The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

The Cyprus Pinos Altos mine exploits small high grade Cu-Zn skarns using trackless equipment and a modified room and pillar mining method. The skarns occur around early Laramide diorite and quartz monzonite stocks. Stage I calc-silicates and sphalerite developed in the Pennsylvanian Magdalena Group between diorite and the marble front and were partially incorporated into a diffuse breccia body. Stage II calc-silicates and Cu sulfides formed in the contact zone with quartz monzonite and along NE-SW faults, overprinting stage I rocks and breccia. The result is a geologically complex deposit formed in two distinct pulses.

By 1968 Cyprus Pima was milling 38,000 tpd of copper ore using a conventional flowsheet consisting of three stages of crushing rod mills and ball mills. A 15,000 tpd expansion was put on stream late in 1971 using primary crushing, semiautogenous mills, and ball mills. Identical ore is treated in both concentrators. This paper shows the weight and life of each individual liner for each crusher and each mill over a four year period from 1974-1977. Power and media consumption are shown for the same period and a comparison is made between the two reduction methods.

Large tonnages of copper and molybdenum sulfide ore are treated by flotation. Substantial savings could be realized, particularly in high-capacity concentrators, by use of a simplified flotation technique involving lower reagent consumption. Chalcopyrite and molybdenite from some deposits can be floated by use of only a frother as a single flotation reagent; acceptable concentrate grade and recovery can be obtained. Separation of molybdenite from copper sulfides may become simpler and less costly. The genesis of the ore and the ions present in the flotation pulp liquid phase appear to be the major success-determining factors.

The Cresson Deposit is located in central Colorado within the historic Cripple Creek Mining District. The deposit has moved from its initial discovery in 1990 to full production in less than five years (current reserve nearly two million ounces). This accomplishment required a great deal of cooperative teamwork between the exploration, development, permitting and corporate groups. Nowhere was this cooperation more evident than in the construction of the geologic block model. The detailed modeling of gold and its metallurgical characteristics formed the foundation upon which critical financial and design decisions were based.

Using K-oleate as a collector and alizarin red S (ARS) as a modifying agent, selective depression of dolomite from francolite was achieved in alkaline medium (pH> 9.0). Interestingly. ARS was also found to depress igneous apatite in alkaline medium in oleate flotation of apatite and calcite. Adsorption of ARS alone on dolomite was found to be higher than that on francolite. Complimentary adsorption experiments of ARS and K-oleate showed that oleate adsorption was increased in the presence of ARS on francolite but not on dolomite. K-oleate adsorbs on both francolite and dolomite and causes precipitation of calcium and magnesium oleate. Such precipitates can be pre-vented when ARS is present. The results are explained in terms of competitive adsorption for the active sites on francolite and dolomite by oleate and ARS, and their interactions with dis-solved mineral species in solution.

An extensive program of marked ball wear testing (MBWT), laboratory corrosion studies, and worn ball surface analyses has been used to gain insight about the role of corrosion in the overall wear process. In some environments, localized corrosion is observed; the actual wear mechanisms in such cases are pitting/spalling and abrasion. Factors affecting the occurrence of pitting include the abrasiveness of the ore, corrosivity of the slurry, corrosion resistance of the media, and galvanic coupling effects. Elimination of pitting substantially improves overall wear resistance. When pitting is not observed, the contributions of general corrosion are significantly less.

Using the newly developed and permitted explosive Pentadyne-HP (Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd., Hyderabad), the Blasting Department of the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad experimented at the GDK-5 Incline, RG-1 Area of the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) to establish one modified angular cut blasting pattern as an alternative to conventional solid blasting in India to obtain longer pull, as well as to achieve at least 40 t of coal in a single blast round for the deployment of diesel load-haul-dump units at the face. This permitted explosive satisfied the statutory requirements of incendivity characteristics applicable to P5 explosives of the regulatory agency Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) of India. The present paper summarizes the development of this new blasting pattern and its possible use in Indian coal mines.

Depression of copper sulfides followed by MoS2 flotation is the most commonly practiced technique for Cu-MO separation. Although numerous organic depressants have been developed in the past, a majority of the currently used copper depressants are inorganic compounds (ex. NaHS, Nokes reagent, etc.). A unique advantage of organic depressants over the inorganic compounds is the potential versatility for design of the organic molecule to suit many requirements. The present study was initiated to systematically investigate the structure- activity relationships for a large number of organic complexing agents in comparison with the commonly used inorganic depressants that are often inefficient and hazardous. The results obtained in this study are discussed in light of the useful correlation obtained between practical solution redox potential and depressant activity. Several requirements, such as the presence of an active -SH and hydrophilic -OH or -COOH in the organic molecule, are identified for a reagent to be a satisfactory depressant. Some preliminary results on the desorbability (or destruction) of collector coating on the sulfide surfaces in the non-xanthate collector systems are also discussed.

