Preparing for automated sample preparation has two facets; the need for better procedures as seen by the laboratory Manager and the approach to be adopted as envisaged by the equipment manufacturer. Both have many options and during the 1990s some at least of these options will be tried. As automation of sample preparation is only just beginning, can it be said that there is a real need for better procedures. What does automated sample preparation have to offer? Does it have real advantages or is it just a marketing tool to sell equipment?

Mr. P. F. THOMPSON said this matter was one of very great importance to producers of lead. His association with the matter was that he happened to be the Institute representative on the Committee of the Standards Association of Australia charged with formulating a standard for chemical lead, that is, lead used in technical chemistry for acid chambers and the like. The British standard had this test incorporated in it, but those on the committee felt that it should not be included in the specification. The main objection was that in an accelerated corrosion test one was endeavouring to do in a few seconds what in natural conditions would take years; and it was now being recognised that such tests were of little value in assessing the corrosive properties of a metal.The flash point test was carried out with boiling hot strong sulphuric acid; but no chemical manufacturer would be likely to use such in contact with lead. There were many factors such as the formation of steam, the chemical reduction of sulphuric acid, the evolution of hydrogen, the catalytic effect of the surface lead, affecting this test, other than the presence of the segregated impurities upon which this test throws the onus of the whole imperfection of the lead. Mr. Russell had shown that lead which had stood the test of time often gave a low flash point. They were endeavouring to find rapid methods of estimating minute amounts of the more important impurities, which would eliminate the labour and expense of a full analysis.Mr. H. St. J. The integration of economic, cultural, social and environmental decision-making has increasingly become globally recognised as the only acceptable way of doing business consistent with sustainable development. This concept requires a move to a new economy, where environmental, cultural and social issues are accounted for and integrated in business decisions and practice. There has been much discussion on sustainability and sustainable development, but organisations are still grappling with what this means in reality for their business and how they should respond. The challenge is to take the way we do business to a new paradigm and make solutions relevant to business. This paper will look at some of the strategies and programs being adopted or considered by resource companies as they move towards a more sustainable future. These include defining a sustainability framework for their organisation, developing the business case and planning approach. Also included is a brief overview of some of the new approaches to environmental management, such as reducing materials and energy intensity, minimising or eliminating impacts through better waste and emissions management and process control, taking a whole of life approach to products and conserving resources. The concepts of Product Stewardship, Eco-efficiency and Cleaner Production will all be discussed.

Minera PenmontÆs gold mine, La Herradura, is located at the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora and consists of an open pit mine and heap leaching facility for the recovery of gold. The production began in July 1998, and today La Herradura produces about 200 000 oz of gold per year. Standard sampling and assaying protocols were established during exploration based on heterogeneity tests. However, at deeper zones of the pit, coarse gold became evident and it was necessary to develop a new sampling protocol in order to minimise the fundamental error and improve the metallurgical accounting. This new sampling protocol requires cyanide leaching the whole pulverised sample from the blasthole, assaying pregnant solution and fire assaying 50 g of tailings. A sampling study was performed on 195 blasthole samples analysing gold under the standard and new protocols. The new protocol demonstrated that the original one underestimated gold grade by approximately 27 per cent, with impacts on ore misclassification and metallurgical accounting. According to the ore grade control system, mineral with gold grade above 0.35 g/t was sent to the leach pad and mineral with lower grade was classified as waste. Based on the sampling study, it was decided to classify a low-grade ore with gold assay between 0.20 and 0.35 g/t which was stored for future treatment under better gold prices or should mine production decrease. These two conditions were present during 2005 and 2006, when about 3.5 Mt of low-grade ore were leached.

The paper briefly describes the mining system employed on Western Deep Levels for the past 20 years. The negative aspects which gave rise to a new mechanized method of mining are discussed. The sequence of events leading from the Mine's first attempt at trackless mining in 1980 to the present day in-stope project is presented. The original justification for this project and the in-stope trackless mining method is described in detail. The results to date are evaluated and the original rationale for going in-stope trackless mining questioned. A totally new mining philosophy for Western Deep Levels, whereby major geological disturbances are left in situ and longwalls re-established and mined using trackless mining machinery is described. The economics of this mining method are discussed. Trackless mining machinery can also be put to good use within the conventional longwalls in a new method of mining using Load Haul Dumpers (LHD) in reef drives. When the instope trackless mining project commenced in 1983, it was stated that expansion to any significant degree with diesel powered vehicles could be ruled out and electrically driven alternatives would have to be developed. This issue is discussed and the Mine's decision to expand with diesel powered vehicles explained. Finally, the extent to which trackless mining is likely to be seen in the 1990 s at Western Deep Levels is discussed.

