Almost all industrial products, such as buildings, cars, plastics, railways, radio and television sets, computers, and others are made from materials extracted from the Earth. Earth is main resource of energy and up to now; the energy has been derived mainly from natural resources. Mining industry has significant influence to the nature, sometimes evokes a devastation of nature. On the other hand we have got a lot of nice examples that good preparation, sensitive mining practice and consistent reclamation can minimise the negative effects. All the mentioned problems calls for effective tools for mine design, mine operation and mine reclamation. Third millennium brings next challenge given by advances in information and communication technology. The development of very sophisticated software tools provides to technical systems some features of autonomous æthinkingÆ and intelligent behaviour. We can find large effort and a lot of scientific papers reflecting last advancement in science and technology and providing inspiration for new mining technology of third millennium called Intelligent Mine. Some aspects related to creation and utilisation of æIntelligent ModelsÆ as a background of æIntelligent MineÆ are presented and discussed in this paper.

The use of the heavy media cyclone (HMC) Separation process for the treatment of ores in a particular size range is comparatively new to Australia. The paper describes briefly the principles of HMC operation. Reference is made to early development work, the pilot plant trials and the acceptance of the technique as a mineral dressing process. The Mitchell Cotts pilot plant at Amdel is described briefly and the results of test work on this unit for the processing of a wide variety of ores and ore types are given. Comments are made on the ob- jectives aimed at in the investigation and results are discussed with particular reference to behaviourial differences between ore types. The process is easy to operate, possesses a high capacity-to-unit-size rating and is capable of a high degree of flexibility. Further developments such as specially prepared and graded media for specific applications, automatic media density control and regulation of media consistency by the use of surface ac- tive agents and polymers have increased versa- tility and sensitivity of control to the point where products differing by as little as 0.02 of a specific gravity unit can now be separated with ease.

The use of mercury for amalgamation has been an integral part of the small-scale gold mining industry in developing countries owing to its low investment cost, simplicity of the technique and high gold recovery. However, its impact on health and environmental hazards have not been given the attention they deserve. In spite of the growing awareness and concerns over the mercury pollution problem by regul-atory authorities, precautionary measures such as bans on the use of mercury in some countries have been largely ineffective.This paper first reviews some of the mechanisms of mercury poll-ution, and mercury toxicity which varies according to its oxidation state. It then describes how mercury released to the atmosphere would go through the "Mercury Cycle". Compar-isons have also been made with previously measured mercury levels in small scale Papua New Guinean miners with their counterparts in other developing countries.

Coal water mixture (CWM) is a mix of finely ground coal with water and a small amount of chemicals. It is a new way of transporting and handling coal. CWM can be transported, stored and burned like fuel oil in steam generating boilers. It also has some environmental advantages over both oil and bulk coal. A group comprising Ube Industries Limited, Nissho Iwai Corporation (both from Japan) and Coal & Allied Industries Limited has been working in Japan and Australia since 1987 on a joint feasibility study into the production, transport and marketing of CWM from Australia to Japan. The group has been studying the development of a large-scale CWM plant on Kooragang Island at the mouth of the Hunter River at Newcastle, NSW. The project concepts and engineering plans for the CWM plant are well advanced and other studies related to the project are continuing.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising process for obtai- ning energy from coal, which is either unmineable with current mining techno- logy or uneconomic to recover, using conventional methods, in the present energy market situation. There are several coal fields, which could become new coal reserves, if the UCG process were successfully applied. In the 1960's Japanese researchers made a number of basic studies and field tests into UCG, although not all of them produced favourable results. This paper reviews Japanese research on UCG. This includs basic studies into coal gasification using a small, tube reactor fed by air and oxygen, and also large scale model stu- dies(reactor size of 8.Om x 2.4m x 1.5 m). Field test results from Akabira colliery in Hokkaido and a feasibility study of power generation using UCG from a coal field in Hokkaido are also Presented.

The principles and practical applications of the Mogensen Sizer are examined, with particular reference to the experiences at Coal Cliff Mine, New South Wales. The Mogensen Sizer has proven to be a worthwhile alternative to conventional screening. It has the flexibility and capacity to offer a useful sizing tool, particularly in areas of confined space. It is simile in design and 1 in construction.

