The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

In flotation, particulate materials are separated by controlling the hydrophobicity of the particles using appropriate collectors. In this regard, contact angle (?) is the most important process variable. However, the flotation models used in industry today do not include ? as a parameter. As result, flotation circuits are designed based on the first-order flotation rate constants (k) determined from laboratory experiments. A problem with this approach is that laboratory experiments usually give substantially higher k values than achievable in full-scale operations, which makes it difficult to use the model for plant design. In the present work, we have developed a model from first principles using both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters, such as ?, ?-potentials, surface tension (?), particle size, energy dissipation rate, etc. The basic approach is similar to the one developed previously for bubble-particle interactions under laminar flow conditions (Yoon and Mao, J. Colloid and Interface Science, 181, 61, 1996) except that the model parameters have been modified by considering the turbulence in a flotation cell. In addition, the model describes the recovery processes in froth phase, including bubble-coarsening due to coalescence. Based on this model, we have developed a computer simulator (FlotSim) that can be used to design flotation circuits from the mineralogical (or liberation) data on the feed and the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flotation machine. Since the model is dynamic, it can also be used for process control. Further, the simulator has predictive capacity as it is based on a first-principles model. The model-based simulator has been validated in a carefully controlled bench-scale flotation experiments. "Comminution is the most energy intensive operation which constitutes the major portion of operating and capital costs of the mineral processing plants. Working at the maximum operating capacity of comminution equipment plays a significant role in the efficiency of the circuit. Appropriate design of cone crusher feed box could result in the choked crushing which is known as a vital factor in achieving target performance. In this research, the non-uniform cone crusher feeding at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex was studied and appropriate measures were taken to solve the problem. The problem resulted in non-uniform and high wear rate of crusher liners and high fluctuations of power draw. In recent decades, the discrete element method (DEM) has been applied successfully to study the effect of different factors on the behavior of particles flow. In this work, various designs for feed box were tested using an in-house developed DEM software called KMPCDEM©. The best feed box design obtained from the simulations was selected, constructed and installed in of the cone crushers. The new feed box design resulted in more uniform feed distribution on the distributor plate of crusher indicated by a reduction of the standard deviation of power draw measurements from 13 to 3 kWh. The better control of the crusher, 49% increase in the crusher throughput and finer and narrower product size distribution were the main outcomes of the installation of the new feed box. Furthermore, the wear rate on mantle and liners of crusher not only decreased but it also became uniform.INTRODUCTION Comminution is the most energy intensive operation which constitutes the major portion of operating and capital costs of the mineral processing plants. Reaching the maximum operating capacity in comminution equipment is a key sign of approaching the nominal productivity of the process. Due to the effect of crusher efficiency on the downstream circuit performance, optimization of the crushing circuits has received considerable attention (Herbst, & Potapov, 2004; Quist, & Evertsson, 2010; Li, Huiqi, McDowell, Glenn R, Lowndes and Ian, 2014; Cleary, Sinnott, Morrison, Cummins, & Delaney, 2017). Improving the performance of crushing circuits not only decreases the capital and operating costs but also increases the efficiency of downstream grinding circuits (Jacobson, Janssen, & Urbinatti, 2010). In cone crushers particles can be subjected to two different modes of compressive breakage; single particle breakage (free feeding) and inter-particle breakage (choked feeding). The maximum efficiency of the cone crusher directly depends on the type of feeding arrangement (Operation Manual, 1977). An appropriate feeding must lead to choked feeding the cone crusher. If the rate and method of feeding the crushers are correctly be executed, the maximum efficiency of the crushers could be available (Jacobson et al., 2010)."

Ammonia and Amonium salts have been recognized as effective leaching agents in hydrometallurgical processes due to low toxicity and cost, easy recovery and high selective recovery of metals. New research findings of considerable advantages of leaching by these agents and elimination of problems associated with acid leaching has resulted in a new approach in the world to this method. The investigations in this field indicate more frequent use of this method for extracting copper from ore and concentrate relative to other basic metals. In this paper, we have attempted to describe the basis and different ammonia leaching methods and present the major research activities in this field for copper. We have also presented the latest findings and related novel processes. Comparative assessment of advantages and disadvantages of this method relative to acid leaching method, kinetic study of copper ammonia leaching and evaluation of Eh-pH diagrams in a system containing water and ammonia are other parts of our study. Finally, by describing the studies on copper extraction from the resulting pregnant solutions, the applicable extraction agents have been reviewed.

