BASH, Philadelphia, Pa.-In order to make a definite check on the emissivity of crucible steel under works conditions, a test was planned and executed by the plant of the Midvale Steel Co., by a Sub-committee, as follows: Five crucibles were put in a crucible furnace with-the normal charge and were treated in the same manner as a number of others that were charged at the same time; the only difference was that the five cur-cibles had lids with.2-in. holes in the center. It was thought that after the crucibles were removed from the furnace a reading could be made through the hole in the lid with the optical pyrometer and that such a reading would give the true temperature of the steel as black-body con-ditions should prevail inside the crucible. If after obtaining the true temperature, the crucible lid were removed and the steel poured into the ladle, the apparent temperature could be taken by sighting on the steel stream and the emissivity obtained from the two temperature values. Such a test was carried out with five crucibles. About a third of the crucibles charged into the furnace with the five experimental ones were first drawn from the furnace and poured into the ladle. A simplified method is described for the prepauatior~ of comnposite samples for determination of one quadrant of an X-ray pole figure of a sheet material by the Schulz reflection method. Other special conzposite sampling methods were used to investigate specific areas of the pole figures. Plotting nets for these sampling plans were drawn by a computer. Step-scanning techniques were used to obtain detailed information about specific regions of a pole figure. Satisfactory pole figures were obtained for large-grained (0.5 to 1 in. diam) sheet materials. COMPOSITE sampling techniques for preparing one quadrant of an X-ray pole figure have been reported by a number of authors.'-5 All of these methods are similar in that they use a composite sample prepared by stacking and holding together coupons cut from a sheet material. The schulze reflection technique is applicable to the composite sample so that only minor corrections are needed for defocusing and absorption effects. Also, a relatively large area of a sheet is sampled through the use of multiple cross sectional pieces. In general, sampling methods necessary to obtain a composite-type specimen have been formidable enough to discourage their use in routine pole figure determinations. This paper presents a versatile sampling technique which is simpler than those previously described along with an accurate method for obtaining stereographic plotting nets for any orientation of a composite specimen surface. A step-scanning technique is used to obtain more quantitative determinations of specific regions in pole figures, and the composite technique is satisfactorily applied to determine pole figures of very large grained sheet materials. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS TECHNIQUES Mueller and ~nott' first proposed a technique for obtaining one complete quadrant of an X-ray pole figure by using a sheet sample and six different composite samples in which the individual coupons were aligned and held together by two types of jigs. Data from the seven different samples were overlapped to obtain a single quadrant. ~eieran~ and Lopata and ~ula~ obtained a complete quadrant of a pole figure from a single sample prepared by forming a cube from coupons cut from a sheet. These coupons were bonded together using an epoxy cement, and a cut was made at 54.7 deg to the normal, transverse, and rolling directions of the sheet, Fig. I. The normal direction of the cut face projects into one quadrant of a stereographic projection at equal angles to the three principal orthogonal reference directions mentioned above. X-ray reflection data obtained along a spiral path in physical space could then be plotted on a stereographic net offset 54.7 deg from the normal, as shown in Fig. 2. A rotation about an axis representing the surface normal is designated as a, and a rotation about an axis lying in the plane of the surface is 4. From Fig. 2 it is apparent that a tilting angle of no more than 55 deg @ is necessary to obtain the complete quadrant. ~eber~ devised an improved sampling technique by cutting coupons 45 deg to the rolling direction of a sheet, stacking and bonding these with an epoxy cement at an angle of 54.7 deg to a reference plane, and finally grinding and lapping a flat specimen surface parallel to this plane. An important consideration of this technique and that of Lopata and ~ula~ is variation in the diffracting power of the specimen surface due to the bonding medium. While any composite-type sample will have some such variation due to boundaries between coupons, the problem can be minimized by elimination of the bonding medium and by avoiding prolonged etching times which could lead to significant inter lame llar attack of the coupon faces. An approximate theoretical model is proposed to quantitatively predict freezing ranges Tf and hydrostatic tensions P developed within solidifying binary alloys, allowing for a certain amount of diffusion of solute in the solid during solidification. The maxima in ATf and AP as functions of composition are shorn to occur at smaller solute concentrations than would be expected from the equilibrium diagram, and are found to correspond closely to experimentally observed maxima in microporosity. THE freezing range of simple binary alloys appears to have been little studied, except for certain indirect observations on the defects, particularly microporosity and hot tearing, arising in long freezing