THREE angles are required to specify the orientation of a crystallite with respect to a physical reference frame. The distribution of crystallite orientations in a polycrystal is thus a function of three angular variables. The most widely used experimental techniques for studying orientation in polycrystals lead directly to the pole figure representation, i.e., the distribution of the poles of certain crystallographic planes in terms of two angular variables. In recent years1-5 methods have been developed which permit determination of the (three-angle) crystallite orientation distribution from several (two-angle) pole figure distributions. In this work Roe's method has been applied to the study of orientation in hcp materials. The method is illustrated for commercial purity titanium sheet (Ti-70) which was cold rolled (65 pct reduction), annealed at 1450°F for 3 min, and air cooled. The grain shape was observed to be equiaxed after this treatment. EFFECTS OF PHYSICAL, CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC SYMMETRY In Roe's method the crystallite orientation distribution, w(?,?,F), is expanded in a series of generalized spherical harmonics 11(?,?,F) = E E E W^Zirmtye-tote-in* [l] 1=o ,,,=-I ,,=-I where { = cos 8. The set of Euler angles employed here is illustrated in Fig. 1. The axis for each rotation is denoted by a double arrowhead. The positive sense of each rotation is that of a right-handed screw advancing in the direction of the double arrowhead. The X, Y, and Z directions correspond to the rolling direction, cross direction, and normal direction, respectively. In the initial orientation (10.O), (12.O), and (00 . 1) planes are perpendicular to the X, Y, and Z directions, respectively. The IC/ rotation about the Z axis is carried out first by rotating X into X', Y into Y', and leaving 2 unchanged, i.e., Z' = Z. The 8 rotation about the Y' axis is carried out second by rotating X' into X", 2' into Z", and leaving Y' unchanged, i.e., Y" = Y'. The I$ rotation about the Z" axis is carried out last by rotating X" into X"', Y into Y"', and leaving 2" unchanged, i.e., 2"' = 2". Any specified orientation of the X'", Y'", and Z'" crystal-fixed axis system relative to the X. Y, and Z physical axes (rolling direction, transverse direction, and sheet normal direction, respectively) can be obtained by appropriate IC/, 8, and (F rotations. The Zl,, of Eq. [l] are the Jacobi polynomials, augmented by the square root of the weight function. The Zl,, are symmetric in m,n, i.e., Zl,,= Zlnm. For orthotropic physical symmetry and hexagonal crystallographic symmetry, the coefficients, W!,,, of the series are all real, W!mn = Wzfi, = Wlm~ = Wlfi~, 1 and m are even and n is restricted to 6k, where k = ...,-2,-1, 0, 1, 2, .-.. The solubility of oxygen in zone-refined iron was determined in the temperature range.from 881" to 1350°C. The solubility in a iron at 881°C ms found to be about 2 to 3 ppm; in y iron, the solubility was found to increase from about 2 to 3 ppm at 950°C to about 25 ppm at 1350°C. The permeability of oxygen in an iron -0.1 pct Al alloy was determined in the y iron range, using an internal oxidation technique. By combining the permeability and solubility data, the diffzisivity of oxygen in y and a iron was calculated. The oxygen diffusivity in solid iron may be s~immarized as follows: 8820 For 6 iron and IN a recent paper, Hepworth, Smith, and Turkdogan1 reported on the solubility, permeability, and diffusivity of oxygen in 6 iron, together with permeability data for oxygen in a iron. In the present investigation, similar measurements were made in the ? phase region. In addition, a solubility measurement was performed in the a phase region to permit calculation of the diffusivity of oxygen in a, iron. References to early work on this subject are given in the previous publication.' EXPERIMENTAL Solubility Measurements. The oxygen solubility was determined by equilibrating cylindrical samples 0.3 in. diam by 14 in. long of zone-refined iron in water vapor-hydrogen gas mixtures. The zone-refined iron was prepared by B. F. Oliver of this laboratory, using an apparatus and technique described elsewhere.2'3 Six zone-melting passes were used to achieve a total impurity level of about 30 ppm. Of this 30 ppm, the combined nickel and cobalt content was about 20 ppm, oxygen was 4 ppm, and all oxidizable impurities less than 1 pprn each. A vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire was used for the experiments. The temperature was measured before and after each experiment with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. In the gas train, flow rates of hydrogen and argon were measured with capillary flow meters, and the resulting mixtures were passed through a column containing 90 pct oxalic acid dihydrate and 10 pct anhydrous oxalic acid to obtain predetermined ratios of H2O to H2. The vapor pressure of H2O above this mixture as a function of temperature is well-known.4 The exit gas was ana- lyzed periodically for H2O, and good agreement (+3 pct) with the calculated composition was obtained. The zone-refined iron specimens were held in the furnace for a sufficient length of time for equilibration, e.g., 18 hr at 1350°C and 1 week at 881°C, then quenched in a brine solution. After removing the surface oxide from the samples by machining, duplicate analyses were obtained by a combined vacuum fusion-infrared method; oxygen analysis was reproducible within 2 ppm. Permeability Measurements. The permeability of oxygen in alloys containing about 0.1 pct A1 was determined by internal oxidation and measurement of the subscale thickness as a function of time. The experimental alloys were prepared by adding aluminum to electrolytic iron (grade 104A plastiron) that had previously been vacuum-carbon deoxidized. The resulting ingots contained about 20 ppm O, 100 pprn C, 40 pprn Si, 50 ppm Mo, 20 ppm P, 20 ppm S, and 20 pprn Zr as the principal impurities. After hot rolling the ingots to 1-in.-thick slabs, specimens were machined from the stock in the form of rectangular plates, 4 by 5 by 2 in. The general procedure for the permeability experiments was the same as those for the solubility measurements. The specimens were cooled in a reducing atmosphere rather than quenched, however, in order to maintain a clean surface for measurement of the sub-scale thickness. This measurement was made on a polished cross section of each specimen, using a microscope with a micrometer stage. The inclusions formed at the lowest temperature 1033°C were too small to be seen with an optical microscope. An electron micrograph showing the size and shape of individual particles is shown in Fig. 1. The dark band in the picture is a boundary between two subgrains. The subscale thickness in these samples was measured with an optical microscope after heavily etching in 2 pct nital, which gave contrast between the subscale and the unoxidized zone.

THE study of chemical reactions of liquid steel and basic open-hearth slag involves a complex slag system of at least eight important components, and often a number of others. In initiating an experimental program on the equilibrium relationship of slag and metal, it became evident that but little progress could be expected in the interpretation of the complex slags until an understanding had been gained of the simpler liquid systems composed of a limited number of slag constituents. The simplest system that in any way resembles open-hearth slag must contain lime, silica and iron oxide. Attempts to produce in an induction furnace slags containing only these constituents have met with serious limitations because of the solubility of refractories in the slag. Thus in acid-lined furnaces the slag is always saturated with silica and consequently contains between 48 and 63 per cent of this component. In basic-lined furnaces an undesired additional component, magnesia, is introduced to the extent of some 3 to 15 per cent, depending upon the acidity, sometimes with disastrous results to the furnace. Thus in a magnesia-lined furnace, Fetters and Chipman1 found it impossible to prepare slags in which the ratio (CaO + MgO)/SiO2 was less than that corresponding to the metasilicate (approximately 0.8: I). Between this composition and that of the true acid slags lies a field of composition about which very little is known and which cannot be explored by any ordinary means. This circumstance, as well as the desire to study the more basic slags in the absence of magnesia, calls for the development of a method by which slags may be brought into equilibrium with molten metal without coming in contact with refractory. Such a technic has been provided by the rotating induction furnace developed by Barrett, Holbrook and Wood.2 Three modifications of the rotating furnace were described by these authors. The first was essentially a rotating refractory cylinder containing the magnesia crucible, which was itself heated by a graphite crucible. In the second, only the magnesia crucible rotated, the cylindrical graphite heater being stationary. In the third, the coil and crucible revolved, and the metal was heated directly by induction. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Furnace The furnace used in this investigation differed from previous designs and may be considered a fourth modification of the original rotating furnace. Two major trends in the coal industry today focus attention on the need for heat-drying equipment of a simpler, more flexible and less expensive type than has been considered standard equipment for drying coal. These trends are: I. The tremendous growth in the use of mechanical equipment to load coal both in underground mining and strip mining, which necessitates efficient mechanical cleaning of the fine as well as the coarse coal and thus means a growing tonnage of washed fine coal? with its attendant moisture problems. 