"Introduction In the course of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines into the various causes of coal-mine explosions, the fact that several gas explosions had occurred during or very soon after a mine was being un-watered, attracted the attention of the Bureau's engineers. The apparent coincidence was so marked that there appears to be an extra hazard present, whenever water, which has been standing against the face of the coal for some time, is suddenly removed either by natural drainage or by mechanical means.Actual Occurrences Case 1. - A typical illustration of this hazard is shown in a gas explosion which occurred in a mine in Central Pennsylvania. Four main entries, 50 feet apart with an average grade of 6 per cent, had been driven with the dip of the coal, and from these mains 7 pairs of entries, at intervals of 800 feet, had been turned at such an angle that their grade was slightly rising. Prom these latter pairs of entries, rooms were turned practically at right angles.The main entries had been driven for 4,500 feet and at the face there was 400 feet of cover. As far as could be observed, the roof was of sandstone and the floor of clay.The coal bed being mined was the Lower Kittanning, which has a thickness of about 4 feet. Eliminate the occurrence of false fire detection alarms caused by the operation of diesel-powered vehicles in underground coal mines. Approach Fire detection systems used in underground mines are based on measurements of airborne combustion products such as carbon monoxide or smoke particles. The effectiveness and credibility of these systems can be reduced by the occurrence of false alarms that result from the operation of diesel-powered equipment, which produces the same combustion products. False alarms end up being very costly to the mine operation in terms of downtime and labor needed for verification. To improve upon current fire detection systems used in the presence of internal combustion engine products, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a fire detector that can discriminate between the occurrence of real mine fires and the presence of engine smoke.

Are you afraid of the dark? Of course not, at least not since you were about six years old, anyway. But early man was - afraid of the dark, and he had good reason to be. Since he had no illumination other than fire and moonlight, he was at a disadvantage when it came to mixing it up with some of his fellow creatures. Sabre-toothed tigers, for example, could probably see quite well In the dark, and they were very real enemies. Sabre-toothed tigers haven't been seen in mining country for some time now; but it's st111 dark In a mine and, make no mistake about it, there are still enemies in the dark. The enemies are all the things that can injure you if they are not seen. Modern mines can be safe places to work for the trained miner who follows good work practices. But there are mining machines that make sabre- toothed tigers look like pussycats, and if you can't see well enough they can be ten times more dangerous.

A generalized flow diagram is presented in Figure 1, which shows the relationship of major model functions. This chart does not necessarily represent the anatomy of the computer program, but is designed to illustrate the informational interchange between major model functions. The related flow-charts-and computer program are listed in Parts I and II, Appendix A, respectively. Mine Car Stations The mine car stations are the activity centers for the model. The locomotive logic structure is designed to provide these stations with adequate cars and to clear them of car buildup. The model is designed to simulate a three stage haulage situation which suggests the need to differentiate station levels by type numbers. These are: a) TYPE 1 stations - mine cars are loaded here; b) TYPE 2 stations - intermediate stop and storage for mine cars; c) TYPE 3 stations - all mine cars that are stored here leave mine; and d) TYPE 4 stations - mine portal. TYPES 1, 2, and 3 have all loaded cars assigned to an ascending TYPE as their next destination. In input, if single stage haulage is designated, TYPES 1 and 3 do not exist, and if two stage haulage is called for, TYPES 2 and 3 are absent. In cooperation with Cyprus Twentymile Coal Co., researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, conducted a study at the Foidel Creek Mine, an underground coal mine near Oak Creek, CO, to evaluate the stability of underground working conditions as a longwall advanced through a series of backfilled cross-panel entries. Instruments installed in the cross-panel entry pillars, backfill, longwall panel, and adjacent headgate entry were continuously monitored by a computerized data acquisition system as the longwall approached and advanced through the backfilled section of the panel. Data collected from these instruments were analyzed to determine the magnitude and direction of the secondary principal stress changes ahead of the longwall face, deformation and closure of the headgate entry, and stability of the cross-panel entry pillars and backfill. A three-dimensional, boundary element model was calibrated to accurately predict mining-induced stress changes and the distance they occurred ahead of the longwall face. As the longwall advanced through the backfilled entries, most of the mining-induced load was supported by the cross-panel entry pillars. The backfill provided stability for the roof and floor of the in-panel entries and also confined the entry pillars significantly improving their load-carrying capacity. Comprehensive information derived from backfill material property tests, instrument data, underground observations, and numeric modeling results document the safety and stability of the 8-Right mine through and should provide beneficial case study information for other longwall backfilling applications in the future.

Crude petroleum, the only commercially exploited mineral resource in Cameroon, continued to dominate developments in the mineral industry sector. International mining concerns have expressed interest in developing Cameroon's bauxite and iron and steel potentials. Domestically, the mineral industry focused on production of fertilisers for agricultural development, infrastructure construction, and hydrocarbon development, through the nearly self-sufficient production of fertilizer materials, cement, and crude oil. The mineral sector contributed 5.6% to the estimated 1981 gross domestic product (GDP) of $6.5 billion.2 Petroleum exports accounted for approximately 4.5% of the 1981 GDP and exceeded coffee and cocoa exports for the second consecutive year. The trade gap widened during the fiscal year ending on July 80, 1981, owing to a 21% increase in exports and a 25% increase in imports. Offsetting these balance-of-payments difficulties, typical of developing countries' early economic stages, were increases in foreign exchange reserves to $71 trillion by May 1983.

