This presentation addresses some of the problems encountered in estimating the capacity of drilled shafts and augered, cast-in-place piles in soft rock. Methods to quantify side and base resistance are suggested. However, the methods that are described should always be verified locally by performing load tests.

The shaft of the Raven mine, at Butte, Mont., is an incline 1,700 ft. in length and dipping at various angles. At the top the dip is 70" from the horizontal, but this is gradually flattened until at the 300-ft. level the inclination is only 47. This angle continues to the 1,100-ft. level, below which it curves with a 125-ft. radius to 78". In addition to these variations in dip, the shaft does not lie in the same vertical plane, with the result that the hoisting rope not only rubs at intervals on both the hanging and foot walls, but presses strongly against the west dividers near the collar, while 300 ft. below it runs close to the east end plates. The early operators used no idlers, aid wall plates cut 6 in. deep by the rope resulted. Later operators first attempted to overcome the excessive friction, and the wear of rope and wall plates, by introducing solid cast-iron idlers, 3 in. in diameter. To allow for the travel of the rope from side to side some of these had to be 3 ft. long and were very heavy. Judging from the appearance of the old idlers of this type found at the mine, they often failed to turn in the bearings, which is not surprising when it is considered that they would have to make 1,000 rev. a minute under ordinary hoisting conditions. The next rolls were made of wood, 6 in. in diameter, with an iron band about each end, and a pintle of 1-in. round steel driven in at the ends to serve as a shaft. These wore rapidly, and were soon replaced by rolls made from water pipe, 5 or 6 in. in diameter, cut to the desired length and fitted with a wooden cylinder into which the pintle was driven. Where the idlers were used on the hanging wall of the shaft the original bearing was simply a piece of + by 1 3/2 in. strap iron, 10 in. long, turned up at the end in a circle 11/8 in. in diameter to receive the shaft. A small hole served for oiling, and common black oil was generally used, although filtered oil from engine bearings and compressor bearings was also used. When the rolls were to be placed on the foot wall the bearings were made from two pieces of 1 by 3 in. steel, 6 in. long. A half circle was cut on the flat side of each piece and the two half circles together formed a bearing. Oil holes were provided, and in some cases holes were bored through the two pieces so that they could be screwed or spiked to the wall plates.

Halsey, Engineer for the Rand Drill Company, of New York, and its use mill abridge the notable wastefulness of power of the striking rock-drill, and, at the same time, increase its capacity for work. That the older type of rock-drill is wasteful in power, is generally admitted; the cause being the use of steam* without expansion, arid the "cushion" of the blow, by the incoming steam upon the lower † end of the piston before the cutting tool strikes the rock.

THE concentration of tin in the tailing from Sullivan ore has been de-scribed by H. R. Banks, superintendent of the Sullivan concentrator, in a paper presented at the annual meeting of the B.C. Division of the Institute in October, 1941(1). The reduction of the concentrate EARLY EXPERIMENTAL WORK Experimental work on the smelting of Sullivan tin concentrate was done in Trail. Preliminary tests in the laboratory indicated that the concentrate could be successfully treated in an electric furnace. A small electro-thermic pilot plant was built and, at the same time, reduction tests were made in an oil-fired reverberatory furnace. Both types of treatment gave satisfactory results. It developed that no fluxes, other than those already in the ore and in the ash of the reducing agent (either coke or coal), were needed. By using an excess of iron, a complete recovery of the tin in the slag was obtained, but with 20 to 30 per cent iron in the tin. A counter-current treatment was thus indicated, viz., the primary slag was first treated with hard-head (iron-tin alloy) from the refining and final slag smelting, producing tin with 2 to 4 per cent Fe. This secondary slag was subsequently treated with scrap iron to produce tin-iron alloy, and a final slag low enough in tin to waste. By following this line of endeavour, a tentative flow-sheet was drawn up and a successful operation was established. Without resorting to electrolytic refining, a metal comparable in purity to standard tin was produced. Metallurgical results and operating costs were found to be very similar with an electric furnace or a fuel-fired furnace. 'However, electric furnace smelting was chosen because the furnace required was smaller, and because some doubt existed as to the cleaning of the final slag in the reverberatory furnace reduction.

