Spiral concentrators are one of the flowing film gravity concentration devices used to beneficiate coal and mineral ores. The aim of the current study is to understand the particulate flow and separation performance of an LD9 spiral concentrator using a multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model utilises the Algebraic slip mixture model to simulate particulate flows. The model employs the Renormalisation group (RNG) k-ɛ turbulence models to resolve the fluid turbulence. Initially, the volume of fluid method was adopted to track the water-air interface. Simulations were then carried out at low (0.3 and 3 wt.%) and moderate (15 wt.%) solids concentrations. Multiple particle-phase representing particles of poly sizes (75–1400 µm) and multi-densities (1450–2650 kg/m3 ) were simulated to study the particle segregation on the spiral trough surface. The numerical predictions are compared with the literature performance data at a diluted pulp flow rate of 6 m3 /hr. The results were found in close agreement. Further, the same CFD model is used to study the change in pulp velocity, streamflow rates, and separation performance at increasing solids concentration. For the same density particles, Fine particles mostly show higher volume concentration in the middle and outer trough regions, whereas coarse particles show higher volume concentration in the interior and central trough regions. It implies that the fine particles mostly segregate towards the outer region, and dense particles segregate towards the axial column.

Revised throughput rates, as a result of current mining methods and tight controls on mine dilution, have dictated a change in metallurgical philosophy at Renison Limited. Emphasis on throughput capacity increases has altered to a reduction in circuit complexity and operating costs. Extensive surveys of the gravity and cassiterite flotation circuits led to several plant modifications between August 1989 and March 1990. The coarse and fine gravity retreatment roughing tables were by-passed, the coarse gravity retreatment roughing tables were re-commissioned, the cassiterite flotation rougher capacity expanded and the gravity regrind cyclones re-configured.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit is located approximately 520km north-northwest of Adelaide, South Australia. The deposit was discovered in 1975 by the Exploration Division of Western Mining Corporation (WMC). A joint venture, to facilitate development of the deposit was formed in mid 1979 between WMC (51%) and the British Petroleum Group (BP) (49%).

The Racecourse Orebodies at Mount Isa consist of a series of parallel steeply dipping lead/zinc/silver orebodies with a strike length of up to 1000 metres. Production from these orebodies between 13 Level to 9 Level has been by a series of cut and fill stopes in two level stages, leaving a crown pillar at 11 level. Development of the 15 level to 13 level extraction stage has recently been completed. The layout consists of a series of parallel stopes over a strike length of 1200 metres. Access to the stopes is by two declines connecting the stopes with a series of crosscuts This paper describes the basic layout with development and production methods employed.

At 9.45 pm on Thursday, 12 July 1962 glass began to flow in an endless stream from a massive melting tank in a new Whangarei factory and a vital new industry was born û right on schedule. It wasn't good glass. It was ridged. It cracked. It rippled. It obstinately refused to emerge upstairs in the cutting room in one solid continuous sheet. But all through the night, drawing speeds were adjusted, temperatures changed. And on Friday morning, at 8:30, it finally came through as sheet û not perfect as yet, but sheet glass all the same. The rest is only a matter of time. Unfortunately, the buoyant enthusiasm displayed by the founders of the sheet glass industry in New Zealand, and the technical expertise of their European consultants, failed to bring the glass quality up to commercially acceptable standards and within six months, the company was in receivership. Taking over the role of producing New Zealand's sheet glass requirements, New Zealand Window Glass Company was formed as a partnership between two companies with long experience in sheet glass manufacture û Pilkington Brothers (NZ) Limited and Australian Consolidated Industries Limited. This paper sets out to identify the raw material requirements and controls necessary for the successful manufacture of sheet glass, and the availability and supply of suitable materials for use at Whangarei.

The behaviour of chalcopyrite and pyrite in the rougher-scavenger and regrind-retreatment circuits in the Warrego concentrator is discussed. The effects of change in xanthate addition on the separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite is described. The effect of the regrind mill on the (flotation rate of particles containing chalcopyrite and pyrite is discussed with particular reference to the importance of removing sub-mesh particles from the feed to the regrind mill.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.