"This work presents the small-scale mining cluster of kaolin in Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and Paraiba (PB), both Brazilian states, including the following information: number of companies, process flowcharts, production numbers, mineralogical (XRD) and chemical (XRF) composition, granulometric distribution (screen and laser granulometer) and image analysis (SEM). Some social indicators in the region of the RN and PB States are presented in association with these data. The number of companies and their flowsheet were obtained through in situ visits and sample collection for technological characterization. The comparative study of the different flowsheets for kaolin production in the world was done using the databases and presenting the state of the art of kaolin processing. The results indicated that the mean feed typically contains 35-39% kaolin with quartz, muscovite and kaolinite as main mineralogical components and SiO2 (65.83%), Al2O3 (21.19%), K2O (3.9%), and Fe2O3 (0,63%) as main chemical constituents. The products of mineral processing are twofold, one between 74 µm and 37 µm, and the other smaller than 37 µm. The wastes of operation had major quantities of kaolin. The average Human Development Index (HDI) of the cluster region is approximately of 0.61, which shows an association between mineral processing plant and social indicators. The kaolin recovery, however, is between 30-55% for the three most common types of flowsheets that are currently used in the small kaolin mining cluster, indicating a need for technological improvement to achieve regional development. These data could be used incrementally to adapt the process plant currently used in the small-scale mining cluster of kaolin."

Polymetallic sea nodule is a good source of manganese having 22.3% Mn, 5.4% Fe, 6.14% Si, 1.1% Cu, 1.15% Ni, 0.076% Co & others. These nodules are available in plenty on the sea beds, generated over thousands of years. Nodules mainly consist of manganese dioxide and iron oxide phases and other metals are entrapped in the complex cage of these Mn-Fe oxides phases.World-wide research is going on sea nodules as an alternative future source of many metals, which has led to intensified efforts to develop practical and economical processes for recovery of these metals. Very little attempt has been made world over on manganese extraction from sea nodules. We at CSIR-NML, India have developed a direct reduction smelting process of nodules to recover manganese as Fe-Si-Mn alloy. This alloy is extensively used in the steel industry as deoxidizer and as an alloying element to make different grades of steel. Lab scale experiments were conducted to study the manganese distribution between Fe-Si-Mn alloy and FeO-SiO2-MnO-CaO-Al2O3-MgO slag at different temperatures by varying the basicity of the slag. The direct reduction smelting of nodules is carried out on 1 kg scale in 50 kVA electric arc furnaces to have Cu, Ni and Co alloy and Mn rich slag. This manganese rich slag is further treated in 50 kVA arc furnace to produce Fe-Si-Mn alloy. The composition of Fe-Si-Mn alloy obtained is in the range of Mn: 60-65%, Si: 14-17%, C: 1- 2%, S: 0.03% and the balance iron which is acceptable grade for industrial use. The equilibrium amount of MnO in the final slag is controlled by the temperature of the final melt and the silica, lime, alumina content of the final slag. Increasing the basicity of the slag plays a major role in minimizing the loss of MnO to slag, increasing the amount of SiO2 of the slag, increases the manganese loss in the slag. As is known, the oxidized antimony and antimonate are hard to treat. A new combined mineral processing flowsheet which is controlled in grinding and classification ?bulk floatation?gravity separation is adopted to dispose of gravity-separated tailings (antimony content: 1.48%; oxidization rate: 68.92%) in Muli Antimony Mine, the grade of floatation antimony concentrates is 32.64%; the grade of gravity-separated antimony concentrates is 26.99%; the combined grade of floatation and gravity-separated antimony concentrates is 30.85%, and the total recovery of antimony is 70.64%. Adopting the new mineral processing technique have solved the problem of over grinding of antimony ore by controlling grinding and classification, recovering effectively the sulfide antimony and the easy floatable oxidized antimony of fine size by bulk floatation, recovering effectively the oxidized antimony which is hard to float by classified gravity separation. This is a great breakthrough in the mineral processing technique of the recovery of the oxidized antimony. At present, favorable economic benefit has been obtained from the application of this processing technique in Muli Antimony Mine.

