The term "mechanical mining" carries an ambiguity which justifies a preliminary word of explanation. . All mining activity conducted in this day is more or less mechanical; that is to say, power expressed in the form of electricity, steam or compressed air is used in some portion of practically every mining activity of consequence. "Mechanical loading" is more nearly correct than "mechanical mining" in reference to present practice. The first substantial effort made in the direction of mechanical mining, subsequent to the application of steam for hoisting and underground pumping purposes, was that of substituting for hand labor undercutting and shearing by power-driven machines. The undercutting of coal by hand represented at one time the most arduous task confronting the miner. Occupying a kneeling position in the thicker beds, or lying on his side in the thinner coal, the task was tedious and exhausting. The first attempt to substitute crude air-driven, and later electrically driven, "punchers," as the percussion type of machine was called, met with much the same opposition on the part of the workers as was expressed by workers in the other industries when any innovation, whether labor-saving or otherwise, was introduced. We should not be too critical of this attitude of mind shown by the mine workers. The peculiarly isolated character of the work carried on in semidarkness by a class of men who to a large extent lived and held themselves aloof from the other branches of society led long ago to the development of a craft consciousness which they have found difficult to surrender. It was not until 1891 that a definite record of the results obtained by the use of undercutting machines of all types was made available, the quantity undercut in that year totaling 6,211,732 tons of bituminous coal from all American mines. The volume of bituminous coal undercut by machines in 1928 totaled 369,687,007 tons, or 73.8 per cent. of the nation's production. In the light of this experience, we can properly feel that the work of introducing the coal-loading machine as a substitute for hand shoveling is making substantial progress.

THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first' began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use .of mineral substances to their benefit, but how- ever that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans mitted through instruction in the family. At first such activities must have been merely a .minor part of the making of a-living, but in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

(written discussion*) .-I have never seen in print anything that even remotely has approached this article in clearness and important conclusions in conjunction with work done on the sink-and-float test. I have had many hundreds of these tests made and on different specific gravity solutions and the resultant product analyzed, but I have never grasped nor been able to show what this article sets forth. This article brings out one factor very clearly to my mind; what is to take the place of the solutions of different specific gravities used to obtain the laboratory results, when it comes to washing on a large scale, since water has one constant weight only? The answer is, sizing of coal. And as we know the importance of size versus specific gravity of the material to be washed, perhaps defined (practical) lines can ultimately be gotten up so that the sizing, if any, may be determined at the same time as the laboratory work on the coal is being done. (written discussion?).-The authors' deductions are well founded and although they disclaim any wide experience in commercial coal washing, practically all of the data presented are applicable to coals of all parts of this country. The paper clearly sets forth the great necessity of careful preliminary investiga-tion of each contemplated washery undertaking and contains the follow-ing very true statements. "It is not safe to assume that any coal which can he successfully washed on coarse coal jigs can be cleaned more com-pletely by washing at a finer size on tables," and "The effect of finer crushing upon the completeness with which impurities may be separated from coal depends upon two opposing tendencies. First, that the more finely a raw coal is crushed, the more completely will the particles of impurities be detached from the particles of clean coal. Second, the finer a coal is crushed the more difficult it becomes to separate the pieces of clean refuse from the pieces of clean coal."

