The effects of radon in drillholes on gamma-ray logs have been described by L. S. Hilpert and C. M. Bunker1 Since these effects may cause drastic error in the evaluation of uranium deposits, it is useful to know the conditions under which significant amounts of radon tend to accumulate in drill- holes. In the studies described here, atmospheric conditions were found to dominate in the control of the behavior of radon in drillholes in the vicinity of a uranium orebody. The site of the investigation was in McKinley County, New Mexico, about 12 miles north of Grants. Drillholes of 4 ¼ -in. diam, on 25-ft and 100- ft centers, penetrate ore in dry rock at a depth of about 100 ft. A geologic log of the drillhole of primary interest is shown in Fig. 1. Gamma-ray logs revealed three zones of ore-grade mineralization in the Todilto limestone. A 6-ft zone, the lowest of the three, assayed 0.20 pct U3O8 by chemical analysis. The limestone ores in this area contain disseminated uraninite and some yellow and orange secondary minerals.

IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually has been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,1 the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin" and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The increase of strength and hardness from the core to the skin is readily explained by the observation that, in addition to the stretching, the layers of a rod or wire are sheared more the closer they are to the surface.1,6-8 However, the presence of a soft surface layer can be attributed only to an annealing effect. THE dynamic behavior of a multiple fluid system is completely describable in terms of driving forces and resistances to flow. The latter are proportional to the vis-cosity of the fluid under consideration and inversely proportional to a property of the system termed the " effective permeability" to that fluid, a property therefore defined by this relation. Since three phases are usually present in oil reservoirs, it is essential to know the effective permeabilities to the several fluid phases, and the relationship between the composition of the fluid in the pore space and that of the flowing stream, in order to handle satisfactorily certain problems of oil production. In this regard, there are many unknown factors and parameters, and many that can be evaluated only indi-rectly. However, it is expected that work along lines similar to this present under-taking will help materially in solving these problems. Previous workers in this field have inves-tigated the two-phase systems, water-gas,1 water-oil2 in unconsolidated sands, and water-gas3 in consolidated sands. The ex-tension of the study of the flow of hetero-geneous fluid systems from two to three phases involved only slight changes in technique. The apparatus used in the present work, except for slight changes to be described, was that used by Leverett in his water-oil experiments.2 Correlation and interpretation of data were made by methods analogous to those used in two-phase work. The relative permeability to a phase-the effective permeability divided by the permeability of the system to a homogeneous fluid-was employed through-out in correlating the rate of flow of that phase with the composition of the pore space. Quantitative measurements of two inde-pendent physical properties of the system were required to determine the composition of the pore space. As in the two-phase work, the fraction of water was determined electrically. The gas fraction was deter-mined by measuring changes in volume accompanying measured pressure changes. Suitable account was taken of the solubility of the gas in the liquid phases, and of the vapor pressure of the water phase. Since this work was exploratory in nature, no attempt was made to obtain highly accu-rate numerical results. Reasonable precision and reproducibility were sought.

With each weight increase per lineal yard has come greater difficulty in making a product that would successfully withstand all tests that modern rails must meet. With these facts in mind, and with a sincere desire to produce a rail whose service in track would be satisfactory in all respects, the steelmaker was quick to realize that all of the factors entering into his process would have to be more closely controlled. Control of rail-steel slags was recognized as one of the most important of many interdepending factors. The object of slag control is to hold the slag compositions within a range that gives the best results with respect to economy of production, uniformity of analysis, and quality of the finished rails. The most important component of the slag from the standpoint of these production and quality factors is the ferrous oxide content. This component is a good indicator of the basicity and oxidizing power of the slag, and these largely govern the effect of the slag on the steel. Consequently, the