The Silver Swan nickel mine is located at the Black Swan Nickel Project, 53 km north east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The Silver Swan orebody is a massive sulphide nickel deposit dipping 70¦ east with an average in situ grade of 14 per cent. Mining of the massive orebody is by Mechanised Ramp Cut and Fill (MRCF). A mining recovery of 98 per cent and minimising dilution are primary goals in extracting the high-grade ore. Placing a distinguishable marker bed (working platform) on rock fill was identified as a key method to achieving these goals. Gravel from a pit located onsite was considered the most suitable material for the marker beds. Research undertaken to design the marker beds using the gravel revealed conventional methods used in mining would not suffice, but that road stabilisation methods could be a viable alternative. Trials used a road recycler to mix cement and gravel in situ and several test beds were constructed on the surface to determine the final design. The trials attempted to replicate a marker bedÆs life cycle of construction and placement and mucking of ore from the marker bed. Testing the marker bed for strength for use as a working platform was completed using a Clegg Hammer; good correlation to a Clegg Impact Value and the compressive strength of the stabilised gravel was found. This paper describes the use of a road stabilisation machine, tests conducted, monitoring and marker bed design and discusses underground placement of the marker bed and its performance.

Otago Schist and Klondike Schist are two Paleozoic-Mesozoic metamorphic belts on the circum-Pacific margin in which there has been a long history of abundant alluvial gold mining, but only minor hard-rock gold mining.   Modern exploration for hard-rock gold is ongoing in both belts, and the active Macraes mine in Otago (>2 Moz production) highlights the hard-rock potential of the geological setting of these belts. Hard-rock gold mineralisation in both belts formed in the latter stages of schist exhumation, after rocks were subjected to major regional ductile folding and then uplifted through the brittle-ductile transition. The majority of known hard-rock gold-bearing systems in both belts consist of well-defined, but generally discontinuous, vein swarms. Most Otago veins are hosted in steeply dipping post-metamorphic normal faults and fractures. However, the Macraes mine is hosted by a late-metamorphic shear zone, and much ore is sulphide-impregnated auriferous schist. Goldbearing veins in the Klondike schist are hosted primarily in extensional sites associated with post-metamorphic compressional structures. Some disseminated sulphide mineralisation is associated with Klondike veins and this is important as it extends the exploration target for these veins. No foliation-parallel late metamorphic mineralisation has been identified in the Klondike but exposure is relatively poor compared with Otago and both schist belts are highly prospective for deposits of this type.

Pressures are foreseen for departments of metallurgy to make. radical changes in their undergraduate curricula. The curricula need to be made more attractive to high'school students in -order to increase the number of enrolled students. The distinctive character of extractive metallurgy needs to be emphasised to resist encroachment by chemical engineering. There should be content relevant to each of the professional functions and, particularly, to' society's broad expectations of metallurgists. Content, teaching methods, etc. need to be acceptable to women, mature-age -students, Aboriginals, and other groups, as well as young white males. Learning experiences should be negotiable by the students in response to the advent of learning packages delivered via personal computers. All of these needs could be satisfied by a radical change. in attitudes and objectives during the design; implementation and evaluation stages of . a new type of curriculum, using a wide range of problem-based learning experiences..

The Kelian gold mine which was developed in East Kalimantan Indonesia in 1990 - 1992 is scheduled to complete mining and processing operations in 2004. This will have a major impact on the neighbouring communities who have benefited from the jobs, economic activity and infrastructure development which has been generated by the mine. Currently, there are no formal regulations or standards specifying the procedures for relinquishment of mining leases in Indonesia. Furthermore, a move towards regional autonomy, providing greater authority and responsibility to local (regional) areas, has recently been implemented in Indonesia and limited capacity exists in the new regional governments. Consequently, in October 2000, Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM) initiated a partnership with the local community and government to explore sustainable post-closure options for the mine site and community development programs. The Kelian mine closure strategy seeks full involvement of all stakeholders through the Kelian Mine Closure Steering Committee (MCSC) in the development of sustainable solutions which will enable communities to secure long-term benefits and minimise post-closure risks from the KEM operations. This organisation, jointly chaired by the Head (Bupati) of the regional West Kutai government and the KEM President Director, with representatives from the local communities, governments and NGOs, has developed a Charter, a website and evaluation criteria to ensure accountability and transparency. There are four technical working groups, consisting of representatives from the mine, local community leaders, NGOs, Universities, Local, Provincial and Central Government Departments, which report to the Steering Committee. These working groups have researched, developed and recommended sustainable options to the Steering Committee. The MCSC has met quarterly to examine options in accordance with the criteria set out in the Charter and has endorsed sustainable solutions which have support from Government, Community and the mine. This paper describes the closure risks, sustainable outcomes derived through the Kelian mine closure steering committee process and outlines the methodologies used to develop and endorse sustainable solutions in a society with limited capacity undergoing enormous change and uncertainty.

