Accurate measurements of the moisture content of iron ore have increasing importance in modern mining operations. Knowledge of the moisture content allows process control actions to be carried out to ensure that the moisture is within prescribed limits, whether this is ensuring sufficient moisture to be above the dust extinction limit or that the moisture level is below the transportable moisture limit for sea shipments. Additionally, controlling moisture within desired limits can allow for greater throughput of iron ore by limiting the amount of water transported. There are a range of options available for operators wishing to obtain moisture data, though there are few demonstrated and proven devices that are able to provide real-time analysis of the full bed-depth of material. Scantech’s through-belt moisture systems are able to accurately analyse the full bed-depth of conveyed iron ore in real time using its unique microwave transmission technology, providing valuable data for operators. Recent advances in these systems have overcome errors associated with the highly attenuating nature of iron ore, particularly for large conveyor belts and deep ore. Furthermore, analysis of different ore mineralogy and its effect on the accuracy of moisture analysis has been examined and quantified. This paper discusses some of these recent results, demonstrating achievable accuracies in spite of changing ore mineralogy. Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (AAMC) manages five open cut coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales, producing approximately 30 million tonnes per annum. The size and complexity of these mines require efforts by a large and diverse number of personnel to minimise adverse geotechnical events from occurring. To achieve this, the AAMC coal mines in Australia are developing a concept of managing the geotechnical risks associated with open cut coal mines. The overall system utilises a combination of internal training, a management system (operational management systems) and standards, numerical modelling, monitoring, inspections and audits. The development of the standards as well as training and mentoring of exploration personnel, geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists and mining engineers with an interest in the geotechnical aspects of mining, training of the production workforce, mentoring and training of the technical staff create the basis for achieving a pro-active rather than a reactive system. Audits are used to assure that personnel are maintaining the standards and to facilitate cross-mine leanings so that best practices are developed across all sites.

The Queensland Government, via the special purpose company vehicle û City North Infrastructure Pty Ltd û is currently developing BrisbaneÆs Airport Link underground toll road and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron).Airport Link is a predominantly underground toll road planned between BrisbaneÆs northern suburbs, the airport and the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) frame. The Northern Busway forms part of BrisbaneÆs expanding busway network, sections of which will be jointly delivered with Airport Link. Airport Link will connect the North-South Bypass Tunnel, Inner City Bypass and local road network at Bowen Hills to the northern arterials of Gympie Road and Stafford Road at Kedron and Sandgate Road and the East-West Arterial in the cityÆs north-east. The Northern Busway is a two-lane, two-way bus-only roadway proposed to connect the existing Inner Northern Busway at Herston with Windsor, Lutwyche, Kedron, Chermside, Aspley and Bracken Ridge. Airport Link and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) is one of the largest infrastructure projects planned in the first phase of the State GovernmentÆs South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program. The paper will provide an overview of the projects, including a discussion on the technical and environmental aspects as well as the procurement of the Airport Link as a public private partnership.

The George Fisher Underground Mine at Mount Isa applies the long hole open stoping methodology. During the reconciliation process of transverse stopes in the George Fisher North mine it was identified that excessive underbreak was regularly experienced, with the major contribution coming from the toe area inside the stope.While over break and the resultant dilution was well investigated and well understood, limited work was done on underbreak improvement. It was decided that a re-engineering process would be followed in an attempt to improve results. The prevailing stoping practices were scrutinised and the possible causes were listed.Some of the identified causes were design, drilling accuracy, equipment condition, mucking practices and direction of firing. It was identified that in most instances the underbreak was initiated in the slot area of the stope during the first firings. Once this happened, it was impossible to get good recoveries on the rest of the stope. The slot area was carefully scrutinised and the blasting practices were changed individually.During the following two years several different strategies were trialled to increase the toe recoveries. The results indicated an overall improvement of six per cent reduction in underbreak on average, by ensuring drilling accuracy and changing the direction of firing. The economic significance of these results outweighed the time and additional work load expended to establish the cause of the problem. This paper outlines the continuous improvement process undertaken to identify and rectify the major contributing factors to the problem. It also presents a set of recommendations to be followed in order to achieve positive results.

Most new engineers in the mining industry do not realise the importance of legal obligations. During investigations the first question you are asked is: Do you have any proof or evidence? The smallest detail in an underground notebook or a diary entry is able to be used as your proof and/or evidence. The importance of a paper trail is often undervalued and overlooked when you first enter the industry. As a new engineer, all too often your legal obligations, including your duty of care are not given enough consideration. Whose job is it to inform you of what your legal obligations are and when do they end? Everyone has legal obligations at every level of the industry, from graduate to mine manager. The level of these responsibilities varies depending on the position that you hold. When you first start in the industry you need to understand what your responsibilities are and how you are expected to discharge them, whether they are memos, databases or senior sign-offs, etc. In order to fulfil your obligations you must first discharge your own obligation, which in turn discharges those of your department and ultimately those of the mine. As a graduate engineer in the mining industry what I have learnt about my own legal obligations has come directly from my own experience, which will form the basis of this paper.

