The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. It is a great pleasure to accept the invitation to open this Joint Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. It is the second invita- tion to participate in the Conference that I have accepted. When it was being planned, the President wrote to me to invite me to be one of the speakers in one of the technical sessions. I wrote accepting the invitation, and when my present appointment was announced, there was a nice question about the earlier commitment. The upshot of it all is revealed by the present arrange-., ment: you get me as opener and the more sub- k stantial speech is to be given by Professor Rupert Myers, my friend and former colleague who will not only be able to contribute from the standpoint of an experienced University admini- strator, but will also speak from a professional training and experience much more closely relat- ed to the concerns of this Conference than I possess. Though it is a joint meeting and the speakers will include distinguished figures from North America, I hope that since the venue is Australia, I may be permitted to speak with an Australian emphasis. I have recently had a brief glimpse of part of the Australian mining industry. In the course of a journey through the Northern Terri- tory we-my wife and I-visited Gove, Groote Eylandt, and Tennant Creek. At Gove we saw the remarkable Nabalco development in bauxite and alumina and the very impressive town plan- ning development at Nhulunby, the major man- ganese enterprise at Groote Eylandt, and the gold mining activity at Tennant Creek. For lay people like us, a gold pour was arranged at Tennant Creek and that was a spectacular sight. On earlier occasions, and before my present appoint- ment, I had visited Mount Isa and the Utah fields, and Queensland Alumina at Gladstone. I have not seen the cradle of the modern mining industry, using cradle perhaps loosely, at Broken Hill, nor have I seen the great Pilbara develop- ment, nor Weipa. This is not for want of generous invitations and it is my hope that within the not too far distant future this will be rectified. Then there is the Australian petroleum industry and the great industries which make their products from the minerals mined which I have yet to See.

A review is given of progress made to- wards the development of personal gravimetric dust sampling for risk assessment on South African gold mines. The present strategy is critically examined on the basis of principles for assessing health hazard from dust exposure. Reasons are advanced for replacing the konimeter with a gravimetric system based on full shift personal sampling. Constraints imposed by local characteristics of gold mines are used to illustrate the difficulty in finding suitable instrumentation for measuring personal exposure to respirable silica.

In recent years there has been a trend among mining companies to diversify exploration and development away from the countries that have dominated mining activity for the latter half of this century. With some exceptions, this trend is accelerating and is a function of the recognition that many parts of the world, with no previous exposure to modern exploration, are endowed with considerable mineral potential. In addition coincident with changing political and economic circumstances, many countries have recognised the benefits of attracting international mining investment and have radically changed policies, fiscal and legal regimes so as to encourage exploration and mining. Some countries, however, have not readily accepted mining for cultural or social reasons and have yet to make effective changes to mining legislation. For historical reasons, other countries may have little or no direct experience of western economics, nor may they fully recognise the need for stability and competitive fiscal and legal systems to attract foreign investment. Not all ventures in new countries have been commercial successes and there have been some lamentable and recent lapses from grace. Company strategies, company standards and management objectives can also vary widely from company to company. What may be an acceptable risk or rate of return for one may be completely

Process optimisation and continuous improvement are usually acknowledged when making a process more effective, efficient and transparent. During the last few decades, thousands of companies around the world have used total quality concepts in order to establish a continuous improvement process in their companies. Typically these companies apply some kind of Kaizen-type tools and expect results in the short term; however, the great majority of companies are poorly implementing these continuous improvement programs.Usually the most common reasons for failure of the program are lack of commitment from leaders, lack of discipline and engagement from the team to follow process and lack of clear targets for the program. When the results do not come at the expected timeline, it is common to simply drop the current process and apply a different approach from another company or consulting firm.This paper will explore some successful cases of companies that have invested time and effort to establish a reliable and sustainable process of continuous improvement. The focus will be case studies of mines and smelters around the world that use the plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycle to increase productivity with the best services and lowest costs. Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles. Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

