Maurice Rey—The influence of cyclone diameter upon the fineness of separation is an important point which, however, cannot be discussed adequately if the injection pressure or the rate of flow are not specified. Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D0' " Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahlstrom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.

IN recent publications1-5 the existence and behavior of subgrain boundaries in high-purity metals has been clearly brought to light. Lacombe and Beaujardl by means of special etching methods disclosed in polycrystalline sheets of aluminum the existence of substructures differing in orientation by small amounts (about 1/4"). Boundaries of these structures at relatively high temperatures had the remarkable property' of moving about while the ordinary boundaries remained stationary. Cahn2 also observed substructures in bent and annealed single crystals of aluminum, zinc, magnesium, and rock salt. The position of subboundaries could be explained in terms of a dislocation mechanism of polygonization in which dislocations move into lines at right angles to the bent glide planes thereby relieving elastic stresses in these planes. Guinier and Tennevin8,6 disclosed the further interesting feature that polygonized structures coarsened significantly upon prolonged annealing. Somewhat similar subgrain phenomena have been observed in silicon iron of commercial purity. Although some evidence for the development of macro-mosaic structures in silicon iron already has been reported by one of the authors6,7 under the phenom-enological term "crystal recovery," much better evidence recently has been obtained due to improved etching techniques. In addition, phenomena regarding structural changes have been uncovered. The present investigation is divided into three parts: (1) The phenomenon of Laue spot sharpening on annealing cold-rolled crystals, (2) the phenomena of polygonization and subgrain coarsening The material used in the present investigation was high-grade commercial silicon iron sheet of nominal composition, 3.3 pct Si, 0.004 C, 0.011 P, 0.010 S, 0.04 Mn, 0.01 Al, 0.04 Cu, 0.01 Sn. Large single crystals of this material Were prepared for cold-rolling or bending as scheduled. Cold-rolling of 12 pct was carried out on a laboratory 8-in, diam rolling mill. Individual specimens were cut from the deformed crystals, and the cut edges were deeply etched prior to annealing. Laue photographs were made using 40-kv tungsten radiation. The technique used to disclose the various subboundaries was an electropolish and electroetch in a bath of chrome-acetic acid.' The anodic polishing done at 22 v was immediately followed by etching at a reduced voltage, which was dependent upon the nature of the subboundaries. Phenomenon of Laue Spot Sharpening on Annealing Cold-Rolled Crystals Fig. 1 gives the initial and final orientations of the specimens cold-rolled 12 pct. Each specimen was annealed at a temperature and for a time which caused significant structural changes as evidenced by alterations in Laue patterns. Representative Laue patterns and micrographs showing the essential changes are given in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The essential points to be derived from these illustrations follow: 1. Annealing at 950°C clearly develops a substructure with the orientation of the cold-rolled specimen. 2. The subboundaries formed obviously separate regions of nearly the same orientation. Some of the subboundaries appear as a sequence of dots similar to those observed in aluminum by Lacombe and Beaujard,' but whether this is due to extremely small differences in orientation is not known at present. 3. The substructure coarsens upon prolonged annealing. 4. Prolonged annealing also causes a decrease in orientation spread according to Laue spot sharpening'

Single crystals of high purity aluminum of various orientations were carefully documented after plastic extension. Special attention was given to the formation of slip lines, deformation bands, and asterism. An explanation for the geometry and mechanism of formation of deformation bands is considered. WHILE the general process of plastic extension of face-centered cubic metals is well understood,' the accompanying structural changes due to slip and rotation are far more complex than ordinarily assumed. In the case of stretched single crystals of aluminum, the complicated behavior is especially marked by the formation of deformation bands, as first indicated by Collins and Mathewson." Such bands were believed by them and also by others,".'7 who have discussed banded structure in general, to represent one of the important modes of lattice reorientation and to be intimately connected with the recrystallization process. Yet, despite their fundamental importance to the understanding of the mechanism df both plastic deformation and recrystallization, practically no study of the crystallographic features of these bands in their relationship to the conventional slip process has been attempted. This paper describes part of an extensive investigation on the structural behavior during plastic deformation of aluminum single crystals and is especially concerned with the characteristics of deformation bands. The investigation of the subsequent re-crystallization of deformed aluminum single crystals will be discussed in a later publication. Experimental Procedure Single crystal specimens of 99.996+ pct pure aluminum, Yz in. in diam and 5 to 6 in. in length were made both by the Bridgman method5 nd by a modified temperature gradient method.'* Crystals were selected in which the lineage deviation did not exceed 2"; i.e., as determined from the back-reflection Laue X-ray photograms. These crystals were radiographed to insure that no internal porosity was present. The orientations showed good coverage of the whole area of the Taylor and Elam triangle.' Orientations of the crystals were obtained by the back-reflection Laue technique described by Greninger." Crystals so selected were tapered very carefully in a lathe to obtain a linear decrease in diameter from 0.500 to 0.350 in. along a gage length of 3 in. This is considered desirable because it permits a strain gradient to be introduced in a single specimen at one initial orientation. The advantages of tapered crystals for studying the development of slip lines and recrystallized grains have been pointed out by previous investigators." The cold-worked layer resulting from the machining operation was removed by alternate etching in aqua regia and careful polishing with 2/0 emery paper until undistorted Laue back-reflection spots were obtained. A homogenization treatment at 600 °C for 24 hr was then introduced to insure the removal of residual stress. Two of the crystals so prepared were also checked by use of a glancing angle technique. Using a copper target, at 30 kv and 10 microamperes, a monochromatic beam was positioned at right angles to the axis of the crystal about which it rotated. The time of exposure was 24 hr. From these X-ray photograms, it was concluded that the present method of preparation of single crystals is satisfactory. Following this procedure, the crystals were elec-trolytically polished in a 2:l solution of methyl alcohol and concentrated nitric acid. Intermittent

