The pit slope angle dictates the economics as much as the depth of the pit. Steeper slope provides more ore reserves, at the same time, the steeper slope presents higher probability of instability and associated maintenance problems. While large open pit mines mostly belonged to nonferrous metals in the past, other mines are becoming deeper as the mine economics permits deeper mine operations, Such minerals include coal, uranium, phosphate, and others. There are some basic differences between an open pit slope and slopes that are encountered in usual civil engineering work such as dam embankments and highway cuts (Figure 1). The stability of the civil engineering slope changes continuously with time due to ground-water movements, weathering, etc. But the stability of the open pit slope (Figure 2) changes more drastically day-to-day or even hour-to-hour, These changes occur because not only is the slope geometry being continuously changed by the mining operation, but also different geology and geologic structures are being exposed on the slope. Even when a particular slope area is not presently being mined, excavation in adjacent areas can affect the general condition of that slope area. A pit will experience some slope failures during its life.

This presentation in the open pit session deals with the development of a phosphate rock strip mine by CF Industries, Inc., a company that does not presently mine in the Central Florida Phosphate District. Land acquisition, engineering, financing and environmental permitting activities were begun in early 1975; site preparation, environmental monitoring and dragline construction began in mid-1975. The operation is due on-stream in late 1978. The reserve acquisition, permitting, and financing could each easily be developed into a separate paper of interest. Each, however, has been covered before for other mining ventures with similar capital and environment requirements. For that reason, I have chosen to discuss what CF Industries, Inc. is, why it is entering this new sec-tor of the agricultural chemicals business, and, to keep at least some technical basis, what design modifications are possible when the total mine output is used captively and it is unnecessary to have the flexibility to meet the numerous transportation and customer specification considerations. In an attempt to show the size and complexity of the CF organization, a brief description of existing facilities should help show why the big interest in mining phosphate rock.

The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.

Since the late 60's, planners at American Natural have known that natural gas supplies from traditional sources will be insufficient to maintain a consistently high level of service in the near future. This dwindling of traditional gas reserves will force American Natural and other gas companies to seek new and more exotic sources of supply. In recent years a number of alternative supply sources were considered, including arctic gas, LNG, and SNG based on naptha, LPG and coal feedstocks. Several combinations, all of which included SNG from coal were selected as the most suitable alternative sources of gas supply for American Natural, and thus our company embarked on the formation of a coal gasification project in the early 70's. Work began with the evaluation of available coal supplies in the United States in late 1970. Western North Dakota was selected for several reasons: large contiguous reserves of lignite were available near the surface, similar to German brown coal for which the Lurgi gasification process was originally developed; the conditions for land reclamation in the area are favorable; and the people in the area have a positive attitude toward well ordered development.

Introduction Improvements in the process of rock excavation by blasting involves better control of one or more phases of the fracture process immediately after detonating the ex- plosive charge. Total control of the process involves individual control of (1) The number of fracture planes. (2) The crack initiation sites. (3) The direction of crack propagation (usually radial). (4) The stress field driving the fracture front. Fracture plane control is usually accomplished today by using the smooth wall blasting method; however, investigations by the authors (1) indicate several areas where this method could be improved. These improvements include: a) generation of stress concentration factors at the location of the initiation sites; b) protection of the remaining region of the borehole wall to inhibit initiation of any cracks not associated with the fracture plane and fragmentation pattern; c) limit peak detonation pressures to avoid borehole crushing and maintain by stemming residual gas pressure in the bore- hole during the crack propagation period. This paper describes experiments con- ducted with a charge holding device fabricated from thin-wall steel tubing which was partially slit at fracture locations. The tube lined the bore-hole in laboratory tests to simulate smooth wall blasting. Results showed close control could be achieved relative to both the number and the location of the fracture initiation sites.

The use of standard dense-media cyclones is well known, as they have been in use for many years. They are especially well suited for operating at low separating densities and for treating difficult coals containing a high percentage of near-gravity at the point of separation. Very few modifications of the basic design have ever been made. The author recently, however, has been interested in the development of a new type of dense-media cyclone that has been produced in Japan. He has observed the testing of this unit and has collected much data which he feels should be of considerable interest to coal preparation engineers. He feels that this unit, called the Swirl Cyclone, may be of substantial value as an alternate to the standard cyclones. It is certainly worthy of further investigation. There has been relatively little written in English-language publications on the Swirl Cyclone. It was briefly described at the Fifth International Coal Preparation Congress. I It has been described in a general manner by the author in two prior publications. 2, 3 This paper proposes to describe this device in more detail and at the same time submit technical data illustrating its wide characteristics.

