Task training is increasingly important in mining operations because of the ever-accelerating pace of technological innovations and the concomitant increasing complexity of mining equipment. This Bureau of Mines report describes two successful task training program In use in two open-pit taconite operations in northeastern Minnesota. The programs are different in approach, but both have improved safety and in- creased productivity while lowering costs. Methods of training both before and after passage of the 1977 Mine Safety and Health Act are described, and the impact of this act on task training at each operation is discussed. The report identifies four common principles that have contributed to the success of the two training programs and presents plans each operation has for improving future training through new technology.

This report describes the design, construction, and operation of a low temperature adiabatic calorimeter for measuring heat capacities of solids or liquids from 60° to 300° K. A brief discussion of the basic theory involved in chemical thermodynamics and the problems involved in obtaining accurate experimental data is presented. The operation of the calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat capacity of a sample of benzoic acid obtained from the National Bureau of Standards over a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. The measured heat capacity values of the benzoic acid compared favorably with similar values obtained by the Bureau of Standards, the maximum deviation being 0.5 percent. THEORY A brief discussion of the basic theory involved in chemical thermodynamics will illustrate the applications of heat capacity data and the problems involved in obtaining accurate experimental data.

Alveolar macrophages (AM) exposed to cytokines or bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produce the free radical nitric oxide (NO·) by an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). They also release reactive oxygen free radicals following exposure to silica dust. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether NO· is produced by rat AM and/or recruited leukocytes following the intratracheal (IT) instillation of silica. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (175 to 225 g) were IT instilled with either silica dust (10 mg/100 g body wt) or LPS (0.25 mg/100 g body wt). After 24 h, bronchoalveolar lavage cells (BALC) and lavaged lung tissue were assayed for iNOS mRNA. Cell counts of BALC and iNOS-dependent (Nw-nitro-Larginine methyl ester [L-NAME]-inhibitable) chemiluminescence generated by AM were also determined. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that the steady-state levels of BALC iNOS mRNA were significantly increased by 3-fold following IT silica and by 7-fold following IT LPS. Partially enriched fractions of either AM or leukocytes from silica-treated rats both exhibited significantly elevated iNOS mRNA in Northern analysis. iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence was significantly increased in AM by 36-fold following IT silica and by 89-fold following IT LPS. Differential counts of BALC showed that AM numbers did not change in any of the treatments; however, red blood cells increased by 30-fold following IT silica and by 23-fold following IT LPS. Total leukocytes (polymorphonuclear leukocytes plus lymphocytes) increased by 58-fold following IT silica and by 274-fold following IT LPS. The results demonstrate that AM and neutrophils iNOS steady-state mRNA levels, AM iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence, and lavagable red blood cells and leukocytes all increased following IT silica. These findings suggest that NO· production in rat AM and neutrophils is increased in response to silica. NO· has the ability to then combine with superoxide and form a highly reactive toxic species, peroxynitrite, which may be responsible in part for silica-induced lung damage.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has been developing processes for producing synthesis gas directly from coal, oxygen, and superheated steam. An atmospheric-pressure pilot plant was constructed and operated to: 1. Determine the operability of the plant for gasifying coals of different ranks under various operating conditions. Listed in decreasing order of rank, these coals included a Pennsylvania anthracite, a bituminous A coal from the Sewickley bed, West Virginia, and a subbituminous C coal mined in the Lake de Smet region of Wyoming. 2. Determine the effect of varying operating conditions on: (a) Standard cubic feet (std.c.f.) of oxygen and pounds of coal of different rank required to make M std.c.f. of product gas (carbon monoxide plus hydrogen); (b) carbon gasified, percent; (c) exit-gas temperature, degrees F.; and (d) heat loss, B.t.u. per pound coal. 3. Compare the gasification characteristics, indicated in item 2, of coals of different rank: Bituminous A, anthracite, and subbiturninous C. 4. Determine the concentration of dust in the gases produced and the efficiency of dust removal, and investigate the relation between the sulfur content in the coals gasified and the gases produced.

A high accuracy Burnett apparatus for use at 12,000 psi and 0° to 65° C has been constructed at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center. The apparatus is patterned after Burnett's original apparatus, but the working pressure is much higher and elastic distortion can be essentially eliminated. An operating procedure to permit faster experimental measurements is suggested.

