Electrical resistivities for various coal ashes in air and in a nitrogen atmosphere are given over the range 100° to 1,500° F. Resistivity of low-carbon ash in air is very high at low temperature, rises to a maximum at about 250° F, decreases very rapidly with increasing temperature to about 800° F, then decreases gradually to approach an asymptote at 1,500° F. Resistivity of high-carbon ash in air follows this same general trend at values which are much lower and are proportional to the carbon content. After the carbon has been burned off, resistivity of the remaining ash approaches the high values corresponding to low-carbon ash of similar chemistry. Two factorial experiments show the effects of temperature, particle size, chemical content, and compressibility on the resistivities of four fly ashes of widely different chemical composition in the temperature range proposed for coal-fired turbines. Resistivities of all low-carbon ashes tested fall in the range 106 to 107 ohm cm at 1,500° F and should be removable by electrostatic precipitators. Ashes containing carbon in excess of about 8 percent, however, have low resistivity (as determined in nitrogen), especially at high temperatures. Therefore, high-carbon materials may not be collectable in precipitators because the resistivity is below the minimum value necessary for precipitation. Consequently, high carbon residues from partial combustion of coal probably could not be removed effectively at high temperatures.

Uranium metal was electrowon from uranium dioxide dissolved in fluoride melts . The UO₂ was fed directly to the cell in a continuous manner . Electrolysis was performed at 1 , 200 ° to 1,300 ° C in electrolytes composed of UF4 , LiF , and BaFa . A single regulus of metal was collected in a confined area of the crucible . Product purity of 99.8 percent was attained . Carbon was the major contaminant . Compartmented cells were studied as a means of confining the oxide feed to the vicinity of the anodes .

Low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies for syn¬thetic Cu2S and CuS were measured. This investigation is part of the Bureau of Mines goals to provide thermodynamic data essential to the more efficient processing of copper ores, and thereby minimize the current dislocations in energy, environment, and mineral supply. Heat capacities were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter from 5 to 310 K, and resulted in S°298 = 27.76 for Cu2S(c) and S°298 = 16.05 cal/deg mole for CuS(c). Low-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, -(G°-Ho°)/T, and H°-Ho°. Enthalpies were measured with a copper block calorimeter from 298.15 to 1,600 K for Cu2S(c,1) and 298.15 to 780 K for CuS(c). The thermal behavior of CuS showed no transitions or other significant anomalies for the low- or high-temperature investigations. Cu2S showed reversible transitions at 376 K with an isothermal heat absorption of 0.865 kcal/mole, 720 K with an isothermal absorption of 0.280 kcal/mole, and approximately 1,400 K (congruent melting point) with a heat of fusion of 3.070 kcal/mole. High-temperature data are tabulated for H°-H°298, Cp°, S°, and -(G°-H°298)/T. Enthalpies are also expressed in equation form. The low¬and high-temperature data were combined with data from the literature to cal¬culate and tabulate ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf as a function of temperature.

A two-dimensional plane strain analysis by the stiffness matrix method was used to analyze two basic pit slope configurations. The magnitudes and the directions of stresses are given for a V-shape and for a flat-bottom pit with the slope angle varying from 30° to 90° at 10° intervals, Stress effects due to irregular pit configuration or to in-situ forces are discussed. Equations of similitude for gravity loading are given. Expressions are also given for the stresses at the toe as a function of slope angle. Procedures are given for finding the stresses in any geometrically similar pit slope of different dimensions and material properties from the stresses and equations presented in this report. Numerical results show that the V-shape pit slopes have lower stresses than the flat-bottom pit slopes; hence, they are inferred to be more stable.

