This paper outlines an approach to high solids slurry pipeline design with data generated from a closed pipe-loop test system. The pressure and flow rate data generated is used to develop a pseudo-shear diagram for the purposes of system design. Following this approach enables the design of a full pipe flow system maximising system life and reliability. The alternative free fall system is explained and the disadvantages highlighted.Environmental and social considerations are discussed; mainly water and land use, and how designing for high solids slurry pipeline systems can be used improve these aspects of a mining project.Also discussed is how the use of high solids slurry pipeline systems can help to mitigate the risk associated with surface tailings storage facility failure, with the Bulyanhulu project used as a positive example.

The assessment of the face velocity of blasts is important in the analysis and subsequent improvement of blast performance. POWERWAVE RADAR is a new tool which will make the collection of this data easier for blast researchers. The data collection technique ensures that a large amount of face velocity data is collected from a blast, and describes the velocity characteristics of the face at a new level of detail. This results in a greater understanding of the effect of drilling and blasting parameters on blast performance. Several case studies are presented which illustrate the collection technique, the type of data generated and how the data is used.

The cost of capital is the rate at which a project's cash flow should be discounted to obtain the Net Present Value. The cost of capital is a weighted average of both debt and equity funds of a company, on an after tax basis. Two methods are described for calculating a company's cost of equity, the Dividend Valu- ation Model and, more importantly, the Capital Asset Pricing Model. A worked example is presented where the cost of capital was obtain- ed for two resource companies. The application of the cost of capital was illustrated by way of a mining equipment replacement problem. The paper outlines refinements and problems that may be encountered with the use of the cost of capital, and concludes that it is an integral part of any project evaluation.

The ongoing need for improved fuel economy, longer engine life, reduced emissions and greater power output has driven the need for lower charge air temperatures. Cuamins will introduce a split loop, single water pump approach to low temperature aftercooling (LTA) in 1987 with the introduction of its 1492 kW (2000 BP) 16 cylinder K Series engine. The LTA system selection process considered performance, durability, fuel economy, and total engine installed cost. The split loop system selected takes full advantage of the engine cooling characteristics to provide optimum charge air temperatures at all speeds, loads and ambient temperatures. Computer simulations and engine tests were used to determine performance for each charge air cooling alternative. The split loop system chosen offers many advantages compared to the other alternative systems studied which included air-to-air and dual loop (two radiator, two water pump) systems.

IN the course of his employment the Broken Hill Co. the writer has had occasion to use and instruct others in the use of the Shamrock rescue apparatus. This paper deals with the various types of apparatus tested. The common object of the various types of breathing apparatus is to enable the wearer to remain and work for varying periods of time in an atmosphere which is either deficient in oxygen or is poisonous that is, contains carbon monoxide or irritating and irrespirable vapours, such as the smoke from underground fires, sulphur dioxide or ammonia fumes. For any apparatus to be efficient as required in the above paragraph it must fulfil the following conditions;1. Air-tight as regards the passage of the air from the outside to the inside. In atmosphere containing carbon dioxide a slight leak would not render the apparatus useless; but where irritating vapours, such as the smoke from burning oregon and sulphides, are met with, even the slightest leak must be avoided.2. The oxygen supply must be ample, and so supplied that it is not checked by expiration.3. Expiration and inspiration must not be retarded.

The development of a coal project must pass through a number of phases, taking it from a preliminary evaluation through to detailed mine planning. For each phase the cost of data acquisition and associated mining studies increases exponentially for linear improvement in confidence levels. Within each mine planning phase there are four main activities. These are the economic ordering of reserves, the development of optimum mining strategies, mine design and scheduling and finally the estimation and analysis of costs. The development of the optimum mining strategy is one of the most critical aspects of a mining evaluation and the application of economic criteria at this stage of the project is vital to the successful generation of an optimised mine design. A recommended method is the concept of Economic Ratio (ER) which expresses the likely cost of mining from a given location in a deposit in terms of the value of the product likely to be recovered. The most economic mining strategy will be to mine areas from low economic ratio to high economic ratio within the constraints of reasonable equipment application. When selecting equipment a particular machine should not be selected solely on comparison with other machines in isolation, but the total application must be analysed. In the final selection the decision should be based on whether or not it has a beneficial effect on overall project economics. The economic assessment must take into account the time value of money, so the real cost can be determined with adequate provision for capital and operating costs over different time spans.

