"Cyclic voltammetry experiments were conducted on copper and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in the absence and presence of ethyl xanthate, and compared to mass-balanced EH–pH diagrams. The results for copper duplicate those found in the literature and confirm xanthate chemisorption. However, the, results indicate that chalcopyrite oxidizes to chalcocite (Cu2S) and only afterwards is chemisorption observed due to small currents appearing with xanthate. This phenomenon suggests that the mineral's hydrophobicity is induced by more than dixanthogen and copper xanthate. Hydrophobicity was found to be pH-dependent over a range of alkaline conditions (pH 7–11) at narrow potentials (0 to –200 mV). An EH–pH diagram for chalcopyrite with xanthate is presented to illustrate the conditions under which chalcopyrite would be hydrophobic and thereby more thoroughly explain the results in the literature. IntroductionSulphide minerals are generally concentrated from ores by froth flotation, a physiochemical process that induces separation based on differences in hydrophobicity. In this process, a gas is bubbled into a slurry and the minerals that are hydrophobic (water-repelling) adhere to the bubbles and float to the surface while the hydrophilic (water-loving) minerals remain in the slurry. With sulphide minerals, the hydrophobicity is generally established in two ways. The first is by the addition of a collector, which is a heteropolar molecule with a reactive inorganic head group and an inert organic tail. Typically, the head group bonds with the sulphide mineral surface by adsorbtion either chemically (chemisorption) or physically (physisorption) or by complexing with atoms that solubilize somewhat at the surface (surface precipitation). These interactions leave the organic tail protruding from the mineral surface, thereby inducing hydrophobicity. The second method is by oxidation of the mineral surface to form a layer that is metal-deficient/sulphide-rich or comprised of elemental sulphur. Because the layer mimics naturally hydrophobic sulphur, this enables ‘collectorless’ flotation. Furthermore, this oxidation phenomenon adds an electrochemical dimension to the understanding of sulphide mineral flotation."

The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. One of the most critical and complicated steps in mine design is a suitable mining method selection based upon geological, geotechnical, geographical and economical parameters. Since there are many factors involved in mining method selection, the decision-making process is very difficult. In this paper, the Analytical Hierarchy Process, with 13 criteria, is used to develop a suitable mining method for the Golbini No. 8 deposit in Jajarm (Iran). Six alternatives (conventional cut and fill, mechanized cut and fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel stoping, bench mining, and stull stoping) are evaluated. The studies show that the suitable mining method for this deposit in the present situation is the conventional cut and fill method.

In the mining and metals industry, business strategy demands that leaders extract more from any set of capital assets. This improvement is achieved through a combination of continuous improvement and upgrading of the assets. Continuous Improvement involves a series of incremental changes in the workplace to stabilize the process, remove waste, and test the limits of process capability. Enhanced Technology involves the replacement of an existing as set with a different process or equipment, to achieve a similar function in a more efficient and effective manner. The paper compares and contrasts the two methodologies and outlines the key business considerations which dictate how and when to select one or other improvement method. The paper also addresses the implications for these two improvement methods for those undertaking R&D in support of the mining and metals business.

