The mill area of PT Freeport Indonesia is located in a valley surrounded by steep natural slope, characterised by extreme topography with mountains rising to above 4500 m within 100 km from the seashore. The valleys are deeply embedded into the mountainous terrain and bordered by steep natural slopes. Vertical or overhanging lime walls are interrupted by steep vegetated screen sections containing accumulated loose material from weathering processes and ancient rock falls and/or debris flows/avalanches. The climate can be best described as alpine subtropical with an accumulated rainfall of more than 5000 mm per year. Occasional snowfalls and superficial freezing above 4000 m elevation leads to heavy weathering of the superficial rock layers and along open joints and fractures. The mill area is a crucial and strategic infrastructure for the entire mining operation which is best characterised as a high density industrial area with facilities including water tanks, power generators, crusher, and concentrating facilities including office buildings and workshops as well as access tracks to the underground mining blocks. Considering the local topography, the restricted space conditions and the number of technical installations, the facilities are likely to be affected and highly vulnerable to rock fall from the surrounding slopes. In order to minimise the rock fall hazard three rock fence barriers area were constructed at the mill area. The 7.5 rock fence barriers were designed with the maximum capacity of 5000 kJ. These are the largest capacity of rock fall barriers ever constructed in Indonesia. The total length of the barriers for the three locations was 126 m. The biggest challenge of this project was the construction of the barrier at West Gulley, which was constructed at 300 m above ground level. For this site, construction access was undertaken using helicopter. This presentation discusses the design of the mitigation structures as well as the construction approach and stages of the barriers. Please note: This paper is abstract only.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has become an important tool for understanding the nano- to molecular scale mechanisms predominant in multiphase systems. In flotation research, the use of AFM holds promise for unlocking and establishing fundamental mechanisms, ultimately leading to significant advances in process performance. From measuring and characterising surface forces, the structure of molecules at interfaces, and nanoscale features on flotation media, AFM is a powerful tool that has only begun to impact flotation research. Highlights of advances made in the utilisation of AFM for flotation research at the University of Florida are given with an emphasis on interpreting the mechanisms behind calcium activation in phosphate flotation and the impact of nanoscale asperities on collector-born surface hydrophobicity.

Contour banks and waterways are standard soil conservation measures to assist farmers reduce the impact of gully erosion on sloping cropping land by reducing the slope length to the interval between the banks. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) developed by the USA Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in 1930s predicts the long-term average annual soil loss (A).The equation is the product of the rainfall erosivity factor (R), the soil erodibility factor (K), the topographic factors of slope length and angle (L and S) and the cropping management factors (C and P). Contour banks reduce the slope length (L) only.Contour banks are a constructed earth embankment, incorporating a channel on the upslope side, typically traversing a slope on or close to the contour to control and/or prevent the erosion of that slope. The banks are also referred to as graded banks, terraces, or bunds (DSITI 2015). Contour banks are either broad based or narrow based. Broad based banks allow the passage of the machinery over the banks whilst narrow based bank batters are too steep preventing the passage of machinery. Waterways are a stable, longitudinally sloping water disposal area of sufficient capacity used to discharge surplus runoff from the contour bank and to allow it to flow to a lower level without causing erosion (DSITI 2015).The mining industry must decide what the role for contour banks and waterways is in each operation’s rehabilitation and closure plan.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2018. The reasons for choosing autogenous grinding for the new Warrego concentrator of Peko Mines N.L. are discussed and the ores to be treated in the concentrator are described. The mill was designed on the basis of pilot tests carried out at Cobar and the performance of the mill has been most satisfactory both in its metallurgical and mechanical aspects. An empirical technique has been developed to predict mill performance for change in feed rate or feed size and a mathematical model of the mill is being developed for simulation and control work. The weight and size distribution of the mill load was determined at one set of operating conditions for use in the mill model.

