The Bureau of Mines devised a direct flotation method for treating low-grade carnallite (KCl*MgC12*6H20) and sylvinite (a mixture of KC1 and NaCl) ores characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The procedure consists of flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes; decomposition leach (carnallite only); potash rougher, cleaner, and recleaner flotation; and final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity of removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation desliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumptions. The direct flotation method recovered 81.6% of the solid phase KC1 from camallite ore and 79.7% of the KCl from sylvinite ore in final products containing 60.5 and 60.9% K2O, respectively. A flowsheet incorporating the described flotation procedure is presented.

When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese: they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way: there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution arrived.

INTRODUCTION The slope stability research plan at Kennecott was developed to serve the specific needs of large, open pit mines; primarily those developed in faulted and highly-fractured intrusive deposits. The program emphasis is on applied research; being defined in this case as research into the engineering mechanics of discontinuous rock and into the related rock property survey and slope design techniques. The program has been developed in phases, with each phase organized to explore more thoroughly the most significant findings of previous work and to improve on techniques found to be applicable. The current work is based on principles developed early in the program and that show promise of having engineering and economic value. A brief summary of the conceptual principles of the program is given to put our current work in context. This is followed by a review of the two cooperative programs done with the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Most recent work is described and interpreted in terms of practical slope design. Although failure-free slopes are a desirable goal, it is recognized that some failures will occur when overall slope designs approach a calculated safety factor of one. A discussion of failure control research is therefore offered. BACKGROUND In 1965 Kennecott management specified that a slope stability technology must be used to achieve optimum development of ore resources. The subject was carefully explored and by 1960 it had been established that there was no technology readily applicable to open pit slope design. Therefore, in 1962, Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines agreed upon a cooperative research program having the objective of developing a mine slope stability science. One of the first decisions made by the cooperating groups was that the research must be conducted primarily in the field and not in the unrealistic environments of a laboratory. Accordingly, the Kimbley Pit, an abandoned mine once operated by Kennecott's Nevada Mines Division in Nevada, was selected for the full-scale research. Fortunately, there was near-universal agreement on the basic stability parameters and thus on the areas to be investigated. These parameters were acknowledged to be: (1) anisotropy (generally due to faults or joints), (2) stress, and (3) water; in that order of importance.

Tensile tests on aluminum single crystals, grown from the melt, revealed that the yield stress of these crystals was raised as the amount of striation substructure was increased. The number of striation-type boundaries was varied by changing the rate of growth of the crystals. The results are interpreted in terns of a blockage of dislocation movement by striation boundaries. IMPERFECTIONS are known to have a large effect on the mechanical properties of metals. Teghtsoonian and Chalmers 1 studied a block or striation-type substructure in tin and found that the formation of the striations depended upon rate of crystal growth and orientation. They found that the angular misorienta-tion between neighboring striations varied between 15 min and 5 deg. Atwater and chalmers2 investigated striations in tin and lead, and found that purity was another factor which influenced their formation. There was a limiting purity above which the striations were straight and regular. There is little information in the literature concerning how substructures in melt-grown crystals affect strength. washburn3 introduced small-angle boundaries into zinc by a shear process and found a subsequent increase in yield stress which he attributed to the presence of these boundaries. Lauriente and pond4 found the critical resolved shear stress in aluminium crystals grown from the melt, to increase with etch pit density. The etch pits were used as an indication of growth imperfections. In Hibbard's5 work on lineage structure in copper crystals grown from the melt, he tested one crystal containing interlineage boundaries, and found a 50 pct increase in the critical resolved shear stress. Fleischer and Chalmers6, in a recent paper, mention briefly that, in the production of aluminium crystals from the melt when the growth rate was raised from 1.2 to 18 cm per hr, the yield stress increased 50 pct. They felt that the increase in yield stress with rate of growth might be attributed to a higher concentration of impurities in the gage length and also might be affected by the increased number of small-angle boundaries (striations). The present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of the striation substructure on the strength of aluminum single crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum single crystals of 99.9992 purity were grown from the melt using a technique described by Chalmers.7 The growth rate was varied from 0.6 to 20 mm per min, thus producing crystals with varying numbers of striation boundaries. To avoid prior deformation, the crystals were chemically cut to the desired length with a saturated solution of cupric chloride. They were then annealed at 580°C for 24 hr and allowed to cool slowly in the furnace. Finally, the specimens were electropolished using an electrolyte of 5 parts ethyl alcohol and 1 part perchloric acid. Each specimen was approximately 5 in. in length and 0.125 sq in. in cross section. The average orientations of the 5 series of crystals studied are shown on the stereographic projection of Fig. 1. The crystals were strained approximately 2 pct in a soft tensile machine. The strain sensitivity was 3.6 x 10-4 cm over a 5-cm gage length.