range materials. Two theories relating to the freezing range of alloys and its effect upon porosity are reasonably well established, and appear to have been held in isolation from each other: a) From purely equilibrium considerations early researchers expected that an increase in solute content of an alloy should increase the freezing range (defined here as the equilibrium freezing range ?Tf = Tl-Ts where TL and Ts are the liquidus and solidus temperatures, respectively) and thereby increase the width of the pasty zone for a given set of conditions. This in turn should increase the difficulty of feeding the residual liquid through the dendrite mesh to compensate for the contraction on solidification, and consequently tend to increase the observed amount of porosity. From qualitative observations on steels Czikel1 reports an increase in porosity with increasing carbon content up to 0.46 pct C. More careful measurements by Whittenberger and Rhines2 on fourteen different alloy systems showed an approximately linear relation between ?Tf and pct porosity (although unfortunately the precise experimental data is not given). b) Conversely however, other authors3"5 propose that porosity is reduced by the presence of increased amounts of eutectic present at the final solidification temperature. Lees7 and Bochvar6 claim that the hot tearing of alloys is similarly reduced. Scheuer8 has put forward a theory to explain this effect, Fig. 1. The argument is basically that solidification progresses on a plane front through a relatively open dendrite network and is thus (the argument is not developed more explicitly) easier to feed. One would expect effect a) to operate at low solute contents, and b) to be important at higher solute contents, so that at some critical composition a max-

President Howe : It is not so clear to me that the facts which Dr. Waldo brings forward really argue that the nature of the combination between copper and aluminum differs from that of the combination between copper and zinc or copper and tin. As regards electric conductivity, I suppose that the fact, which he thinks points to a special intimate kind of union between aluminum and copper, is that the line in his Fig. 1 is neither straight nor uniformly curved, but that its curvature varies rapidly, not to say abruptly. But we find just such variation in like curves for the copper-zinc and copper-tin alloys. Thus, a slight addition of zinc or tin to copper causes a change in color wholly out of proportion to the quantity added; and, as we add zinc or tin to copper, the tenacity rises very greatly, only to fall off abruptly with further additions of either of these metals. Results fit the expression: D= 1.58 x lgs exp-------==-----) cm2,sec THE diffusion coefficient for hydrogen in the metastable ß-phase titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, 11 pct Cr, and 3 pct A1 was measured as part of an investigation of the effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium alloys. Several theories on the mechanisms of hydrogen embrittle-ment include diffusion of hydrogen at ambient temperature as an important step in the embrittling process.'-5 In hydrogen-contaminated a-ß titanium alloys, it has been postulated that the rate-controlling step may be the rate at which hydrogen diffuses from the ß phase to stress- or strain-nucleated brittle hydride platelets at the a-ß interface.' However, embrittlement of the all-ß alloy investigated in this work may proceed by a different mechanism, since this alloy can be embrittled without the formation of detectable hydride platelets.6 Troiano has suggested that in this case the mechanism of delayed failure or embrittlement is similar to that proposed for high-strength steel, i.e., repeated crack initiation caused by a decrease in bonding energy as hydrogen diffuses to points of high tri-axial stress at the root of a notch. In both types of alloy the rate of embrittlement is believed to be controlled by diffusion of hydrogen in the ß phase. Accurate hydrogen-diffusion data in the vicinity of room temperature should therefore be of some assistance in understanding the mechanisms of embrittlement in these two classes of titanium alloys. Diffusion of hydrogen in pure titanium has been studied by Wasilewski and Kehl7 at temperatures above 500°C. Their measurements on diffusion in the ß phase were extended below the ß-a transformation temperature (882°C) to approximately 600°C. This was possible because of the 8 stabilizing effect of hydrogen. No results at lower temperatures have been published and there are no data in the literature on hydrogen diffusion in the ß -phase alloy used in this program. Hydrogen diffusion in metals is generally investigated by measuring the rate of transport of hydrogen past a solid-gas interface, i.e., by absorption, permeation, or degassing-rate measurements. These methods produce accurate diffusion data when bulk diffusion is the rate-determining step in the over-all process. However, at the lower temperatures of interest in hydrogen-embrittlement studies or under conditions where surface films are present, the measured rates may be surface-controlled and the calculated diffusion coefficients will be in error. Surface effects were eliminated in the present work by using a modification of the common welded-couple technique m which two bars with uniform but different compositions are joined before the diffusion anneal." The same type of step change in the initial concentration vs distance curve was produced by electrolytically hydrogenating thin-strip specimens which had been electrically insulated over