The conventional CaO-SiO2-based mould fluxes are not suitable for high-Al steel casting because of the strong reaction between silica in the flux and aluminium in the steel strand. In the process of casting of high-Al steel, flux composition changes; with the decrease of the silica concentration and increase of alumina. Knowledge and understanding of the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on flux structure and properties are useful for flux design for the high Al-steel continuous casting. This paper investigated the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on structure, viscosity, phase composition of fluxes quenched at different temperatures and heat transfer of CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-B2O3-Na2O-Li2OMgO- F fluxes. It was found that flux melting temperature increased with the increase in Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Viscosity of the flux melts increased significantly with the increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio from 0.7 to 1.2, reaching the maximum value, and then decreased with further increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the change of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the change of aluminate and silicate structural units. The turning point for viscosity was attributed to the change in the degree of flux polymerisation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio increased crystallisation tendency of the fluxes. Heat transfer measurement by infrared emitter technique (IET) revealed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the decrease in heat flux which is correlated well with the increased crystallinity of the flux. The results suggested that the flux with Al2O3/SiO2 ratio 4.3 is the best candidate among the studied CaO-Al2O3-based mould fluxes for casting of high-Al steel.

Utilisation of lower grade (Jigging technology has progressed to a point where SishenÆs 50 to 60 per cent Fe run of mine (ROM) material, once considered as waste, can be beneficiated to produce a saleable 64 per cent Fe product. This has been confirmed through appropriate beneficiation testwork. Consequently, Sishen can now produce saleable product from material not currently included in the resource definition, significantly increasing the resource base of the mine and ensuring higher resource utilisation. Mine planning utilised the geological models to produce detailed planning schedules, reflecting the current and SEP plants separately, optimised to comply with product specifications of both the current and SEP plants and to confirm the viability of the low-grade resources identified as SEP feed material. The SEP product specifications have been derived by optimally matching iron ore market requirements with the revised resource base. A 64.0 per cent Fe lump product and a 63.5 per cent Fe fine product are the optimal SEP products. The SEP plant will be able to produce 10 Mtpa at an average yield of 60 per cent and a lump to fine ratio of 62:38. The plant consists of five major sections: namely crushing, material preparation, beneficiation, final product handling and quality control services. Maximum integration with the current Sishen plant was considered. Kumba currently has an agreement with Transnet to rail up to 23.5 Mtpa through the Sishen Saldanha iron ore export channel (IOEC). Transnet and Sishen Iron Ore Company have signed a Definitive Agreement that deals with the expansion of IOECÆs capacity, which increases KumbaÆs entitlement from 23.5 Mtpa to 35.0 Mtpa. The detailed enviro-legal impact assessments for the SEP indicated that the project has low enviro-legal risk as a result of it being a brownfields project incorporated into the current Sishen operations.

The data referred to here consists of project reports, manufacturer's equipment literature and papers concerning almost every aspect of the excavation process. Why is it then, that many projects that employ full face tunnel boring machines (TBMs), on average perform significantly less than the peak performances reported in this industry?

The iron ore products should be assessed in terms of in-furnace behaviour and overall furnace performance, their operation should also be optimised under industry-scale blast furnace (BF) conditions, in order to be sustainable and competitive, especially in the context of decarbonisation efforts in ironmaking. While lab and pilot-scale experiments can provide useful kinetics, they are expensive and risky and cannot replicate industry-scale blast furnace conditions for proper assessment and optimisation. In this paper, we review our recent progress at Shen Lab of UNSW in using state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to assess iron ore products and examine the effects of their operations on BF behaviour in basic terms, including in-furnace phenomena (flow field, temperature field, species distribution fields etc) and overall BF performance (coke rate, reduction efficiency and top gas temperature etc). We have developed state-of-the-edge CFD models for different purposes, ranging from the static-state BF model featuring unique layered burden structures for offline assessment and optimisation knowledge building-up for iron ore products, to the transient-state BF model for online assessment and optimisation of iron ore productions by describing the transient behaviours of iron ore productions under industry-scale conditions. First, we have studied several iron ore products including the iron ore products used in the present BFs and emerging iron ore products like carbon composite briquette and iron-coke. Second, several iron ore operations are studied including optimisation of conventional burden operations like oxygen enrichment, batch weight tuning and new operations like coke central charging and hydrogen injection in BFs. Third, some time-sensitive operations are also investigated including the use of wet burden materials and the drop in blast temperature on BF performance. These CFD models offer cost-effective research tools for understanding the effect of iron ore products on BF performance and serve as a reliable marketing tool for existing and emerging iron ore products under a wide range of BF conditions.