2. The growing consumer demand for the smaller sizes for use as domestic stoker coal, with increasingly rigid specifications covering size, ash, and moisture analyses. ACCEPTED PRACTICE In the past, when, for example, 4 in. too coal has been washed, there was little trouble in producing a washed product 4 to o with a satisfactory resultant moisture. The 4 to 3/8-in. could be taken from dewatering screens at a surface moisture ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 per cent, depending upon the size consist. The 3/8-in. to o coal was generally dewatered satisfactorily with centrifugal driers, to final surface moistures from 5.5 to 8 per cent, again depending upon size consist. The centrifugal type of drier has definitely proved itself to be the most economical type of machine to handle coal approximately 3/8 in. to o as recovered by dewatering screens or drainage elevators with 15 to 25 per cent surface moisture and turn out a product with moistures as stated above. Sometimes such moistures (5.5 to 8.0 per cent) in the product are satisfactory. If not, an ultimate moisture, lower than 3 per cent, is seldom required and the centrifugal drier removes 70 to 85 per cent of the total moisture to be removed. In certain districts there has been a growing tendency to circumvent the use of centrifugals or other types of driers, by dewatering over screens of the wedge wire type and wasting all the finer sizes. Sometimes all the minus 28-mesh has been wasted and often the size wasted has been as large as 1/8-in. By wasting these finer sizes, a lower moisture can be obtained in the finished product, but taking into account the cost of the tonnage so lost, plus the added cost of ultimately disposing of this wasted tonnage, often the cost will be greater than the cost of heat-drying in a modern plant, which makes possible the recovery of all the tonnage. Moreover, with the moisture standards for domestic stoker equipment even these wasteful approaches to its solution do not solve the problem and there remains only the alternative of heat-drying. HEAT-DRYING Until about four years ago, heat-drying of coal at the preparation plants was confined chiefly to drying the fine sizes (approximately 3/8 in. to 0). Occasional

A detailed description is given of an experimental method for determining relative permeability of porous media to gas. Results are presented for natural and synthetic cores. The experimental data for two and three phase systems are compared. The reproduci-bility of the equilibrium gas saturation ii demonstrated and the effects due to a variation in rate of gas flow are discussed. An attempt is made to correlate total permeability and rock textural factors with relative permeability to gas. Capillary pressure curves obtained simultaneously with the relative permeability curves are shown to be equivalent to those obtained in conventional displacement cells. INTRODUCTION The advances in petroleum reservoir technology during the past decade have made increasingly apparent the desirability of a simple, rapid, reliable metliod for obtaining relative permeability data on small cores. Such data are needed in order to study fluid mechanics in porous media and for the more refined reservoir behavior prediction calculations now under development. IN all branches of the chemical industry, corrosion plays a very costly part unless it is suitably com-batted, and as a result it is probably correct that chemical and design engineers are more corrosion conscious in the field of chemical industry than in others. Most metals occur in nature in combination with other elements. The refined or reduced state to which man converts them for his use, by removing the combining elements, leaves them in an unstable condition. Therefore in most of the media to which the metals are exposed they are constantly combining with the constituents of their environment, or in other words they are continually being corroded. Similarly, nonmetallic materials are corroded by undergoing chemical change. The rate at which corrosion takes place varies widely from metal to metal and medium to medium. In practically all cases the corrosion of metals in solutions (electrolytes) is electrolytic in nature and the rate of corrosion is dependent on many factors such as temperature, pressure, internal stresses, galvanic action, metal-ion concentration, and so on. In the chemical industry substances must be handled which are particularly corrosive to materials of construction. At the chemical plants of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd. (otherwise known as Cominco), situated at Trail, B. C., Canada, the following are some of the materials that have to be handled: Gases. Sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and oxides of nitrogen. Liquids. Solutions of ammonium sulphate, ammonium sulphite, ammonium nitrate, caustic soda and potash, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluo-silicic acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, aqua ammonia, and formic acid. Solids. Gypsum (containing phosphoric acid), ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, phosphate rock, caustic soda, potash, and phosphate fertilizers.