half of their length. Concentration vs distance curves were determined, after appropriate diffusion-annealing treatments, by vacuum-extraction analyses of transverse samples sheared from the strips. Diffusion coefficients were calculated by the methods of Grube.M This technique was feasible because of the large concentrations of hydrogen which can be charged into p -phase alloys without the formation of hydrides15'16 and because of the extremely low degassing rates observed when hydrogenated titanium alloys are heated in air. In shaft sinking for cod mines, the cost item greatly influences the method adopted. This holds true especially when soft material must be traversed. The average life of a coal mine is short. This is due either to the limited area of the coal basin or to the great expense of maintenance and haulage underground when the entries are extended a considerable distance from the hoisting shaft. Therefore, the engineer in opening a coal mine is confronted with the fact that the cost must be kept within certain bounds else the venture will prove unprofitable. For this reason he may be prohibited from adopting certain safe, but expensive, methods that are used in sinking caissons for foundations, driving transportation tunnels, or other work of permanent construction. A common method of sinking through difficult ground employs the aid of a steel shoe pushed ahead of the shaft timbers. Another is the drop-shaft method. These two methods were used in sinking the main shaft and the air shaft of the Eagle No. 3 mine, at Des Moines, Ia., and the following data show the relative success and cost of the two methods of sinking under the same conditions. The drilling industry long has been plagued by failures in the bottom few joints of surface and intermediate casing strings. This paper presents an analysis of the various possible causes of failure and concludes that failures are caused by short-lived, high-energy torque impulses delivered from the drill string through the bit while drilling out the cementing plugs, cement and floating equipment. The magnitude of these torque impulses is shown to be a function of the rotational momentum of the drill string, and a method is derived to calculate the magnitude of these impulses. The available methods of strengthening the bottom joints are reviewed. It is concluded that, while present methods are ineffective, a combination of improved procedures for strengthening and minor restrictions on drillout practices will prevent failures. Introduction In most cases, failure in the bottom few joints of casing strings is not discovered until electric logs record that the bottom one, two or three joints have parted from the casing string and slipped down the hole. However, in some cases the parted section of casing uncovers a high-pressure or lost circulation zone, or shifts laterally restricting the passage of drilling equipment. In these instances extensive remedial work is required to realign the parted pieces and seal the exposed formations. Several methods used to strengthen the bottom joints of casing strings include locking set screws in the couplings, putting wedges in special collars, welding straps across the couplings, welding the couplings and, most recently, using epoxy resin-based, thread-locking compounds. Since none of these techniques has eliminated the problem, this study was initiated to find the cause of failures and to evaluate the available methods of prevention. Mechanics of Casing Failures An analysis of the various possible causes of failure indicates that the casing is unscrewed rather than broken and that therefore failure must occur before the shoe is drilled. Since there is no general agreement as to the causes of casing failure, some possible mechanisms were ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. DALLAS, TEX. considered in this analysis. Failure of the bottom joints of casing can occur by only one of three types of stress: tension, torsion or bending. The possible mechanisms of failure were evaluated by determining the forces required to cause casing failure by each of the stresses; and, where applicable, the possibility of failure by fatigue was considered. For casing to part under tension requires a downward load of more than the tensile strength of the casing. The lightest API weight H-40 grade casing requires a bit load on the bottom of the casing of 27,000 to 34,000 Ib per inch of bit diameter (Table 1). Since maximum drill collar weights seldom exceed 10,000 Ib per inch of bit diameter, it is apparent that casing strings cannot be parted by the downward load of the drill string. The second mechanism considered was failure by bending. This mechanism requires that the lowermost casing joints be free to be deflected laterally until the bending stress exceeds the strength of the pipe. To fail, the casing (at a height L above the shoe) requires a force and deflection' at the shoe of To deflect the casing shoe with the drill string obviously requires a dog-leg at the casing shoe. This dog-leg must have a rate of change equal to or greater than the change in curvature of the deflected casing, which is given by