Blue dust is a high grade soft haematite material containing 96.14% Fe2O3 transformed into magnetite (Fe3O4), when it is subjected to planetary ball milling in the presence of iron powder as reducing reagent. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Laser particle size analyser have been employed to characterize various samples collected at various milling times to know the phase evolution, particle size distribution and morphology of particles. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the formation of magnetite phase at the optimum milling time of 40 hours. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) study demonstrates, that sample obtained at 40 hours of milling time exhibits saturation magnetisation of 14.757 emu/g whereas the starting material used in this study shows only 1.0425 emu/g. Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. Mineral processing is characterized by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customers´ requirements for product purity and consistent quality increase. Indian iron ores are characteristically friable in nature that results in generation of sizeable quantity of fines (0-10mm) every year during various stages of mining and processing in the country with grade varying from 50-60% Fe(T) and are high in silica/alumina (Al2O3 5-8%). The fines generated cannot be directly used for iron making (blast furnace/DRI units) in the country due its physical and chemical properties; therefore, large portion of it gets exported or dumped. Value addition to iron ore fines through various activities such as beneficiation & palletization is the need of the hour, which will not only be economically beneficial to the mining sector in the long run but also generate value addition & employment opportunities. Incentives may be given for adopting latest technologies for direct use of fines in iron making by agglomeration of fines in the form of Pellets and Sinters, as fines forms considerable part of iron ore resources. Due to selective mining, although the iron content of the ore is high but the alumina(Al2O3) content in iron ore is also significantly high which demands for beneficiation as high alumina will create problem during iron making like higher fuel consumption, poor quality of slag produced, reduced productivity of B.F. all mineral has been engaged in hematite iron ore beneficiation with its gravity and magnetic separators since the mid-nineties. The delivery of jigs started for the upgrading of iron ore for its utilization in a Direct Reduction Plant in Australia. Since then, various other installations with jigs for lumps and fines as well as upstream separators for fines are in operation in Brazil, Australia, India and South Africa. Low grade run of mine and/or dump ores are being processed with alljig®-, allflux®- and gaustec®-WHIMS as the core equipment. The article describes the technology in use, the characteristics of various iron ores and the product qualities achieved. The data presented shows the specific advantages of jig application on iron ore upgrading due to the possible high gravity cuts and the easy and low cost operation. The allflux®- technology provides the big advantage of high capacities and a two-step process, both in a single unit. The gaustec®-wet high intensity magnetic separators offer high capacity in combination with unsurpassed process flexibility. "In case of free gold presence in ore, there is always problem of a choice between the gravity-flotation and gravity separation flowsheets. Study of morphology of gold being extracted by different methods allows to find the most efficient solution. One of the latest methods of gold concentration for wide range of grain size (-0.8+0 mm) is a flash flotation. The paper presents comparative testing results of flash and centrifugal separation.The goal of the studies was to determine process and flotation parameters of flash flotation. In case valued minerals are soft if compared to host rock, such minerals tend to concentrate into circulating load of grinding circuit. Thus, valued minerals can be overground, and in turn, will result in low extraction in flotation circuit. Integration of flash flotation operation into process flowsheet has been evaluated. Flash flotation operation can be successfully used not only for gold but also copper, lead, nickel and silver minerals.With low-sulphide ores being a case study under laboratory conditions, various flotation (impeller rotational speed, air flowrate) and process (pulp density, collector consumption, frother consumption, time of flotation) parameters were studied in view of its impact on gold flash flotation. Experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions using special pneumatic mechanical flotation machines.INTRODUCTIONGravity separation is used for extraction of coarse gold before cyanidation and before flotation of polymetallic ores to increase gold total recovery into gravity copper and lead concentrates.Benefit of the flash flotation is efficient recovery of coarse gold carrier particles (sulphides) thus preventing its regrinding and, as a result, low recovery. Furthermore, combination of flash and conventional flotation results in final tailings that do not require further cyanidation.Combined gravity-flotation flowsheets are designed for concentration of ores containing gold within thewide range of grain sizes (see Table 1)."

The manufacturing process of bricks companies utilizes 90% magnesite from 85%~90% MgO. The main objective of the magnesite bricks was to utilizes the indigenous raw material available in bulk quantity. With better under-standing of chemistry of the mineral species and strict control of bricks manufacturing/processing conditions can be better produce efficiently, a low cost high quality bricks with minimum detrimental environmental impact.

