How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society's Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC's Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society's business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth's mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society's specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Board of Directors accepted the following proposed purpose of SME: "To further the professional development and well-being of its members by publishing and distributing technical writings, news, and information; by sponsoring meetings of members; by providing forums for discussions and for continuing education; and by fostering communication on the subjects within its purview. A large underground cavern with dimensions of 25m × 175m × 49m (W×L×H) was excavated in sandstone and siltstone to house 4 units of hydropower generator and was completed in 2000. In feasibility study stage, the property of the siltstone which governs the ceiling of the cavern was questionable due to slaking phenomenon. Parameters on rock properties for design were back calculated from actual ground response measured from a trial excavation. For safety of construction, comparison between prediction and actual ground responses during excavation had proceeded. The prediction was provided by means of PHASES and PHASE2 software and the actual rock response was detected by the provided monitoring system.

Bolting solutions traditionally offered only wet drilling or dry drilling options; each with advantages and disadvantages. Joy Mining Machinery has developed a Mist Drilling System that incorporates the best of both types of drilling. Compared to wet drilling, mist drilling offers as much as a 90% reduction in water use. As a result, floor and roof conditions are tremendously improved. This offers a safer and more comfortable work environment for operators. Mist drilling can offer a significant reduction in noise levels compared to dry drilling and in recent trials, bit life has been greatly improved. In 1990, a residential area above the North Outfall Sewer (NOS) tunnel constructed in 1924, experienced subsidence. After sewage was diverted into the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS), soil probing from within the tunnel was conducted, soil-improvement options were developed, and a preferred grouting scheme was analyzed by numerical modeling to evaluate the stability of the 80-year+ old tunnel liner under grouting-induced loading conditions. This paper discusses the initial field investigation and the development and analysis of a grouting scheme originally intended to be implemented before relining of the tunnel. The scheme was later modified, and the new liner was installed before the final probing and grouting work was done.

In the past decade Australia has seen the development, construction and commissioning of three complex processing plants for the treatment of lateritic nickel ores. These have all been based on high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) for extraction of nickel and cobalt into solution, followed by solid liquid separation in a CCD circuit. However, flowsheets for separation and purification of the nickel and cobalt diverge markedly. The existing plants have been commissioned with varying degrees of success, with a variety of problems ranging from materials of construction to inadequate design. While the process problems are not insurmountable, there is much room for improvement. Currently there are several new HPAL plants at the feasibility or financing stage. All of these have adopted one of the existing flowsheets. Most of the enhancements have focused on increasing autoclave size. It is now time to assess the success and failures of the three existing plants and incorporate this experience in a design for productivity, efficiency and reliability. Towards this end, this paper discusses aspects of flowsheet optimization, materials of construction and engineering design.

In situ stresses are one of the key inputs to a successful underground excavation design. Because of the complex mechanisms involved in arriving at the current state of stress at a point in the Earth’s crust, often the only reliable way of estimating in situ stresses is by actual measurement. In the United States coal mines, overcoring relief method is by far the most popular technique used for estimating the virgin stress field. Typically, for stress measurement with overcoring, a vertical borehole is drilled into the roof or floor of an underground coal mine opening to a certain distance and change in borehole diameter is monitored at multiple points along the length of the hole when this borehole is overcored. For the measured stresses to represent the pre-mining stress field, the measurement points should be located beyond the influence zone of the mine opening. Actual data from several US coal mines have been collected to check if the measured stresses by overcoring represent true in situ stresses. The data indicate that most of the stress measurements were within the excavation influence zone. A three-dimensional numerical modeling methodology was applied to one of the collected cases to correct the measured stresses for the excavation influence. The modeling approach demonstrated the usefulness of integrating numerical modeling into a stress measurement program to estimate ‘true’ in situ stresses.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

It is an honor to present the lecture in honor of Daniel C. Jackling, the developer of the technology of copper mining that we continue to use 100 years later. He made a dramatic breakthrough in the early part of this century in the development of bulk-mining methods for large, low-grade porphyry copper-sulfide ore bodies. At Magma Copper, we are particularly proud that the Jackling Award states we have "made significant contributions to technical progress." Before Jackling's time, copper mining had exploited with primitive equipment very high-grade underground ore bodies and high-grade open pits. During the 20th century, the situation changed. Three significant innovations occurred within about 10 years around the turn of the century. In 1903, Jackling's concept of large-scale mining with steam shovels and rail haulage was implemented at the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah. Eighty years after the introduction of rail haulage, the mine converted to truck haulage with large-capacity high-efficiency haul trucks and reduced the stripping ratio from 3.5:1 to less than 1:1.