In this paper, the author derives a series of formulas from basic principles and illustrates the application of these formulas to practical grinding charge problems. The paper establishes the nearly proportional relationship of mill power to charge level and shows how this relationship can be used to advantage in the design, manufacture and operation of grinding mills. The procedures outlined offer a rapid means of anticipating the power requirements for a given charge or determining makeup charges for a given power reading. The theories which have been developed concerning the dynamics of grinding have been motivated largely by the desire to derive workable formulas for the accurate determination of grinding mill power. This accurate determination has always been handicapped by the large number of variables to be considered, some of which are mill diameter, length, speed, liner design, grinding charge and material density, volumetric mill loading, internal friction, and charge size and gradation. In efforts to determine mill power, attempts have been made to utilize torque concepts. The formulas derived consider the grinding mass as a rigid body and utilize factors that are based on empirical data so that the movement of the charge within the mill is compensated for. These formulas are of principal interest to the mill designer since he is charged with the responsibility of analyzing all of the variables and from them predicting a mill size and a motor size which are compatible both with each other and with the grinding job for which they were intended. The mill operator, on the other hand, has an entirely different problem. The mill dimensions are already established and so is the driving motor. The operator's main concern is to obtain maximum performance from the mill he already has. For him, the many variables which perplex the mill designer are fixed values. Mill diameter, length and speed are set and, to a large extent, so are the conditions inside the mill from which the torque formula advocates derive their empirical data. It is conceivable that if the major mill dimensions which affect power demand are held constant, and if the variables influencing empirical factors are held fairly constant, as they are in an operating mill, then the only major variable remaining which affects power is the level of the charge itself. THE Blackwell Zinc Co., Inc., a subsidiary of the American Metal Co., Ltd., operates a horizontal retort zinc smelter at Blackwell, Okla. The plant has 14 furnace blocks of 800 retorts each, fired with natural gas on a 48 hr cycle. Over 13,000 tons of zinc-bearing material, chiefly sulphide flotation concentrates, are treated monthly to produce slab zinc and high lead-cadmium fume. In 1942 a program of rebuilding and modernizing the smelter was started. By 1947 furnace smelting capacity had been increased to a point where roasting and sintering facilities were inadequate, and it was necessary to purchase oxidized materials to supplement sinter production. The seven 210 ft Ropp roasters and three 42 in. x 44 ft Dwight-Lloyd machines then in use had been in service at least 20 years and were in need of major rebuilding. Thus it was entirely practical to consider all new equipment and a change of method rather than rebuilding and repairing obsolete units. A study of the problem indicated that roasting as such could be eliminated and roasting and sintering accomplished in one step by a modification of the Robson process,' which had been used since the early 1930's by the National Smelting Co., Ltd., at their plants at Avonmouth, England, and Swansea Vale, South Wales. Francis P. Sinn, General Manager, Zinc Smelting Operations, The American Metal Co., Ltd., who was familiar with the practice in England, suggested the use of one large machine for the entire operation from concentrate to sinter. One step sintering appeared to best meet Blackwell's plant requirements and indicated substantial savings in labor, gas, coal, and repair costs. Choice of Machine Size The sinter machine size was set at 12x168 ft for a rated capacity of 540 tons per day. This tonnage, produced on a five day week, would meet the seven day requirements of the 14 furnace blocks. The one large machine was quoted at a lower cost than two or more 6 ft wide machines of similar total capacity. Further, the larger machine could be housed in a smaller structure and only one set of equipment for charge preparation and delivery and for disposal of sinter cake was needed. One machine on a five day week made possible a concentration of the skilled operating personnel and required less men than a plant including two or more machines and related equipment circuits. Fewer units of equipment meant less maintenance, and the two down days weekly allowed ample time to repair and, if necessary, to make up lost production. Experience had indicated better sintering quality and rates with larger masses of material, not only on wider machines, but also in deeper beds. The ratio of windbox perimeter to area for the 12x168 ft machine is 0.179, compared to 0.353 for a 6x102 ft machine and 0.617 for a 42 in. x 44 ft machine. This meant less air leakage with resulting fan power savings and less spoilage of charge along the pallet sides. Performance Initial operation of the new sinter plant was made in November 1951 and regular production attained late in December. The average product sinter output during 1952 and the first half of 1953 has been 18.2 tons per hr. The average for one month has been as high as 22.4 tons per hr. Considerable experimenting with varied operating conditions accounts in part for the below capacity — 24 tons per hr — average output, and work to further improve production rate continues. A typical sinter analyses is 66.0 pct Zn, 0.3 pct Pb, 0.1 pct Cd, 0.3 pct S, 8.0 pct Fe, 2.0 pct SiO,, 0.8 pct CaO, and 0.2 pct MgO. Use of this material has made possible increases in furnace burden and improved furnace operation over the former practice using sinter made from Ropp roasted concentrates. Better lead and cadmium elimination in