We are studying the hydrometallurgical recycling process of indium from an Indium-Tin-Oxide(ITO) target. For this process, it is necessary to remove Sn(IV) ions from the aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions containing In(III). In this study, the removal of Sn(IV) ions by a potentiostatic electrolysis method was examined. The polarization measurements and potentiostatic electrolyses were carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere. In the Sn(IV) solution, current begins to rise at the cathode potential of -0.26 V vs. SHE, and increases with a reduction in the cathode potential. In the In(III) solution, current begins to rise at a cathode potential of -0.43 V vs. SHE. Metallic tin was electrodeposited without indium electrodeposition at the cathode potentials of -0.30 and -0.40V vs. SHE. More than 98% of the Sn(IV) was removed at the cathode potential of -0.40 V after the electrolysis for 3hrs. Both tin and indium were electrodeposited at the cathode potential of -0.50V vs. SHE.

As everyone knows, blasters are required to file blast reports of every blast for regulatory purposes. To this day, the authors see many handwritten blast reports. Handwritten blast reports are notorious for containing errors or omissions. This is not because the blaster intends to misreport information. It is because blasters have many tasks to complete in a day, are sometimes in a rush, and could accidentally miscalculate data, omit items, or record incorrect data. In most cases, blasters do not suffer consequences to these errors because blast reports are seldom reviewed in detail. In some cases, such as when a blasting operation undergoes some sort of litigation process, the reports are reviewed in detail and the blaster is ultimately held responsible. If the reports contain errors, the blaster can be fined, have his/her license revoked, or worse. Electronic blast reporting and centralized data management can help reduce or eliminate the potential for accidental blast reporting errors to occur. This paper presents many ways that electronic blast reporting can reduce or eliminate blast reporting errors, decrease time and extra costs spent reporting, and improve efficiencies in the field and the office.

"INTRODUCTION During September, October, and November 1946 the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, off' the United States Department of the Interior, Pittsburgh, Pa., tested four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and approved them in accordance with Schedule 13C. Approval was granted with the proviso that certain specifications outlined on the approval plate be made fully effective, and with the understanding that established safe practices in training in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus are of major importance.The excellent records made during the past 30 years in the safe use of self-contained breathing apparatus, some of which required the almost continuous wearing of apparatus during several hours daily for days, weeks, or months, may be attributed largely to the Bureau's system of rescue organizations, selection of physically fit rescue workers, effective training, and educational work done in rescue and recovery operations during fires or following disasters and in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Loss of life during wearing of breathing apparatus was due almost invariably to poorly assembled or otherwise defective apparatus, poor physical condition of the wearer, or insufficient training or some incorrect procedure.The newly developed breathing apparatus are of much simpler design than the conventional type used for the past several years; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the care, use, and limitations of the new types of apparatus as for the older long-established types, if anything like safety is to be achieved in using them. The Bureau of Mines considers that 1/2-hour and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus should be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work, and their capabilities and limitations should be well understood by those who wear them."

It is believed that considerable economic benefit would arise if run of mine (ROM) coal from the underground mines in the Winifrede seam could he enriched before shipment to the preparation plant by partial removal of the shale. Shale could comprise up to 50% of the ROM product. Complete mine-mouth separation is not necessary, but any process must be dry and have high Btu recovery. We have conducted a preliminary analysis of coal/shale mixtures from the Winifrede seam and we find that it is quite possible that a 50-50 ROM mixture of coal and shale could be converted to a 60-40 coal-shale mixture by inspection of individual lumps coming from the mine. The device would consist of a feeder/siever section to deliver the ROM coal > 5 cm (2 in) to an inspection station via a conveyor belt. This inspection station decides if a piece is coal or shale, and if it is shale, activates an air jet to blow shale off of the belt. We have evaluated a dielectric loss technique for the inspection device. The potential advantages of the dielectric loss method are high throughput, low capital cost, and no special handling or licenses would be required. Such a single lump inspection technique is made possible because of advances in high speed electronics and servo systems. This paper provides a summary of our analyses on the Winifrede coal sample, a description of a proposed apparatus to separate coal from shale, some of the experiments needed to demonstrate our ideas.

DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone, quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide, The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over-burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and trans-ported to the dump in quarry cars, Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi-circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft, above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river: As quarrying pro-gressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp,, 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft, above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting hays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage.

Increase the safety of operators of front-end loaders by providing a means of monitoring the machine's stability. Approach Through a research contract, the Bureau of Mines developed a front-end loader stability indicator which provides the machine operator with a reliable, easily interpreted display assessing the stability of the machine. How It Works Statistics show that front-end loader accidents are the largest single category of machinery-related accidents in the surface mining industry. Many of the fatalities resulting from these accidents occur when front-end loaders rollover and either crush the operator who is trapped within the cab or strike the operator who is trying to jump to safety. Although rollover protective structures (ROPS) are required by law on front-end loaders to protect operators in the case of a rollover, these do not prevent the actual rollover from occurring. In fact, the operator has no way of evaluating the stability of the machine except by using personal judgment. The Bureau of Mines responded to this problem by developing a front-end loader stability indicator whose primary function is to Indicate to the operator when the machine is approaching an unstable situation which may trigger a rollover. The device bases Its interpretation on measurement of the normal loads on the machine's wheels. Strain gage instrumentation located on the machine is used to monitor the magnitude and change of forces acting normal to the front-end loader's wheels. These forces are direct indicators of the machine's center of gravity relative to its position on the ground. The strain gages are connected to electronic circuitry which amplifies and processes the signals. Stability or instability of the loader is relayed to the operator through a display of green, amber and red lights.

The practice of using partly depleted oil reservoirs for gas-storage operations is proving successful. Moreover, this practice provides a method of secondary oil recovery when gas is cycled at full-storage reservoir pressure. Because of the relative newness of this operation, a study was undertaken to assist engineers in developing improved gas-injection and production procedures and in calculating the amount of gas needed for completely repressuring reservoirs. This paper is the third in a series reporting the progress of a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of reservoir performance during complete gas repressuring and gas cycling. A procedure for estimating secondary oil recovery by this method is also under study. One report (7)3/ describes the laboratory equipment. The other report (8) gives (1) data on the New York City field, Clay County, Tex., which has been converted to gas-storage operations; (2) laboratory data from research with a model oil reservoir, in which primary production, complete gas repressuring, and gas cycling for the New York City field were simulated; and (3) theory to explain reservoir performance during gas repressuring.

As orebodies being mined globally are of ever-decreasing grades, the focus on the concentration process has moved increasingly to the challenges faced in management of the gangue minerals. This is especially so in the flotation of platinum group minerals (PGMs), where head grades are typically in the region of 4–7 g/t. Hence, in PGM operations, a typical recovery of about 80 percent requires depressing about 85 percent of the gangue minerals. In a flotation cell the main control parameters are reagent type and dosage, froth depth and air addition rate. This paper reviews research projects carried out over an extended period aimed at optimizing the depression of gangue minerals: both those that are naturally floatable and those, such as chromite, that are entrained.  This has involved comparing the two major depressants used in the industry — guar and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) — in the depression of the relevant gangue minerals, as well as investigating their consequent effect on the behavior of the froth phase. Because most PGM flotation plants treat the ore as if all the PGMs are associated with sulfides, copper sulfate is widely used as an activator, but this can also lead to inadvertent activation of gangue minerals. Finally, chromite levels must be kept below 3–5 percent to avoid any negative effects on smelter performance, and thus it is important to reduce chromite recovery which mainly occurs due to entrainment through, for example, froth depth control.

