The Granulometric Ratio (RG) is one of the most important indicators related to the pelletizing product. Through it, it guarantees good permeability of the bed of pellets, optimization of the thermal cycle and, thus, better results of physical quality and consumption of the energy matrix. To guarantee this indicator, it is necessary that the processes of agglomeration of pellets, classification of raw pellets and screening of burned pellets are under control of certain parameters and with a level of stability assured.

Os processos de recebimento, armazenamento e distribuição de combustíveis em grandes empresas mineradoras necessitam de um controle robusto e eficaz de todas as operações, uma vez que representam elevado custo por tonelada de minério produzida e expedida. Para tanto, a automatização dos processos que envolvem combustíveis é necessária, capaz de promover redução de custos, aumento de produtividade, confiabilidade e precisão nos dados e melhorias nas condições de trabalho na gestão e operação em combustíveis. Foi aplicada uma análise descritiva de um estudo de caso de um projeto de automação para esta finalidade implantado na empresa VALE S/A. Foi feita uma avaliação sistemática dos recursos, equipamentos e tecnologias necessárias a completa automação e integração dos processos que envolvem combustíveis e os ganhos alcançados após a implantação.

A análise dos carvões em mistura é de suma importância para redução dos custos e controle de qualidade de uma coqueria, esse trabalho trata da influência da cominuição comum de carvões de diferentes ranks, assim como suas implicações no processo de amostragem e consequentes desvios nas análises. O processo de produção da mistura de carvões na Ternium Brasil possuía um desvio não rastreado entre matéria volátil resultante da amostragem automática da mistura de carvões e a matéria volátil esperada pelo resultado da média ponderada dos carvões individuais no recebimento, para tal foram estudadas todas as etapas do processo de produção da mistura de carvões desde a variação dos carvões em pilha, escoamento em silos e na etapa anterior e posterior a britagem. Os dados foram comparados e foi feito um plano de ação para redução do desvio.

We are at the beginning of an era of profound transformation and human progress — a new industrial revolution. This “Automation of Everything” era will be brought about by digital interfaces, data analysis and control of the physical world through networks employing the Nokia Bell Labs Future X1 architecture — networks to support the digitization and connection of everything and everyone with the goal of automating much of life. The interconnection of robots, machines, drones, sensors, processing platforms and people through Future X networks will provide transformative tools for the automation and optimization of factories and warehouses, ports, electric grids, transportation networks, food, healthcare, construction, logistics and supply chain, emergency response, mining, and other physical industries. To date, the level of automation has been modest at best. Automating these physical industries — industries that account for 70 percent of the US Gross Domestic Product, for example — has the potential to drive significant increases in the world’s economic productivity.2 Realizing the potential of this next industrial revolution will require billions of wirelessly connected endpoints for high fidelity physical-to-digital conversion, millisecond response times to tightly control and coordinate machines and robots, and intelligent analysis to optimize real-time decisions — tasks beyond the reach of current networks. Increased levels of automation are already being achieved through the use of 4G advanced wireless access technologies. The untethering of sensors and actuators in industrial environments through the low-latency, high-bandwidth, high-reliability, and massive scale provided by 5G wireless access will complete this evolution, providing an unprecedented ability to digitize, analyze, comprehend and manipulate the physical world at a scale never previously thought possible. These new capabilities will enable us to create digital models of the physical world with ever higher levels of fidelity, further enhancing our ability to improve operational efficiencies and increase productivity and worker safety. Doing this will require a dramatic evolution in network architecture toward massively distributed cloud control and baseband capacity to achieve the required ultra-low latency and ultra-high bandwidth for industrial and infrastructure automation services — the Future X architecture. In early 2019, Nokia Bell Labs will publish a sequel to “The Future X Network: A Bell Labs Perspective”. “Future X for Industries: A Nokia Bell Labs Perspective” will explore how the Future X architecture will automate many of the world’s physical industries, including chapters devoted to electric power, cities, rail, mining, public safety, manufacturing, ports, logistics and supply chain, and an overarching chapter devoted to securing this highly automated world. Conception the simulation and optimization technologies for industrial processes applied in the mining environment: tools and methodologies. Clarifications provided about the differences of these techniques when compared with static analysis (intuition, use of static spreadsheets, etc.). Presentation of practical cases at several big mining companies in Brazil. These projects will be presented and illustrated through dynamic simulation models developed at those companies, each one with its set of objectives, scope and results (for example: sizing the number of equipment, silo, piles related to the mining processing, logistics, ROM transportation, mine operations plan, etc.).

