INTRODUCTION This chapter will discuss, both from fundamental and practical points of view, the flotation of non-sulfide min- eral s. The flotation characteristics of silicates, salt-type minerals, oxides and coal will be reviewed. Dup- lication of the thorough and excellent presentations by many authors is not intended and a comprehensive list of references is included. GENERAL PRINCIPLES Collectors for Non-Sulfide Minerals : All minerals, with only a few exceptions are readily wetted by water, that is, they are said to be hydrophilic. The purpose of a collector is to coat the mineral surface and render it hydrophobic, preferring an environment of air over an environment of water. Relative to sulphide minerals, the non- sulfides are more naturally hydrophilic and therefore, require a collector with a greater chain length. This is accomplished by using a collector which has a proportionally longer hydrocarbon chain. Both anionic and cationic flotation collectors are used in non- sulfide flotation. Anionic Collectors. These are collectors which ionize in solution to give a negatively charged radical. They have the general structure R-A, where R is a hydrocarbon having 8 or more carbon atoms and A is a hydrogen or an alkali metal. The most common collectors in this group are fatty acids which could have saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chains. Such chains may be straight or branched. The configuration of the chains affects their solubility in water and their adsorption characteristics. In general, as the chain length increases the adsorption and the collecting power increases. However, it should be noted that the solubility decreases. The solubility of unsaturated chains is greater than that of saturated fatty acids because double or triple bonds are polar and thus attract water molecules. Solubility data for collector metal salts, even though important for a proper understanding of flotation are not available for all collector systems. Solubilities and structures of different fatty acids are reported by Fuerstenau (1982). Values for the solubility products of fatty acid salts selected from a paper by Du Rietz (1958) are given in Table 1.

The Brunswick No. 12 Deposit is a large polymetallic massive sulphide deposit, occurring in Ordovician age rocks of the Tetagouche Group. Silver is contained within the sulphide zones and economically it is the second most important commodity produced. Brunswick is one of the largest silver producers in Canada. The distribution of silver within the mine is presented, with examples from various levels. The concentration of silver can be shown to be related to both stratigraphy and structure. The mineralogy of silver in mill products is also presented.

The solvent extraction process as it applies to the recovery of metals from solutions on a comnercial basis is described. The four types of classes of sol vent extraction reagents are explained: 1) solvation, 2) acidic, 3) ion-pair, and 4) chelation, and examples of each type of reagent system are given. The uranium and copper extraction examples, using the ion-pair and the chelate reagent types respectively, are presented in greater detail to illustrate the more subtle aspects of reagent evaluation and selection. Practical experiences in the laboratory and at some operating plants are a1 so discussed.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. Studies have been carried out to optimize the VCR's mining sys- tem on the basis of synthetic analysis at Fankou Pb-Zn mine in Southern China. The synthetic e- valuation method is proposed for selection of mining alternatives and stope dimension optimization techniques. Theoretic calculation and computer optimization of the fragmentation of rock blasted by multispherical explosive charges are discussed. The mathematical and optimal fragmentation models are built. The optimum model is built for the main mining operations such as drilling, blasting and haulage. Lt can be used to evaluate VCR?s mining projects, select mining parameters and provide design fundations. From the point of view of system research on the geomechanical process, stoping technological process and benefit, the complex method of optimization is proposed for VCR's mining. Using computer simulation, based on this model, the optimal parameters are established and analysed. An effective approach is provided for research on the mining method optimization and getting better economical benefits from the application and improvement of VCR's method.

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. The inclusion of a new term "planned subsidence" in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977 has lead the U.S. coal mining industry into a new aspect of engineering: subsidence planning. Subsidence planning has necessitated the integration of geotechnical, civil, and mining engineering disciplines. Although much of the foundation and application work has been completed, subsidence planning is still a developing area. This paper discusses the application of subsidence planning in several brief case studies (a high voltage transmission tower, a sewage treatment plant, and a slurry impoundment), emphasizing the risk assessment aspects necessary to account for some of the uncertainties that may exist.