When a mixture of chalcopyrite concentrate and lime is heated in air, the following reaction takes place: 2CuFeS2 + 4Ca (OH)2 + 8 ½ 02 ; 2Cu0 + Fe203 + 4CaS04 + 4H20. Ca (OH)2 is the only common reagent that will adequately control SO2 evolution in roasting. Other additives tried, including CaO, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaOH, MgO, Mg (OH)2, and MgCO3, were not effective. All reacted with sulfur, but not to the extent that will be required to meet the new control regulations for sulfur oxide emissions. For example: when the concentrate was heated with the theoretical amount of limestone (CaCO3), about 55% of the sulfur was retained in the calcine; whereas use of the stoichiometric amount of Ca (OH), converted approximately 99% of the sulfur to CaSO1. In most of the experiments, Ca(OH)2 was formed by adding CaO to concentrates containing enough water to simulate filter cake from flotation circuit. This eliminated the need for drying the concentrate and utilized the heat of hydration of CaO.

In defending the chemical theory of flotation, Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl have criticized1 the views of those who prefer to attribute the effects of certain flotation agents to adsorption. Perhaps with some justification, they describe the latter term as the "haven of refuge of writers lost in a morass of shaky experiment and muddy thinking." We prefer to regard it, however, as a haven of refuge for writers who seek a conventional term to describe the formation of films of flotation reagents on solid surfaces, because in many cases it is not yet possible to specify the forces that hold them there. Originally, as Taggart and his associates state, adsorption connoted a concentration difference and nothing more. In recent years, workers in the field of surface chemistry have tacitly added other meanings, and they now speak of orientated adsorption of unimolecular films on a solid sub-strate, of chemi-adsorption, and of exchange adsorption. Thus the term adsorption may connote simply the Gibbs layer of excess concentration at the surface of a solution, or a unimolecular film at the surface of a solid. Perhaps this has led to the misunderstanding of Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl concerning the relationship between surface tension and adsorption at solid surfaces. The change in "surface tension" accompanying adsorption at a liquid surface can be used as a measure of the adsorption, and the Gibbs equation as quoted by these authors correlates these two conceptions. But, to correlate two conceptions docs not necessarily imply an attempt to explain either, although sometimes such an "explanation" is carelessly inferred. Use of "surface energy per unit area" instead of the numerically equal but more difficult and less definite conception of "surface tension per unit length " would lessen many of the present difficulties. (Compare with Adam.2) At interfaces involving a solid phase, neither '" surface tension " nor " interfacial tension "can have any meaning, but the conception "interfacial energy per unit area" call be understood by anyone who is familiar with the concept of free energy. By utilizing an 8,000-ft experimental field well equipped with 10 gas-lift valves and 10 Maihak pressure recorders, gas-lift tests were conducted with port sizes ranging from 5/16 through I in. The well was equipped to provide accurate means of measuring surface pressures, temperatures, quantity of injection gas and fluid production. The tests were conducted in 2%-in. OD tubing, and the well was making 95 per cent water. A complete evaluation of gas-lift-valve port sizes shows the relationship of per cent recovery, gas-liquid ratios, minimum pressure created at the operating valve and horsepower requirements for each port. The length of time necessary for the fluid in the tubing to reach equilib.rium conditions after each cycle was recorded. Fallback of fluid at depths of 477, 969, 1,685, 2,493 and 4,290 ft was noted. For each port size, pressure loads of 2.50, 300, 350, 400 and 450 psi were lifted with a valve operating at approximately 550 psi at 6,000 ft. Gas-liquid ratios for each load were varied from excess gas to a gas volume per cycle whereby the load failed to reach the surface. Numerous curves are presented in evaluating the accumulated dara. The results show a 1-in. port to be the most efficient under all conditions. The production of intermittent liquid slugs against different-sized surface chokes was evaluated. These tests were conducted from a 7/16-in. ported valve at 4,072 ft. Tests indicate that, when possible, a %-in. in diameter choke or larger should be used at the surface. In the past few years most of the advancement in gas-lift operations has been made in continuous-flow operations. Yet, it is estimated that at least 70 per cent of the wells on gas lift in the United States are of the intermittent type. Since the term "slug flow" is sometimes used in both intermittent- and continuous-flow operations, it would be well to distinguish between the two types of flow. Continuous-flow gas lift is defined as a method whereby the fluids are produced at a continuous rate at the surface. This generally requires a continuous injection of gas through a surface choke; however, various other control devices sometimes are installed to eliminate freezing, to shut-off gas during natural flow periods, etc. The actual flow of fluids in the tubing may be of the slug type (one of many flow patterns known to exist in continuous flow). Intermittent flow is defined as a method of gas lift whereby the liquid is produced in separate piston-type slugs. Perhaps this type of flow could best be thought of as a ballistic-type flow where the liquid leaves bottom as a piston, propelled by a slug of expanding gas. Gas generally is injected through some type of control at the surface at predetermined intervals. However, the valve may have characteristics whereby gas can be injected through a small choke and still result in a ballistic-type flow. The purpose of the experimental work was to evaluate the most efficient port size to be used on the operating valve for the ballistic type of lift and, in addition, to establish the importance of utilizing a surface choke large enough to allow slugs to be produced without detrimental effects. This work is part of a compre- hensive study of both intermittent-and continuous-flow gas lift, representing a joint project conducted by the Ohio Oil Co., the Sun Oil Co., Otis Engineering Corp, and The U. of Texas. The problem of evaluating port sizes has been given little previous attention. Some work undoubtedly has been done which has not been published to date. Some tests were conducted when the wireline, mechanically-opened valve (Nixon) first came on the market. This valve was capable of utilizing full tubing area as its port size. It is known that this was a very efficient valve, but to the authors' knowledge the results of tests have never been published. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT These tests were conducted on an actual field well, the Ohio-Sun Unit Well No. 2-E, in the North Markham-North Bay City field, Matagorda County, Tex. The well incorporated 23/8-in. OD tubing and produced 95 per cent water. Since the running of equipment was to be quite elaborate and expensive, a well was selected in which both intermittent- and continuous-flow tests could be conducted. This particular well was capable of producing in excess of 1,000 B/D of liquid (95 per cent salt water), yet with a 3/64-in. in diameter bottom-hole choke, production was controlled to 82 B/D. Most of the intermittent tests were conducted at this low rate. Figs. 1 and 2 show all the surface and down-hole equipment. As can be seen, every attempt was made to insure that ample equipment was available for reliable testing procedures. Fig. 1 shows the surface testing equipment. My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the 'quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