The Mt Leyshon Volcanic Complex lies 24 kilometres south-west of Charters Towers and is part of a major continental volcano-plutonic province of Permo-Carboniferous age in north-east Queensland.The volcanic complex is located on the contact between Cape River Beds of Cambrian age and the Ordovician Ravenswood Granodiorite Complex. The emplacement of the complex appears to have been structurally controlled and is at the intersection of major north-east and minor north-west trending lineaments. The gold mineralisation occurs in the form of cavity coatings, matrix replacement, disseminations, and vein and fracture fillings containing quartz, chlorite, carbonate, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena in various volcanic breccias and rhyolitic intrusives. The current published mineable ore reserves, calculated by Noranda Australia Limited, are 6.3 million tonnes of 1.8 grams per tonne gold and 4.8 grams per tonne silver. The orebody is open at depth, and in all directions except north where it abuts the granodiorite.

The South Deep massive orebody consists of 20 to 30 in of payable conglomerates ranging in dip from 11¦ to 20¦ and at depths of between 2400 in and 34(10 in. The mine design process selected a mining method with a proven record of application that could be adapted to overcome the inherent difficulties associated with the depth, thickness and structural influences of the South Deep orebody. A modified cut and fill mining method provides a concentrated and highly flexible method of extraction. An integrated destressing cut will enable the modification of the stress environment such that it is suitable for massive mining operations. The choice of backfill type and stoping width in the destressing cut ultimately determines the characteristics of the stress modification and, as such, is critical to the success of the cut and fill operation. This paper discusses the decision process undertaken to determine the optimum backfill type and stoping width combination in terms of, conditions in the destressing cut faces and in the massive mining environment. Numerical modelling has been extensively used to analyse arious scenarios to aid in the decision process.

This paper will first discuss the fundamental requirements for reliable discharge of backfill by gravity alone at high per cent solids. This discussion will include brief mention of the underlying principles of saturated solids flow contrasted to that of stirred tank or dilute discharge systems. Here the need to possess full knowledge of the flow properties of the stored material will be highlighted. In addition proper account must be made of the silo overflow weir and settling capacity to match plant throughput. Here opportunity will be taken to highlight the complexity of this multi-phase flow situation as well as the general yet paramount requirements for reliable solids flow. It will be shown that by proper attention to the multi-phase considerations gravity discharge of slurries as a consolidated bed with minimal water content is possible. Such high solids discharge results in greatly reduced demand for process water. In addition pumping costs are reduced as is the delay time associated with the mine drainage operation. Confirmation of successful applications will be highlighted by reference to several recent case studies. In the concluding phase mention will be made of the key yet very simple and effective operation techniques which enhance reliable discharge. The simplicity and reliability of properly designed gravity discharge backfill tank systems suggests increased application of this technology by the mining industry.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.

The floatability methodology developed by the AMIRA P9 project through research contributions by the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre (JKMRC, Brisbane, Australia), University of Cape Town (UCT, Cape Town, South Africa) and McGill University (Montreal, Canada) has been successfully commercialised through JKTech. The methodology involves detailed flotation plant campaigns which require large quantities of data to fit models that can be used in JKSimFloat (a steady state simulator for the flotation process). The methodology to date, although widely accepted as the best flotation optimisation technology available, is limited to existing circuit optimisation and requires full plant or pilot plant data to calibrate new models. The floatability of new ore types cannot be characterised using this method unless a pilot campaign is undertaken. After reviewing a large database of existing industrial floatability data, a new methodology is proposed that involves a laboratory based flotation test procedure and review of the floatability database to characterise the floatability of new ores. The full methodology is labelled the floatability index test procedure (JKFIT). This paper outlines the JKFIT procedure and the results of applying this methodology to pilot plant data from a copper ore. JKFIT was applied to two different feed sizes (namely a P80 of 180 microns and 212 microns) of this copper ore. The results of applying JKFIT to this case showed that the metallurgical response (in terms of grade and recovery) from the full pilot plant survey data could be predicted well. Further validation of this methodology was conducted on a separate copper ore. The results from this validation also showed that the JKFIT test was able to be used to predict the full plant performance. The JKFIT test has the potential to become the 'drop weight' test of flotation which will improve the confidence in plant design flow sheet layouts, allow full orebody characterisation and prediction of key grades and recoveries before the ore enters the plant, and will provide an improved methodology for chemistry impact analysis on different ores.