EVERY engineer and user of wire rope is desirous of information that will enable him to determine whether the performance of any particular piece of rope is satisfactory, and what conditions can be changed so as to increase the life of a rope. In most cases, it is far from easy to analyze the conditions of service and tell which is the greatest factor in determining the life of wire rope. If we start on a layout for an entirely new rope system, the task of making conditions satisfactory is simplified so far as the engineering details are concerned; but if the plant requiring wire rope is in operation, any change is likely to involve the expenditure of consider-, able money to replace and change over machinery that must be kept in constant operation, because a large monetary loss will result from a shutdown for even a few days. Often wire rope is kept operating under bad conditions, as the user thinks that it is cheaper and quicker to replace the rope than to make alterations in the hoisting machinery. A typical case is a metal mine operating in what is now almost the center of a large mining city, where it owns a few acres of mineral rights. It was expected that the shaft would go to a depth of 1000 ft. (305 m.), so a moderate sized rope, about 1 ¼ in. (31.7 mm.), was used on a 6-ft. drum with a 7-ft. head-frame sheave and rather short lead from drum to head sheave. This mine has gone deeper each year until, it is now 2500 ft. deep and the rope speed has been increased from 1500 ft. per min. to over 3000 ft. The original rope just filled the drum in one layer, now it overwinds three layers. The original ropes were probably 6 X 19 crucible steel and lasted from 12 to 18 mo.; now, the highest grade plow steel is used, yet the average service is only about 6 mo. The cause is not hard to find. If the engineers had known at the outset what would be done with this hoist, the design would have been very different. Conditions at this mine, from a wire rope standpoint, have gradually become worse and it is difficult to see how rope service on this hoist can be com-pared with the service of previous years with any fairness to the wire-

NATURAL abrasives of some type are found in all countries of the world. In order of their hardness the principal natural abrasives are diamond, corundum, emery, and garnet, which are termed high grade, and the various forms of silica, including pumice, pumicite, ground feldspar, china clay and, most important, sandstone. The properties qualifying materials for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness, grain shape and size, character of fracture, and purity or uniformity. For manufacture of bonded grain abrasives such as grinding wheels, the stability of the abrasive and its bonding characteristics are also important. No single property is paramount for all uses. Extreme hardness and toughness are needed for some applications, as in diamonds for drill bits, while for other purposes the capacity of the abrasive to break down slowly under use and to develop fresh cutting edges is of greatest importance, as with garnet for sandpaper. In dentifrices, soaps, and metal polishes, of course, hardness and toughness are objectionable. First among the natural abrasives, industrial diamonds are essentially of three types: l—bort, which includes off-color, flawed, or broken fragments unsuitable for gems; 2—carbonado, or black diamond, a very hard and extremely tough aggregate of very small diamond crystals; and 3—ballas, a very hard, tough globular mass of diamond crystals radiating from a common center. Bort comes from all diamond-producing centers, carbonados only from Brazil, and ballas chiefly from Brazil, although a few of this last group come from South Africa. By far the largest producer of industrial diamonds is the Belgian Congo; the Gold Coast, Angola, the Union of South Africa, and Sierra Leone supply most of the remainder. There is no production in Canada, which imports $6 to $9 million worth of industrial diamonds annually. Industrial diamonds find innumerable uses in modern industry. They are used for diamond drill bits for the mining industry; in diamond dies for wire drawing; in diamond-tipped tools for truing abrasive wheels and for turning and boring hard rubber, fibers, and plastics; and in diamond-toothed saws for sawing stone, glass, and metals. High-speed tool steels, cemented carbides, and other hard, dense alloys can be cut, sharpened, or shaped efficiently only with diamond-tipped tools and diamond grinding wheels. .. Second only to the diamond in hardness is corundum, an impure form of the ruby and sapphire gems consisting of alumina and oxygen (Al²O³) with impurities such as silica and ferric oxide. Corundum generally crystallizes from magmas rich in alumina and deficient in silica, as in the nepheline syenites of eastern Ontario. Grain corundum is used in the manufacture of grinding wheels; very coarse grain is used in snagging wheels. Both types of wheels are employed in the metal trades, where the hardness of corundum, coupled with its characteristic fracturing into sharp cutting edges, makes it an ideal cutting tool. The finest corundum (flour grades) is used for fine grinding of glass and high-precision lenses. From 1900 to 1921 Canada was the world's leading producer of corundum. Following this period the deposits located in northern Transvaal of the Union of South Africa supplied more and more of the world's requirements, and since 1940 South Africa has provided almost the entire output, which has ranged between 2500 to 7000 tons a year during the last decade. Minor amounts have also been produced in Mozambique, India, and Nyassaland. Opportunities for Mining Corundum Corundum deposits in southeastern Ontario are of three types, which may be described as follows: 1—Scattered, irregularly-shaped deposits of coarse-grained corundum which could be mined by means of small pits. About 10 groups of such deposits are known. Although the tonnage of individual deposits of this type is not great, it has been estimated that several years' ore supply is available for a small tonnage operation. Deposits average about 9 pct corundum. 