Published laboratory data have established that very significant streaming potentials can exist across mud cakes subjected to pressure differentials such as exist between a mud column and formation fluids. Since shale is similar in kind and in properties to a well-formed mud cake, it appeared possible that streaming potentials might also arise across shales. A practical consequence would be that the streaming potential contribution to the SP would be smaller than might otherwise be assumed since the SP is measured with respect to the "shale bare line". The resultant contribution would be the difference between the streaming potential across the shale and that across the mud cake. In order to investigate this possibility, a laboratory apparatus was devised for measuring streaming potentials under pressure conditions normally encountered in wells. Reported data on streaming potentids across mud cakes were verified. More important, appreciable streaming potentials were found across shale samples. As in the case of mud cakes, the shale potentials varied with the concentration and nature of the impregnating electrolyte. Dependence on pressure was In a different rela-tion than that for mud cakes, possibly because of the lower compressibility of shales. The differences in streaming potentials between the shales md mud cakes were generally small, although they might vary considerably in practice depending on the relative electro-kinetic properties of the particular shale-mud cuke combination. A "poorly eflective" shale with a "very eflec-tive mud cake" would produce the largest negative addition to the electrochemical component of the SP. Results of field experiments with pressurized wells were considered in the light of the laboratory results. INTRODUCTION Field experiments wherein the pressure of the mud column in a borehole was varied have often indicated the presence of a streaming potential, but its magnitude was not easily predictable and its sign sometimes changed from one formation to another in the same well.' In the interpretation of SP logs from standard surveys, nevertheless, the correct value of R,, is very frequently obtained, within the limits of field accuracy, using only the simple electrochemical expression of the SP provided that proper corrections are made for bed thickness, ion activity, etc.' Accordingly, it was apparent that the streaming potential component of the SP in a borehole was considerably more complex than commonly assumed and clarification was indeed necessary The close similarity in nature and constitution of a shale to a well-compacted mud cake suggested that a streaming potential might also exist across shales as pointed out by M. P. Tixier in 1953 and as recently emphasized by Wyllie." e practical consequence would be that the streaming potential across the mud cake would be canceled, at least in part, on electrical logs since the SP is recorded with respect to the shale potential as a base line. This appeared to be a plausible explanation for many of the effects observed but no supporting data were available. In 1955 preliminary experiments at low pressures were conducted in our laboratories which supported the hypothesis of the shale streaming potential and formed the basis for later studies at borehole pressures.* EARLY LOW PRESSURE EXPERIMENTS The early experiments were conducted primarily to determine the possibility of a streaming potential across shales. The shale used was a compact type designated as No. 7 from Reagan County, Tex. (Permian). Cut samples were saturated for over one month in .2 to 2.0-N NaCl solutions. ENROLMENT data given in this report of the seventh study of the schools by the Mineral Industry Education Division reveals the critical situation in the mineral engineering schools of the United States. Complete figures for the year 1942-43 show that at that time, about one year after Pearl Harbor, the enrollment of mineral engineers was 6385 or 30 per cent less than in 199441. By October 1943, however, enrollment had dropped to 2050, as reported in the Journal of Engineering Education of January 1944. This was a further reduction of 68 per cent in one year, or 77 per cent in three years. With accelerated programs in effect during the current year, with many graduations since last October, and with the military forces taking practically all the high school graduates, the present enrollment is, of course, much lower than the 2050 above given. The effects of aeration on an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite were studied and their results correlated with flotation tests using xanthates as collectors. The effects of copper activation and of pH variation were determined and possible mechanisms postulated. PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents,3 or by starch.' The object of this work was to study the floatabil-ity of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH. Preparation of the Pyrrhotite Sample: It was desirable that the highest grade of pyrrhotite obtainable be used for this experiment, since the presence of other minerals could affect the surface properties.5 However, no pyrrhotite was available as crystals, and massive deposits of hydrothermal origin commonly contain considerable amounts of chalcopyrite. Pyrrhotite concentrate was, therefore, prepared from a sulphide deposit occurring near Aitkin, Minn. The deposit is of pyrometamorphic nature consistirlg mainly of pyrrhotite and pyrite with graphite, silicates, and carbonates as gangue. The ore, already