Wilkes-Barre Meeting, Julie, runs., THE ore-hearth was the earliest type of furnace used in smelting Mississippi Valley lead-ores, which are very pure, and low in silver-content. The first smelters made no attempts to recover lead from the smoke; and since about 15 per cent. of the lead -in the charge escaped in this manner, early practice with the hearth was decidedly wasteful. At most of the large smelting-plants blast-furnaces with auxiliary roasters were substituted for the hearths long ago. But, upon the introduction of the Lewis and Bartlett bag-process for collecting fume, the ore-hearth was used by companies engaged in the manufacture -of pigments, simply on account of the large percentage of fume made by it. In fact, the extraction of lead was kept down by the use of hot blast and other devices. During recent years, however, several smelting companies have realized that the preliminary roasting of galena for the blast-furnace is not economical, and have, therefore, replaced the roasting-furnace with a modification. of the old Scotch hearth, in which a large percentage of the lead in a charge is recovered directly as pig-lead, while the remainder passes partly into fume and partly into slag low enough in sulphur to be charged into the blast-furnace without further treatment. The results obtained have proved so satisfactory, both As to recovery and operating-expense, that one eminent metallurgist has predicted the universal use of the ore-hearth on non-argentiferous ores. The-ore-hearth, thus employed as an adjunct to a blast-furnace plant, is rather a desulphurizer than a smelting-furnace proper,-the chief object being to make a blue slag suitable for the cupola-furnace. AN improved method of measuring the surface area of a comminution product down to any desired particle size has been developed. The method is largely graphical, and requires relatively little calculation. It can be used with materials containing large amounts of clay, or excess fines of any kind. The surface area S is expressed in terms of square meters per100 c.c. of solids. This expression is based upon volume rather than weight, and is considered to be more suitable for crushing and grinding problems, where the machines ordinarily are operated under constant volume conditions. It has the advantage that surface areas of different materials can be compared directly, even though their specific gravities may be unknown. The "specific surface" of a material, or the number of square centimeters of surface area per gram, is equal to 100S divided by the specific gravity. Particle diameters are expressed in microns, K being the diameter of the largest particle present and L the grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding. The value of K does not always coincide exactly with the diameters of the largest particles retained on the coarsest testing sieve, since the largest particles formed in crushing and grinding are often slabby, or have other irregular shapes. L has been chosen as 0.700 microns, or number 27.5 in the size number series,1 for reasons to be explained later. S is the total surface area of all particles larger than L microns in diameter. When a homogeneous comminution product is separated into fractions whose diameters bear a constant geometrical relationship [p] to each other, and the log per cent weight retained upon each size and passing the next larger size is plotted against the log diameter, a straight line results, which is called the distribution line, and which has a slope in called the distribution modulus. The distribution line can be extended to any desired limiting size, and the total surface area of all particles larger than that size can be calculated. The equation of the distribution line is w = Cxm [I] where w is the per cent weight retained on each successive sieve; x is the particle diameter; and C is the per cent weight retained on an opening of unit diameter.2 Theoretically, the distribution line can be extended to include infinitely small particles. When it is so extended, and the assumption is made that no fine particles are present other than those accounted for by the equation; the log per cent cumulative weight passing any series of sizes, plotted against the log diameter passed, will result in a straight line lying parallel to and above the plotted distribution line.

This is a nontechnical paper on flotation, subdivided under three general headings: (I) Definition of flotation; (2) what flotation is now doing in Utah; and (3) what is the future of flotation? Definition T. A. Rickard defines flotation' as "the act or state of floating," from the French flottaison, water-line and flotter, to float. The dictionary defines flotation as "the science of floating bodies." The flotation process is a method of concentrating ores by frothing. Weinig and Palmer,2 define flotation as follows: What is the flotation process? Briefly, it consists in the agitation of finely divided ore in water containing bubbles of air or gas, a small amount of oil and, usually, other reagents, soluble and insoluble; under these conditions the small particles of native metals, sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, selenides and tellurides show a tendency to attach themselves to the films of the bubbles, and are thus carried to the surface of the water. The oxidized gangue minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, limestone, hematite, etc., show much less affinity for the bubbles, are easily wetted by the water, and either remain in suspension in the water, or sink to the bottom of the vessel. If the bubbles are sufficiently stable they can be removed, carrying their load of sulfide-mineral particles with them. Thus there can be effected a separation of the two classes of minerals from each other, assuming that the grinding has been sufficient to unlock all of the particles of different composition. The separation does not depend upon differences in specific gravity of the various minerals; in fact, the sulfides are usually heavier than the oxides, and some of the heaviest sulfide minerals are the easiest to float. A particle of mineral may be so large, however, that its weight will counteract its affinity for the film of the bubble. In most cases the ore must be fine enough to pass a screen having at least 48 meshes to the linear inch. Taggart3 defines flotation as follows: Flotation is a method of wet concentration of ores in which separation of mineral from gangue is effected by causing the mineral to float at or above the surface of a body of liquid pulp while the gangue becomes or remains submerged. FOR the purpose of this discussion, let us consider that the Rocky Mountain region covers the area in the seven Mountain States, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, and before we discuss the needs of these states, let us define Industrial Hygiene. Industrial Hygiene is that branch of preventive medicine concerned with the protection of health, improvement of efficiency, and prolongation of life of the industrial worker; in short, adult health conservation. It includes in its broad meaning not only the prevention of occupational diseases, such as silicosis, lead poisoning, cadmium poisoning, and many others, but such relative problems as overcrowding, fatigue, and personal and mental hygiene; exposure to abnormal temperatures, pressures, and humidities; ventilation, heating, and lighting. It is a science which requires the combined activity of medical personnel (doctors and nurses), engineers, and chemists to evaluate the exposures and determine the means of eliminating the hazard. The engineer surveys the workplace, takes air samples at the breathing level of the workman, and analyzes the work exposure. The chemist determines in his laboratory the exact amount of toxic material collected in the sample, which represents the exposure of the workman. The doctor must diagnose the occupational disease, recognize its cause, and evaluate the disability. Together, all three must correlate the data obtained and devise efficient methods, medical or engineering or process changes, for controlling or minimizing the dangerous condition and for studying the effectiveness of these measures. The plant doctor, in addition, must aid in the readjustment of the incapacitated worker and provide facilities for prevention. Industrial hygiene, however, is of no avail without the understanding co-operation of management.