DESPITE the loss, by enemy conquest, of a high percentage of our normal sources of supply for tin, the position of this important metal is easier today than that of rubber and a long list of other strategic materials, many of which are produced in this country. Actually, there is no shortage of tin for essential war purposes, owing to a strict control of its use, to increasing considerably the amount of secondary tin available, and to the foresight of the Government in authorizing the Reconstruction Finance Corp., as early as June, 1940, to acquire and produce certain critical and strategic materials of which tin was one of the most important. The construction of the Longhorn Smelter on the Gulf Coast in Texas is an important part of this program.

This paper discusses a study performed to evaluate the feasibility of transferring formal system safety assessment technology to the mining industry. A representative listing of formal techniques was evaluated to select the most useful methods for the mining industry to implement. Criteria for selecting methods included the interests, needs, and requirements of mine safety officials. This paper describes one of the selected methods, preliminary hazards analysis (PHA), and illustrates the analysis procedure for a mining example. This study also includes an assessment of the adaptability of selected methods to a user-interactive computer system for use by mine safety personnel. This paper includes a description of a conceptual computerized PHA-type safety program that facilitates performance of the safety analysis and can accommodate updates and revisions as necessary.

THE electron diffraction pattern as seen in the electron microscope represents an approximately plane section of the reciprocal lattice. Identifying the zone axis of a diffraction pattern is often laborious for a crystal of low symmetry, especially if several crystal orientations are present. A program has been written in FORTRAN II (Version 2) for the IBM 1620 which will assist in plotting out reciprocal lattice sections. The calculation is performed by choosing a zone axis [uvw] and determining the d spacings and angle between the planes (Ow - v) and (wO - u). (This procedure is varied slightly for zone axes with Miller indices equal to zero.) Cartesian coordinates for the reciprocal lattice points are then calculated for these planes and for (ww— [u + v]). Any reciprocal lattice points within the parallelogram formed by the origin and these three points are then computed. The input and output are best described by use of an example (Monoclinic ZrO2) used in the author's work. Input consists of two cards: 1) The crystal parameters: a, b, c, a, 8, y, e.g., 5.1477, 5.2030, 5.3156, 90.000, 99.380, 90.000. 2) Three numbers, D, E, F, e.g., 5, 3, 3.0710-the first is the limit of the sum (u + v + w) considered; the second limits the absolute value of u, v, and w to (E- 1), e.g., 2, so that zones (221) would be the highest order considered in this example; the third, F, is the required constant, yL. Output is in the format shown in Table I. The reciprocal lattice sections may then be plotted on standard graph paper and compared with the unknown diffraction pattern. PUBLIC UTILITY GAS PRODUCTION IN 1802, William Murdock first used retort coal gas to light his house and the Boulton and Watt plant where he was employed. For the next three quarters of a century coal served as the principal raw material for the manufacture of city gas for general distribution. Coal continued to hold its predominant position for another half century after Prof. Thaddeus C. Lowe developed the first practical method of enriching water gas with cracked-oil vapors in an integrated operation. This position, however, was no longer maintained through the medium of direct carbonization of coal in retorts but as a result of using anthracite or coke as the generator fuel in carburretted water-gas machines. The early water-gas machines were extremely crude and the consumption of both oil and generator fuel was very high. However, the cost of installation was considerably lower than for any coal-gas system having the equivalent gas-making capacity, the labor involved was small, and the water-gas machine could be started up and shut down quickly. It thus proved very useful as standby equipment and in taking peak loads from the coal-gas plants. The flexibility of the water-gas machine, furthermore, made it possible to change the candlepower of the gas readily to suit the required conditions. Later, when calorific value replaced candlepower as the standard of gas quality, the water-gas machine was found to be equally flexible in keeping the city gas under complete and convenient control. No basic improvements were made in the Lowe carburetted water-gas process until 1898, when means were added to provide for regular reversals of the flow of steam through the fuel bed. By judicious proportioning of the quantities of up-run and down-run steam, it became possible for the operator to control the hardness and position of the clinker to a degree that previously had been unattainable. Also in 1898, the first by-product coke plant in America to supply city gas was built at Everett, Massachusetts. Later many other by-product plants, of greatly improved design and capacity, were built, but not primarily for city-gas production, chiefly because of the relatively high investment cost per unit of gas made. The operations described in this paper are those of the flotation plant of the Valley Forge Cement Co. at