The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials5 that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-ran]: coals according; to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. Agglutinating and weathering indices arc used to differentiate between certain adjacent groups.

A 20L ignition test chamber has been used to test suspensions of 7 UK and world traded coals in air and O2/CO2 mixtures typical of oxy-combustion conditions. The coals varied in rank from sub-bituminous to bituminous and were tested in varying concentrations from the ignition limit to 400g/m3. Following each successful test the combustion residue was collected, weighed and analysed within a thermogravimetric analyser, allowing Q factors to be estimated. The ignition limit varied slightly in air, but was mostly around the 200g/m3 level. With the exception of Coal C, which was much harder to ignite, it correlated roughly with coal rank. The ignition limit changed significantly with O2 concentration when in mixed O2/CO2 gases. Only a few high volatile coals ignited in 21% O2/CO2 v/v, and then only with a 2500 J, rather than a 1000J, igniter. An increase in O2/CO2 levels to 30 or 35% gave ignition patterns similar to those carried out in air with a further increase to 40% having little additional effect. In addition the minimum ignition concentration decreased with increase in O2. Heterogeneous combustion or gasification of the coal by CO2 appears to be confirmed by comparing weight loss results for air and O2/CO2 mixtures respectively for an equivalent peak pressure rise.

Two modes of seal application were identified, and promising state-of-the-art seals of both types -shaft and drum -were selected for initial rating by non-destructive testing. Only one shaft seal survived the initial test, and a search was made for other candidate seals including new seals. One new type of seal was found that gave promising enough operation, as both a shaft and drum seal, to be recommended for installation in prototype wet-head machines.

This report establishes a methodology for the evaluation of gas detection devices and is the result of a critical investigation into the basic principles defining gas detector performance. A scheme is presented to evaluate the performance of a test sample of gas detectors based on the detector type and intended application. Test procedures, worksheets, test apparatus, glossary and statistical methods for handling test data arc given. In addition, evaluation standards and test parameters are identified. It is intended that this report serve as a comprehensive framework for the eventual certification of all gas detectors for mine applications. A plan is proposed and recommended for the quantification and implementation of evaluation standards for gas detection device certification.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. This is the second of two interrelated studies of waterborne transportation. The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. All the principal mineral-industry imports and exports of the gulf coast are mentioned in the report, including metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuel products, The gulf coast foreign trade in mineral industry products was determined to be composed of a small number of commodities.

For several years prior to about the middle of 1928 both the number and capacity of natural-gasoline plants showed a steady increase; this resulted from a material gain in the supply of casinghead has due to the discovery of a number of flush fields with relatively high gas-oil ratios. From 1928 to date some form of proration has been continually in force, with a consequent curtailment in the supply of wet gas. This decline in available gas and a severe decrease in prices, due largely to the increasing competition of light refinery products, has eliminated virtually all of the weaker units during the last 5 years, with the result that the number of plants declined from 1,155 on January 1, 1928 to 19035 on January 1, 1930, to 909 on January 1, 1932, and then to 859 on January 1, 1934, The struggle of the small high-cost producers to exist is illustrated further by the trend in the number of shut-down plants, which has increased from 36 on January 1, 1930 to 100 on January 1, 1932 and to 128 on January 1, 1934. The increase in the number of plants prior to 1929 resulted in a material gain in the total capacity, but the decline in number between 1929 and 1932 was not followed by a corresponding decrease in capacity, as gains resulting from the construction of a few very large plants overbalanced the loss due to the dismantling of a large number of small ones. However, the low prices of 1932 and 1933 supplied little incentive for new construction, and the total capacity declined in approximately the same ratio as the number. Thus the total capacity declined from 11,387,000 gallons daily on January 1, 1932 to 13,060,000 gallons daily on January 1, 1934, Of the latter 9,181,000 gallons (91 percent) represented the capacity of the operating plants and 679,000 gallons (9 percent) the capacity of the idle plants.