At the Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden sulfide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. The tailings area has been remediated by applying a combination of till cover and flooding. A new method that has been applied to parts of the tailings area is to raise the groundwater table to saturate the tailings. By increasing pH by liming, thereby reducing metal mobility, a water-covered downstream impoundment is functioning as a trap for metals released from the till-covered impoundments upstream. In this paper the efficiency of the system approach used at Kristineberg is evaluated. Progressive changes of water quality from groundwater in the upstream till-covered impoundments via surface streams within the pond system to the water in the flooded downstream pond and its outlet are described. The results show that the system approach used in the design of the remediation programme of the tailings works as planned. The sulfide oxidation rate has decreased in the till-covered impoundments, and, as predicted, there is an out-flush of old weathering products which will continue for at least five years before equilibrium is reached. The groundwater in the till-covered impoundments has high concentrations of Fe, S, Mg and Zn, but the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Cd and Pb are much lower than before the till cover was applied. The limed pond is an efficient metal trap, with concentrations as high as 2.76 per cent Zn and 0.28 per cent Cu in the calcite-gypsum sludge developed on the tailings. The outlet from the flooded pond, and thus from the whole mining area, releases small amounts of metals to the recipient in comparison to the amounts that are in movement within the mining area. During the period May to November, 13 kg dissolved Zn and 111 kg particulate Zn was released to the recipient, whereas a total of 27 000 kg was transported by surface water within the impoundment system during the same period. The results from Kristineberg show that when planning remediation of complex mining areas, it is useful to adopt a system approach in which different methods are used on different parts of the area along the flow path of the drainage water, whereas flooding of the downstream pond is the key to the performance of the entire system.

In contrast to the '50s and '60s, the period of the '80s and '90s seems likely to have low growth in demand but much greater levels of technological change. In such a climate there will be pressure on costs, productivity will continue to rise and competitiveness will be closely associated with maintenance of the most effective technology. The penalties for inappropriate investments, whether short sighted or mistakenly based on a particular view of the future, will be greatly enhanced. Accordingly, there will be a need for significantly improved anticipation of technical change and thus for better planning. Study of the funding and direction of the world's R&D effort can provide a useful input to the planning processes within industries and individual firms. Such a study also suggests some insights into the characteristics of those countries which have achieved substantial growth and high standards of living over the past two decades. These characteristics may offer significant reminders for our own development. The particular implications for the Australian minerals industry include the need for direction that is sensitive to changing market requirements and customer practice. This is not simply "more of the same." In particular it appears essential for both basic and applied R&D to provide a sound basis for the purchase and ongoing development of the new technology required to achieve international Competitiveness.

The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects. In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. A formalised approach to risk management has been regulated in the United Kingdom (UK) since the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM) came into force in 1995. These regulations have recently been revised in 2007. In response to a series of significant claims around the world the UK insurance industry published a code of practice for risk management of tunnels in 2003, and that was followed by an international version in 2006. Probably one of the main contributions of this new approach is the recognition that health and safety risks can best be addressed early in the process, initially by the owner and then by the designers. One of the aims is to achieve elimination of risks by good design. The advantage of a risk-based approach to tunnel design is that all risks are considered explicitly, and any residual risks in the design are communicated clearly to the construction team. This paper looks at the implementation of this formalised approach to risk management with reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. The design has been undertaken in accordance with the requirements of the CDM regulations, and also in compliance with the Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works in the UK. An outline of the risk-based design process used is provided, including examples.

"Geometallurgical variables often cause problems to conventional geostatistical workflows. There are many variables; some are compositional and some are non-additive. They often show: complex multivariate relationships undersampling relative to conventional grade variables unequal sampling; that is, all variables are not available at all data locations.A variety of approaches have been developed over the years, but geostatisticians remain mostly focused on modelling rock types and a few grade variables with an abundance of data. The problems are reviewed and a chained workflow is presented where appropriate techniques are employed in sequence to permit reliable spatial prediction of geometallurgical variables. The spatial models may be used to assess the value of additional data, for prediction of process performance, for improved mine planning and other optimisation tasks. The chained workflow will include data transformations such as ratios and normal scores that make the variables amenable to geostatistical modelling. Data imputation techniques to account for missing values are considered with special consideration to spatial correlation with the available data. Decorrelation techniques such as the principal components, min/max autocorrelation factors and projection pursuit multivariate transformation are employed to manage massively multivariate modelling. Full distribution modelling must be considered to avoid biases in the prediction of non-additive variables. The post-processing of geometallurgical models must be streamlined for robustness and efficiency. The precise workflow varies according to the specific purpose of the study. The Tennant Creek goldfield is one of the largest gold producing districts in Australia, and major deposits, including Gecko, Juno, Orlando, Peko, Warrego, Nobles Nob, Golden Forty, Argo, TC 8 and White Devil have produced more than four million ounces of gold over the past two decades. Gold-copper-bismuth mineralisation at Tennant Creek occurs in lenticular, ellipsoidal or pipe-like bodies of magnetite-hematite ironstones which are hosted in turbiditic sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic age (Large, 1975; Wedekind, Large and Williams, 1989; Le Messurier, Williams and Blake, 1990; Morrison, Donnellan and Hussey, 1992).

There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.
