The North American-based mining engineer needs to understand the differences that exist between mechanical mining or boring machines built on this continent and those built in Europe. The differences Ere most clearly seen when machines for large-sized openings--about 15 feet high-are considered. This report will focus on the innovations of European origin. The rock-breaking tool, drag bit, or roller cone that is efficient for a particular project is related directly to the strength of the rock involved. This strength is generally stated in reference to the rock's unconfined compressivee strength in pounds per square inch (psi) although it is well recognized that a rock's shear strength is also important. Compressive strength has been adopted because it is simple to test for and provides a convenient comparison. Table 1 relates cutter type to compressive strength and indicates the general nature of the machine innovation devel¬oped in Europe.

Butler Taconite, operated by the Hanna Mining Company, is an Iron ore pelletizing operation that is located on the Western end of the Mesabi Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota. The operation mines low-grade taconite ore and through primary crushing, two stage grinding, magnetic separation, agglomerating and indurating, produces 2.6 million annual tons of high quality, 66% iron pellets. Mining and stripping is done with 13 - M100 trucks and 5 - 12 cu. yd. shovels. The operating processes in the concentrator and pellet plant are primarily con¬trolled through a centralized control room and monitored by a PDP l140 computer. During 1969 and 1970, a re-organization of the Company took place. Through this re-organization, each mine unit was analyzed and studied to determine the proper staffing of the internal departments. At this time, it was decided to continue with further detailed studies of the Maintenance Department with the intent to reduce maintenance costs. Maintenance costs at the time of the re-organization were 38.6% of the total mine operating cost. The preliminary study indicated that the Maintenance Department had a system of maintenance, as a matter of fact, it had a separate system in each sub-maintenance division and in some of the sub-divisions each foreman had a system of his own. Therefore, from the data collected, it was decided to develop one system of maintenance that could be utilized throughout the entire operation. To determine the type of system suitable to all phases of the operation, detailed time and method studies were conducted. All types of maintenance tasks performed at the operation were studied. The data collected was analyzed and the recommended improved methods were reviewed with the Maintenance Superintendent and his staff. The new improved methods that were accepted as feasible, were introduced into the system immediately.

The Phelps Dodge Corporation's Morenci Concentrator includes facilities for coarse crushing, fine crushing, grinding, flotation, tailing, disposal, concentrate filtering, and drying. The Morenci Concentrator daily throughput is in excess of 60, 000 tons. The ore milled is mainly a medium-hard monzonite porphyry in which the principal sulfide minerals are chalcocite and pyrite. The ore is transported by rail from the Open Pit Mine to the primary crushing plant located at the concentrator site. Ore is side-dumped from 80¬ton railroad cars into a sixty-inch gyratory crusher. The ore is then conveyed to a. 12, 000 ton coarse ore storage bin. Fine crushing is accomplished by four parallel lines of conventionally stacked crushers in open circuit. Each unit consists of one seven-foot standard cone followed by two seven-foot shortheads. Ti% product of the fine crushing plant is distributed by two tripper cars across a fine ore storage bin. The crushed ore is then fed by variable speed belt feeders into thirty parallel, single stage, closed circuit grinding units. Each of the 30 grinding units consists of one 6' x 23' conditioning drum, one 10' x 10' ha l mill and two 54" duplex spiral classifiers as principal equipment. The dry ore is fed into the conditioning drum with water to dilute the ore to a slurry of approximately 78% solids by weight. An aqueous solution of ammonium sulfide is also added to the conditioning drum. The ammonium sulfide primarily acts as a sulfidizing agent. The ore slurry containing the naturally occurring sulfide copper minerals and the sulfidized copper minerals discharges into the feed scoop box of the ball mill, where milk of lime, collector and-.dilution water are added. The ball mill product slurry is gravity fed: to the classifier pool where water is added to obtain the desired classifier overflow product

At East Union, Knox County, Maine, near the shore of Crawford Pond, an outcrop of basic rock has been known for more than a century. The occurrence has been regarded as an unusual type of peridotite-pyroxenite, containing disseminated and massive pyrrhotite with nickel, copper and cobalt in recoverable amounts. From the outcrop, the sulfide body had been mapped more or less continuously for a distance of two miles through geophysical methods of several kinds. This paper describes the methods in sufficient detail to evaluate their significance. A core drilling program has con- firmed the location of the conductor and offers a positive means of correlating the geophysical measurements with the physical properties of the ore body. The history of the exploration offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the method of multiple geophysical methods.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. The Broken Aro project is associated with a 1910 abandoned underground mine complex that has been discharging aeid mine drainage from entries, seeps and springs. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources(ODNR), R&F Coal Company (R&F) and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved with this unique project that will remine the abandoned underground complex and install a mine seal constructed of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. The goal of the project is to eliminate or reduce the acid mine drainage that is discharging into the watershed. This paper discusses remining, installation of the FGD mine seal, government financed reclamation projects and future application to active and abandoned mining sites.