Extensive infrastructure construction works were required for the development of the underground and open-cut coal mine at Ulan to a production capacity of 5 million tonnes of steaming coal per annum. The Ulan Mine development project was constructed in a two year period at a cost of $240 million. The infrastructure component included the construction of the mine site building works, civil works and 150km of railway, valued at $105 million. These works were successfully completed under a construction management agreement within two years. The separate elements of the project are described in detail in the paper.

The first step in the mining and processing of nearly any mineral ore is comminution. Since the oil embargo of 1979, the mining companies have been striving to reduce energy consumption and costs. The first serious step was the introduction of in-pit crushing in the early 1980s. With in-pit crushing accepted as a standard design mode, the energy saving emphasis turned to comminution practices. A great deal of attention has been focused on blasting and grinding. The one step that has not been addressed is the primary crusher. This paper will address the opportunities for comminution improvement through optimisation of the primary crusher.

Large diameter raise boring is a common raise excavation method in the Australian mining industry. Geotechnical investigations were conducted on several large diameter raise bore projects at Gwalia Mine to assess the potential for instability and potential back-reaming problems. A thorough geotechnical analysis and subsequent back-analysis was conducted on a vent raise excavated at 5.5 m diameter and 810 m length.The geotechnical investigation for the vent raise included collection of data from an acoustic televiewer survey that was conducted on the pilot hole. The survey results provided structural data and an insight into the effects of stress on the pilot hole. Structural analysis was conducted using a combination of information obtained from the acoustic televiewer survey and geotechnical logs of the diamond drill core drilled close to the site.Further information was collected from drillers’ plods from pilot hole drilling and back-reaming to conduct a back-analysis of the completed shaft, and this was compared with the structural analysis.The key finding from this review was that the acoustic televiewer survey of the pilot hole accurately identified locations with blocky conditions. This is an important supplement to the information available from the main geotechnical investigation hole, as this was offset from the shaft location over most of its path.CITATION:Stephenson, R M and Sandy, M P, 2014. Accidents in open pit mining have a high cost in lost time of person- nel, damage to equipment and installations, and lost production. The realities of export competition require that Mine Management sig- nificantly reduce the costs associated with accidents and workplace ill-health. Newer management approaches are proving effective in reducing the Total Cost of Risk through a strucured Occupational Health and Safety Programme exhibiting the following features: ò Formal Company Policy ò Accountability for OH&S performance clearly designated to each level of management and supervision ò Effective utilisation of a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Co- Ordinator and a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Adviser ò Development of realistic OH&S Objectives ò Training of Management, Supervision and Workforce in Occupa- tional Health and Safety ò Development and adoption of Safe Work Practices and Procedures ò Effective employee selection procedures, control of Contractors ò Monitoring of the health of the workforce ò Collection, recording and distributing information on all Mine inci- dents, accidents, injuries and damage ò Ensuring that the Mine environment is healthy and safe ò Effective Emergency Procedures to deal with injury, fire, rescue and other situations of risk ò Controlling those Mine hazards which cannot be removed ò Adopting a high standard of Occupational Rehabilitation ò On-going visible Management participation in the programme to ensure that momentum is developed and maintained. This approach requires that Occupational Health and Safety be given equal status with product quality, maintenance of plant and output per- formance; its implementation is rewarded with improved morale and major cost reductions.

Power supply for remote mining developments is compared with supply to the general public with the conclusion that the private power plant operator has many opportunities to minimise his costs which are not open to public utilities. The main features of diesel, gas turbine and steam power plant and the limitation upon their application which may be imposed by the fuels available and the local conditions at remote sites are outlined. Reference is made to the value of joint examination by the mining engineer, metallurgist and power engineer to decide how to make best overall use of capital, labour and energy in co-ordinating the design of power and process plant and in setting no more than adequate standards of reliability and efficiency. Fluctuations in world markets make it difficult to plan mining operations to a firm time base. Suggestions are made to minimise the financial risk in forward expenditure upon power plant which in large sizes due to longer construction time may have to be ordered before a final decision is taken upon the mining development it is to serve.

