Mount Isa Mines has four mining operations in Mt Isa with the X41 and Enterprise Mines producing copper and the Lead Mine and George Fisher producing lead zinc and silver. Each stream contributes ore to their respective concentrator at a feed rate and therefore metal ratio set out by the monthly schedule. Mine Planning and scheduling lead to a sales and operating plan (S&OP) and revenue projections which ultimately derives actual revenue /tonne and therefore cost/tonne. At Mount Isa, both the copper and lead/zinc streams produce ore from relatively new operations to be blended with material from more mature operations. It is critical to accurately predict the metal contribution from each operation in order to gauge the relative performance of each mine. Development mining ore contributions are estimated and reconciled, as are stope and bench sources. Performance is continually measured and assessed during extraction and grade adjustments are made to account for underbreak, overbreak and design modifications. It is critical to not understate or overstate the contribution from one operation relative to the other as this can produce a false picture of operational performance. Identifying process improvements are key to improving the business overall. Ore from the lead stream passes 17 measurement stations and two midstream reconciliation points before delivery to the heavy media plant (HMP), where the metallurgical circuit begins. From this point two concentrates are produced. A zinc concentrate for treatment off site and a lead concentrate for further on site processing. The lead smelter takes 100 per cent of Isa concentrates as well as a contribution from BHP-BillitonÆs Cannington Mine.

Developed and built in 1982 for simultaneous bathy-metric and reflectivity mapping of the deep ocean by the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, SeaMARC II was a breakthrough in sea-floor mapping technology. The design was developed cooperatively by industry and academia, and the system has served as a prototype for a new generation of mapping tools for operation in both shallow and deep water.Research programs using the SeaMARC II system have focussed on basic research into the geophysical evo-lution of the Pacific, ranging from intra-atoll mapping to surveys of the deep-sea trenches. During the past few years most work has been concentrated on detailed investigations of the morphology of mid-ocean spread-ing centers, seamounts, and the subduction zones which surround the Pacific. The detail provided by the high resolution, 10-km wide side-scan sonar images of fault and fold structures, combined with the swath of bathy-metric information obtained simultaneously, allow previ-ously unattainable analysis of seafloor morphology and are leading to development of detailed models for ocean crust genesis and deformation.

A sample of fifty fractured low chromium-molybdenum alloy drill steel rods was investigated. Each rod was of the forged collar integral tungsten carbide type in common use in Australia.Examination of a new rod of the same type showed that a zone of spheroidized carbide about 0·25 in. wide was present about 12 in. from the shank end.Examination of the fractured rods revealed that 78 per cent. of failures occurred within 0·25 in. of the spheroidized zone at the shank end but in the main stem of the rod rather than actually in this softened zone where it might be expected to occur.This predominant type of failure at the shank end in the steel rods is caused by a highly anodic region corresponding to the first stages of spheroidization of carbides present in the steel. Accelerated corrosion in the narrow band havil\g this structure induces the formation of stress-concentrating corrosion pits, 78 per cent. of failures in this region being due to corrosion fatigue.The remaining 22 per cent. of failures, occurring in the as-rolled stem, were due to either corrosion fatiglie if failure were initiated at the water-hole surface of the drill rod, or to a decarburized outer surface if failure originated at this surface.Temperatures producing spheroidization were determined as 6007600C.Evidence suggests that approximately 75 per cent, of shank-end failures in all forged collar drill rods can be attributed to corrosion fatigue occurring preferentially in that section showing partial spheroidization of carbides· produced by the forging and hardeningoperations.Methods are suggested for reducing the frequency of fatigue failures in drill rods.INTRODUCTIONAn integral part of all tunnelling operations through rock is the drilling of suitably placed holes i:n.to which explosive is subsequently rammed and exploded.The drilling operation, whether for metalliferous mining or for general civil engineering constructional work; is...

