Ti-64, which accounts for more than 50% of the worldwide titanium tonnage, has found commercial importance in industries requiring components with high specific strength and resistance to corrosion. Investment casting is the preferred production method due to the difficult machinability of the alloy. This study was aimed at investigating the mechanism and the extent of alpha case formation on Ti-64 components cast using the investment casting method with YFSZ (yttria fully-stabilized zirconia) shell moulds after vacuum induction melting. The extent of the reaction between the mould hot face and the molten metal has been studied by varying parameters such as soaking temperature and mould hot face composition, and examining their effects on the reaction with the mould. An increase in the soaking temperature had an effect on the alpha case, both in appearance and hardness, but had no effect on contamination levels by carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. The depth of alpha case increased with soaking temperature, increasing from 35 µm to 161 µm with an increase in temperature from 1200°C to 1400°C. The micro-hardness profiles provided insight into the effect of the alpha case on the mechanical properties of the Ti-64 alloy by displaying hardness values of 1000 HV0.1 and above, but could not be solely utilized to determine the alpha case penetration depth due to microstructural differences in the unaffected Ti-64, in particular the martensitic microstructure that formed with a fast cooling rate from a higher temperature. Levels of expected contaminants such as Zr, Y, 0, and C were low. The addition of the colloidal zirconia binder affected the interfacial reactions. YFSZ proved to be a thermodynamically stable refractory material, with the alpha case possibly forming as a result of segregation.

The separation and beneficiation of low grade collophanite has long been a technical challenge in phosphorous production. It requires the joint efforts of process design, reagents optimisation and operational control. In this study, the statistical response surface method was applied for determining the optimum reagent dosing in the flocculate flotation of a low grade (18.59%) collophanite ore. The dosage of three reagents, including a pH regulator (Na2CO3), depressant (Na2SiO3) and flocculant (modified starch), were input parameters of the modelling design. Two quadratic mathematical models were derived for prediction of grade and recovery based on the statistical design. Statistical analysis of the experimental results validates the reliability of the models. Through further calculation, the optimum dosage of the three reagents were found to be 3,020g/t Na2CO3, 1,990g/t Na2SiO3 and 880g/t modified starch, with which a maximum recovery of 75.81% and P2O5 grade of 30.08% was obtained from flocculate flotation test. Generally, filter media used in filter presses have a limited operational life. Besides mechanical damage, there is a growing deposition of fine particles with increasing filtration cycles, the so-called blinding, inside the filter cloth. The resulting decreasing pore diameters not only affect the efficiency of the filtration process itself by increasing the filter medium resistance, but also make it more difficult to regenerate the filter press between the individual cycles, e.g. leading to an insufficient cake discharge. Since tailings filtration requires handling of large process flows containing a significant fraction of particles in the lower micrometer range, an investigation into media rejuvenation is of interest. The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. This precludes the user from having to deal in absolute delay times. The connecting system enables benches to be hooked-up speedily by multiple users who have differing levels of experience. This paper provides details of how, after 33 months, the system has been embraced by the project by aiding in maximised advances, improved cycle times and meeting the required environmental constraints.

A stepwise arrangement of flotation cells is the most common layout of a flotation circuit in the mineral processing industry. In such a design, slurry flows from upstream to downstream by means of gravity, and the middling products are returned to previous stages by pumps. This paper will introduce an alternative solution in which the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cells are adopted so that all the flotation cells can be placed on the same horizontal platform and no pumps will be needed for middling product transferring. The technology of the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cell will be described in detail, including unique features, the working principle and the related fundamental problems. The comparison of capital investment, operating cost and metallurgical performance will be made between the conventional stepwise arrangement and the samelevel arrangement technology based on industrial practice. The indirect estimation of intact rock properties is particularly useful for preliminary investigations in engineering projects. In this paper we examine the usability of electrical resistivity, a nondestructive measurement, for the prediction of physical and mechanical rock characteristics. Physico-mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, Brazilian tensile, density, and porosity tests) and electrical resistivity measurements were performed on specimens of 36 rock types. Before the resistivity tests, the specimens were completely saturated with saline solution. Evaluation of the test results showed that there are medium or strong correlations between resistivity and rock properties. There are also strong or stronger correlations between the two parameters for the rock classes. The regression equations developed were statistically tested, and their validity was confirmed. The results were also compared with previous studies. The conclusion is that electrical resistivity measurement can be used for reliably estimating physical and mechanical rock characteristics.