GASIFICATION is important to the anthracite industry, as it is to the entire solid-fuel industry and to the nation. However, to the anthracite industry it may have particular significance in that it would increase the market value of many millions of tons of a by-product fuel, which the industry now has in storage and is currently producing, in addition to increasing the potential market for all its products. The by-product fuel is of usable quality but the ash content is higher than it can be in other products and therefore it must be converted or used at the point of production. Gasification is one method by which the product may be given increased value. The inherent characteristics of anthracite make it well suited for producing a fuel or synthesis gas. It is the most concentrated form of natural commercial carbon, noncaking and noncoking; it does not produce smoke, tar, or soot and has a low sulphur content; and the volatile matter, which ranges between 2 and 8 pct, is 80 to 85 pct hydrogen with small amounts of methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen. The ash fuses at high temperatures, which allows it to be burned at high rates without slagging. However, with the addition of small amounts of dolomite, the ash will form a slag, or glass, which is very fluid. Anthracite has long been used in the manufacture of city gas and it is extensively used in various parts of the country to make water gas to be converted to hydrogen. Buckwheat and rice anthracite are used in Galusha producers to make producer gas. Excellent synthesis gas has been made in a Galusha producer with rice and barley anthracite with oxygen in tests at the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co., Trail, British Columbia. In these tests, anthracite was shown to have advantages over competitive fuels, in that the gas had a higher hydrogen content and could be cleaned with less difficulty. The anthracite seams are steeply pitching and in mining the parting strata and some of the roof and bottom materials are taken with the coal. In preparation, these materials are separated by gravity from the commercial product and stored in refuse banks. This refuse contains a mixture of rock, slate, or shale, and high-ash anthracite with bone coal, which is low-ash coal that is interspersed with thin bands of shale. THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining. At the start of World War I1 the demand for iron ore to supply Woodward blast furnaces, and rapid exhaustion of the main source of Wood- ward ore, No. 3 Red Ore mine, necessitated speedy opening of the Pyne mine. The mine is three miles southwest of Bessemer and is responsible for 80 pct of Woodward ore, the rest coming from the Songo mine. The Woodward Iron Co. is one of the old producers of the Birmingham district. S. H. Woodward, an iron-master of Wheeling, overheard two Union soldiers conversing about ore and coal lands in Alabama, which lead to the acquisition of the first ore lands of the Woodward Co. in 1869. Development was not begun until after the death of S. H. Woodward; his two sons, W. H. Woodward and J. H. Woodward, formed the Woodward Iron Co. in 1881 and purchased a tract of land midway between the ore vein on the southeast and the coal field on the northeast about 12 miles southeast of Birmingham for the

IN a recent article,1 the authors reported the results of an X-ray investigation on the range of solid solutions that occurs in the iron-oxygen system in the vicinity of the compound FeO, which frequently is called "Wüstite." The object of that investigation was primarily to study the unusual type of solid solution phenomena involved in this range. Briefly summarized the results were: 1. The NaCl type of lattice found by earlier workers was confirmed. 2. The lattice dimensions decrease rapidly with decrease in iron content. 3. No alloy that was a homogeneous single phase was ever found at compositions beyond 76.80 per cent Fe, while the theoretical iron content of FeO is 77.73 per cent Fe. 4. Measurements of the densities and lattice constants led to the conclusion that the form of substitution was complex, an FeO group being replaced by oxygen. Such a substitution, of course, is equivalent to removing an iron atom (or ion). The ideal unit cell of FeO can be con-sidered as containing four groups of FeO and, thus, when this type of substitution takes place, there remain in the unit cell three FeO groups and an oxygen, or a total of seven atoms with a gross formula of Fe304 instead of the original Fe404. 5. This was the only interpretation that would fit the experimental results and at the same time be consistent with (a) the previously deter-mined fact that the FeO lattice is ionic (i. e., consists of Fe++ and 0= ions) and (b) the chemical fact that as the oxygen content of the substance increases, ferrous iron becomes oxidized to ferric iron. The experimental results of this investigation are included in Fig. 1.