The æMine to MillÆ concept is not new. In fact, it is the underlying objective of every mine. Unfortunately, in many operations the management structure and reporting systems have created independent æbusinessesÆ within the overall mining enterprise. This has created incentives to optimise the performance of each component of the operation rather than the enterprise as a whole. The Mine to Mill Conference organised by The AusIMM in October 1998 documented a number of case studies where run of mine ore was not presented to the mill in the best possible form for subsequent stages of comminution and processing. A number of examples were quoted where modest expenditure in the mine had a very significant impact on downstream process efficiency and hence costs. Examples included:the minimisation of fines in the mining and handling of iron ore; the management of fines in blasting and crushing for a copper heap leach operation; the control of blast damage, mining recovery and dilution in open cut coal operations; and the optimisation of mine fragmentation to increase mill throughput in gold and copper operations. The latter topic has been trialed at a number of mines and is referred to as æMine to MillÆ fragmentation. A number of æMine to MillÆ type investigations have been reported in the literature including Pease et al, Simkus and Dance, Nielsen, Scott et al, Kojovic et al, Kanchibotla et al, Bulow et al and Hawkes from the 1998 Mine to Mill Conference. In addition, a number of studies are in progress or the results have yet to be published. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining the data required to characterise the breakage behaviour of ores and to model the impact of changes to blasting practices on process efficiency. Characterising the breakage behaviour of ores is a vital step in the management of fragmentation and comminution in mines. The characteristics of importance to fragmentation fall outside the parameters conventionally required to describe the economic geology of a deposit. æMine to MillÆ optimisation of fragmentation means that the mining engineer needs information from the geologist in order to be able to help the metallurgist. Providing this information requires close interaction between these groups.

The Convergence Confinement Method (CCM) is one of the frequently used methods that considers the ground response to the advancing tunnel face. The CCM analytical solutions represent stress relaxation on circular tunnel walls in a rock/soil media. The CCM analytical solutions is based on circular tunnel geometry and consider a hydrostatic stress field in a homogeneous isotropic rock mass condition. However, noncircular tunnel geometries, non-hydrostatic stress field, staged excavation process in a discontinuous anisotropic non-linear rock mass conditions are usually ignored in these analytical solutions. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the existing CCM analytical solutions developed for elastic and elastoplastic ground behaviour for circular tunnels. For this purpose, a finite difference analysis is conducted to compare the analytical results with the results obtained from Finite Difference Method (FDM) for a chosen rock mass condition. Results obtained from the investigation shows that floor, crown and wall displacement are 30%, 10% and 23% more, respectively, in a horse-shoe relative to a circular tunnel. This indicates that the application of analytical formulation tailored for circular tunnels would lead to inaccurate quantification of wall convergence in horseshoe-shaped tunnels. The Prominent Hill copper-gold deposit is located approximately 150 km north west of Olympic Dam, on the southern margin of the Mount Woods Inlier in South Australia. Its discovery in November 2001 resulted from the application of a geological model developed from geological, geophysical and petrophysical data pertaining to the Olympic Dam deposit. The discovery has dispelled the notion the Olympic Dam may be unique, and that another deposit like it is unlikely to be found. The Prominent Hill mineralisation is hosted by haematite-matrix hydrothermal breccias, which have suffered extensive iron-sericite-silica alteration and overprinting. Copper, gold, barium, fluorine, uranium, cerium and lanthanum are all intrinsically associated with the hydrothermal iron. Breccias intrude an east-west striking, fault-controlled sedimentary succession, which is flanked to both the south and north by volcanic complexes. Many similarities between Prominent Hill and Olympic Dam are documented including geological setting, mineralogy, breccia styles, and alteration. Differences relate largely to the nature of the immediate host rocks. The similarities and difference provide key data for improving exploration models for this style of iron oxide copper-gold deposit, both within the Gawler Craton as well as globally.

This paper presents an overview of the current status of mine water management in South Africa. The regulatory framework within which mine water management operates is set out, based on the principles and policies embodied in the relevant legislation. The status of the gold and coal mining industries, with regard to water management, is presented on the basis of studies that have been undertaken to develop water and salt balances for these industries. While the data is not available to quantify the status of ARD in South Africa, the range of typical mine water quality problems faced by South African gold and coal mines is presented. The status quo, problems and challenges relating to mine water management are presented and discussed. It is shown that, while there have been major strides in the last decade, and mine water management and treatment in South Africa has moved onto the forefront of mine environmental management, important problems still persist. There is still a significant amount of improvement required, particularly in the field of prediction of water quality deterioration and the application of such predictions to the identification of management actions that can be applied to prevent or minimise mine water pollution in the shortmedium- and long-term.