2—Large irregular deposits of coarse-grained corundum which would require mining by adit with possibly a scavenger operation on the remains of former surface deposits. The Craigmont deposit of this type produced about 20,000 tons of corundum concentrate during operations between 1900 and 1913. Most of the readily available surface ore was removed by operators during that time. Reserves of ore above road level have been estimated to average 7 pct corundum, but none of the so-called reserves have been blocked out, or even indicated, by diamond drilling. The recrystallization reaction in OFHC and spectroscopically pure copper has been followed by X ray diffraction determinations of the amount of material with the cold-worked and recrystallized textures in specimens which had been given various heat treatments. The heats of activation for recrystallization are found to be: 29.9 kcal per rnol for OFHC copper and 22.4 kcal per rnol for spectroscopic copper. A reliable and speedy method for measuring the amount of recrystallized material in a piece of rolled metal, together with a new scheme for low temperature heat treatment, have made possible a determination of the activation energy for recrystallization in rolled copper. This method for studying recrystallization rates is different from others reported in the literature.' Oxygen free, high conductivity copper—OFHC copper—of purity 99.98 pct gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 29.9 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 208-245°C. Copper of purity 99.999 pct from the American Smelting & Refining Co. gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 22.4 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 43-135°C. The great change in activation energy for recrystallization as the small amount of impurity in the metal is decreased suggests that the motion of grain boundaries is conditioned by the impurities which must be concentrated in them. Thus the OFHC copper recrystallizes with an activation energy of the order of magnitude to be expected for the diffusion of the kind of impurities likely to be present. The high purity copper, on the other hand, recrystallizes with a much lower activation energy, in accord with the notion that the grain boundaries need not wait for the impurities to diffuse with them. Copper when strongly cold-rolled has a well-defined crystallite texture which can be described by saying that the [111] direction of the face- centered cubic crystals is aligned approximately in the cross-rolling direction and that faces of the form {110} lie approximately in the rolling plane. When such rolled copper is completely annealed the crystallite texture is quite different: the [loo] direction is in the cross-rolling direction and faces of the form (100) are in the rolling plane. At intermediate stages of annealing, the copper contains both textures. If a Geiger counter X ray diffraction spectrometer is set up so as to measure the intensity of the (200) Bragg reflection from the rolled surface of a piece of copper strip, this intensity increases from a very small value in the cold-worked state to a maximum as the specimen is annealed. The same would be true for (200) reflections from planes normal to the rolling or cross-rolling directions. In view of this fact, the amount of material in the copper which has recrystallized can be measured by comparing the intensities of one of these reflections just mentioned with the intensity from a similar specimen after complete annealing. In much the same way the intensity of (111) reflections from planes normal to the cross-rolling direction could be used to measure the amount of unrecrystallized material in the specimen. In the work to be described here the amounts of recrystallized and unrecrystallized material in partly annealed rolled copper specimens were determined in this way. Experimental Procedure Samples of oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper, cold-rolled 99.7 pct to 0.002 in. thickness, were subjected to heat treatments for various chosen times at four different temperatures, and high purity copper samples, cold-rolled 98.0 pct to 0.0015 in. thickness, at six different temperatures. The gas-lift method of flowing oil from wells is the outstanding feature of petroleum technology today. Its forerunner, the air-lift, was used successfully first, in the Baku fields of Russia, in 1899, and later in the Gulf Coast fields of Texas and Louisiana and the Kern River field of California. It is still used to a limited extent in certain oil fields. The use of compressed natural gas for lifting oil from wells has supplanted the air-lift method in a measure in those fields where a sufficient quantity of gas accompanies the oil to make the gas-lift possible, or where natural gas is plentiful and inexpensive. We find, therefore, in California, that natural gas is used at practically every well where a gaseous medium is employed to flow the oil. The use of natural gas has many advantages over that of air. It is possible to recover and save the gasoline from the gas that accompanies the oil to the surface. This gasoline would be wasted if air were used as the lifting medium. Also, certain proportions of air and gas form an explosive mixture that cannot be handled safely by compressors. Another advantage that gas has over air is that gas under pressure is more soluble in oil. Gas in solution in oil reduces the viscosity of the oil that is being produced and causes it to flow more readily through the tubing and flow lines. The gas-lift has made it possible to recover many thousands of barrels of oil from deep wells in California that could not have been produced otherwise. It would not have been economical, had it been mechanically possible, to produce such wells as the world's deepest producing oil well (Miley Athen's No. 6, Rosecrans field, California) by any other method of pumping known today. At this well, production is obtained from between 7305 and 7591 ft. and 11 months after completion of the well, production was being maintained on the gas-lift at approximately 2000 bbl. a month. The crookedness of the hole, or its diameter and depth will not prevent the successful application of gas-lift pumping when other conditions are favorable.