This paper investigates the effect of chemical and physical operational parameters on the reverse flotation of Timbopeba itabirite iron ore in a pilot-scale pneumatic flotation cell. Operational parameters include collector and depressant dosages, feed rate, superficial gas velocity and solids concentration. Results show that increasing collector dosage results in an increase in quartz recovery, particularly for the coarser quartz where recovery increases by nearly 30%. Increasing depressant dosage results in a decrease in both quartz recovery and hematite loss, for the coarser hematite particles. Increasing the feed rate has no effect on quartz recovery or hematite loss, suggesting that the pneumatic flotation cell is not residence time constrained. Increasing the superficial gas velocity results in an increase in quartz recovery to an optimum at a Jg of around 0.6 cm/s after which it decreases significantly, particularly for the coarser particles where recovery decreases by as much as 50%. Decreasing the solids concentration does not affect quartz recovery but results in significant decreases in hematite loss. Here, fine and coarse hematite loss decreases from around 25% to 12% and 10% to 2% respectively. Superficial gas velocity and solids concentration are operating parameters which have the largest effect on the flotation performance of the pneumatic flotation cell. Results suggest that this flotation cell should be operated at relatively low superficial gas velocities and solids concentrations. However, these are pilot-scale findings and would need to be tested at an industrial-scale where different operating conditions may be optimal. This paper summarizes the works that the Research “Group of Ground Engineering”, belonging to the Mining Department of the University of Oviedo, Spain, has been developing in close cooperation with the Regional Mining Department, since 2001, in order to control and monitor an experimental underground limestone exploitation by the room and pillars method. The aim of the current research is not only the geotechnical characterization of the rock mass (by means of laboratory and site tests) or the instrumentation of its displacements and stress changes (using convergence meters, INCREX probe, extensometers and rigid inclusion cells), but, moreover, to undertake intensive monitoring and control of such pilot mine, which is mined exclusively in order to accomplish this research. The data transmission was made on line via Internet, to achieve a full understanding of the behaviour of the experimental mine, to access data from remote locations and to visualize results from a website. All the collected information becomes input data for several numerical models using finite differences under a program developed in the research Group, ALMEC. The simulation and a final economical analysis lead to a design of an underground exploitation, at production scale, for a resource that is traditionally mined by means of open-pit process methods that could be worked underground with less environmental impact. The main purpose achieved by this exhaustive analysis is the technical and economic viability of such mine, for their optimisation for a future productive exploitation.

Copper electrowinning models are useful for prediction of process performance, optimisation and improved understanding of complex phenomena such as current distribution without the expense of physical experiments. Recently, finite element models such as those generated in COMSOL Multiphysics have been developed for the electrowinning process. The predictive capacity of these models is improved by incorporating physical and chemical phenomena. Since physicochemical properties of electrolytes can have a significant effect on the quality of copper produced, this work was conducted to investigate the effect of such properties on electrodeposition at varying levels of copper, sulphuric acid concentration, iron concentration and temperature, in the presence of a smoothing agent. Tests were conducted at conditions similar to those for industrial copper electrowinning. Mathematical correlations were developed for the following properties; density, conductivity and diffusivity which were compared to existing models in literature and thereafter applied in a COMSOL generated model. The model predicts, current distribution at the cathode surface, deposit thickness (morphology), concentration of species within the cell and current efficiency. Current distribution output shows the impact of several phenomena on the deposit generated including the relationship between increasing copper concentration and current density and lack of influence of acid concentration on this property. One of the key issues facing gold producers is the management of cyanide and the implementation of the International Cyanide Management Code. Many operations now use cyanide destruction processes to ensure that the material being discharged to the tailings dam is compliant with regulatory requirements and the International Cyanide Management Code. One of the problems for operations is the quantification of both cyanide species and their reaction products throughout the leach and destruction circuits. Therefore methods have been developed utilizing high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure free cyanide, cyanide complexes of metals such as copper and iron, and other species formed from reactions in leaching and cyanide destruction, including cyanate, thiocyanate, and sulphur species (eg. sulphite, thiosulphate and sulphate). This enables a complete mass balance for cyanide and sulphur in both leaching and cyanide destruction. This paper outlines the methodology which has been developed and discusses the application of these methods in the fundamental research currently being conducted on the impact of sulphide minerals in cyanidation and cyanide destruction chemistry.