As part of an investigation of possible water-saving measures at Anglo American Platinum's Mogalakwena Mine in Limpopo, South Africa, a study was made of conditions on the wet beaches of two adjacent tailings dams, each serving a separate plant on the mine. For one of the dams, a special catamaran was designed and constructed to enable the full length of wet beaches to be accessed and sampled immediately after a layer of tailings had been deposited. For the other dam, the wet beach was accessed using conveyor belting and scaffold planks. The length of the beaches was 400 m on the first dam, and 200 m on the second, and each was sampled at 50 m intervals. The parameters reported in this paper, for both beaches, are: > Water content profiles along each beach from the surface to as deep as 2.5 m, at times ranging from 12 hours to 6 weeks from the end of deposition > Particle size distributions at the surface, down the full length of the beaches > Measurements of feed relative density, tonnage and volume, decant and drain flow volumes, as well as rainfall and evaporation for both dams. The surface water contents shortly after deposition have been used to establish the relative density of the settled, decanted tailings and its variation down the beach. This data, combined with the decant and drainage flows, is used to establish the calculated and actual water recoveries from both dams.

South African coal discards derived from feed coal for thermoprocesses pose human health and environmental problems and incur high disposal costs. These issues need to be resolved. Coal fines and a coal fines/ K2CO3 blend were combusted at 700°C in a laboratory rotary kiln to produce ashes containing metakaolinite (Al2O3.2SiO2) and illite/muscovite/orthoclase amorphous materials. The blend ash and coal fines ash, containing 18% K2O and <1% K2O respectively, were leached with water and with 1 M and 8 M NaOH at 80°C for 4 hours using a solid to liquid ratio of 1:5. The 8 M NaOH leach yielded 17% sodalite (Na8Si6Al6O24(OH)2) formation through SiO32-, Al(OH)4-, and Na+ precipitation in the leached ashes. The 1 M NaOH leach yielded no sodalite. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the original ashes and leached ashes showed low Al and Si dissolution efficiencies due to the sodalite formation. Sequential NaOH leaching resulted in the highest potassium dissolution efficiency of 89% for the ashes of fines/K2CO3 blend and 59% for the fines. It may be possible to increase the ash-derived zeolite concentration by using even higher NaOH concentrations (12–20 M NaOH) during leaching. Sodalite derived from coal ash could possibly be utilized for water purification in industrial applications, or as molecule separators. The potassium-containing liquid could be used in fertilizer manufacture.

Effective communication is a sought-after non-technical skill in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) function and is fundamental in achieving an organization’s safety objectives. While different channels are used to communicate HSE matters, many organizations employ posters, videos, and/ or signs containing images to convey information. Communication through signage and graphical hazard symbols has been regulated in standards, but vast sections of HSE communication are bespoke communications and exist outside the sphere of standards. Effective HSE communication through images requires an understanding of the organizational culture in which the images will be used, as well as an understanding of the semiotics of the images themselves. Creative interpretation within HSE communication can create situations where the message that was received is not the message that was intended, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper is aimed at elucidating the semiotics of South African HSE visual content. It was found that the indexical mode of images was most preferred in visual communication, and text-only designs the least preferred. Senders and receivers of messages differ in their opinions on the complexity of HSE communication.

The South African mining industry has committed to achieving a state of zero harm for its workforce, with a strong emphasis on worker health and safety. Among the major safety concerns are falls of ground, a leading cause of injuries and fatalities. Ground-penetrating radar, a non-destructive geophysical method, is recognised for its ability to image structures, fractures, and geological features within the rock mass. However, ground penetrating radar data is often acquired in local coordinates, posing challenges for visualisation in mine computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. This study explores the pivotal role of light detection and ranging data in transforming ground penetrating radar data from local survey coordinates to absolute mine coordinates. A comprehensive georeferencing methodology is presented, providing the stepwise progression from the initial georeferencing of ground penetrating radar data to the ultimate integration of ground penetrating radar and light detection and ranging datasets, resulting in the creation of a ground penetrating radar-light detection and ranging three-dimensional model. The proposed approach not only facilitates the integration of but also offers a practical means of visualising the integrated datasets within commonly used computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. An essential aspect of this integration is the adoption of non-proprietary data formats, specifically American Standard Code for Information Interchange text files, ensuring broader accessibility and compatibility. The potential for integrating diverse datasets to construct insightful models of the underground mining environment is illustrated. Integration of different datasets has the potential to offer a holistic understanding of the mining environment, providing essential information to decision-makers.

