A multicommodity exploration programme was mounted in the 1970s by CRA Exploration Pty. Limited over a major part of the southern Murray Basin in Victoria. Commodities sought were brown and black coal, gold, uranium, diamonds, titanium and zirconium rich heavy minerals, and base metals. An area of 40 000 km2 was held under exploration licences by the Company. Exploration techniques used were literature research, airborne magnetics and gamma ray spectrometry, drilling, and geophysical well logging. Targets were defined in both the Tertiary basin sediments and the underlying Palaeozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks. Although exploration is continuing, large resources of brown coal and low grade titanium rich heavy minerals have already been discovered. Exploration for uranium was abandoned in accordance with statutory requirements. The search for significant resources of the other commodities has not been successful.

The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

The main difference between this technique and other simplified methods is that a non-uniform boundary condition is allowed for. This permits radiative heat transfer between surfaces of different wetness in addition to evaporative and convective heat and mass transfer.

Most geostatistical techniques applied to the estimation of ore reserves assume relatively unifonn grade and thickness within an ore deposit environment. In shear-hosted mineralisation this rarely occurs. The distribution of mineralisation is controlled by the kinematic and geometric variation within the shear zone. Although the kinematic variation is dependent primarily on the temperature (and consequently the depth) of formation of the deposit, the geometric variation appears to be relatively insensitive to this parameter. Shoot mineralisation is controlled either by the intersection of secoodary shear planes (brittle deformation) or the stretching lineation of the mylonitic fabric (ductile defonnation).Once the shear geometry is clearly identified, it is critical to review the distribution of grade and thickness of mineralisation. The practice of cutting high-grade intersections without reference to the shear model leads to underestimation of the amount of gold in the deposit. High-grade shoots may occur as pipe-shaped bodies within the system; their identification is essential for both resource estimation and mine planning purposes.

During the past 18 months a rock mechanics project has been in operation at Renison Limited. The project was established to identify and investigate key problem areas that would affect future production at the Renison mine. An in-house approach was adopted, using shall compact equignent, to investigate ground behaviour. Information on the rock stress field was considered to be particularly important for an understanding of ground behaviour. A high horizontal stress component exists, which enables large flat dipping spans of hanging wall to be opened up, with support being provided by post pillars. The amount of support provided by these post pillars has been found to be low.

The Ranger Uranium Mine is surrounded by a World Heritage National Park. The strict environmental controls under which the mine operates are based on scientific and social requirements. Release of non-process storm runoff water to the Magela Creek during flood discharge and under controlled conditions has been identified as Best Practicable Technology for the operation of the water management system. Social and political factors have limited this release to a wet season with an Annual Exceedance Probability of one in ten. The first-generation trigger mechanism was based on a percentile analysis of monthly rainfall. The second-generation trigger is based on cumulative monthly volume increase in the retention ponds and is considered to be more applicable to the operation of the mine water management system.

As well as breaking and moving rock, blast energy sets up a seismic wave in the ground which can cause significant damage to rock structures and buildings and disturbance to human occupants. This seismic ground vibration is potentially most damaging when its dominant frequency coincides with the resonant frequency of a structure, leading to high amplification factors between the input ground vibration and the resulting structural response. This paper outlines methods of identifying the resonant frequency of structures. It also describes a practical numerical method for the modification of blast designs to reduce the ground vibration energy in critical frequency ranges. The method is illustrated with two recent case studies.

Since pyrite is a semiconductor, the relationship between the leaching rate and the semiconducting properties is of interest. In order to investigate this relationship, a pyrite concentrate (95% FeS2) was oxidized at 90¦C (363 K) in an acid solution containing 100 g/dm3 H2SO4 and 1.0 to 25.1 g/dm3 total Fe. The suspension potential (Pt vs. SCE) was maintained at the desired values, within the range 0.40 to 0.70 V, by controlled additions of a KMn04 solution during leaching. The results were analyzed using a simplified kinetic expression. The rate constant was independent of the Fe concentration, while it increased with suspension potential. Partly oxidized samples were then prepared at varying fractions of reaction. After removing the elemental sulphur formed, they underwent thermoelectric power measurements using a packed bed lying in a temperature gradient. The value of thermo- electric power increased from about 0 to 30 pV/K in the early stages of oxidation. The results obtained are compared with those for chalco- pyrite reported in a previous paper.

