This paper refers to a new idea of stereometry of cutting drums of longwall shearers designed to get medium and hard to mine coals. A new way to place picks on a drum enables to readjust a number of picks being in contact with the body of coal to shearer haulage speed. Owing to this a remarkable increase in depth of a cut within the low range of haulage speed has been obtained. On comparing operating characteristics a considerable reduction in the specific energy consumption has been shown when using the units machined as per the new idea, in comparison with the units produced in series.

The Bowen Basin coal field is an important energy resource. A relatively small proportion is avail- able by open cut operations. Responsible men throughout the world have warned of the need to increase coal research immediately. Because energy is still available in abundance these warnings have not been heeded in Australia. The characteristics of the Bowen Basin coal make it a fairly difficult underground mining proposition and a significant research effort is required to solve the problems likely to be encountered. Both industry and government have responsibilities in the economic recovery of the maximum proportion of the resource and jointly funded research administered by existing organisations should be inaugurated forthwith.

The Callie Underground Gold Mine (Callie) is owned by Newmont Asia Pacific and located 531 km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Historically, stopes have been mined utilising a primary and secondary stoping sequence with cemented aggregate fill and rock fill respectively. Current and near-future mining will employ long hole open stoping with rib pillars and rock fill with a paste fill system approved to allow a higher extraction ratio from mid-2011. The Callie rock mass is of good quality with little or no mining difficulties during development and stoping to a depth of 1140 m below surface. Development is currently occurring at depth of 1360 m below surface. Stress damage previously observed only in secondary stope accesses is now observed in development unaffected by stoping stresses. A change in rock mass properties is being experienced with depth, with more pronounced and frequent joint planes. Also, other structures are intersected more commonly, such as lithological boundaries and fault zones. The 'Callie rock factory' mentality that has persisted for years is challenged. This paper covers an appraisal of the stress and ground condition changes at Callie. The appraisal outlines the mine design criterion that was developed and examines the transition from a low stress environment to one where stress damage is observed. Discussion includes a judgement on the rock mass damage observed in development, the dominant geotechnical factors influencing the change in ground conditions, and if a correlation can be made between the observed rock mass damage with stress through the use of numerical modelling.

Mining companies in Australia have grown in size and complexity over the past 20 years. The same period has seen exten- sive changes in the operating environment, with greater competition and intensified in- dustrial and social pressures placing new demands 'on mining activity. The new condi- tions require a management approach that emphasises strategic planning rather than operational efficiency. Strategic management evolves through four distinct phases, namely, financial planning, forecast-based planning, externally oriented planning and 'true' stra- tegic management. The most difficult transi- tion to make is from Phase 2 (forecast-based planning) to Phase 3 (externally oriented plan- ning) since management is often too involved in operations to find time to develop and main- tain a strategic orientation towards the mar- ket and competitors. Reorganisation of re- sponsibility for operations and improved op- erational processes enable management to concentrate on external opportunities.

The Trent-Severn Waterway is a 386 km long navigation route through central Ontario between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, and is operated by the Parks Canada Agency. Its primary focus is to pass recreational boats through a system of 44 locks. The Big Chute Marine Railway (BCMR) is one site in the system that provides transportation for boats. The BCMR carriage is used to transport boats and their passengers on the inclined railway a distance of 230 m over a natural barrier from one body of water to another, with an elevation difference of 18 m. The unique feature of the haulage system used in this application is the variable angle of the incline from about 20 per cent rise changing to horizontal and followed by 20 per cent decline. In such conditions, unlike as in standard incline haulage, special configuration of hoists and drives is required. On the uphill part of the track, there is a need to have a motoring mode, on the downhill part a regenerating mode and on the horizontal part a combination of motoring and regeneration is required. The original system was built in 1978 and employed four 100 hp dc drive mine hoists to haul the 100 tonne conveyance loaded with 90 tonnes of boats. Due to failures and operational problems with the original system, in 1999 Parks Canada awarded a turnkey contract to ABB for a new, modern system of four single drum hoists. The new system was put into operation in 2000, only six months after receiving the order. The hoists are controlled by digital drives and a digital control system. Due to dramatic changes in the load conditions for individual hoists involved, the new system features many interesting solutions like changing drive modes from speed to torque control and a multiple, regulated braking system. It is a unique hoisting system, which could be also used in mining applications.

