"During the past fifteen years, mines utilizing the block caving method have improved performance and systematically reduced total mining costs.This paper describes improvements in mine design, mine planning, and mine management, including methods enabling the Chilean and international mining industry to ensure cost savings and productivity growth while using the block caving method. These improvements have encouraged the re-evaluation of underground operations at operating and closed open pits, and challenge surface mining applications as the only low-cost mining method. This paper describes a strategy to estimate the optimum open pit to underground transition time during the life of a mine. IntroductionDuring the last fifteen years, block caving mines have experienced huge changes in designs, planning and administration. These changes have permitted operators to drastically reduce costs, improve equipment productivity, and improve overall business performance. As a consequence of this situation, the block/panel caving mining system is challenging actual open pit operations to maximize the net present value (NPV)."

"The North American mining industry faces challenging emissions regulations in the coming years with the introduction of new standards for off-road diesel engines. In order to remain competitive, industry stakeholders must invest in new technologies that are economically and environmentally sustainable.Westport Innovations Inc., Vancouver,British Columbia, has developed high-pressure direct injection (HPDI) technology that allows diesel engines to run primarily on natural gas with no intrusive engine modifications while reducing emissions of nitrous oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and CO2 with no loss in performance. This is accomplished through late-cycle, high-pressure direct injection of natural gas into a diesel engine combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke. A small amount of diesel fuel is injected first to initiate combustion, followed by the natural gas fuel main injection. The diesel cycle and its operating characteristics are fully retained including high combustion efficiency, lowspeed torque, high-power output, no engine knock, and fast response to load changes. Natural gas has not been an attractive fuel alternative in mining operations due to the reduced performance associated with spark ignition engines and the added weight and space required for compressed natural gas tanks. However, liquefied natural gas (LNG) can be stored with less impact on weight and space than compressed natural gas (CNG) by virtue of its increased energy density over CNG.Westport has applied HPDI technology to the Cummins QSK series engines for high horsepower applications such as power generation and mine haul trucking. HPDI can also be applied to other engine manufacturer platforms and market applications. Westport is interested in demonstrating the unique characteristics of HPDI in mine haul trucks to show diesel performance with low emissions levels using low-cost LNG fuel.Retrofitting a Tier 1 engine with HPDI would provide emissions reductions below the EPA 2006 Tier 2 standards while maintaining the performance and efficiency of the Tier 1 platform. The longer-term target is the Blue Sky voluntary standards of 3.8 g/kW-hr (2.8 g/bhphr) of NOx + non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), and 0.12 g/kW-hr (0.09 g/bhp-hr) of particulate matter (PM) and future standards. Typically, an HPDI engine is capable of reducing NOx emissions by 40% over diesel operation at the same efficiency. On a mining truck meeting Tier 2 standards, this NOx reduction would translate into NOx emissions approximately 14 t per year lower than under diesel operation. PM emissions are typically reduced by some 60% with HPDI fueling, which would translate into a yearly reduction of 650 kg. Similarly, engine-out greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are reduced by 21%, resulting in a yearly reduction of approximately 950 t per vehicle.Above those of emissions reduction, efficient natural gas usage in mine haul operations would offer significant benefits in terms of fuel cost savings, which may be further combined with monetary emission credits. HPDI technology would enable operators to exercise environmental stewardship while gaining a competitive advantage in advance of new Tier 2 and Tier 3 emissions regulations. The advantages of natural gas use among mine haul truck operations can be replicated across a broad range of engines and applications."

This paper describes a focus of work presently being conducted at the Rock Mechanics Research Group at the University of British Columbia. The underhand method under consolidated fill ensures a high recovery under an engineered back that is comprised of cemented rock fill and/or cemented paste fill. This method of mining is generally necessary either due to a weak rock mass comprising the immediate back and/or high induced back stresses. A major concern in the design of sill mats is the loading and strengths associated with the overlying sill mat. This paper reviews past practice coupled with present observations and measurements from over ten(10) mines throughout North America. It outlines areas of concern in terms of design requirements.