Hafnium appears to be among the more abundant of the newly discovered elements . Though quite widely distributed in nature , its compounds chemically so resembled those of zirconium , its sister element , that it escaped detection until 1923 , when Coster and Hevesy announced the discovery of the element , to which they gave the name of " hafnium " , from Hafniae , the Latin name for Copenhagen , where their research work was performed . Hafnium has so far been found only as a minor constituent of zirconium minerals . Zirconium as an element was discovered more than 140 years ago , but only a few unimportant uses were found for the metal or its compounds until some 18 years ago ; it is still classed among the rarer commercial metals . It is not surprising , therefore , that hafnium has not yet found a definite place for itself in industry . Nevertheless it has commanded a considerable interest among scientists ; and in 1930 some 70 grams of perfectly pure oxide of hafnium were prepared in Europe . A commercial future for hafnium is already glimpsed in the radio industry , and its high melting point and electronic emissivity have already led to the taking out of patents for its use in radio tubes and incandescent electric lamp filaments and for the cathode surfaces of devices such as X- ray tubes and rectifiers .

Ibis report summarizes the results of the contract. Included are summaries of existing legislation pertaining to outcrop barriers and a state-of-the-art survey of outcrop barrier designs and related, mine closure techniques. Six sites were inspected in the field and are presented as case histories The data analysis presented includes a computer modeled seepage analysis, an overburden blew-out analysis, and a wedge stability analysis. The results tit these analyses are interpreted to form recommendations for coal outcrop barriers which will minimize seepage and the potential for failure. Supplementary support and reinforcement alternatives are also discussed.

The overall injury experience, excluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, reported by operators, was 174 fatal and 11,357 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an aggregate worktime of 451 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 25.55 per million man-hours, comprising 0.39 for the fatal and 25.17 for the nonfatal injuries. The combined severity rate of the disabilities was 3,779 days lost or charged per million man- hours, consisting of 2,314 for the fatal and 1,465 for the nonfatal injuries. The average severity of all disabilities during 1961-63, was 148 days per injury. The number of days lost and/or charged, ex- cluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, was 1,440,000 days charged to fatal injuries and 661,290 days lost from nonfatal injuries. An average of 70,966 men were at work daily. The outstanding cause for fatal injuries was the fall of rock or ore from the back, while most of the nonfatal injuries were caused by handling materials, slips or falls of persons, machinery, falls of rock or ore from back and side, and haulage. Injury experience at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, excluding officeworkers, was 23 fatal and 3,214 nonfatal disabling injuries during a total work- time of 277 million man-hours. The injuries occurred at frequency rates of 0.08 per million man-hours for the fatalities and 11.61 for the nonfatal disabilities. The severity rate for all injuries of 1,085 days lost or charged per million man-hours comprised 498 for fatal and 587 for nonfatal injuries. The number of days lost, excluding officeworkers, at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63 was 138,000 from fatal injuries and 162,385 from nonfatal injuries, An average of 34,938 men were at work daily an active plant days during the three year period. The injury experience for officeworkers at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63 was 20 nonfatal disabling work injuries, (there were no fatal injuries reported), during an aggregate work-time of 28,694,244 man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 0.70 per million man-hours. There were no fatal injuries reported for officeworkers at non-ferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, but seven nonfatal injuries were reported during an aggregate work-time of 30,814,772 man-hours. The frequency rate for these injuries was 0.23 per million man-hours for this period.

The countries of Asia and the Pacific, with their large mineral resource base, are significant suppliers of a wide variety of minerals to both regional and world markets. Australia, China, and India dominate the commercial mineral exploitation in the region. Australia has known reserves of major minerals, which are adequate for both domestic demand, and for exports, and is a significant producer of bauxite; copper; diamond; gold; iron ore; lead; manganese; mineral sands (titaniferrous minerals, monazite, and zircon); nickel; salt; silver; tin; uranium; and zinc. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, ilmenite (titanium), magnesite (magnesium), molybdenum, rare earths, and tungsten. China also has large resources of low-grade iron ore and significant resources of other mineral commodities, such as coal, based on its production and export capabilities. India has significant resources of bauxite, barite, graphite, iron ore, and mineral sands.