Since publication of the First Edition of "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking," in 1944, this book has been a major reference on the subject of steelmaking. The Second Edition of 1951 was so fundamental that it has retained its general usefulness to the present date. However, recently some of the material has been updated in connection with the writing of a companion book, "Electric Furnace Steelmaking." The sponsor of these two books, the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking Committee, has felt that the new material should be made equally available to purchasers of either book. Accordingly the subject matter of Chapters 14, 15, and 16 of this new edition is duplicated by corresponding chapters in "Electric Furnace Steelmaking." It was also recognized that the use of oxygen in the open hearth and in the new basic oxygen processes represents a major development that should not be omitted from any basic reference. Thus the major new feature of this Third Edition is the supplement on "Oxygen in Steelmaking." The cooperation of the Iron and Steel Division's Acid Converter and Basic Oxygen Steel Committee (now merged to form the National Open Hearth and Basic Oxygen Steel Committee) is specifically recognized. In addition to the authors of chapters listed elsewhere, it should be noted that Arthur B. Wilder was the Committee Chairman. Although the changes in the Third Edition are important, the Committee cannot overlook the classic character of the Second Edition. This edition was edited by W. O. Philbrook and M. B. Bever in collaboration with H. B. Emerick and B. M. Larsen. It is anticipated that the Third Edition will maintain the value of the book until the current rapid changes in all basic steelmaking processes stabilize themselves sufficiently to justify a complete revision of the entire text in Part I. The experienced service of Wesley Burr in incorporating the new material in the index is also recognized.