The uncertainty of geomaterials properties is commonly encountered in resource engineering applications, especially in mining engineering where the rock mass texture, joints, fractures and damage zones can impose the mining method and operation cycles. In the present research work, we focus on the elastic properties of rock masses. We use stochastic numerical simulation of fractured rock masses to estimate their Young moduli. The procedure starts with field mapping campaigns which are conducted to evaluate the locations, dip angles, strike and trace lengths of pre-existing fractures. We develop statistical law parameters of the natural fracture network to represent the weakness patterns. In addition, we use HLA-Dissim, a recently developed and validated Matlab program, to simulate the propagation of monochromatic longitudinal waves and derive the equivalent elastic modulus of fractured rock masses. Such procedure applies within a simulation domain, which is greater than an Elementary Representative Volume.At a second stage, we conduct finite element simulations to validate the previous approach. The matrix and the actual fractures zones are reproduced in the model to mimic the natural set-up. The block is excited on particular positions and its response is evaluated on predefined spots. Real field rock fracture mapping data and monitored single-hole blast induced vibrations are used to validate the theoretical and numerical approaches discussed herein. Comparison between the simulated and measured vibration records shows a great agreement which confirms that the proposed methodology has a full potential to predict and optimise multihole/multidelay blast-induced vibrations.CITATION:Hamdi, E and Karrech, A, 2015. Recent well-publicised problems with the start-up of new mining projects have continued to feed the perception that the mining business in general and Ore Reserves in particular are a poor risk. New mines commonly experience difficulties when the true variability of ore characteristics becomes apparent during commissioning. At this critical stage, the impact of lower metal recovery, reduced throughput or increased consumption of reagents and energy can have a catastrophic effect on economic returns, as illustrated by the premature closure of some operations. There appear to be several common reasons contributing to the poor performance of mining projects, of which three are examined here: lack of early risk assessment before feasibility studies are started, inadequate sampling for metallurgical test work and variability of the run-of-mine (ROM) ore. An underlying feature of these issues is the lack of effective interaction between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists/ process engineers. Geologists need to be more aware of ore processing issues and the range of characteristics that need to be considered as part of the resource estimate. Metallurgists need a greater understanding of the variability of the run of mine ore in terms of all the characteristics that influence the design and operation of the plant. Mining engineers need to determine the short-term variability of the ore in the mine schedule, so that there is confidence that the quality of the run-of-mine ore will be within the design specifications of the plant. A substantial overlap between these disciplines and sharing of areas of responsibility is necessary if these and other technical problems are to be better understood, production estimates are to be improved and commercial risks are to be reduced. Although the JORC Code (1999) provides guidelines for reporting all the issues that are material to an Ore Reserve estimate, some issues are rarely fully addressed in Ore Reserve reports. In particular there is no formal requirement for a metallurgist to assure his or herself of the appropriateness of the Ore Reserve classification. Consequently the level of uncertainty related to recovered grade and ore processing characteristics may be understated. It is suggested that to meet the concerns of bodies funding new mineral developments a stronger multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of mineral deposits and reporting of Ore Reserves is required. The culmination of this approach would be the formal requirement for a geologist, mining engineer and a metallurgist to co-sign Ore Reserve reports.

Prospecting ice on the Moon necessitates drilling systems to obtain subsurface samples and measure the composition of ice deposits. Landers and rovers equipped with drilling equipment are essential for analysing ice and subsurface resources located at the Moon’s poles. These devices must be small, lightweight, low-power, highly efficient, and high-performance units to function properly in the extreme conditions of the lunar environment. Researchers have developed a prototype drilling apparatus capable of operating in atmospheric and cold environments. A newly developed drilling system in Korea, capable of performing not only sampling but also subsurface investigation, is introduced.

Failings di,posal presents many challenges at metal mines in Peru where the extreme relief yields very little useable land area. These challenges are amplified by other hazards such as the high seismic environment, high rainfall, and frequent debris torrents down the steep hillsides. As a result many mining operations have resorted to in-river disposal of mill tailings. This paper presents a case history of one underground metal mine located in the high Andes mountains of Peru where in-river disposal of tailings has been used for some 30 years. The paper outlines a comprehensive engineering study that was aimed at increasing the utilisation of tailings disposal underground. The scope of this study included modifications to the grinding and flotation circuits to produce a high sulphide and low sulphide tailings for underground and surface disposal respectively: mapping and cataloguing of abandoned stopes for hackfilling: modifications to the existing backfill system to improve icliahility and throughput, and a preliminary evaluation of alternatives Such as silicated and paste fills.