"Following the adopted strategy for making the production modern, efficient and environmental friendly the Company completed a stage of the integrated program aimed at reconfiguration of its processing capacity.Upgrade of the Talnakh Concentrator with commissioning of two start-up facilities (SF) allowed an increase of 30% in its ore processing capacity up to 10 mtpa. In addition to a new high-tech equipment installed, a new concentration process was adopted offering the main advantage of 25-30% reduction of sulfides in concentrate. New concentration technology enabled the total amount of produced nickel concentrates (from Norilsk and Talnakh Concentrators) to be processed at upgraded smelting facilities of Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant and allowed decommissioning of smelting capacities of Nickel Plant resulting in emissions reduction by 30%.Nornickel plans to boost the capacity of Talnakh Concentrator to 18 mtpa by 2022, after commissioning of the 3rd SF. This will provide a shorter route for ores transportation from Talnakh mines along with improvement of cost/performance ratio of ore processing through the usage of the modern equipment and optimized concentration flow scheme. Total capacity of Talnakh Concentrator will be sufficient to process ores from Talnakh deposits with planned upstream assets development taken into account. Volume of ore mined from Norilsk deposits to be processed at Norilsk Concentrator will be also increased.Upgrading the crushing section at Kola MMC Concentrator in 2015 provided finer particles of the crushed ore, resulting in 6.6% increase in specific capacity of ore mills as well as 1% higher recovery of non-ferrous metals due to improved liberation of ore minerals.In 2015-2017 the Company was actively engaged in optimization of existing process flow schemes and parameters of Kola MMC, new high-performance reagents were adopted for concentration process, namely, collectors, depressors, flocculants. These measures allowed the Concentrator to reduce its annual operating unit costs and ensure sustainable production of concentrate with the lower grade of the incoming feedstock.Launched in October 2017, Bystrinsky GOK’s Concentrator was 3D designed and received a range of advanced technological solutions.All design process procedures and technologies rolled-out at the Company’s concentrators were developed by Russian R&D institutes, with the key role of Gipronickel Institute, R&D Service of Kola MMC and Polar Division's in-house Engineering Support Centre."

As opposed to large household appliances, in the processing of which dissambling has an important role, this possibility is pushed into the background as the size decreases. The practicable solution is physical liberation of the used small electronic household devices (by comminution) and separation of the liberated components according to their physical properties. In the first phase of the experimental work the structural/material composition of the typical products (mixer, kitchen robot, hair dryer, coffee machine, iron, bread toaster, vacuum cleaner, oil fryer) was determined. In the second phase a physical liberability test for each appliance using a rotary shear/shredder for crushing and a hammer shredder for milling was carried out. In the third phase the experimental separability tests using an air classifier and a shaking air table, as well as an eddy-current and an electrostatic separator were performed. In the present paper the results obtained using the air classifier and the electrostatic separator, are reported. To follow the life of a grain a new methodological procedure was elaborated. The particle size fractions after comminution were sorted into material fractions (copper, aluminium, plastics, etc.), then separated, and finally the recovery of the material components in the products were determined. Furthermore, the joint separability was investigated from two points of view: 1) for grain fractions and 2) for each waste appliance. The fine fraction (< 2 mm) of the high grade Mn-ore from the world class Moanda deposit, Francevillan basin, in Gabon, contains up to 30 wt. % of manganese and about 0.4 wt. % phosphorous. A pilot study at laboratory scale integrating mineralogy and geochemistry before and after ultrasonic treatment was conducted on the fine fraction (< 2 mm) of oxidized Mn ore in order to reduce the phosphorous content and enrich this fraction in manganese. The fine fraction was dried, crushed at 2 cm and sieved at 2 mm. The two fractions (< 2 mm and 2 mm ? 2 cm) were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microprobe ? electron dispersive spectroscopy analyses. Both fractions contain lithiophorite, cryptomelane and pyrolusite as Mn carrier, and goethite, muscovite, illite and quartz as contaminants. The Mn hydroxide nsutite was only found in the fraction 2mm ? 2 cm.The < 2 mm fraction is significantly richer in goethite, muscovite/illite, and quartz. Phosphorous carriers are mainly goethite (up to 2.8 wt. % P2O5), while the Mn minerals contain up to 0.8 wt. % P2O5. The Mn minerals are partly included in an agglomerate of goethite, muscovite/illite, and quartz. The < 2 mm fraction was treated by ultrasound for 30 s in normal water. Mineralogical and chemical analyses after ultrasound treatment showed that the Mn-minerals were largely liberated from the goethite-muscovite-illite agglomerate. Mass balance calculations show that after ultrasonic treatment the < 2 mm fraction was ? 50 % enriched in Mn and ?50 % impoverished in P.