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Introduction Project scheduling . . . . • What is it? • Why is it done? • Who does it? • How is it done? • When is it done? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this paper. It is intended that by exploring these questions, an understanding of project scheduling, its purpose and benefits can be achieved. The purpose of this article is not to describe in detail "how to schedule", but rather to give an overview of the scheduling function on a project. A successful scheduling effort is dependent upon the people responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the schedule, and the tools and procedures that are used. These three elements are integral components of project scheduling. What is it? A schedule is the integration of network relationships, resource constraints and the calendar. The schedule identifies when the activities "will" be done, while the network states when they "must" be done. Networking techniques are the most widely accepted scheduling tool for complex projects. The benefit of the network is the simplicity in illustrating, presenting and analyzing the dependency relationships of a project. The logic network is the foundation of the schedule. When calendar dates are applied to the logic network, it becomes a schedule which provides the basis for evaluation of project status, forecasting the occurrence of events and controlling the project. The sequence of activities that requires the longest time to complete determines the overall duration of the schedule. This longest sequence of activities is called the "critical path". The "critical path method" (CPM) is used to describe this particular schedule network methodology. The two common conventions of CPM networks are the "arrow diagram met hod" (ADM) and the "precedence diagram method" (PIM). There are arguments in favor of each of these two methods, and usually the one that is used is a matter of personal preference, project directive or corporate procedure.

Based on current sedimentation theory an on-line thickener model was developed and coupled with an extended Kalman Filter to obtain additional information such as the compression zone level and concentration, a corrected underflow concentration, the inventory, and some rheological information. The on-line model was installed and tested for robustness for periods up to three days in an industrial environment giving good results. Emphasis was given to signal processing and selecting the appropriate input variables for filtering. The analysis of the thickener from a phenomenlogical point of view provides for better operation, establishes the limiting operating conditions, and assists in the design of control strategies.

Hydraulic powered supports have been employed in the U. S. longwall mining for the last two' decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. Many questions remain unanswered. To address the problems, field investigations were conducted from 1980 to 1984 in seven longwall faces (1-10)(Table 1). Some of the findings have been reported by Peng and Chiang (11). The basic geological conditions of these panels are listed in Table 2. The mining equipment used in these longwall panels are listed in Table 3. Instrumentation and Observation Programs Two events were generally instrumented: one was the hydraulic leg pressures of the powered supports, and the other was the canopy and base plate load distributions.

INTRODUCTION Most metallic minerals and some industrial minerals have a relatively high specific gravity and most have at one time or another been concentrated by gravity methods. The principles of gravity concentration are straightforward, well documented and easy to understand, but in practice there are many pitfalls that await the engineer in the development of an integrated flowsheet. Gravity concentration equipment has a long history of use and there is a great diversity available. The equipment is capable of treating material over a broad size range, only falling off in efficiency in the very fine sizes. Gravity concentration is also inexpensive, generally free of environmental problems, and commercial equipment can process large tonnages of ore with a minimum of capital cost. As might be expected of an efficient and low cost process, the bulk of the tonnage quickly and inexpensively. Another obvious application is treating mineral deposits such as hematite and manganese ores that are sufficiently liberated after a minimum of crushing to allow production of a coarse concentrate that will meet market specifications. Except for hand picking and mechanical sorting, there is no competing process on coarse size material. Conversely, it is sometimes obvious that gravity concentration does not warrant consideration. Examples are ores that require very fine grinding to attain liberation, for ores where the minerals of interest have a gravity similar to the gangue, and ores that are strongly magnetic. INTRODUCTION Since the nineteen fifties, process engineers have been seriously concerned with process models for various purposes (1,2,3). Models serve as subroutines to mathematical flowsheets which simulate circuits of interest. Simulators can serve to increase process know- ledge, assess circuit performance, investigate flowsheet modifications, evaluate new flowsheets, perform off-line optimization, and compare alternative control strategies. This chapter describes a methodology to develop a simulator of a bulk Cu-Mo circuit comprised of roughers, scavengers and 3 stages of cleaning. The simulator was employed to evaluate the influence of water addition at circuit points and to estimate the optimal number of cells for each stage in the circuit. DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the Brenda Mines Ltd. (located near Peachland, B. C.) bulk Cu-Mo flotation circuit as simulated prior to an expansion/renovation which involved the installation of large, new flotation cells. Referring to the flowsheet, feed to rougher cells includes fresh feed, scavenger concentrate and 1st cleaner tailing. Rougher con, 1st cleaner (sect ion 2) con and 2nd cleaner tailing are fed to 1st cleaners (section 1). 1st cleaner (section 1) concentrate and 3rd cleaner tailing serve as 2nd cleaner feed, while 2nd cleaner concentrate is fed to the 3rd cleaners which produce a final bulk concentrate. Table 1 lists cell types and specifications important to the circuit. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS To develop flotation cell models a systematic procedure was employed (4). This involves the selection of responses and factors, proposing models to be fitted, the acquisition of raw data, the statistical adjustment of raw data, fitting models to adjusted data and testing the adequacy of fitted functions. Responses and Factors Responses of interest included recoveries, concentrate grades and concentrate solids/water flow rates for each stage. Factors that influence these responses, such as reagent addition rates, air flow rates to cells, solids and water flow rates to stages and feed grades were not manipulated during the sampling period. THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. This study deals with the development and utilization of computer models for evaluating the extent to which variability of raw material grades can be reduced from the deposit to the processing plant. The specific case of a cement works is examined. The deposit and the elementary quarring operations were modeled for the medium and long-term planning of production with the objective of predicting grade variability of the flow stream in time. The feeds inferred from previous modellings were used for simulating storage operations. In particular, the storage process (linear stockpile, as an alternative, blending from various heaps) was modelled in order to select the main parameters of the process to minimize grade variations of the feed to mill. The ways followed for modelling the prehomogenization process are described. The homogenization performance and efficiency in the silo stage has also been studied and an estimate made of the distribution of residence time on the basis of input and output sampling.