IN October last, I was call upon to examine a copper deposit in the South Mountain, near the Pennsylvania and Maryland boundary. The specimens shown me contained oxides and carbonates with native copper, and were similar to some that had been described to me some years ago as existing at the Luray Gap in Virginia. An examination of Rogers's Report on the Geology of Pennsylvania, led me to expect to see his so-called "Primal Formation," such as exists throughout the southeastern district of the State. I was therefore much surprised on arriving at the summit of the Western Maryland Railroad to find myself on familiar ground. Instead of the "Primal" as I had known it in Southeastern Pennsylvania, I soon decided that the rocks were identical with the "Lake Superior Copper Formation." My visit was unfortunately a short one, part of two days, and in that time I had to pass over a good many miles, but I saw sufficient to convince me that instead of the Lake Superior Copper Formation being a local geological feature, it would have to be considered as a widely extended series of rocks. I was unable to even approximately estimate the thickness either of the trap zone or other members, schists and slates, of the series. In an article on the Copper Range of Michigan, prepared by C. P. Williams and myself in 1862, and published, in vol. xxxiv of the American Journal of Arts and Sciences, we endeavored to divide that range into zones, according to the character of the traps. The limited nature of the explorations at that time made this work very imperfect. Subsequent explorations have confirmed my notes then

FOR the third consecutive year, I have collected the data on enrolment and employment of graduates from the schools in. the United States and Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected in the same way as formerly; namely, by questionnaire, dated Jan. 5, 1935, and are therefore comparable with the figures reported for former years. This year, along with the names of the 48 schools in the United States and the six in Canada, are listed the courses offered and the degrees granted by each, school, together with the names of the professors in charge. The names and addresses of the four schools in Mexico are also given. The list is on pages 450-1, which should he valued as a directory by those interested in mineral technology education. So far as is known, this is the most complete and up-to-date list that has ever been published.