Conshohocken, Pa., and concern the use of a particular cationic reagent—namely, DP-243. The role of this reagent in this plant may be better understood by first considering the purpose of beneficiating cement rock in general and the specific problems at the Valley Forge plant. The ultimate purpose of beneficiating cement rock is to obtain a kiln feed of the desired chemical composition in a form suitable for the most efficient kiln operation. The chemical composition is governed by the type of cement to be made. Before government restrictions (the purpose of which is to simplify operations during wartime) limited the types of portland cement a manufacturer is permitted to produce, five principal types of cement were generally recognized by the industry. They are based upon chemical and physical specifications proposed by the American Society for Testing Materials, federal and other governmental agencies, state highway departments, water boards and other users of large quantities of cement. The physical as well as chemical specifications for any particular type of cement necessitate proper proportioning of the major components—that is, the silica, alumina, iron and lime—and it is necessary to establish and maintain definite limits for each in the raw mix. The manufacturer must then prepare a kiln feed of a composition that will yield a final product that will fulfill the desired specification. This step is further complicated for kilns using coal as fuel, by the amount and analysis of the ash introduced. The amount and nature of the dust lost during burning will also affect the composition of the kiln feed. The problem of preparing a kiln feed of the desired chemical composition is not a simple one, and it is the final product that governs the methods used to obtain such a feed. For example, in starting with a material deficient in lime for the mix sought, it may not be sufficient to raise it to the required lime content. The other constituents must also be present in the proper proportions. In some cases, it may be necessary to raise the lime content to a point greatly exceeding that of the final mix, then, by addition of one or more other materials lower in lime, obtain the mix. The rock used at the Valley Forge plant is a metamorphosed argillaceous limestone of the Jacksonburg formation, the same formation as that of the Lehigh Valley cement rock (which occurs approximately 50 miles north), and its oxide composition is similar to that of the latter. The only practical differences between the two are that, as a result of metamorphosis, crystallization of the Valley Forge rock is considerably coarser and it contains less carbon than the Lehigh Valley rock as well as slightly more magnesia in the form of magnesian mica. The calcium carbonate content of the various strata in the Valley Forge quarry ranges from about 65 per cent to over 85 per cent, the average for the entire quarry being somewhat under the requirement for manufacture of cement, which usually is from 75 to 76 per

The operations described in this paper are those of the flotation plant of the Valley Forge Cement Co. at Conshohocken, Pa., and concern the use of a particular cationic reagent—namely, DP-243. The role of this reagent in this plant may be better understood by first considering the purpose of beneficiating cement rock in general and the specific problems at the Valley Forge plant. The ultimate purpose of beneficiating cement rock is to obtain a kiln feed of the desired chemical composition in a form suitable for the most efficient kiln operation. The methods about to be described have been tested in practice, and are believed to be specially adapted to such extended topographical surveys as mining engineers in particular are sometimes called upon to execute. The writer was recently employed; together with Mr. H. O. Flipper, to survey the properties of the Plata-Reina de Sonora Mining and Milling Company, situated in the mining district of Las Planchas, District of Magdalena, State of Sonora, Mexico. These properties, now owned by an American corporation, of which M. W. Evans, of New Orleans, is president, and Richard A. Pomeroy is resident superintendent, are famous in the history of Mexican mining, as the place where planchus, or bolas de plata were foulld about the beginning of the last century. Ward, the English CILargh d7Affaires in Mexico from 1826 to 1828, writing at that epoch, says: "The idea [that the ores in the north of Mexico were richer than those in the south] probably originated in the discovery of the famous bolas de plata [balls of silver] of Arizona [Planchas de Plata de Arizona, a stock-ranch in northern Mexico], in the beginning of the last century, which was, and probably still is, believed in Europe to be one of those fables with which mining countries always abonnd. But the attention of the present government of Mexico having been drawn to the subject, a search was made in the viceregal archives, by order of the president, for the correspondence which was known to have taken place respecting it in the year 1736. This correspondence I have seen, and I have in my possession a certified copy of a decree of Philip the Fifth, dated Aranjuez, 28th May, 1741, the ohject of which was to terminate a prosecution, instituted by the Royal Fiscal, against the discoverers of Arizona, for having defrauded the treasnry of the duties payable upon the masses of pore silver found there. The decree states the weight of the balls, sheets and other pieces of silver discovered (bolas, planchas, y otras piezas de plata), to have amounted to 165 arroba, 8 pounds, in all, 4133 pounds; and mentions particularly one mass of pure silver, which weighed 108 arrobas (2700