The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and. low reagent cost. WHEN Duval Sulphur and Potash Co. recently entered the established potash industry, the vast amount of pioneer work essential in an entirely new endeavor was unnecessary. Thus it was possible to screen and assemble proved techniques into a highly efficient process based on the combined knowledge of the industry. It is hoped that the refinements Duval has added to these cumulative achievements will contribute to the rapid advance of the potash industry and related enterprises. The process selected utilizes as raw material syl-vinite ore typical of the Permian Basin. This ore is principally comprised of interlocked crystals of potassium chloride, about 40 pct, and sodium chloride. Also there is as much as 1 1/2 pct of dispersed clay slime which, because of its nature, highly complicates beneficiation of these ores. The refining method is basically flotation in which the mineral sylvite is floated away from the halite-clay gangue to produce a 60 pct K,O muriate of potash product for the plant-food trade. In order to recover coal concentrate of low ash and low iron content, the electrostatic separation of coal was studied. It is more successful in the corona discharge field to recover the coal concentrate of low ash and low iron content than in the field without corona discharge. The effect of humidity on the electrostatic separation of coal was then studied. From the experimental results, it was clear that the electrostatic separation was excellent in about 60% relative humidity of atmosphere. Thus, the separation of vitrite from coal is practicable by electrostatic separation. In recent years the demand for high quality coal containing low ash, low iron, and low sulfur has increased. To fulfill this requirement, a higher grade coal concentrate must be produced. Study on the electrostatic separation of coal has been performed for several years in the author's laboratory. From the results of this research, it was considered that the behavior of coal particles in the electrostatic field relates closely to the ash and iron content in coal. In the present paper, the electrostatic separation of coal in corona discharge field was studied in order to recover the high quality coal concentrate and then the effect of humidity on the electrostatic separation was investigated. PREPARATION OF COAL SAMPLES The coals from the Akabira mine, the Kushiro mine, the Miike mine, and the Oshima mine which are famous coal mines in Japan were used in this study. The ash contents of these coals are shown in Table I. From the results of the analysis of the coal samples by the Norelco X-ray diffractometer, it is recognized that the Miike coal includes mainly pyrite, quartz, kaoline, calcite, and epidote; the Kushiro coal: kaoline, quartz, and montmorillonite, and the Oshima coal: siderite, dolomite, and other substances. For the preparation of samples, the coarse pieces of coal were crushed to about 2 mm in diam and then ground in an agator mortar. The ground products were sieved and fractions of 10 — 14 mesh, 14 — 20 mesh, 20-28 mesh, and 28-35 mesh were prepared, respectively. APPARATUS OF ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The principal part of the apparatus of the electrostatic separation used in the experiments is shown in Fig. 1. In order to generate the corona discharge field, a needle-shaped electrode combined with a pole electrode is installed as the high tension electrode. In the case of investigating the effects of the humidity on the electrostatic separation of coal, the needle-shaped electrode was combined with a plate electrode instead of the pole electrode as shown in Fig. 2. The pole or the plate electrode was installed to promote the repelling of the charged particles by producing the electrostatic field between this electrode and the grounded roller. It seems to be very useful on the coal separation to install these combined high tension electrodes. SEPARATION OF COAL PARTICLES IN CORONA DISCHARGE FIELD The separation testings on the coal samples in the corona discharge field were performed by the apparatus as shown in Fig. 1. These experiments were carried out under the following conditions: feed size 20 — 28 mesh, room temperature, normal humidity and applied voltage 15-20 KV, and the combined electrodes including the needle-shaped electrode were negatively charged. INCREASED mining activity during the past year has brought to light changes in mining practice and advances in technique, born and incubated in the period of depression from which the mining industry is now emerging. Although the tendency toward large output from individual mines has continued, a salutary trend is evident toward greater efficiency at small mines, in which the gold mines of Canada have led the way. Improvement in excavating machinery and washing plants for small placers has continued, and knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of this kind of equipment has increased. Greater portability through sectionalization has been the keynote. Power, shovels and draglines mounted on caterpillar treads move from one deposit to another under their own power, and floating washing plants mounted on pontoons can be taken down, moved, and set up again by a small crew of men in only a few days.

The relative machinabilities of the precipitation-hardenable Cu-0.9 pct Cr, Cu-0.25 pct Zr, and Cu-0.9 pct Cr-0.25 pct Zr alloys are improved from 18 to 80 pct by 0.75 to 1.25 pct Pb. The Lead also improves the tensile strength, hardness, ad resistance to softening of the Cu-Cr and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys. When the alloy containing 0.7 to 2.2 pct Cr, 0.10 to 0.25 pct Zr, 0.75 to 1.25 pct Pb, and balance copper is solution-annealed at 1000°C (1830°F) and then aged at 525°C (Y75°F), tensile strength of 65,000 psi, 16 pct elongation, 62Rb hardness, and 84 to 87pct IACS electrical conductivity are obtained. The copper base Cu-Cr, Cu-Zr, and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys have high electrical and thermal conductivities, high strength and resistance to softening at elevated temperatures, but their machinability is poor, i.e., close to that of the pure copper. In the manufacture of various components such as welding electrodes or electrical and thermal conductors it is ofter desirable that the alloy have good machinability for high production rates and long tool life. Thus, alloys that combine these properties may be used not only for existing applications, but for new ones where good machinability is a requirement. This investigation was undertaken to improve machinability without impairing other desirable characteristics of the Cu-Cr, Cu-Zr, and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys. These commercial alloys contain about 0.4 to 1.2 pct Cr, 0.10 to 0.25 pct Zr, and balance copper. Lead was selected as an element that should improve the machinability and possibly other characteristics of the alloy. WORK PROCEDURE This investigation began with a study of the effect of lead on the hardness, tensile strength, electrical conductivity, and machinability of the binary alloy containing 0.10 to 1.30 pct Cr and balance copper. This was followed by an investigation of the effect of lead on the Cu-0.1 to 0.4 pct Zr and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys. The alloys were made from initially oxygen-free copper and for comparison some castings were made from phosphorus-deoxidized Lake Copper. Commercially pure chromium, zirconium, and lead were used for alloying. In melting the chromium was added to molten copper at 1400°C (2550°F), the heat held for 15 min at temperature, and the temperature then lowered to 1350°C (2460°F) when the other elements were added. The alloys were held for 15 min at this temperature and cast into a cast-iron mold. One-kilogram, 3-in.-diam castings were made. An argon cover was maintained during melting and casting to prevent oxidation. The chemical compositions of the alloys are shown in Table I. The micro structure and properties of the alloys were studied in the cast and wrought conditions prior to and after various solution-annealing and heat-treating cycles. The relative machinability was determined as a function of the lead content and compared with the free-machining Cu-lpct Pb alloy. To determine the machinability, 13/16-in.-diam cast specimens were cut by a machine hack saw using a constant cutting speed of 50 fpm, a fixed feed force, and a new blade for each alloy specimen. Molybdenum highspeed steel saw blades, 0.032 in. thick with 14 teeth per in., were used in all tests. No cutting fluid was used. Five tests were made on each specimen and the average elapsed time per test was taken as a measure of the relative machinability for that alloy. The variation of cutting time for each alloy was less than 110 pct.