"Les Terrains Auriferes (LIA) Property, formerly the Malartic Goldfield (Goldfield) mine, ceased its remaining milling operations in the fall of 1994. During the early years of mining, the mill processed a non-sulfide ore with substantial carbonate mineralization.In 1977 after an extended shutdown period, ore from a nearby property, Bousquet, was processed at the mill. That ore contained larger quantities of sulfides, and unlike the old tailings, had acid generating potential.Upon closure of the L TA mill, the closure options considered for the L TA site were to cover with:1. a thin cover of 0.5 metres of borrow material (sand and gravel) to achieve basic erosion protection/stabilization; collect acidic seepage and treat with lime.2. a 2 metres of non-acid producing tailings; final surface to be vegetated.3. an engineered oxygen barrier consisting of a multi-layer cover; final surface to be vegetated.The paper presents the technological and economical methodologies that were used to select the closure alternative, describe the associated construction challenges that were faced with the implementation of the multi-layer cover concept and presents preliminary results on the cover's performance.In addition to being the first full scale demonstration of this type of multi-layer engineered oxygen barrier cover technology, this project had the advantage of using non acid producing mine tailings as part of the reclamation solution."

The Minister of Fisheries and Oceans for Canada is responsible, under the Fisheries Act, for the protection of all marine organisms and their habitats. The detonation of explosives in or adjacent to fish habitat has been demonstrated to cause disturbance, injury and/or death to aquatic organisms, and/or disturbance, destruction or alteration of their habitats. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans recognizes that the use of explosives may be the most practical or cost effective method by which to complete a project and has undertaken the development of a set of guidelines that will prevent or minimize the destruction of or disturbance to aquatic organisms and their habitats while at the same time allowing scientific and industrial users of explosives to proceed with their projects.

A field test was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Cyprus Plateau Starpoint No. 2 Mine. near Price. UT. to study the support rock interaction mechanics. Twelve instrumented. fully grouted roof holts and eight sagmeters were installed in the roadway of a two-entry gate road to measure load changes and roof movements. Readings were taken during section development and as each longwall panel passed the test area. Loads that resulted from development of the en- tries were higher than would be expected if simple suspension of the roof rock was the sole cause of loading. When the first longwall face passed the test section massive beam behavior was exhibited over the entry and adjacent pillar. However, no significant localized bending was detected at any of the strain gauge locations. After the first panel passed the test section. all the roof bolts had at least one zone where the steel had yielded. Loading continued to increase. and when the face from the second panel was adjacent to the test section. 70 pct of the strain gauges at the 6-. 1%. and 30-in locations had passed the yield point of the steel roof bolt. However, even at these high load levels, the supporting pattern was sufficient to provide adequate reinforcement to the mine roof.

"INTRODUCTION The orienting phases of the current investigation of cushioned blasting in the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines were indicated in a previous publication (5) 3/. Pertinent literature reviewed therein indicated a highly controversial field. This emphasized the need for experimental studies of many factors that affect the health and safety of miners and the efficiency of mining operations. Results of some orienting tests showed marked effects on practical hazards. Further, they emphasized the necessity and importance of the contemplated investigation. The scope and general plan of these practical inquiries into the safety of cushioned blasting were indicated.This investigation of cushioned blasting relates to the various means employed to reduce the intensity of application of energy from explosive actions in boreholes. It has been suggested (from p. 19 of reference 5) that the divisions of this work would correspond to the salient hazards affected by cushioned blasting. These include the ignition hazard, hazards from poisonous gases, and other practical hazards in the blasting technique. The ignition hazard was resolved into two components of approximately equal weight. These include studies of effects upon (1) the incendivity of blown-out shots and upon (2) the occurrence of such shots. Experimental studies of effects on the incendivity of blown-out shots were first undertaken. Questions of the best procedure for making these evaluations have been adduced, and the interpretation and utilization of the results of gallery testing seemed to require detailed attention; some preliminary general considerations of such testing were therefore necessary."

Opportunities to promote enhanced eco-efficiency (i.e. the simultaneous improvement in economic and environmental performance) for the minerals industry exist across the whole value chain. However, given the current operational models of major companies within the industry, and their focus on refining of primary ore bodies, it is important to understand where such opportunities might lie within minerals beneficiation, as it is here that major environmental pressures are felt. This paper examines the combination of unit technologies in a minerals beneficiation train, and explores the inter-relationship between energy input and water consumption for a given mineralogy and product recovery, as these are two critical environmental issues which affect the overall viability of many minerals plants. In particular, we review constitutive relationships for each of the sub-processes of comminution, flotation, and tailings dewatering, and suggest how these might be integrated into a unified hybrid model, with particle size distribution as the key design variable. Such a model can then be used to explore the trade-offs between different performance objectives (be these technical, economic or environmental) as part of a multiple-objectives optimisation exercise. In this way, it may become practical to envision situations in which concentrate grade and recovery are sacrificed, marginally, in order to reduce energy demand in comminution, and improve overall water recovery. In addition, this work provides a useful baseline against which to analyse the potential for dry processing. This becomes more relevant as the industry commits to advancing the sustainable development agenda in the face of the increasing life -cycle costs and impacts of minerals processing operations, coupled to declining ore body grades, and the desire to maximise recovery of minor and trace elements. Some specific observations for copper are offered, supported by operational data from Zambian copper mines.

