Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

This paper presents information on the processing of minerals by decrepitation that can be an integral part of their mineral dressing. In the case of carbonates, processing by decrepitation is a special operation that has its objective as concentration of the oxide. Selective fragmentation of magnesite brought about by decrepitation uses pseudomorphosis which was observed at thermal decomposition of carbonates. By decrepitation of magnesite high-grade MgO concentrates were obtained with MgO contents above 80 per cent. With the sideritic ores a very important phenomenon was observed consisting in the removal of quartz in the fragmented fine-grained product which favourably affect pelletisation of the fines. The selective concentration of the MgO product brought about by thermal decomposition of dolomite accompanied with decrepitation was negligible.

A method of selective gold recovery from black sands has been elaborated which is based on the liquid phase low temperature chlorination of materials. A liquid agent mixture of sulphur monochloride S2C12 and sulphur dichloride SC12 is used. This method ensures the gold extraction either in the state of AuC13.SC14 complex salt solution or as metal. The kinetics and main physico-chemical parameters of the process (eg density, solid: liquid ratio, temperature) have been investigated. The materials investigated were quartz-insipid ride samples with low sulphur and high iron (up to 70 per cent Fe2O3) contents. Gold recovery is 96 - 99 per cent at temperatures not exceeding 100¦C. Most of the associated minerals remain in the cake. To obtain metallic gold, the resulting solution of the AuC13.SC14 salt after leaching is reduced by hydrazine with subsequent annealing. The elaborated method is remarkable for small energy expenditures owing to low process temperature and a high gold dissolution rate. The solution of sulphur chlorides and other reagents are used in closed cycle.

Successful programmes developed by government agencies and private industry have been implemented in many areas to maintain the cultural environment and still afford the needs for industrial development. The ultimate goal of such programmes should be directed toward eventual operation and management of the established industry by the local population.

"A geotechnical centrifuge can characterise and model the interaction of tailings and fluids over very long time periods by accelerating drainage and consolidation processes. This technology can be considered an environmental ‘time machine’ for designing and evaluating tailings storage projects and verifying numerical models. The Broadbent G-18 geotechnical centrifuge (2 m diameter, up to 875 rev/min) and associated equipment is a unique facility commissioned in 2011 at UNSW Australia for applied research in low-permeability materials such as mine tailings. Two centrifuge modules are available: the permeameter module for characterisation and physical modelling and the strongbox module for physical modelling.This paper presents examples of geotechnical centrifuge applications for the: consolidation of slurries and dewatering design of earthen barriers compatible with tailings chemistry prediction of contaminant mobility. The specifications and capability of the UNSW Australia geotechnical centrifuge and associated instrumentation is also presented, along with preliminary analysis of the confidence intervals associated with permeability testing of a set of samples of varying heterogeneity. Drainage velocity through a mine tailings sample increases linearly with g-level in the centrifuge permeameter until tailings consolidation occurs. Alternatively, geotechnical centrifuge experiments can be designed to limit consolidation so as to quantify permeability changes that may occur with geochemical interactions between fluids and mine tailings or earthen containments. Reactive solute transport through mine tailings can be simulated at realistic solid:liquid ratios when chemical equilibrium is maintained during geotechnical centrifuge testing. Carefully designed physical models of tailings disposal tested at accelerated gravity can therefore provide a realistic evaluation of tailings consolidation and drainage and the potential for subsurface migration of contaminants from mine tailings over long time periods.CITATION:Timms, W and Anderson, D, 2015. Kaolin used as an industrial mineral, especially that in the paper-manufacturing industry, must be of fine size, with high brightness, a low impurity content, and good crystal shape. However, in most kaolin deposits there are various impurities which have a very bad effect on the quality of the kaolin. Therefore, it is necessary to remove these impurities from kaolin ore. Owing to their similar surface properties, the separation of kaolin and iron oxide minerals, especially microkaolin and iron oxide minerals, has been regarded as difficult. The iron oxide minerals often intergrow with kaolin in fine and complicated forms, such as thin films, which make separation difficult. In order to overcome this difficulty, many workers have suggested various treatment methods and obtained great success. Based on research work by Fuerstenau (1980), Huang, Li and Hu (1984), Hui and Wei (1991), Shergold (1978), and Zambrana et al (1974), we have investigated a two-liquid flotation technique for iron removal from kaolin and obtained some success.

For many crushed aggregate producers will the finest fraction minus 4 mm represent a problem. The fine material will fetch a much lower price than the coarser products, and may even be difficult to sell in some markets. The blasting operation will strongly influence the generation of fines after both blasting and crushing. Drill hole deviation together with the drill hole diameter, powder factor and velocity of detonation are the most important blasting parameters with regard to the generation of fines. Drill hole deviation is often ignored, and many operators will just reduce the drilling pattern in order to avoid hard bottom and an excessive number of boulders. The paper presents a technical and economic analysis of how drill hole deviation will lead to an increased generation of fines in crushed aggregate production. The analysis shows that the loss of sales revenues will be much higher than the extra costs for drilling and blasting caused by compensating for drill hole deviation by putting in more holes.