INTRODUCTION Due to the current depressed state of the mining industry, many mining companies have been forced to operate at less than maximum capacity. This paper will describe how the AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill near Empire and Parshall, Colorado respectively have utilized operations scheduling and budgeting to achieve production targets at minimum operating costs The AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill have been operating most recently at approximately sixty percent of maximum capacity. OPERATIONS SCHEDULING Production Targets. The production targets are tons, operating days, tons per opera- ting day, head grade, recovery, and pounds of molybdenum. One specific objective of operations scheduling is to meet the production target for pounds of molybdenum. Present market conditions dictate that production be adjusted to match sales of molybdenum. Over-production and creation of molybdenum inventories is unacceptable. In summary, the product ion target for pounds of molybdenum must be met, but not exceeded. Capacity. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage open crushing circuit capacity is 48,000 dry short tons per day. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage semi-autogenous primary grinding mill circuit capacity is 38,000 dry short tons per day. All other AMAX Henderson Mi 11 circuits such as rougher flotation, regrind, cleaner flotation, lead leach, filtering, drying and concentrate handling are sized to accommodate the 38,000 dry short tons per day and pro- ducts from same. The tailing delivery system is designed to accommodate tailing from a 38,000 dry short tons per day operation. Constraints. One mill production scheduling constraint is that the mill operating schedule must be the same as mine production, ore haulage and crushing. There is a total crushed ore stockpi1e storage capacity of 240,000 dry short tons. This breaks down to 60,000 dry short tons of crushed ore over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. However, there is only approximately 10,000 dry short tons of live crushed ore available over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. Statistical variability in rock strength can be evaluated by rapid, inexpensive ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements, an important consideration since rational probabilistic design in rock is often hampered by the cost of obtaining sufficient strength data. Experimental ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements on a set of 96 limestone specimens showed two distinct statistical populations. Both populations followed Weibull distributions, with flexural strength distributions paralleling pulse velocity distributions. Thus, experimental results suggest that strength variability may be predicted from a few rationally selected strength measurements and several ultrasonic tests. The correspondence between strength and velocity may then be used to develop an experimental transformation function, allowing the development of a statistical distribution function for strength based on the known statistics of velocity. Comparison of experimental groups with full sets of corresponding strength1 velocity data showed the technique offers a fairly accurate description of the statistics of strength.

The productivity and fuel efficiency of iron-ore blast furnace operations has greatly increased in recent times. These improvements, particularly to the Japanese steel industry, have primarily arisen from process engineering studies of the blast furnace and associated operations such as sintering. The development of fluxed sinter based on iron-ore fines reacted to produce highly reducible, low slag sinters has contributed further to a reduction in fuel requirements. The Pilbara province of Western Australia is a significant source of these iron-ore fines supplied to the international market. Increasingly, this market is being offered high quality ores from other foreign sources. To technically assist companies in improving the processing efficiency of ores, and to improve the technical marketing of ores by modelling the processing characteristics of Australian/international ore blends, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) is actively assisting the industry by researching the general theme of 'iron ore from mine to metal in this paper we outline progress towards a numerical description of: a. ore deposit classification. b. Degradation during transport. c. Direct reduction of iron ore. d. Liquid bath ore reduction/smelting. e. Industrial sintering.

Flotation circuits of a range of complexity are in use for a large number of ores. Since each ore is different and end-product quality requirements are not necessarily the same, circuit configurations of varying complexity are designed. How- ever, certain basic types of circuit configurations can be identified based upon the flotation behavior of the ores. These basic types can be combined to develop the specific f lowsheet configurations for a given ore. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of basic flowsheet configurations. Examples of the flowsheet configurations for a number of specific ores bearing different minerals are then described.