Edward W. Parker,* Philadelphia, Pa.—At the New York meeting of the Institute a year ago, Mr. R. V. Norris presented a paper on anthracite mining costs, in which he gave the results of an intensive study of this subject by the Engineers' Committee of the United States Fuel Administration. Within the last 30 days, the Federal Trade Commission has issued an official report on the same subject, which covers a longer period of time and comprises statistics of realization values and margins that were pot comprehended in the paper by Mr. Norris. As, however, the data utilized by Mr. Norris formed also a part of the basis for the report of the Federal Trade Commission, a brief digest of the latter may not be out of place at this meeting. The report of the Federal Trade Commission covers primarily the two calendar years 1917 and 1918, divided into five periods which furnish opportunity for the study of how the influence of certain definite factors affected either the cost of production or the price, or both, during the 24 months. The first period, January to April, 1917, which may be considered the basic period, comprised the 4 months in 1917 during which the wage agreement of May, 1916, without modification, was in effect. During this period, the labor cost on fresh-mined coal is placed by the Commission's report at $1.79 per gross ton, the total cost at $2.66, the average realization at $3.29, and the "margin" (sales realization over total f.o.b. mine cost) at $0.63. The second period covers the four months from May 1 to August 31, during which time the first of the supplemental wage agreements (supplemental to the agreement of 1916) was in effect. It was also the period during which the summer discounts were in effect and when prices were practically fixed by a voluntary agreement between the operators and the Federal Trade Commission. It was, further, the period in which the 75 cents differential on prepared sizes permitted to the individual operators by the Federal Trade Commission began; at that time, also, on account of war conditions an unusually large quantity of steam sizes were marketed at exceptionally good prices. Widespread wildcatting for new supplies of natural gas and the beginning of importation from the southwest characterized the petroleum industry of West Virginia during 1944. Within the state, drilling for oil did not increase but. more gas wells were completed than in any previous year since 1937. Out of 40 wildcats drilled there were 25 gas discoveries and 15 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 40 wells. The proved limits of several oil pools were slightly extended by marginal drilling, resulting in 1300 acres of new oil territory, although no distinctly new pools were found. At least four new gas pools were assuredly discovered and various successful wildcats indicate future pools or wide extensions. The new proved gas territory, in definite new pools and definite extensions, is about 34,000 acres. A considerable net decline of proved oil has occarred and probably a slight decline of proved gas reserves. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 918 new wells were drilled, resulting in 71 oil wells with 613 bbl. of daily new production; 577 gas wells with 305,372,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 142 dry holes. Also, 107 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 22 bbl. and 12,327,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 8.6 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 529,241 CU. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 15.47 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 19.63 per cent. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the Oil Weekly as 3,069,000 bbl., as compared with 3,349,000 bbl. in 1943. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 200,000, 000,000 cu. ft., as compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 223,789,000,000 cu. ft.t in 1943.

THE question, what is the best proportion among weight, fall, and speed of stamps, is one which has not yet received thorough and systematic examination. In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally, the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted. The safest experiments are those made in the same mill, by changing first one and then another condition of working; but this is seldom possible for such conditions as weight and lift of stamps, and only within narrow limits for their speed. We may eliminate of friction, transmission, and generation of power, in the case of stamps, by measuring the power actually developed by their fall. Thus, the weight, multiplied into the fall in feet, and the number of drops per minute, gives us exactly the number of foot-pounds exerted by each stamp. Dividing by 33,000, the number of foot-pounds per minute in one-horse power, we have the horse-power per stamp, from which the effective power of the whole mill may be obtained. Dividing the amount of rock crushed daily by the effective horse-power, gives us the daily amount per horse-power ; and this is the best measure that can be obtained for the effectiveness of the stamps. A complete discussion of the subject would require us to determine the exact influence of the discharge, etc., and the exact resistance offered by different classes of rocks, for both of which points the data are wanting.