Process control computers are finding ever increasing applications within the chemi-cal and mineral processing industries.To purchase a system which fulfils both the immediate and future needs of operating, technical and management groups, requires an appreciation of the capabilities of the system software and the constraints which apply to user development of application software. Early decisions are then required as to who will develop and maintain the software. Rules and conventions must be determined and adhered to if the end result is to be an orderly, well structured and properly documented system. Software development and maintenance represents a substantial, and often hidden, cost. Getting it right the first time will avoid either a major re-work, or having to live with a system which is extremely diffi-cult (at the worst, impossible) to trouble-shoot or modify.

The Dittmer process for the debismuthising of lead by electrolysis beneath molten caustic soda has been scaled up to 100 kg lots for batchwise operation and to 20 kg per hour for a continuous flow of lead. Bismuth was decreas- ed from 0.03 to less than 0.005 wt. per cent for an electricity consumption of 220 kWh per ton of lead. Lower bismuth levels may be readily achieved if required.

On Wednesday 11th November, 1970, a series of violent explosions occur-- red within No.1 Basic Oxygen Steelmak- ing (B.O.S.) furnace at the Whyalla Works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., (B.H.P.) when the furnace was moved immediately prior to tapping. Water from a burnt out flux chute had flooded the bath while the furnace was tilted slightly towards the tapping side waiting to tap. Although no one was injured, dam- age in excess of $54 000 was caused to the hood and superstructure. The water hydrated the burnt dolomite refractory lining some of which sub- sequently collapsed exposing bare fur- nace shell over part of the cone.

""The key to lifting margins is changing systems."" A system is anything that drives ways of doing things. Sometimes these are formal, and documented, and sometimes they are not. Improving productivity The way to dramatically improve performance is to use the systems. Roberts stressed that if systems and processes are under control, the benefits of automation are huge. If they are not, the benefit of automation will be lost. To improve productivity, you need to: ò identify what to change in the process, ò use the proven methodology to systematically improve the process, and ò change what people do - change work practices.

The Australian lead-zinc industry faces a future in which the world market is likely to show at best only minimal growth and in which there will be increasing competition. Its production facilities use mature technologies employing expensive labour and increasingly costly energy in a country which demands the highest standards of environmental performance. Returns on investment are already unsatisfactory.Technology for survival would appear to indicate a need not only for more efficient capital, labour and energy usage combined with improved environmental performance, but also flexibility to handle more complex materials than the traditional, virtually single metal concentrates. This offers the potential for improved overall economics from the mine onwards, but will demand efficient separation and by-product recovery processes.In the lead industry these problems are being addressed in several emerging technologies. With zinc, the situation is less clear.

Diversity is a key strength for Western Mining Corporation. An international corporation with assets of about $A10 billion, WMC is engaged in both mining and downstream processing of minerals including nickel, gold, alumina, copper and talc, as well as having interests in oil and gas production and agricultural fertiliser. The company is focusing on several core commodities that will maintain its strength in the years ahead. Although most current mineral assets are within Australia, it plans to have 25 per cent of its operations off-shore by the turn of the century, and be a major producer in at least six core commodities. WMC's strategic and management focus has shifted from a regional approach to a commodity focus so that it can more readily cater for different markets with differing sensitivities. The environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations of mining companies promote the consideration of water and land resources as well as the post-mining employment opportunities following the cessation of mining operations. This work aims to outline the potential for a mining operation to use their brackish mine water resources to support microalgae production, generating high-quality organic carbon sources to support their mine rehabilitation and closure outcomes. Microalgae production is an established commercial process for high-value products including vitamins, cosmetics and food supplements. On mine sites, microalgae production offers several major environmental and social opportunities: (i) carbon capture, (ii) metalliferous water treatment, (iii) acid mine drainage prevention, (iv) beneficial reuse of brackish mine water, (v) accelerated soil formation and (vi) post-mining employment (Levett et al, 2023).