Wet desulfurization of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal and Illinois No. 6 coal were conducted with sodium hypochlorite in the laboratory. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was leached by hypochlorite at high pHs in one step only. The hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.6 molar; sodium hydroxide concentration, from 0.2 to 0.8 molar; and temperature was at the levels of 80 and 90°C. The desulfurization of Illinois No. 6 coal was conducted in three consecutive steps of pretreatment in concentrated ammonia at room temperature, leaching with hypochlorite at room temperature and hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution at 90°C. In the leaching step, hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.8 molar. The desulfurization method of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was found to reduce mainly pyritic sulfur. More than 70% of pyritic sulfur removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.4 molar hypochlorite, 0.4 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The desulfurization method for Illinois No. 6 coal was capable of reducing significant amounts of organic sulfur. The removal of organic sulfur achieved a 37.8% reduction at the optimum operation of leaching at 0.4 molar hypochlorite and room temperature followed by hydrolysis at 0.3 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The chlorine content in the coal produced by the chlorination during leaching was kept below the threshold value of 0.3% at the optimum conditions of the desulfurization method for each coal.

"A reliable supply of non-energy raw materials is a precondition for the functioning of the European economy. In line with its importance, the issue of raw materials supply has become more prominent in the past years, especially owing to turbulent raw material markets. However, these turbulences are not due to depletion of the geological resources but to a missmatch of (expected) supply and (expected) demand, with several interacting factors influencing the markets both from the supply as well as from the demand side. A recent evaluation, published in June 2010 within the framework of the EU Raw Materials Initiative, sought to bring together these two sides of raw material markets and asked the question "which raw materials are critical for the EU?" Herein we present the methodology used by the Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials and the results obtained, complemented by results from the study "Raw Materials for Emerging Technologies"."

Bortech’s BoreClad corrosion protection system will be displayed at MINExpo. BoreClad is an innovative system for inside diameter cladding of nozzles, tubes and other circumferential devices. Pressure vessels, mud pumps and other mining equipment must be protected from corrosive caustic chemicals. Usually manufactured from mild steel, they can be clad with a protective material, such as stainless steel, to provide corrosion resistance. However, most welding processes leave voids where corrosion can damage the base metal. BoreClad provides void-free welds by combining gas metal arc welding with automated feed and rotation of chuckable parts. Workpieces of up to 915-mm- (36-in.-) long with a 460-mm- (18-in.-)swing can be clad with stainless steel, Iconel or other exotic metals. INTRODUCTION The method of heat removal during a casting process strongly influences the crystal morphology of the cast product and hence the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the solidified materials. In this paper, the Ohno Continuous Casting Process (OCC) is described in terms of the casting conditions and the type of structure observed in the cast product. Significant improvements are observed in workability, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of castings produced by the OCC method, Ohno (1988). Applications of this technique to low melting point nonferrous metals and alloys are discussed. The feasibility of the application of this technology to high melting point materials is outlined. THE OCC PROCESS The OCC process involves delivering liquid metal into a heated mold, the temperature of which is held just above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast. This is the key point which differentiates the OCC process from the conventional continuous casting method. A schematic illustration of the OCC process is shown in Figure 1. The Formation of a Single Crystal When the mold is heated above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast, nucleation on the mold surface is prevented and solidification takes place only at the mold exit. The heat is extracted through the product being cast by a cooling device located near the mold outlet. Crystals are formed only at the tip of the dummy bar at the start of casting, and as the dummy bar travels away with a progressively increasing speed from the mold, the position of the solid liquid interface will align with the mold exit, producing a unidirectionally

The California High Speed Rail Authority (Authority) was created by the State of California through legislation in 1996. The purpose of the Authority is to plan, construct, finance and operate a statewide intercity high speed passenger rail system. In 2004 the Authority prepared a programmatic level environmental document in compliance with the California Environmental Quality and National Environmental Protection Acts (CEQA and NEPA).The Authority and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) were the lead agencies overseeing the development of the environmental documentation. The resulting document includes two volumes and 64 supplemental technical reports analyzing the transportation needs for California and the selection of an approach to meeting the project transportation needs. The Programmatic Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) identified High Speed Rail as the most environ-mentally protective, sustainable and economical approach to meeting the state?s projected transportation needs.