Considerable work has been done in developing a pyrometer to measure the temperature of molten brasses, bronzes, and aluminum in the crucible. On account of the high melting points and the amount of zinc and sulfurous fumes given off from molten brasses, the conditions are somewhat severe for a thermocouple of standard design; but satisfactory results are obtained with a portable pyrometer, 3 ft. (0.9 m.) of connecting lead wire, and a special 5-ft. nickel-nickel chromium thermocouple, composed of rods 1/4in. (6.35 mm.) in diameter. The lower 12 or 24 in., as desired, may be made detachable so that new tips may be connected at little trouble or expense. The portable instrument need not be of the extreme high-resistance type, as the movable parts of the galvanometer of a lower resistance instrument may be better constxucted to withstand the continuous handling such an instrument receives. Platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouples, protected with porcelain and graphite tubes, have been used, but the lag in registering the temperature is too great. It has been found that the range of temperature for various brasses is as follows: Red brasses...............2200-2250" F. (1205-1234" C.) Yellow brasses............2250-2400" F. (1234-1318' C.) Bronzes..................2300-2550" F. (1260-1400" C.) A recent test with a portable pyrometer having a range of 2600" F. with a bare 1/4 in. heavy exposed couple 5 it. long and a handle attached at the upper end showed that the temperatures of molten aluminum under varying conditions in an oil-fired crucible furnace and one of the Simplex type were as follows: CRUCIBLE, OIL-FIRED FURNACE SIMPLEX FURNACE Temperature of metal in furnace....... 1540" F. DURING an investigation into the effect of heat-treatment on the creep properties of the magnesium alloy ZW1, (1 pct Zn, 0.6 pct Zr), the previously published methods of final polishing were found to be unsatisfactory. A new diamond-polishing technique has been developed to facilitate the study of fine precipitates in this and other magnesium alloys, and is described in this note. The sectioning and coarse grinding techniques are those of Fox and Hall,' and Hess and Cieorge.' Pre- liminary mechanical polishing is done with 6-µ, and 1-µ( grades of diamond compound on 'Microcloth' using a lubricant of 'Hyprez' oil. When the conventional technique is used with a 1/4- µ diamond wheel for the final polishing of magnesium alloys, scratching is likely to result from the abrasive action of the 'Microcloth' nap on the soft metal surface. This problem has been overcome by the use of a cream on the wheel in order to separate the specimen surface from the polishing cloth. To prepare this cream, a solution of 6-ml tri-ethanolamine in 75-ml water is stirred into 12.5 g stearic acid at a constant temperature of 80o to 90°C. The cream is allowed to cool, and is then 'whipped' to a smooth consistency with 100-ml 'Hyprez' oil. Before polishing, the diamond loaded 'Microcloth' is moistened with a few drops of 'Hyprez' oil, then a small amount of cream is worked into the nap. For the best results a wheel speed of 500 rpm should be used for polishing, and the specimen should be held by hand with a light pressure while being rotated in the opposite direction to the wheel. After polishing it is necessary to swab the specimen thoroughly in methylated spirits to remove residual cream and oil from the surface in order to avoid uneven etching and drying stains. Fig. 1 shows the surface finish obtained on a specimen by polishing on a 1/4- µ diamond wheel using the cream, and Figs. 2 and 3 the precipitate observed in ZW1 after polishing, and etching for two seconds in nitric acid 15 pct in ethylene glycol. This new diamond-polishing technique has made a valuable contribution to the programme of metal-lographic research on ZW1 and has become a routine laboratory practice for other low alloy content magnesium alloys.