Suncor Oil Sands employs delayed coking technology in converting bitumen into synthetic crude oil. Currently up to 10,000 m3 of delayed coke (coke) is produced per day as a byproduct of the upgrading process, of which up to 9,000 m3 per day is placed in dry storage on Lease 86/17. A review was completed to examine the case history of leachate potential experiments from the dry storage of coke and the environmental relevance of coke leachate studies conducted over the past decade. The review included an evaluation of the potential impacts of environmental conditions within the location of coke storage, including precipitation pH, as well as daily and annual ozone trends. Coke leachate potential has historically been characterized using standard leachate testing protocols (i.e., TLCP, SPLP) together with other studies that have employed strong acids and oxidizing agents in the extraction fluids. The present paper highlights prevailing conditions in the Athabasca Valley air-shed with emphasis given to ambient ozone (oxidizers), as well as precipitation pH and acid input deposition rates, and will demonstrate that TCLP / SPLP tests lack the intended environmental relevance relative to the conditions under which coke is stored.

The Doyon Mine?s Zone 1 (Altered Zone), found along the southern boundary of the mine, encompasses approximately 20% of the mining reserves. The mineralisation is found in a series of steeply dipping narrow veinlets, which are contained in an extremely weak host rock: a sericitic schist with RQD values ranging from 0 to 20. Longhole mining methods are used, with either longitudinal or transverse approaches, depending on the width of the ore zone. Dilution is of critical importance in the mining of this zone, particularly in longitudinal stopes, where dilution levels have averaged 55% since 2000. Major factors influencing dilution in this zone include the stope geometry and standup time. A two-phase approach has been developed to mine and backfill longitudinal stopes: the top of the stope is pastefilled after approximately half of the broken ore has been extracted; the remainder of the ore is extracted once the plug has cured; and the remaining void is filled. This method has been used in six stopes to date, resulting in an average dilution of 17%. This paper details the application of this technique and its effect on dilution.

"A study of the various components contributing to energy costs and their relationships to generally trended operating data, such as tonnage, operating costs, etc. over progressively shorter time periods provides information for an energy audit. A study of annual data gives some insight into the importance of various energy components. As the time frame of the study 11rogresses through monthly, daily and finally, into quarter hourly data, the variations become more evident and most important, strategies develop to minimize energy costs. The results of an audit conducted during the summer of 1978 at Wesfrob Mines are reported to illustrate this important phase, prerequisite to a meaningful energy cost avoidance program.The balance of the paper deals with the energy conservation program at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Sudbury Operations, the material and control equipment, the commitment, the new energy accounting practices and lastly, the policies. Examples of successful energy conservation endeavors include automatic peal electrical load control, waste heat recovery from mine air and compressor cooling water, energy reductions resulting from lower building temperatures and curtailmen: of idling loads. The use of pulse meters to measure the flow of gas, steam, compressed air and electrical energy, with their signals interfaced to process computers, allows monthly, daily and if necessary, immediate reporting of energy and energy per unit of production information. The program so reported at Falconbridge’s Sudbury Operations is credited with an annual cost avoidance of .9 million dollars in a 14.0 million dollar annual energy account."

"There has recently been a resurgence of interest in unit flotation of mill discharges. At the Kidd Creek concentrator, this technique has been successfully applied to silver flotation in a 3050 mtpd silver-copper-lead-zinc division. The major incentive has been improved silver payment through increased overall recovery and better distribution between the sequential copper, lead and zinc concentrates. A large, but variable fraction of the silver in the ore is present as native silver and, being dense and malleable, is susceptible to overgrinding. Grinding circuit surveys showed high concentrations of silver in both primary and secondary circulating loads. Laboratory testwork confirmed that this was selectively flotable, identified the secondary ball mill discharge as the best feed stream and optimized flotation conditions. A 10 t/h pilot plant campaign confirmed that the rate of accumulation of silver was sufficient to sustain continuous production of a silver concentrate and that flotation of the whole stream was not necessary.The present 30 t/h production circuit recovers from 5 to 50% of the silver in the ore at a concentration ratio between 25 and 250. The circuit also contributes to a better understanding of ore mineralogy, as an 'on-line' indicator of elemental silver content."