Silica and limestone fluxing levels in copper smelting slags were studied. Copper concentrates with flux additions were smelted to matte (55.5 per cent Cu) and slag in a pilot scale submerged combustion furnace.Results indicated that oxidic and sulphidic copper levels in slags were minimised with a slag Si02 level of 36 per cent and a SiO2/CaO ratio of 5.5. Total copper losses in slags were 0.6 per cent under these conditions.To produce the desired slag chemistry, additions of bulk silica and limestone to copper concentrates of fluctuating grades were predicted numerically. The method employed the solution of two simultaneous equations, each respectively for silica and limestone calculations.The predicted flux additions were applied in a further series of tests and the resultant stages were found to be satisfactory. The method is applicable to smelting 'operations which employ two flux bins, with weigh feeders, so that slag chemistry may be controlled with the flux/concentrate feed mix.

Just as geophysics, in the form of 3D seismic and wireline logging, plays a key role in petroleum reservoir management, so too will geophysics play an important role in mining of coal, metals, and minerals in the 21 st century. The commercial and social imperatives driving greater use of geophysics are reduced costs, increased revenues, and enhanced safety. In short, superior utilisation of capital and management of risks. In relatively undeformed sedimentary environments it is possible to adapt petroleum-style 3D reflection seismic to image mines. This has been demonstrated most impressively in the Witwatersrand. Anglo-American, for example, completed a $1 million 3D seismic survey at Western Deeps in order to site a new $300 million shaft with confidence. Likewise, 3D seismic has gained rapid acceptance at Australian coal mines in recent years. Encouraged by these successes, metalliferous mining companies are supporting research in Canada and Australia, as well as South Africa, to adapt 3D seismic for more highly structured, metamorphic terranes. Because the mining industry is far more diverse than the petroleum industry in terms of commodities and geological environments, 3D seismic is not always cost-effective. A plethora of other geophysical techniques can be applied, many of which are employed in mineral exploration. Mine applications of geophysics differ from traditional exploration applications in two main ways: time scales and length scales are shorter, and boreholes are more plentiful. Borehole geophysical techniques therefore play a more significant role, both for logging and imaging. Logging systems detail the variations of in situ physical properties down the borehole at scales measured in centimetres, while geophysical imaging techniques can map features located tens or even hundreds of metres from the sensors. While geologists tend to think of boreholes in terms of chips and core, geophysicists perceive them first and foremost as access paths for instruments. Borehole logging has been employed at iron and coal mines for decades, mainly to accurately define ore boundaries in delineation holes. In base metal mines, Outokumpu implemented logging widely for orebody delineation in percussion holes in the 1980s. The benefit was a direct cost-saving, arising from substitution of core drilling with percussion drilling plus borehole logging. The practice has since spread to other companies. INCO, for example, defines nickel boundaries in blast holes at Sudbury using conductivity logs. The benefits are in the form of reduced dilution and enhanced ore recovery, flowing from a more accurate mine model. Density, natural gamma radiation, magnetic susceptibility, and conductivity are the principal metalliferous mine logging parameters because they can be recorded in both dry and water-filled holes. Sonic velocity is the premier geotechnical logging parameter, given its sensitivity to rock strength, stress, porosity, and degree of fracturing. Sonic is recorded routinely in exploration and geotechnical holes at coal mines. With the advent of slimline dipmeter, full waveform sonic, and optical and acoustic scanner tools, the role of borehole logging in geotechnical evaluations is expanding. Monitoring of strain and micro-seismic activity enhances safety during mine production. While qualitative interpretation of logs is adequate for stratigraphic identification or definition of boundaries, a wealth of quantitative information, eg density, can be derived from properly calibrated, repeatable geophysical logs. Moreover, geophysical logs can sometimes serve as surrogates for geochemical assays, and not only for magnetite and uranium. At OutokumpuÆs Kemi chromite mine, for example, gamma-gamma logging provides the basis for grade control. By reducing reliance on assaying, three benefits can be realised: reduced reliance on core drilling; lower core handling and assaying costs; and shorter turn-around times. Conventional downhole EM and borehole magnetics are used for near-mine exploration, and for ground sterilisation. Inco has enjoyed considerable success with borehole UTEM in the Sudbury Basin, for example, and Geopeko has applied three-component borehole magnetics successfully in the Tennant Creek area. Electrical techniques such as applied potential and magnetometric resistivity (MMR) are also finding application at mines. For higher resolution, borehole seismic, radio imaging, and radar have been invoked, with varying degrees of success, to delineate orebodies and map structures, or to geotechnically characterise the rock mass and identify hazards. Success mapping nickel sulphide shoots with borehole radar has been reported by WMC at Kambalda. There are no universal geophysical panaceas, and each mine imposes different geological, logistical, and economic constraints. Geophysics will not always be cost-effective. However, the greatest single impediment to expanded use of geophysics at mines has been the low level of awareness of geophysics on the part of most mine geologists, engineers, and managers and, equally, the limited understanding of mine geology and engineering exhibited by the majority of geophysicists. This myopia will be remembered as a 20th century affliction! Blue Sky areas for mine geophysics in the next ten years include integration of geophysical data acquisition with drilling, enhanced grade estimation and rock mass characterisation, and the incorporation of geophysical information into mine models using geostatistical techniques. All these advances will be predicated on an expansion of petrophysical knowledge.