Due to the high level of competition in tooling sector, a necessity to increase the level of processes and assets management has initiated. Based on the World Class Manufacturing methodology, applied mainly in serial production industries, we have challenged ourselves to adapt the main concepts and implement them in a tooling company. After one work year, we could notice 29% productivity improvement in the bottleneck process, 25% cost reduction in outsourcing, standardization of the processes, 8% reduction in direct labor. Consequently, it was possible to implement a financial reserve and a long term planning cash flow.

Pre-shaped refractory burner blocks play an important role in reheating furnaces operation and melt shops production since they are responsible for heating the billets/plates so that they reach the temperature required for lamination. This paper presents the main characteristics and properties of a new refractory castable developed for pre-shaped burner blocks, which significantly improved the performance of reheating furnaces burner blocks. Tests carried out in 3 different melt shops have shown that the new refractory castable was able to extend the service life of the refractory burner blocks from 1 year (standard product) to more than 3 years (new castable), showing perfect conditions to continue operating for a longer period.

This research is based on a bibliographical review of a field work that was done in the municipality of Parelhas / RN. The area explored, in turn, is known for its richness of mineral resources that are present in pegmatitic rocks. The general objective of this research is to characterize the main properties of the pegmatites and quartzite, in order to verify the heterogeneity of the elements, to raise a possible viability of extraction for economic purposes. The quartzite also presents a siliceous chemical composition. This rock is a source of bricks and silica refractories used in the steel industry and for the preparation of the blast furnace bed, ornamental rock used in different ways (rustic, carved, polished, among others). However, this research resulted in preliminary data, but it would be interesting to be more detailed in order to evaluate the economic viability of these rocks.

Desclassificações de corridas por elementos fora da faixa de especificação do tipo do aço que está sendo produzido impactam negativamente nos indicadores da empresa. É esforço contínuo os projetos de melhoria e ações implantadas para a redução dessas desclassificações. Quando uma corrida é desclassificada, há um custo para refazer a corrida perdida, ocorre um processo de reclassificação que fica em estoque aguardando aplicação, perde-se tempo e pontualidade na produção entre outros impactos. Portanto identificar a causa raiz do problema e atuar em ações efetivas e bem implantadas são as chaves para a resolução do problema e melhoramento do processo. O fósforo é um elemento que deve ser controlado pois é item de norma para atendimento às especificações pois impactam na fragilização do material. Este trabalho mostra a análise realizada na busca da causa raiz das ocorrências das desclassificações de fósforo.

Os aços inoxidáveis são normalmente aplicados em ambientes de elevada agressividade devido à combinação de propriedades, tais como resistência mecânica e química. Os aços duplex são um tipo especial de aços inoxidáveis que devido à sua microestrutura bifásica apresentam propriedades que possibilitam sua aplicação em diferentes meios: indústria química, petroquímica, de petróleo e gás, nuclear entre outras. Contudo, devido a condições operacionais e de processo podem acarretar na formação de fases/precipitados (????, nitretos, carbetos etc). A fase sigma (?), é considerada uma das principais responsáveis pela diminuição das propriedades mecânicas e da resistência à corrosão dos aços duplex. Considerando a importância da aplicação dos aços duplex, muitos trabalho podem ser encontrados na literatura acerca da relação entre a temperatura e a precipitação dessas fases,. Dessa forma este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar uma avaliação do efeito da velocidade de resfriamento sobre a microestrutura e a resistência à corrosão do aço duplex em meio ácido.

Synthetic fiber has been gradually replaced by natural fiber, such as lignocellulosic fiber. In comparison with synthetic fiber, natural fiber has shown economic and environmental advantages. The natural fiber presents interfacial characteristics with polymeric matrices that favor a high impact energy absorption by the composite structure. However, until now little has been evaluated about the hemp fiber incorporated in polymeric matrices. This study has the purpose of evaluate the impact resistance of this kind of epoxy matrix composite reinforced with different percentages of hemp fibers. The impact resistance has substantially increased the relative amount of hemp fiber incorporated as reinforcement in the composite. This performance was associated with the difficulty of rupture imposed by the fibers resulting from the interaction of hemp fiber / epoxy matrix that helps absorb the impact energy.

Por meio da instalação de um buffer tank foi possível tornar a coluna de destilação mais estável, aumentando a produção de líquidos, reduzindo a demanda de energia e otimizando a pré-purificação.