The Tampakan deposit is a strongly telescoped high-sulphidation-epithermal/ porphyry deposit pair which is hosted by a sequence of probable Pliocene age subaerial andesite flows. These host units lie on the western flank of a deeply dissected andesitic stratovolcano within the northernmost portion of the Sangihe Arc in southern Mindanao. The deposit was discovered by WMC geologists in 1992 and is currently undergoing resource evaluation. Preliminary resource estimations indicate a total inferred metal content of 12 million tonnes of copper metal and 16 million ounces of gold. Using a 0.2 per cent Cu cut-off grade, the deposit has a current mineral resource of approximately 2.5 billion tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.48 per cent copper. At a higher cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Cu, the mineral resource is approximately 900 million tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.75 per cent copper. Mineralisation is open both to the west and at depth. The Tampakan district is centrally located with respect to a 100 km wide zone of left-lateral strike-slip deformation represented by the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The district is transected by several WNW-striking wrench faults which represent strands of the regional Cotabato Fault Zone. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation within the Tampakan deposit is strongly controlled by NNE-trending faults which lie along a dilational orientation within the Pliocene stress field associated with the Cotabato strike-slip fault zone. The mineralisation is broadly hosted by a gently-dipping, tabular zone of partial to massive silicification which displays multi-phase brecciation, acid-leaching, related vuggy porosity and which is developed within a district-scale advanced-argillic and argillic lithocap exceeding 90 km 2 in area. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation is associated with a silica-pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore¦sericite alteration assemblage which is transitional downward to sericite-chlorite alteration and relict potassic biotite-chlorite-magnetite-anhydrite alteration associated with pervasively developed but weakly mineralised porphyry quartz stockwork veins. The high-sulphidation mineralisation is dominated by disseminated, vein and vug-filling enargite-bornite-digenite-chalcocite-covellite ¦ molybdenite which has overprinted an earlier phase of porphyry copper stockwork veins associated with high-level porphyritic hornblende diorite stocks. The distribution of high-sulphidation alteration and mineralisation reflects strong stratigraphic and structural controls. The high-sulphidation mineralisation covers a surface area of approximately 1.6 km by 2.0 km and forms a tabular, flat-lying to gently-dipping body between 200 and 500 metres thick. It is intersected at RL-1200 m ASL (at surface) in the northern portion of the deposit and extends down to RL-600 m ASL at the southern end. The deposit has been diamond-drill tested to a depth of 400 - 500 metres where low-grade chalcopyrite-bornite-pyrite mineralisation is hosted by pervasive quartz stockwork veins. This deep-level mineralisation represents the outer portion of a porphyry Cu system hosted by both andesite flows and the uppermost portions of high-level hornblende diorite stocks. Deep drilling to test for higher tenor porphyry Cu mineralisation is planned.

Underground fires represent a constant threat to the safety of underground personnel. Miners in the immediate vicinity may face intense heat, blinding smoke, toxic fumes, fall of ground and other direct effects of a fire. However, the vast majority of victims never actually see the fire, and are overcome either by deadly fumes in the ventilating current or by asphyxiation. The mine ventilation system, which maintains a sustainable atmosphere to the working places, can transport products of combustion with equal efficiency. Miners who are remotely situated from a fire may be forced to evacuate considerable distances, through dense smoke and fumes, or even become cut-off from escape. Additionally, miners may become confused by unfamiliar ventilation characteristics caused by fires. Conveyor belts are widely used for transporting minerals in mines as well as in many other industrial situations. Because they contain large amounts of polymeric materials their use in certain environments, especially coal mines, but also in steel works, power stations and other enclosed areas must be controlled to minimise the fire risk. Over last nine years there have been 60 fires in underground mines in the UK alone and that of these, half have been associated with conveyors. This paper summarises the results obtained from a recent research project that has developed a preliminary computational thermal and fluid dynamic model to represent the spread of flame along a typical conveyor belt used in UK deep coal mines. The results of these models have been calibrated against a series of experimental tests performed within a surface fire test gallery. An improved knowledge of the burn characteristics and rate of release of the products of combustion from conveyor belt fires will assist in the development of better fire detection and fire fighting techniques.