"The data acquisition from industrial plants is a fundamental step for process modelling in process optimization, process analysis and automatic control.The introduction, some years ago, of modern distributed control and data acquisition systems in concentrators imposes a new approach in designing experimental schemes for data acquisition campaigns and new criteria for the treatment of the obtained discrete information.This paper presents the methodology applied to sample a zinc flotation circuit at Les Mines Selbaie, Joutel, PQ. Values of 85 process variables were obtained form the Distributed Control and Data Acquisition System (Bailey Network 90) and transferred to the DOS environment. Another 11 variables (flowrates and valve positions) were directly sampled using an IBM-PC compatible computer equipped with a data acquisition card and a signal processing circuit.All variables, under the vector form, were processed in the PC-MATLAB environment to either filter or eliminate the non-linear disturbances and noises, producing useful data for model development. The filtering algorithms are also presented.INTRODUCTIONProcess control does not need to be justified. Whether manual or automatic, any processing plant requires some form of control to accomplish its main objectives: a good quality product and a target throughput. Process control of mineral processing plants has steadily evolved from manual control, where the operator skills and/or experience play an important role, to some level of automatic control, usually considered better, as less human subjectivity is involved, at least when actions have to be taken.The design of these control systems requires the knowledge of the dynamics of the process it is deemed to control. Process modelling is therefore an essential step in the assessment and the design of a control strategy. The choice of model will depend on the available resources and manpower."

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. "Significant strides have been made during the past decade to integrate the traditionally separate administrative functions of financial management, materials management and maintenance management.In 1983, Key Lake Mining Corporation (KLMC) brought on-stream one of the most technologically advanced mining operations in North America. There was a requirement to support this new facility with state-of-the-art management information systems.This paper will discuss the development and evolution of the corporation's computerized information systems with specific emphasis on the utilization of computer systems to assist maintenance personnel in performing their work activities:Note: In August of 1989, the administration and operation of the Key Lake Mine was assumed by CAMECO - A Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation.IntroductionThe Key Lake Mining Corporation was incorporated in 1979 and operates a $500 million uranium mining and milling complex located in northern Saskatchewan.The feasibility study and environmental impact statements for the Key Lake Mine were submitted in 1979and in August of 1981, following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted. Ore processing commenced in October of 1983 and during 1984 a total of 10.4 million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) was produced. In 1987, an annual production of 13.5 million pounds was achieved clearly establishing Key Lake Mining Corporation as the world's leading producer of uranium oxide. Current ore resources are expected to extend production of the Key Lake facility into the year 2000."

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

Falconbridge Ltd Raglan Mine has been in production since 1998 and has produced annually some 900 000T of ore grading 3.1% nickel, 0.9% copper and 0.06% cobalt. The mine is located in Nunavik, Northern Quebec. The current mine life is estimated at approximately 20 years. Reserves are composed of numerous small ore bodies situated across a 65 km strike length. Planning the extraction of the ten small mineralized zones represents a great challenge to optimize. The overall objective is to maximize the company?s return on net assets. Actual planning uses computerized technology tools like Automod and Mine2-4D, and a conventional discounted cash flow method (DCF) of calculating net present value (NPV). The complex setting of Raglan could benefit from advance valuation techniques such as the real options method (RO). This paper will present the characteristics if the mines that make it a good candidate to use RO to gain further insight.

Radiation grafted structures my be fabricated to contain ion exchange groups selective to an ion complex. Proper choice of substrate and monomer will provide selective ion exchange with differing physico and chemical properties. Grafting a selected monomer to the proper polymer will provide selective ion exchange with assured chemical protection of the substrate. Ion exchange systems utilizing radiation grafted structures have been fabricated to ''capture'' gold, silver and palladium from dilute solutions. Other ion exchange systems can feasibly be produced to remove other precious metals. Rotating Cathode Technology is used to recover the metals from their regenerating solutions are pure metal foil.