ABSTRACT: The paper describes the application of both continuum and discontinuum modelling to the study of the stability conditions of the Alpetto mine, a high rock cut located in Cesana Brianza (Italy). The main objective is to provide valuable information for future mine planning and for the assessment of the stability conditions of the abandoned high rock cuts. Continuum modelling involved the applications of the finite difference method, whereas the distinct element method was used for discontinuum modelling. RESUME: L'article décrit l'application des méthodes de modélisation continue/discontinue pour l'étude des conditions de stabilité de la mine d' Alpetto, située à Cesana Brianza (Italie). Le but du travail consiste à determiner des paramètres utiles vis-à-vis du projet et d'estimer les conditions de stabilité de l'amas rocheux au terme de l'exploitation de la mine susmentionnée. La modélisation continue a impliqué l'application de la méthode des différences finis alors que la méthode des éléments distincts a été utilisée pour la modélisation discontinue. KURZFASSUNG: Der Artikel beschreibt die Verwendung der Modellierung von continuum und discontinuum zur Untersuchung/Studium der Stabilitätsbedingungen von der Alpetto Mine, hohe Aushubsfront in einer Felsmasse die sich in der Gemeinde von Cesana Brianza befindet. Das Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist die Festlegung von Parametern die zur Planung nützlich/behilflich sein können sowie auch die Möglichkeit zur Analyse/Auswertung der Stabilität der Felsmasse-Front nach Aufhebung der Nutzung derselben. Die continuum Methode/Analyse wurde verwendet durch Unterstützung der Finite Differenz Methode da man für die Analyse der discontinuum (Fels als discontinuum beschrieben) der Distinct Elemente Methode verwendet hat.

While the refractory lining contains the process on a steady-state basis, the tap-hole must provide a channel for transport of molten materials at discreet intervals, with thermal cycling as routine. The tap-hole introduces a discontinuity in any lining, and this fact can lead to failure in the region around the tap-hole before general lining failure occurs. Hence there is a need for a rapid and reliable tap-hole repair technique that can be readily implemented in conjunction with all types of linings. The UCAR®V Repair supplied by GrafTech is a durable solution capable of repairing all types of lining designs and has been extensively utilized in the ferroalloy industry. More than 20 UCAR®V Repairs have been successfully performed in South Africa alone. This paper describes the system in general and reviews recent repairs and their unique challenges.

The minerals industry is committed to the principles of sustain-ability. Reducing water consumption is a priority area, especially for regions of water scarcity. This paper presents a systemic optimization of the water balance of the Skorpion Zinc refinery with the aim of reducing water consumption. An Aspen Plus simulation of the process is used. The validity of the simulation is tested by measuring key output variables and comparing results to plant data. A number of water minimization scenarios are investigated, Including unit operation and circuit configuration changes. The scenarios leading to the largest reduction in water consumption are through the full recycle of treated effluent water, which results in water savings of up to 19%. Reducing process water and/or recycling of untreated water is prohibited by the build-up of trace elements, which affect product purity. The Skorpion process already features a highly optimized water balance, with unit operational changes merely resulting in a shift in the water balance. Consequently, the largest area for improvement is through the re-use of effluent water. Keywords Skorpion zinc water usage, process optimization, sustainability.

Kleinkopje Colliery has five Wemco drums that were installed and commissioned in 1978. Over the years, there have been remarkable changes in mining and geological conditions at the colliery. First, an increase in the percentage of fines was recorded, which resulted in an uneven split or an imbalance in silo levels between material feeding the cyclone (-12 mm) and Wemco drum (+12 mm) sections respectively. This problem was solved by doing modifications around the banana screens to allow finer material to the drums. The imbalance challenge was then followed by spontaneous combustion that takes place in situ and results in low product yield. The results obtained from efficiency tests indicate that although there is a limit in the percentage of -6 mm material in the feed, Wemco drums are still very efficient and applicable to the current mining conditions. These results also suggest that it is essential to lower the throughput when the drums are treating low yielding coal.