"INTRODUCTION Mining in this area is inactive. The entire region is now comprised of small farms. Because approximately 1,500,000 tons of magnetite ore had been shipped from this area between 1855 and 1915, it was deemed probable that geophysical surveying and core drilling might indicate other ore bodies or sizable extensions of the previously mined ore bodies.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has, as its primary objective, the most effective utilization of our mineral resources, thus fortifying our national security and economy. For many years , it has been the common practice at most copper mines to recover copper in solution in effluent mine water by precipitating the copper with scrap iron.4/ The technique employed varies from simply throwing scrap iron or tin cans into the waste ditches to passing the water through elaborate launder systems containing detinned scrap and baled cans . In general , a considerable amount of low - cost copper has been recovered that otherwise would have been lost . Iron consumption usually varies from 1 to 1-1/2 pounds of iron for each pound of copper recovered . The grade of the precipitate may be as much as 90 percent copper.4/ ,5/ Where the consumption of iron is materially greater , its cost is likely to be the determining factor of profit . In times of emergency, when the demand for scrap iron for remelting increases the cost of the iron sharply, and the supply of tin cans is not large enough to meet requirements , recovery of the copper might not be economical . The three principal reactions that take place when an acid mine water containing iron and copper salts in solution is brought into contact with metallic iron are : (1 ) Copper is precipitated and an equivalent amount of iron is dissolved , CuSO4 + Fe Cu + FeSO4 ; ( 2) ferric salts are reduced to ferrous salts , Fe2 (SO4 ) 3 + Fe = 3FeSO4 ; and (3) the free acid in the solution reacts. with metallic iron to produce ferrous sulfate , H2SO4 + Fe = H2 + FeSO4 . = Because of the reported high.consumption of iron (5 to 6 pounds per pound of copper precipitated ), when copper in water from the Hornet mine of the Mountain Copper Co. ( California ) was precipitated upon scrap iron , a series of tests was made to determine . the . optimum treatment, time , and consumption of iron .

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the various methods of removing the liquid from tailings slurries that contain very fine grained solids. Gravitational settlement, centrifugation, filtration, and thermal drying methods are discussed in detail. Chemical additives, electrokinetic dewatering, and the rotary trommel screen are also mentioned. Lists of dewatering equipment and suppliers are given in the appendixes to assist the planner who must choose the most efficient, economic, and practical method of dewatering very fine grained mill tailings.

Stockpiles containing 2.3 million tons of lignite constructed in the period 1948-56 in conjunction with the construction of Garrison Dam on the Missouri River demonstrate successful stable long-term storage of lignite. Uniform and thorough compaction of each of the I-foot-thick layers by which the piles were constructed produced a bulk density of 70 Ib/cu ft. Air penetration into the stockpiles was restricted to a degree that prevents spontaneous heating or deterioration of the stored lignite, A continuing record of observations beginning with stockpiling operations in 1948 has been accumulated, This includes periodic fuel analysis, analysis of pile gases, and measurement of pile temperatures on the first large stock-pile, pile 5. This report describes the stockpiling method, the changes in heating value, pile gas composition, and pile temperature and summarizes observations from 1953 to 1964, Data accumulated attest to the stability of the stored lignite. The variation of the average heating value of periodic pile-depth samples is only 160 Btu/lb (11,990 to 11,830) on the moisture" and ash-free (maf) basis during almost 10 years of storage. Temperature levels of the pile interior are progressively decreasing. At pile surface, cyclic variations occur with the season. The only problem encountered with the large stockpiles is wind and water erosion of the pile surface. The partially successful control measures used are described.

This report presents a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of technical factors related to the production of special carbon and tar from selected Wyoming coals. Certain Wyoming high-volatile bituminous and subbituminous coals were processed in bench-scale apparatus to determine potential carbonization yields and in pilot plant retorts to produce sufficient char and tar for testing. These tests have shown that a critical selection of coal is necessary when the coal is processed for a specialized carbon. Generally high yields of tar are obtained from low-temperature carbonization of Wyoming high-volatile bituminous and subbituminous coals, and the yield of tar usually increases with increase in rank within this range of coals. The production and evaluation of industrial carbons from Wyoming coals by using pilot plant and bench-scale techniques is part of the continuous program of upgrading western coals. It has been found that: 1. Most Wyoming coals are nonagglomerating and may be carbonized in fluidized systems. Chars produced in pilot plant retorts at low temperatures contain about 17 to 23 pct, residual volatile matter and are easily ignited. These chars appear suitable as power plant fuel. The tar-plus-light-oil yields range from 14 to 40 gal./ton of raw coal processed. 2. Wyoming high-volatile coals produce a slightly smaller and somewhat weaker coke than currently mined Western United States high-volatile coals used commercially as blending stock in metallurgical coke production.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded? a contract to Foster-Miller, Inc. to develop guidelines for designing, constructing, stocking, and maintaining rescue chambers in underground mines. This report develops information and recommendations which could be used by a mine operator who desired to install a rescue chamber. Volume I covers the following major areas: atmospheric life support, configuration and construction, chamber location, power and lighting, equipment and supplies, communications, and psychological aspects and training. Volume II contains the following appendices: History of Barricading, Chamber Pressuriztion Considerations, Diffusional Infiltration of Gas, Compressed Air Storage, Location Examples, and Psychological Aspects.