sintering has permitted the furnace production of slab zinc lower in lead and cadmium. Anticipated economies of operation have largely been gained. The sinter plant is operated by seven men per 8 hr shift — one head operator, three equipment operators and three sweepers — plus one oiler on day shift only. While it has been necessary at times to operate seven days a week to produce the required sinter tonnage, the five day work week usually has been adequate. Consumption of natural gas for sinter bed ignition is 200,000 to 300,000 cu ft per day. Green Ore Sintering Practice The 30 to 31 pct sulphur content of the —200 mesh zinc concentrates is the fuel used to sinter the charge, no coal addition being required. In the feed to the machine, sufficient concentrates are added to crushed return sinter fines containing 0.3 to 0.5 pct sulphur to produce a charge averaging 5.0 to 6.5 pct sulphur. Since the return sinter used in Blackwell's practice is varied from — 1/2 to — 1/8 in., the actual sintering mixture of fine sinter and concentrates is somewhat higher in sulphur. The coarser sinter particles are too large to resinter and merely aid porosity in the sinter bed. The ratio of concentrates to return sinter in the charge ranges from about 1:4 to 1:5.5. Variations are based on the appearance of pried up bed sections, bed exit gas temperature trends, windbox suctions, and return sinter size. Sufficient sulphur must be used to obtain fritting of the charge into a soft sinter cake and to aid in the elimination of lead and cadmium. Excessive feed sulphur will result in partial slagging of the cake impairing porosity and prolonging sintering time.

Solution Mining or In Situ Mining has received increasing attention in the past few years because the method offers many attractive possibilities in improving the environmental impact of mining as well as making feasible the extraction of deeper, low value mineral reserves. This paper will present a brief discussion of the state-of- the-art in total solution, slurry removal and leach mining. As a specific example of utilizing the method, the uranium deposits of South Texas are a type of deposit which have been considered as being amenable to in situ leach mining. The parameters required to ascertain the amenability of such a deposit for in situ leaching will be presented. The hydrological factors which influence the production of the soluble uranium solutions and their displacement will be discussed. Mathematical models for various well configurations have been made and graphic representation will be presented to illustrate various production methods and the resultant hydrological consequences.

THE Larap iron deposits, 125 miles east of Manila, are the biggest high-grade iron deposits in the Philippines, and have in seven years produced nearly 4 million tons of 6o per cent ore. Magnetic surveying followed by churn and diamond drilling cheaply developed a score of million tons. The ore zone is a wedge of metamorphic rocks in fresh, Miocene sediments overlain by agglomerates, which seem to have filled a river valley eroded in the sediments. A mild overthrust of the competent agglomerates crumbled the shale in front. Solutions gradually turned it into more competent hornfels and deposited pyrite, then magnetite and pyrite in the pores. As the temperature rose large bodies of magnetite with some pyrite were deposited by replacement and in open cavities in tensional areas of overthrust shears. At still higher temperature magnetite and calcium-magnesium silicates formed other bodies in similar cavities, and finally the thrust zone was invaded by syenite porphyry, causing high-temperature alteration products. Possibly, as temperature abated, more high-grade ore was deposited. The complicated faulting indicates dynamic, chronological and spatial changes of mineralization rather than zoning in a static system. Noncommercial copper, molybdenum and some gold accompanied the iron mineralization. In the thirties the Philippines gained a justified reputation as a country of considerable mineral wealth. Traces of Chinese workings show that these earliest travelers and traders had in a small way exploited the latent gold resources in the Islands. The Spaniards continued this for centuries, but did not succeed in establishing any steady mining industry. Modern technology was required to get it started. The rapid development in the last decade before the war got its impetus from several financial factors, the return to sugar growers of previously collected taxes, the influx of Spanish capital during the civil war in [ ] Spain, the influx of Chinese capital when the Japanese started their "China incident," and others. Directly or indirectly much of this capital reached the mining industry; in particular, gold mining. Out of the turmoil of an exceptional mining boom emerged a sufficient number of good and well managed gold properties to send the production to a level above that of any single state in the United States at the time. [In an increasing degree in recent years, especially since the war, men in many parts of the world are turning their attention to the problems of the future, attempting to appraise the basis and extent of man's progress and interpret the problem that he faces in the near future. The war made clear to ma persons the degree to which modern industry depends upon t continuous flow of enormous quantities of raw materials, a especially of the minerals. In many circles throughout t world, the question of adequate supplies of the mine especially the fuels and metals, for near as well as more remo needs is receiving serious consideration. As a result, persons representing the state as well as industry are looking to geologists and engineers for all the data that throw light on the distribution, extent and availability of the minerals that must serve coming generations.] Obviously, in a brief research I have been able to consider only a few sources of the metals in Europe, perhaps fifty out of a total of many hundreds. In order that the conclusions may have value, however, I have chosen districts which have been important sources during some epoch of the last three hundred years or more.

