Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) is an effective data-adaptive multimodal tool for monitoring chemical processes. However, monitoring multiscale signals using principal component analysis obtained from the multilevel decomposition of process signals using basic SSA assume the upper control limits of monitoring charts (" ) to have a Gaussian distribution. This assumption deteriorates the performance of basic SSA when applied to the monitoring of nonlinear processes. To address the issue in this paper, the kernel density estimation (KDE) was used to estimate upper control limits of monitoring charts for basic SSA based nonlinear process monitoring techniques. The monitoring performance of the resulting basic SSA-KDE approach was then compared with a basic SSA approach of which upper control limits of the monitoring charts were determined based on a Gaussian distribution. Application on nonlinear dynamic simulated process and base metal flotation plant chemical processes showed that the SSA-KDE approach provided better overall performance than the SSA approach with Gaussian assumption-based upper control limits for its monitoring charts. The rising tide of environmentalism has adversely affected many mineral producers, but it has also provided them with a number of opportunities for mineral applications. These markets are as diverse as water treatment, waste disposal, and flue-gas desulphurization. Whilst legislation is forcing up the industry's environmental standards, the advent of environmental management provides an opportunity for producers to display its 'green' credentials. The picture painted of the extractive industry by environmentalists is undeservedly black, because the more efficient a producer is, the more effectively that producer conserves the very resources he exploits. The 1993 IM Forum examined these issues and how they affect the mineral producer, and this publication comprises the papers presented at that meeting.

The concepts involved in flotation research are discussed and aims are presented. Three different methods of investigation can be used, all of which are applied at the National Institute for Metallurgy (N.I.M.), and these are the empirical, trial and error method, the chemical engineering method, and the physicochemical approaches. This paper is devoted to the last of these. Because of the complexity of the physicochemical interactions involved, the work has, to a large extent, been concentrated on only one aspect, viz. the interaction between the mineral surface and reagents in solution, which was considered of major importance in the understanding of the process. The aspects on which work has been done are the concentration of uranium, the reaction between salt minerals and fatty acids, mixed xanthate-cationic collector systems, and the reaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents. Selected problems from the first two of these are discussed in some detail and deal with the agglomeration flotation of uranium and the chemical control of the flotation process for phoscorite. A detailed discussion is also presented of the progress made in the understanding of the interaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents, which is of more general application. Finally, an indication is given of the future direction of physicochemical research at the N.I.M.

This paper discusses the possible use of petrological data and proximate analyses in the prediction of cutting forces for coal. It is restricted to the development of univariate predictors based on data from thirteen collieries in five major Transvaal and Orange Free State coalfields and three coal provinces. The aim of the work was the identification and development of the best predictors of mean peak cutting force and Hardgrove grindability index from among the independent variables evaluated. The data, which were obtained by use of the penetrometer developed by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, were processed according to the SPSS computer package. The analysis revealed reasonable correlations between the Hardgrove grindability index and (1) the volatiles and vitrinite content in the Vereeniging-Sasolburg and South Rand Coalfields, (2) the contents of vitrinite, vitrinite plus exinite, and minerals plus inertinite in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfield.

De Beers has four underground mines in Kimberley itself (Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers, and Wesselton), and two open-cast mines outside Kimberley (Finsch and Koffiefontein). Emphasis is placed on the new method envisaged for Koffiefontein when it becomes an underground mine. The paper also includes notes on chemical drilling and on winding practices.

The diamond-drilling machine has for many years been the most important exploration tool In the search for and subsequent evaluation of Witwatersrand-type ore deposits. With a view to increasing the range of services that can be provided and, at the same time, counteracting rising drilling costs, new techniques are continuously being developed. Many of these techniques have equal application in surface and in underground exploration. This paper reviews drilling techniques such as non-coring pilot holes and deep wire-line drilling, as well as the design of core-barrels and drilling bits to cater for the specific nature of the job on hand. Special drilling fluids and aluminium rods to assist in normal drilling operations are also discussed. Special mention is made of a bore hole's natural tendency to deviate in a certain direction. The factors that cause deviation are used to the advantage of controlled drilling techniques.

