A B S T R A C T The Los Pijiguaos bauxite is one of the largest accumulations of trihydrate alumina ore recently discovered; it is a plateau type, with no overburden, relatively soft tertiary quartz-bearing bauxite developed on a pre-Cambrian Rapakivi Granite batholith. The deposits are found in the northwestern rim of the Guiana Shield, State of Bolivar, Venezuela, and were discovered in 1976 after a grass-roots exploration campaign. Target areas were mainly selected on the basis of geological and geo¬morpholigcal criteria, guided by correlation with known deposits elsewhere in the Guiana Shield. The vertical. lateritic profile consists of an upper concretionary zone, followed by a mottled zone, a palid zone and finally the weathered rock merging into fresh granite. The upper concretionary zone displays a cellular, pisolitic or spongy texture and contains the following minerals: gibbsite (60-90%),quartz (5-10%), hematite (5-10%), goethite (under 5%), boehmite (traces), kaolinite (traces). The gibbsite content decreases sharply downward from the lower limit of the concretionary zone and the kaolinite and quartz content increases in the underlying mottled zone. The mottled and palid zones display a pseudo rapakivi texture and quartz, kaolinite and mica are the. essential minerals.

Several bauxite residue sands and muds produced by Bayer plants in the U.S. and overseas have been fractionated using dry and wet magnetic separators. The magnetic sand fractions typically contain about 60 wt% iron and the bulk of the radioactivity in this waste. The muds are more difficult to process than the sands, but some fractionation is possible using a combination of flotation and magnetic separation techniques.

Since undergoing a major mill expansion in 1979, Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Limited has successfully operated a somewhat unconventional rod mill/rod mill grinding circuit at its mill in Tungsten, N.W.T., Canada. The concentrator employs two rod mills in series, of unmatched size and horsepower, for production of feed to a gravity (tabling) circuit. Cyclones and screens are closed circuited with the secondary rod mill. Outlined in this paper are the rationale behind, and consequences of operation of this unusual grinding and classification configuration.

Introduction Operation is underway at the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine of the first US longwall panel to be mined under the cooperative agreement between the US Bu¬reau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources. The 244-m (800-ft) wide longwall face is part of a multilift longwall demonstration. A 3-m (10-ft) top slice is being extracted from the 8.5-m (28-ft) coal seam. This occurs in an area of the property where the Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B beds have come together to form one seam. This face, longest ever operated in the US, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. During the first months of its operation, this longwall face has been very productive and safe. Mid-Continent Resources operates two coal mines in the Coal Basin, located in the White River National Forest near Carbondale, CO. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. originally opened this property in 1895, and conducted a small mining operation for 10 years on the north rim of the basin and then abruptly shut down. Mid-Continent began operations in 1956, after the Coal Basin fields had lain idle for about 60 years. Operations commenced at the outcrop of the Coal Basin B bed situated at the 3-km (10,000-ft) elevation. At this time, coal was produced from Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B seams in the area. Since 1981, operations have been centralized at two mines, the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the Dutch Creek No. 2, both located in the center of the basin. Since 1981, Mid-Continent has shifted its emphasis to longwall mining as the primary method of production, and each of these mines is equipped with state-of-the-art longwalls using shields as the method of roof support. A 4-km (13,000-ft) long twin-bore rock tunnel is being driven at a lower elevation of 2.4 km (8,000 ft) to intersect the coal seams at depth, as they dip 12° in a westerly direction. This tunnel will enable the company to reduce costs by replacing trucks with conveyor belt haulage (Fig. 1). Mid-Continent began longwall operations in May 1976 with the US's first modern, mechanized advancing longwall face, using chocks. In August 1978, a second advancing longwall face was started. Results from two faces showed that the mining system could be used effectively to manage the difficult conditions encountered in both the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the L. S. Wood No. 3 mines. Unfortunately, low productivity and high costs plagued the company's advancing faces. The problems resulted principally from major equipment failures, poorly designed chocks and face conveyors, and the lack of an efficient, cost effective system for building packwalls. Flushing of rock between chocks and roof control were also major problems. In Sept. 1979, Mid-Continent and the US Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of mining thick coal seams using the multilift longwall mining method. Two lifts are to be used to mine the 8.5-m (28-ft) thick coal seam in Dutch Creek No. 1 mine. The Bureau provided mining equipment for 180 m (600 ft) of longwall face. This included the shields, face conveyor and drive units, shearing machines, panel belt, and stageloader. As a result of previous experience in advancing longwall mining, Mid-Continent purchased an additional 60 m (200 ft) of face, including roof supports and an additional face conveyor. The authors present laboratory and plant results illustrating the benefits to be gained by using chemical additives, namely flocculants and surfactant dewatering aids, in the Bayer process. Advantages of synthetic flocculants over starch are illustrated in terms of more efficient solid/liquid separation in both the initial settling of blow-down slurries and in the CCD wash train. In addition, it is shown that the use of synthetic flocculants considerably reduce the levels of organic contaminants present in the process liquor. Secondly, very significant improvements in moisture removal were obtained by the application of dewatering aids to hydrate filtration/ washing operations.