The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite and scrap mica, third in oystershell, third in kaolin, and fifth in dimension limes-tone and dimension marble. International Trade.-The international trade passing through the Mobile customs district was valued at $2,524 minion in fiscal year 1976, up 20% from that of the previous year. Of the total value of trade passing through the district, 52% of the value of experts and 89% of the value of imports were handled through the port at Mobile. The major export Commodity was coal through McDuffie Coal Terminal which amounted to nearly 2.9 million tons, up from 2.4 million tons in 1975. This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Joy Mfg. Co. shuttle car. These instructions are based upon actual installations made in the mine on two shuttle cars, model 21SC-2E. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other shuttle cars with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions hexein would he applicable to the other shuttle cars and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

"INTRODUCTION Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, Investigation of the fluorspar deposits of the Northgate area was begun in June 1944 and completed in March l946. Mining Operations were active in the district during most of the period of investigation.The Fluorspar, Fluorine, and Camp Creek mines develop the two more promising vein systems known in the area, the Fluorspar group of claims covering one vein system and the Fluorine and Camp Creek groups the other. Figure 1 shows the location of the properties. The Fluorspar and Fluorine properties were operated (except during the winter months) by the Western Fluorspar Corp. The Camp Creek mine was operated during 1943 and 1944 by Kramer Mines, Inc.The properties were examined April 20 and again November 4 to 12, 1943, by C. R. Wilfley, a Bureau of Mines engineer, who recommended work to determine ore reserves and to serve as a guide for development. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines covered all three properties."

Refuge chambers may potentially save the lives of miners during a mine emergency. For this reason, it is crucial that miners know how to operate them. Unfortunately, because refuge chambers provide so many services, they can be very complicated and difficult to operate. Therefore, NIOSH has created this document with suggestions for developing manuals and educational materials. A multidisciplinary team comprised of NIOSH engineers, sociologists, psychologists, health communication professionals, and geologists developed the recommendations contained in this document. These recommendations are based on an evaluation of manufacturers? instruction manuals from both the U.S. and globally, interviews with over 20 mining and safety experts, and an extensive literature review. This research, focused on the best practices for refuge chambers, led to the formulation of this document. It is intended to offer suggestions to manufacturers and mine operators on how to create effective and easy-to-understand training manuals for miners as well as tips to create the most comfortable and usable refuge chambers. It should be noted that these recommendations are not meant to substitute for manufacturer-supplied materials but rather to be used in conjunction with manufacturer?s materials. Manufacturers should always be consulted for up-to-date information about their chamber. Although different states and different mines refer to underground refuges by different names, this guide will simply refer to underground refuges nearest to the face as refuge chambers, whether inflatable from a skid or constructed from steel. Other popular terms for refuge chambers are rescue chambers, rescue shelters, and refuge shelters. Refuges that are nearer to the shaft, whether a prefabricated refuge chamber or one built into a crosscut, will be referred to as outby refuges because of their location in the mine. Outby refuges can be permanent, semipermanent, or portable and are usually located at every other SCSR cache. Outby refuges are sometimes called hardened rooms, outby shelters, and in-place shelters. When discussing outby refuges and refuge chambers collectively, this guide will refer to them as underground refuges. Other terms for underground refuges include refuge alternatives, locations of safety, and safe havens. This document is designed to be read either cover to cover or by specific section. It is recommended that on first read, this guide be read cover to cover. In subsequent readings, manufacturers and mine operators may find it easier to use the table of contents page to locate specific information on parts of the refuge chamber.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPF's) reduce the concentration of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and may reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) in diesel exhaust. Asamera Minerals' Cannon Mine first installed CDPF's in 1987, and currently has 12 diesel-powered vehicles equipped with CDPF's. The Cannon Mine and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to evaluate the durability and performance of a CDPF. One of the CDPF's used at the mine was periodically evaluated in the USBM's diesel emissions laboratory after 839, 1,584, and 2,881 h of in-mine service. The objectives of this report are to present results from the USBM's evaluation of this CDPF, to describe the Cannon Mine's experience and cost analysis of using CDPF's, and to make recommendations for the future use of CDPF's. CDPF's improve air quality at the Cannon Mine, but they frequently become plugged and are subject to excessive mechanical shocks and stress, shortening their useful life. Mine records indicate that CDPF's account for 0.8 to 4.9 pct of the vehicles' operating cost at the lVine. CDPF life to date has ranged from 1,671 h to more than 5,992 h. Laboratory tests of the CDPF determined that DPM removal efficiency decreased and regeneration temperature increased over time.