For several decades miners have been obliged to maintain a vast supply of sharp steels at the working face to meet the hungry needs of rock-drills. In medium and large size mines this has meant the setting up of an organisation to store steels, to make and sharpen bits with all the complication and skill of forging, hot milling and heat treatment, and to transport sharp and dulled steels to and from the working face with all its labour, wastage, and inconvenience to other mining operations.In a mine with 250 rock-drills in use, a flow of more than 60,000 sharpened steels each month has to be maintained to keep the machines fully employed, so some idea of the magnitude of this problem may be grasped.For a long time it has been apparent that it is mainly the bit itself that wears, and many attempts have been made to reduce the enormity of the problem by providing detachable steel bits which could either be used once and rejected, or sharpened three or four times before rejection.At the same time metallurgists have striven to 'improve the quality of the steel and the heat treatment afforded it so that a bit, readily workable In a normal mine drill-shop, could be produced having a high resistance to wear and fatigue; but, although various alloy steels have been marketed, it is still usual to find many mines relying on a "straight" carbon (0.6 - 0.9% C.) steel for their drill steels.Since 1915 increasing use has been made of tungstencarbide as a cutting implement in the engineering industry. Microbial desulfurisation of coal has significant advantages over physicochemical desulfurisation processes since the former process selectively removes the inorganic sulfur compounds and heavy metals without significant carbon loss. The purpose of this study was to improve the desulfurisation yield of a coal sample from northeastern coalfields, Assam, India using microbial technique. The coal sample contained 2.13 per cent of total sulfur and 2.59 per cent of ash. Stirred tank reactors of 40 L capacity were operated in batch mode. Initially, the reactor was fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) coal, ten per cent (v/v) inoculum of mixed culture of mesophilic acidophiles, native to coal itself and the requisite amounts of constituents for 9K medium without added ferrous sulfate. The percolate of the reactor was then used to seed the medium for the next experiment. The purpose was to obtain a better adapted and more active biomass which would give a better desulfurisation yield for coal. Further studies were conducted in the bioreactor, fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) pulp density of coal, ten per cent inoculum (derived from previous studies) and the medium, supplemented with ferrous sulfate. Results showed an increased total desulfurisation yield of 43 per cent in the latter treatment in comparison to the previous one, where the desulfurisation yield was only 23 per cent. The findings also demonstrated the convenience of using inocula derived from coal, where 50 - 60 per cent of pyritic sulfur was removed, while chemical desulfurisation is of little significance with the majority of coal types. The ash content was also reduced to 1.74 per cent as the low pH of the process caused dissolution of a number of common minerals present in the coal.

Economically efficient mining processes can be significantly assisted by the implementation of sensor technologies for the detection of materials and boundary layers between materials inside the stratum. These sensors are meant to facilitate the machinery operator and illustrate furthermore the prerequisites in assisting tools towards fully automated mining equipment. Therefore, project æSensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the InterfacesÆ (SIMT) aims at the integration of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and geoelectric sensor technology by endowing with them a bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. For this reason, a sensor bucket was developed and tested in the Inden Mine of RWE Power AG. The feasibility of integration and deployment of such sensor technology has been proven effective for the conditions of open cast mining. The main focus of current research lies on developing algorithms to analyse the acquired measurement data from the sensors to automatically detect layers and materials. A computer network receives the GPR and geoelectric measurement data as well as the positioning data of the sensor bucket. The positioning data mainly consists of GPS and encoder information, which is merged with the sensor data by using the UTC time stamp. With the aid of consecutive processes the relevant information will be extracted and provided to the user. The aim of SIMT is to replace material identification, traditionally carried out by the operator, by implementing a continuous operating interpretation system in mining equipment based on GPR and geoelectric sensor technology, resulting in more detailed information regarding the working face during an excavation. This detailed information provides an opportunity for efficient planning and controlling of selective mining of natural deposits, such as the process of lignite mining.

Modern, research-based approaches to mineral exploration are essential to the future maintenance of the mineral industry. These need to fully utilise the rapidly expanding growth of understanding of the evolution of the earth's crust, and be properly integrated with advances in understanding of chemical and physical processes involved in ore formation. BMR has a major role to play in supporting the growth and utilisation of this research base, as well as maintaining the national geological and geophysical bases which are essential both to tactical and strategic interests of Australia and of its mineral industry. The objective development of data-process modelling is one target of such strategic research based on a more integrated approach to research by BMR, mineral companies, CSIRO and the universities with emphasis given to promoting positive feedback during research activities. Examples of the success of strategic research in Australia and overseas are noted in the Text.