Change in mould slag composition during casting of medium alloy steel is caused by the redox reaction between molten steel and mould flux. Mould flux generally contains a certain amount of SiO2, but elements such as Al, Mn and Ti in high/medium alloy steels reduce SiO2 in the mould flux, causing remarkable changes in the composition of the mould slag. As a result, the properties of the mould slag change greatly as continuous casting proceeds. This causes casting instability, process abnormality and casting defects. Effect of Ti as an alloying element in steel on mould slag is studied extensively through high temperature laboratory measurements and plant measurements. TiO2 gets picked up by the mould slag up to 3 per cent during casting a steel grade containing 0.1 per cent Ti. This changes the mould slag composition and results in decreasing the slag viscosity by up to 10 per cent and decreases slag break temperature by 30–40°C.

The Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) for the simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead was developed at Avonmouth from the 1930's with activity intensifying in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Present operations are based around the No.4 furnace which was built in 1967. Development during the 1980's has been driven by the need to sustain operations at low metals prices and has been aimed at reducing manning whilst increasing output. Although hit by several major plant disruptions, progress has been steady, culminating in a ú10 million capital programme in 1988?89 to upgrade the operation. The most important technical developments, reflecting the needs of the 1990's have, in the sintering area, included improvements to feed conditioning and sinter quality, a 20% uprate in production capacity by debottlenecking, and pilot work leading to the installation of a Boliden-Norzink mercury removal plant. In the smelting area the ISP furnace has been rebuilt, with a redesigned bottom section to eliminate earlier operating sensitivities, and to achieve higher blowing capability, and at the zinc refinery the columns have been rearranged for more flexible operation and higher capacity.

The resource estimation of lateritic deposits, such as Aurukun, presents specific issues related to the lateral changes in thickness and elevation of the various horizontal layers (or zones) within the deposit where the x and y dimensions are orders of magnitude greater than the z dimension. The objective was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) block model that retained the vertical and lateral variation inherent in deposits of this type to allow full optimisation of the production plan without prior selection of an economic portion (enriched bauxite layers) of the profile at the resource estimation stage. The Aurukun bauxite deposit is held by Chalco Australia Pty Ltd (Chalco) and forms part of the world-class Weipa bauxite province, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The bauxite is predominantly pisolitic with an upper boehmite-rich zone and lower gibbsite-rich zone. The bauxite consists of both in situ and reworked domains, is overlain by a thin soil horizon and has kaolinite clay as a transitional base. A portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was utilised on site, in addition to elemental assay, on each drill sample to determine the mineralogy, in particular levels of boehmite, gibbsite, kaolinite and reactive silica. As part of the scope of work, a field program was undertaken using large diameter Boart Longyear sonic drilling to acquire detailed density measurements across the deposit to allow compliance with Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) reporting requirements. Interpretation of the stratigraphy was conducted on a hole by hole basis with definition of the zone layering based on stratigraphy, geochemistry and mineralogy. The zone boundaries were then modelled as 3D surfaces and used to constrain a block model. The block model estimation used the ordinary kriging method, with the estimation done in unfolded space and then refolded, therefore maintaining the zones irrespective of thickness or orientation. The unfolding process converts the real-world positions for both blocks and informing samples to a scaled position relative to the roof and floor of each zone. Analysis of the data and variography were also undertaken in unfolded space. The x and y dimensions are unchanged, but the z dimension is a relative position. The effect of the unfolding and limits on number of samples per hole is to æpushÆ the informing sample search sideways but within the stratification, rather than vertically. This honours the strong vertical zonation within the bauxite profile. The JORC Code requires that the stated resource must have æreasonable prospects for economic extractionÆ. This is a qualitative rather than quantitative definition. A number of selection criteria to define a resource roof and floor were developed in consultation with the project engineers and owners to meet these criteria. The vertical selection of material to include in the resource highlights the variation in the development (and destruction) of the bauxite profile from area to area within the deposit.