The effect of fast-neutron irradiation on the micvo strcture of a common reactor pressure-vessel steel, A212 Grade B, was studied using thin-foil transmission electron microscopy. The dislocation density of the irradiated material is considerably greater than that of the nonirradiated control material. Annealing studies indicated that dislocations and hardness ill the irradiated material annealed out—as docs the radiation-induced embrittlement according to other- investigators— at temperatures STEELS in nuclear reactors are affected by neutron irradiation. In the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) A302B and A212B steels commonly specified by designers for reactor vessels, between 650° and 800°F. However, the dislocations and hardness in control samples cold-worked to 9 and 70 pct did not anneal out readily, and a high dis -location density was observed, even after a 1-hr anneal at 850°F. Based on the hypothesis that cllrster defects, rather than the increased dislocation density, are primarily responsible for mdicltiotz-iudziced e)nbriftlen7ent, reconzmendations are made for reducing the susceptibility to such ernbrittlement. exposures at a temperature of 550°F or lower to neutron dosages encountered during a 20- to 30-year life (-3 X 10'' nvt, >1 mev) may increase the nil-ductility transition temperature (NDT) as much as 300" or 400".'9 Therefore, to prevent brittle failures in reactor structures, extreme caution is required to reduce thermally induced stresses during all reactor shutdowns and startups when the temperature is below the NDT of the pressure vessel.

The electrical resistance of titanium as a function of purity and temperature was measured from —325" to 2800°F. Two points of inflection in the data plots were found, and an increase in resistance with increase in temperature above the transformation was observed. IN 1948 Greiner and Ellis' reported on the thermal and electrical properties of titanium, including a study of the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance. The materials used in the research were obtained from the United States Bureau of Mines, where powder metallurgy techniques were being employed for consolidation purposes. These authors found a decreasing resistance with increasing temperature above 1625°F, and concluded that the latter temperature represented the point of transformation from hexagonal close-packed to body-centered cubic structure on heating. They reported a specific resistivity value of 55x10-6 ohm-cm, and showed that dp/dt was positive, decreasing with increasing temperature above ambient. In one of his early texts Hume-Rothery2 mentioned that certain metals, including titanium, exhibited minima in plots of resistance vs temperature. He indicated that this occurred at 212°F. Reporting many years ago on the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance of zirconium, de Boer and Fast³ showed that phase transformation in this sister metal occurred over a range of temperatures, the extent varying with its purity. Graphs of resistance vs temperature, showing transformation effects over a range of several hundred degrees, were presented for relatively impure metal. In the latter case the resistance decreased with increasing temperature throughout the region of partial phase transformation, thereafter increasing as predicted for normal metals by modern theories of the solid state. Since the quality of metal used in previous studies was substandard compared with iodide-type titanium, and in view of the fact that there seemed to be some rather unusual observations in the reported literature, it was decided to undertake a more extensive study of the thermal effects using high purity titanium, and to include temperature ranges beyond those which had been studied in order to ascertain whether or not the characteristics of zirconium would be duplicated. Experimental Materials Materials used in this investigation included commercial quality titanium (Ti-75A produced by the Titanium Metals Corp. of America) in the form of ¼ in. diam rods, and high purity iodide titanium (produced by the Foote Mineral Co.) in the form of crystal bar of irregular size. The latter was cold-swaged into rod form and machined to the desired size. Lead wires to all specimens consisted of 18 gage Ti-75A. Chemical analyses of the stock materials are given in Table I. BRIEFLY, the ore body of the Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad, Ariz., is a monzonite porphyry carrying copper values fairly evenly distributed from the surface down through the primary zone. Tabular in shape, the ore body extends over several hundred acres. The oxidized zone averages about 60 ft thick and assays about 0.50 per cent copper. Under this is the chalcocite zone, or the zone of secondary enrichment, which averages about 100 ft in thickness and assays about 1.4 per cent copper. Under this zone lies the primary zone which extends in places to a known depth of about 150 ft and averages in grade about 0.60 per cent copper. Several years ago the block-caving method of extracting the ore from the chalcocite zone was installed. Then it was necessary to draw only about 250 to 300 tons per day, the capacity of the old milling plant. Early in 1943 the new 2500-ton concentrator was put into production. Drawing ore from the developed stopes in sufficient tonnage to furnish the mill at capacity proved unsuccessful in more ways than one. First, drawing the ore at an accelerated rate caused a large amount of dilution, there-by lowering the grade, and also caused funneling through to the surface. The surface material was detrimental to milling metallurgy and development of these stopes was costly per ton of ore extracted. The grade of ore decreased. making it impossible to maintain a mill head of over 0.9 per cent copper. The