9.4-1. Basic principles. DESCRIPTION AND BASIC FUNCTIONS. The concept of inclined skip haulage is not new. The basic idea has been in use at least 400 years. The system is essentially a steeply inclined railway utilizing a hoist to pull the skips to the top or intermediate positions. Inclined skip haulage is often justified where high lifts would require long hauls for other haulage systems. The basic system types are as follows: 1. Single skip, single drum. This system is a single car pulled by a simple hoist system. 2. Balanced skip, single drum. A system utilizing two cars (skips on cables)--one overwound, one underwound-on a single drum. The dead weight of one skip and cable balances the dead weight of the other. As one skip ascends the other descends between two fixed points. 3. Balanced skip, double drum. This system is an elaboration of system No. 2, except the drums may be disengaged from one another to permit the skips to service various loading and dumping points. The preceding are major classifications subject to numerous variations. These variations may be in the skipway, skip design, loading methods, or unloading methods. A few examples follow: 1. The skipway may be standard or special railroad, an overhead monorail or cable, or a ramp for rubber tired vehicles. 2. The skip, per se, may be of varying dumping arrangements (side, bottom, etc.) or could be the box of the vehicle hauling to the skip. 3. Loading may be accomplished directly from the service unit to skip, through an intermediate loading device (e.g., a pocket), or into bins which feed the skip. Loading may be at more than one point. 4. Unloading of the skip can be simple or complex as required. Dumping may be to the haulage unit, to bins and feeders, or to a crusher and conveyor system. Dumping may take place at more than one point.

The object of crushing and grinding for leaching is obviously to permit contact of the solvent and mineral and subsequent removal of pregnant solution in a reasonable time. Heap leaching is the leaching of ores that have been mined and transported to prepared, relatively impervious pads for leaching by sprinkling or ponding, and percolation of the lixiviate through the ore. Dump leaching is the leaching of dumps or low-grade ore or overburden without the use of prepared pads under them. Run-of-mine material, e. g., low -grade ore from open pit stripping operations, may be leached without crushing, and a fairly high recovery made by heap leaching. An alternate method for better grade gold/silver ores is to crush to 9 to 13 mm (318 to112 in. ) size for pad heap leaching, as used by Smoky Valley Mining Company at Round Mountain, Nevada, on gold ore, and to 38 rnrn (1 -1 12 in.), which will be done by Candelaria Partners, at Candelaria, Nevada, on silver ore. Heap leaching of copper probably began at Rio Tinto, Spain, about the year 1752. This was done by the leaching of weathering piles of ore in the open air followed by iron cementation of the liquor that drained off the heaps. Its application to the low -grade southwestern United States copper ores was overlooked for many years, and low- grade ores from Sacramento Hill at Bisbee, Arizona, were the first to be heap leached in 1923. Site preparation used a half century ago is the same today. "The need for some form of waterproofing of the pad was evident. Before leaching ore was piled, the site was cleared of cactus and brush. After clearing a gentle sloping area, it was then covered with a blanket of rolled and tamped clay or slime tailing. When heaps are built, a layer of coarse fragments may be put down first to assist drainage. A second method of leaching without grinding, usually for higher grade ores, is by vat or tank leaching of material crushed to 9 to 13 mm (318 to 112 in.) size. Such a plant is considerably more expensive than a heap leaching installation but much less costly than grinding for agitation leaching, and a recovery higher than that obtained by heap leaching is to be expected. Vat leaching has been widely used by the copper industry on higher grade copper ores but has been used in only a few small operations on that size gold or silver ores. However, such a plant should be considered for a modest tonnage of a few million tons, 3 to 7 g per mt (0.10 to 0.20 oz per st), of Carlin-type leachable ores crushed to 9 mm (318 in.).