With a number of new mines at the feasibility stage and beyond and with several pellet capacity expansions well underway to reduce sintering activity, Alex Broad looks at the impact of worldwide environmental legislation on the iron ore industry. 'Environmental impact assessment' has become something of a buzz term in the metals and mining industry over the last few years and is sure to be an integral part of any green or brown-field project worldwide by the turn of the century, if it is not already. Given the number of iron ore projects springing up, most notably in deposit-blessed Australia, it is not surprising that the subject of environmental approval has been raising its green head. At the very least the process can slow down a new mine project, or at worst have it deemed unfeasible but in general a government is unlikely to put up unnecessary barriers to a project with the beneficial financial implications of an iron ore deposit.

The measures taken by Rand Carbide Limited from the 1950s to 1976 to control dust emission from the electric furnaces at its Witbank factory are described. A new design of furnace for calcium carbide followed by a dry-fabric filtration plant for the furnace gases was not successful in arresting the dust. A 131 m chimney commissioned in 1968 effectively dispersed the dust-laden gases from both carbide and ferrosilicon production and so brought considerable alleviation. In 1974 a bag-filter dust-collecting plant was successfully commissioned on a 6 MV.A carbide furnace, and this was followed in 1976 by a bag-filter plant on a 46,5 MV.A ferrosilicon furnace. The company has spent considerable effort and money over two decades in trying to combat dust emission, but eventual success had to await technological development.

Transition metals have been widely used in medicine throughout history. The medicinal use of metals extends back to the earliest recorded history when the Chinese used gold as treatment for a variety of ailments. The ancient Egyptians used copper to sterilize water and mercury was reportedly used by Hippocrates in 400BC. Thereafter, numerous other metals have been used as treatment throughout the centuries. For example, zinc sulphate was used as an emetic in the 17th century and zinc oxide was used to treat epilepsy in the 18th century. This use of metals, and numerous other instances, which have been well described in Sneader 2008,1 make for interesting reading but largely occurred prior to the advent of rigorous scientific method. Therefore, although there are exemptions, most therapeutic applications of metals prior to the modern age lack scientific grounding and have been found to be mostly ineffective. Of more relevance are metal-based medicines approved by regulatory bodies (i.e. Food and Drug Administration; FDA) that are in current use as therapeutic drugs. There are presently a large number of metal-based drugs that are approved for use by the FDA ranging from over the counter medicines, such as bismuth subsalicylate for gastrointestinal problems, to prescription drugs such as lithium carbonate for the treatment of manic depression. The list of metal-based medicines approved by the FDA not only incorporates base metals but also includes precious metals. Platinum complexes have been found to be potently active against several different types of cancers while gold complexes have shown application as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). With the well-established foundation that exists for metal-based medicines, it is imperative to continue exploration into new therapeutic areas. The precious metals; gold, ruthenium and platinum, continue to attract scientific interest in the field of biomedicine and have been widely researched. Scientific studies conducted on gold complexes have demonstrated the potential of this metal for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, cancer and malaria. These diseases are also specific health concerns for developing nations; countries where disease has devastating impact. Within South Africa alone, an estimated 5.7 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS,2 approximately 7 000 new cases of malaria are reported annually, and it is projected that 1 in 4 persons will develop cancer. Continuous development of therapeutic drugs to combat these diseases is therefore apriority, and the exploration of gold-based compounds for this purpose is warranted.