crushed through 3 mesh when received, was screened at 65 mesh and the undersize discarded. The oversize was crushed through rolls, and then stage-ground dry in an Abbe porcelain mill, the —65 mesh portion being screened out after every 15 min of grinding until all the material passed through this size. The ground product was then concentrated with a drum-type dry magnetic separator. The rougher concentrate was cleaned twice and then demagnetized. The final product was split in a Jones splitter and stored in air-tight bottles. Microscopic examination of the concentrate showed that it was relatively clean and free of pyrite, locked particles, and gangue. By means of the krypton gas adsorption method," the specific surface was determined to be 3000 cm2 per g. The chemical and screen analyses of the final concentrate are given in Tables I and II respectively. It is a well-recognized fact that the oxidation of some sulphide ores during stockpiling, grinding, and conditioning affects their flotation behavior. The problem of oxidation may become serious in the case of pyrrhotite, since this is known to be more easily oxidized than many other sulphides. To ascertain the extent of oxidation, an experiment was carried out by aerating an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite with air, oxygen, and nitrogen as follows. A 300-g sample of pyrrhotite in 2700 ml of water was agitated and simultaneously aerated in a Fager-gren-type laboratory flotation machine. A Precision wet test meter was connected to the air inlet valve, the flow rate of the gas being kept constant at 0.3 cu ft per min throughout the experiment. Samples of approximately 30 ml each were taken from the cell at 0, 4, 10, 20, 35, 60, and 90 min. After the pH was taken, each sample was filtered and the filtrate was analyzed for total iron and sulphur. The iron was determined colorimetrically by the thioglycolate method using a green filter.' The filtrate was oxidized with bromine to convert all of the soluble sulphur compounds into sulphate and this was determined with a Parr turbidimeter." When aeration tests were made in alkaline circuit, calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide was added at regular intervals to maintain a constant pH. A similar procedure was followed in an experiment to determine the abstraction of copper. ion by pyrrhotite. In this case various quantities of cupric chloride were added. The filtrate from each sample taken was analyzed for copper, total iron, and sulphur. The carbamate method with a green filter was used for the copper analysis,' since this method could tolerate a considerable amount of iron in the solution. A pneumatic cell, made from a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel, was used for this experiment. The detail of the assemblage has been described elsewhere." In the present work a stainless steel baffle was inserted in the cell. This baffle overcame the tendency for the coarse pyrrhotite particles to be swirled around the wall of the cell and thus fail to collect in the froth. A 50-g sample of pyrrhotite was added to the cell which contained 260 ml of water. When pretreat-ment of the sample was desired, reagents, such as activator and pH regulator, were then added and the pulp was conditioned for a specified conditioning time. Prior to the addition of the collector approximately 15 ml of the solution were removed for pH measurement and for iron and sulphur analyses. Copper when used as activator was also determined. Collector and frother were then added and the pulp was conditioned for an additional 2 min. Air was admitted to the cell and the froth removed. The separation required from 4 to 6 min, depending on the characteristics of the froth. The float and non-float products were filtered, dried, weighed, and assayed for iron.

Before the outbreak of the war in 1914, the only electric-furnace smelting plant operating on a commercial basis west of the Mississippi River was an electric pig-iron plant in California; rare metal ores were not smelted, concentrates of molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, and vanadium ores being shipped east for reduction. Practically no- chrome ore was being mined, and only comparatively small amounts of manganese ore. Today there are two electric smelting plants in California, one in Washington, one in Iowa, and four in Colorado; two plants are under construction in California, and one in Montana. Ores of manganese, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten are now smelted in the West, and although uranium and vanadium concentrates are still shipped to the East, they will probably be treated in western plants in a short time. THE anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.1-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non- adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. Selection criteria for the instrumentation employed in semi-autogenous grinding circuits are reviewed. Instruments in use for grinding mill and related process equipment start- up, shutdown, protection, monitoring, control, and performance reporting functions are discussed with examples given of current industry practice. The quantity and type of instrumentation used vary from operation to operation, but today many semi- autogenous circuits are highly instrumentated, and employ automatic process control for both circuit stabilization and optimization of economic performance. Examples of analog and digital based control systems exist, and are described.

