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. Previous tests to evaluate the performance characteristics of various types of screen have been conducted by the University of Alberta (Tannant, 2001). In this study, the load-displacement properties of welded-wire, chain-link, and expanded-metal mesh were measured by performing full-scale pull tests. A flat steel plate was pulled through a screen test sample that was bolted to a special test frame while the pulling force and mesh displacement were measured. These tests established the general load-displacement behavior of the screen. Peak load capacities and stiffness were determined for each screen type, showing how welded-wire mesh has a much stiffer initial loading response, whereas chain-link and expanded-metal mesh have large displacement capabilities and exhibit significant post-peak ductility.

To assist in fulfilling the Bureau of Mines goals of maintaining adequate mineral supplies to meet national economic and strategic needs, and to minimize the environmental impacts associated with mineral-processing operations, a leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning technique was compared with a leaching-cementation technique for processing low-grade copper ores. Large-scale laboratory column leaching tests (6 to 7 tonnes) were conducted on minus 37-cm chalcocitic ore using ferric sulfate leach solutions at 25° C. Two columns contained 11 percent minus 1.27-cm fines, and two columns contained 32 percent minus 1.27-cm fines. After 416 days of leaching ore samples containing 11 percent minus 1.27-cm fines, copper extraction was 48 and 51 percent for the leach-cementation and leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning procedures, respectively. When leaching ore samples containing 32 percent minus 1.27-cm fines, the leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning technique extracted 60 percent of the copper after 568 days, whereas the leaching-cementation technique extracted only 48 percent of the copper. In the latter test, leach solution ponded on the ore, which reflected a decrease in ore column permeability. The decreased permeability was attributed to the generation of excessive amounts of iron salts during cementation; the salts precipitated on the fine ore particles and in the interstices, thus plugging the column. This decrease also lowered the available oxygen, resulting in poor aerobic bacterial activity which slowed the oxidation rate of ferrous ions to ferric ions. Sulfuric acid required to maintain a leachant pH of 2 was nearly halved when copper was recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning rather than by cementation.

Nickel demand is increasing along with the rising need for stainless steel and other alloy steel/iron. The small addition of nickel in such materials can improve impact strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. Nickel is generally obtained from nickel sulfide ores (nickel associated with sulfur) and nickel laterite ores (nickel associated with iron and magnesium silicate). Almost 60 percent of nickel is now produced from sulfide ores, despite its existence in sulfide ores being less than in laterite ores. However, the depletion of sulfide ore reserves makes the mastery of nickel laterite ore processing of important and immediate concern. Selective reduction followed by magnetic separation has been in development in lateritic nickel ore processing to overcome the issues of high energy consumption and pollution associated with conventional pyrometallurgy methods such as blast furnace and rotary kiln electric arc furnace (RKEF).

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) is leading an effort to develop the next generation of self-escape breathing apparatus for egress from confined spaces in emergency scenarios. A backpack style closed-circuit mine escape respirator design was one configuration explored as part of the research imperative directed by the 2006 MINER Act. Stakeholder feedback from MSHA and at the NIOSH Breathing Air Supply Partnership Meeting indicated a smaller belt worn unit that does not sacrifice performance is desirable. This paper outlines some further technology advancements that may be investigated toward developing such a small-sized respirator. Technologies being considered are novel chemicals for improved carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption and oxygen (O2) production, eliminating a dedicated CO2 scrubber by incorporating its function in the spaces of the respirator’s breathing loop and storing O2 in a liquid form with long standby capabilities. When these technologies are applied to a future design, there is the possibility of having an escape respirator that can be belt worn and capable of being certified to 42 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 84 standards, including sub-part O for escape purposes including mine escape. BACKGROUND NIOSH NPPTL has a Research and Development effort to provide mine workers with state-of-the-art breathing air technologies to comprehensively support initial and continued self-escape, refuge alternatives, and rescue needs, resulting from mine emergencies. As part of this R&D effort, NIOSH invested in the development of a next-generation closed-circuit mine escape respirator (CCMER) which would be compliant with NIOSH’s respirator standard requirements, 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 84, including sub-part O. The design features of the CCMER also address the MINER Act’s requirements for transitioning between devices without the need for doffing the initially donned device. It would also allow for improved protection when using voice communications with a donned device ."

