The American Borate Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Owens Corning Fiberglas Company under a management contract to the Hanna Mining Company, owns and operates an underground borate mine in Death Valley, California. The mine, named the Billie Mine, is located 24 km (15 miles) southeast of Furnace Creek along Highway 190. The ore body is under Death Valley National Monument with the major portion of the surface facilities located just outside the monument boundary. (See Figure 1.) The Billie Mine produces approximately 227 000 metric tons of crude ore per year. About 65% of finished product is supplied to Owens-Corning, the remainder is sold to other fiberglass producers. Geology The borate minerals in the Billie ore body were deposited in the lower main member of the Furnace Creek Formation, which is Pliocene in age. The ore body is thought to have formed from volcanic springs in or near a small lake basin. The deposit is essentially a limestone breccia that is permeated with borate minerals and surrounded with limey lake bed mudstones and shales. The ore body is mineralized with two main borate ores, colemanite and probertite. A third borate ore, ulexite, mainly occurs in the upper part of the ore body. The original mineral of deposition is thought to have been ulexite. Ulexite is a sodium-calcium borate hydrated with eight molecular waters. Due to heat and pressure from burial by later sediments, the ulexite had water forced out of its structure and recrystallized as probertite. Probertite is another sodium-calcium borate, with five molecular waters. Colemanite formed when surface water seeped into the prober-

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful. The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit Project is a 12 ft. 0 in. inside diameter—15 ft. 4 in. excavated diameter tunnel, 8,300 lf. in length. The tunnel is divided in two parts a 4,460 lf. reach to the West and a 3,770 lf. reach to the East separated by a flow regulation structure in the middle. The project was built for the City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) by the Frank Coluccio Construction Company (FCCC) Seattle, Washington under a $22,600,000.00 contract starting in 1998 and completing the contract in 2000 at a total cost to the City of $25,448,000. An increase of 12.6% from the original contract. The tunnel was constructed in an alluvial sediment that ranges up to 1,500 feet thick. The sediment varies from ?ne silty sand and sandy silt (SM-ML) to coarse sand and gravel (GP-GM) with varying quantities of cobbles and boulders. Most of the tunnel was constructed above the water table although one reach of almost 1,000 lf. had water to above the tunnel crown. The contractor, FCCC, used a Lovat 15 ft. 3 in.900 hp shielded TBM with multiple doors (4) of variable opening to excavate and support the tunnel. Tunnel supports were 5 in. WF 16 lbs. per foot at 4 ft. spacing and4 in. Douglas Fir lagging. Tunnel excavation was worked in 10 hour shifts with additional equipment maintenance and repair on the off time. The original Geotechnical Design Summary Report (GDSR) established a baseline for contractual purposes of slightly over 5 boulders (between 12 in. and48 in.) per foot of tunnel. (Table 1) At the pre-bid conference, three test pits were excavated to approximately tunnel invert, one at each end of the project and one in the middle near the flow regulation structure. The test pits encountered a few boulders but did not seem to support the five boulders per foot (varied from one boulder per foot of tunnel to eight b/lf.). Subsequent to the pre-bid meeting and the test pits, BES issued any addenda which changed the baseline boulder quantity in the GDSR to 1.7 boulders per foot of tunnel (varied from0.2 to 3.5 boulders per foot) a reduction of 67% from the original baseline. It is interesting to note the two separate tunnel reaches and how they were evaluated in the GDSR. Originally the Eastern portion of the work was projected at5.08 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 5.30 boulders per foot of tunnel for a variance of less than 5%. In the revised quantity the Eastern portion was projected at 2.01 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 1.42 boulders

This paper will be concerned with those mineable coal measures at depths necessitating deep mine operations in the range of 200 feet to 800 feet in depth. The area is generally classified as the Southern Illinois Field but more specifically includes that part of the state south of a line extending from St. Louis, Missouri on the west to Vincennes, Indiana, on the east. This embraces an area which presently includes a total of 38 shipping mines and 5 local or truck mines. Of these shipping mines, 22 are deep (shaft or slope) mines and the remaining 16 are strips. The average annual production of the shipping mines is around 29 million tons. The presently classified mineable reserves of the area are estimated at around 70 billion tons.