To determine the availability of phosphate rock from domestic re- sources, the Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential production of phosphate rock from the demonstrated resources of 130 mines and deposits. The evaluation included an estimation of resources, engineering methods, and capital and operating costs, and an economic analysis to determine each operation's average total cost of production over the life of the mine, including a 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return on all investments. Quantified but not evaluated in this report are substantial phosphate resources at the inferred and hypothetical resource levels. The 130 mines and deposits contain 6.4 billion tons of recoverable phosphate rock product, about 20 pct from producing mines. At total production costs of under $30 per ton in January 1981 dollars, about 1.3 billion tons of phosphate rock product is potentially available, over 90 pct from producing mines. This study suggests that production from low- cost, high-grade phosphate mines now in operation will decline during the next decade, and new higher cost, Lower grade mines will have to be developed to satisfy demand into the next century, In addition to the demonstrated resources evaluated in this study, 7 billion tons of inferred-level and 24 billion tans of hypothetical- level phosphate rock are potentially recoverable, which, in part, includes material containing high amounts of magnesium, Much of this material could likely become available in the near future.

In a recent report3/ the authors presented a rapid method of calculating, by means of a desk calculator, the future performance of oil reservoirs in which the motivating agent was gas. The accuracy of the method was tested by data obtained from an electronic computer. Because of the accuracy obtained for the limited number of calculations performed, considerable interest has been expressed in the electronic computer program used to obtain the comparative data by an analytical solution. Accordingly, the computer procedures for the analytical solution are presented in this report. In an earlier report, 4/ a reservoir appraisal procedure was published in which an iterative method was used. Many requests were received for the computer program used to obtain the values given in that paper. That program, with some modifications, also is presented in this report. The modifications are given because of the progress that his been made in computers, and because much of the program for the analytical solution is usable for the iterative procedure.

The purpose of the investigation was to determine the oxidation behavior of selected tungsten-cobalt alloys. Specimens of Wand W-Co containing 0.7, 1.7, 3.4, and 9.7 weight-percent Co were subjected to pure 02 at 1,000° and 1,100° K, and specimens of W-Co containing 29.8 weight-percent Co, at 1,100° K. Reaction kinetics were determined volumetrically. For specimens other than those containing 29.8 percent Co, the reactions proceeded at about a constant rate at either temperature, indicating the formation of a scale of constant protectivity; the reaction rates were essentially independent of the Co concentration. The scales on these alloy specimens consisted principally of WO3 and CoWO4. Specimens of a 29.8 weight-percent Co alloy, consisting primarily of the W6CO7 phase, oxidized with only slight deviations from the parabolic rate law at 1,100° K. The protective scale on these specimens consisted chiefly of Co3O4, CoW04, and W1 8°49; Co3O4 was outermost, and the W18O49 was adjacent to the alloy. The results suggest that the Co-rich outer scale inhibited the inward transport of 0 to an extent sufficient to greatly limit the amount of the nonprotective WO3 formed, so that protective W18O49 formed instead.

Highly stressed rock in stopes continues to be a primary safety risk for miners in underground mines because this condition can result in failures of ground that lead to both injuries and death. Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health studied two methods for identifying stress in rock. A seismic tomographic survey, finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology were integrated to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. Electromagnetic (EM) emissions were also investigated in the Galena Mine, a deep underground mine in Idaho, in an effort to determine if these emissions could be used as indicators of impending catastrophic ground failure. Results of this research indicated that (1) seismic tomography appears to be a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars, while (2) EM emissions do not appear to be significant precursors of impending catastrophic ground failure.

This Bureau of Mines investigation addressed two primary issues of air velocity measurement in mines: the determination and use of correction factors, and the development of guidelines for the selection of a suitable site at which the measurements should be taken. Other facets of the investigation included a comparison of measurement methods and devices, and aircourse cross-sectional area measurement. The study consisted of theoretical, laboratory, and in-mine investigations. The measurement devices included in the experimental phase were vane anemometer, vortex shedding anemometer, a prototype thermoan-emometer, smoke tube, and oil of wintergreen sprayer. The measurement methods included single-point centerline, timed-point traverse, continuous traverse for the anemometers, and various distances and cloud positions for the smoke tube and oil of wintergreen devices. The study resulted in guidelines for measurement site selection that are applicable to most inmine situations. It also showed that the use of correction factors is problematic. There are many potential pit-falls and there are cogent arguments against using certain correction factors. However, generalized correction factors were developed that can be successfully applied in routine ventilation work, provided that their use is properly understood.