THE QUESTION of whether the production of oil should be limited to market demand has been constantly discussed during the last two years. Oil men, legislatures and courts have reached highly conflicting conclusions. Opponents of limitation to market demand assert that it is a scheme of the big purchasing companies to fix prices and to create a monopoly. Proponents, on the other hand, declare that such a limitation is necessary to prevent physical waste and that the effect on prices is merely incidental. A brief review of market demand legislation will disclose the confusion existing. The laws of Oklahoma,' prohibiting waste of oil and gas, specifically' authorize limitation to market demand as a method of preventink such waste. These laws and the proration orders based thereon have been upheld by the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, by several three-judge Federal District Courts, and by the Supreme Court of the United States.' Kansas has a similar law3 but no case has been found which discusses its validity. About a year ago the California Legislature passed a comprehensive conservation act, generally known as the Sharkey Bill giving authority to restrict production to an amount representing current requirements for use, taking into consideration oil and products in storage. This may be considered as equivalent to limitation to market demand. The Act was defeated upon referendum vote after a hard fought campaign in which it was charged that the Act would result in destruction of the independent operators.

Dense cylindrical specimens of artificial hematite were reduced in hydrogen over a range 0-f total pressures between 0.1 and 1.0 atm and temperatures between 650" and 950°C. Hydrogen reduction at a total pressure of 1.0 atm in the presence of a chemically inert diluent and reduction in hydrogen/water mixtures were also studied Znter.face movement during reduction was followed using metallographic techniques. Substantiu1 partial-pressure gradients are shown to exist in both the gas film and the reduced iron layer. The results are consistent with a mixed-control mechanism involving an interaction of gaseous-difusion effects with a first-order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wüstite interface. Over the hydrogen-pressure range of 0.1 to 1.0 atm, the rate is not directly proportional to the hydrogen pressure in the bulk gas stream. Nitrogen dilution of the reducing gas masks the true effect of hydrogen partial pressure by influencing the effective molecular dif-fusivity and gives an apparent first-order relationship. The transport of hydrogen and water vapor across the iron layer is consistent with molecular gaseous diffusion rather than a Knudsen diffusion mechanism. ALTHOUGH the literature on the reduction of iron oxides is very extensive, it is only comparatively recently that a definite quantitative model for the reduction of hematite has been proposed. This development has been largely due to the work of McKewan. An extensive literature review of previous work has recently been compiled by Themelis and Gauvin. Exclusive control by gaseous diffusion in the reduction of hematite has been recently advocated by Kawasaki and coworkers.' Although the results of the latter workers are of considerable practical significance, the extreme porosity (approximately 30 pct) of their specimens precludes their application to a kinetic evaluation of the reduction of dense polycrystalline hematite. The salient features of the kinetic model used by McKewan for the gaseous reduction of dense hematite at temperatures in excess of 560°C (when FeO is stable) are: 1) The reduction is a topochemical reaction taking place through 'the series FeO/FesO4/FeO/ Fe; 2) The gas-solid type of reaction takes place only at the FeO/Fe interface and the internal reduction: FeO proceeds by solid state diffusion; 3) The iron layer formed is quite porous and offers negligible impedance to gaseous diffusion; 4) The rate-controlling step in the reduction is a chemical process occurring at the Fe/FeO interface. In view of the relatively fast reaction rates involved when hematite is reduced in a stream of hydrogen, it seemed possible that the simplifying assumptions of negligible diffusional resistance in both the bulk gas phase and the reduced iron layer could introduce serious errors in the interpretation of experimental reduction data. The present work was initiated to elucidate the effect of gaseous diffusion on the reduction rate and to determine its possible influence in the formulation of the reaction mechanism at the metal/oxide interface. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure and Apparatus. Dense cylindrical compacts of artificial hematite were prepared by sintering pressed compacts of reagent-grade ferric oxide, containing 99.6 pct FezO, in air at 1200°C for 80 hr. The resulting compacts had a final porosity of less than 2 pct and a height and diameter of approximately 1 cm. Variations in sintering atmosphere from air to pure oxygen, in sintering time from 20 to 80 hr, and temperature from 1150" to 1250°C had no effect on the subsequent reduction behavior. IF the ball mill is considered only from an energy standpoint, it can be thought of as a converter of kinetic energy into heat energy and surface energy. The law of the conservation of energy must apply to the ball mill as it does to any machine or process in nature. The heat energy output of the ball mill is apparent to any casual observer of the operating mill since the outflow pulp will be appreciably warmer than the inflow water and rock. The rock in the ball mill is crushed by shearing of its ionic bonding caused by some impact-induced stresses beyond the elastic limit. As the bonds holding the mineral crystal lattices together are ruptured, new surface area is created on each unit of which a definite number of unsaturated bonds exist. Such unsaturated energy of bonding may be termed the "surface energy," and is a potential energy figure. This created energy was withdrawn from the ball mill system and represents an absorption, or disappearance of heat. To reduce the size of the rock, surface area must be created and with it the at- tendant characteristic surface energies of the minerals concerned. Thus the creation of surface energy, from an energy viewpoint, is the creation of useful work by the ball mill. Because of the controversial nature of the energy efficiency figures for modern operating ball mills, it seemed worthwhile to approximate the ordinary magnitude of such efficiencies from the above viewpoint. This was done by an energy balance of the three aforementioned forms of energy, kinetic, heat, and surface energy, for two 9Y2x10-ft grate-type ball mills grinding cement raw materials. Kinetic energy input to the balls was approximated as closely as possible while the heat energy output was measured by means of a thermometer and water and rock flow rates. The assumption was made

THE YEAR 1931 was for most American copper producers one of restricted output but extremely low production cost.. When compared with 1929, the marked reductions in costs achieved in 1931, operating at rates in many instances a third to a half of capacity, can only be regarded as remarkable. In fact, the recent shut-down of several large operations suggests the probability that 1931 costs represent a bare minimum for many properties. Before discussing the 1931 results a few remarks on cost data are appropriate. The type of cost tabulation here presented was first published in 1929, (A. B. Parsons. E. & M. I. June 8, 1929), and has appeared each, succeeding year following in general the calculation method and company set-up of the original article. (. G. W. Tower, E. & III. L, July 8. 1930; S. D. Strauss, E. & M. J.; July 27, 1931). As far as possible the leading American copper companies are included. In considering these cost tabulations it must be borne in mind that the information from which they have been prepared is entirely contained in the annual report of each company; and that a multiplicity of interests and a condensed income statement for some of the larger companies, such as Cerro de Pasco and Kennecott, make the cost figure an arbitrary one depending upon sundry metal credits, metal products, miscellaneous income, etc. For Granby, Howe Sound. Magma, and Noranda, sundry metal credits are important. Furthermore Andes, Chile and Greene Cananea give costs only against copper sold. Although the individual costs here figured are by no means absolute they are computed by the same method each year and offer a basis of annual comparison; and with attention to footnotes the premises on which the costs are based may be easily followed.

The equilibrium vapors established over Fe-Cr-Ni alloys containing up to 50 pct Cr at 1600°C were determined by collecting the effusate from thoria Knud-sen cells. From these data, the activities of iron and nickel in the ternary alloys have been calculated. In a separate set of measurements, a mass spectrometer was used to determine the activities of the three components in a series of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys. In binary Ni-Cr melts, the activity coefficient of chromium referred to pure solid chromium as standard state is less than one at low chromium contents but is greater than one for melts containing more than 30 at. pct Cr. For Ni-Cr melts containing less than 10 at. pct Cr, In ?Cr = 0.15-0.92 N2. Ternary activity diagrams for Fe-Cr-Ni alloys are presented. In iron-rich alloys, the interactions between the three components are negligible; however, in nickel-rich alloys, the three principal interactions have significant positive values. THE activities of components in binary Fe-Ni alloys have been measured both in the solid solution1-3 and liquid solution4-6 temperature ranges. The determination for Fe-Ni melts have been made by three different methods: transpiration,4 Knudsen-cell effusion with analysis of an accumulated condensate,' and Knudsen-cell effusion with direct measurements of relative component intensities by mass spectrometric methods.6 The results obtained by the three different methods in three different laboratories are in excellent agreement and considerable confidence is placed in the activity coefficients for Fe-Ni melts. At 1600°C, the activity coefficients in dilute solution are ?