With increasing interest in the physical cleaning of fine coal, there is a need for extension of the sink-float analysis procedure to finer sizes. Problems arise, however, in ensuring complete dispersion of the particles in the heavy liquids. A procedure has been developed in which surfactants are wed as dispersing agents, and solids concentration is minimized (using a simple formula to estimate the minimum weight needed for statistical reliability). Using centrifuges to increase separation rates and subsieve particle size analysis of the specific gravity fractions, a complete size-specific gravity distribution can be obtained. Analyses have been performed on coal samples as fine as - 10 µm.

The 16th annual Mining Hall of Fame induction banquet will begin with a reception and open house at 5:30p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The six inductees include James M. Gerstley, the only living member, and George O. Argall, Jr.; John F. “Leadville Johnny” Campion; Charles R. Nailler; Edwin N. Pennebaker and Russell L. Wood.

Abstract. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its effort to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, is conducting research on the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica. A system of crushers, screens, and zigzag air classifiers is used to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica ore and from the waste tailings of abandoned mica operations. The plus 0.21-millimeter-size mica is effectively recovered by this method. The mica concentrates produced contain over 90 percent mica. The method recovered up to 78 percent of the mica in the samples. As a dry concentration method, the pneumatic-beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas of limited water resource.

The remarks that follow are based substantially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which has been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1-1/2%. The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present. Most of the rich, readily accessible placers were mined by our forefathers. Current opportunities exist: (1) in remote areas where infrastructure has been absent in the past, or development has been prohibited by adverse ownership - political or commercial; (2) in deposits that could not be mined by equipment available to our forefathers; (3) in deposits unidentified by our forefathers; (4) where the-price-of-product/cost ratio is substantially better than in earlier years; or (5) a combination of those factors. When I entered the placer business in the late 1930s, and subsequently, a prevailing opinion believed that glacial deposits should be avoided as irregular in mineral content and composition, and unrewarding to explore and develop; yet an operator has been mining a fluvio-glacial deposit profitably for the past 17 years. Rich buried placer channels, often called paleo-channels were worked in the last century, generally by hand methods, and under conditions that would be unacceptable today. Exploration and mining equipment now available make some of these channels attractive targets. Well-known examples are in California and Australia. The formation of a commercial placer requires a source of valuable minerals. Above primary deposits, there may be eluvial deposits formed by the erosion of gangue minerals and the concentration "in situ" of valuable minerals. Down slope from these deposits are the hillside or colluvial deposits, and below them are the alluvial deposits of redeposited material. Most of the great placer fields of the world are the result of several generations of erosion and deposition. Well-known examples are in California and Colombia. Gold is a very resistant and malleable material, and gold placers may extend for 64 or 80 km (40 or 50 miles) along a river system. Platinum is less malleable, but is very resistant to disintegration. Diamonds are extremely hard, and (especially gem diamonds) may be found over great lengths of a river system. Cassiterite is less resistant to disintegration, and tin placers seldom extend over two miles without resupply from an additional source or sources of mineralizaton. Tungsten minerals are generally more friable, and within a few hundred yards of the source disintegrate to the point that they are uneconomical to recover. Rutile, ilmenite and zircon placers generally result from the weathering of massive deposits, and may be encountered over extensive areas; most are fine grained and durable. What does a geologist or mining engineer look for in placer exploration? The old adage to look for a mine near an existing mine is still valid. You need a source of valuable mineral. Then you require conditions for concentration, which means a satisfactory gradient and/or other conditions that will permit heavy minerals to settle. Nicely riffled gravel, often called a shingling of the bars, is conducive to placer formation. Coarser gravel is logically associated with coarser gold. Excessive clay and/or high stream velocities in narrow channels can carry gold far downstream and distribute it uncommercially over a large area. When material is extremely fine, in situ weathering and concentration become more important. Placers frequently occur distant from lode mines, and one must remember that in a larger watershed the exceptional floods that occur once in a hundred or a thousand years can move great quantities of material long distances. The carrying power of water is said to vary with the fifth or sixth power of its velocity. I am not ready to disagree with Waldemar Lindgren and accept that many commercial placers are substantially enriched by the chemical deposition of gold from solutions; however, I have seen crystalline gold in clayey material quite distant from known sources of primary gold that is dif-