In a recent communication14 we have reported on the kinetics of the reactions of zirconium with O2, N2 and H2 as a function of the time, temperature and pressure variables. A systematic study was made and the results correlated with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions. This paper will present a similar study for titanium. Titanium and zirconium are members of the IV group of the periodic table and possess many similar physical and chemical properties as a result of their similar electronic configuration for the outer electrons. The two metals are relatively inert to both gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures the metals become active and react readily with the common gases including O2, N2 and H2 which are of interest in this study. A study of the kinetics of these gas-metal reactions is of interest for three reasons: (1) to understand the rate of reaction of titanium and its role in the behavior of high temperature alloys; (2) to understand the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of titanium; and (3) to correlate the data with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions and crystal structure predictions. Literature Survey Several review papers8 and books4243 exist on the preparation and properties of titanium and its alloys. THE METAL Titanium has, at room temperature, a hexagonal lattice of the zinc type. Hagg19 gives a value of 2.953A for the (a) axis, a value of 4.729 for the (c) axis and a density of 4.427 at 20°C. Burgers and Jacobs6 have observed the transformation of the hexagonal to the body-centered cubic structure at 880°C and have established a value of 3.31 for the cube edge and a density of 4.31. TITANIUM-OXYGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 using a pressure change method have studied the reaction at temperatures of 742° and 1000°C and for a pressure of one-fifth of an atmosphere. The probabilities for reaction are calculated from kinetic theory and they report a value of 10-5 for O2 at 1000°C and 10-6 at 740°C. The titanium-oxygen system has been investigated by Ehrlich.10,11 Five phases are observed. Between (TiO2 and TiO1.90) an alpha-phase, consisting ofarutile lattice, is found. A beta-phase is observed between (TiO1.80 and TiO1.70). A gamma-phase is homogeneous between (TiO1.56 and TiO1.46) and has a structure of the corundum type. The delta-phase exists between TiO1.25 and TiO0.6 and has a sodium chloride structure. From TiO0.42 to Ti the metal structure is observed. The surface oxide films have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen.20 The rutile structure is observed in the temperature range studied, 300 to 700°C. Three crystalline modifications of TiO2 exist: rutile and anatase which are tetragonal and brookite which has an orthorhombic structure. Anatase is reported36 to exist in two forms: I and II. Anatase II changes to anatase I at 642°C. Anatase I is stable up to 915°C where rutile becomes the stable modification. At 1300°C rutile transforms to brookite which melts at 1900°C. The monoxide, TiO, may be prepared from the dioxide by high temperature reduction with carbon or magnesium. Its melting point is 1750°C. TITANIUM-NITROGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 report that at 1000°C a linear rate law is observed. The probability of reaction is given as 10-8 at 1000°C. Fast12 has studied the solubility of nitrogen and its effect on the mechanical properties of the metal. The crystal structure of TiN has been shown by several workers2'21'44 to follow the sodium chloride structure. However, the calculated density is found to differ from the pycnometric value. This is studied by Brager3,4 in detail. He has suggested that the titanium sites in the lattice are only partially filled at low temperatures. As the temperature of preparation is raised the vacant sites become occupied which expands the lattice and increases the hardness and density. An (a) value of 4.22Å is given for room temperature. TITANIUM-HYDROGEN The solubility and the crystal structures observed in this system have been reviewed in a recent book by Smith.40