IN the course of the development of the phase equilibrium diagram for the system Zr-Cr,' the structure of an as-cast allov having the composition ZrCr2 was analyzed and established to be isomorphous with MgZn2 (C14, hexagonal lattice, 12 atoms per unit cell). In a recent paper on the same system, Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' report for the ZrCr2 phase an isomorphy with MgCu2 (C15, cubic lattice, 24 atoms per unit cell). It appeared that this conflict might be resolved by assuming a high and low temperature modification for ZrCr2. That this was the case with the phase TiCr2 has recently been demonstrated by Levinger." Specimens of ZrCr2 annealed at 1200°, 1100°, 994", 900°, 834", 800°, and 700°C, respectively, and subsequently quenched were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It was successfully demonstrated that a transition from the MgZn, structure at lower temperatures to the MgCu, structure did occur at some temperature between 900" and 994°C. Table I lists the observed structures at the various annealing temperatures. In Table II, a summary of line spacings and intensities is given for each of the allotropic modifications. The first six lines of the MgCu2 structures have been located in the table to illustrate the close similarity between the patterns. Lattice parameters of the two modifications were calculated by a least squares solution of equations for interplanar spacings for a series of high angle lines. The results are as follows: MgZn2 type - c = 8.262 kX, A = 5.079 kX. MgCu2 type — a = 7.195 kX. It is interesting to note that TiCr2 behaves in reverse fashion yn that the MgCu, structure is the low temperature modification and the MgZn2 structure is the high temperature modification. For many years the Metals Research Laboratory of Carnegie Institute of Technology has been concerned with the statistical nature of the engineering properties of steel from an experimental viewpoint, particularly those properties representing ductility.' In the past three years new work has been directed toward evaluating the statistical nature of the endurance properties. It has been shown that both the fracture curve and the endurance limit in fatigue are markedly statistical in nature. The S-N curve (and the endurance limit) of ferrous materials is often determined with specimens which number as few as ten. The common procedure is to test the first specimen at a stress well above the expected endurance hmit. Each succeeding specimen is then tested at a progressively lower stress, until, after five or six tests, a specimen runs ten million or so cycles without failing. Two or three more specimens are then used to find the highest stress at which failure will not occur; the limiting stress determined in this way is called the endurance limit. It has now been found, however, that the variability in the fracture curve and in the endurance limit in heat-treated alloy forging steels is so great that S-N curves must be drawn on the basis of distribution curves which can be appraised only by statistical methods. Two methods have been adopted in this study: (1) straightforward statistical studies of cycles to fracture of a number of specimens at each of a series of stress levels, and (2) a new abbreviated statistical method, known as "staircase testing."2 The latter corisists in testing a series of specimens, one by one, with the test stress for any given specimen automatically

There has been developed at Latouche a rather unusual system of mining which, for want of a better name, has been called the "Latouche system of mining." It is a modified form of shrinkage stoping applicable to orebodies of large or fairly large size where the ground is such that timbering would not be required in stoping. Mention has been made of this method of mining by Birchll who gave no details as it had been in use only a short time and the final outcome undetermined. The system, however, has proved to be entirely successful and it is thought that a paper covering it might be of general interest. Before proceeding with a detailed description of the Latouche system a brief description of the property and the various mining methods previously used will be given. Location The Beatson mine of the Kennecott Copper Corpn. is situated on the west coast of Latouche Island, in Prince William Sound, Southwestern Alaska, 45 miles east of Seward, the coast terminus of the U. S. Government Railroad. It is a regular port of call for ships on the Southwestern Alaska run. The island is about 12 miles long and 3 miles wide. A ridge of mountains runs the entire length with a maximum elevation of 2500 feet. Climate Latouche has to contend with possibly the greatest amount of precipitation on the North American continent. The annual average precipitation for the past 4 years has been 188 in., with 248 in. for the year 1926. A rainfall of 4 in. per day is not uncommon. In the winter the thermometer rarely falls below +20° F. and the snowfall is usually heavy during the months of March and April.