Qualitative risk assessment methods are not well suited to considering complex systems and potential interactions of new technology. As part of supporting tier one mining organisations and international industry groups, the author and colleagues have innovated processes to help provide better solutions to sites/companies considering a move to implementing proximity detection and collision avoidance systems. The process identifies required operating states for the system. By applying a combination of research and team-based analyses, a rigorous identification of credible failure modes which could cause these states to be lost, is identified. Finally, required business inputs, expressed in practical terms are distilled from regulator, industry, organisation and site in a way which clearly addresses the failure modes and so retain the required operating states. These business inputs identify improvements for site arrangements (EMESRT levels 1 to 7) before identifying functional requirements for technological collision avoidance solutions (levels 8 for advisory and 9 for autonomous). The paper presents a case study synthesised from multiple sites analyses and will provide guidance on where to find additional resources to assist in making the best possible transition to better equipment and road network solutions.

The Bulolo Graben represents an intra-arc rift formed by activa- tion of transfer structures in an extensional setting formed be- tween the eastern and western sectors of the New Guinea Origin. Crustal thinning has facilitated the emplacement of dacitic Edie porphyry intrusions, locally as flow dome complexes, phreatomagmatic (diatreme) breccias and the Bulolo ignimbrite/ agglomerate as an extrusive equivalent of the Edie Porphyry. Gold mineralization is localized along intra-graben structures, com- monly at the intersection with cross structures and occurs in sub- sidiary dilational fractures and not the localizing major structures. Gradations are apparent in the styles of mineralization according to the degree of erosion of the hydrothermal system. Hamata occurs as the deepest mineralization of the quartz-sul- phide style Wau, Hidden Valley, and Edie Creek are dominated by carbonate-base metal styles. Kerimenge grades from quartz sulphide through carbonate-base metal to epithermal mineraliza- tion, the latter style also being present in the periphery of Edie Creek. Here, pre-existing fractures of the Edie Creek Structural Corridor have been reactivated by movement on NS structures to form the ore-hosting dilatant lodes. Fluid flow may have been from the vicinity of the Nauti diatreme margin and along the vein System.

The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

The CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system, characterised by its intricate phases and thermodynamic properties, plays a pivotal role in steel secondary refining processes, encompassing desulfurisation, non-metallic inclusion capture, and refractory protection. Accurate predictions for diverse industrial applications, including metallurgy, ceramics, and materials science, are imperative. To address this challenge, a combination of machine learning techniques will be specifically applied to model the liquid fraction of the slag and the solid fraction of MgO. The development of an artificial intelligence (AI) system, leveraging various machine learning techniques, has gained momentum in this project. The focus of this work is on constructing an AI model, based on machine learning techniques, within the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system, utilising simulation results from FactSage™, version 8.1 (by GTT Technologies). The primary objective is to train the AI model using these simulation outputs to predict the percentage of liquid fraction and MgO saturation based on chemical composition parameters. The AI model will undergo training with a comprehensive data set of simulations within the CaOMgO- SiO2-Al2O3 system, covering a diverse range of compositional at 1873 K. These simulations, conducted through FactSage™ 8.1 software, provide a robust foundation for AI model training, ensuring generalisability and precise predictions for the liquid fraction of the slag and the solid fraction of MgO, the solid fraction of MgO in this case is determined by the difference between the total MgO and the MgO in the liquid fraction, so it is not the objective of this study to determine which phase of MgO is in the solid state.. The predictive capabilities of this AI model hold significant implications for process optimisation, quality control, and decision-making in CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3- dependent industries. Precise estimations of the liquid fraction and MgO saturation empower researchers and engineers to enhance operational efficiency and quality. This paper explores the methodologies employed for AI model creation and training, achieved results in terms of prediction accuracy, and potential applications in the field. The development of this AI system signifies a notable advancement in utilising machine learning for better comprehension and control of complex chemical systems. Furthermore, to align the study with real-world steel production, we introduce FeO and MnO at concentrations of 2 per cent and 1 per cent at 1873 K, respectively, following the validation of model results using the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system. This adjustment aims to bring the study closer to the observed reality in steel mills globally.