The mining. operations of Bougainville Copper Pty Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Mineralisation in the Panguna area was first established by C.R.A. Exploration Pty Ltd in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 760,000,000 tons of.0.47% copper and 0.4 dwt./ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July of this year has enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons per day. The concentrate will be pumped as a slurry through a 15 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 megawatt steam power station, and access roads.

Lithological units have been classified geotechnically with mechanical tests and discontinuity measurements from the GRD Macraes Limited, Macraes Gold Project and Rotowaro coal mine open pits, New Zealand. Using these measurements slope stability probability classifications (SSPC) have been quantified based on an adaption of Hack's (1998) SSPC system which places less influence on rock quality designation and unconfined compressive strength than previous slope/rock mass rating systems. The Hack weathering susceptibility rating has been modified by using the chemical index of alteration values from XRF major element analysis. Slaking and weathering is an important parameter in slope stability in the Waikato Coal Measures and Otago schist lithologies and hence a non-subjective method of assessing slaking/weathering in relation to the chemical index of alteration has been introduced. Other major components of this adapted SSPC system are the inclusion of rock moisture content and rock strength anisotropy effects on slope stability. This paper explains the systematic approach of using the adapted SSPC system to classify slope stability probability. The main modifications of Hack's SSPC system are the introduction of rock intact strength derived from Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria which has been adapted for varying moisture content, weathering state and confining pressure. It is suggested that the subjectivity in assessing intact rock strength within broad bands in the initial SSPC system is a major weakness of the initial system. Initial comparison of rock mass friction angles, cohesion and strengths derived from the adapted SSPC are compared with results derived from modified Hoek-Brown criteria, MRMR and SMR classification systems. The advantage of the modified SSPC system is that slope stability probability, maximum batter and overall slope height and overall slope angle for open pit walls can be predicted in addition to orientation dependent and orientation independent stability. Examples are provided, using the modified SSPC system to predict initial optimum pit slope designs in proposed greenfield mine sites.

In this paper the effect of humic substances (natural surfactants), electrolytes and solid particles on bubble coalescence, and as a consequence on froth stability, have been investigated. In this study two bubbles of equal size were formed and forced to collide using a novel experimental apparatus. The interactions were recorded by a high-speed camera, the images of which helped to determine the coalescence frequency and the coalescence time, as well as the mechanisms of the interactions. Two types of humic substances were used, along with three different electrolytes. Humic substances appeared to have a considerable effect on bubble coalescence, while the effect of electrolytes was minimal. Moderate and high hydrophobic glass spheres were used between two bubbles. Very hydrophobic spheres promoted fast bubble coalescence, while moderate hydrophobic spheres had no effect. Data of coalescence frequency and time is presented, as well as images of the coalescence events. The coalescence frequency was used to validate a parameter, Pf, known as the film failure frequency, used in a simulation model to predict foam height in a gas-sparged vessel. Predictions determined using Pf were then validated by experimentation.