I. INTRODUCTION. LIME-ROASTING is a term proposed by Ingalls 1 for the operation of forcing air under pressure through a mixture of galena and lime at the kindling-temperature with the object of oxidizing lead and sulphur and of fritting or fusing the charge. If, finely-divided galena were treated in this manner without the addition of lime, the heat set free by the oxidation of part of the lead and the sulphur would be sufficiently great to fuse undecomposed sulphide, and thus stop desulphurization. Besides the chemical action that the addition of lime, limestone or gypsum to the charge may have, the admixture has the physical effect that it keeps the particles of galena separated from one another and accessible to the oxidizing effect of the air. At present, three methods of lime-roasting are carried out on a working-scale, the Huntington-Heberlein, the Carmichael-Bradford and the Savelsberg2 processes. In the last, which interests us here, an 8-ton charge is made up of galena, limestone and perhaps some siliceous or ferruginous flux; the whole is crushed to pass a screen with 3-mm. holes and moistened with 5 per cent of water. It is fed gradually into a bowl-shaped converter, 6.56 ft. in diameter, supported by trunnions attached to a truck. On the .bottom the converter has a grate with blast-inlet beneath. RAW bituminous coal has been in general use as a blast-furnace fuel in Scotland for the last century, and although its use has now been largely abandoned and it has been replaced by coke in the majority of the few furnaces which are at, present in blast in this country, coal-smelted pig iron is not yet a thing of the past; it is still being produced and mar-keted in competition with the more cheaply smelted product of the coke-fired furnace. Various factors have influenced this change in practice; the once plentiful deposits of coal of a suitable nature for the blast furnace are now not so easily obtainable; native blackband and clayband ironstones which are easily smelted in the coal-fired blast furnace, although still far from being exhausted, are not available except at a. cost that is somewhat higher than that of imported ores, making them unattractive to the ironmaster that is compelled by circumstances to smelt his iron at the lowest possible cost. Within the last 15 years overproduction of synthetic nitrogen has led to progressive reductions in the price of sulphate of ammonia, the recovery of which together with the other by-products before that time materially assisted in reducing the working costs of the coal-fired furnace. Now the sale of the by-products recovered yields a diminished profit. When the cost of the product is the only consideration the small, slow-smelting, coal-fired blast furnace cannot compare with its large, modern, coke-fired competitor. Other `considerations do not by any means all support the same side of the argument. In the smelting of pig iron to be used in the manufacture of steel where the quality of the final product depends so largely upon the control of the conversion process and so much less upon the physical quality of the pig iron used, the physical properties of the pig iron do not exert any appreciable influence upon the quality of the steel produced, therefore the methods employed in the smelting of the pig iron matter but little so long as the requisite chemical composi-tion is reached. On the other hand, in ironfounding where the simple melting of the pig iron, which is the only treatment it receives before being cast into its final form, does little or nothing to modify its original charac-