An extensive program of marked ball wear testing (MBWT), laboratory corrosion studies, and worn ball surface analyses has been used to gain insight about the role of corrosion in the overall wear process. In some environments, localized corrosion is observed; the actual wear mechanisms in such cases are pitting/spalling and abrasion. Factors affecting the occurrence of pitting include the abrasiveness of the ore, corrosivity of the slurry, corrosion resistance of the media, and galvanic coupling effects. Elimination of pitting substantially improves overall wear resistance. When pitting is not observed, the contributions of general corrosion are significantly less.

The Crosstown 7 Collector System, Contract C28G11, is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Waste Pollution Abatement Program. The contract involves the construction of 1.6 km (1 mile) of 3 m (10 ft.) diameter tunnel in soft ground. The tunnel is 10 m (35 Ft.) below surface and passes through a variety of soils. The eastern leg of the tunnel along Bruce Street is mainly in till material, a stiff, relatively dry clay. The northern leg along 16th Street starts in till, and continues in estuarine deposits - moist sticky clay, with intrusions of alluvial sand and gravel. The contract specifications required that the tunnel be constructed either under compressed air or with an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The S. A. Healy Co., the general contractor, chose the latter option. Additionally, a single pass, pre-cast concrete segmental liner was selected as the lining system. The mining machine was manufactured by Lovat Tunnel of Canada and the segments were made by the Sehulster Company of Milwaukee. The use of this combination of machine and lining is relatively new to the United States and this tunnel is the most extensive built to date with a gasketed, segmental single pass lining for transportation of fluids. This paper details the various aspects of the construction of the tunnel and associated shafts.

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. Australia has led the world in bauxite production since 1976, and only the Republic of Guinea has larger bauxite resources. India has a small integrated aluminum industry, and deposits containing more than 1 Gt (billion metric tons) of bauxite were discovered in the 1970's. The Peoples Republic of China has large bauxite resources scattered in several regions, but it is a monohydrate type that is difficult to process for aluminum. Indonesia and Malaysia both have long histories of bauxite mining, and both have limited resources of high-grade bauxite. Districts containing bauxite resources in the 10 Mt to 150 Mt (million metric tons) range are scattered in countries along the eastern rim of the Pacific Ocean, on islands in this ocean, and on the western and northern rims of the Indian Ocean.

A conference on coalbed and coal mine methane was held March 27 and 28, 2000, in Denver, CO. The conference, organized by the Strategic Resource Institute, was attended by leaders in the coal mining and gas energy industry. The conference focused on the recovery of methane from coal beds as an energy resource and the removal and utilization of coal-mine methane (CMM) related to underground coal mining. The two-day conference discussed methane resources around the world, methods of recovery, methane markets, underground coal mining, health and safety issues and environmental issues related to methane. The consensus among the presenters is that the future looks promising for coal bed methane (CBM) and CMM.

"China is rich in tungsten resource, but they are mainly associated minerals. The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work summarized the current situation and the development of flotation reagents, technological process, and mineral processing equipments in China. Fatty acid served as the collector and water glass was the depressant to expand the flotability differences in traditional flotation technology. However the water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend, and the suppressed fluorite was difficult to recover by flotation. Abundant water glass lead to the bad settleability of the tailings and the tail water was difficult to circulate, resulted in serious environmental problems. Recent study proved that the selectivity of benzene armour hydroxyl oxime acid (BAHA) salts was adequate for the separation of tungsten minerals from fluorite, calcite and most silicate minerals without any depressant. By this way, sodium silicate was canceled completely in tungsten flotation, greatly improving the recovery of tungsten and the environmental problems caused by tail water treatment would be solved fundamentally. TUNGSTEN RESOURCES AND DISTRIBUTION IN CHINA China is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves [1]. However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resources had become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Table 1 showed the most large and superlarge scheelite deposits in China. China has more than 40 large and superlarge scheelite deposits and the total metallic deserves is more than 3 million ton [2]. But most of the deposits were low-grade and the associated relationship was complicated. For example, scheelite was usually associated with wolframite, molybonite, bismuthinite, pyrite, fluorite, and calcite in Shizhuyuan and Yaogangxian mine."