The grades of alluvial ore deposits are low compared with grades of hard rock mining. This factor, combined with other parameters of irregular distribution of particles, bedrock irregularities, size of particles, nugget effect, ore characteristics, and wet horizons, combine to place alluvial deposits among the most difficult to evaluate, and on which to establish an ore reserve with a high degree of confidence. With increased geological input, correct selection and implementation of sampling method, due regard to sample representativity and process design, these confidence levels can be achieved.

Mining companies have recognised that characterisation of particle breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimisation of comminution circuits. Recently the JKMRC comminution research team has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterisation testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions. The latter is believed to be the dominant breakage mechanism in AG/SAG mills. Existing devices, such as the JKMRC Drop Weight Tester, are not suitable for performing repetitive impacts since they are too time consuming. Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalised experimental test program on professionally designed and manufactured JKRBT machines. The first JKRBT was installed at the Anglo Research laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the project in 2008, with commercial release expected in early 2009. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionise ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterisation of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control of comminution circuits since it is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement. All too often engineers and project teams focus on building æthingsÆ, and they tend to see the key goals as meeting the project cost and schedule targets. We frequently compound the problem by unknowingly rewarding engineers for building bigger, more complex, more æbullet proofÆ and hence more costly æthingsÆ. Unfortunately the end result all too often ends up being a disappointment in terms of business performance. The term æshareholder valueÆ may never have entered the discussions during the development process. This paper deals with the fundamental issues, which tend to pre-dispose new developments to success or to failure. As project management concepts are not particularly complex, it begs the question why is it that the failure rate of new developments is so high? It is argued that the answer lies more in people behaviour issues than in project management tools and processes.

The carbon neutrality continues to require reduction of carbon usage in ironmaking and steelmaking processes. Specially, it is expected that the hot metal ratio (HMR) in the steelmaking process should be reduced essentially. Unfortunately, the reduction of the HMR in converter can bring about poor environment for nitrogen removal from molten Fe. From this situation, nitrogen prediction model has been developed to understand the fundamental of behaviour of nitrogen and quantitatively interpret its content changes in the converter process. Thermodynamic and kinetic approaches were improved based on existing mathematical model and attempted to predict nitrogen content in realtime by combining process data. In present study, heat supply from the oxidation (mainly carbon and silicon) and CO evolution in the converter are considered, and scrap melting due to the heat transfer from the molten Fe to the solid scrap charged in the converter also be considered.

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. The treatment plant of the Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd. is situated on the Oroya South Lease, on the Eastern edge of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile.It was designed and erected by Messrs. Alex. Stewart and Company, in consultation with Mr. Harry Hey, and was completed in November, 1937.Its original capacity was 9,000 tons of all-sulphide ore per calendar month, l?ut the plant was extended in October, 1939, to treat 13,000 to 14,000 tons per month of mixed sulphide and oxidised ore.Recovery of the gold is accomplished by cyanide treatment, followed by flotation of the cyanided residue, roasting and cyanidation of flotation concentrate and precipitation of the gold from the cyanide solutions. In the cyanide section, the crushed ore is finely ground in cyanide ,solution and the pulp is agitated to dissolve further gold. It is then thickened and filtered. In the flotation section, this filter residue is conditioned with S02 gas and a pyrite-gold concentrate recovered by flotation.This concentrate is roasted and then cyanided.KALGOORLIE ORE DEPOSIT.The Kalgoorlie ore deposit occurs within a wide area of Pre-Cambrian rocks, ,and consists essentially of two series of basic igneous rocks known as the older greenstone series (calc schist) and the younger greenstone series (quartzdolerite- greenstone) . Gold mineralisation at the Globe Progress deposit is hosted by a geologically complex zone of shearing and brecciation, within a package of deformed metasediments. Mineralisation styles range from quartz breccias and lodes to sheared clay pug zones and disseminated sulfides. A review of the diamond drill core intersections through the deposit indicates that critical hanging wall and footwall contacts can be a combination of sharp or gradational; visual or non-visual boundaries. Approximately 60 per cent of mineralised contacts can be confidently identified visually, particularly where associated with veining, distinct brecciation or shearing, and high sulfide content. However, the gold grade and distribution of disseminated mineralisation can be extremely difficult to estimate visually, with implications for resource estimation and grade control when mining. Using observed drill hole geology and assays, a new geologically based model for the gold mineralisation has been constructed for the deposit to reflect the expected variability of the mineralisation contacts. This new model will constrain resource estimation and also serve to act as a predictive model when open pit mining commences. Nevertheless, careful grade control practices such as drilling, trenching and supervised extraction of ore will be required to maximise ore recovery and minimise dilution during open cut mining.