1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee coal bed is the most important bed in Grundy County arid is the only bed that has had any sustained production. There is no production, at the present time, from any of the other coal beds in the county. The Richland (Lower Sewanee or Coke Oven) coal bed has been prospected but has never been developed extensively. The Angel coal bed has been worked to a very small extent near Beersheba Springs, Tenn., for local consumption. The Battle Creek coal bed has been worked sporadically near Monteagle, Tenn. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewaneee coal bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 15 millon short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 10 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This report describes work by the Bureau of Mines on the vacuum distilla¬tion of some of the more volatile metals such as cadmium, zinc, and magnesium from lead and tin. Evacuation within a distillation apparatus allows rapid diffusion of vapor away from the evaporation surface and prevents reaction of the vapor with residual gases. A reduction of pressure to several tenths of a millimeter makes possible practicable distillation rates, at temperatures for which the partial pressure of the metal vapor exceeds 10-3 atmosphere. The rate and selectivity of distillation depend primarily on the volatility and molal ratios of the alloy metals, and their chemical activity to each other. For very rapid evaporation or low concentration of the more volatile constituent, the rate is determined by the rate of diffusion of the evaporating metal, to the surface of the melt. Cadmium, zinc, magnesium, and tellurium were found to volatilize readily from both lead and tin. Tellurium appears to volatilize as an intermetallic compound rather than the pure metal. Antimony could not be removed from lead at 1,000° C.; the condensate was nearly all lead. Antimony, bismuth, and lead were removed from tin.

FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays or analyses for individuals or firms unless the samples are part of the ore-testing and ore-dressing investigations of the Metallurgical Division on representative ores from mining districts and of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry through published reports. All significant results obtained in this way are made public. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be examined.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Pittsburgh coalbed was studied in Washington and Green Counties, Pa., and in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Va., where this coalbed is now being mined at its greatest depth. The coalbed thickness appeared to be structurally controlled; the bed was generally thinner near the axes of anticlines and thicker near the axes of synclines. The overburden isopach shows a similar relationship. Most of the clay veins in coal occur in the synclinal troughs, generally under sandstone roof. Cleat orientations measured in 18 underground mines showed that face cleats are perpendicular to the axial trends of the folds, and the butt cleats are parallel to the axial trends, indicating structural control of the cleat. Measurement and analysis of surface joint orientations provide a method for predicting the cleat orientations of the coalbed, but linears measured from infrared photographs and photoindex sheets helped only to determine regional trends. The results of these investigations provide a geologic framework for rational planning for underground mine development to use the best available technology to cope with methane emissions, coalbed discontinuities, and related ground support problems.

The Bureau of Mines 8-liter flammability system was used to study the effectiveness of a variety of powdered inhibitors in preventing the propagation of explosions of coal dust or methane in air. Over 35 different chemical additives were evaluated against Pittsburgh seam pulverized coal. The least effective inhibitors were the carbonates, which required mass additions in the range of two to three parts inhibitor to one part of coal dust in order to prevent propagation. The most effective inhibitors were the derivatives of ammonium phosphate, which were effective quenching agents at additions of only one part inhibitor to four parts of coal dust. Alkali halide powders were of intermediate effectiveness. These laboratory-scale results are in good agreement with full-scale mine experiments in all cases where detailed comparisons have been made. Data were also obtained for the effectiveness of several of the same powdered inhibitors against methane-air explosions. Their relative order of effectiveness and the concentration ranges required for quenching the gas explosion are comparable to those measured for coal dust explosions. Data are also presented for the effectiveness of N2 and CF3Br addition. Some preliminary data are also presented for powder addition to methane burner flames. Those data are compared with other burner data and evaluated in terms of their relevance to explosion tests.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on tunnel-driving methods. The practices described are those used at No. 11 mine of the Colony Coal Co., Denver, Colo. No. 11 Mine is situated at Dines, some 14 miles north of Rook Springs, in Sweetwater County, Wyo. It is served by a spur off the Winton branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Colony Coal Co.'s mines were opened in 1918, and since that time have been among the largest producers of coal for the railroad and domestic markets in the Rock Springs coal district.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy that will facilitate the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the second of a series3/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant sys tans. These calculations had as their objective evaluation of the constant pressure flame temperatures of methane-air and propane-air flames at atmospheric pressure as functions of the mixture ratio and inlet temperature of the fuel-air stream.