State-of-the-art automation technology enables digitalization of the continuous casting process that goes far beyond conventional automation of industrial production. Primetals Technologies provides a digital twin that combines an intelligent digital representation of a casting machine as well as the casting process and the slabs, blooms or billets that are produced. It allows metallurgists and process engineers to predict the behavior of the involved complex production process and optimize parameters before using them in real production. New steel grades or production processes can be evaluated off-line without any risks to process stability and product quality. Primetals Technologies installs the digital twin with every new installation of a continuous caster optimization system. This paper describes how the setup and simulation possibilities of the digital twin provide numerous benefits by modelling and simulating the casting process. It allows for example the calculation of material properties according to the actual composition, strand surface temperature profiles and dynamic soft reduction before the final point of solidification. An outstanding feature of the digital twin is the replay functionality provided for various models to analyze and further optimize real production situations. The paper also gives an example how usage of the digital twin optimized production at a customer.

Nowadays, due the development of new hot rolled strips at USIMINAS, established the necessity of realizing studies to define new parameters for the welding machine of new pickling line, in order to improve mechanical and metallurgical properties of these materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the weldability of high strength low-alloy steel with low boron content with tensile strength above 600MPa.The influence of energy input and preheating temperature on the mechanical properties of hot rolled strips were analyzed at three distinct thickness (2, 4 and 6 mm). To perform these evaluations were used tensile test, micro-hardness, metallography (micro and macro examination) and scanning electron microscopy analysis. In resume, a good welding performance was achieved, increasing preheating temperature and the welding energy higher than 60%.

Concerning production of low phosphorus steel critical grades at ArcelorMittal Tubarão site, bottom blowing system plays a very important role. For those systems with independently controlled tuyeres, some non-uniform bottom blowing patterns seem to be promising in improving metal-slag mixing; however, based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results of ArcelorMittal Tubarão’s post oxygen bottom blowing, this may not be generalized. Also, from industrial trials it became clear that higher the bottom blowing flow rate, the closer were the end point P to the equilibrium. Despite this result an analysis of the apparent mass transfer coefficient has shown a week correlation with the classical power stir correlation suggesting a more complex kinetic limiting step for phosphorus removal.

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), which is operated by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), was inaugurated in 1959 and was the first Integrated Steel Plant in the public sector in India. In 2013, RSP commissioned their No. 5, 4060 m³ Blast Furnace, India's largest. It was built as a turn-key project by a consortium consisting of Danieli Corus and Tata Projects Ltd. and is entirely based on the technology and know-how of Danieli Corus. The new Blast Furnace is the key element of an expansion program that doubles the plant's production capacity and with much of the existing ironmaking capacity reaching the end of its technical and economic life span, it enables RSP to meet existing as well as growing demand for its products. This article discusses how this greenfield Blast Furnace was built in an existing and operating Integrated Steel Plant. It covers the accommodation of land, planning of the new installation to fit the available plot as well as the updated logistical lay-out of the plant. Technical details of the installation are presented, including their consequences for RSP's environmental performance and new perspectives for campaign planning.

A thyssenkrupp CSA (TKCSA), Rio de Janeiro, possui dois Altos-Fornos. Ambos iniciaram operação em 2010, Alto-Forno 01 em 13/07/2010 e Alto-Forno 02 em 06/12/2010. Em Dezembro de 2014, foram verificados problemas de deslocamento dos staves de ferro fundido e deformação dos staves de cobre. Analisando estes eventos foi identificado quebra dos parafusos de fixação dos staves de ferro fundido na carcaça. O trabalho apresenta histórico destes acontecimentos, as intervenções realizadas como meio de preservar a integridade e prolongar a vida útil dos Altos-Fornos e os resultados obtidos após retirada de água do interior do mesmo.

This paper will provide an overall technology update on Tenova’s modular i BOF® technology package for improved endpoint detection (Carbon and Temperature), slop detection and auto-tapping control, with a primary focus will be on Tenova's Slop Detection System (SDS). Accurate Slopping prediction is a critical tool in the operation of a BOF. It provides the steelmaker with an additional protective system to increase yield & productivity while reducing operating costs. Tenova Goodfellow's i BOF® slop-detection technology uses lance vibration analysis with real-time alerts to give steel makers advance warning of the onset of a slop and a measurement of the slop severity. The system is designed to provide direct feedback control of lance position and oxygen flow rate, for rapid mitigation of potential slopping events. This paper will provide a summary on how the i BOF® technology package has been implemented, including trials and general results.