The high-rate floc blanket clarification process developed by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa is capable of continuously clarifying gold and uranium pregnant solutions containing 200-2500 mg/L suspended solids to below 25 mg/L solids at an average rising velocity of 8 m/h at the low process cost of R0,001-0,002 per ton of liquid treated. Overall process cost savings are mainly due to increased polishing filtration cycle times.

The technique of linear kriging as a grade estimation method of mining blocks is reasonably established in the mining industry. Because of the nonbias condition imposed in kriging which requires that the kriging weights (?i) add up to one, negative weights are sometimes used in kriging. The use of negative weights is not justifiable from the practical standpoint. Also, negative block grades can be obtained in some extreme situations which makes no practical sense. To guarantee non-negative weights an additional constraint is required in the kriging system of equations. Unfortunately, the nonnegative weight constraint results in a set of non- linear system of equations. In this paper, a derivation of the resulting set of nonlinear equations is presented and a numerical algorithm is developed for the solution of the equations. Because the algorithm developed does not remove negative weights arbitrarily, optimal nonnegative weights are always guaranteed. Results obtained using the developed algorithm were compared with those using the standard linear kriging, in terms of computer time and the estimation results. Both the computer time and the kriging variance were found to be higher with nonnegative constraint, as expected. However, some systematic pattern was observed in the kriged values (i.e., over or under estimation) with or without the nonnegative constraint. The study also demonstrated when one should generally expect negative kriging weights in practice, and what practical impact the negative weights can have on the kriging estimates.

The Duval Corporation Sierrita copper and molybdenum mining complex is located approximately twenty-three miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The original open pit mine, Esperanza, was put into operation in 1958 and utilized one tailings dam until the Sierrita operation began in 1970, and a second pond was started. Both tailings operations continued to be operated separate and independently of each other until 1977, when the Esperanza Mill was temporarily shut down, and the Esperanza Tailings Dam was retired from service. Except for short periods of use, no new tailings were put on the surface. With the reactivation of the Esperanza Mill in 1979, the Esperanza tailings were combined with the Sierrita Mill tailings and put on the Sierrita Dam, leaving the Esperanza Dam in a retired state.

Results of investigations over approximately the last 10 years by the Bureau of Mines and others on technology for recovering cell-grade alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, dawsonitic oil shale, coal ash, and coal shale are reviewed. It is concluded that, although many innovative techniques have evolved from this effort and have been shown to be technically feasible, energy and economic considerations will prevent any of the processes from competing with the Bayer process under normal conditions. Based on the Bureau's experience, some variation of clay-HCI leaching, HC1 gas sparging crystallization has the greatest potential as an alternative to the Bayer-bauxite process.

Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with an area one and three quarter times the size of Texas. Most of the State is desert or semi-desert, and only the southwest corner is heavily populated. The State has a population of one and a half million people, and one million of these live in and around the city of Perth. Perth is located on the narrow Swan Coastal Plain and is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Darling Plateau. The Darling Plateau is an ancient peneplain rising some 300 metres above sea level, and forms an important resource base for the population. The Darling Plateau is old, having been formed some 200 million years ago, and its soils are deeply weathered. The parent materials were granite and gneis which have broken down to form lateritic gravels, overlying dense kaolinitic clays. Some 30 million years ago, in the Tertiary period, a sub - tropical climate prevailed. Appropriate conditions of moisture, temperature and drainage led to extensive laterisation. Some of the laterite contains bauxite of mineable quality. Some 1.9 million hectares of the south-west of Western Australia is covered by eucalypt forests. Results of the common research work of ALUTERV-FKI and RI in field of ore dressing are presented here. Although monohydrate types of bauxites consist of finely dispersed minerals, however, in some cases certain contaminants (carbonates mainly), can be reduced by physical methods before Bayer process. Electronmicroscopy combined with computerized data processing is proven to determine the possibility of beneficiation and to control the different stages of ore dressing. Test results gained by Hungarian and Yougoslavian bauxite samples, contaminated by calcite, dolomite, siderite and pyrite, are discussed. Basic operations were: grinding (mostly dry) and classification, magnetic separation (mostly wet) and selective agglomeration. Only simple processes, having high efficiency and mostly dry ore dressing technique may meet the requirement of economical criteria. 1. Bauxite is currently produced at three centres in Australia: - Weipa in northern Queensland; Gove on the northeastern tip of Northern Territory; and in the Darling Range near Perth, Western Australia. At each of these centres the bauxite is of Tertiary age and occurs as blanket-like, lateritic crusts in which gibbsite is the predominant mineral. Development was essentially in situ although possibly the deposits, particularly at Gove, are in part of transported origin. All of the deposits formed from quartz-rich parent rocks with those at Weipa and Gove being derived from kaolinitic sands while in the Darling Range, granite and other crystalline rocks of Precambrian age immediately underline the lateritic bauxite.