A review will be given on the electrodeposition of Au, Ag and Pd and their technically important alloys focusing on recent work at the Forschungsinstitut. Special emphasis will be given to the influence of impurities on the behaviour of the electrolyte and the properties of the deposits, e.g. on resistance and on thermal and mechanical behaviour. The importance of C in gold and silver deposits and of H2 in Pd and its alloys at normal and high speed deposition rates will be discussed. Among Pd alloys attention will be focused on the Pd-Ni and Pd-Ni-Co systems. Comments will be made on deposition of Rh and Pt.

Residues from titanium smelting tend to contain scandium. The scandiumis discarded because no suitable process exists for its recovery from the residue. Valuable-metal recovery from discharged residue is critical for environmental conservation and to achieve a sustainable society. Since 2015, JXNippon Mining&Metals has been developing a process for scandium recovery from the residue of a titaniumsmelting process. The process consists of the following steps: scandium concentrating by classification or neutralization, selective scandium leaching, impurity removal by neutralization, solvent extraction of scandium by using D2EHPA, purification, and roasting. We optimized the above steps to achieve an effective process to obtain scandium oxide (Sc2O3). In this paper, we introduce results from the bench-scale test of the scandium recovery flowsheet developed by JX Nippon Mining & Metals.

The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron; however, emissions from sintering and coking cause environmental pressure for the integrated steel works. The combustion of coke fines (breeze) during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (GHG) (eg carbon dioxide) and is a source of SOx and NOx emissions. Coking capacity is also constrained by environmental concerns and economic factors, such as increased coke consumption, and short supply is leading to high prices. Improved coking practices, which result in reduced production of fines, are also contributing to the tight availability of breeze for sintering. This combination of factors presents an opportunity to consider alternatives to coke as a fuel for sintering. CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide liberated during combustion can be sequestered back into growing biomass. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource and can be integrated with good land management practices such as remediation of salinity affected land. Weeds, especially woody weeds, can also be used as a source of biomass for charcoal, and integrating char production with weed management can help address a pressing environmental issue in Australia. Previous reported preliminary testwork indicated that the use of Red Gum char as a replacement for coke resulted in a product sinter of comparable quality, improvements in productivity and significant reductions in SOx and NOx emissions. In the latest testwork, CSIRO has examined the properties of a range of potential charcoals, and has conducted a further series of granulation and small-scale sintering trials with them in simulated Japanese Steel Mill iron ore blends. Sinter fuels characterised and evaluated include industry sourced coke breeze, commercially available wood char and a charcoal from prickly acacia (acacia nilotica). Prickly acacia has been declared a noxious weed, is widespread in Australia, and is classified as a æWeed of National SignificanceÆ. The results presented in this paper support the notion that charcoal outperforms coke in many aspects of iron ore sintering and factoring in environmental considerations makes the switch to charcoal even more favourable.

"Electrodeposition of CdTe was studied using aqueous ammonia-alkaline electrolytic baths in which Cd11-and Te1V-ions are dissolving as Cd11(NH3)/+ and Te1vol-ions, respectively. Ca-thodic polarization curves of the baths suggest the presence of strong interaction between the Cd11-and Te1V-ions; electrodeposition of tellurium is inhibited by the presence of Cd(NH3)/+ ions. The interaction makes it possible to electrodeposit CdTe films with stoichiometric composition. Polycrystalline CdTe thin film of about 1 µm thickness was electrodeposited at 343 K from ammonia-alkaline solutions (pH= 10.7) containing TeO32-(<20 mmol dm-3) and Cd(NH3)/+ ( < 60 mmol dm-3) ions. Increasing Cd(NH3)/42+/TeO32- mole ratio or decreasing total concentration of ammonia/ammonium-ion gave flat and smooth crystalline CdTe deposits at constant cathode potential-0.70 to -0.30 V vs SHE at 343 K.IntroductionCadmium telluride (CdTe) is well-known as a compound semiconductor whose band gap, i.e. 1.44 eV, is suitable for solar energy conversion with a photovoltaic cell. Various methods, such as CVD (chemical vapor deposition) and electrodeposition, of preparing CdTe thin films for solar cells have been investigated.Acidic sulfate solutions with a pH of 1-2 are usually employed for CdTe processing by electrodeposition.1-3) The electrodeposition of compound semiconductors is usually achieved (i) at a higher cathode potential than the redox potential of less-noble species, can in this case, and (ii) under the condition of diffusion-limiting current of a more noble species, Te1Y.4) There-fore, a suitable CdII/TeIV concentration ratio in the acidic electrolytic baths, resulting in the deposition of stoichiometric CdTe, is determined by the diffusion-limiting current density of TeIV- reduction, i.e. the concentration of HTeIVO2+ · Since the solubility ofTe1v species HTeIVO2+ in the acidic solutions is quite low, the rate at which CdTe is deposited from the acidic solutions is extremely slow."