A.5 Conclusions and Recommendations The illustrative simulations in the previous section have demonstrated 1. Flexibility of the program to simulate a wide variety of configurations and cases. 2. Ability of the program to predict evacuation time within a small margin of error (5 percent -.n a case considered). 3. Usefulness of the program in making some of the evacuation decisions. The above leads to a conclusion that the computer program can provide a useful tool in evaluating mine evacuation in the event of a fire. "Following the acquisition of grinding- circuit data at Brenda Mines Limited for simulation purposes, various methods to mass balance the circuit were evaluated. Unfortunately, different answers were obtained for different balancing methods. A data-adjustment procedure was therefore developed. The procedure assumes that all ""best-fit"" criterion. A search is conducted with the minimum set of water masses and narrow size ranges of solids around the circuit (called search variables), which permit the computation of any of the measured data points. Search variables are used to calculate measured values for an objective function of the form: [ ] where W, is a weighting factor•, M1 is a measured value and M. is a corresponding . value calculated from search vanables. The best values of M, are those which minimize R. The above method is compared with others that have been utilized for mass balancing circuits."

FOR more than 25 years evaluations of coal cleaning units have appeared in many publications, and during this time considerable progress has been made in developing the theory and techniques of calculating washery results. A variety of characteristics have been defined over the years, many receiving general recognition during the first post-war Coal Preparation Conference in Paris in 1950. Coal preparation has become a science, and the approach to preparation problems is being revolutionized. Formerly, for example, if a coal operator wanted to know the performance of a given cleaning unit for a particular grade of his run-of-mine, he either shipped a carload to the manufacturer for a test run or relied on a report of a test carried out on a coal similar to the one he intended to clean. In modern practice the expensive, time-consuming test work generally can be avoided if the washability curves of the coal in question and the error curve of the cleaner are known. Normally a guarantee can be given on the strength of this information. General acceptance of modern standards has thus reduced the need for pilot-scale models of existing types of coal cleaners. Needless to say, the method requires exhaustive and accurate information on the cleaning unit and on all the additional circumstances affecting its results, in- formation that ultimately can be secured only from actual tests made in the laboratory or in the washery.

As an energy source, lignite is short on selling points-it contains large amounts of moisture and often large amounts of ash, resulting in low heat content. The moisture produces rapid oxidation upon exposure and self-ignition commonly occurs within two to three weeks, resulting in major transportation and storage problems. Nevertheless, as interest in alternate fuel sources increases, lignite deposits in the Coastal Plain of the US are attracting more and more attention. Two lignite mines are operating in Texas and additional developments are planned in that state, Arkansas, and Louisiana. At present, Texas lignite is burned only at mine-mouth generating facilities, but more exotic uses such as gasification are projected in the future.

I have on. a few occasions given some interesting information on the various subjects such as The Prolonged Famines of Arabia, Movements and Migrations of the Races of Men, Life Indications on the Planet Mars, and today I have come before you with a new step in the roadway-Coal Geology. It is sometimes difficult to interpret the geological processes so as to be understood intelligently, but it shall be my aim to make this as plain as possible.

The annual consumption of sand and gravel aggregate in 2006 in the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area was about 76 Mt (84 million st) (USGS, 2009), or about 18 t (20 st) per capita. Quaternary alluvial deposits in the modern stream channel of the Agua Fria River west of Phoenix are mined and processed to provide some of this aggregate to the greater Phoenix area. The Agua Fria drainage basin (Fig. 1) is characterized by rugged mountains with high elevations and steep stream gradients in the north, and by broad alluvial filled basins separated by elongated fault-block mountain ranges in the south. The Agua Fria River, the basin?s main drainage, flows south from Prescott, AZ and west of Phoenix to the Gila River. The Waddel Dam impounds Lake Pleasant and greatly limits the flow of the Agua Fria River south of the lake. The southern portion of the watershed, south of Lake Pleasant, opens out into a broad valley where the river flows through urban and agricultural lands to its confluence with the Gila River, a tributary of the Colorado River.