PENNSYLVANIA 16803 To the Editor: With respect to the Fenvessy and Schwab article, I offer the following: As thorough as the study may be, it still has a glaring weakness. The presumption of constant supply in face of falling demand - their "low growth" case - is just wrong. It does not allow for the rapid migration, by transfer and change of major, from former high-demand programs, such as mining, to programs that have more recently obtained the cachet of job security. The figures that are shown for rapid growth in mining engineering enrollments in the period 1970-1981 are, no doubt, correct and reflect a rapid inmigration of students into mining. A similar out-migration, which began in 1982, from mining to other engineering and science disciplines is not factored into their study. Given 1983-84 enrollments, which can already be documented, it is clear that the low-growth case will, by 1985, be 50% or less of 1981. I wish students would pick their majors on the basis of their own individual abilities and interests rather than rushing lemming-like to programs that are reputed to have jobs. In the end, students will have better jobs and careers if their college majors match their talents and we, in the academic side of things, will have a livelier and more dedicated student. Lee W. The article is, unfortunately, inaccurate because of the erroneous assumptions it makes in its basic premises. To cite but two of these, class sizes will not continue at their current level, but will, in fact, alter dramatically as a function of the perceived immediate job market rather than the future trend, so that enrollments are already below those predicted. Secondly, it is patently wrong to assume that everyone who gets a degree in the mining field will continue until retirement to work in that field. People who do not have a job in the industry will get work elsewhere and often do not come back. Others will later move to different areas. My major argument, however, deals with the underlying assumptions and methodology of the survey itself, with the concomitant challenge to the subsequent conclusions. It is no great secret that the technological world is undergoing a dramatic revolution. Computer use is rapidly spreading to the point where the microcomputer will be an integral part of every mine engineer's desk. Such a tool, which for optimal benefit must be operated by knowledgeable mining engineers, will make mining much more of a science than the current level. Manganese silver ores are well known to be refractory towards cyanidation. Various processes have been suggested for improving the amenability of these ores. A sulfurous acid pre-leach is one such process. This paper traces the development and implementation of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process for the retreatment of manganese silver tailings at Tonopah, Nevada. An account of the test work program is presented, followed by a description of the operating plant and specimen metallurgical performance. The paper also summarizes the history of the Tonopah tailings, their mineralogy and makes reference to previous application of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process.

At the Sierrita mine, 40 km (25 miles) south of Tucson, Arizona, Duval Corporation is rapidly gaining operating experience with its new Portable Crushing and Conveying System, (PCCS). As of November 23, 1983, over 4.5 million tons (5.0 million st) of ore have passed through the system. Mining cost per ton for the months of July, August and September was 83% below the average for the first five months of 1983. Although all the cost reductions experienced cannot be attributed to the Portable Crusher, it was a major contributing factor. The Sierrita ore deposit has several natural topographic and geologic conditions which are not favorable to mining. It is not a sidehill deposit and therefore no low-level exit points exist to facilitate truck haulage. The ore is very hard. Quartz diorite, hardest of the three major rock types, averages 172-207 MPa (25-30 000 psi) unconfined compressive strength and may run as high as 345 MPa (50 000 psi). Blasting in this rock produces oversize material which runs approximately 20% 51 centimeters (20 inches). The ore is low grade, averaging slightly better than .30% contained copper and .035% contained molybdenum, with small amounts of silver. These conditions, plus high design production tonnages, make the Portable Crushing and Conveying System (PCCS) practical for Sierrita. Without crushing and conveying, truck haulage would be prohibitively expensive. A typical, October, 1983, ore haul from the bottom of the pit would involve a vertical lift of 260 meters (850 ft) and a horizontal distance of 3 860 meters (12 200 ft) were not in-pit crushing and conveying available. The corresponding cycle time would be nearly 32 minutes.

A resource of 134,400,000,000 tons of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 1,300 square miles vest of Green River, Wyoming (Culbertson, in preparation)(Figure 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6,667,000 short tons (Kostick, 1983), approximately 90 percent of which came from Wyoming trona. This enormous resource occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Creen River Formation (Eocene). The Green River Formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake (Lake Gosiute) that occupied the Green River Basin in south-western Wyoming 38-54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition during which time the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known, of which 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation).

The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

The Fence Lake Project is located in the Salt Lake coal field, an extension of the San Juan Basin. Geologic formations exposed in the Project area range in age from late Cretaceous to Quaternary. Coal is encountered in the Moreno Hill Formation (upper Cretaceous). Salt River Project (SRP) followed the basic textbook approach for the exploration, regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance, detailed surface appraisal and three dimensional sampling (physical exploration). SRP is exploring this property as a potential fuel source for the Coronado Generating Station. Therefore, for the physical exploration stage, the quality sampling program was designed from a utility company viewpoint to determine possible impacts to the Station. Exploration drilling was completed in spring, 1982; September, 1982, and summer, 1984. Engineering, environmental, and land acquisition studies were added in the Summer, 1984 Program to more closely evaluate the potential Fence Lake Project coal supply option for the Coronado Generating Station. Studies, including drilling, are ongoing-at this time.
