It is one of those papers that one wishes to read in the quiet of one's study, where it can be read with great profit. There are many points which he makes which I think are of very great value, in particular as to the importance of getting fine ;grained graphite by a relatively rapid cooling, combined with a high percentage of silicon. That theory would seem to be very promising; how far it has actually been carried out very likely Dr. Moldenke can. tell us.

THE patent literature of alloys for the last two decades or so indicates that the number of liatents referring to smaller and smaller percentages of essential alloying constituents is on the increase, whereas the number of patents relating to considerable percentages of alloying additions becomes smaller. The claims regarding physical properties indicate consistently higher and more rigid values and show the possibility of modifying the physical properties by only slight changes in the percentage of minor constituents or by applying different methods - of treatment. Alloys of the same base have been made suitable for a number of different applications by intelligently and rigid- ly controlling their composition, melting, casting, working, and heat-treatments. Other trends indicated in the development of modern alloys are higher corrosion resistance, higher fatigue limits, and "stability" in volume.

To improve technology for treating process water, US Bureau of Mines research has shown that magnesium oxide (MgO) has many advantages over lime or caustic soda for precipitating heavy metals. Sludge produced by MgO occupies only 0.2-0.3 times as much volume as the precipitate made wing a soluble base. While a settled, lime-formed precipitate is easily resuspended, the MgO-metal hydroxide sludge becomes cemented together on standing. Settling of the metal hydroxides from a dilute suspension is more complete than precipitates formed with other bases. Virtually any metal that can be precipitated by raising the pH can be treated using MgO. A three fold to fourfold stoichiometric excess of solid reagent is added. The mixture is reacted for five to 10 minutes. Polymer is added, and settling or filtration completes the process. Because of the greater cost of MgO compared with lime, large-scale practice of this technology will probably be limited to water containing 50 mg/L (3 gr per gal) or less of dissolved metals. For such dilute solutions, chemicals are not a large fraction of total treatment costs, so more desirable sludge properties might justify higher chemical expenses. While the MgO process is technically suitable for widespread application, the extent to which it is adopted will probably be determined by a trade-off between the greater cost of MgO compared with lime and the superior properties of the precipitates and their corresponding ultimate disposal costs.