The Metals Mining Sector of the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI-MMS) addresses technical drainage-quality issues related to metal mining and related metallurgical operations, for future and active mines, as well as, for historical mines and mining districts. One of the first projects of ADTI-MMS is to develop a handbook describing the best sampling, monitoring, predicting, mitigating, and modeling of drainage from metal mines, pit lakes and related metallurgical facilities based upon current scientific and engineering practices. One of the important aspects of planning a new mine in today’s regulatory environment is the philosophy of designing a new or existing mine or expansion of operations for ultimate closure. The holistic philosophy taken in the ADTI-MMS handbook maintains that sampling and monitoring programs should be designed to take into account all aspects of the mine-life cycle. Data required for the closure of the operation are obtained throughout the mine-life cycle, from exploration through post-closure.

As the basis for the State of Minnesota's Regional Copper-Nickel Study environmental evaluation, hypothetical mine models were developed ranging in ore capacity from 5.35 to 20.00 x 106 mtpy. Open pit and underground mining operations were defined utilizing conventional methods of ore extraction. Processing of the copper-nickel sulfide material involved conventional bulk flotation of the valuable minerals, with maximum water recycle And tailing disposal. Flash smelting and electrolytic refining of the concentrate resulted in 0.10 x 106 mtpy copper plus nickel metal, plus associated cobalt and precious metals. Variations in model parameters allowed environmental trade-offs to be identified.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common problem in different areas with a past history of mining activities, which is characterized by low pH (2-4.5) and significant toxic metals concentration. The main aim of the present work was to perform a process feasibility analysis in order to remove heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu) from AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) in a relatively cheap and environmentally friendly way, by means of electrowinning and biosorption. A first characterization of an Italian AMD sample was performed evidencing a zinc concentration around 2 g/L, cadmium and nickel content of about 4 mg/L, manganese of 85 mg/L and iron 190 mg/L. Electrowinning tests lead to the following metal removal after three hours treatment: Zn 99%, Ni 99.9%, Cd 99.9%, Cu 99%, Mn 87%, Fe 96%. Moreover, an high grade of purity of the metal deposit has been achieved (Zn>95%), as observed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Considering that metals concentration in the effluent was still above legal limits (in particular for Zn, Mn and Fe), a further biosorption treatment was planned in order to produce an effluent fitting environmental limits. Experimental electrowinning tests and literature multimetal column biosorption data have been used in order to perform a preliminary techno-economic feasibility analysis of the process aimed at metal removal from AMD. A treatment cost of about 6.5 ?/m3 AMD has been estimated, for a plant capacity of 10 m3/h AMD inlet flow rate.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Waste solutions from sea water desalination processes are enriched in minerals by a factor of two or three. This suggests that extraction of selected mineral components from the concentrated brine might help pay desalination costs. The possible recovery of gold has received particular mention. Sonstadt, in 1872, reported the gold content of sea water as 65,000 micrograms per cubic meter, or 65,000 parts per trillion. At $35 an ounce, this is equivalent to $0.065 per ton of sea water. Fritz Haber, however, after his abortive venture to restore Post War I Germany to economic health by recovering gold from the sea, concluded the gold content was 4 micrograms per cubic meter. Haber's analysis is equivalent to 0.0004 cent per ton. In the past 10 years, investigators using advanced analytical techniques reported from 4 to 27 micrograms per cubic meter. Our brief experiments to determine a threshhold value for the gold in sea water employed solvent extraction for initial concentration, evaporation of the gold-loaded organic for further concentration, and atomic absorption analysis of the gold in the concentrated organic. Radioactive gold was used as a tracer for monitoring the gold through the concentration and analytical steps. Our method established that sea water contains about 11 parts gold per trillion parts sea water, or 0.001 cent worth per ton. This agrees closely with results of recent studies by other investigators employing ion exchange resins and neutron activation techniques.