The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd located near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation. The economics of this exercise have been considerably enhanced in the past year by changing the project's principal product from nickel oxide sinter to refined high purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site. Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to completely change the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.

The end-use areas for mineral sand-based products include those products whose demand is tied to general economic growth, such as paints and plastics, and refractory bricks for the steel industry. High techno- logy applications such as zirconia ceramics and super-magnets are indica- tive of new developments in technology which provide considerable scope for expansion at higher rates than overall western world economic growth. An optimistic outlook for the industry is outlined, based upon a brief review of opportunities.

The aim of this study is to examine the volumetric and mass movement characteristics of load and haul operations using statistical modelling of relatively large samples of bucket loads that are transported as small samples in the form of truck payloads. Generally, the factors influencing bucket load variability are random, difficult to predict and to control. In the process of loading trucks the underlying variability of individual bucket loads will determine the variability of truck payloads. Bucket loads of material prepared by drilling and blasting for loading into trucks are fundamental quantities in open pit mine production. A study of payload data from a large surface mining operation indicates that bucket loads and truck payloads that are a small sample of bucket loads are normally distributed. Truck payloads have a reduced dispersion compared with bucket loads that is an inverse 0.5 power function of the number of passes per truck payload. Comparison of statistical modelling results with the æ10/10/20Æ policy promoted by Caterpillar Global Mining Inc, indicate that compliance with the æ10/10Æ part of the policy, applying to truck overloading is facilitated, as the coefficient of variation of truck payloads decreases, as a result of the increasing number of loading passes. Compliance with the more stringent æ20Æ part of the policy, relating to safe steering and braking is also facilitated, albeit at lower coefficient of variation for similar reasons.

The primary objective of any planning exercise is to maximise the return on funds utilised while maintaining a safe and socially responsible working environment. In order to achieve this, it is essential that the assumptions applied reflect as accurately as possible the future realisation of the project. In narrow vein mining, the risk that this will not occur can be significantly greater than that associated with other types of mining projects. This results partially because of dramatic effects upon project cash flows with seemingly minor changes in operating parameters such as orebody width and wall rock competency.The validity of a planning exercise can therefore be related to the extent of available data and to the experience and perceptions of the operating entity. The various factors which must be assessed include absolute values and variations in a range of factors, especially the dip and dimensions of the orebody, the geotechnical parameters and anticipated ground conditions, the productivity and production characteristics of the selected mining method as applied to the specific orebody, and the impact of mine access and development.

To study the creep properties and the energy evolution characteristics of the weakly cemented rock (WCR) in western China, the creep deformation damage law of weakly cemented mudstone (WCM) under graded loading and the energy evolution characteristics of each creep stage were analysed based on the triaxial graded loading creep test of WCR. The results showed that as the confining pressure increased, the creep failure strength of the WCM increased from 9.5 to 24.8 MPa, and the relative displacement of the mineral particles in the mudstone increased gradually, resulting in a reduction in the fracture angle from 79.7° to 58.3°. At the same stress level, the strain energy Ue, the total energy U, and the dissipation energy Ud all increased as the confining pressure increased, but the growth rates of U and Ud decreased gradually, while the growth rate of Ue remained high. At the end of the stable creep stage, Ue increased slowly with the confining pressure, while U and Ud increased rapidly with the confining pressure, and their growth rates were basically the same. At the end of the accelerated creep stage, the growth trends of these three energies were all positively correlated with the confining pressure, Ue was significantly lower than that at the end of the stable creep stage, and Ud and U were further increased. These results revealed the unique creep properties and energy evolution characteristics of the WCR, providing a theoretical basis for long-term stability control of roadways that are built with WCR.

The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at 'Ellatzite-Med' Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of 'Ellatzite' flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

The optimisation of mine complexes and related value chains is a challenging problem due to the simultaneous presence of a highly-dimensional decision space, integer decision variables, non-linear constraints and recovery functions, as well as geological and market uncertainty. In addition, if the uncertainty is revealed progressively, then decisions need to continuously adapt to new information, which poses additional challenges. Stochastic dynamic programming is a well-known class of methods for addressing problems where a decision-maker reacts to new information. While simplistic applications of dynamic programming using exact representations would be intractable for any realistic mine planning problem, new dynamic programming methods using approximate value function representations have been successfully implemented in the past to address problems of similar complexity.