The underwriting of professional negligence has proved to be an evolving science. As with most insurance products coverage offered in the past was very broad but as legal precedent demonstrated to Insurers areas of unforeseen exposure policy documents per se have become more restrictive until today the insurance market through attrition have produced a basic policy structure with various purchasable extensions which together provide insuring professionals with coverage that has proved to be adequate for their needs. The basic policy provides indemnity and protection for fortuitous negligence. In a practical sense, however, professional indemnity policies are really a defence document in so far as policy holders are relying upon the expertise of Insurers to protect them in the event that a claim is made upon them. Whether damages are awarded is in many respects a secondary consideration, the most important factor is to ensure that policy holders are protected in terms of the legal defence mechanism. By way of illustration we are currently in the process of defending a large professional firm which purchased from us a policy with a limit of indemnity of $10M. The case has been running in a Supreme Court now for 14 months and the defence costs which we have incurred on their behalf are rising close to $8M as I put pen to paper. Defence costs of that magnitude would in effect terminally cripple all but the very largest professional operations in Australia. In more recent times coverage has been provided in Australia for breaches of the Trade Practices Act and similar legislation enacted in various States. No-one really appreciated the comprehensive impact which the Trade Practices Act would have on commerce in Australia. Most professionals thought that indeed they would be exempt from prosecution under this Act. The passage of time has clearly indicated that this is not the case and we have found that it is much more difficult to defend a claim involving breaches of the Trade Practices Act than it would be to defend a claim for breach of tortuous liability.

At Binebase mineralisation is hosted within an andesitic Neogene volcaniclastic succession on Sangihe Island, Indonesia. Two major alteration types occur; an initial widespread phyllic assemblage of quartz -illite with chlorite, smectite, gypsum and pyrite, and a superimposed quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage. The phyllic alteration arose from a neutral to weakly acidic hydrothermal solution of greater than 200 degrees C, and the quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage arose from a cooler slightly more acidic fluid. This second alteration event is interpreted to have selectively replaced permeable volcaniclastic breccias and coarse lithic tuffs within the altered sequence. Gold and silver mineralisation is associated with the latter alteration, and is locally controlled by the degree of silicification and sulphide abundance. The sulphides present are pyrite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The sulphides are very fine grained with colloform and framboidal textures and were deposited contemporaneously with the bulk silicification of the coarse sediments. A large portion of the mineralised rock has been oxidised to a quartz - barite -limonite - goethite - jarosite assemblage.Coincident gold, silver and antimony geochemical soil anomalies gave the best correlation with anomalous gold and silver grades in bedrock as identified by drilling. Resistivity proved a reliable geophysical method for delineating zones of silicification.

The Effluent Treatment System at Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) was commissioned in December, 1991 and has operated satisfactorily, ensuring that aqueous discharges from PMEZ comply with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Act. The system treats both spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant, and acidic liquor generated in the gas cleaning section of the Sulphuric Acid Plant. The spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant are collected in a large catchment pond. The pond liquor, after partial neutralisation with sodium hydroxide to pH 4, and removal of suspended solids, is preferentially recycled to the Zinc Plant, for example, for washing of residues. Liquor which cannot be recycled, is treated in the Lime Neutralisation Section. The other input to the Lime Neutralisation Section is the acidic liquor from the Sulphuric Acid Plant from which mercury has been removed by contact with aluminium pellets in a fluidised column. In the Lime Neutralisation Section, the liquors are blended and neutralised to pH 10 by the addition of slaked lime. The heavy metals and most of the fluorine are precipitated. The precipitated solids are removed in a thickener with part of the thickener underflow being filtered. Most of the thickener underflow is recycled to generate solids that settle rapidly and filter well. The filter cake is returned to the Zinc Plant for the recovery of contained heavy metals while the thickener overflow is discharged to the Derwent River.

The current and future requirements for an underground mine information management system are being met with a flexible, value-engineered approach to mine information/communication infrastructures. El-Equip has developed and delivered to over fifty mines around the world an integrated, high capacity, radio-based leaky feeder communication system called MultiCOM. To meet the requirements of recently developed advanced information management technologies, such as production and ventilation management, the system has evolved to support simultaneous mobile and fixed information delivery services over an integrated single cable system. The following paper will review how MultiCOM is enabling information/communications technology to cost-effectively implement mine monitoring and control applications. Applications described in this paper include mobile vehicle production tracking, vehicle location, ventilation system monitoring and control with integrated ventilation system simulation. The techniques described are leading the world in terms of flexible and value-engineered applications of technology in the underground mine.