Seven weeks of 1971 were devoted to a nationwide coal walkout resulting in lost production of some 70 million tons and leaving 1971 coal production at about 550 million tons. Compounding the problem, consumption of coal in 1971 by electric utilities rose by about 5% to 336 million tons. In the mean- time, numerous contracts were awarded for coal R&D including $24.8 million given by the Office of Coal Research to Bituminous Coal Research for the construction of a coal-to-gas pilot plant using the BIGAS process. Exports declined mainly due to Japan's decrease in steel production and to that country's increase in coal imports from Canada and Australia. The advances in equipment design and mining procedures made 1971 a noteworthy year. Introduction of the variable pitch I dipper, the trend toward wheeled vehicles, the greater use of scrapers in reclamation and battery-operated vehicles and oscil-mining, and the increased activity in the areas of ventilation and dust control were given widespread approval. There were also strides made in computerization, longwall mining, roof bolting, rock dusting, mine haulage and methane detection.

THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. Circulating Load In this particular paper it seems advisable to deal with the classification phases of the work that to a major extent govern the success of any closed-circuit grinding unit. To extend our knowledge of the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals, the response of the following minerals to ethyl xanthate as collector was studied by captive bubble and cylinder flotation tests: antimonite (Sb2S3), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), covellite (CuS), rnarcasite (FeS2), orpiment (As&.), pyrrhotite (FeS) and tetrahedrite (4CU2S, Sb2S3). Lollingite (FeAs2) was also exarnined to determine if its behavior could be correlated with that of pyrite or rnarcasite (FeS2. Experimental Method Mineral for Flolation and Contact Tests Mineral was prepared in the manner a1ready described1 and its behavior both freshly ground and "oxidized" was studied. Tests in which the mineral was allowed to oxidize for various periods showed that a uniform response to xanthate was reached in two days or less. Oxidation Products The soluble oxidation products from most of the above minerals were measured and their effect on the flotation of the mineral studied. The mineral samples were wet ground to minus-52 mesh and deslimed, and 20 g of this material placed in 200 ml of distilled water of a measured pH value, and CO2-free air bubbled through each suspension at a constant rate (about I bubble/sec) for 5 days. It has been shown1 that the size of the mineral is unimportant in the rate of formation , oxidation products and that probably the supply of oxygen to the mineral is the rate-determining step. At the end of 5 days the pH value of the 'supernatant liquid was measured again, the mineral filtered off and the soluble products determined. Methods for estimation of sulphur acids, ferrous and ferric iron and copper have already been described.l No satisfactory method was found for antimony. Arsenic was estimated as the arsenate.2 Flotation of "Unoxidized" Minerals with Ethyl Xanthate as Collector Fig I to 3, 4. 6, show the effect of alkali and cyanide as depressants for the minerals with 25 mg potassium ethyl xanthate per liter as collector at 35°C. Wark and Cox8 have shown that with ethyl xanthate as collector, galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite show a greater tolerance to cyanide and hydroxyl ions at room temperature than at 35°C Covellite (Fig I), marcasite (Fig 2) and pyrrhotite (Fig 3) behave similarly.
