This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. The determination of the "optimum pit limit" of a mine has long been considered as a fundamental problem of mine planning. A number of mathematical techniques have been proposed to solve this problem some of the more elaborate ones posing considerable computational difficulties for their implementation. Barnes and Johnson recently introduced "bounding techniques" to ease the computational effort required for determining the optimum pit. The aim of this paper is to point out and correct some errors in their techniques. A presentation of a general bounding algorithm is given.

IncoÆs Clarabelle mill currently processes ores from eight mines in the Sudbury basin area in Ontario, Canada. The ore from the Garson mine contains a much higher concentration of arsenic than the other ores. Adding this ore into the feed to the mill has resulted in an increase in arsenic content of the Cu-Ni bulk concentrate to a level that significantly affects the smelter operation, and more importantly the efficiency of Cu-Ni separation in the Matte separation plant. The arsenic occurs mainly as gersdorffite (NiAsS), with a small amount being in the form of cobaltite (CoAsS). Extensive laboratory tests on depressing arsenic in Garson ore flotation have been conducted and two reagent suites have been identified as effective arsenic depressants. One is the so called MAA depressant which is a mixture of magnesium chloride, ammonium chloride, and ammonium hydroxide. This reagent combination was reported to depress other arsenide minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and enargite (Cu3AsS4). However, in this study for the first time it has been shown to have a depressing effect on gersdorffite. The other reagent suite, a mixture of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and sodium sulfite, that has been reported as an effective pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) depressant in pentlandite ((NiFe)9S8) flotation, has not been reported as gersdorffite depressant before. The effectiveness of both reagent suites is more pronounced when the arsenic minerals are oxidised through pulp aeration or the addition of hydrogen peroxide. With a flow sheet consisting of a magnetic separation, rougher- scavenger flotation, followed by regrinding and cleaning of combined magnetic and scavenger concentrate, the arsenic recovery to the final Cu-Ni bulk concentrate was reduced from 73 per cent in baseline test to less than 30 per cent with either reagent suite at no decrease in nickel recovery. The TETA/sulfite reagent combination has the advantage over the MAA suite in that pyrrhotite is also depressed, rather than being activated, and the copper and nickel concentrate grades are therefore increased.

The Exchange requires that technical reports are produced by suitably qualified and experienced personnel and, in the case of a company listing, that these personnel have no interest in the company to be listed. Further, the Exchange has draft prospectuses reviewed by other independent suitably qualified and experienced personnel.

A proprietary hydrometallurgical ammonium chloride process for the recovery of not only zinc, but also copper, lead and silver from sulphidic zinc-rich concentrates has been developed at bench scale by CENIM and INETI (ex-LNET) as part of a research project supported by the Commission of the European Community (DGXII). This paper deals with the innovative chemical aspects applied to this chloride process and also with the more relevant data relating to mass balance, heat balance and process economics. Under mild temperature and oxygen pressure leaching conditions it is possible to extract practically all the zinc together with the other metals of interest and to precipitate simultaneously the solubilised iron fraction as goethite. The pH is kept close to neutrality in spite of the ammonia released in the leaching of the non-ferrous sulphides. A buffer effect is observed mostly due to the formation of zinc ammines which are very soluble in this medium. The zinc is further extracted by D2EHPA, the acidity being neutralised by the ammonia. Most of the ammonium chloride is naturally regenerated in this step. The zinc is recovered as zinc cathodes in a conventional sulphate electrowinning circuit. All the main raw material consumptions excluding the concentrate, such as oxygen, lime and ammonium chloride are linked to the sulphate formation in the leaching step which must be kept as low as possible by decreasing the reaction time under neutral conditions. The process analysis is complemented by the economic evaluation of a reference case. Difficulties encountered in finding a more convenient method of assessing the economics of the process in the absence of a reference price for a complex sulphide concentrate are examined and discussed. The reason why this analysis was performed with a much more optimistic metal prices scenario is also highlighted. The process economics are primarily dependent on the zinc market quotations and of course on the concentrate cost. Around 70 per cent of the total revenue is due to zinc sales. Assuming an internal rate of return of 17 per cent, the price of the concentrate can be as high as 255 $US/t for a plant capacity of 320 000 t/y (90 000 t/y of zinc).

A common problem for many mines is insufficient total primary airflow or insufficient airflow in the correct places as the mine changes over its life. This has a number of impacts on the business operation and may result in the need for a major and unexpected capital upgrade of the system, cancellation of a planned production increase, reduction in production targets, increased operating costs, failure to provide contracted metals to customers or acceptance of substandard conditions in the workplace. In some cases, it can even result in premature closure of the mine. In recent times, higher metal prices have given an expected economic boost to many mines, potentially prolonging their life but simultaneously requiring the mine to develop to deeper depths or requiring assets such as shafts and fans to have their service life extended. Insufficient primary airflow is a particular problem in deeper mines as the ventilation circuits become longer, more convoluted, have higher shock losses and the actual airflow requirements increase due to a combination of leakage, dispersion of the workings and the problems of managing the additional heat loads due to higher virgin rock temperatures and autocompression. This paper discusses the reasons why mines experience unexpected shortfalls in primary ventilation capacity with its associated impacts on metal targets, profits and frequently on the health, safety and morale of the workforce, as well as its productivity.