Application of Proposed Revised Standards 57.11-50 to Mines Surveyed 3.1 Subparagraph (a) 1 "Each mine shall have at least two separate and properly maintained escapeways from each working place to the surface which are so positioned that physical or environmental damage to one will not lessen the effective¬ness of the other, and which meet the requirements of travelways and man hoisting standards These escape¬ways shall reach to within 1000 feet horizontally or 300 feet vertically of each working place " 3. 1. 1 Discussion This section will deal with the 1000 and 300 feet distance requirements, Section 3. 5 will deal with the "environmental damage" provisions. During the course of the mine surveys, it became obvious that one mine's 1000 foot distance was nowhere near equal to another' s --not in the actual distance but in the time required to traverse that distance. This -Ls true for the 300-foot requirement as well. The most obvious example is that one could traverse down a 300-foot raise much faster than climbing up the same distance. The temptation is strong to recommend that the distance requirement be changed to travel times instead. However, this approach would unfortunately lead to a lot of subjective evaluations. Having a time requirement for an entire mine evacuation (Subparagraph 6) is one thing, time requirements and the requisite inspection proce¬dures for each working place are quite another.

Provide mine safety personnel, MSHA inspectors, and original-equipment manufacturers with guidelines and a check list for inspecting rollover protection structures (ROPS) being used in mining operations. The Problem ROPS are provided on mobile surface mining equipment to protect operators from such safety hazards as machine rollovers, falling objects, and collisions. However, the protective capability of a ROPS can be greatly reduced if it is damaged. Certain kinds of damage, such as hair- line cracks, corrosion, and loosened bolts, may occur as a result of normal machine use but may not be recognized as unsafe by untrained personnel. Therefore, the Bureau of Mmes designed a manual which can be used by mine personnel when inspecting ROPS equipment. The Manual The manual was prepared to help acquaint mine safety personnel and MSHA inspectors with typical ROPS deficiencies and their causes. It provides a systematic means for inspecting ROPS so that the identified deficiencies and their causes can be corrected. It is suggested that an inspection of the ROPS be conducted after every 1,000 h of equipment operation, or sooner if the structure has been subjected to any unusual loads which could cause damage, such as a rollover, highwall caving, or collision. The manual also details common deficiencies in the structure and attachment hardware which may affect the service life. The checklist, when used as instructed in the manual, provides a means for systematically inspecting the structure to ensure maximum protective capability and conformance with applicable Federal regulations.

During the past 10 years the Bureau of Mines has had a broad experience in the tasting and inspection of electric motors for gaol-cutting machines, cowl drills, storage-battery locomotives and other equipment Which is used in mines where explosive mixtures of methane and air may be encountered. From this experience the Bureau's engineers have reached the conclusion that the most satisfactory method of protecting a motor so as to prevent any sparks resulting from rough commutator, loose contacts or short-circuits in it, from igniting he surrounding atmosphere, is to totally inclose the motor with a substantial casing; having flanged joints. These joints should be metal-to-metal contact so that the shortest path from the interior to the exterior Of the casing is not less than one inch in length. On account of this experience with mining machinery, the Bureau has been asked whether an equal or loss degree of protection would be sufficient for motors for service in or about places such as refineries, gasoline filling stations, cleaning establishments and pumping stations, or in any place where there is liklihood of explosive mixtures of gasoline or naphtha vapors and air accumulating.

Cement kiln dust (CKD) is a waste product generated at the rate of 4 to 12 million tons per year in the United States. The dust has considerable resource potential as a neutralizer for coal mine waste effluents and as a lime substitute in the agriculture and construction industries. However, little information has been published on the composition and characteristics of CKD, and a concern arose over the potential environmental effects of the waste when an analysis of a single sample from West Germany revealed lead and zinc concentrations of 5,620 µg/g and 16,200 µg/g, respectively. Reduce the airborne dust generated in a longwall coal face. Approach Reduce the rotational speed and increase the depth-of-cut of the longwall shearer. How It Works An Anderson-Mavor AM500 double-ended ranging drum shearer was fitted with drums specially designed to accept the large picks required for this testing program. Change gears In the shearer allowed rotational speeds of the drums to be set at 35, 45, 55, or 70 rpm. As deep cutting removes larger coal fragments, the specific energy requirements of the operation are reduced and less surface area results. Dust generation and shearer power consumption are also reduced. The lower rotational speed minimizes the fanning action of the cutterheads and thus reduces the amount of coal fines that become airborne.