In almost all branches of industry, machinery and equipment in operation cause vibration. Some sources of vibration affect only the operator’s hands, fingers, and arms, while others have adverse effects on the entire -body. Various types and numbers of machines are utilized in the mining sector, and operators with them are exposed to mechanical vibrations caused by the mining machinery they use. A field study was conducted to evaluate the vibration risks to the operators using mining machines in open pit mines. Vibration levels and whole-body vibration (WBV) measurements using various types brands, and models of construction equipment were evaluated in three different mines in the west of Turkey and compared to the the criteria specified in the EU 2002/44/EC directive and ISO 2631-1 (1997) standards. The results showed that operators using mining machinery for 8 hours were exposed to WBV levels below the EU limit (1.15 m/s2), while 44% of these operators were exposed to levels above the EU action limit (0.5 m/s2). Measurement data collected from the working environment and the recommended improvements that need to be made to reduce WBV exposures are presented.

This paper identifies the strategic gaps and opportunities for the South African mining industry’s contribution towards advancing sustainable development. Mineral resources companies are confronted by a range of complex social performance challenges, which largely manifest in sporadic community and labour unrest, undermining the sustainability and profitability of these companies. Integrating supply chain management, strategic long-term planning and sustainability planning is identified as a strategic gap that can contribute towards the sustainability of mining companies, if effectively implemented. Contributing towards sustainable development by the South African mining industry is not merely a voluntary requirement on the industry but a legal requirement in terms of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002. This Act is legislation aimed at advancing socioeconomic development in communities that host mining operations and in areas that provide labour to the South African mining industry. In contributing towards the advancement of sustainable development in mining host communities, not only will mining companies fulfil a legal requirement in terms of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act, but they will also prevent negative social and economic impacts in those communities. This paper identifies innovative and cost-effective ways of advancing sustainable development by integrating strategic supply chain management, strategic long-term planning, and sustainability planning.

"As part of the planning system at each division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, the Mine Planning Department is required to produce a detailed production schedule for each shaft.Because of the difficulties in producing a schedule which satisfies all the mining constraints, and because of the large clerical effort involved, the full range of possible schedules can never be considered.It has been found possible to produce a schedule using linear programming which satisfies the majority of the many varied mining constraints. Computer programs have been written to enable the mine planning department to use this mathematical system without assistance.The system has a large degree of flexibility to enable the planner to include conditions which cannot be incorporated readily in the linear program. This system permits the more efficient production and evaluation of schedules and reduces the amount of clerical effort."

Massive deposits of rock salt are mined in the Salt Range area of Pakistan. The main export products of rock salt include salt lamps, blocks, and tiles, while local consumption includes the chemical industry and domestic use. The profitable production of salt for value addition depends on the quality, size, and shape of the block. Salt processing for value addition is easier when very few cracks are present in the blocks. The current salt mining practice involves drilling and blasting, which introduces undesired fractures in the material. This paper focuses on the extraction of rock salt blocks by applying conventional cuboidshaped block mining methods used in quarries. The techniques include wedges and feathers, expansion chemicals, and blasting with low-yield explosives. Experimental work involved both laboratory-scale and in-situ field testing. Laboratory experiments assisted with the determination of splitting force, loaddeformation curves, and other rock mechanics parameters. Regression analysis proposes a relationship for the estimation of radial strain from the load in the case of the wedges and feathers method. The splitting force obtained from the laboratory tests was used to confirm the accuracy of the already published empirical relationship. The results of the laboratory as well as in-situ tests showed that the wedges and feathers technique is the most suitable method for mining rock salt blocks of the desired size, shape, while minimizing cracking.

Tower mill is considered to have a better regrinding and fine grinding effect compared with ball mill, and its application is much broader. The spiral agitator of the tower mill is driven by the motor. Media inside the mill is under the combined actions of the spiral mechanism, the cylinder, and media nearby, and these parameters are key factors affecting the grinding effect. However, it is not possible to obtain detailed information of kinematic law of media based only on traditional laboratory experiments, let alone the relationship between parameters of kinematic law of media and grinding effect. Experimentation is the only way to develop industrial equipment. However, this is time-consuming and costly, which hampers the further research of the tower mill’s grinding mechanism. The paper selects two structural parameters (gap between the edge of the spiral agitator and the cylinder wall, ratio between the diameter of cylinder and that of the spiral shaft.) and three operating parameters (diameter of media, filling ratio, the speed at the edge of the spiral agitator) as variables to do an orthogonal designed experiment of five factors, four levels, and thereby obtaining change law of grinding indicators of different parameters. Experimental equipment may be simplified to enable an applicable simulation strategy. Simulation based on a discrete element method is conducted to obtain the change law of the speed of media, collision frequency, normal force, and radial force. The relational curve between parameters of kinematic law of media and energy consumption of grinding is clarified, and key factors affecting grinding efficiency are determined. Those factors will be used for optimising the design and operating process. The research result of this paper obtained from laboratory experiments and computer simulation provides data support and theoretical bases, and has directive meaning and applicable value for tower mill’s optimisation and large-sized design. The last-mentioned company, being South Africa&apos;s largest producer, is dealt with in greatest detail.