The high cost of constructing mineral processing plants in remote locations warrants a close examination of the alternatives available for reducing the amount of on-site construction work. Among the alternatives are portable process plants, modular design and barge mounted plants. Each alternative has certain advantages as well as limitations depending upon specific conditions. On the basis of practical experience and engineering analysis, the paper examines the potential benefits to be realized by these techniques and summarizes the conditions required to obtain them. The potential savings indicated by such studies should encourage consideration of innovative design features for new plants located in remote areas.

When we apply the Au nanoparticle superlattices to the future nanooptical and nanoelectronic devices, the control of not only the particle size but also the interparticle spacing and symmetry of superlattice are the essential problems to be overcome. First, we developed a novel synthetic procedure to precisely control the particle size of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticles in the range from 1.5 to 9.7 nm by the heat-treatment of the small Au nanoparticles in the solid state. Absorption and nonlinear optical properties of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticle superlattices were then elucidated. On the other hand, the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) 2D superlattices of small Au nanoparticles with the interparticle spacings from 1.9 to 3.6 nm were successfully prepared by using newly-synthesized ligand for single electron tunneling devices. Finally, various symmetric superlattices, such as chain (2-fold), quasi-honeycomb (3-fold), square (4-fold), etc., of Au nanoparticles could be produced by making use of interligand interactions or some templates.

Deep mining requires innovative approaches in ground control technology and the search for new ground support materials including backfill. There is a need to look at mine waste materials that may be available in deep mines to assess their suitability for use as composite backfill. Composite materials are widely used in all areas of engineering because of their unique and often superior structural properties compared to those of the singular constituent materials. Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest towards the investigation and use of various types of composite backfill materials as special applications fill in mines. A research project is being conducted at CANMET- Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories, Natural Resources Canada, to investigate the properties of potential ground support materials for use in deep mines. As part of this investigation, composite backfill materials were prepared by combining waste rock aggregates and mill tailings in various ratios, to determine their optimal mix proportions for strength development. A few cemented rockfill and straight tailings paste backfill samples were also prepared and were used as controls for the study. Two sample sizes were used for the investigation in order to evaluate the scale effects on the material behaviour. A set of samples were cured at 44 EC to simulate the anticipated temperature conditions in deep mines. A second set of samples were cured at 23 EC to provide engineering reference data. The test results show that compared to either the cemented rockfill or the straight tailings pastefill material, the composite backfill samples were the strongest and stiffest of all the test materials investigated in this study. The composite backfill samples also produced the lowest void ratio and porosity values compared to the cemented rockfill and the straight tailings backfill material. This paper will present the results of the laboratory investigations to date. It will also outline the on-going work at CANMET - Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories to further assess the ground support potential and viability of using composite fills in deep mines.

"Abstract- This paper discusses what appears to be a flaw in the current belief, widely held within the gold mining industry and investment community, that the creation of ever-larger gold mining companies is desirable for mining companies and investors alike. The basis of the flaw is in the underlying assumption that very large gold producers can discover or acquire new gold deposits of the size necessary to replace extracted reserves on a year-on-year basis over the intermediate to long term (i.e., five to ten years and longer). As it will be noted in this paper, deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are relatively few in number. Although discoveries of new gold deposits continue to be made, they are predominantly in the 0.5 to 2.0 million ounce range. Data represented here suggest that, although gold production from individual VLGPs continues to increase, the change is due to merging or acquiring other companies or projects with similar reserve life profiles. Therefore, the reserve life profiles of VLGPs have remained flat or have decreased.The paper will note recent changes in the industry and the remarkable increase in gold production reported by individual mining companies over the past several years. It will provide an overview of the geographical and geological distribution of known gold deposits and the range of deposit sizes. Finally, the paper will discuss the challenges that face large gold producers in replenishing their reserves that are being depleted at an ever-increasing rate. La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. La Mine Mouska exploite depuis deux ans certains blocs de réserve à l?aide de la méthode long trou. Même si, à priori, la méthode long trou semble rentable, le contrôle de la dilution ainsi que le respect d?un échéancier serré s?avèrent primordiaux afin que cette méthode d?exploitation puisse être justifiable économiquement. La présentation suivante fera la comparaison économique entre cette méthode et celle de chambre-magasin.