The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Ocean Survey 20/20 is a follow-on marine mapping programme to underpin resource exploration and environmental management of the EEZ and extended continental shelf.

A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. This paper describes the design, manufacture and site services associated with the supply of mine hoists for the new mine under construction by Falconbridge Limited in Ontario, Canada. Two new shafts are being sunk, and the hoisting equipment at each shaft can be summarised as follows: Ventilation shaft:4.66 m diameter double-drum second-hand hoist, originally in operation at San Manuel Mine, Arizona, to be used as the shaft sinking hoist. The second-hand hoist presented a challenge in that during its previous life, the hoist had been intensively operated during service at San Manuel Mine, and this paper describes the scope of refurbishment work undertaken, both electrically and mechanically, to ensure future reliable operation, together with the requirement to meet Canadian and Ontario regulations and codes of practice. 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist to be used as a second means of egress. Main shaft:4.57 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used initially as the shaft sinking hoist, and subsequently to be converted to the equivalent of a single-drum multi-rope hoist for service duties during the production phase; 5.49 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used for skip hoisting during the production phase; and 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist.The new hoists are all designed to comply with SABS requirements such that hoisting with reduced rope safety factors will be possible in the future. This paper describes the principles involved both mechanically and electrically. Particular attention is paid to the conversion of the main shaft service hoist from a double-drum sinking hoist to a multi-rope hoist.This paper describes the ac electrical powertrains (drives and motors) used that eliminate the need for harmonic filters and reactive power compensation equipment since they exhibit no negative effects on the utility electrical network system. This paper describes the logistical challenges of installing, commissioning and setting to work a series of five hoists in a short time frame.

The Fozichong deposit – located in the south-western segment of the giant Qinhang metallogenic belt, South China – is a large-sized lead-zinc polymetallic deposit. This deposit contains two main ore districts, termed as the Guyi ore district in the north and the Hesan ore district in the south respectively. We present an integrated data set on sulfide minerals, fluid inclusions and stable isotope (H-O-S-Pb) geochemistry to better understand the features and genesis of the Fozichong deposit.Field and paragenetic relationships indicate three mineralisation stages forming the early (Po+Sp+Gn+Ccp+Py+Di+Ep+Qtz), middle (Sp+Gn+Ccp+Py+Ep+Chl+Qtz) and late (Gn+Sp+Py+Qtz+Cal) sulfide assemblages respectively. Mineral chemistry – particularly S/Fe and Co/Ni ratios in pyrite, Zn/Fe, Zn/Mn and Zn/Cd ratios in sphalerite and Pb/Ag ratios in galena – indicates a magmatic association for the sulfide minerals.Quartz and calcite coexisting with the sulfide minerals of various stages host abundant fluid inclusions. Quartz in the early stage contains two- or three-phase CO2-H2O and liquid-rich aqueous inclusions, which have homogenisation temperatures of 162~365°C and salinities of 2.9~17.8 wt per cent NaClequiv, whereas quartz and calcite from the middle and late stages are dominated by two-phase, liquid-rich aqueous inclusions that have slightly lower homogenisation temperatures (153°C~320°C) and much lower salinities (1.0~6.0 wt per cent NaClequiv). Hydrogen isotopes (dD = -59‰~-41‰), analysed using fluid inclusion waters from quartz and calculated oxygen isotopes (d18OH2O = -5.47‰~4.00‰) for the equilibrated ore fluids, indicate that the ore-forming fluids may have been sourced from magma and mixed with groundwater in the late stages. Sulfide minerals have d34S values of 2.3‰~4.3‰, consistent with a magmatic-derived source for sulfur. Lead isotopes (206Pb/204Pb = 18.592~18.794, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.648~15.864, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.909~39.580) confirm that lead and, by inference, zinc were mainly derived from magmatic rocks, with subordinate contributions from sedimentary rocks.Various lines of evidence support that the formation of the Fozichong deposit has close genetic association with the granite porphyry intruded in the late Yanshanian period (106 Ma), and it can be classified as a magmatic hydrothermal type lead-zinc deposit.