Silicon is a vital element in many products today, such as electronic components, solar devices, high-quality alloys, and many others. The growing global demand highlights the need for the development of sustainable production methods to meet this demand as an alternative to the current carbothermic reduction, submerged arc furnace (SAF) based process. An alternative to this is the aluminothermic reduction of quartz in a CaO-SiO2 slag, which not only reduces direct carbon dioxide emissions but also promotes the utilisation of secondary raw materials such as quartz fines, aluminium dross and scrap as well as secondary alumina (SA) from dross recycling. In the current study, the effects of SA and CaF2 additions to slag on the resulting metal composition and metal yield were explored. Results were compared with thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.1. Experimental results show that, in agreement with thermodynamic simulations, the silicon content of the alloy is increased, while the Ca is decreased for starting slags where CaO-SiO2 is partly replaced by CaF2. Similarly, the addition of SA to the initial slag results in an alloy with a higher silicon content.

The capacity of chlorine based solutions to rapidly and effectively dissolve coarse gold in oxide ores is well established. The inherent advantages of chlorine are high dissolution rates (10 - 100 times those of cyanide), and low cost. The high dissolution rates mean that coarse or poorly liberated gold may be dissolved over relatively short periods and hence ore particle size may cease to be such a critical factor. The cost of size reduction to allow adequate gold liberation in order to achieve an adequate gold recovery is less of a consideration when using chlorine than in traditional plant or heap leaching cyanide-based treatment systems.Because chlorine based solutions capable of dissolving gold evolve an unpleasant vapour phase with the potential for significant chlorine losses into the atmosphere, traditional heap leaching with active solutions being sprayed onto prepared heaps is not possible. The ore must be covered and the solution may be introduced beneath that cover through prepared injection `wells' and recovered through production 'wells'. The pit is flooded with active solution beneath an overburden or cover with the solution migrating from the injection 'wells' to the production 'wells' over a period of around five - ten days.

Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. The comparison of the forms is demonstrated with a case study that reveals the specific features of the new scheduling approach and the benefits of its implementation in the exploitation of Australian gold resources.CITATION:Halatchev, R, 2013. Up to 80 per cent of the copper in a bornite ore can be quickly leached with percolating acidified ferric sulphate solutions. The upper limit for rapid copper extraction is set by the conversion of bornite to slowly dissolving chalcopyrite. The dissolution occurs in two stages: a rapid linear initial stage, followed by a slow, non-linear stage. The initial step is largely controlled by the rate of oxidant supply (Fe2(S04)3); temperature is not an important variable during the initial reaction. The second leaching stage is controlled by chemical and physical factors and is temperature dependent. The initial copper leaching rates are insensitive to both the concentration of the ferrous sulphate reaction product, and the sulphuric acid concentration.

Sensor-based particle sorting of gold ores is the masterclass of preconcentration. The technical challenges of a grade in ppm scale makes a direct detection with currently available technology in milliseconds impossible. Consequently, the detection and classification of particles into ore and waste classes relies on detectable proxies which are the foundation for the classification. These must be reliable and repeatable across the ore bodies processed in future. A sensor-based particle ore sorting equipment must therefore be calibrated systematically by understanding the gold deportation in different lithological groups. Also, it must be in best operational state to minimise possible misplacement. The technical challenges are met by a stringent financial regime governing the business case. Many gold ore sorting projects require a stable grade of gold in the rejected waste significantly below 1gr/t. Two examples are introduced in this paper:  The pilot results and operational experience of X-ray transmission (XRT)-based particle ore sorting for pebble sorting of sulphide associated ore;  Laser-based particle ore sorting for pebble circuit of an orogenic, quartz associated gold ore. Usually, sensor-based particle sorters are installed in the crushing section of a plant. However, for large capacity plants, the number of equipment required, and the associated material handling costs result in significant capital and operating expenses for plants with 1200tph run-of-mine capacity. As a conclusion, it was decided to investigate sensor-based particle ore sorting applied to the pebble stream of two existing semi autogenous mills.

Three selected iron ore samples from the major bedded and channel iron deposits of Western Australia were analysed using a scratch test commonly used in the oil and gas industry. The portable commercial equipment dubbed Wombat cuts a groove on the surface of the sample with a cutter under imposed depth of cut and cutting velocity. The normal and tangential components of the force acting on the cutter are recorded with a high degree of precision (about 1N) at fine spatial resolution of about 20 measurements per millimeter.The intrinsic specific energy inferred from the scratch test measurements is found very well correlated with a classical measure of strength such as the uniaxial compressive strength, for over 300 sedimentary rock samples.The results obtained on the iron ore samples are comparable to those obtained on oil and gas sedimentary rocks. This method could provide an objective and semi-automated measurement of material strength and brittleness in iron ores that can possibly be correlated to the lump to fines ratio.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. In 1991, the first horizontal raise drill hole in Australia was successfully completed by Australian Raise Drilling Pty Ltd (ARD) at the Perseverance nickel mine of Western Mining Corporation's (WMC's) Leinster Nickel Operations in Western Australia. At that time, WMC were experiencing considerable difficulties in developing the horizontal drill drives through the orebody using conventional drill and blast techniques. Following the success of the initial hole, a further two holes were drilled as part of the evaluation program. The technique has proved so successful that it has been accepted by WMC for on-going development of drill drives at Perseverance.This paper describes the program. It relates how the project evolved, the modifications that were required to the equipment used, the performance experienced during the program and the future of the method in this and other applications.