In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica 'and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

Since our time is very limited, I would like to relate to you as best as I can a few important areas that I think may be helpful. 1.) The Real Difference between Dense Phase and Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveying: Within the many variations of so called Dense Phase conveying, it is often difficult to determine to what degree a system is Dense Phase or if, in fact, it is a Dense Phase system at all. A system that appears and is generally known to be Dense Phase can under certain operating conditions perform as a Dilute Phase system. If, for instance, a high pressure system, which is generally a Dense Phase system, operates at 60 PSIG, say 4 atmospheres, utilizes enough air volume, the conveying velocity will easily exceed the normal design velocity of a typical Dilute Phase system. Now, on the other hand, a low pressure system which we will term a Dilute Phase system, operating at 15 PSIG; say 1 atmosphere, can convey a given product at well below the saltation velocity, like a Dense Phase system.

Ideally, mill circuits should be controlled so that excessive random disturbances are reduced in frequency and amplitude. It is difficult to derive an objective measure of the effectiveness of any chosen control strategy. Often, the response of the circuit to pulse or sinusoidal disturbances is used as a measure of the effectiveness of control, but this is not adequate in many circumstances because such disturbances bear little resemblance to those that occur in practice, and such an approach cannot be easily related to the profitability of the reduction process. A superior approach appears to be the application of the theory of stochastic processes. This theory permits both real process disturbances to be modelled accurately, and useful objective functions for control to be derived. A test of the usefulness of stochastic theory in mill control was made on the gold ore milling circuit shown in Figure 1. This circuit was fed with an ore which had a liberation characteristic such as that shown in Figure 2. It is simple to show that, for such a liberation characteristic, the recovery of valuable mineral will vary as the standard deviation of the particle mass-size distribution varies even though the mean particle mass-size is kept constant. Similarly it may be shown that excessive perturbations in the circulating load in a milling circuit such as that shown in Figure 1 can affect liberation. Figure 3 shows how, as the cyclone feed density increases and the sump water addition decreases at constant sump level, the cyclone operation becomes unstable and the discharge "ropes? with a consequent catastrophic coarsening in product size. By minimising the variance of the circulating load it is possible to reduce the probability of initiating instabilities of this nature.

Commercial development of the mineral resources of southwestern Missouri began about 1850 and spread into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, forming the Tri-State Mining District with Joplin as the urban center (fig. 1). The value of the Tri-State mineral production from 1850 to 1950 exceeded one billion dollars, and until 1945 the region was the world's leading producer of lead and zinc concentrates, accounting for one-half of the zinc and one-tenth of the lead produced in the United States (Gibson, 1972 1). By 1950 most of the rich ores had been extracted, and mining and milling operations declined during the 1950's and ceased in the 1960's. The sulfide minerals, mainly galena and sphalorite, were mined from cherty limestones at depths of 25 to 75 m (meters). Crude ores were brought from the mines to the surface where they were milled into lead and zinc concentrates. , Barren rock was discarded in piles while the ore-bearing rock was crushed and ground into fine gravel. The minerals were separated from the rock by a jigging process and the tailings were skimmed off and discarded in large piles. Ground-water flooding of the mines was controlled by constant pumping. When pumpage declined in the 1950's and 1960's tile abandoned mine drifts and shafts filled with water. At present (1977) numerous tailings piles and flooded mines remain as visible evidence of the mining era and as a threat to the quality of ground and surface waters of the area. In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Ozark Gateway Council of Governments made a study of the effects of the mines and tailings piles on water quality in the Missouri part of the Tri-State District. The study area covers approximately the southwestern quarter of Jasper County, an area of about 725 km2 (square kilometers), and is bounded by long 94 o 15' w.' and the Missouri-Kansas state line, and lat 37 o 15 N., and the Jasper-Newton County line.

Flotation of the carbonate, oxide and silicate minerals of copper (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla) has been the subject of much research in recent years, but few effective solutions to this problem have been found. With decreasing reserves of sulfide minerals, the economic recovery of these "oxides" appears to be an important source of copper for the future. Xanthates have been known for many years to be malachite collectors (1), but only at very high dosages, or at lower dosages following activation of the mineral by sulfide ion. Dewitt and Batchelder (2, 3) found that chelating agents such as certain oximes were collectors for malachite and azurite, but also required high reagent dosages. Fuerstenau (4) has suggested, for example, that potassium octylhydroxamate may be an effective collector for malachite, On the other hand, Balberyszski (5) has found that oxide minerals may be completely sulfidized at high temperatures with gaseous sulfur or H2S, and then floated with conventional collectors. None of the above approaches appear to offer an economically effective method for the direct flotation of these oxide minerals.