The Argyle deposit in the Kimberley region of Western Australia was the world’s largest accumulation of natural diamonds. Following its discovery in 1979, the mining of associated alluvial diamonds commenced in 1983, followed by the pipe in late 1985. Over the life of the mine to its closure in November 2020, Argyle produced approximately 900 million carats of diamonds. Argyle diamonds are distinctive in having a predominance of brown colours and rare highly-prized pink diamonds, which are a signature of the deposit. The 3D geological model developed from mining and deep drilling shows that Argyle is a composite pipe formed by the coalescence of several steep-sided diatremes, each with their own feeder zones at depth, that were erupted along a NNE-trending fault. The ~1.2 Ga Argyle pipe is comprised of diamondiferous olivine lamproite volcaniclastic rocks and intruded by sparse olivine lamproite dykes. The volcaniclastic rocks are predominantly comprised of unconsolidated quartz-rich lapilli and coarse ash deposits formed by numerous phreatomagmatic eruptions of olivine lamproite magma through Mesoproterozoic water-rich sands and silts. Post-emplacement deformation has tilted the orebody 30° to the north and regional strike-slip faulting has offset, segmented, and elongated the orebody. Recent significant modifications of the geological model resulted from underground block cave operations, producing several critical lessons learnt. Diamond grade and quality reconciliation issues warranted a geological investigation which resulted in the recognition of new volcaniclastic olivine lamproite domains with a broad range of diamond grades, including some very high-grade units. The new lamproite domains had a significant effect on the block cave mining and resultant recovery of diamonds. The new findings enable a more coherent and detailed geological understanding of the volcanic emplacement and paragenetic sequence of the Argyle AK1 pipe. Structural modelling of the deposit also played a major role in the block cave mining tonnage recoveries and daily operations. The re-examination of the geology of the Argyle pipe and the results of this new information reinforces the need for ongoing robust geological work both in the early stages of mining a deposit and continued during the life of the mine.

INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

The Court rejected the suggestion that CRAE had actively misled DMR concerning the worth of its tenements. The Court agreed that CRAE remained silent about certain significant information concerning CRAE's own tenement area. It was a significant question as to what duties CRAE'was under, given that it was in joint venture with DMR in respect of one of the tenement areas. Did that joint venture create an obligation on CRAE to disclose everything it knew? The Court said no. The Court said that the fiduciary duties were defined by the terms of the farm-in agreement between DMR and CRAE. When the Court examined the disclosure obligations within the confines of the contract, it held that CRAE had not breached those terms.

During recent years, Central Queensland has experienced a boom in its coal mining industry. This has involved many companies in projects requiring large capital expenditure. As with most projects of this size, many operating problems are now being experienced which were unforseen at the feasibility stage. One of these problems is the failure of pit slopes and spoil piles at some of the strip mining operations. There have been serious stability problems associated with Utah Development Company's strip mining operations in Central Queensland, in particular the Goonyella Mine. A field investigation programme was under- taken to determine the cause of highwall and spoilpile slope failures. Spoilpile failures were found to result from weakness near the spoil/floor contact zone. Highwall failures were found to result from a combination of unfavourable bedding plane dips and weakness, and the presence of joints in weak o~erburdep; Satisfactory solutions fa the staiity, problems are difficult to formulate, and-field stability experimentation is still at an early Stage.

In the early 1950's, it was forecast that there would be, worldwide, a need for approximately sixty computers! Included in that estimate was provision for a considerable amount of geoscience modelling. Since 1950, the role and concept of the computer has changed. With that change has come alteration and adaptation within industry in order to better utilise the services and tools that computers can provide. For example the science of statistics prior to the computer was regarded as an intractible speciality. Computers have allowed the exploitation and further generation of statistical theory. In turn, as the science of statistics has become practical and relevant, the mineral geologist has moved from being essentially "a-numeric" to "non-numeric" to highly skilled in the application and use of very sophisticated statistical concepts. The modern computer provides the opportunity to perform many of the old practices more conveniently and/or economically and, perhaps more importantly, for exploration it provides- an enormous range of activities which previously would have been impossible. Such new activities allow for imaginative and creative application and extension of basic theory into practical situations, which when used by well trained, able people can open up new avenues of exploration. However, the use of such tools by poorly trained or incompetent people can lead to errors potentially as great as any success derived from the same tools. This paper reviews some applications of the computer to exploration, and attempts to discuss likely future developments.

Anglo Platinum recognised with its expanded operations the need to change its evaluation strategy due to increased sample volumes and the pressure it created at laboratories. The sender/receiver analytical scenarios had to change in order to curb costs and to prevent substantial investments in new sampling and analytical facilities. Given the high cost associated with correct sampling systems and sampling protocols and the shortage of technical resources a strategy of single point sampling and analysis was introduced. The analysis was then done at an ISO17025 accredited laboratory with ten per cent checks, subjected to careful statistical scrutiny. Logistical problems increased with respect to weighbridge congestion, maintaining sampling quality, throughput of samples in the sample preparation areas, manual quality control systems in place, audit trails and analytical capacity throughout all operations. This required the expedited improvement of existing sampling practices and the development of new sampling methods and equipment. Anglo Platinum is classifying and standardising sampling equipment, sample preparation and analytical procedures for all process streams with the view to minimise overall uncertainties. Major investments were made into a customised LIMS and automated equipment for data management, reduction of manual transcription errors and streamlining of sample processing. Anglo Platinum is committed in rolling out the enhancements to all sites as priority dictates.

The San JosT district in Patagonia comprises a number of epithermal precious metal quartz veins hosted by a Mesozoic volcanic sequence. New radiometric data indicates that upper Jurassic volcanism was closely followed by vein mineralisation in the lower Cretaceous. A structural model is discussed for the district at times of mineralization that may also apply on a regional scale and other mineralised districts in Patagonia.