"Current methods for acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation revolve around insulation of the waste from oxygen in the atmosphere with water and dry (soils and liners) covers. Both are of limited effectiveness and present significant drawbacks. Furthermore, while they reduce oxygen influx, they reduce but do not prevent ARD.The inert gas mixture (IGM) technology has been designed to overcome the deficiencies of gas transfer into tailings and waste rock materials across the surface and instead block oxidation by controlling the transfer of oxygen from the atmosphere. Inert gas is injected into the mine waste at low flow rates and the positive but low flow purges the oxygen that tends to diffuse into the sulfide waste across the surface. The positive flow of IGM compensates for inward oxygen diffusion and creates a pressure drop across the cover layer preventing inward diffusion of oxygen and, hence, acid generation.The IGM processes are evaluated in this paper: theoretically, with a review of the theory of ARD and the current state of knowledge about the performance of notably dry covers as atmospheric oxygen barriers via models to predict the performance of the IGM technique practically, with a bench-scaled experiment.The results demonstrate the effectiveness of IGM to prevent oxidation of sulfide minerals and ARD in waste rock. The laboratory experiments further identified key variables to be used to monitor performance and control efficiency of IGM, which is now awaiting field-scale application.The IGM technology is a patented process by Terraquest Technologies Ltd (Canada) in USA, Canada and Australia. The IGM technology can be cost-effectively manufactured on-site with commercially available compressors and gas filtration membranes. CONCEPTS AND REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Charters Towers region holds many keys to the metallogeny associated with the complex geological development of eastern Australia during the Palaeozoic. Tectonic, magmatic and volcano-sedimentary depositional episodes can be identified and related to the chronological development of batholithic host rocks (Clarke & Paine, 1970; Henderson, 1986; Murray, 1986). Pre-batholithic basement rocks in the north (Charters Towers Metamorphics) consist of a package of amphibolite grade schists interlayered with and intruded by gabbros and diorites (Peters, 1987). To the south (Seventy Mile Range Group) greenschist facies Cambro-Ordovician rocks overly some of the basement. The lower age of this basement is not constrained, parts of it could be as old as Pre-Cambrian. Mid-Ordovician (approx. 470 my) to Lower Devonian (approx. 400 my) age I-Type granitoid plutons of the composite Ravenswood batholith intrude the pre-batholith basement and the Seventy Mile Range Group. Igneous activity was initiated again in the Carboniferous with the extrusion of rhyolitic lavas and pyroclastics associated with porphyry and high-level intrusive complexes (Wyatt et al., 1971). The Ravenswood block is bounded by Devonian and Tertiary sedimentary sequences of mainly continental provenence.