The Bureau of Mines studied the problems caused by airborne contaminants from welding exhaust in surface mining operations and investigated equipment designed to reduce existing hazards. Four commercially available welding-fume exhaust units were tested to determine their effectiveness. Results indicated that the four units had the capability of controlling airborne particulate concentrations and bringing them to within allowable exposure limits.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, as part of its mission to effect pollution abatement, conducted research to devise means for disposing of phosphatic clay wastes and reclaiming mined land. Part of the investigation was performed in a cooperative research project with 10 phosphate companies in Florida. The colloidal properties of the phosphatic clay suspensions, called slimes, make them difficult to dewater and dispose of without impoundment storage aboveground. Various reagents to flocculate and dewater these plant wastes were evaluated, and a polyethylene oxide polymer was found to function in a specialized flocculation dewatering technique. The flocculation dewatering method was investigated in bench-scale batch tests and applied in continuous dewatering tests using standard mineral-processing equipment. In continuous tests at feed rates of up to 58 liters per minute, wastes at 4 percent solids were dewatered to about 20 percent solids. About 0.8 kilogram of polymer was used for each metric ton of dry waste clay solids; processing time was about 4 minutes. Requirements for the treatment system are (1) proper mixing of the clay-waste feed and flocculant, (2) rapid removal of water as it is released, and (3) physical manipulation to promote cohesion of solids.

The concept of data availability must be addressed, because there are perceptible changes from year to year, and the availability of accurately reported, precisely defined statistics and nonstatistical information provides the only sound basis for analytical studies required for government policy planning or industry market analysis. As the countries of Eastern Europe and the former U.S.S.R. undergo the transition from centrally planned economies to market economies, there has been a perceptible increase in information availability for rather obvious reasons. Any industrial operation seeking economic assistance from Government and/or private sources outside the country in which the facility is sited must provide some appraisal of its operations at the time it seeks assistance, as well as some information on previous performance to serve as tools in evaluating its potential under the proposed development scheme for which it seeks financial assistance. Additionally, there was growing governmental recognition that concealment of much of the national mineral production, trade, and consumption data for purposes of national military and/or economic security probably never was very successful, never was really necessary for most commodities, and certainly proved unnecessary with the end of the so-called cold war. Natural gas was the only economically significant mineral produced. A significant amount of the gas output was consumed in the production of nitrogen fertilizer and electric power. Proved reserves of natural gas were abundant and at least sufficient to supply most of the country's industrial and domestic needs for many decades to come. Other mineral production was of little importance to the Bangladesh economy, although there were prospects for developing some of the nonmetallic minerals. The flat river-delta terrain comprising nearly all of Bangladesh made the potential for discovering major, economically exploitable mineral deposits poor. The deep sediments, however, have good potential for crude oil or additional natural gas discoveries.

"Records of individual wells form the basis for the successful operation of any company engaged in the production of petroleum. The expense attached to the compilation of records is negligible in comparison with the benefits resulting from their use. There a company has not a complete system of records, immediate attention should be given to the preparation of forms upon which to collect data, and, to the collection of data for these forms. The records needed vary with each district, but for each field a set should be adopted that will best meet the needs of each property. Practically all operators, and particularly all successful operators, agree on the necessity of good records, shopping what the wells have done, are doing, and may be expected to do in the future. Any operator realizes the value of records of sales of oil and should place almost equal emphasis on the records of well logs and histories showing the east and present performances of wells. Indeed, trustworthy records are absolutely necessary for the proper operation of any oil or gas property.Complete records should be kept on each well from the time the location and elevation are determined until the well is abandoned, and the engineer should review old records often enough to be familiar with the past performance of the various wells and with the conditions that affect production. "Introduction Ore from stopes in metal mines is generally dumped or drawn into chutes or raises through which it passes by gravity to the haulage levels. Occasionally, and under some conditions quite frequently, the ore in a chute will wedge or hang and refuse to run. This hanging of the ore may be due to the packing of damp or clayey material, to boulders forming an arch, or to loose lagging or other timber becoming lodged in the chute.In drawing material from a loading chute it is drawn out a car at a time, and the intermittent flow of the material .increases its tendency to hang. When the obstruction in the chute is near or at the loading gate, the chute pullers start the ore by punching it with iron bars inserted through openings in the chute gate. When the obstruction is beyond reach of the bars, other means of starting the ore must be used.In some systems of mining, chutes or ore raises are built with timber as the stope extends upward. Generally, a manway is left alongside of the chutes, and when the ore hangs in a chute usually it can be started by a miner from the manway ladder by pounding on the timbers of the chute or by punching the ore with a bar inserted through small holes in the chute lining. Special methods of starting clogged ore, such as shaking a chain left hanging in the chute, are used at some places.In other systems of mining, ore passes or chutes are run through solid rock and when the ore hangs in one of these passes, either it must be blasted or else started from the top. Sometimes the ore can be started by running water into the top of the chute, but if the water does not start the ore moving, it must be blasted from underneath. This is done by detonating a bundle of cartridges under the obstruction in the chute or raise."