"A model of the flotation process can be used effectively for design and control. For design purposes it can be used to predict the performance of a large plant from laboratory and pilot plant data. It can be used for control purposes to assess the utility of any proposed operating modification to an existing plant, and it can also be used to determine optimal control settings for best operating performance.A model has been developed that will allow for variations in feed properties and for variations in fineness of grind. The model can be used to assess the effects of reagent addition rate, aeration rate and pulp level on plant performance and these are the control variables that are used individually or together in all operating flotation plants. The model provides for a distribution in the values for flotation rate constants, particle size and mineral fraction, and, because of its complexity, requires a large computer when it is to be applied to a typical plant configuration. The computational method that is used to apply this model to such configurations is described in this paper, and particular attention is paid to the problem of allowing for feedback of tailings from cleaners and recleaners."

Deep level hardrock mining faces increasing challenges from elevated in situ stresses and associated rockbursts. This study aims to develop a systematic framework for evaluating destress blasting effectiveness, with a focus on deep Swedish hardrock mines. The methodology integrates a critical review and adaptation of global best practices: advanced numerical modelling (static and dynamic simulations), field-based rock fracture monitoring using ground penetrating radar and borehole imaging, and application of rockburst prediction criteria including the strain energy storage coefficient (F), brittle shear ratio, and burst potential index. Geostatistical simulations, machine learning models, and industrial internet of things-based, real-time monitoring are proposed to enhance predictive accuracy, model calibration, and operational adaptability. Key findings show that effective destress blasting evaluation requires multi-modal integration of numerical outputs, field observations, microseismic trends, and uncertainty quantification, accounting for site-specific geological variability and dynamic stress redistribution. The study advances the field by proposing a predictive, feedback-driven evaluation framework tailored for deep Swedish mining conditions, capable of improving proactive rockburst risk management. It offers both practical tools for mining practitioners to optimise stress management, reduce seismic hazards, and enhance excavation safety, and academic foundations for future refinement of destress blasting models, geotechnical monitoring strategies, and adaptive design protocols. This research contributes to safer, more efficient deep mining operations by bridging gaps between theoretical modelling, empirical monitoring, and real-time, data-driven blast design optimisation strategies.

Robotic subsea dredging crawlers are dynamically and remotely controlled vehicles that are used for deep sea mining and recovery operations. These exploration machines are released from a mother ship and move around on the ocean floor using tracks. Current ocean crawlers such as the MK3 ROST are hydraulically powered. In this paper we develop a scaled-down model for simulating and performing static loading analysis of an electrically powered robotic subsea dredging crawler (EPRSDC). The modeling, simulation, and analysis were carried out using modelling software from Solidworks. The structural frame was assembled using the Tetrix max robotics kit. The kit’s structural components were produced from 1050 aircraft-grade aluminum. The results were used in optimizing and for considering other materials, and the to identify specific areas to be reinforced in future crawler designs.

Spiral concentrators are widely used in the coal industry treating fine (-1mm) coal. Their application was a limitation to the product quality until the introduction of low-cut spirals which allow a lower quality ash product to be produced, thus expanding the market. The Exxaro Grootegeluk 1 (GG1) plant has a two-stage traditional rougher-cleaner spiral circuit using conventional SX4 spirals to produce semi-soft coking coal product at 12.5% ash by mass. The overall plant product is 10.3% ash meaning that the coarser sized coal dense medium separation circuits must compensate. A low density cut-point spiral targetting 10.3% ash would thus be beneficial to the overall complex. The spirals were tested in the two-stage plant environment and in a pilot plant. This paper discusses the findings and compares a two stage four-turn low density cut and conventional spiral. The two spiral technologies were unable to sustain a 10.3% ash product. Pilot test work was also conducted on GG1 coal, demonstrating that an eight-turn low density cut-point spiral achieves the targetted 10.3% ash under controlled conditions.
