There has been a reduction in overall workforce in the mining industry during the current downturn; a corresponding reduction in fatalities and high potential incidents (HPIs) has not been observed. The same contributing factors can be seen in the vast majority of these incidents. These include inadequate supervision and lack of adequate risk assessment. How management structures, trains and leads an operation can have a great impact on eliminating these factors and reducing the risk of fatalities and HPIs.Contractors now account for 41 per cent of full-time equivalent employees in the Queensland mining workforce, and are disproportionately represented in the majority of fatalities and HPIs. Having a clear strategy for how contractors are integrated into the workforce is crucial. This talk will include a discussion of the data as collected in the Department of Mines and Natural Resources department database, and offer solutions based on this data.CITATION:LaBranche, N and Callinan, G, 2016. The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

Process mineralogy is an inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and mineral processing. As a predicting and trouble-shooting tool, process mineralogy helps address all mineralogical issues and problems related to mineral processing. It provides useful information on process design and optimisation, flow sheet development and cost reduction. As more and more complex and refractory ores are being discovered and processed, it is believed that process mineralogy will gain more attention and play a more important role in process design and optimisation. This paper will first discuss the scope of process mineralogy and mineralogical factors that may affect mineral processing of various ores, and then focuses on the application of process mineralogy in process design and optimisation through case studies.

A critical step in open cut coal mining is clean removal of the overburden. This is usually achieved by drilling, blasting and digging. A key part of this process being successful is to stop drilling at the correct blast ‘stand-off distance’. The stand-off distance is the distance between the base of the drilled blasthole and the top of the coal horizon to be mined. Having this correct provides a protective cap of rock above the coal horizon so that the blast will fracture all the overburden without damaging the coal horizon or mixing it with the overburden. Drilling beyond the correct stand-off distance causes the blast to continue into the coal horizon, damaging it and mixing it with the overburden, leading to significant losses of coal product. Conversely, drilling short of the correct stand-off distance results in additional work to remove the intact overburden.

A novel explosive formulation that substitutes the use of ammonium nitrate (AN) with hydrogen peroxide (HP) as the main oxidising agent has been developed and tested as part of an Australian Coal Industry Research Program (ACARP) project. The main objective was to provide a step-change solution that has the potential to completely eliminate NOx fumes in blasting. The development of this HP/fuel-based explosive started with a comprehensive detonation characterisation program, consisting of unconfined velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements of samples at different diameters, densities and void sensitisation techniques. VOD results showed that the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures behaved similarly to non-ideal commercial explosives; in that way mixtures could be tailored to achieve specific detonation performance targets. The next stage of testing in this development involved preliminary confined tests to evaluate the rock breakage potential of the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. Fully instrumented single-hole tests were conducted in a limestone quarry. Results from these preliminary trials confirmed the rock breakage performance of HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. The confined VOD measured in one of the tests was 5100 m/s in a 102 mm diameter blasthole at a density of 0.96 g/ml. The corresponding borehole pressure measurement of this HP charge was 2.61 GPa with a detonation temperature of 2921°C. Based on near-field accelerations, both HP and ANFO charges displayed similar attenuation characteristics in the test conditions. Post-blast observations indicated that the breakage performance of the HP mixtures clearly reflected the in-hole detonation performance measurements obtained, confirming the ability of these explosive mixtures to both fragment and effectively displace the rock mass under evaluation. Further research work continues with the future commissioning of a prototype mixing and delivery unit, the successful completion and analysis of data from multiple-hole trials, and further characterisation work associated with product stability, reliability and performance under different geotechnical conditions.CITATION:Onederra, I and Araos, M, 2015. Recent research publications in extractive metallurgy were analysed for their stated and self-evident objectives. Over 100 different objectives (not specific to a metal or unit operation) were identified. These were divided into groups of economic, environmental, professional and fundamental significance. Comparisons were made of the objectives adopted in universities, industry and national research organisations. The most common primary and secondary objectives (by a large margin) were "to develop a new process (different chemistry)" and "to determine the effects of variables on a process" respectively. It was concluded that, overall, recent research has been dominated by commercial objectives. Objectives related to thermodynamics and kinetics have been the most common of the fundamental sort. Those related to professional methods in general, sensors and process dynamics, among others, have been largely neglected.