General Gold was discovered in quartz veins at Wiluna in 1896, and the first lode was discovered in 1904. Since 1896, some 2.5 million ounces of gold have been produced from the Wiluna area. The mining operations at Wiluna are 100 per cent owned by Wiluna Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiluna Mines Ltd. Oxide and sulphide gold ore is extracted by conventional open pit mining techniques, and ran-of-mine ore is processed through two separate circuits. The oxide circuit has a capacity to treat 600 0(X) tonnes per annum and the sulphide circuit has a capacity to treat 400 (XX) tonnes per annum. Additional gold is won by dump leaching sub-grade oxidised ore and by retreating of primary ore flotation tailings from previous operations. Testwork carried out in 1990 indicated the viability of leaching dumps of run-of-mine oxide ore, and in June 1991 Signet Engineering of Perth, WA, was awarded an EPCM contract to construct a nominal 2.5 million tonne dump leach facility, for a total construction estimate of 51.75 million.

Underground development drill and blast practices have generally remained unchanged for decades. Historically, development optimisation has focused mainly on the application of perimeter control products in order to reduce overbreak, and efficiencies in development cycle times to increase advance rates. In today’s environment of ever increasing operating costs and lower ore grades, it has become even more critical to focus on the optimisation of drill and blast in development mining. It is a crucial component in ensuring mining schedules are maintained, but more importantly achieving the objective of getting to the orebody in the shortest possible time.This paper will focus on the development optimisation process used in a trial at Xstrata’s George Fisher Mine in North Queensland. Not only did the trial include the typical optimisation areas of charge loading practices, perimeter control methods, drill design standardisation and quality control processes, it also investigated the significance of delay accuracy with regards to perimeter control and drill design optimisation.One of the key measures of the trial was a comparative analysis between baseline development and development with the staged introduction of optimisation elements using 3D photogrammetry as a validation tool. A detailed cost analysis between the various stages was also a key measurable of the trial.The results of the work undertaken at George Fisher have shown that the accuracy of electronic detonators can produce significant benefits in development blasting. When combined with standard optimisation philosophies a substantial reduction in overbreak, ground support requirements and development cycle times can be achieved, whilst still being able to reduce the overall development operating costs.CITATION:Kovacs, J, 2014. A new synthetic reagent of the mercaptobenzoxazole class, 5- methyl-2-mercaptobenzoxazole, has been studied. This reagent exhibits powerful selective collecting action towards copper sulphides present in several complex ores, as demonstrated both by laboratory and pilot plant tests. Industrial production is expected to start in the near future. The way this reagent reacts with pure chalcocite has been studied utilising in situ FTIR techniques, adsorption tests, electrokinetic potential measurements and Hallimond cell flotation tests. The FTIR studies have indicated the nature of the surface phase. Adsorption isotherms obtained by the rest method have revealed the quantitative evolution of surface products, permitting the determination of surface coverage at various reagent concentrations. The electrokinetic potential has been utilised to verify the stability of individual species in diverse concentration ranges. Correlation of the results obtained has provided indications on the chemical interaction of this reagent with the surface and on the surface Arrangement.