Establishing suitable control of pH, a requirement in a number of mineral and chemical industries, poses a difficult problem because of inherent nonlinearities and frequently changing process dynamics. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for effectively controlling such systems. This technique successfully combines the process control capabilities of fuzzy logic and the search capabilities of genetic algorithms. Fuzzy logic offers an effective mechanism for handling nonlinearities, while genetic algorithms can provide fuzzy logic controllers with real-time adaptive capabilities. This Bureau-developed technique is applied to a laboratory acid-base neutralization experiment. Nonlinearities in the laboratory system are associated with the logarithmic pH scale and the changing process dynamics are due to alterations in pH and buffering capacity input solutions. Results indicate fuzzy logic controllers augmented with genetic algorithms offer a powerful alternative to conventional process control techniques in such nonlinear, rapidly changing systems.

The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.

A collaborative research programme called 'DEEPMINE' was established in 1998 to investigate and research the problems of mining below three and five kilometres depths. Backfill is considered as an important support strategy to alleviate rockburst and rockfall problems in current depths and it will even become a more crucial mining strategy at ultra-deep level mining. In this paper, the evaluation and the application of the current backfill design criteria to the ultra-deep level mining environment are studied and a new backfill design criteria is proposed. The new criteria suggests that backfill should still be placed 60 - 70% of the area mined with a maximum fill to face distance of three metres. Furthermore, the vertical stress generated in backfill should be between 2 - 3 MPa at maximum 25 metres from the face at a corresponding strain value of maximum 10%.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. It is also a major exporter of minerals. Canadian open pits are highly mechanized and use state of the art equipment and support technology. During the past few years significant productivity improvements have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment; in pit crushing and conveying; truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments in Canadian Open-pit Mining are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of Global Positioning Systems. Mine planning is computerized; environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning; equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian North.

This paper addresses considerations for the use of artificial support of pit walls in surface mines, a new project of the Bureau of Mines. Results to date indicate that a polymer-coated cable with embedded grit could provide good anchorage for stabilizing benches and highwalls, and an electronic method of recording discontinuities in the field is being reviewed and developed for application to mining. The objectives of the work in progress are to define the engineering parameters and evaluate the concepts for artificial supports in order to provide safe working environments when pit slopes are steepened to increase ore recovery and reduce overburden handling.

Mineral properties and mineral firms often trade at a market value that is significantly greater than the value indicated by discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques. A possible explanation is that DCF analysis does not consider the value derived from managerial flexibility. Presumably, then, at least some of the difference between DCF value and market value is due to managerial flexibility. This paper surveys the recent attempts to empirically quantify the value of managerial flexibility using option pricing theory. The results indicate that managerial flexibility, at least as measured by the option pricing methodology, falls well short of explaining the gap between DCF value and market value.

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million ton'> of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization -"scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who burn coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. Canada's coal production is approximately 65.4 million tonnes of which 95 % is produced by surface mining methods mostly from the three Western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan). The mines are highly mechanized; productivity gains during the past few years have ranged from 60 -80%. Truck/Shovel methods are common although Saskatchewan lignite is almost exclusively mined by draglines. This paper provides an overview of Canadian Coal mining industry vis a vis surface mining. Emphasis is on application and utilization of mining equipment and associated mining methods.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 2,903 t (3,200 st) of ore per day, with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine’s horizontal extent is large, 762 by 152 m (2,500 by 500 ft), while its vertical extent is 6 to 61 m (20 to 200 ft). A high density of joints occurs within the host rock. Based on rock mass rating and field observation, the ground conditions at Leeville can be characterized as poor to very poor. As such, heavy ground support is required for its mining operation. Ore zones with a height in excess of 10 m (35 ft) are considered for longhole stoping. A typical stope measures 6 m (20 ft) wide, 30 to 55 m (100 to 180 ft) long, depending on the ground conditions, and 10 to 30 m (35 to 100 ft) high, depending the thickness of the ore body, yielding 9,100 to 18,000 t (10,000 to 20,000 st) when completed. Narrow ore zones, less than 10 m (35 ft), are mined using cut and fill. Drifts at the Leeville Mine are 4.6 m (15 ft) wide by 4.6 m (15 ft) high. Because of poor ground conditions at this mine, the establishment of a ground control monitoring system is key to operating both safely and successfully. This monitoring system is composed of comprehensive instrument design and installation. Instruments include multi-point borehole extensometers (MPBX) and “stretch measurement to assess reinforcement tension” (SMART) cables. The monitoring system covers the mining zones and infrastructure openings. After about two years’ application and measurement, useful data has been collected and continues to be collected; this information will be used to design future stopes and infrastructure. The system makes engineering and operation teams able to do their job with more confidence and efficiency.