°Ni = 0.66 and ?oFe = 0.40 for the pure liquid components as standard states. Measurements made on solid solution Fe-Cr alloys7-10 indicate that the component activities are slightly greater than ideal. The measured activities in iron-rich Fe-Cr liquid alloy11-16 indicate almost ideal behavior for this system. The recommended activity coefficient of chromium in dilute solution in liquid iron at 1600o C, ?oCr, is 1.18 when referred to pure solid chromium as standard state and 1.04 when referred to pure undercooled liquid chromium as standard state." The conversion factor of 1.14 is based on a melting point of 1857°C and an enthalpy of melting of 4047 cal per g at. for chromium.21,37 The activity coefficient of iron in dilute solution in liquid chromium has not been measured. Activity measurements on solid Ni-Cr alloys have been made by several investigators.17-20 During the review of this manuscript, Fruehan12 published the results of a study on liquid Ni-Cr alloys at 1600°C. He used galvanic cells22 with ZrO2(CaO) as the electrolyte and Cr/Cr2O3 for the reference electrode. His results indicate that ?oCr in nickel at 1600°C is about 1.01 when referred to pure solid chromium and about 0.89 when referred to pure undercooled liquid chromium as standard state. The activity coefficient of nickel in liquid chromium is unknown. The compositions of vapors freely evaporating from some molten Fe-Cr-Ni alloys have been measured by Lyubimov, Granovskaya, and Berenstein.23 Their results, combined with known vapor pressures, indicate strong positive deviation for chromium in iron-rich alloys and strong negative deviation for chromium in nickel-rich alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES This research was undertaken to determine the activities of components in ternary Fe-Cr-Ni melts containing up to 50 at. pct Cr. At the initiation of the research, we decided to use a Knudsen-cell method wherein a portion of the effusing vapor is condensed on a cold plate.' The composition of the equilibrium vapor for each alloy composition is determined in this method by holding the system under constant conditions for a period of time sufficient to collect enough condensate on the cold plate for chemical analysis. The activities of components in ternary alloys can be calculated from such vapor composition determinations by Eq. [1].24

The Wind River Formation of Eocene age is the host rock for large high-grade uranium deposits in the Shirley Basin. The major deposits are in a northwest-trending belt of sandstones that were deposited in stream channels and that were lithologically favorable for uranium accumulation. Paleotopography influenced the character and position of the belt. The major deposits within the belt are at, or near, the margins of large tongues of altered sandstone formed in the most transmissive parts of thick sandstone beds. At least two tongues of altered sandstone are present in the belt, one of which is 5 miles long, 3 miles wide, and 70 feet thick; the other tongue is somewhat smaller. Ore bodies consist of a few hundred tons to several hundred thousand tons of material containing from 0.10 to about 2.00 per cent U3O8. The ore mineral is uraninite associated with pyrite, marcasite, hematite, and calcite. Deposition is believed to have taken place when neutral to slightly alkaline, oxidizing, uranium-bearing ground water, on entering the basin, encountered a reducing environment. The reductant may have been H2S of biogenic origin. Geology played an important role in discovery, exploration, and development of ore in the Shirley Basin.

ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has three major awards to make annually and one special prize for excellence in technical papers, as follows: The Robert W. Hunt Medal and- Prize, The J. E. Johnson, Jr., Award, the James Douglas Medal, and The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL AND PRIZE The partners of Robert. W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes; first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best on al paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist." This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee. J. E. JOHNSON, JR., AWARD This award is made from' the income of a. fund of $3000 donated by Mrs. Margaret Hilles Johnson in memory of her husband, J. E. THE St. Joseph Lead Co. became interested in the Tri-State district in 1921 through acquisition of prospecting and development rights on approximately 20,000 acres of land extending northeastward from the Picher mining field, mostly in Kansas. Prospecting with churn drills was begun the same year and the first commercial ore body was found on the Jarrett tract at the then northern limit of the main Picher field. Operations at this mine began in 1923. Kansas Explorations, Inc., was organized in 1923 by the St. Joseph Lead Co. as a wholly-owned subsidiary to carry on its operations in the Tri-State District from an office at Joplin, Mo. As prospecting of the original acreage proved largely negative, attention was subsequently turned to other sections of the district. Numerous additional leases were acquired and prospected. The Company was successful in developing into operating properties the Jarrett, Isherwood, Robinson, Sullivan and Lotson tracts and, in more recent years, the Ritz, Snapp, Buckingham, Gibson and Jasper mines.