Reflected light optical microscopy, or epimicroscopy, is one of the oldest techniques of modern mineralogy. At a relatively low capital cost, it is also very resourceful, and the analytical choice for the identification of most ore minerals. In ore mineralogy, reflected light optical images have the potential to overcome the main limitation of backscattered electron images from scanning electron microscopes, namely contrast of mean atomic number  below the spectral resolution of the backscattered electrons detector. This is the case for relevant ores, like iron (haematite-magnetite) and copper-zinc ores (sphalerite-bornite), but for both cases the pairs of minerals are easily discriminated in reflected light. The improvements in optics and electronics also made microscopy a powerful source of digital images, suitable for automated analysis for minerals processing, as the determination of liberation spectra. The drawback, however, has always been the impossibility to recognise the transparent minerals, which account for most of the gangue phases in ores, from the embedding resin, usually epoxy. In order to determine if there was any possibility to separate quartz from epoxy resins, reflectance spectra have been acquired for quartz and some commercial epoxy resins (Araldite, BuehlerÆs Epothin and Epocolor, Araldite spiked with fluorochrome from Struers), from 380 to 720 nm in 5 nm intervals. Reflectance of quartz and epoxy is very similar over the whole visible light range, and varies from 4.5 to five per cent. Epocolor, a red-dyed epoxy, reflects slightly more above 560 nm, as does Araldite spiked with the fluorochrome from 460 to 570, but for both the reflectance is still very close to that of quartz, under 5.1 per cent. This data set is final, and precludes the application of reflectance in light optical image analysis for assessment of liberation, phase quantification, or any other signal that requires separation of resin from transparent minerals.

The current financial climate has given rise to fears that falling mineral prices and tight credit will force mining companies to cut back on production and new project development in a bid to cut costs and conserve cash. However, a prolonged squeeze on global supply can have only one result: a massive and potentially explosive demand for metals in the not-too-distant future. A resurgent global economy will also generate dramatic new demand for oil and energy, with a return to higher oil prices likely. How then should the mining industry plan for the future? In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) could lead the way as a partial or complete substitute for trucks. In 13 of 15 studies undertaken by Sandvik and Snowden, comparing IPCC with truck-optimised pit designs, IPCC generated operating savings ranging from US$0.18 to US$0.82 per tonne moved, compared to trucks. Trucks have higher operating, maintenance and energy costs than conveyors. New emission standards on diesel engines may make them more emission friendly but less efficient in terms of energy usage. With far more efficient energy use and cheaper operating costs per tonne moved than trucks, conveying offers an attractive alternative for the bad times ahead and into the apparent energy depleted future. When evaluating alternatives, a reasonable first step would be to conduct a scoping level study which analyses the differences in capital and operating costs between a truck and shovel operation and an IPCC solution. The study can also determine what type of IPCC is best suited to the particular mining application. The results can then be used to decide whether a more detailed study is justifiable. IPCC is a proven process that, with a fresh mindset, can make a significant improvement to mining operations. Sandvik (as an OEM with a full suite of IPCC equipment) can undertake these studies in ten working days in conjunction with Snowden or any other independent mine planner who knows how to schedule for IPCC. Because most mining industry personnel have been æborn and bredÆ on trucks and shovels û this paper focuses on some of the practical considerations necessary to make IPCC systems work that the Sandvik Technical Services Group has encountered during these studies.

Information from bores in the LatTobe Valley has been accumulating for over fifty years, and the manual extraction of details has become a limiting factor in their use.Punched card equipment, installed by the State Electricity Commission for accounting purposes, was known to be available for reasonable periods, and it was suggested that this could help in the extraction of data from the voluminous records.Investigation showed that they could be substantially duplicated on cards, with consequent gains on many operations; the cards being regarded as an auxiliary to the existing records.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RECORDSAs a bore is drilled a continuous record of the strata is kept, together with notes on the presence of water or any unusual features which the driller may observe.When coal is struck, samples of each ten feet are usually sent for analysis.The location and surface level of each bore is fixed by surveyors, and details of dates and methods of drilling are also kept.Bores are allocated numbers, prefixed by the name of the parish within which they are drilled. Numbers are allocated in conjunction with the Department of Mines, to avoid duplication.Records of strata and analyses are kept in folders, with 100 bore numbers per folder.Standard plans are drawn, showing the locations, bore numbers and surface levels. For each bore they also show the depth and thickness of coal struck, and the total depth drilled.Cross sections are then drawn, connecting the various coal seams, which have been identified by the geologist.