Thirty six different commodities were recorded from 3708 mineral occurrences in the Atherton 1:250 000 Sheet area, mapped by personnel of the Queensland Department of Resource Industries. Tin, occurring in 56% of all mineral occurrences, is the most common, followed by copper, tungsten, silver, lead, gold, fluorite molybdenum, zinc and antimony. The densest area of mineral occurrences is the Herberton Mineral Field, one of the most intensively mined areas in the state.The majority of occurrences in the sheet area are fracture, fault or shear related vein or lenticular deposits, with subordinate types being pipe, skarn, endogreisen, disseminated and porphyry copper deposits. However the larger mines in the area are commonly of the subordinate types including the Red Dome gold-copper skarn, the Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill tungsten- m olydbenum endogreisens, and the Vulcan pipe tin deposit. Significant gold prospects occur in quartz-antimony veins, breccia pipes and skarn deposits associated with rhyolitic porphyry dykes. A fluorite-gold association has been noted in several areas on the western side of the sheet.Mineralised fractures are predominantly oriented in a NNW direction which is the major trend in the Hodgkinson Province. Secondary N and NE directions are also present.

The Woodcutters deposit, 65 km south- southeast of Darwin, N.T., consists of a series of veins of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena with some silver, cadmium, antimony, and arsenic minerals. The veins are hosted by the Early Proterozoic Whites Formation, a sequence of black slates with interbedded carbonate rocks and minor ash tuffs. The known orebodies occur about 300 to 500 metres above the contact of Whites Formation with the underlying Coomalie Dolomite, which consists of dolomite and magne- site. The stratigraphic setting is lithologic- ally similar to that of the Mt. Isa deposit, Queensland. The orebodies are replacement veins occ- urring along fault and dyke structures which are sub-parallel to the axes of a double-nosed faulted anticline. The orebodies are in part associated with two unusual carbonatized lam- prophyric dykes. The dykes were intruded after the fold and its slaty cleavage were formed. The ore has replaced the dykes and host rocks and is therefore late-stage hydrothermal miner- alization. The known orebodies are open at depth. A "bonanza" of high-grade ore occurs at the upper part of the largest orebody and is currently the subject of an open cut mine planning study by a consortium of companies headed by Nicron Resources Ltd.

This is particularly true today where huge fluctuations in commodity prices makes mining a perilous undertaking while the world increasingly are becoming aware of the serious threat that mans activities has on his environment. The 6 papers deal with such complex issues as safety in an underground environment; How to protect sensitive wetlands well into the next century; The enormeous waterproblems in China and conflicting dewatering/water supply needs; Disposal of contaminated water in sensitive areas and the dynamic interaction between mining companies and legislation.

The metallurgical has been discussed sufficiently for the reader to follow the course of the experiments but the actual plant has only been described in so far as it effected metallurgical treatment, since the arrangement of such a smelter is a matter of common knowledge.The lead-roasting plant consisted of Godfrey roaster, Dwight-Lloyd maehines and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. The usual treatment was in the Godfrey furnaces, followed by sintering in the Huntingdon- Heberlein pots. The paper is divided into two parts in the Godfrey furnaces and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. Operations at the Mount Bonnie gold/silver project are described. The project is based on the gossan of a stratiform and stratabound polymetallic sulphide deposit. The gossan contains approx- imately 100 000 tonne of ore grading 8g/tonne Au and 230g/tonne Ag. This is mined in an open cut, and transported to a stockpile area lkm away, from which it is fed to the treat- ment plant. The ore is crushed through two stages and fed to a fine ore storage shed, from which it is reclaimed, milled and cyanide leached in draft tube agitators. The pulp is filtered using a horizontal belt filter to recover a pregnant solution. Silver sulphide is precipitated using sodium sulphide solution, and collected as a mixed sulphide/precoat concentrate on a drum filter. The solution is then passed through carbon columns where the gold is adsorbed and is subsequently recovered by methanol desorption using a process developed by Micron Research, and electrowinning. Modifications to the treatment plant circuit based on operational experience are Described.