Understanding chemical interactions at solid-liquid interfaces have played a pivotal role in improving mineral flotation performance, increasing the rate of mineral crystallisation and profitable leaching of valued minerals and metals. This paper highlights gold leaching with links to surface and interfacial chemical processes occurring, and opportunities to maximise extraction while reducing usage of more recent scarce resources. From the review, there is a significant link between surface and interfacial processes and gold leaching performance. Evidently, gold leaching kinetics could be increased by changing leaching conditions, including manipulating the surface and interfacial interactions. Control of surface and interfaces during gold extraction could enhance rapid, smarter gold extraction and mitigate formation of passivation layers. The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should be of sufficient high standard and contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Their publication should be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to mining and industry. Authors must realize that because a mine shaft is new or the mine itself is newly established, this in itself does not justify a paper unless significantly new techniques or processes were involved in the opening-up procedure. A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of less well chosen material. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Papers should be submitted at least three months prior to the intended date of presentation. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of foolscap paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 11-inches, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Galley proofs are sent to the authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. Generally: Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unamiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parenthesis ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991 and proof correction symbols in British Standard 1219C. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. ft for foot and feet, lb for pound and pounds. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. Likewise ft and in. should be used, x' y" only being permissible in diagrams and plans. Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 6 in. wide. Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, II, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the margin of the typescript where drawings and diagrams, etc. are to appear in the text. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. SUMMARY ABSTRACT OR SYNOPSIS It is most important that the summary should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTESAND REFERENCES Footnotes should be resorted to only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus . . .1 . . . 2. Do not use the word Bibliography. Skorpion Zinc, an integrated zinc mine and refinery located in the south of Namibia, has a production capacity of 150 000 t/a of special high grade (SHG) zinc. The Skorpion zinc oxide resource will be depleted by 2017. Extensive exploration drilling for additional zinc oxides was conducted without success. With the abundant availability of zinc sulphide concentrates regionally (Black Mountain and Gamsberg in the Northern Cape or Rosh Pinah Zinc and new deposits in the Rosh Pinah region) the life of the operation can be extended by processing of zinc sulphide concentrates. The leach kinetics of zinc sulphides is vastly slower than for oxides, preventing the processing of zinc sulphides in the existing process under current conditions, and Skorpion Zinc faces the challenge to identify a suitable zinc sulphide treatment process that can be integrated with the existing plant. Various zinc sulphide processing options were identified through an extensive literature search and non-viable options were eliminated. Mass and energy balances were established for potential options and an economic evaluation (including capital and operating cost estimation) was conducted to identify a suitable process. It is concluded that ferric leaching of sphalerite in a sulphate medium under atmospheric or pressure leach conditions are suitable processes for Skorpion Zinc. These processes present advantages over all other zinc processing options when elemental sulphur is preferred as the final deportment for sulphide sulphur. Both these processes can be integrated into the existing refinery and will be able to process concentrates with a wide composition range.

SYNOPSIS The paper gives a detailed overview of the history of subsidence engineering on South African collieries. Surface displacements resulting from total-seam extraction are discussed, and the important role of local geology is highlighted. It is shown that the differences in subsidence behaviour between South African and European collieries can be attributed to the presence of competent strata in the overburden of South African coal seams. Criteria are given for the prediction of the most important subsidence parameters, and a new model for the simulation of surface subsidence above total-extraction panels is introduced. The final section of the paper deals with the damage to surface structures caused by total-seam extraction. A brief summary of the most important undermining experiments on South African collieries is given, and it is concluded that local experiences of damage compare with those in Europe.

Practical mining aspects should be considered when conducting pillar designs for bord-and-pillar layouts. The current methodology for pillar design will result in increasing pillar sizes with depth. This affects the extraction ratio and will result in onerous ventilation requirements when cutting large pillars. A holistic approach, including all mining engineering requirements, is required to ensure that the rock engineering designs are optimized to ensure efficient mining operations and sustainable production. Bord widths should not only be a function of the rock mass ratings, but should also be selected to fit the specifications of the mechanized equipment. The use of a ‘squat pillar’ formula for hard rock is discussed in the paper and the formula based on the exponents of the Hedley and Grant pillar formula, is explored. The effect of abutments and geological losses on average pillar stress is also explored. These factors must be considered when designing layouts at increasing depths.