Recent increase in steel demand has led to the increased usage of high grade iron ores. During the mining, crushing and washing of ore, huge quantities of fines and slimes (<150 µm) are generated, majority of which is dumped into tailing ponds owing to their high alumina contents (~10-15%). Due to rapid depletion of high grade iron ore, it is the need of the hour to utilize low grade iron ore fines and slimes. These fines and slimes contain high iron values assaying 45-60% Fe. Dumping these valuable resources in ponds locks enormous land space and causes environmental hazards. The constituent minerals present in Indian iron ores comprise of hematite, goethite, gibbsite, kaolinite and quartz. Our research is focused on beneficiation of iron ore slimes through selective flocculation. We use density functional theory simulations to screen the reagents and perform experiments with screened reagents to determine the experimental conditions for effective performance of the reagents. Our studies revealed that reagents like starch, guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose exhibit excellent selectivity in high alkaline pH range. However, the higher cost of alkali makes the process economically less attractive. In the present study, a commercial reagent from NALCO Water (Hi-Tex 83570) has been explored as selective flocculant for beneficiation of iron ore slimes in wide pH range (4-11). However, the reagent was also found to be the most selective in alkaline pH range only. Full factorial design of experiments was done considering three parameters namely, pulp density, flocculant dosage and settling time. Regression models were developed for yield, iron grade, alumina grade and iron recovery in the concentrate, using experimental results. Further parameter optimization was done to achieve high Fe recoveries and low alumina recoveries. The optimal parameters thus arrived at were validated with the experiments. We were able to achieve a concentrate grade of 60.0% Fe and 5.1% Al2O3 with 68.8% Fe recovery from a feed containing of 53.1% Fe and 8.9% Al2O3. The performance of flocculant Hi-Tex 83570 was also compared with reagents starch and guar gum.