In recent years the mining industry has suffered from skill shortages in a range of disciplines including mine geology. As a consequence, many businesses operate with incompletely filled organisation charts and technical professionals are frequently thrust into roles earlier than previous generations of geologists, engineers and metallurgists. Exacerbating the difficulties managers face with recruiting suitably experienced professionals is the churn of people through roles. Churn may be caused by internal pressures related to the rapid increase in projects and opportunities within a company or by external factors including the high workforce mobility resulting from the advent of fly-in, fly-out (FIFO). Historically, new entrants into the mine geology profession often received on-the-job training from their more experienced colleagues. This training, supplemented with targeted skills and knowledge enhancement through dedicated short courses, ensured the wide range of skills, knowledge and abilities required in the complex role of mine geology were continually renewed. Faced with an influx of new graduates and a dearth of mine geology professionals in the critical ten to 15 year experience range, the industry needs to develop new paradigms to ensure that the full business benefit of the mine geology function is delivered. This is increasingly important as the complexity of business planning built on geologically-based variables grows. Mine geologists are now faced with the potential incorporation of geometallurgy and waste characterisation along with energy efficiency, carbon-economy and other environmental issues into their roles. Providing baseline data, models, operational control and reconciliation for a wider range of variables further stretches the already limited geological resources available to the industry and exposes personnel with relatively low levels of experience to potentially business transforming decision processes. This paper outlines a successful approach to mentoring at the individual and team level. It discusses what went well and what could have been done differently from both the mentor and menteeÆs perspective with examples from case studies and offers insights into a new approach to dealing with gaps in organisation charts and high turnover of personnel.

Geometallurgy aids the understanding of orebody variability through the integration of geological and processing information, thereby enabling spatial mapping of processing (eg comminution or separation) performance across a deposit. In order to do this, estimates of quantitative geometallurgical attributes are needed so that continuous downhole profiles can be generated for each attribute, providing vital data for the development of processing domains through geostatistical modelling. However, as traditional comminution tests are high cost and/or require large samples, current practice typically results in insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. The aim of this work was to find a method to estimate comminution indices based on data that is widely available at mine sites. This data includes mineralogy and chemistry of drill core samples, plus logging information such as lithology and alteration. Work to date indicates that comminution parameters such as semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Power Index (SPI), Bond Work Index (BWI) and A*b (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight test (DWT) Index) can be modelled using chemical and/or mineralogical data. The estimated hardness indices can then be propagated into the mine site database and used in the definition of processing domains that map inherent variability across a deposit. Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The Hazelwood Mine (HM) commenced operations in the 1950s and was originally operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) prior to it becoming privatised. ENGIE, the current owners of the Hazelwood Mine ceased operations in 2017 and have since transitioned the site into the rehabilitation and closure phase, which is to encompass a full pit lake as part of the final landform. A key aspect of HM closure is the maintenance of long-term stability of the pit slopes to deliver a final landform which is safe and sustainable, particularly given its proximity to critical public receptors. The Princes Freeway, which is the primary access route to the Latrobe Valley (LV), and the Morwell Township are both located immediately to the north of the HM. After multiple tailings dam failures in recent times, the owner organisations have made increased efforts to step up the governance systems to industry best practise in the design, construction and operational management areas. The measures include but are not limited to, site investigation, rigorous peer review (both internal and external), certification through appropriately qualified personnel and improvement in operational management practises. While a lot of focus is on design and operational practices, the construction stage requires adaptation (both in terms of materials and approved design) and immediate decision making on site. Work undertaken in these areas is mostly irreversible and sometimes poses serious threat to the future TSF raise/ expansion planning and may lead to reduced life of the TSF and additional risk to the Owner.This technical paper will discuss some challenges and highlight the importance of appropriate processes to achieve a successful construction regime. The process will include a robust quality control/ quality assurance process, a team of designer-constructor-owner with suitable skills and technical understandings and robust documentation of the entire construction process from day 1 to the completion of construction.CITATION:Kundu, A and Laxman, M, 2018.