An equilibrium study was made of the distribution of chromium and oxygen between liquid iron, containing less than 1 pct Cr, and simple slags of the CaO(MgO)-Si02-FeO-Cr& type in the temperature range 1526' to 1734OC. The effects of slag oxidation, temperature, and basicity were observed. IN spite of the fact that chromium is one of the most important alloying elements in steel, and exists in almost all steels as a significant residual element, little research has been done to determine its behavior in basic steelmaking processes. Considerably more work has been done under silica-saturated acid slag conditions. Korber and Oelsen,' Herasymenko,' and others have generally agreed that in acid steelmaking practice the chromium in the slag behaved as if it were present as the chrom-ous ion (CrO). Work by Hilty- ir, high chromium slags also indicated that chromium may exist as CrO. In basic slag systems no equilibrium data exist. Based on individual studies of basic open hearth and electric furnace practice, Bardenheuer," Rock-rohr,% nd HauckQ oncluded that: 1—chromium recovery increased with decreasing basicity, and 2— chromium recovery increased with increasing temperature, although the effect was small. In similar studies Yavioskii and Dzemyen' concluded that: 1— slag FeO is the most important variable, 2—the basicity of the slag has no effect on chromium recovery, and 3—slag viscosity is not high even when 20 pct Cr,O, is present. Lapitskii\ oncluded that chromium recovery improved as the basicity of the slag decreased and increased with increasing manganese in the metal. Regarding the effectiveness of CrZ08 as a base or acid in basic slags, both Kristofferseno and Trojer" reported that Cr,08 was an acidic component requiring neutralization as 2CaO-Cr,O,. Experimental Procedure The experimental apparatus and procedure used for the present research were similar in most details to those used by Winkler and Chipman" and were described in detail by them. A magnesia crucible was used, holding 60 to 80 lb of Armco iron which was decarburized with hydrogen to about 0.010 pct C. Since all the metal samples solidified without gas evolution, this carbon level was assumed not to be significant. Synthetic slags made by mixing pure oxides were used throughout the study. Temperatures were measured by means of calibrated W-Mo thermocouples and were checked by Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouples. The range of temperatures covered in this study was from 1526" to 1734°C. The chromium content of the iron was in the range 0.032 to 0.82 pct, although the bulk of the tests showed 0.04 to 0.2 pct. The slags were of the CaO(MgO)-SiO,-FeO-Cr,O, type in which the Cr,O, content was from about 2 to 20 pct, although most of the slags showed from about 2 to 10 pct. The FeO range was from about 10 to 65 pct. CaO and SiO, were in the range of about 5 to 45 pct each, yielding a rather wide range of basicity values. The first 12 heats were made without a sulphur addition, and with only 30 min allowed for slag-metal equilibrium to be reached. In previous research it had been shown that less than 30 min was adequate to achieve equilibrium in slags free of Cr2O8.11,14.15 A study of the present data indicated that some of the tests may not have reached equilibrium in this time; accordingly four additional heats were made in which at least 1 hr was permitted for equilibrium to be reached. Three aspects of magnetite smelting are discussed. The first is the working out of equilibrium conditions for eliminating sulfur. The second is the influence of magnetite solubility on the difficulty of tapping the reverb matte. The third is an approximation of the equilibrium conditions in the reverb gases which govern whether magnetite is mode or reduced in the reverb slag by these gases and by any iron sulfide in the slag. MAGNETITE has had a varied history in the Hurley Smelter since its start in 1939. Magnetite determinations on the smelter products are made regularly only on the monthly composite samples. Variations on the monthly averages are shown in Table I. Magnetite which drops from the slag and matte in the reverb has some slight bottom buildup which comes and goes, but no substantial accumulation from this source has been found at the end of a normal nine months' furnace campaign. However, there has been some low grade magnetite bearing material mixed with considerable A1,0,, which has slid down from the bottom of the sloping flue between the reverberatory furnace and the waste heat boilers. This accretion has required drilling and blasting near the skimming end of the furnace. The magnetite has interfered with tapping at times. When the smelter was first started, tapping trouble from magnetite was extremely severe. Increasing the reverberatory furnace temperature by putting in an air preheater and a Dutch oven has helped greatly, although there still is occasional tapping trouble. When the present series of physical chemistry articles on copper smelting started coming out in 1950, they were read with interest, but no immediate application was seen for them. Results of some laboratory work in 1952 aroused a much stronger interest in this physical chemistry. A series of melts was made on some converter slags, which had magnetite in very large grain sizes, with the object of reducing the grain sizes in the slag, as it was known that it was easier to handle in the reverb in that condition. Anything done in the tests greatly reduced the grain sizes—even in the controls, where nothing was done except melt the slag and cast it. There was more magnetite in the slags after the tests than before, and with wide variations. There were no obvious reasons lor much of what happened in these tests. Much of the base material published in English in this field was made available for study. Recalculations were made on many of the type problems, and part of the data was reduced to local temperatures and compositions. Explanations were found for what happened in the 1952 series of tests on converter slags, and the same principles turned out to be a description of much of what magnetite does in the reverb. This article is to present the results of that study, from the viewpoint of applying the technical material in definite numerical form to the operating conditions in both the converters and the reverberatory furnaces at the Hurley smelter. Within reasonable limits, the field conditions for formation or reduction can be predicted, and probably can be set up and maintained. Converter conditions affecting magnetite formation can be put into numerical values better than for the reverb from purely technical calculations. The converter can be operated so as to keep the magnetite in the slag down to between 12 and 14 pct and still give satisfactory life for the converter brick. This depends upon having converter flux available which will make a slag with a good separation without raising the temperature too high. In the Hurley reverb and others with similar conditions, it is likely that a compromise of conditions will give a reasonably good control of combustion and still keep the magnetite from building up on the bottom. This discussion consists of three main parts. The first is the working out of the equilibrium conditions in the converter for determining in which direction the reaction 3 Fe,,O, (s) + FeS (1) F? 10 FeO (1) + SO, will go under actual converter operating conditions. The second deals with the influence of the solubility of magnetite in the slag and matte in the reverb on the difficulty of tapping matte. Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary): I think very highly of the novel and ingenious device of Prof. Richards for analyzing the movement of the various elements of the jig; it is a method that certainly seems to promise valuable results, if we could only make certain that these various indicator-appliances have no effect upon the action of the jig. I would like, however, to suggest that in future experiments the connection between the plunger indicator-rod and the pencil should be made by means of parallel motions, so as better to reproduce the rectilinear motion of the piston. I should expect, if this were done, that the " curve " of the plunger in the Harz jig, at any rate, would be represented either by straight lines or else by quite regular curves, according to the method by which the plunger is set in motion; the apparent combinatioil of straight line and curve seems difficult to explain. With respect to the water-curve, I am afraid I am completely at fault, but no doubt Prof. Richards can explain my difficulty. Equilibrium relations in the system FeO-Fe2O3 Cr2O3 have been determined at 1300°C at oxygen pressures ranging from that of air (0.21 atm) to 1.5 x 10-11 atm. The following oxide phases have stable equilibrium existence under these conditions : a sesquioxide solid solution with corundum-type structure (approximate composition Fe2O3-Cr2O3); a ternary solid solution with spinel-type structure (approximate composition FeO Fe2O3-FeO Cr2O3) and a ternary wüstite solid solution with periclase-type structure and compositions approaching FeO. The metal phase occurring in equilibrium with oxide phase(s) at the lowest oxygen pressures used in the present investigation is almost pure iron. The extent of solid-solution areas and the location of oxygen isobars have been determined. ThE system Fe-Cr-O has attracted a great deal of interest among metallurgists as well as ceramists and geochemists. Metallurgists have studied the system because of its importance in deoxidation equilibria, ceramists because of its importance in basic brick technology, and geochemists because of its importance for an understanding of natural chromite deposits. Chen and chipman1 investigated the Cr-O equilibrium in liquid iron at 1595°C in atmospheres of known oxygen pressures (controlled H2O/H2 ratios). The main purpose of their work was to determine the stability range of the iron-chromite phase. Hilty et al.2 studied oxide phases in equilibrium with liquid Fe-Cr alloys at 1550°, 1600°, and 1650°C. They reported the existence of two previously unknown oxide phases, one a distorted spinel with composition intermediate between FeO Cr203 and Cr3O4, the other Cr3O4 with tetragonal structure. They also sketched diagrams showing the inferred liqui-dus surface and the inferred 1600°C isothermal section for the system Fe-Cr-O. Koch et al3 studied oxide inclusions in Fe-Cr alloys and also observed the distorted spinel phase reported by Hilty et al. Richards and white4 as well as Woodhouse and White5 investigated spinel-sesquioxide equilibria in the system Fe-Cr-O in air in the temperature range of 1420" to 1650°C, and Muan and Somiya6 delineated approximate phase relations in the system in air from 1400" to 2050°C. The present study was carried out at a constant temperature of 1300° C and at oxygen pressures ranging from 0.21 atm (air) to 1.5 x 10-11 atm. The chosen temperature is high enough to permit equilibrium to be attained within a reasonable period of time within most composition areas of the system, and still low enough to permit use of experimental methods which give highly accurate and reliable results. These methods are described in detail in the following. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS 1) General Procedures. Two different experimental methods were used in the present investigation: quenching and thermogravimetry. In the quenching method, oxide samples were heated at chosen temperature and chosen oxygen pressure until equilibrium was attained among gas and condensed phases. The samples were then quenched rapidly to room temperature and the phases present determined by X-ray and microscopic examination. Total compositions were determined by chemical analysis after quenching. In the thermogravimetric method, pellets of oxide mixtures were suspended by a thin platinum wire from one beam of an analytical balance, and the weight changes were recorded as a function of oxygen pressure at constant temperature. The data thus obtained were used to locate oxygen isobars. The courses of the latter curves reflect changes in phase assemblages and serve to supplement the observations made by the quenching technique. 2) Materials. Analytical-grade Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 were used as starting materials. Each oxide was first heated separately in air at 1000°C for several hours. Mixtures of desired ratios of the two oxides were then prepared. Each mixture was finely ground and mixed, and heated at 1250" to 1300°C in air for 2 hr, ground and mixed again and heated at the same temperature for 5 to 24 hr, depending on the Cr2O3 content of the mixture. A homogeneous sesquioxide solid solution between the two end members resulted from this treatment. A consideration of exploration techniques leads to an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of geo- physics as a tool for mining exploration. One means of evaluation will be to compare the use of geophysics in petroleum exploration with its possible uses in mining.