The use of spectral data has traditionally been for obtaining mineral information and for mapping out alteration systems. The output from these data is typically in the form of mineral assemblages and data on relative proportions of minerals. However there is much more than just mineral information in the spectral data. Most importantly, the data allow the user to obtain vital information on mineral chemistry for some key alteration minerals. The mineral chemistry data allow the users to evaluate multiple phases of alteration of the same key mineral species, and to assess which phase is related to mineralisation. Mineral indices can be extracted from the spectral data and plotted to represent variations in the chemistry and relative proportions of key mineral phases as downhole, section and three-dimensional (3D) plots. These data can also be compared with the spatial distribution of the mineralisation by integration with geochemical and logging data. Through spatial and statistical evaluation the mineral information obtained using spectral analysis can provide vital information to assist in building alteration models and therefore improve targeting for further drilling and exploration.

Physical separation features in almost every mineral processing circuit. The category encompasses a broad range of techniques and technologies including hydrocyclones, gravity concentration methods (including jigs, spirals, centrifugal concentrators, tables, heavy media separators) and thickeners, all of which make use of the inherent density differences between two mediums. It is also possible to include flotation, magnetic separation, and ore sorting in the physical separation category.However, opportunities for enhanced physical separation performance can now go beyond the common practice of optimising unit operations. Improved options exist for feed preparation ahead of the physical separation stage, enabling higher performance and lower cost outcomes for physical separation flow sheets and technologies.The use of new applications in breakage technologies combined with mineral liberation analysis to optimise liberation prior to the physical separation stage provides options for preconcentration and gangue rejection as well as better separation efficiency. The use of low cost gangue rejection and preconcentration can be an intermediate step between mining and processing that allows processing of lower cut-off grades from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill.Optimising flow sheets and technology performance requires detailed understanding of particle size and shape distributions as well as liberation characteristics to suit the particular separation unit, combined with knowledge of the available technologies, their capabilities and the economic impact across the whole mine cycle.CITATION:Gray, A, 2017. The Ernest Henry Mine is an open pit copper-gold mining operation located in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current concentrator throughput of approximately ten million tonnes per annum. The pit will cease mining towards the end of 2010. Extensive surface diamond drilling has confirmed an extension of the orebody to depths of 1000 m below surface. A prefeasibility study was commissioned in late 2006 to investigate underground mining options with the preferred mining method being an inclined sublevel cave. In February 2008 mining of a decline commenced in conjunction with a feasibility study to further investigate the project. Work from the prefeasibility study indicates that an underground crusher, conveyor and hoisting shaft could be utilised to crush and transport broken ore from the sublevel cave workings to the concentrator. The study suggests that a production rate of five million tonnes per annum could be achieved and sustained for up to ten years. Ventilation designs and requirements will form a large section of the feasibility study. This paper will detail investigations of preliminary ventilation network designs of the proposed sublevel cave. Work has been completed using both Ventsim and VumA ventilation simulation packages. Ventsim was used to provide preliminary estimations and suggest alternatives for: surface fan duties;airflow characteristics (direction, velocity, pressure and quantity); andventilation network design in key mine areas. With mining activities reaching depths in excess of 1000 m below surface an analysis of heat conditions should be conducted. The VumA software package was used to model the thermal properties of the ventilation system. This model will provide a basis for the preliminary decisions on refrigeration requirements for the mine.

Faced with the need to improve workplace conditions in both its development and production headings in its existing K1 orebody, as well as its new K Link and K2 orebodies, the Kencana mine in Indonesia took the novel approach of reversing the ventilation on most of its access ramp by outcasting up the ramp to the portal. Working levels were then fed with fresh air via auxiliary fans sealed into the current surface ‘egress’ intake raises (ladderways) or another small surface intake raisebore rather than from fans hung in the ramp as in the past. Outcasting the portal provided a substantial increase in the total mine exhaust capacity allowing fewer levels to be ventilated in series and significantly improving conditions, especially in the most difficult workplaces to ventilate. It also reduced the consequences if there was to be a fire on a vehicle in the ramp. The same system using the ramp as an exhaust is also intended to be used as part of the final ventilation solution for the new K2 orebody which also uses a novel single surface ventilation shaft that is vertically split into separate intake and exhaust compartments using a concrete brattice. Using the main ramp as an exhaust has potential application in many other operations in Australia using surface ramps which otherwise frequently suffer from overuse of series ventilation circuits and poor working conditions at the mine bottom.

The main parameters are : 1. the size of the deposit, average grades and grade distributions, 2. the operating costs of mining and concentration, 3. the investments in mine and mill, 4. the smelter charge, 5. the price(s) of the metal, 6. the recovery and the grade of the concentrate, 7. the rate of interest, 8. the taxation formulae, 9. the upper limit to rate and the rate interval and 10. the upper and lower limits to cutoff and the cutoff interval. An amount of ore can be mined at various rates while applying various cutoff grades. For too long we, as an industry, have borne the brunt of irrational claims, poor science and even worse, journalism with regards to our affect on the environment. To some of us, the overwhelming media attention on greenhouse warming, the polluting outputs of mineral processing or unthinkable depletion of natural resources has left us embarrassed and more unfortunately has turned bright young people away from a career in the minerals industry.This paper shows the hypocrisy associated with an element of the green movement and dispels some general myths on mining disseminated by radical environmentalists.The fallacy of the greenhouse warming effect will be scrutinised by common sense and the mining industryÆs use of land will be discussed and put in proper perspective.Problems associated with safety and emissions and the means to overcome such are discussed briefly.