OPERATIONS at the cement plant of the Permanente Corporation, in the hills about 45 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles west of San Jose, are interesting to the members because of the adoption of modern hydrometallurgical methods for handling and beneficiating raw materials. Closed-circuit grinding, classification, hydroseparation, flotation, agitation, and thickening are familiar terms at this cement plant. These methods make it possible to process refractory limestone into suitable materials for the manufacture of modern cements. Construction of the plant, having originally a design capacity of 7000 bbl. of cement per day, was started in June 1939, and the first clinker was ground on the following Christmas Day. At present the capacity is about 12,000 bbl. of finished cement per 24 hr., most of the production being low-heat cement. [t] About 3130 tons of limestone, 620 tons of clay and 100 tons of gypsum are required daily for this output. Occasionally iron oxide is added to the clay to obtain the desired composition. This, together with the gypsum, is purchased from outside sources. Up to the present time, the corporation has produced low-heat, normal, moderate-heat, moderate-sulphate-resisting, high-early-strength, oil-well, modified-oil-well, and plastic cements. Most of the present production is for Shasta Dam, near Redding, Calif., the total demand being 5.800,000 bbl. of cement. Theoretical modelling of a proposed sub-level open stoping mining system was carried out to assess pillar instability and potential for hanging wall caving. This modelling was done, at first, without detailed information concerning the rock mass structure and classification. After mining commenced, the deviance in behaviour from that predicted by the modelling indicated that the structure was having an appreciable modifying effect on behaviour. Further analysis was carried out with detailed engineering geological information and a recently developed pillar design method. The outlined procedure produced results for pillar size and strength that explained the behaviour that had been recorded.

The recent and rapid development of the physics of engineering materials at temperatures as low as that of liquid air and as high as that of the electric are, has drawn renewed attention to the absence of tables, properly printed and spaced, for the convenient and accurate translation of temperature from centigrade to Fahrenheit scales and vice versa. It is to be noted that the Fahrenheit scale is the almost universal usage in foundries and shops in the United States, though the laboratories of the same works employ the centigrade notation. The growing use of the electric furnace in Germany and France calls for much American citation all in centigrade high temperatures, and while the arithmetical calculation is simple, it becomes burdensome when often repeated. I have been surprised at the numerous reprints of Table I. from centigrade to Fahrenheit degrees, first privately printed for personal use, which have been made by works, blue-prints, text-books, and technical journals, and I hope that Table II., from Fahrenheit to centigrade degrees, will be equally useful. For mental calculation the easiest rule to convert centigrade into Fahrenheit is to add 32° to twice the centigrade reading less one-tenth of this product: Thus 1000' C. = 2000" — 200" + 32" = 1832" F., and to convert Fahrenheit to centigrade, subtract 32" from the Fahrenheit reading, multiply by 10 and divide by 2 and 9 successively : Thus 1000° F. = 1000° — 32° = 968° X 10 = 9680° - 2 = 4840° - 9 = 537.77° C. Another and often very convenient method is by 'use of a graphic construction as follows :

THE important advances that have been made of recent years in mining and milling methods and in mechanical equipment at mines need no re- telling, but there has been a remarkable growth in one type of equipment which has gone nearly unnoticed. That is the increasing use of storage-battery locomotives underground. Since the war the number of these locomotives and their field of use have increased tremendously; their growing acceptance represents an al- most complete reversal of opinion from an earlier period when they were generally looked upon as in- adequate for the strain of mine service. At the time when storage-battery powered units were first making their bid for recognition, the use of power in haulage had already passed through several phases; hand tramming, rope haulage, compressed air locomotives, even gasoline locomotives, had all been used, ending finally in the general adoption of the electric trolley locomotive for practically all power-haulage requirements. It was, and is, conceded that the trolley loco- motive met more adequately the varied and severe conditions of mine service than any previous type of haul- age unit. Subsequent developments have had to endure comparison and surpass in performance that type of haulage before changes would be considered.