"The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along chemical and metallurgical lines to state definitely just what place it will occupy in the metallurgical industry. The theory upon which the process operates has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for the past twenty years, and research and experimental work has been conducted by many investigators.Much of the experimental work done has never been published, and it seems that the accumulation of such results if made known would be an important aid to the further development of the process. The object of this paper is, therefore, to bring salient features of the process to the attention of the metallurgical industry, both for the purpose of furnishing information, and receiving from interested parties any comments which the reading of this article may suggest. A bulletin covering the work done at the Intermountain experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, situated at Salt Lake City, Utah, is in course of preparation.The chloridizing roast is usually accompanied by appreciable losses due, to the volatilization of the metals as chlorides during the roast, these losses often running as high as 30 per cent, depending upon the temperature, the character of the ores and the associated gangue material. It was not until 1891 that Croasdale, (Croasdale, Stuart, Engineering and Mining Journal, Aug. 29 1903) by observing this and stack deposits from the chloridizing roast, recognized the possibility of making volatilization a major instead of a minor feature of the roast. He then made tests on a large number of tires from different, localities, the result of which showed the, general application of the process. The main difficulty, as stated, by Croasdale, was the lack of a suitable means for recovering the fume from the furnace gasesIn 1913, Cottrell (See Mining and Scientific Press, March 29, 1913; alsoTrans. This report covers the investigation of the MacArthur copper deposit and several adjacent claims in the Mason mining district; Lyon County, Nev. (fig. 1). As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was begun first on the MacArthur claims. Work was done later on some adjacent claims in the immediate area, as shown by figure 2. Field work was begun by the Bureau of Mines on January 16, 1950, and completed on October 25, 1950. Eight diamond-drill holes were completed, for an aggregate of 3,414 linear feet, Analyses were made of' each drilling interval. The report includes a brief history of the district and a description of the deposits and of the work done by the Bureau of Mines.

Abrasives are essential to the manufacture of munitions - airplanes, gas, shells, tanks, and in fact every product that involves metal forming or finishing. An indication of the importance of abrasives in the national defense and aid-to-Britain programs is the close peace-time correlation between demand for abrasives and automobile production, which in recent years has consumed more than 35 percent of the total output of abrasives. Unprecedented demands on the abrasives industry are forecast by the rapid expansion in airplane output, tie increased mechanization of all armed forces, and the consequent speeding up not only of the factories where finished munitions are made but also of the steel mills and other factories were additional large quantities of abrasives are needed for snagging or rough-grinding semifinished products before they can be used by the fabricators. A recent survey by the artificial abrasives manufacturers indicates that they can readily increase their output 75 percent compared with the previous peak of 1937 without building new plants. By overhauling production schedules, their maximum production possible could be increased to 182 percent of the 1937 output, and the nature of the industry is such that plant capacity could be increased rapidly if need therefor should arise. No figures on the estimated requirements for abrasives in 1941 or 1942 have as yet been compiled, but the industry feels that it can meet demands as they develop.

Oxidation procedures based on the chlorine-hypochlorite system were investigated for improving gold recovery from carbonaceous gold ores. The oxidation pretreatment prior to cyanidation was accomplished by (1) addition of sodium hypochlorite to ore pulp, (2) by addition of chlorine to ore pulp, and (3) by generation of hypochlorite in situ by electrolysis of a brine solution used to pulp the ore. Gold extraction of 90 pct was achieved by cyanidation of carbonaceous ore that had been pretreated with 20 Ib per ton sodium hypochlorite at 50° C for 4 hours. Similarly, pretreatment of the ore pulp with 35 1b chlorine per ton at 24° to 30° C and 15 hours reaction time resulted in 89-pct gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Concomitant studies showed that electrolyzing the pulp prepared with a brine solution was equally as effective as electrolyzing hypochlorite and chlorine for oxidizing carbonaceous ore constituents that are deleterious to cyanidation. Gold extraction of 90 pct was obtained by electrolysis when 275 lb of are was treated at 200 amp for 7 hours in an 8-to 10-pct salt solution. Power consumption was in the range of 60 kwhr per ton.