Many investigators measured surface forces between hydrophobic macroscopic surfaces using atomic force microscope (AFM). Some investigators observed long-range attractions and attributed them to the presence of hydrophobic forces, while others suggested that they are artifacts of the nano-bubbles and cavities associated with the hydrophobic surfaces. Still others suggested that the long-range attractions are due to the electrostatic interactions between charged patches present on opposing surfaces and hence are unrelated to surface hydrophobicity. In the present work, we have measured long-range attractions between gold- (or silver-) coated surfaces hydrophobized in potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions at pH 9.2 under controlled potential conditions. The results of our AFM force measurements are consistent with those of the contact angle and voltammetry experiments, indicating that the long-range attractions are hydrophobic forces.

Mine Terex articulated dump trucks are working on a large restoration project of an abandoned open cast coal site in Blacklaw, central Scotland. The project is part of the construction of a 42-turbine wind farm complex. During the scheduled 18-month duration of the project, three 28-t(31-st) Generation 7 TA30 dump trucks and the six 36.5-t (40-st) TA40articulated trucks are estimated to move about 1Mm3 (1.3 million cu yd)of material. The trucks are working12-hour shifts, 5.5days a week.

If you build a big truck, build a big tire to match it. Let that haulage synergy aid the economics, productivity and lessened maintenance for the unit. Now, Cater-pillar and Michelin have done just that. Discussions began in 1996. Caterpillar was making plans for its 797 ultra-class haul truck. The development team realized the need for a tire that could withstand extreme loads. The 797 would weigh 558 t (615 st) and be capable of 64 km/h (40 mph) speeds. So Caterpillar approached Michelin. The two companies realized the benefits of jointly developing a tire for the 797.

Vertically stirred media mills are a highly effective low-footprint solution for the ultrafine grinding of industrial minerals. This work investigates the effect of media density on flow patterns within the mill. Direct irradiation of a media particle leads to decay through positron emission, consequently forming two anti-parallel gamma rays, which allow for the real time tracking of particle position. Grinding media of the same size, but with a range of specific gravities are followed using this method, and the effect on the flow within the mill is revealed. The technique is seen to be an effective method to highlight the velocity profiles within the mill, as well as the zones where grinding is less efficient ? areas of relatively low velocity and high residence time. The changing media is seen to effect the overall flow patterns within the mill, having consequential effects on the efficiency of the grind.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts of fine bulky materials (<3 mm). These wastes are mostly given to specialized landfill sites. Starting out from classical and traditional beneficiation processes a new research project was initiated to work on certain new ways to efficiently separate plastic material mixes. First basic results show that the use of new and improved thermal beneficiation methods is a great implementation in the field of plastics separation. The results can be further increased by a suitable combination with other methods as well. This leads to high-quality and almost pure separated plastics and rubber products, easy to sell on recycling product markets.

The paper summarises the results of a recent study of minerals planning policies of the Member States of the EU. The study has shown that contrary to the public opinion the production of industrial minerals and construction minerals is significant the former accounting for about 20 percent of global production, the latter amounting to about 3 billion tonnes per annum. In contrast the importance of metal ores has diminished although metal production in some European countries can still be significant. The study revealed that very few Member States have clearly defined mineral policies. Common to most mineral policies is the emphasis on reducing minerals consumption and recycling whereas the important aspect protecting access to minerals resources is not adequately addressed by most policies. Access to mineral deposits is regulated in most Member States by land use legislation and administration. Information on mineral deposits in land use planning data bases tends to be scarce. This together with the absence of formal mineral policies places minerals at a disadvantage in land use decision making. The emergence in the recent past of environmental legislation and in particular environmental impact assessments has had a crucial effect on the duration of the authorization process for new mineral projects. Examples are given how minerals planning is handled in some of the Member States.

As part of a $2.2 Billion bridge project that will link Indiana and Kentucky, an interchange project northeast of Louisville will require the mining of a 6-lane tunnel system about 2,000 ft long in order to cross beneath the historic Drumanard Estate. This paper will discuss preliminary engineering that has been undertaken to compare two-bore and three-bore layouts, the planning of an exploratory tunnel facility, and the potential for including a test chamber to investigate the ability of high capacity roadheaders to mine the 22,000 psi limestones.