The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 µm. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

Using a very large number of chip-sample values from a mined-out area of the Hartebeestfontein mine and accepting these as equivalent to borehole values (also areas of 1 km by 1 km as equivalent to &apos;mines&apos;), the authors apply a series of borehole-valuation procedures to these &apos;mines&apos;, Large undeveloped sections of existing mines are also regarded as the equivalent of such &apos;mines&apos;. These procedures start with the orthodox arithmetic mean and then introduce additional information in the form of the Iog normal frequency distribution model for Sichel&apos;s &apos;t&apos; estimator. Knowledge of the average log-variance within mines leads to the tH estimator. The mean grade of the &apos;family&apos; of mines to which a new mine belongs is then introduced via regression or elementary kriging. Next, further information on the macro spatial structure of the grade is used, together with the grades of adjacent existing mines in ordinary and simple macro-kriging procedures; finally, via the distribution model, the grade is seen as a function of the logs of the grades and their variances. These are introduced as spatial variables, and both are estimated by macro-Iog normal ordinary and simple kriging procedures with grades and variances from adjacent mines&apos;. Comparisons are also made between macro-kriging on lognormal transformed values versus untransformed values. Conclusions are drawn on the relative importance of the various items of additional information used, on the procedures followed, and on the significance of the advantages gained

Exploration, and other, boreholes are drilled to obtain information about the geological environment. Knowledge of the exact position (dip and direction) of the holes is important to ensure compatibility between the hole and the geological information. Kumba Resources traditionally used mechanical methods to determine the hole characteristics. These are cumbersome and expensive, and as a consequence a new method, the IVEC (Iscor Video Exploration Camera), was developed which utilizes a charged coupled device (CCD) image sensor focused on a three-dimensional compass. Utilisation of lower-grade (<60 per cent Fe) resources, not utilised in the current products, is crucial to ensure optimal resource utilisation and maintaining/improving future profit margins by reclassifying low-grade material to ore. The purpose of the Sishen Expansion Project (?SEP?) is therefore to investigate the technical and financial viability of producing up to an additional 10 Mtpa of new products at Sishen from material currently classified as low-grade materials. Jigging technology has progressed to a point where Sishen?s 50 to 60 per cent Fe run of mine (?ROM?) material, once considered as waste, can be beneficiated to produce a saleable 64 per cent Fe product. This has been confirmed through appropriate beneficiation testwork. Consequently, Sishen can now produce saleable product from material not currently included in the resource definition, increasing the resource base of the mine significantly and ensuring higher resource utilisation. Mine Planning utilised the geological models to produce detail planning schedules, reflecting the current and SEP plants separately, optimised to comply with product specifications of both the current and SEP plants and to confirm the viability of the low-grade resources identified as SEP feed material. The SEP products specifications have been derived by optimally matching iron ore market requirements with the revised resource base. A 64.0 per cent Fe lump product and a 63.5 per cent Fe fine product are the optimal SEP products. The SEP plant will be able to produce 10Mtpa at an average yield of 60 per cent and a lump to fine ratio of 62 to 38. The plant consists of five major sections namely crushing, material preparation, beneficiation, final product handling and quality control services. Maximum integration with the current Sishen plant was considered. Kumba currently has an agreement with Transnet to rail up to 23.5 Mtpa through the Sishen Saldanha Iron Ore Export Channel (?IOEC?). Transnet and Sishen Iron Ore Company have signed a Definitive Agreement that deals with the expansion of IOEC?s capacity, which increases Kumba?s entitlement from 23.5Mtpa to 35.0Mtpa. The detailed enviro-legal impact assessments for the SEP indicated that the project has low enviro-legal risk as a result of it being a brownfields project incorporated into the current Sishen operations.