An analysis of the state-observability characteristics of a dynamic tank-to-tank model of a flotation bank indicates that the concentrate-flow rate of each tank can be estimated from accurate measurements of the pulp height in each tank and the final tailings flow-rate exiting the final tank. Therefore, there is an opportunity to construct an observer (model-based soft-sensor) which can estimate the concentrate flow-rate of tanks in a flotation bank. The concentrate flow-rate, i.e. mass pull, is generally measured by means of froth image analysers on industrial plants. A model-based soft-sensor will not only provide a means to validate froth image analyser results, but could potentially substitute them as they are less expensive to implement and maintain. Deposits of copper-porphyry type occupy a leading position in the mineral resource base of the world copper industry. They are characterized by large and gigantic scales, often complex composition, their development is carried out in an open way. The raw material base of the Russian copper industry is mainly sulfide copper-Nickel and copper-pyrite ores. Exploration of copper-porphyry deposits and the creation of long-term large mining facilities on their basis is one of the most promising and priority tasks for the Russian industry. This task is especially acute for the copper enterprises of the Urals in connection with the depletion of copper - pyrite ore reserves. In recent years, Russia has carried out a large complex of studies on the composition and technology of processing of copper-porphyry ores of different subtypes. In this work the complex poor copper-molybdenum-gold ore of one of the deposits is investigated. The chemical and mineral composition of the ore containing 0.49% copper, 0.020% molybdenum, 0.39 g/t gold, 5.85 g/t silver was determined. The forms of finding metals and their distribution by size classes are established. The dependence of extraction of metals into concentrates of collective-selective flotation on the size of ore grinding, pH of the medium, reagent consumption is shown. Under optimal flotation conditions, copper concentrate with 18.6% copper content and 92.32% extraction and molybdenum concentrate with 21.5% molybdenum content and 73.4% extraction were obtained. With a high concentration of molybdenum in selective flotation products, it is possible to conclude about the expected molybdenum concentrate with a content of 45% and a recovery of 70%. Managers need quality information for effective decision making. This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems. The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. In- corporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined.

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

The mining industry remains the backbone of many economies in the developing world. Its resurgence in Ghana since 1989 was driven by the global paradigm which emphasizes private sector-led development as the engine of economic growth in developing countries. The historical importance of mining in the economic development of Ghana is evident in the country?s colonial name, Gold Coast (Akabzaa T. and Darimani A., 2001). Ghana earned $2.5 billion from mineral exports in 2007. 20,000 people are employed in large-scale mining whilst 500,000 are employed in the small-scale sector. Mining contributes about 7% of Ghana?s total corporate tax earnings, 41% of total exports, 12% of revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service and 5% of Gross Domestic Product (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2008). Gold dominates the mining sector and the country is Africa?s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Surface Mining, which refers to a method of extracting minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrows, requires a large tract of land for its operations (Wikipedia, 2008). There is therefore a continuous divergence of interest between land required for surface mining and other land uses such as farming and housing, among others. In recent years, surface mining has been promoted in many mining countries because of the following reasons: ?Cost considerations compared to underground mining; ?Safety considerations, compared to underground mining; ?Low grade ore which requires processing huge quantities; ?Location of the ore bodies; and ?Competition among gold producing countries for investors. This paper looks at the socio-economic impacts and challenges of surface mining by using Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. Tarkwa, Ghana as a case study. The company has a concession of about 208 sq km located in the heart of the Wassa communities in the Western Region of Ghana and undertakes surface mining like most of the other mining companies in the country. Gold Fields, Tarkwa mine produces 700,000 ounces of gold a year with the potential of increasing this output to 800,000 ounces after its current expansion programme. Some of the effects of surface mining identified were: 1. Relocation/Resettlement of host communities and its negative effects; 2. Disturbance to Flora and Fauna; 3. Disturbance to Sacred Places; 4. Land Degradation; 5. Noise and Air Pollution; and 6. Water Pollution. This paper sought to investigate the measures put in place by the government and the Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. to mitigate the above effects in order to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mining company and its host communities. It concludes that most mining companies presume the provision of socio-economic development in mining communities will lead to the company securing a social license to operate. This however is not true but rather effective community relations combined with socio-economic development. According to Gold Fields Ghana Ltds. model, this involves continuous community engagement, conflict resolution and comprehensive environmental monitoring programme which will all lead to effective community relations. The strategies to ensure socio-economic development involves community development programme, livelihood restoration programme and community training and employment. All these will then lead to sustainable development which will ensure the company?s social license to operate. Gold Fields? model is in line with the principles of responsible mining. With this model, the community feels they are part of the company and the social license of the company is guaranteed. Gold Fields? model, which has been tried and tested for the past five years, could serve as a template with suitable modification for local conditions for other mining countries where surface mines operate.