A new tankhouse was started in January 1959 at the Copper Refinery of the Boliden Co., Skelleftehamn, Sweden. In early 1961 a semiautomatic machine for looping and straightening of starting sheets was introduced to substitute previous manual operations. The machine as well as consequent, racking and handling is described. Finally, economic benefits achieved and new constructions for the future are discussed. HISTORY Tankhouse operations at the Boliden Co. 's Smelter in Skelleftehamn started in 1932 on a scale that since then has been gradually increasing. In order to rationalize the operations, a new tankhouse was erected. It went into production in January 1959 and was designed for a yearly production of 35,000 metric tons at a current density of 16 amps per sq ft. Already from the beginning, however, the tankhouse has been run with a current density of 21.5 amps per sq ft, corresponding to a maximum capacity of 50,000 tons a year. During the time of planning of the new tankhouse, due consideration was given to the possibilities of mechanizing the operations. New ideas could be and were actually tested on full or pilot plant scale in the old tankhouse. In that way we developed a system for the cathode handling including washing, weighing, and transportation. A system using forklift trucks in combination with trailers and overhead cranes has been developed for transportation and racking of anodes and also for handling of anode scrap. With respect to the electrolyte, circulation and temperature control are partly automatic. Special attention was paid to the production of starting sheets, which operation normally requires a great number of man hours, and it was made the object of a particular survey as to the best ways of straightening starting sheets, attaching loops to the sheets, and so forth. As a result, a machine was designed during 1957-58 and built in our own shops. After a period of tests, the new equipment was put in operation commercially on the 10th of April, 1961. Since this date the machine has produced about 2 million starting sheets without interruption and has been the only source of looped starting sheets for the tankhouse. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 shows all the major parts of the system. These parts are: slitting machine with feeding table (I), standard roller leveler, type Ungerer (2), tilting roller table (3), conveyors for sheets and suspension bars (4, 7), storage of suspension bars (51, punching and stitching machine (6), two lift-turn-tilt tables (8) for discharging the starting sheets, two rack conveyors (9) for sheet assemblies. Included are a hy-daulic pump station and panels for pneumatic and electric controls. SLITTING AND STRAIGHTENING The machine is fed by hand by a man sitting in front of the slitting-machine table, Fig. 2. This operator inserts one sheet at a time into the slitter. After being trimmed, the sheet is automatically conveyed to the following step of handling, straightening. The slitting machine cuts away about 8 mm of the upper and lower parts of the sheet (in relation to its original position in the stripper section) for two reasons. The first one is to give the machine sheets of uniform dimensions; the second one is a matter of quality. Normally the starting sheets as stripped have a thick edge at the bottom end. This part would collect anode slimes and might also cause short circuits when inserted in the cells without trimming. The straightener used is of German construction