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when an energy efficiency is calculated from Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

A mine is essentially a vast materials-handling system. All other systems found in the mine exist to one degree or another to support the materials-handling functions, from the cutting at the face to the hoisting in the shaft. In this chapter computerized planning of underground materials-handling systems will be examined by dividing this function into: (1) the planning of the production section, and (2) the planning of underground rail or belt haulage from the production section to the shaft, slope, or surface. While alternative divisions might focus on the different materials- handling functions, i.e., production, supply, and manpower transportation, historical computer analysis has focused on the various systems rather than functions. The emphasis in this chapter is directed toward coal mine applications; however, most of the programs and methods are equally applicable to other underground mines. Markedly different methods are encountered in each system, and moreover, marked differences exist in the nature and the degree to which the materials-handling subsystems in each interact with the environmental or support systems. The most intimate interaction exists at the faces where geologic, human, and machine performance factors are closely related and constantly varying. In view of this, the planning of the materials-handling systems for the face will usually stress flexibility, while the outby materials-handling systems will generally place decreasing emphasis on flexibility and more on system reliability, capacity, and cost effectiveness. Thus, hoisting and main haulage systems are generally designed and constructed as permanent installations and cannot be readily changed, whereas secondary haulage systems and face operations are relatively mobile. These differences may have considerable significance for the mine planner in making technical and financial comparisons of alternatives to provide the scheduled mine production.

Gallium (Ga) and Germanium (Ge) are essential strategic elements that are extensively used as semiconductors in many technological fields. Owing to their essential uses and supply disruption, Ga and Ge are deemed critical by the U.S. They are typically found as substitutions or inclusions in zinc minerals. However, their distributions within zinc minerals are not well understood. To address this, trace element and mineralogy analyses of representative samples obtained from an old high-zinc-grade tailing were performed using various qualitative and quantitative techniques. These techniques included Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Tescan Integrated Mineralogical Analysis (TIMA) with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Moreover, bench-scale froth flotation tests were conducted to enrich zinc minerals, the major hosts of Ga and Ge, using PAX as a collector, Na2S as a sulfidizer, Pb(NO3)2 as an activator, and MIBC as a frother. Comprehensive characterization analyses of the flotation products showed significant enrichment of Zn, Ga and Ge in the flotation concentrates.

The leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine has been studied using rotating disc. The variables studied J include the concentrations of lixiviants, rotation speed, pH of the solution, reaction temperature, and reaction product layer. The leaching rate was found to be independent with the disc rotating speed. The apparent activation energy was measured to be about 50 kJ/mole from 15°C to 35°C, and 30.3 kJ/mole from 35°C to 60°C. The American Concrete Institute defines "shotcrete" as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity unto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as "gunite," which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this paper. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, the then Chief Engineer of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, George Rice, developed the guntie process for underground test work at the bureau facility at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto Tunnel in California. The greatest development was In Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Intially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming; and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately niter the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the New Austrian Tunnel Method, or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the U.S. reliance on wood or steel supports in main line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support.

Requirements for full extraction in underground coal mining call for inexpensive, safe, techniques to be competitive with conventional methods. Longwall and shortwall systems are to some extent employed for this purpose. Another method would be rib pillar extraction (and pillar extraction). These methods are compared with each other with respect to procedure, equipment, safety, roof control, investment, output, performance, costs The advantages of r.p.e. show this method very attractive. Number and cost of equipment are lowest. Safety and roof control becomes improved by a mobile roof support recently developed in Austria. Its successful use in the R.S.A. is being explained.