Financial risk analysis provides the tools to examine the uncertainty of capital decisions in new mining ventures. This paper explores the methodology by which financial risks can be studied and quantified. The most commonly used risk evaluation methods, such as sensitivity analysis and discount rate adjustment, are presented as an introduction to a more comprehensive discussion of stochastic methods of discounted cash flow analysis using Monte Carlo sampling. The discussion is illustrated with examples of a stochastic discounted cash flow. The advantages of Monte Carlo sampling in risk analysis are discussed together with its problems, particularly those originating from the correlation amongst the variables that determine the economic output of a mining venture, and the difficulties created by insufficient data, imperfect knowledge and complexity. The paper also surveys the most commonly used software used in risk analysis.

Blasting in the mining industry is being transformed, and can no longer be treated as an art or a practice purely dependent upon experiences of individuals. Examples of key drivers that have demanded consistent and more accurate blast results are initiatives to control pit-wall damage to help mine steeper pit slope angles, to control damage to underground opening operating in close vicinity of the open pit mine. Such situation exists at Rampura Agucha open pit lead zinc mine, which is producing 5.7 Mt/a of ore and has started its underground part, which is slated to produce initially 2–2.4 Mt/a and 4.5 Mt/a in the near future. The open pit mine is currently working at 326 m depth and is designed to reach 421 m deep. It has been planned to operate the underground mine maintaining 50 m parting from the planned ultimate level of the open pit mine.Presently, open pit and underground mines are being operated simultaneously. The present average depth of underground working lies between 370 and 410 m below the surface level. Sometimes explosives up to 95 978 kg are being detonated in a blast round in open pit mine. These blasts are often apprehended as a danger to the safety and stability of underground openings. It was decided to document the impact of open pit blasting in the openings of underground workings, so that preventive measures may be taken for the safety and long-term stability of the underground mine. The impact of 86 open pit blasts has been documented in the underground openings and 258 blast vibration data has been recorded. The vibrations were recorded simultaneously in the roof, side walls and at floor levels. The highest levels of vibrations were recorded in the roof and the lowest levels at the corresponding floor levels. The pillars experienced lower level of vibrations than the roof. Blast designs were optimised at open pit mine to control vibration in view of long-term safety and stability of the underground openings. The vibrations generated due to detonation of explosives with shock tubes and electronic delay detonators have been recorded in underground openings for comparative assessment. Ground vibration recorded at roof, pillar and floor were analysed separately and threshold value of the vibration for the safety of underground workings has been determined based on the rock mass rating of the roof rock.CITATION:Singh, P K, Roy, M P, Paswan, R K, Shekhawat, L S and Joshi, A, 2015. EMF measurements were performed in the temperature range of 933-1095 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead and lead-tin alloys with tin in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 6 atom per cent. The oxygen in the Pb-O system was varied by equilibrating with (PbO) slag, and that in the Pb-O-Sn system was varied with the addition of lead oxide. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to evaluate the self interaction parameter and ternary interaction parameters at different temperatures, to yield: E8(pb) = 97.35 - 113.27 x 103/t Eo(pb) = 139 - 20.616 x104/1' Quasichemical formulation was employed to yield Inf to reveal the effect of tin on oxygen in lead. Results have been predicted on the basis of classical models and those obtained using the QCT approach of Alcock and Richardson at Z=2 have been found to agree with the experimental Data.

The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management.