The current suite of bulk mining explosives has been available to the industry for over 20 years. The flexibility and performance of ammonium nitrate based emulsion blend explosives were accepted by the mining industry in the early 1980s. These water resistant explosives rapidly displaced the water gels and slurries developed during the previous two decades. However, since the 1980s there has been no equivalent step change to the basic formulation or application of bulk explosives, although there has been a continuous process of refinement with respect to stability, handling characteristics and most significantly, cost. In the 1980s explosives supply contracts were awarded based on technical evaluations, usually accompanied by field trials. Technical personnel from both mining companies and explosives suppliers dominated the negotiations and there was a strong focus on explosive energy and blasting requirements. Today, explosives from alternative suppliers are difficult to differentiate on the basis of energy so the focus has shifted to aspects of service and price û bulk mining explosives are now largely treated as a commodity and the negotiations are dominated by commercial personnel. Commercial pressures from large mining companies have seen a substantial reduction in the real price of explosives. However, this has come at a cost. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, emulsion formulations have changed. In general they are not only cheaper, but also less energetic. Powder factors have had to increase to achieve the same blasting results, especially in hard ground. It is debatable whether the mining companies have achieved all of the economies they were seeking. This paper discusses these issues and argues that the mining industry would benefit from taking a more technically driven approach to meeting their blasting requirements. Recent trends towards more open contracts between the mining companies and their suppliers can be extended to explosives. To achieve this, mining companies will need to acquire sufficient technical knowledge to take a more pro-active approach to specify the characteristics of the explosives required to maximise the economic performance of their operations.

Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

Laminar flow furnace techniques and thermal analysis were used to study the combustion of Kambalda nickel concentrate and Collie coal. The study was made to ascertain the suitability of the latter as a replacement for the fuel oil currently burnt in a flash furnace at the Kal- goorlie Nickel Smelter. The coal was found to ignite at temperatures between 500-600¦C which was the same as that required for the most reac- tive component of the concentrate, namely py- rite. The rates of reaction of both the coal and concentrate were dependent on oxygen con- centration. Sulfur dioxide hindered the combus- tion of concentrate and of coal, the effect on the concentrate being the more pronounced. The effects of moisture content and the tendency for spontaneous combustion of the coal were also noted.

Prob- lems occurred due to delay in supply of essen- tial rock support materials from overseas and alternative methods using locally available materials were developed. Several major rock- falls and rock movements occurred and remedial measures are outlined.

Orebodies at Ok Tedi contain a number of different fluorine bearing minerals. Some of these minerals report to concentrate and are responsible for the presence of the penalty element, fluorine, within the concentrate. Previous analytical work has tended to examine geological samples for content, rather than determine the metallurgical behaviour of the different mineralogical species. This investigation utilised X-Ray Diffraction combined with Scanning Electron Microscope / Electron Microprobe to identify the fluorine bearing minerals in flotation test products. Seven fluorine bearing minerals were identified, viz., talc, phlogopite, amphibole (tremolite and actinolite), sphene, apatite, biotite and clay. Talc was found exclusively in the skam ore type. Phlogopite and amphiboles (tremolite and actinolite) were found to occur in both skarn and porphyry ores, while sphene, apatite, biotite and clay were found only in the porphyry ores. Of the fluorine bearing minerals observed, only talc exhibited natural hydrophobicity to any significant degree. Phlogopite and the amphibole minerals were found to be hydrophillic, whilst the remaining minerals occurred in insufficient quantities to determine the flotation behaviour. Ok Tedi copper concentrate fluorine content prior to skarn ore treatment in the mill (typically 350ppm) was previously identified as deriving from phlogopite, while talc was believed to be the source of intermittent high concentrate fluorine contents when skarn ores were treated. This paper provides supporting evidence for this belief, and reports the nature of fluorine bearing mineral flotation behaviour.

FOR some years past it has been usual to specify high-grade copper for use for many purposes, but the practice of specifying zinc of a high degree of purity for certain purposes is of comparatively recent origin. It is a practice, however, which is extending ag the effect of the impurities in zinc on products manufactured therefrom becomes widely recognized.The notes hereunder are intended to briefly survey the principal uses to which high-gr.ade zinc is being put, and, wherever possible, to indicate the effect of the impurities normally present in the lower grades of zinc.In the United States zinc is graded into five divisions, known respectively as "High-grade" "Intermediate" "Brass Special" "Selected," and "Prime Western." The maximum amounts of impurities allowed in the various grades are indicated in Table I,which is compiled from data published by the American Society of Testing Materials:In addition, it is specified in an cases that the slabs shall be reasonably free from surface corrosion or adhering foreign matter. Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.