The year 1942 in Michigan was devoted largely to the development of fields discovered in 1941 but was also characterized by a great increase in prospecting for new productive horizons below the Dundee limestone. A south extension of the field developed during the year was in large part responsible for the increase. Approximately 9,000,000 bbl. of oil was produced from the field during the year, bringing the total accumulated production to the end of the year to roughly 11,750,000 barrels. Headquarters Field.—The Headquarters field, which started the year with ro producing oil wells, ended the year with 41 wells aid 1240 proven acres. Approximately 2,300,000 bbl. of oil was produced in 1942. Kawkawlin Field.—Although not a 1941 discovery, the Kawkawlin field has been actively developed on the 40-acre spacing plan during the last year, 42 producers having been completed, bringing the total number of wells at the end of the year to 77. My esteemed friend, President Smith, has requested me to do a bit of "reminiscing" as to the earlier years of my career as a mining engineer, which has now covered a period of fifty years. Let me reassure you by promising that my narrative will not include all the experiences I have had over that long period. You will, I trust, pardon what might seem egotistical but I do not see how a personal narrative could well be otherwise.

Experimental data are presented showing the influence of size consist and firing rate upon the performance of bituminous coal-fired, single-retort, industrial underfeed stokers. Size segregation, degradation, and distributor data are also included. The conclusion is reached that size consist of the fuel as fired, is a critical factor in its performance on this class of equipment.

It is well known that ferric oxide, Fe2O3, is paramagnetic, while magnetite, Fe3o4, is classed among the highly ferromagnetic substances. But magnetic data on oxides intermediate in composition between Fe2o3 and Fe3O4 have been almost completely lacking. Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 form a solid-solution series, according to present evidence.' In this series the properties change continuously from Fe2O3 toward Fe3O4, as the percentage of FeO increases from zero toward 31.03, which is the percentage in magnetite. It is possible that there is a break in the series near Fe3O4, but it has not yet been possible to establish the existence of such a break experimentally. The occurrence of solid solution in this series is shown by the dissociation pressure, or oxygen pressure in equilibrium with the oxides, which falls continuously over the range from Fe2O3 to Fe3O4. The oxygen-pressure curves at 1100" and 1200" are shown in Fig. 1. The existence of solid solution is also demonstrated by the continuous change in optical properties from Fe2O3 over to a composition containing about 18 per cent. FeO, at which point the opacity of the oxide becomes so great that it is impossible to obtain measurements at higher percentages of ferrous iron. Natural oxides of iron intermediate in composition between Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 are much more common than is generally supposed. If a mineral oxide is not strongly attracted by a small hand magnet and if it gives a red streak, it is usually labeled "hematite." If it is strongly attracted by the hand magnet it is usually labeled "magnetite" without further tests. As we shall show later, oxides containing from 1 up to 31 per cent. FeO can be thus erroneously lumped together as "magnetite." It is a fact, nevertheless, that the great bulk of natural oxides of iron lie fairly near either Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 in composition. To evaluate chemically the sample of rock obtained by diamond drilling, it has long been recognized that the analyses of the two components of the sample, core and sludge, must be given appropriate influence in computing the average analysis of any unit of depth. The purpose of this investigation is to set forth what means are available for apportioning the effect of core and sludge on the final analysis, what variables affect the problem, and what combination of applied mathematics will closest approximate the truth under each condition as these variables proceed within their limitations. A drill hole is bored in iron ore ex- ploration principally to test variations in rock composition with depth and is usually directed as nearly normal to the bedding of a horizon to be tested as possible. This practice has a tendency to minimize variation in composi- tion laterally which in any event is not likely to be great. It is obvious that the opportunity for change in analysis of a particular rock is not statistically as great radially in a diamond drill hole where the distance in which such a change may occur is from 0.719 in. (EX bit) to 1.469 in. (NX bit) as there would be longitudinally even in a run as short as 5 ft. Variations in composition of bedded or layered rocks are usually greater normal to the bedding than parallel thereto. Even in massive rocks, like porphyries, varia- tions are functions of distance. Hence, in either case, variations along the hole are of greater effect than across it.

Another increase in production and the discovery of new pools arc the outstanding developments of the year 1937. Production in 1937 totaled 16,354,706 bbl., compared to 15,457,953 bbl. in the previous year, an increase of 5.8 per cent, of which 5 per cent was due to the Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (Argentine Governnlent Oil Fields) and 0.8 per cent t,o private companies. Table I shows that the most important gain in output was obtained in zone B of Comodoro Rivadavia, partly offset by a 5.7 per cent decrease in the Neuqu6n district. The fields of Salta and Mendoza show an increase of 4.4 and 39.1 per cent, respectively.