MATERIAL used throughout this investigation was high-purity aluminum (99.998 pct). The 1/2-in. cubes were cut out of a cold-rolled slab and annealed at 550°C for 1 hr before deformation. The single crystal specimen was 1 in. in diam x 0.33 in. thick, cut from a cylindrical crystal produced by cooling at about 55°C per hr in a furnace which had a convenient gradient of about 10°C in every 4.5 in. vertical crucible length. Specific data on the ten specimens studied are summarized in table I. Three types of deformation were employed: (I) compression in a hand-operated hydraulic press; (2) impact with a 7-lb sledge hammer; and (3) rolling, using a wedge-shaped specimen' to obtain a gradient of deformations varying from 0 to 50 pct along the length of the wedge. Specimens were either deformed at room temperature, or first cooled in a freezing mixture of dry ice and ether at a temperature of —72°C and then deformed between steel blocks cooled with dry ice. The specimens deformed at the low temperature were ground and polished through 000 emery paper and wheels impregnated with alundum and alumina No. 1. During this entire procedure the specimens were dipped frequently in the freezing mixture of dry ice and ether in order to maintain constantly a frosty surface as insurance against overheating. All specimens were given a final electrolytic polish, using two different electrolytes* to insure that the surface effects observed were not char- acteristic of the polishing technique. With both electrolytes, the annealed specimens gave even surfaces with good polish. Several standard etchants were tried without success. The best results were obtained with an immersion etchant, developed in this connection, containing: hydrofluoric acid, 4 parts; nitric acid, 1 part; glycerine, 3 parts. Discussion of Results Typical strain markings have been observed within deformation bands, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 4. By stereographic plotting of metallographic measurements, the strain markings within a deformation band in a single crystal of aluminum deformed by compression were found to be traces of (111) planes within a maximum scatter of 6". The edges of the deformation band were found to be traces of the (100) planes also within the maximum scatter of 6" (in agreement with previous workers). At 30 pct deformation, this scatter was considered quite normal because of the fragmentation and rotation of the crystal. This solution, based on the traces on one plane of observation is not unique, but as the planes were observed to be those normally and logically to be expected, further work in this regard was not felt to be necessary. The study of strain markings in a wedge-shaped specimen, rolled to obtain a gradient of deformation from 0 to 50 pct, revealed prominent strain markings at 25 pct reduction in thickness (fig.5). Faint and weak strain markings were visually observable up to a minimum reduction in thickness of about 12 pct. Since strain markings have been observed in other face-centered cubic metals after much smaller deformations;1, 2 and since the rate of recovery in aluminum is high, it is believed that, at lower deformations, self-recovery removes the localized strains at the slip interfaces, thus removing the source of the etching effects that give rise to strain markings. The equilibrium of gaseous H20-H2 mixtures with liquid iron-columbium alloys in the range 0.2 to 2.4 pct Cb shows that the activity coefficient of oxygen is strongly diminished by Cb. The oxide in equilibvium with the melt is identified as CbO2. The equi-librium constant at 1600 deg C is [%Cb][fo. % 0]2 = 2.9 x 10-4 where log fo= —0.14 [%Cb]. The deoxidizing power is comparable to that of vanadium, COLUMBIUM (niobium) is finding increasing use as an alloying element in steel. It forms several stable oxides and is removed from the steel bath by oxidizing slags. The specific oxide formed in steel-making is not known although Sazanov snd Shvarts-man,' in their study of its partition between slag and metal, have assumed this to be Cb2O5 It is the purpose of this study to determine its deoxidation equilibrium at 1600°c, the nature of the oxide formed and the interaction between columbium and oxygen in the melt. The investigation was based on the reaction H2 + O=H2O; Kl=ph2o/(pH2[%O]) [1] in which 0 signifies oxygen dissolved in the liquid Fe-Cb alloy. The method and equipment of recent studies2,3 were utilized. In brief, the molten alloy, contained in a small crucible, is held in a controlled mixture of steam, hydrogen, and argon until equilibrium is reached. It is then cooled quickly in a stream of helium and analyzed for columbium and oxygen, the latter by vacuum fusion.4 The solubility of the oxide in liquid iron is determined by visual observation of scum formation on the surface of the melt. Crucibles of MgO proved unsatisfactory because of partial reduction at the metal interface. Pure A12O3 crucibles were heavily blackened by the melt and could not be used at high concentrations of columbium. Silica crucibles were more satisfactory but these introduced some silicon into the melt thus necessitating an uncertain but small correction for its effect on the activities of the other solutes. In silica it was possible to observe the scum formation when the melt became saturated and there was no apparent reaction between scum and crucible. The procedure for saturated melts was as follows. The alloy charge composed of electrolytic iron and columbium grain was melted and held at constant temperature. The gas ratio H2O:H2 was progressively increased by raising the saturator temperature until a point was reached at which a bright film appeared on the surface and covered it completely. This film could be dissolved by raising the temperature of the melt and it reappeared when the temperature was lowered. Under a partial film covering, utilizing bare areas for temperature measurement, the melt was brought to equilibrium with the atmosphere by holding at temperature for about 1 hr as suggested by Dastur.5 INTERACTION IN THE MELT Several experiments were made without columbium to establish a base in silica crucibles. The results are shown in Table I. Except for one run, they agreed well with Floridis1 comparable results in other crucibles. The value of log K1 is taken from Table I as 0.58. This is slightly larger than Floridis' result, probably because of less elaborate safeguards against thermal diffusion. Results obtained in the Fe-Cb-0 series in which no scum formed are shown in Table 11. The equilibrium ratio Kl is defined as ph2o/(ph2[%O]). It is related to the equilibrium constant K1 as follows:

Axial expansion has been determined by X-ray diffraction up to 600° to 760°C in a titanium and four high-oxygen alloys. Expansion data cannot be fitted to the usual quadratic expression and anomalies observed are believed indicative of the changes in the bonding configuration of the valence electrons. Furthermore, there is significant disagreement between data obtained on poly crystalline and single crystal powder specimens. The major disagreement occurs within the temperature range (-470°C) where both mechanical and electrical properties also show markedly anomalous behavior. X. HIS work forms part of an investigation of physical properties of pure titanium and its osolid solutiono alloys with oxygen and nitrogen. In view of the anomalies observed in both the electrical resistivity' and the susceptibility behavior it was decided accurately to determine the thermal expansion behavior of the pure and alloyed a titanium. PREVIOUS WORK The axial expansion coefficients reported for pure titanium are listed below. As can be seen, there is a marked discrepancy between the axial expansion and the experimentally determined coefficients on poly crystal line material. Thus, if we take the most recently reported axial expansivities3,4 we obtain perature interval of 25o to 700°C. The experimental value reported for polycrystalline metal is, however, of the order of 9.7 x 10o6 per OC. EXPERIMENTAL I) Pure Titanium. High purity titanium powder of -325 mesh was used throughout most of this work.