This stove has been designed to meet the requirements of a fur nave that must be operated with either a reducing or a neutral flame ; and more particularly to make feasible the operating of re duction-furnaces with the cheaper grades of gas-fuel, which has heretofore been impracticable. In general, cheap gas-fuels result from incomplete combustion, and, being suited for further combustion, answer very well for heat ing purposes; and high temperatures may be attained with them, when they are used in conjunction with regenerative stoves. But, in operating a reduction-furnace, a high temperature is not the only requirement. It is also necessary that the fuel shall not be cansumed beyond a certain degree, in order to insure a re ducing flame for the reduction-process ; consequently, it becomes necessary to dispense with combustion as much as possible previous to the use of the fuel-gases in the reduction-furnace. Moreover, these gases must be preheated to a high degree, in order that a sufficient temperature may be maintained in the furnace; and, since this preheating cannot be accomplished by a previous, partial combustion of the gases themselves, it follows that the stoves for pre heating these gases should be heated to as high degree as it is pos sible to attain with an inferior fuel. This result can best be accom plished by complete combustion of the heating gases, and is further facilitated by preheating all of the air and gas used for this com plete combustion. It is more particularly desirable to preheat the air, since the combustible gases used may generally be obtained directly from the furnace, or gas-producer. The reducing gases, escaping from a gas-fuel reduction-furnace, are capable of considerable further dilution with air to secure com plete combustion, and consequently may be utilized for heating the stove to a high temperature, provided the air be sufficiently preheated.