Field observations were made of rock phenomena in shale, dolomite, and fractured quartzite in the Burgin Mine, Eureka, Utah. Draft closure rates were measured with extensometers and convergence gages. In addition the effects of hydraulic props upon the retardation of closure was also monitored. Drift closure rates were found to be constant and to vary between 0.32 x 10-8 min-1 for dolomite and 23.8 x 10-8 min-1 for soft shale. The installation of props set at constant load served to retard the closure rates. General results show closure to occur at a constant rate for all cases, to be non-uniform around the drift openings, and to be increasingly retarded toward a zero rate by increases in prop load.

A quasi-thermodynamic calculation is presented for estirt~ating vacancy Parameters in fcc metals. For fcc metals the equilibrium vacancy concentration at the melting point can be approximated by a constant mole fraction. The Gibbs free energy of formation of the vacancies can then be expressed as a simple function of the absolute melting temperature alone. From this description the formation energy Ef, the vibrational entropy Sv, and the formation volume of a vacancy can be calculated in terms of known thermodynamic parameters. The calculated values are in good agree-rnent with available experimental results. IT appears that many of the physical parameters associated with lattice defects can be empirically related to thermodynamic melting parameters.'-7 Besides the implicit correlations between melting phenomenon and point defects, the melting temperature itself at atmospheric pressure can be used as a reference temperature for the purpose of comparison of vacancy concentrations in a given crystal class. The concentration at the melting point then corresponds to the maximum vacancy super saturation in the crystalline state at a fixed pressure. For pure fcc metals such as Au, Cu, Al, Ag, Pb, and Pt the mole fraction of vacancies at the melting point8 is of the order of 10*"3 to 10"1. The equation expressing the equilibrium vacancy concentration at the melting point contains three parameters: the formation energy, the vibrational entropy, and the absolute melting temperature, see Eq. [2]. Since these three parameters cover a wide range of values8 in the above-mentioned metals, it can be assumed that in other fcc metals, for which no reliable data are available, the mole fraction of vacancies at the melting point most likely lies in the range 10~3 to lO"4. This is then the basis of the calculations described in this article. Within this range the mixing entropy can be linearized and the vibrational entropy, the formation energy, and the vacancy formation volume can be calculated in terms of known thermodynamic constants. 1} LINEARIZATION OF MIXING ENTROPY The Helmholtz free energy of a crystal containing n vacancies at the melting point can be writteng as where Ef, T,, k, and S, are the formation energy of a vacancy, the absolute melting temperature, Boltz-mann's constant, and the vacancy formation entropy, respectively. After applying Stirling's approximation in Eq. [l] and minimizing with respect to n where (n/N), is the equilibrium vacancy concentration in mole fraction at the melting temperature at 1 atm pressure. If instead of setting (6~/6n) = 0 immediately after Stirling's approximation in Eq. [I], the configurational partition function is simplified, then some useful and significant results can be obtained by utilizing the experimental inforrnation After applying Stirling's approximation and rearranging is plotted as a function of (n/N) in Fig. 1. As I drove in from the airport on Sunday somebody said 'On the right you will see Duntroon, which is the military training school of Australia.' So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? 'Oh,' he said, 'from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. There is also a story I should tell you about the oil industry and its upsurge in Scotland recently which has resulted in great prosperity. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources. Charlotte Square, as some of you know, is the centre of the Scottish financial world and at one of the corners of Charlotte Square, where ho streets intersect, there are three stores-three emporia on the ground floor. Two of them at opposite corners are banks: The Royal Bank of Scotland, and not to be beaten by that, The Bank of Scotland. But the third building is occupied, or was occupied, by a furniture store over many years-very high-grade, high quality furniture that the elite of the Edinburgh society always supported. And suddenly, the store was cleared out and in came a bunch of carpenters and other people busily engaged in rebuilding the store, and finally the new tenants arrived on the scene.