The function of a thickener is to optimise and accelerate the process of gravity sedimentation. The desired end product (be that maximised concentrated solids or clarified liquid) determines how the thickener is designed and operated.Significant internal research, together with extensive on-site piloting, by Outotec has resulted in the determination that the application of the appropriate amount and type of shear to hindered settling aggregates can result in a substantial change to the sedimentation process. A new patented technology, called shear enhanced thickening (SET), has been developed. SET results in considerable design implications for full-scale thickeners, including a substantial reduction in required footprint and/or significant increases in underflow density.The development of SET, combined with laboratory and pilot scale verification, will be discussed along with the introduction of this technology to a number of full-scale thickeners. "Evaluating the geological risk associated with ore deposits is becoming common practice in the mining industry. While geostatistical simulation is a useful tool for evaluating this risk, the effect of applying different types of simulation is less understood. For simulation of categorical variables like rock types, available methods perform simulation in fundamentally different ways. In this study, the geological risk relevant for informed mine planning is studied with two categorical simulation methods, PluriGaussian Simulation (PGS) and Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS). Risk is expressed as a probability of repeated occurrence of lithological units in the same location across simulations. Significant differences are observed between the methods in terms of spatial distribution of risk. To identify the most plausible risk model, the input parameters at every step of both techniques are scrutinised. PGS and SIS inputs are classified as four parameters that are: fundamental to implementation of the methodfixed to enable comparison of PGS and SISdetermined by user interpretation, hence variablenormally optimised during application of PGS and SIS. The effect of parameter selection from categories 1 and 4 on the risk model is investigated using drill core data from a leucogranite deposit. A corresponding block model is created for assigning outputs from PGS and SIS. Risk models produced by either method are illustrated in a cut-out from the block model to enable bench-by-bench comparison. For PGS, risk associated with relatively rare lithologies is relatively sensitive to variation of parameters. Independent of the abundance of lithology, a location-dependent effect of variogram and vertical proportion curve parameter selection is observed, with risk increasing towards the deposit edge. Although SIS requires fewer inputs, single lithologies must be modelled in turn. Using small numbers of samples in the search neighbourhood, all risk models differ substantially. For larger numbers of samples, the risk models are similar. Overall it appears that the risk model produced using SIS is less sensitive to changes than PGS but further work is required to confirm this.CITATION:Palmer, L W and Glass, H J, 2014. Contemporary approaches to safety management appear to be failing short of meeting its mark in improving mine safety. This is evidenced by the high workers compensation, high incidence rates and fatalities. Evidence from high-risk and complex organisations points towards safety culture as being important in improving site safety. In more recent years resilience engineering has been touted as a new and innovative way of managing safety. This paper reviews and synthesises previous literature on safety culture and resilience engineering. It then highlights methods that can be used to measure safety culture and resilience engineering, and explores similarities and differences between complex organisations and gold mining to identify opportunities for more innovative approaches to improving safety in gold mining operations through safety culture and resilience engineering.

Initial coal production at Ulan was solely from underground mines. A significant increase in demand for steaming coal in the late 1970's emphasised the need to further expand production and led to the development of the open cut mine which commenced commercial production in June, 1982.During the initial stages of mine planning, feasibility and cost studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable method for coal haulage from the pit. The comparison between a conventional truck haulage system and an in-pit crushing system using a mobile crusher and moveable belt conveyor haulage confirmed that the mobile crusher and conveyor system was superior in every respect for the Ulan mining operations.Technical features and design parameters for the major items of equipment are outlined as well as operating, manning and performance assessments. Minor equipment problems were encountered during initial operation but these have since beenrectified and the plant is now capable of exceeding the design production. Maintenance and energy costs are considerably lower than originally estimated and production efficiencies are continually improving as operators develop new techniques and procedures in the handling of the equipment.

In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

When dealing with rocks in the geotechnical profession, a common activity involves providing an estimate of the intact strength. The tactile approach and descriptions of strength that apply to soils is well documented, can be readily checked through the use of a pocket penetrometer and are known to provide reliable estimates of strength. Moreover, although different soil strength classification systems are present, the bounds between classification classes are compatible across almost all documented classification systems. However, this is not the case for rock strength materials. There are numerous systems within the literature, some with different concepts, and almost all have different bounds to each strength classification. In this paper, the author presents seven classification systems for estimating intact rock strength and highlights issues in their implementation. In the new refinery, at the works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, situated at Port Pirie, South Australia, the refining routine is similar to that carried on in the old one in that bullion is progressively refined first for arsenic and antimony, then for copper and gold, then for silver, and finally for zinc. However, actual procedure differs in that each refining operation is now conducted continuously, whereas in the old refinery intermittent batch treatment was practised.The early experimental work was concerned solely with the development of the continuous desilverising process, which, in addition to continuous treatment, embraces the novel feature of conjugate solution formation with consequent production of a silver product relatively high in silver and low in lead.