The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) underground mine is situated adjacent to the Great Artesian Basin in North Queensland and within a fracture zone. Underground development commenced in February 2008 and has extended to approximately 1000 vertical metres below the surface.Groundwater has been encountered in numerous locations throughout the mine, predominantly on the eastern side of the orebody and often related to fault structures. Most of the groundwater encountered has been managed with conventional pumping systems; however, on occasions large water inflows have been encountered, which have had a significant impact on the planned development of the mine. Some of the intersections encountered had the potential to compromise the mine from a combination of high temperature (over 45°C), high pressure (3500 kPa) and high flows (50–100 L/s).This paper describes three case studies where significant water inflows were encountered and then controlled by the injection of cementitious grout into the rock mass. The case studies are the 1650 mid-shaft heading, the 1325 shaft access decline and the 1625 to 1475 fresh air rise (FAR) raise bore. Each case study includes a brief description of the event that occurred and the grouting equipment and techniques developed to enable mining to continue.The paper also describes the development of a hydrogeological map of the mine, the probe-hole regime used for high-risk headings and the required processes and systems to inject both cementitious grouts and polyurethane resin into the rock mass.CITATION:Purvis, T, Calverd, J and Greve, A-K, 2014. The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) is undertaking a large research project involving partners from industry, universities and government, which aims to develop the necessary chemical and structural understanding of geopolymer materials made from waste products for them to be used to capture a significant market share of the concrete business for a given industrial region. We are investigating the suitability of a range of soluble silica-bearing waste streams for use as geopolymer concrete feedstocks. In order to utilise a variety of waste streams, either singly or blended, an understanding of the role of secondary metal ions (Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, etc) in the geopolymerisation process is essential. A range of experimental and analytical techniques is therefore being used to better understand the structure-chemistry-property relationships of geopolymers. Currently, we are investigating geopolymers made from a variety of waste streams (fly ash, kaolinite, red mud, etc) available in the Kwinana Industrial Region, Western Australia. This paper will detail how the basic scientific research underpinning the project is vital if waste streams of varying composition are to be successfully used in a commercial concrete product and the regional synergies required to develop geopolymers from waste streams.

Reliable prediction of longwall gas emission sources and rate plays a critical role in mine ventilation and methane drainage capacity planning. Over the years, Australian longwall mines have been using the historic Winter method and the Flugge method in modelling specific gas emissions (SGE). The predicted results often experience high discrepancies from the operational reality. To improve gas emission prediction, post-mining gas contents were measured in several mines in Qld and NSW by safely drilling core holes into the longwall goaf. The results revealed many new insights into gas emission characteristics from different coal seams and the drawbacks of the European methods in their use in high-production gassy Australian longwall mines. Based on measurement data, a new, time-dependent gas emission prediction model has been developed. Considering several factors such as caving, desorption and production rate, the new model can predict more accurate and meaningful gas emissions to meet today’s needs in mine gas emission management. A case study is provided to demonstrate the application of the new SGE model.

The paper studies the flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as: bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, respectively, using the new effective collector - H205 which has been developed by Baotou Research Institute of Rare Earth, and describes their flotation properties. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH values, Rare Earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium and calcium bearing intergrowth minerals (barite and calcite) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be successfully obtained by H205 as collector with water glass as depressant. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and reagent dosage on the flotation were investigated in the test. Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation separation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for H205 and RE cations by theorical analysis shows that H205 formed chelate complex with RE cations and adsorbed on the surfaces of RE minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by water glass can be explained as: H2Si03, HSi03 and gummy SiO2 hydrolised from water glass are selectively adsorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, under pulp pH value 8.5 to 9.5.

To determine whether 130 felt earth tremors around Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire U.M, which also experienced severe surface fissuring, were caused by coal extraction, a surface seismometer array was established around Thoresby Colliery. Over the next year, 785 microseismic events were detected. The spatio- temporal seismicity patterns are clearly associated with the commencement, continuing extraction and closure of faces. Of particular note are events which locate at the surface and appear to be related to the active fissuring. Events occur within days of commencement of production and cease when production finishes, with good correlation between face advance and hypocentral position. Naturally occurring microseismic events have also been detected up to 1 km ahead of active longwall faces in the Midlands using triaxial geophone packages grouted into the seam together with a surface seismometer in the top of the borehole. The quality of these data were very high and guided waves can clearly be seen with the dispersive characteristics associated with seam waves. In one experiment more than 2000 events were detected in only two days of monitoring even in a relatively noisy surface environment. This paper demonstrates how very accurate locations (5 10 metres) can be generated using three-component digital data from only one borehole. The surface seismometer and the borehole P-wave onset can give extra precision for the height of the event relative to the seam. The event distributions give a dynamic, three-dimensional image of the developing patterns of fracturing above, below and ahead of the longwall face with important implications for roof control, subsidence prediction and gas Migration.