Abstract-Although the ore microscopist routinely examines polished sections to determine the mineralogy and texture of ores, his importance to the solution of problems peripheral to geology is not always fully realized. The techniques which he uses can be applied with little modification to the solution of a wide variety of beneficiation problem. By extending his studies beyond those normally considered to be of interest to the geologist, he can include examinations of polished sections of selected mill products. This is a logical extension, because the minerals and textures in the polished sections of ores are the same as those in mill Products. The mill dressing engineer should be more aware of the types of beneficiation problems that can be solved by the ore microscopist and what the ore microscopist can do for him. A greater degree of cooperation between the ore microscopist and the mill dressing engineer can be of significant mutual benefit. Ore microscopy holds an advantage over chemical analysis, because the interrelations and combinations of the mineral constituents of an ore or mil1 product can be visually determined. This advantage provides solutions to many beneficiation problems. Locking is a type of beneficiation problem that is particularly amenable to ore microscopy. The percentage, type, and distribution of locked particles can be readily determined with the aid of an ore microscope and an estimate made of the extent of additional grinding required for liberation. The extent of intimately locked types, which no reasonable amount of grinding will liberate, can also be evaluated. Mineral coating conditions, free particles of a deleterious mineral, and free particles of a valuable mineral held in floculated clusters of gangue are other features that can readily be observed. In some instances, visual examination may show that the problem is not one of locking. Photomicrographs illustrate the variety of beneficiation problems for which the ore microscope is applicable. These problems and their resolution demonstrate the importance of the instrument and show the value of close coordination between the mill dressing engineer and the ore microscopist.

Constantan is an alloy of copper and nickel that is extensively used, under a number of trade names, as a resistance wire with a low temperature coefficient of resistance, and one of the elements of base-metal thermocouples, iron usually being the other thermoelement, although for low-temperature work copper is also used. Before the war, constantan was imported, in common with many other technical necessities. Since it required considerable time to receive the constantan after it was ordered, fairly large stocks were kept on hand; but after the beginning of the war no more was imported and the stocks of foreign material were exhausted about the same time that the steel and munition manufacturers began to need great quantities of it for thermocouples for the heat treatment of steel. To meet this demand, the International Nickel Co. began manufacturing constantan that met all the requirements of the users of resistance wire but did not give the same electromotive force against iron as the German material and consequently could not be used with instruments calibrated for a definite e.m.f.-temperature relation. It so happened that all the constantan made had an e.m.f. lower than that necessary to meet the specifications of the Leeds & Northrup Co. for whom this investigation was carried out. If some had been higher and some lower, good wire could have been obtained by a process of selection, but as it was no wire at all could be procured. To remedy this situation, a thorough investigation was started with the close cooperation of the International Nickel Co. and the Electrical Alloys Co. The specifications to which the constantan had to conform were that it should give an e.m.f. of 47.40 millivolts against pure iron at 1500" F. (816" C.) with the cold-junction temperature at 0" F., or a proportional e.m.f. at temperatures near 1500" F. The method of checking a wire was as follows: It was first welded to a piece of iron wire; Armco iron was found to be satisfactory but iron with greater than 0.1 per cent. carbon would give a lower e.m.f. against the same piece of constantan than pure iron. BACKGROUND OF SURFACE MINING Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal mere mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-pear periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu pd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu pd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining. 4) Surface mining normally recovers a much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures call best be extracted by surface mining

ANY metal which contains even a small percentage of aluminum possesses certain peculiarities of appearance and properties which are exhibited both when the metal is melted and after it solidifies. Pure aluminum, or an alloy containing a small proportion of aluminum, can be melted without flux-except for a layer of charcoal-because a film of aluminum oxide and metal forms at the surface of melted aluminum. Although very thin, this film is air-proof, and it prevents the metal underneath from oxidizing. This oxidized film does not move easily on account of its toughness and high surface tension. One very important point in connection with this process of still casting has not been strongly enough stressed, namely, that the same kind of surface film with the same peculiarities forms over the surface of all melted alloys that contain even a small proportion of aluminum. Experienced foundrymen know how desirable it is to cast aluminum under its "skin" or-under the surface of the film which tends to remain still. In the case of red copper, when in fusion, the surface shows pure copper only. This is due to the fact that liquid copper constantly absorbs the copper oxide which forms on the surface. By closely examining melting copper the oxide can be seen dissolving in the bath, and going into solution just as pulverized sugar dissolves in water. When copper is cast in the open, either in wire bars or cakes, the surface of metal exposed to the air is covered by a film of black, oxide that cannot be absorbed by the metal.