A filter consisting of a synthetic fibrous material has been determined to be a viable alternative to the wire mesh panels currently used in irrigated filter dust collection systems. An extensive laboratory investigation of the material showed that it removed a higher percentage of both respirable coal and quartz dust from the air entering a collector than did the flat and pleated wire mesh panel designs. This improvement in dust collection efficiency reduced the amount of coal and quartz dust discharged from the collector exhaust by approximately 44%. Since continued exposure to excessive levels (>5%) of respirable quartz dust presents a severe health hazard, this alternative filter medium could be of use to those mines required to comply with more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

The size and capacities of commercially available units and operating data comprise the scope of the paper. Two cemented paste backfill (CPB) formulations containing pyritic tailings were leached in deionized water in flooded and alternating air-flooded environments and in a simulated acid rock drainage-type (ARD) solution. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), solid phase chemistry and acid-base accounting measurements documented the weathering characteristics of the CPB samples. Short-term exposures of the portland-CPB samples preferentially dissolved the cement binder to a greater extent than slag-Portland CPB mistures. In all cases, the added neutralizing potential provided to backfill by cement was short-lived and insufficient to neutralize the acid generating potential of the mixture.

What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral-rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind."

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

This project includes the excavation and concrete lining of approximately 18 900 m (62 000 ft) of 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnel for the Los Angeles MTA. The project required that four soft ground headings be excavated from a single shaft located near the mid point of the tunnels. The tunnels were classified "gassy" during the excavation phase. Because of the contract schedule requirements and the limited urban work site available, many logistical problems had to be overcome during the project while excavation was accomplished at a record setting pace. Some unique project features include the muck handling system and an access shaft using a high strength tieback support system. In order to accomplish the work, an extensive effort to plan and construct the main work site was required.

Though most porphyry-molybdenum deposits lend themselves to various reserve estimating techniques, still there must exist the constant effort to not merely obtain an estimate but rather to obtain the best estimate. To answer the challenge of a complete ore reserve estimation, one must attack the problem with the purpose of obtaining the results closest to reality. What we wish to determine is simple: metric tons (short tons), grade, and kilograms (pounds) of molybdenum contained. In order to effectively accomplish this task, further consideration must be given to the ease of using the information obtained and its inherent reliability. The only known method for ore reserve estimation that supplies the needed results along with its distribution and a measure of confidence provided by sound mathematical backup is geostatistics. The following review is an example of geostatistical application of an ore reserve estimate at the AMAX Henderson mine demonstrating technique, viability, and usefulness of results.

The performance characteristics of a multigravity separator for the recovery of heavy minerals of lead, zinc, copper and silver from a lead rougher-flotation concentrate were studied. Factorially designed experiments were carried out on three operating variables, i.e., the amount of wash water, the drum inclination and the drum rpm, of a multigravity separator. The experiments were carried out at two levels of each variable. With the experimental data, regression equations were developed for different metal grades and recoveries. The analysis revealed that drum speed has a major influence in determining the heavy-metal grade and recovery. Drum inclination is the next most important variable, with the amount of wash water being the least important. A concentrate containing 40% lead, 9.4% zinc, 1.5% copper and 1,400ppm silver was obtained with recoveries of 74.8%, 65.9%, 64.1% and 53.2%, respectively. Finally, the predicted values of grades and recoveries at intermediate levels are compared to actual experimental data to test the validity of the equations developed.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner being considered for installation at Sunshine Precious Metals Inc. 's Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause-and-effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences are useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

Monitoring devices have been installed at several mine sites to assess the potential for the development of acid rock drainage (ARD) in waste rock, spent ore and tailings material. In addition, instrumentation has been designed for monitoring changes in water quality in pit lakes. These devices monitor temperature, oxygen, water movement and water chemistry in the waste rock pile. This information can be used to evaluate the current and future ARD risks and the effectiveness of caps and covers. The information can also be used in the design of other reclamation strategies that limit ARD development. The instrumentation includes nested thermistors and oxygen sensing ports, neutron access tubes, heat dissipation units (HDUs) and lysimeters. Many of the monitoring devices can be linked to a data logger and telemetry systems, enabling monitoring data to be downloaded from the office.

The P/B collision and attachment interactions in fine particle flotation have been quantitatively analyzed. New models for attachment probability and kinetics of ‘true flotation’ have been developed. The results are given for both a single bubble and a bubble swarm. The mechanism of the attachment event is also examined. It is shown that (i) impact collision mechanism and rolling mechanism can be ignored in actual fine particle flotation and sliding mechanism is of importance for attachment of particle onto the bubble surface (ii) the attachment probability of fine particles is independent of bubble size and determined by the kinetic measure induction time of hydrophobicity. The theoretical predictions are also compared with the experimental data.

The specific lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh coalbed, highly resistive limestone and sandstone units with relatively shallow overburden, prevent the use of any predictive method as developed for European conditions. This paper describes the development of a subsidence precalculation methodology suitable to the mining-geological conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field. It has been found that due to lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh coalbed the subsidence coefficient varies within the area of the subsidence trough. This is different from the European conditions where the subsidence coefficient is considered to be a constant. The effects of lithology, in-the form of a variable subsidence coefficient, have been separated for each test site by introducing a correlation between hypothetically homogeneous overburden and existing lithological conditions, while providing for different mining conditions. Field data from eleven Bureau longwall panel studies were used in the regression analysis. For each panel the characteristics of the variability of the subsidence coefficient along individual profile lines were defined. Regression analysis of the subsidence coefficients from all test sites on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation with a coefficient of correlation of 0.9999. All sensitivity tests have shown good results.