"The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. There is an obvious disproportion in Russia gold-mining industry between the structure of gold reserves and the gold-mining techniques. The bulk of gold (over 70%) is extracted from alluvial deposit, 20%~25% from bedrock occurrences and 5%~7% from complex copper-zinc and polymetallic ores. The proved gold-bearing reserves are distributed as follows: alluvial ?19%, bedrock ?80%, the latter being sufficient to supply gold at the current production level for 100 years to come. In Russia, like elsewhere in the world, development of primary gold deposits is considered a first-priority line of development for gold-mining industry. Most of the gold-containing ores characteristic of Russian gold deposits are resistant ores with gold content varying between 3 ppm and 5 ppm usually showing quite low gold and silver recovery by cyanidation. Processing resistance of gold-containing mineral complexes is related to the presence of gold particles of submicrometric (<1.0 µm) and nanometric (10~100 nm) size, mostly asso-ciated with pyrite and arsenopyrite. Therefore switching over to processing bedrock entails a num-ber of technological problems that stem from chemical and physical resistivity of ores. The chemical resistivity can be overcome through flotation, oxidation roasting, autoclave leaching (biohydro-metallurgical oxidation), etc. The physical resistivity can be dealt with by resorting to traditional power-intensive methods,e.g. grinding to a ?40µm size, thermal treatments of sulphide concentrates and non-traditional high-energy methods of liberating the sulphides by means of power attack, e.g. electro-chemical oxidation, exposure to electron beam radiation and other methods. The modern non-traditional processes for treatment of rebellious noble metal-bearing ore, aimed at improving disintegration efficiency for finely dispersed mineral complexes are analysed. Advantages and perspectives of a new high-efficient, energy-saving and ecologically safe process of the nanosecond high-power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) effect are proved. The said process provides a stable increase in the valuable component recovery at lower energy consumption and production costs of the finite product at the stage of dressing rebellious gold-bearing ores and concentrated products. The experimental data prove high efficiency of the preliminary impulse treatment, thus, the increase in the gold recovery at the cyanidation stage amounted to 4%~12% from rebel-lious ores, 10%~30% from gravity concentrates, 5%~45% from flotation concentrates, 30%~80% from oil flotation tailings.

"Delivery of all volume of mined mass on the terrestrial surface results not only in irrational power expenses on moving of huge volumes of dead rock as a part of initial raw materials (especially vertically) on long distances, but also necessities of storing tailings in open-air. Thus, in bowels of earth, huge volumes of the developed space are formed. However, the nature doesn&apos;t suffer emptiness. As consequence, through the process of underground mining works, in earth bowels starts intensive development of rocks dislocation processes involving subsidence of terrestrial surface, and with it, begins irreparable damage every objects which are on that territory. Highly effective new methods of underground concentration of the various minerals, which deliveries of only target component on terrestrial surface integrally connected with transport process in stream and subsequent deliveries to destination in continuous mode by the long distance hydrotransport, allow not only to eliminate a construction of concentrating factories on the surface, but also storing of tailings of concentration process on open-air preventing dislocation of rocks, thanks to operative placing tails in the underground developed space. Surely, the main problem in the development of such gravity dressing technology is the problem of finding the optimal formula for the heavy liquid that will fill such system in close connection with the procedure of its full regeneration. The requirements for such liquid are being non-toxic and cheap. This question was solved successfully."

"The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling.INTRODUCTIONThe early 1900?s saw the beginnings of published papers which tackled the problem of what influenced the power draw of tumbling mills and what equations (models) were suitable for predicting power draw. This interest continued for the rest of the 20th century and the literature contains many papers that attempted to satisfactorily answer these questions. A common and disappointing theme in the majority of them, however, is the distinct lack of suitable experimentally derived power draw data. This deficiency consequently limited the practical application of many of the attempts at modelling mill power draw. Prior to the early 1990?s some limited data on the power draw of grinding mills in the literature can be found, but as Harris et al (1985) remarked they are ?... too frequently unusable simply because one or more essential variables have been omitted?. The absence of published results, from vigorous experimental testing of the various models, has resulted in a general lack of evaluation of the validity of assumptions and hypotheses that such models contain. Harris et al (1985) however, did make some efforts in attempting to evaluate the performance of various power prediction equations and in so doing further developed a semi-empirical one of their own. However, in using manufacturers? published data, which themselves were undoubtedly generated by proprietary equations of unproven validity, they probably succeeded in generating little more than a consensus of the various errors in these models."