When the Paulsens operation was poised to be placed on care and maintenance, Bill Beament and the rest of the Northern Star Resources (NSR) team capitalised on the opportunity to send the Ashburton region’s only operating gold mine into the record books.A three-stage strategy was devised by NSR to pay off the acquisition and maximise the return from the operation. The first stage was to mine the 55 000 oz mine plan and pay off the cost of the acquisition, then maintain profitable production beyond the seven months and re-establish a mine life. The second stage involved an early commitment to a 220 m long diamond drill drive being placed in the hanging wall of the orebody from which the extensions of the orebody could be further explored, allowing the second stage of the plan to come into effect and extend the mine life by converting Inferred Resources into the mine plan. The third stage of the initial plan was to utilise this drill drive and continue to drill deeper holes beyond the current limit of drilling in the ore zones to extend the orebody and increase the mine’s life.With an ever growing desire to further expand, the young company took on the bold move of establishing its own mining services division. A critical element to the success of this was ensuring that the right people were recruited with the appropriate specialised skill sets.Aligning common goals amongst all NSR team members, from the board and senior management to the work force on site, was critical to integrate the new and driven direction that Paulsens had adopted. It was essential to change the focus and a shift in all employees’ attitudes and values from a mine that was all but down and out, to a site that wanted to be kicking some serious goals.Teaming together a passionate and driven leader with a strong allied workforce was always going to put NSR in the best position possible to make Paulsens the success story that it now is. Equipment wear is strongly related to the performance of grinding circuits. In particular, SAG mills are subjected to the wear of their shell liners and grates. Changes in lifter height and face angle impact mill performance, while classification at the mill discharge is also affected as grates wear out. Moreover, liner mass loss caused by wear affects how operators interpret readings of sensors such as load cells or bearings pressure. Automating and optimising grinding circuits under these constrain becomes challenging due to the nonlinear and dynamic nature of the system. The operation of SAG mill grinding circuits remains largely dependent on human intervention, which frequently results in inconsistencies in performance across shifts, reflecting the operator’s personal preferences, experience, and other human factors. The influence of human factors can be reduced by careful training of operators as well as by automation using advanced supervisory control. The latter approaches could benefit from the development of dynamic process models that consider the effects of wear on the performance of equipment over time. This paper presents detailed industrial data showing the effects of wear on SAG mill performance. Additionally, a dynamic SAG mill model that accounts for these phenomena is proposed and demonstrated in a simulated environment. This model is shown to mimic the effect of wear on the performance of industrial scale mills and the operational constraints they are subject to, thus extending traditional SAG mill models. Incorporating wear into modelling and simulation platforms can improve the understanding of the effects that wear can have on the performance of key assets in comminution circuits and may allow the development of more robust model-based advanced process control strategies.

Control of complex machinery through the internet is investigated through the construction of a vehicle prototype developed using off-the- shelf hardware. The vehicle was able to be controlled remotely through the use of a client side interface connected to a steering wheel and foot pedals. By attaching sensors to the vehicle, data could be collected from which one could infer the effectiveness of such a control system. The effect of latency on control was monitored by the introduction of an artificial latency, simulating a wide variety of internet-related issues, such as unstable connections and dropouts. Sensor data could then be used to gain an understanding of how the system could be improved though either control or interface design. A path tracking experiment was conducted to gather controllability data and it was found that such a system is plausible within a reasonable range of latencies. It is expected an area of future research would be an extension of this current project, applying the information gained to real world control systems.

The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

Hydraulic Monitor mining at Solid EnergyÆs Spring Creek Mine has proven to be a safe and effective method of extracting steeply dipping thick seams at production capabilities approaching one million tonnes per annum.   This paper traces the development of Hydraulic Monitor mining from its initial introduction into old workings at Strongman Mine, its refinement at Strongman 2 in shallow, thick and steep workings, through to its introduction into the deep, very thick seams at Spring Creek Mine. This last step of the progression came with all the added complications that come with depth, particularly flammable gas.   This paper will describe the various changes in mining conditions that dictated the performance of the monitor, how the mine layouts were changed to adapt, and the various operational systems that were put in place, to allow a safe and productive operation.

Goonyella-Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine in Central Queensland. One component of the mining operations at this site is an uncompacted spoil dump some 50 m above the natural ground surface and over 300 ha in extent formed as a result of bucket wheel excavator operations. Plateau area slopes are 0.5¦ to 1.5¦ with irregular outer dump slopes of 9.5¦ - 17¦Investigation was undertaken and a series of trials planned to assess the suitability of a variety of stabilisation proposals to meet the client's requirements and to conform with Department of Resource Industrystabilisation guidelines.