The dilution of blasted ore with cemented backfill materials has been recognised as a significant factor influencing the economics of some underground metalliferous mining operations. Several mechanisms have been identified as possible causes of fill failures. The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of damage as the result of one mechanism, that of production blasting adjacent to bodies of cemented hydraulic fill (CHF). A vibration amplitude transfer function has been developed to model the transmission of blast vibrations from the source, through ore, across the ore to CHF interface and into the CHF mass. The model may be applied in the near field. The model has permitted estimation of vibration amplitude at a point in a CHF mass, to which damage criteria may be applied. A number of assumptions and simplifications have been made to render the problem relatively tractable. Ore and CHF material characteristics recorded by a number of authors were utilised to formulate preliminary damage estimations. A simple application of the amplitude transfer model indicated that a zone of plastically deformed CHF would be produced, and would extend to a distance of approximately 0.5 metres from the interface into the CHF. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted, that indicated that the zone of plastic deformation would be more extensive given appropriate conditions. Recommendations for further model development and future laboratory and field investigations have been made.

The selection of the mode of transport for moving bulk materials is never a simple task as there are various concerns/considerations applied to the selection of the most practical and cost-effective mode of transport to be used to move bulk materials. This paper examines various alternatives for moving ore from a mine at the top of a mountain to a process plant below (some 5000 m apart and a vertical drop of 650 m). The terrain of the mountain section of the route has added its own specific requirements, resulting in the final selection of a pipe conveyor for this application. The paper further addresses the final selection of hardware used in the implementation of the solution.

Rock masses when subjected to uniaxial or triaxial cyclic loading (eg in hydraulic running tunnels, during retrieval and injection of oil and gas from storage underground caverns and haulage roads), the material has a tendency to fail in fatigue. In order to design safe and reliable underground structures, the determination of brittleness under such loading conditions becomes a pre-requisite. Brittleness influences strongly the failure process and makes the rock mass behaviour complex under different tunnelling and mining activities. Brittleness Index is a term to quantify the brittleness feature of a specimen. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the brittleness of jointed specimens using different brittleness criteria. The joints of the model jointed specimens were oriented at an angle of θ=15° normal to the loading direction, each having three different JRC’s=2–4, 12–14 and 14–16. The specimens were tested under triaxial conditions in incremental complete cyclic test scheme performed at displacement-controlled mode. Different brittleness criteria were used ie stress-strain dependent brittleness index, Young Modulus approach and energy-balance based mechanism. It was observed that energy-balance based mechanism which consider the post failure behaviour is more descriptive to reflect the whole variation of brittleness from sheer brittleness to ductility.

The Port of Port Hedland is the largest bulk export terminal in the world and is one of Australia’s most important pieces of economic infrastructure. BHP is the largest Port user to support the export of iron ore products from mines located within the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA). BHP’s priority is the safety and well-being of its workforce and the communities where it operates. In a recent regulatory application to increase export capacity, BHP committed to the deployment of wind fences to reduce wind erosion from stockpiled ore. Wind erosion from stockpiles was identified through inverse modelling as the most significant dust source compared to other sources such as stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders and transfer stations. The primary cause of dust emissions from stockpiles is dust lift-off during high wind conditions. BHP proposed the installation of wind fences across its Port Hedland operations, targeted at reducing emissions from wind dependent sources, primarily stockpiles, by reducing the wind speed downwind of the wind fence. Modelling predicts that installation of the wind fence will significantly reduce emissions from stockpiles, particularly at BHP’s western operations (Finucane Island). To be effective in shielding stockyards and reducing wind speeds, the wind fences are located upwind and as close as practical to the open stockyards. BHP’s wind fence design incorporates learnings from other existing installations and has been tailored for Port Hedland’s cyclonic conditions. The wind fence will be higher than the stockpile height, with a mesh porosity of approximately 50 per cent. The mesh porosity allows some of the wind to pass through the mesh. This reduces the wind turbulence downstream of the wind fence, as opposed to a solid wind fence, which increases downwind turbulence, resulting in increased dust.

A century ago, new mines were often accompanied by smelters. In Australia, smelters were built at the Daydream mine near Broken Hill, at Kuridala and Mount Elliott near Mount Isa, Broken Hill, Mount Lyell, Mount Morgan, Mount Isa, and more recently at Tennant Creek, Kalgoorlie and Olympic Dam. Now the big miners eschew site-based processing in favour of shipping concentrate to smelters in Europe and Asia. As Chip Goodyear was in the process of vacating his leadership role at BHP Billiton, he was quoted as saying that BHP should concentrate on mining ore and leave æto others the skill set of processing that materialÆ. Yet there are times when on-site processing clearly makes sense. Few companies ship gold ore or concentrate to China for gold extraction. New smelters are being built in Zambia. Solvent-extraction and electrowinning plants frequently produce copper from oxide ores and concentrates while pressure leaching is increasingly being considered for copper sulfide ores. Some argue that on-site processing is best because the waste products can be returned to the ground from whence they came, avoiding potentially large disposal costs in more-populated areas. Copper treatment and refining charges will not remain at $45 per tonne and 4.5 cents per pound forever. This paper examines when it makes sense to use on-site pyro- or hydrometallurgical processes in todayÆs environment and comments on how current trends might alter the balance in future.