The Junction Reefs gold bearing deposit is situated on the Lyndhurst Mining Field in mid-west New South Wales. It is located within a triangle of three country towns namely, Blayney, Cowra and Canowindra, all three townships are approximately 25 km from the current operational mining leases. The district is well developed, having been settled for more than a cen- tury. However, being close to the Cities of Orange and Bathurst it is real- lised, instantly, that mining leases have been pegged, in this area, almost boundary to boundary. The lease patterns are, with few exceptions, those which had been estab- lished more than seventy-five years ago. These types of lease patterns may not assist the proper exploitation of a large district where there have been many discoveries of gold, copper and other metals.

QueenslandÆs new safety legislation for metalliferous and coal mining (Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, together with the Regulations) came into effect on 16 March 2001. The legislation places clear obligations on mine owners, operators and workers to have a safe place of work and to manage risks to safety and health. It also places obligations on contractors, designers and providers of services. The legislation is non-prescriptive in that it states what outcomes must be achieved and not what must be done. The key issue is that the risk of injury to people must be at an acceptable level. The legislation creates a Mines Inspectorate with powers of inspection and audit of mines, their safety management systems and the management of risks. Auditing of the risk management process is carried out against standard risk management techniques and directives for corrective action may be issued when audits reveal non-compliance or unacceptable levels of risk.

It is believed that disc cutter shape affects rock fracture and therefore cutter performance and cutter life. However, the current generation of disc cutters is made of hardened steel and these cutters wear rapidly and consequently they are unable to maintain their original shape in strong and abrasive rock. This wear problem could be reduced if the cutter was made from a harder material. Unfortunately as material hardness increases so does the propensity for brittle failure. In this study the optimum cutter shapes were identified by studying the mechanics of rock/tool interaction. The results showed that bevel and wedge cutters are better than cutters with dome and flat edges. A new cutter was designed, based on this result, using a harder material to increase the life by a factor of 20.

The highest grades of the Porgera gold deposit, Papua New Guinea, are contained in Zone 7 due to the presence of the Roamane fault, which acted as channelway of the gold-bearing fluids. Prior to the development and underground mining of this fault-controlled high-grade zone it was critical to provide grade estimates of relatively small mining units, and of the proportion of mining units above cutoff. To be applicable to Zone 7 of Porgera a grade estimation method should account for the following:1. the highly skewed and apparently lognormal distribution of the grades,2. the rapid drop off of the local mean grade and the variance as the distance to the Roamane fault increases,3. the presence of high grade pockets in the footwall, away from that fault, and4. the existence of variograms for the logs with sills parallel to the fault and without sills perpendicular to it.

An important problem in open pit mine planning is that of detennining the optimum ultimate pit limits of the mine. These limits are that contour which is the result of extracting the volume of material which provides the total maximum profit while satisfying certain practical operational requirements such as safe wall slopes. The determination of the optimum pit contour provides information that is essential in the evaluation of the economic potential of the mineral deposit. A number of optimisation techniques are available for determining this contour with the Lerchs-Grossman and the Network Flow methods being the most favoured. Unfortunately, direct application of these techniques to large ore-bodies may cause considerable difficulties because of the computational time and storage requirements. In this paper, we present a strategy for resolving these problems, and the associated pit design software PITOPTIM (incorporating a fast network flow technique) and a data reducer, BOUND. The results presented highlight the speed and power of the software package rivalling the popular Lerchs-Grossman technique. An application of the software for a sensitivity analysis is also presented and discussed.

Investigation of a water inflow into Wongawilli Mine in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales included algal analysis. The determination of algae in the water suggested an external water source. An alternative hypothesis proposed that algae are inherent in a coal mine environment. Investigations to determine the validity of these hypotheses and provide information on the viability and longevity of algae under adverse conditions were conducted in the mine and the laboratory. Results indicated that a mine environment is not natural to algae and is not conducive to their growth. These findings support the hypothesis of introduction of surface water to the mine workings. They indicate that, in the absence of other available techniques, algae can be an effective tracer for use in the determination of a water source.