The East Texas field is in Smith, Rusk, Gregg, Upshur and Cherokee counties, Texas. The discovery well was completed Sept. 8, 1930, near the eastern limit of the field. Within less than one year the new field became the dominant factor in the world production of crude oil. On Aug. 16, 1931, eleven months after completion of the discovery well, there were 1644 wells in the field, and the average daily production was 584,475 bbl. Since that time the number of wells has increased to 8195 on Oct. 1, 1933, and the field has produced 385,979,691 bbl. of oil. The geology of the East Texas field has been discussed by Lahee,1 Levorsen,2 Minor and Hanna3 and others, and it will not be discussed in detail here. The field is a structure of the monocline type on the westward dipping homocline between the Sabine uplift and the East Texas geosyncline. Production is obtained from the Woodbine group, which has been truncated and then sealed by the Austin chalk, which rests unconformably upon it. The oil-saturated part of the sand lies bettween a sub-sea depth of 3050 ft. on the east side of the field, where the Woodbine sand stops and the Austin chalk rests directly upon older formations, and a sub-sea depth of 3320 ft., which was the average depth of the water table in the sand at the time the field was discovered. The field is about 40 miles long and has an average width of approximately 4 1/2 miles. The area within the proven limits of the field is close to 116,580 acres and the normal Woodbine water underlies nearly 62,000 acres on the western side of the field at the present time. The field is unusual in several respects: (1) the tremendous size of the reservoir system and the quantity of oil in place; (2) the large area of the oil and water contact, which makes water movement possible into the oil-bearing part of the structure; (3) the absence of free gas within the main producing sand of the field. "Controlled recirculation may be considered as a beneficial means in mines of cold climate, where heating of air is required, and in deep or extensive mines, where cooling of air is required. Controlled recirculation can be designed by proper sizing of the booster fans with respect to main fan. Intuitively, it seems that the buildup of methane at the face will cease when a steady state condition is attained, and also that, at that same time, the maximum concentration at the face will remain same as in the return air. This supposition is proved by mathematical analysis that considers uniform mixing of methane in air in successive cycles of recirculation. This study includes two scenarios to show the effect of controlled recirculation on methane concentration in a sample network. Firstly, when recirculation crosscut exists near the working face; secondly, when recirculation crosscut exists away from the working face. The later scenario shows lesser buildup of methane concentration than the former one. INTRODUCTION The controlled recirculation is designed purposefully to allow a partial fraction of used air that increases the air velocity due to increased quantity of air and consequently allows effective dilution of contaminants to improve local ventilation condition at the working face. It can be designed by proper sizing of booster fan with respect to main fan in a ventilation network. Controlled recirculation may be categorized as crosscut, in-line or combined system based upon the configuration of the booster fan locations in a district ventilation network. Research on controlled recirculation has shown numerous benefits of controlled recirculation especially in deep or extensive underground mines, where further heating or cooling is required (Calizaya 1990; McPherson 1993 and Jones, 1987). However, fear of buildup of concentration has misled the mining communities to view the controlled recirculation as a hazard and deprived the mining industry to derive benefits from recirculation. Western Europe is a dynamic region, with an emerging co-operation between the individual nations both politically, economically, technically and scientifically. The European Union, today with 15 member States and with a range of central European States applying for membership, is a catalyst for this Cupertino, using a combination of EU funds, for financing research initiatives, and legislation to enhance development of technology and environmental performance. Europe is a major net importer of metals but with a large potential for own production, in particular in the accession countries. The metals and mining sector is furthermore identified as having a large potential to generate wealth both in todayÆs EU and in the future, widened Union. This paper provides a chart of examples on the many research initiatives presently underway in Europe, addressing environmental issues related to mining. The list of programmes and projects does not claim to be complete; it is rather an illustration on the wideness of the approach, describing various ways for transboundary Cupertino. The approach taken by many of the programmes goes beyond the strict ARD scientific area and therefore only a limited number of the many programmes can be identified as ARD research programmes. Also national programmes, without EU funding, are operating, eg in Sweden, Germany, and UK. The picture is continuously changing with new programmes being commissioned and old ones being completed.

A research program to aid development of improved methods for increased production of petroleum from partly depleted reservoirs is a vital part of the Bureau of Mines effort to effect true conservation of that mineral resource. This report presents results of an investigation to identify the clay minerals within some Appalachian petroleum-reservoir sands, the effect of clay content on the fluid-flow behavior of those sands, and the use of brines in water-flooding operations. Permeability measurements using kerosine, calcium chloride brine, simulated oilfield brine, potassium chloride brine, sodium chloride brine, and distilled water were made on reservoir-rock cores. Clay fractions were separated from sand grains of disaggregated portions of each core sample, and the clay minerals were identified by the differential thermal analysis method. Relations of the permeability to various fluids were developed.

In the early nineties it was observed by several European investigators and by C. S. Rice4 that an explosion could be checked and would not propagate in the parts of a mine where shale or other inert dust was present in large amounts.5 After the disastrous Courrieres explosion in France that killed 1,100 men, coal-dust explosion tests were made in France in 1907 and in Great Britain in 1908 which resulted in the conclusion that if enough incombustible dust were properly spread throughout passageways charged with coal-dust, the propagation of an explosion by the coal-dust could be prevented. In 1908 the Federal government authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and of possible methods of preventing them, with the result that during 1911 the United States Bureau of Mines, after making several tests, suggested that rock-dust be used in gassy or dusty bituminous coal mines. Since that time, experiments and investigations6 have proved conclusively that widespread explosions can be prevented in coal mines by efficient rook-dusting.

Falling asleep at the wheel of a moving vehicle is not only dangerous but avoidable. It is implicated in up to 30% of all road fatalities in general and up to 65% of mining incidents involving haulage trucks. These types of crashes normally result in serious injury and/or fatality due to the lack of breaking that occurs. However, when a 300 tonne haul truck has a sleep related crash it is not only the safety of the driver that has a high price but also the commercial impact on the mines? productivity and efficiency. We have been developing our ASTiD technology which stands for the Advisory System for Tired Drivers to seamlessly integrate in to Modular Mining?s Dispatch system to provide real-time early warning fatigue risk management. The benefits being driver shift optimisation, sustained productivity and of course less accidents. By monitoring the drivers alertness levels in real-time using ASTID, the Dispatcher becomes empowered to make critical, management decisions that will ultimately prevent serious injury or loss of life and the driver gets to stop when he needs to and not just when he is supposed to. This paper shows how this integrated solutions works.