Principal mineral products in the Dominion of Fiji were gold, silver, pit and quarry construction materials, and cement. In 1981, the combined value of these commodities accounted for about $11.6 million,2 over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products increased substantially above the 1980 level. Mining bated on gold production was decreasing, and employment in the industry was declining. The better grade deposits in the one active mine were worked out, and only another 10 years' production at current rates was estimated to remain. While the high world gold price of 1979-80 led to intensive exploration, there has been little sum.

The standard heats of formation (?Hf°) of holmium trichloride and terbium trichloride were measured by solution calorimetry. Heats of solution of holmium and terbium metals and their anhydrous chlorides were measured in 4.360 molal HCI at 298.15° K. From these measurements ?Hf° for HoC13 (c) was calculated as -240,290 ±1,700 cal/mo1e, and ?Hf° for TbC13 (c) was calculated as -238,330 ±1,500 cal/mole at 298.15° K.

Surface areas of two synthetic and three natural consolidated porous samples were obtained by the Orr low-pressure permeametry technique. The results suggest that the Orr technique is a useful substitute for the low-temperature gas adsorption (BET) method for determining the surface area of rock samples. It was more rapid than the BET method, and the surface-area values obtained were larger but agreed better with BET values than values calculated from the Kozeny-Carman equation. Efforts were unsuccessful to demonstrate the influence of channel-size distribution on pressure-flow rate curves by means of experimental data and a parallel channel model.

Fire experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, with coal, diesel-fuel, electrical-cable, conveyor-belt, and metal-cutting fire sources to determine the response of fire sensors to products-of-combustion (POC). Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and smoke fire sensors demonstrated an earlier fire detection capability than a CO sensor. This capability was of particular significance for a conveyor-belt fire in which the optical visibility was reduced to 1.52 m with an increase in CO of less than 2 ppm at a distance of 148 m from the fire. Application of a neural-network program to the sensor responses from each type of fire source resulted in correct classifications of coal, diesel-fuel, cable, belt, and metal-cutting combustion with a mean of 96% of the test data correctly classified.

Apparatus developed by the Bureau of Mines for thermal analysis of oil shale was used to determine the thermal properties of shortite. Dissociation of shortite near 470° C occurs as an endothermic reaction that could consume significant quantities of heat in the oil-shale retorting process that produces shale oil. The shortite dissociation products undergo other thermal reactions that would not affect the retorting process. These reactions include crystal inversions near 365° C and 425° C and melting and decomposition endotherms above 500° C. Two separate reaction route for fusion and decomposition of the shortite decomposition products are dictated by the presence or absence of CO2 around the sample.

QUARTZ CRYSTAL Cultured quartz crystal production increased significantly in 198?, following 2 years of reduced production. Consumption of domestic lascas as feedstock for cultured quartz crystal increased. Imports of lascas from Brazil also increased. Although no lascas was mined in the United States during the year, the domestic producer supplied material to consumers from company stockpiles. Specimen-quality natural quartz was very much in demand; quartz crystal for this application is discussed in the Gem Stone chapter.

The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. The variables to be measured were based on the postulated character¬istics of the loading function, as described in the previous chapter. One class of variables presumed to influence the loading function are geological variables. Accordingly, the sites for data collection were selected in different bituminous coal seams at dispersed locations in order that variation in geological conditions would exist. Seven mines in central and western Pennsylvania and one mine in northern West Virginia were selected as data collection sites. Five different coal seams were represented by these mines. The remaining classes of variables - geometric, mechanical, and procedural - were measured as they occurred in the mines. A description of the measurements, and the conversion of these measurements to forms which could be-analyzed for effect on the loading function is given. Mining Dimensions At the underground working face, the following dimensions were measured: a. Thickness of coal excavated. b. Thickness of shale excavated. c. Total height excavated. d. Width excavated. e. Depth of penetration of each machine cut. With the exception of the last of these dimensions, all were measured

Maintain good blowing face ventilation while taking deeper cuts with a radio-remote, scrubber-equipped miner. Approach A six week in-mine study of face ventilation effectiveness was made by comparing the existing MSHA-approved blowing curtain setback distance of 25 ft with brattice set back distances of up to 50 ft. Effectiveness was determined by measuring methane levels at the face and in the immediate return. How It Works Blowing ventilation systems are commonly used in mines because the high velocity air stream created by these systems rapidly mixes with and dissipates methane generated during the cutting of coal. A drawback to blowing ventilation is that the work area is placed in return air and this may create dust compliance problems for the shuttle car and mining machine operator. To clean dust from the return a number of mining machine manufacturers supply dust scrubbers built into the machine. Dust-laden air is drawn into ducting at the front of the mining machine's boom and is ducted to a scrubbing unit located on the machine's main frame. The clean air from the scrubber is discharged as a high velocity jet toward the return, generally from the left fender of the mining machine. When taking cuts deeper than 20 to 25 ft with a scrubber-equipped machine, the machine's discharge is in by the mouth of the blowing curtain, creating a concern by mine workers that a loss of air to the face could result. However, Bureau of Mines research found that the push or throw of air toward the return by the scrubber discharge jet allows good face ventilation to be maintained with extended curtain setbacks.