Design of the new cemented hydraulic fill plant was based mainly on experience with a succession of previous fill plants. Two stage cycloning of combined concentrator tailings was introduced. Design of the two stage cyclone configuration was assisted by computer simulation of cyclone performance. Cementing additives, namely Portland cement and ground copper reverberatory furnace slag, drawn from bulk storage, are pre-slurried prior to mixing with hydraulic fill. Quality control of fill being sent under- ground is achieved by a series of automatic control loops. Plant instrumentation was given prime consideration during the design phase. Inventory checks of all mass flow metering equipment are made at regular intervals. Fill is pumped to boreholes at several locations. Details of the equipment and operating procedures for the plant are Discussed.

The past 20 years have seen the replacement of hydraulic control of longwall mining systems by the neater. smaller and better controlled electronic units.Early problems of moisture and other effects on reliability were overcome to see electronically controlled supports chosen for Corrimal Colliery ten years ago. Lessons from Corrimal and elsewhere, with following improvements and sophistication led to wider use as exemplified by Meco and other electronically controlled supports used in more recent installations in New South Wales, Queensland, USA and Czechoslovakia of the total of over 80 electronically controlled support installations worldwide in the past decade. Present work is toward a fully "integrated face" of British Coal by 1993, incorporating the Meco automatic face straightening system already due for practical use in the UK later this year. However the manless face still appears to be some way off although the present minimum crews and close monitoring, including early warning, are promising stages.

Sheet flotation is a new two dimensional column flotation cell that produces continuous spectrum of products. Analogous to a shaking table in its performance and analysis, sheet flotation is a sheet of bubbles rising through packing contained between two walls. Feed enters the sheet at the lower left and the product exit along the top and right edges. Iligh grade materials exit at the top left, middlings exit at the top right comer and low grade waste materials exit at the bottom right. As in the case of a shaking table, two motions are required: up and right. Bubbles furnish the upwards movement for hydrophobic particles, slanted packing the rightward movement for hydrophilic particles. The sheet flotation cells is analysed as a 40 x 40 array of simple cells. In practice, 1000 x 1000 arrays of simple cells may be expected. With larger arrays, excellent separations may be expected. The total system includes nine ajor subsystems - Geology and Reserves, Meth- ne Generator, Roof Support, Subsidence, Pro- uction, Rail Haulage, Cost, Water Generator, nd Ventilation. The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Natural gas is a comparatively new fuel in Australia. It was first used in small quantities in Queensland in 1965, but it was not until 1969 that natural gas reached the capital cities Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide in that order; then in 1971 it reached Perth. By the mid seventies, natural gas had secured a significant proportion of the energy markets in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia and in 1976 supply commenced in Sydney. In that year - 1976 - gas supplied about 12.5% of the total demand for primary energy in Australia excluding transport. In the current financial year - 1981/82 - natural gas is expected to supply nearly 19% of the market and forecasts for 1990 range up to 25%. From a starting point in the late 1960's when manufactured gas supplied a small but important proportion of the non-transport energy market - less than 3% - we have exper- ienced an average growth of nearly 24% per annum up to the present time.

Late Palaeozoic and Late Mesozoic phases of widespread overprinting have obliterated most of the primary magnetization signature of the Tasman Fold Belt. Palaeomagnetic programs of a regional extent offer best prospects for identification and interpretation of such secondary magnetizations and for isolation of any remaining primary magnetization. In 1983 the BMR initiated a regionally oriented palaeomagnetic study of the Tasman Fold Belt to obtain palaeomagnetic constraints on the tectogenesis of the fold belt. Particular attention is being paid to the analysis of possible differential movements between suspect or- tectonostratigraphic terranes within the Tasman Fold Belt and the respect to cratonic Australia. Work has concentrated so far on the Cowra Trough-Molong High region of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the New England region. Pilot sampling has been carried out in the Gympie region. In addition Palaeozoic sequences are being studied from the Amadeus Basin and the Ngalia Basin to refine the palaeomagnetic reference frame of cratonic Australia.