DURING the past year, as in the preceding ones, prices continued to fall, production to decrease, and more mines were closed. Much attention is being given by the industry to suggested plans for betterment of its position, and if the scheme recently brought out for consolidation of sales agencies into district agencies is loyally carried out, it cannot but help to improve conditions. The progress in the anthracite industry is shown in the report of its chairman, E. H. Suender; changes in coal preparation are outlined in the report of J. B. Morrow, chairman of Committee on Coal Preparation, while increased mechanization of the western mines is described by Eugene McAuliffe, chairman of the Committee on Machine and Strip Mining. In spite of the depression, interest in the Coal Division has been increasing, its meetings have been well attended, and its committees are active and have been doing excellent work.

PROGRESS in the petroleum industry in 1929 has been characterized by outstanding accomplishments in the fields of new discovery of supply, economic control of production, increased efficiency and reduced costs of recovery, and lowered costs and greater flexibility in manufacture. Resources have been developed in an outstanding degree in the Kettleman Hills. California, the Oklahoma City field (which adds a large potential area in central Oklahoma), the discovery of Woodbine sand production in East Texas, and the discovery of Wilcox sand production in west-central Kansas. Engineering technique has progressed both along the lines of development and production, with a net result that costs have been reduced and extraction increased in notable degree, although it is impossible to give a close measure of either. In the field of re- fining crude oils variations to the end of promoting reduced cost and greater flexibility has been more important than genera! acceptance of innovations in practice.

International developments affecting foreign in- vestments in 1960-61 were many, varying from region to region and differing with respect to various categories of investments. Total value of U.S. private investment abroad in 1960 was approximately $32.7 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over 1959. Production and distribution of mineral resources was, by a sizeable margin, the most important function of American capital working in foreign countries in 1960. Investment in mining or petroleum interests totaled approximately $14 billion, or 42% of all direct foreign investment. In- vestments by industry for 1960 were as follows: Petroleum-10.9 billions, Mining-3.0 billions, Manufacturing-11.2 billions, Utilities-2.5 billions, other-5.1 billions. American investors found Canada and Latin America to be most desirable in 1960 with the greatest percentage of American capital in all areas centered in the petroleum and mining industries. The areal breakdown of total American investments is as follows: Canada-$11.2 billions, Latin America-$8.4 billions, Western Europe-$6.6 billions, Middle East-$1.2 billions, Far East-$1.2 billions, Africa-$.9 billions, other areas-$3.2 billions.

FABRICATORS of copper and copper alloys have contended with the problems of reconversion during the past year in endeavoring to return to the full-scale production that is demanded of them. The problems have not been easy, for the industry, like so many others, has had to deal with strikes of long duration, and material shortages, particularly in the raw materials, copper, zinc, lead, and tin. Despite all these obstacles, it was possible to gear production to new peacetime records during the latter part of the year. This was made possible not only by the use of multiple shifts of personnel, but also by the improved production equipment, the development of which had been stimulated by wartime necessity. The work of installing new and better equipment is still continuing, and virtually every company is engaged in improving or planning to improve its processes.

BASIC mineral commodities may be divided into two general classifications in their market or price characteristics. In one class are commodities sold on a world-wide basis, as gold, silver, nickel, asbestos and petroleum, and in the second are those produced and sold locally. Of course, no precise line of demarcation exists between the two; coal, for instance, belongs more or less in both. If there are enough producers of any commodity to prevent control of production by any one person or group, a free market then exists and the price in a buyer's market is determined by the most favored producer-meaning the producer, with the lowest production cost or the lowest cost of transportation, or both, to the particular market, or place of use. With minerals in the first classification, their high intrinsic value far outweighs the transportation cost and a uniform market price is accepted as an essential element in the economy of distribution. But with common minerals of small. intrinsic value and relatively high transportation costs, economists are reluctant to admit that a uniform price may also be an essential element in distribution.