Seafloor polymetallic sulfides have been found in diverse volcanic and tectonic settings on the ocean floor at water depths ranging from 3700 meters to <1500 meters. More than 100 occurrences of hydrothermal mineralization have been documented (including Fe-oxide deposits, Mn-crusts, metalliferous sediments, and massive sulfides), but high-temperature hydrothermal activity and large accumulations of polymetallic sulfides are known at fewer than 20 different sites. Chemical analyses of samples from these deposits indicate that they contain important concentrations of Cu, Zn, Ag, and Au, comparable to those of massive sulfide deposits on land. However, the lack of sufficient data concerning the distribution, size, and bulk composition of seafloor deposits precludes a meaningful assessment of their resource potential.

Data are presented on the extractant behaviour on toxic metal removal from spent hydroprocessing catalyst, produced at the North Atlantic Refinery plant in Newfoundland and Labrador. Aliquat 336 was selected due to its potential capabilities for the separation of cobalt, molybdenum and nickel from the leachate extractant produced by aqua regia. The solvent extraction process was statistically modeled using central composite design (CCD), and the numerical optimization was conducted to achieve the optimum point for toxic metal recovery for the extractant.

One of the most frequently asked quesitons is: "Where is copper (price and usage) going?" I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

The effect of the rate of cooling on titanium, zirconium, and thallium has been measured. For titanium-molybdenum alloys, it has been shown that for molybdenum concentration up to 8 pct the rate of cooling has no effect on the transformation temperature, but this temperature decreases progressively with increasing molybdenum content. HIGH strength to weight ratio and remarkable corrosion resistance have often been advanced as the main reasons for the present widespread interest in titanium. For the physical metallurgist, the existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium is another important factor. As in the case of iron, an allotropic transformation may be the fundamental property upon which the response of Ti-base alloys to heat treatment will depend. It is therefore important to study the mechanism of the allotropic transformation in pure titanium and the effect of alloying elements on this transformation. The existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium was reported in 1931 by Schulze.&apos; Later, De Boer et al.&apos; determined the transformation temperature from a discontinuity in the electrical resistivity at 882"42O°C. According to recent work," the transformation temperature is 882.5"&1°C. The crystal structure of the room temperature a phase is hexagonal close-packed and the high temperature fi phase is body-centered cubic.&apos; It is well known that the high temperature /3 phase of pure titanium cannot be retained by quenching to room temperature. Several investigators&apos;-&apos; have shown that in alloys of titanium with metals which are soluble in the @ phase (for example, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, or manganese), the /3 structure can be retained, providing the concentration of the alloying element is greater than a certain critical value. Below this critical value, the alloys transform during quenching, at least partially, into a supersaturated solid solution having the a. structure. This behavior is very similar to that found in some iron binary alloys (Fe-Ni and Fe-Mh, for example) and is an indication that the transformation might occur by means of a shear mechanism analogous to that observed in the austenite-martensite reaction. The present investigation is mostly concerned with the effect of the rate of cooling on the /3 to a transformation. In the first portion of this paper, the results obtained on pure titanium are described. Two other pure metals, zirconium and thallium, were also investigated, because they both have an allotropic transformation like titanium, from an hexagonal close-packed to a body-centered cubic structure. For purposes of comparison, the effect of rate of cooling of the y to a transformation of iron was included in the experimental program. The second part of this paper deals with Ti-Mo alloys. The equilibrium phase boundaries involving the solid state reactions on the Ti-rich side of the system were determined and a study was made of the effect of the rate of cooling on the transformation of the high temperature /3 solid solution. Experimental Procedure Since the main object of the present investigation was the determination of the effect of the rate of cooling on a transformation temperature, the best technique available was that used by Greninger" in his study of the martensite arrest in carbon steels. This method consists of heating a very small sample of metal to which fine thermocouple wires are .attached, cooling the sample rapidly by means of a blast of helium, and recording the temperature vs. time curve on an oscillograph. The apparatus used in the present experiments was very similar to that described by Greninger, except that the heating coil was made of molybdenum wire (0.040 in. in diam) and the assembly was placed in a bell jar under vacuum of 10" mm Hg or less.