In recent years there has been a major change among mining companies in their mining methods. This has been driven by the need to increase shareholder value and optimising the value from an operation. With this understanding there has been a need for all producers to become more efficient in their mining processes. An analysis of the coal losses at Mount Thorley Operations indicated that the major losses were in the dragline section of the mine due to coal damage from throw blasting. This damage was evident after the removal of the overburden by the dragline.Coal and Allied Mount Thorley Mine in partnership with Orica Explosives developed a process to reduce the coal loss associated with the throw blasting of Mt Thorley. Orica provided its specialised knowledge and experience in the drilling and blasting area and combined this with the local mining knowledge and expertise of Mount Thorley Operations personnel to conduct the project. This partnership reduced coal loss in excess of 50 per cent whilst maintaining targeted dragline productivity.

The average installed refrigeration capacity on South African gold mines has increased by about eighteen per cent annually for the past 15 years; both the number of installations and their duties have increased. One consequence of these large refrigeration installations is that careful attention must be paid to the system for distributing cold water. In these distribution systems, devices which minimize the temperature rise of the water delivered to the underground workings and which also reduce the pumping requirements for returning the water back to surface are used. In this paper the suitability of these various devices are examined and with the aid of a specially developed computer program their optimum operating conditions are determined. In addition the optimum combination of surface and underground refrigeration plants is examined for a hypothetical mine at various depths and the importance of pump efficiency on total distribution costs is discussed.

Despite an increasing focus by media, communities and activists driving an elevated regulatory focus in Australia and indeed some other mining jurisdictions, the mining industry globally has had limited successful mine lease relinquishments and transfers to support a next land use.Critique from anti-mining lobbyists frequently uses the large estimates from historically abandoned mine sites to influence risk-averse regulatory reforms to improve environmental performance. The mine rehabilitation regulatory processes in Australia, and specifically in the State of Queensland, are thus largely in place to prevent mining operators from abandoning their obligations.Regulatory responses to the lack of mine rehabilitation and closure performance in the last five to ten years have primarily focussed on compliance and enforcement of rehabilitation conditions in environmental approvals. Additionally, financial assurance measures have been tightened to protect against abandonment of rehabilitation obligations by the Industry, including the Chain of Responsibility legislation (Queensland Government, 2016b) in April 2016, to hold to account those who have benefitted from mining and processing/refining projects, and then avoid their environmental obligations.CITATION:Swart, P B and Erskine, P D, 2018. The Eastern Distributor Tunnels - the first major road tunnel project in Australia - are the preferred solution to traffic congestion problems, when compared with alternatives, in this inner urban environment. This is because of the reduced impact on residential housing, the improvement of the existing environment, less restrictions on future developments, and a reduction in noise and pollution. Developments leading to a tunnelled solution, traffic needs and reasons for route location are discussed. Criteria for design of tunnel alignments and geometry are described, including the restraints imposed by surface connections on profiles and grades resulting in low rock cover at tunnel portals. The main geotechnical restraints are a major weathered dyke at the shallow large span underground fork and the weathered Ashfield Shale capping the Hawkesbury Sandstone at a portal. Rock cuttability and excavation methods are discussed. Roadheader machines are the most suitable for the varying shallow arched cross sections required and the tunnel lengths involved but the use of blasting in special situations cannot be ruled out. Initial support for the major tunnel lengths will be provided by rock reinforcement in conjunction with shotcrete. Steel ribs are proposed in areas of low cover and weak ground. Final support will comprise an insitu concrete lining. Construction concepts and special tunnelling methods required at the shallow underground forks and tunnels are described.

The Vanyukov Process is a high-intensity smelting system that has been proven over the last 20 years for various metallurgical operations including the smelting of copper, nickel, copper-zinc, antimony concentrates, municipal waste treatment and pig-iron production. Extensive pilot plant tests on copper and copper-nickel concentrates have provided information for the design of the commercial furnaces. The thermodynamic analysis, design idea and the data obtained from commercial furnaces have shown that Vanyukov Process would be the best choice to smelt copper-nickel and nickel sulphide concentrates as well as oxide nickel ores.