Combustion aerosols consist mainly of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC). Since EC strongly absorbs light and thus affects atmospheric visibility and radiation balance, there is great interest in its measurement. To this end, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published a standard method to determine the mass of EC and OC on filter samples. Another common method of measuring carbon in aerosols is the aethalometer, which uses light extinction to measure "black carbon" or BC, which is considered to approximate EC. A third method sometimes used for estimating carbon in submicron combustion aerosols, is to measure particle size distributions using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and calculate mass using the assumptions that the particles are spherical, carbonaceous and of known density. With an eye toward evaluating the use of these methods for measuring carbon in freshly emitted diesel aerosols, the objective of this paper is to compare the results among these methods and to investigate the role of OC when measuring the mass concentration of elemental carbon (or black carbon) in aerosols emitted by a medium-duty Diesel engine. Results indicate that the aethalometer response correlates well with the data from filter samples (R2 = 0.99), with a very slight positive interference at high levels of OC.

These investigations were conducted to determine the feasibility of molten salt electrorefining of zirconium scrap, offgrade sponge, and alloys under contract number AT(11-1)-475 between the Atomic Energy Commission and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Offgrade zirconium sponge having a Brinell hardness of 169 can be refined by this technique to produce metal having, consistently, a Brinell hardness of less than 90. Also, zirconium alloy scrap, approximating zircaloy-2 in composition, can be refined to recover zirconium metal with a Brinell hardness of less than 100 that is essentially free of the major alloying elements. Analysis showed that the quantities of these elements were decreased as follows: iron from 0.27 to 0.002, tin from 1.36 to 0.001, nickel from 0.02 to 0.001, and chromium from 0.12 to 0.002 percent.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThis paper is one of a series recently undertaken by the Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., to describe current practice in hauling ore and waste by truck at various mines.Heavy-duty ore trucks are replacing railroads at many large open-cut mines and even at a few underground mines. Recently a few mines have been equipped with trucks for transporting ore to a central point, from which conveyor belts move the ore out of the mine. This paper deals only with truck haulage methods and costs.The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers.A correct balance must be maintained between the primary crusher capacity, the number of shovels loading ore, and the number of trucks hauling ore.The cost of tires is important. Tire companies are manufacturing better tires. Mining companies are prolonging the life of tires by building better roads and maintaining correct tire pressure.The trend is toward heavier equipment. In 1949 it cost $0.0925 a long ton to haul ore and waste with a 15-ton truck and $0.0743 a long ton with a 22-ton truck.When trucks are properly maintained, hauling costs do not increase with the age of the trucks. During 1948 it cost $0.1118 per long ton to haul with the four oldest 15-ton trucks and $0.1130 per long ton to haul with the four newest 15-ton trucks, two of which were purchased in 1945 and two in 1947.The weighted ayerage cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and waste to the dump has been reduced from $0.1159 in 1948 to $0.087 in 1949."