In a recent article,1 the authors reported the results of an X-ray investigation on the range of solid solutions that occurs in the iron-oxygen system in the vicinity of the compound FeO, which frequently is called "wüstite." The object of that investigation was primarily to study the unusual type of solid solution phenomena involved in this range. Briefly summarized the results were: 1. The NaCl type of lattice found by earlier workers was confirmed. 2. The lattice dimensions decrease rapidly with decrease in iron content. 3. No alloy that was a homogeneous single phase was ever found at compositions beyond 76.80 per cent Fe, while the theoretical iron content of FeO is 77.73 per cent Fe. 4. Measurements of the densities and lattice constants led to the conclusion that the form of substitution was complex, an FeO group being replaced by oxygen. Such a substitution, of course, is equivalent to removing an iron atom (or ion). The ideal unit cell of FeO can be considered as containing four groups of FeO and, thus, when this type of substitution takes place, there remain in the unit cell three FeO groups and an oxygen, or a total of seven atoms with a gross formula of Fe3O4 instead of the original Fe4O4. 5. This was the only interpretation that would fit the experimental results and at the same time be consistent with (a) the previously determined fact that the FeO lattice is ionic (i, e., consists of Fe++ and O? ions) and (b) the chemical fact that as the oxygen content of the substance increases, ferrous iron becomes oxidized to ferric iron. The experimental results of this investigation are included in Fig. 1. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the limits of this homogeneity range by means of the X-ray structure analysis. This method has been applied frequently to the study of solid solutions by Westgren and his coworkers as well as by other investigators. I HAVE been introduced in the dual capacity of president of the Canadian Institute and Metals Controller for Canada. There are three particular points of similarity between these two positions. They are both temporary ; they both have to do with the mining industry ; and by a peculiar coincidence they both pay me exactly the same salary. It is difficult to appreciate the background of our present situation without knowing the really tremendous changes that have taken place since the last war. I sometimes think that even among ourselves we are likely to forget the extent to which our great mining industry has been expanded. In 1914 Canada's gold production amounted to only $16,000,000 and the suggestion was seriously ad¬vanced in Ottawa that the gold mines should be allowed to close down so that their men might be used in more important work. Today with a production at the rate of over $200,000,000 a year no one in Canada would venture such a suggestion because the output of our gold mines is the greatest single factor in producing dollar exchange, badly needed for the purchase of munitions and to maintain Canada's unbroken record of always meeting its obligations. Even with the severe restrictions now in effect against the importation of nonessentials, our imports for war purposes from the United States are resulting in the biggest adverse trade balance in our history. With us, gold mining ranks as an essential industry.

A study was made to delineate the dislocation mechanistns controlling prismatic and basal slip at low temperatu.ves in titanium containing approximately 100 ppm interstitial impurities. Mechanical tests were performed on single crystals prepared from electron-beam zone-refined crystal bar by a thermal cycling technique. Measurements were made of critical shear stress and activation volume as functions of temperature. The study revealed that, for prismatic slip, two overlapping thermally activated processes aye rate-controlling below 300°K. From absolute zero to 220°K, reasonable agreement is obtained between experiment and the mechanism which involves overcoming 01. the Peierl's stress by the formation of double kinks in dislocation lines lying in close-packed directions. Between 220°and 300°K prismatic slip is controlled by a difierent thermally activated process which is characterized by a stronger temperature dependence of critical shear stress. Above 300OK, prismatic slip is controlled by an athermal process. Basal slip is controlled by a thermally activated process between 195' and 400°K. An approximate analysis suggests that it is the Peierl's mechanism that is rate-controlling in this range. Below 195°K, the occurrence of mechanical twinning obscures the features of basal slip. Above '400 X, basal slip is controlled by an athermal process. TITANIUM, an hcp metal with a less-than-ideal axial ratio of 1.587, deforms primarily by {1010}( 1210) slip at low temperatures.'-3 The critical shear stress is strongly affected by the presence of interstitial impurities. For example, churchman3 reported that a decrease in the combined nitrogen plus oxygen content from 0.1 to 0.01 pct decreased the critical shear stress for prismatic slip from 9.19 to 1.4 kg per sq mm at room temperature. Basal slip, however, is less strongly affected by interstitials; Churchman's data for {0001}( 1210) slip show a smaller decrease in critical shear stress from 10.90 to 6.3 kg per sq mm at room temperature, for the same decrease in interstitial content. In the present study, an attempt has been made to delineate the dislocation mechanisms controlling prismatic and basal slip in titanium. In view of the strong effects that impurities may have on at least some of these mechanisms, experiments were performed on material of reasonably high purity, so that comparisons could be made with investigations on material of both lower and higher impurity contents. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals were prepared from 1/4-in.-diam electron-beam zone-refined crystal bar, furnished by Materials Research Corp. The analysis of the zone-refined material is given in Table I, indicating that the interstitial content is of the same order as the purer of the two materials investigated by Churchman. The Vickers diamond pyramid hardness number of this material was 85.6. This value agrees quite well with the correlation between hardness and interstitial content proposed by Ogden and Jaffee.4 On the basis of hardness, the material investigated in this study is, therefore, intermediate in purity between that studied by Churchman (Vpn = 97) and that studied by Spangler and Herman (Vpn = 62.4).5 Single crystals were grown by thermal cycling through the a-ß transformation. Two-in.-long by 1/2-in.-diam bars were heat-treated in vacuum for 4 hr at 1160°C. The temperature of the furnace was then lowered to 865°C, and the specimens were maintained at this temperature for 7 days. This procedure was repeated several times, resulting in the growth of individual crystals up to 14 in. in length. Specimens for testing in direct shear along either {l010}(1210) or {0001}(1210) were obtained by electrical-discharge machining. The specimens were in the form of cylinders 1/4 in. in diam by approximately 1/2 in. in length, with a reduced section 1/8 in. in diam and a in. in length. All specimens were electropol-ished subsequent to electrical-discharge machining. The ends of the test specimens were cemented in stainless-steel collars. Shear tests were conducted in an Instron Tensile Tester at various temperatures from 4.2° to 508°K. Measurements were made of critical shear stress and activation volume. The latter measurements were performed by measuring the change in flow stress upon cycling the strain rate between ?1 = 2.62 x 10-3 per sec and ?2 = 2.62 x 10-4 per sec. INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal colliers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit train practice large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Two surveys of storage practices at mines reveal several objectives for storage.1, 2 Raw and/or clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To improve plant efficiency by distributing plant feed over the entire operating time, or to allow a preparation rate different from the production rate. 2. To limit interruptions of supply, ie, allow mine and plant to function independently with delays in one not affecting the operation of the other.

A number of cases of low-temperature, intergranu2ar brittle fracture of metals containing small amounts of certain impurities, have now been identified. Some degree of understanding of this phenomenon exists for the simpler binary systems of a metal and a single impurity, but the profound effects of other impurities and alloying elements in modifying this type of behavior remain unexplained. Current research in this area is reviewed and some of the newer techniques of investigation which should make possible a more quantitative study of the structure and composition of grain boundaries in impure metals are described. To indicate the subject matter of this lecture, we may begin by reviewing the experimental observations concerning low-temperature intergranular brittleness in impure metals, particularly those examples in which the embrittlement appears to result from what has been called "equilibrium grain boundary segregation."' These are the systems in which it has been impossible, at least up to now, to detect the presence of any second phase film at the brittle interfaces. When second phase films are present they are usually readily detectable by fractographic methods, often appearing as epitaxial films in geometric or dendritic patterns. An example is shown in Fig. 1 for the case grain boundary carbides in a sensitized stainless steel which failed by intergranular brittle fracture at 78?k2 In contrast to this type of embrittlement there are numerous examples of low-temperature intergranular embrittlement in which the fractographs are essentially featureless, for example, that of an oxygen-embrittled iron shown in Fig. 2. The only second phase particles visible are the small, widely separated, round oxide particles typical of the bulk material. The fracture surface is extremely smooth and the fracture path appears to follow the intergranular interface without deviation. This type of fractograph also implies that crack propagation has occurred without plastic deformation at the crack tip, since localized slip or twinning ahead of the crack would be expected to distort the interface and be readily visible in the fractograph. Such indications are occasionally seen in these fractographs, but are not characteristic. A second example of this type of fractograph is shown in Fig. 3, which is from a temper-embrittled, carbon-free, Fe-Cr-Ni alloy containing Sb, broken at 1OO?C.3 The similarity to the oxygen embrittled iron case will be apparent. In the case of the temper embrittled Cr-Ni ferrite containing antimony, it is possible to remove the embrittlement by suitable thermal treatment. The grain boundaries may then be examined by thin film transmission in the electron microscope for the material in both the nonembrittled condition and in the embrittled condition.