Various X ray diffraction techniques have been developed for determining orientations of crystals. Transmission and back-reflection Laue methods1,2,3 in particular have been found to be very useful. In many applications, however, a need still exists for a simplification of the details of analysis so that orientations can be determined more rapidly, and operators with little or no training in crystallography can be easily instructed in the necessary procedures. Filling this need in part is a system of analysis that has been in use for several years in the Metals Section of the Laboratory, General Electric Co., Pittsfield, Mass. This method is an extension of the one of Majima and Togino,4 which uses fifty-five indexed standard transmission Lauemams to cover the entire range of crystal orientations. Greater rapidity in determining the orientation of a crystal is achieved by using a slightly larger set of standard Lauegrams and by systematizing the steps followed. This system of analysis in its present form constitutes the subject matter of the present paper. Although the method uses transmission X ray Laue patterns, many of the operations are applicable to the analysis of back-reflection Lauegrams. Very briefly the method is based on the fact that Bragg and azimuthal angles for two or more identified Laue diffraction spots completely determine the orientation of a crystal, and standard Laue photographs of the Majima and Togino type provide a ready means for identifying Laue spots. After a preliminary analysis, which consists of identifying the pattern in terms of one of the standard patterns, a correctly marked Lauegram is selected to carry out the final analysis. From measured Bragg and azimuthal angles, the normals (poles) of the reflecting planes for the selected Laue spots are located on a stereographic projection and the orient.at.ion of the crystal determined (in terms of the positions of cube poles for example) by a few additional operations on a \I1ulff net. The actual procedure followed will be illustrated in detail after a brief treatment or X ray problems connected with orientation determinations and a discussion of useful principles and techniques. X Ray and Plotting Problems RELATIVE ADVANTAGES OF BACK-REFLECTION AND TRANSMISSION LAUE DIFFRACTION METHODS In the back-reflection Laue method it is easy to make a direct measurement of the tilt of a zone of Laue spots. Specimen thickness also is generally no problem. In the case of thin specimens, however, the time of exposure is less for the transmission Laue method. For example, with silicon ferrite this advantage holds up to a thickness of 0.6 mm if tungsten radiation at 40 kv peak voltage is used. Furthermore, the transmission photograph represents the entire thickness of the crystal whereas the back-reflection picture represents only a surface layer (a thickness of less than 0.05 mm for silicon ferrite), the deeper layers supplying a negligible amount to the diffraction pattern. If a crystal is distorted, the transmission Laue pattern gives more information particularly with regard to the orientation of the crystal and the overall amount of spread in orientation. Finally a 3 1/4 X 4 in. film suffices for transmission photograms; a 4 X 5 in. or 5 X 7 in. film with a central hole is needed for back-reflection patterns Not only is the manipulation of film easier because of the size of film, but

FREE competition, long the controlling ideal of domestic trade within the United States, has had the fundamental geographical advantage of functioning in the world's largest area of unrestricted commerce. Goods moved back and forth across state lines, unimpeded by customs, and industrial operations have developed rapidly to meet the expanding needs of a pioneer country richly endowed with natural resources. Fifty years ago, antitrust laws were adopted to protect the competitive private enterprise principle. It became illegal for one person to combine with another to restrain trade or commerce among the several states or with foreign nations. The original legislative measures defining this philosophy were the Sherman Act of 1890 and the Clay- ton Act passed in 1914. The development of Europe and other parts of the world was influenced by different conditions which led to a different theory of trade. Here were many small nations, with limited natural resources and a thin market, and they attempted to protect their national economy by tariff walls. International business arrangements for the purpose of diminishing the ups and downs of the more competitive system --crux of the modern cartel operations-seemed a logical device to stabilize production and guard the interests of both workers and consumers. European governments as well as European industrial interests became convinced that if com- petition could be held in bounds the danger of business depressions and un- employment could be reduced.

A SURVEY of the Mesabi Range iron-ore industry demonstrates that a satisfactory degree of technical progress has been achieved in the last fifteen years. This advance has not been made over a uniform front, but, by salients and bays, according to the different initial positions, economic and technical, of the component producing companies. The producers endowed with rich ore have in general, because of natural advantages, progressed more slowly than their neighbors with leaner properties. The advance has been made step by step all along the line -blasting, loading, hauling and concentrating-and without the benefit of radical innovation. There have been, for instance, no such parallel discoveries in iron ore as leaching and flotation in copper. The much lower unit price of iron operates, of course, to bar the application of these and other practices developed for the higher-priced metals. There exists, however, a radically new concentration process whose technology is well worked out and which may become economically operative in the not too distant future; this, as so often happens in engineering advance, because of recent developments in an entirely unrelated field. First, however, let me devote a paragraph or two to the more important economies effected in mining.