A wind tunnel investigation into the fundamental characteristics of jet fan performance is described. The effects of varying fan positioning in a square tunnel cross section are reported for two fan outlet diameters and velocities. Tests were conducted, also for a jet fan placed in a flow developed by an external fan operating in the same direction as the jet fan. The position of the jet fan relative to the tunnel walls was found to affect its performance. Performance parameters were determined and used to formulate theoretical equations based on momentum and energy considerations. The results identified a range of flow ratios which can be used to design an effective jet fan ventilation system and provide a basis for the selection of jet fans for practical mining applications

Following an in-depth scenario and strategic-planning exercise in 1997, Noranda's mine production goal was set at 500 kt/a (550,000 stpy) of both copper and zinc metal in five years. There had been no recent discoveries, reserves were shrinking and things had to be done differently and quickly. Change is now continual in Noranda's program. The following steps were taken: the exploration and business development groups were combined, teams were formed to search for and respond to opportunity; geologists were coached to become more business minded and engineers were coached to become more optimistic; the company went global; clear thresholds were set, marginal properties were farmed out and other properties were fast tracked; reconnaissance exploration was focussed where there was a clear competitive advantage; and Noranda became a "flexible" partner to juniors and seniors. Is it working? A number of successes, near successes and outright failures are discussed. The main result is a much higher rate of opportunity flux, which is essential for success in the mining industry.

In the comparison and consideration of synthetic and natural materials, graphites represent a situation in which natural graphites amount to less than 10% of the total carbon and graphite production by weight, and less than 5% in dollar volume, There are few applications where it could not be re- placed by synthetic graphite. On the contrary, synthetic graphite materials can be engineered to cover an extremely wide range of applications. These include electrographite brushes for rotating machinery, pyrolytic graphite, graphite-impervious pipe, nuclear moderators, high purity spectrographic graphite, power tube anodes, graphite rotary shaft seals, and rocket nozzles. The special qualities of natural graphite and its limitations are delineated and the almost unlimited possibilities in artificial graphite materials are discussed.

Silica flotation with amine salts has been a commercial process for years in certain non-sulfide mineral systems. Phosphate rock and feldspar deposits are notable examples. Generally, the quartz is clean and coarse. Primary amines and imidazolines are used, usually in a mole weight range 250-300, ad often fairly impure grades of collectors are satisfactory. As the production of magnetic iron concentrates grew in Michigan, Minnesota, Canada and in foreign locations, the iron mining companies began to explore amine flotation of silica to improve these concentrates. Many of the mining companies, as well as reagent suppliers, government laboratories and university research teams, had already studied amine collectors for silica, but the application to magnetic iron concentrates presented a real commercial opportunity to apply the art. Amine flotation of silica has been accomplished by simple addition of a flotation cell, and possibly a regrind mill, at the end of the magnetic concentration process. The flotation system gave the mill operator a flexible method to control final grade caused by ore variations in the feed. It increased iron content with lower silica, which resulted in lower freight costs per unit Fe and better pellets for blast furnace use.

Since 1970, exploration has centred on the deposits at Soroako as the site for initial project development. This paper describes the exploration methods used to evaluate these rather unique laterite deposits, the geology of which is described in the first section of this volume.

The success of a mineral separation is commonly assessed from the separation curve, a graph of the recoveries achieved versus the corresponding separator settings. Two values characterize the curve, first the "splitpoint" which is the separator setting that produces a recovery of 50%, and second a measure for the separation sharpness. The splitpoint represents the "mean" while the measure for the separation sharpness represents the "scatter". In modelling the performance of crossflow separations the mean particle behavior is calculated from the force equilibrium that determines the particle trajectory which leads to a deterministic model. The scatter is then represented by a stochastic model. This presentation discusses the modeling of a crossflow separation and some implications with separation theory. The model is shown to successfully predict the performance of a magnetogravimetric separator.