"Rockbursts continue to be a major contributor to mine accidents and cause of damage to mine excavations, particularly at great depth. The problem of rockbursts has also escalated in civil engineering tunnels driven at depth, due to high levels of in situ stress at such depths. Attempts have been made in the past to mitigate the impact of rockbursts, with rock support remaining the ultimate method for providing stability in rockbursting environments. However, records show that, on many occasions, conventional support elements such as rockbolts, wire mesh, shotcrete, and lacing fail to withstand severe rockburst events.Recently, a support method termed ‘sacrificial’ support was proposed as a potential additional method to prevent rockburst damage, based on observations made after rockburst events in a mine. The philosophy behind a sacrificial support system is that, under dynamic loading conditions, support in the form of a liner must fail; leaving behind, undamaged, what was previously supported rock mass. The sacrificial support concept reported herein is applicable in situations where the source (i.e. seismic event) of the rockburst is located remote from where rockburst damage is likely to occur.Spalling tests based on the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique were conducted to study some aspects of dynamic rock fracturing in tension at high strain rates and the role a sacrificial layer plays in combating dynamic rock failure. A single Hopkinson pressure bar, with a long cylindrical intact rock specimen attached at the bar free end, was impacted by a striker on the opposite free end in order to generate a dynamic stress pulse responsible for spall failure upon reflection from the specimen free end. Different liners and liner combinations were then introduced at the specimen free end as support. Such a simple, yet robust, experimental set-up allowed the potential benefits and failure mechanisms associated with sacrificial support under dynamic loading to be demonstrated and compared with ‘sacrificial support’ behaviour observed in real rockburst events in a mine. Analysis of the results revealed that varying liner thickness and mechanical impedance between rock and support liner play a significant role in limiting rockburst damage."

Approximately 850 groundwater samples were collected over a 29 300 km2 region of the semi-arid Northwestern Cape during the site selection phase of the South African radioactive waste disposal project. The purpose of the geostatistical investigation was primarily to delineate metallogenic occurrences and provinces which might exist below the thin veneer of surficial material and could thus interfere with the suitability of the site, and to quantify the distribution patterns of groundwater parameters in order to establish a relationship to local and regional geology. Up to 34 variables were analysed for each sample. Structural analysis revealed that the study area is statistically uniform. The variables have low correlation coefficients, with the exception of major ions, indicating a general poor degree of interrelationship between the spatial distribution patterns of the different variables. On the other hand, the long semivariogram range of the majority of variables, which reaches 70 km in cases, demonstrates their continuity on a regional scale. Kriging, which was repeated for each parameter, reveals that most variables, particularly trace metals, have distribution trends which are not influenced by local geomorphology or surface lithology. A 50 km wide, 220 km long metallogenic province, defined by kriging, could possibly reflect a broad metallogenic imprint on the basement and could represent a target area for prospecting. Kriging also reveals the possible existence of a wrench faulting system which may well have influenced the Namaqualand coastal graben and the western boundary of the Karoo.

Thirty-one years ago, African leaders met in Lagos for the drafting of the Lagos Plan of Action for the Economic Development of Africa, 1980?2000. The main objective of the plan was to increase Africa?s self-sufficiency and in this regard, the plan had a section pertaining specifically to redressing the ills of an unproductive mining and minerals industry and harnessing its potential for socio-economic development. However, if we look at the nature of this sector on the continent today, its characteristics resemble the diagnosis of the sector given in the plan back in 1980: lack of information on endowments of minerals; lack of value added in the sector; low development and use of those endowments that are not of interest to transnational corporations (TNCs); and most importantly, low contribution to socio-economic development. The primary consequence of the lack of visible benefits to African states, despite growth and development of the sector in terms of increased mining activity led by Foreign Direct Investment is that countries with mining industries are characterized by dysfunctional internal processes. Improvements in governance, monitored with indices such as those set out in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the Millennium Development Goals, and other such ?good governance? agendas, are being asserted. However, before we prescribe the introduction of initiatives or guidelines based upon highly subjective norms which we believe to fit this diagnosis, it is necessary to review how it is that we got to this situation that we are in today. How is it that, 31 years after the Lagos Plan of Action, we have not seen any major changes in the role the industry can play in socio-economic development, despite the vast increase in mining activity on the continent?