Central America is graduating this year into large scale mining with the start up of Inco's multi-million dollar nickel laterite processing plant in Guatemala. In the other extreme of the Isthmus in Panama Texas Gulf Sulphur is doing check diamond drilling and foundation test drilling at the Cerro Colorado copper porphyry. The higher price of gold and silver has spurred development and exploration of several small precious metal mines. The purpose of this presentation is to make a brief resumé of the most important mines operating in the area and a list of significant exploration projects. Also, tables will be shown to compare mining codes and taxes. Unfortunately these tables lack information on Panama. Before starting I like to express my appreciation to Kennecott Copper who permitted the use of some of the data compiled by the author on their behalf during the year 1975. Other persons which did not want to be named also have my gratitude.

During design of a 550-foot rectangular shaft in alluvium, lateral support within the excavation was an anticipated construction problem. Actual experience showed that the nearly 9 x 14 foot excavation required no lateral support. A strain measurement program con- current with construction and for a 9-month period following completion of the shaft detected only minor strains. Shaft design included consideration of available geological information. Site exploration included a 754-foot drill hole, cored at selected intervals, and a suite of geophysical well logs. Generalized physical properties of the alluvium were developed from laboratory core testing. An elasto-plastic, finite element computer program (DAHLKE) developed by the Spokane Mining Research Center U.S. Bureau of Mines, has been recently used to analyze the behavior of the alluvium around the shaft. Analysis showed that yielding first develops in the shaft corners and progressively expands into the wall zones around the shaft as loading increases. Gradual growth of a plastic zone progressed outward from the excavation boundary at increasing loads but had limited extent and was surrounded at all stress levels by an infinite elastic zone. This design review, aided by computer analysis, confirmed that the shaft would have been considered theoretically stable as designed.

This paper is written primarily from the standpoint of the miner and consumer of Missouri fireclays in refractory products, principally firebrick used in the linings of blast furnaces, hot metal transfer cars, the recuperators of glass melting tanks, and other allied uses involving contact with liquid metals and reactive slags. For these uses the manufacturing plant requires forecast of certain physical characteristics, as well as chemical characteristics, of the raw clays as a determination of practicability of mining, treatment such as pre -firing or calcining, and final usage area. These methods and results may leave something to be desired from an academic view, but are used my operation as an on-running guide to seeking and mining raw material. The high quality fireclays of Missouri are generally differentiated by the user as the softer, somewhat plastic, "bond" clays and the so-called flint clays suitable for a fired or unfired aggregate portion of a brick composition. The semi-plastic "bond" clays are mined in a producing area of northeast Missouri including Montgomery, Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, and Lincoln counties. In this geographic area the clays are the members of the cheltenham formation and occur in rather large lenses in which the usable members may approach 15 meters in thickness and an area of 6o to 8o acres. Overburden is dependent on the surface topography and, in our operations, varies from 8 meters to 25 meters. It can be up to 36 meters in the prairie uplands, but this is rarely strip mined. There was former mining by shaft and drift methods in which the overlying coal was also worked. These clays are primarily used as a binding material for other clay aggregates and is characterized by its lower refractoriness-cone 3o (165o c) to cone 321/2 (172o c), in terms of pyrometric cone equivalent, and an alumina - Al2o3 - content of plus or minus 31%. Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. Therefore, if reclamation is planned and carried out concurrently with mining, it is definitely feasible and

Bayer-process alumina hydrate becomes in turn the source of a host of special products in addition to the calcines that feed aluminum reduction cells. Though relatively smaller in tonnage, specialty aluminas serve important industrial markets in an exciting and growing variety. Production methods and applications are discussed for: (1) trihydrate as flame retardant in organic materials; (2) high-surface-area transition aluminas as desiccants and scavengers, catalysts and substrates; (3) calcines for industrial ceramics, refractories, and abrasives; and (4) tabular alumina for refractories, bed supports and other uses.

INTRODUCTION Conventional roof support methods such as mechanical and resin bolting provide adequate support for a wide variety of coal mine roof conditions. However, roof falls remain the single largest cause of death and injury in underground mines and seriously hamper production in many operations, demonstrating that these methods of roof support are not universally effective. One of the most recent and successful advances in coal mine roof control has been the introduction of the roof truss. Although past work on roof trusses (Gambrel1 and Haynes, 1970; Sheory, et al, 1973) shows little quantification of this support technique, numerous field examples have been cited where the truss effectively supported roof which could not be controlled by either mechanical or resin bolts (Kegel, 1969). The truss combines the advantages of both inclined roof bolts and post-stressing the roof. However, the full benefits of roof trusses will only be realized when design criteria to optimize support capacity are determined. The number of trusses required for a given roof condition can then be minimized, reducing installation time and making them economically more feasible. The purpose of this research is to develop roof truss design criteria based initially on laboratory studies of gravity-loaded multi-layered photoelastic mine models. Laboratory test results will then be modified where necessary following future field testing. The ensuing relationships should provide the field engineer with a reliable means of calculating optimum truss configuration, capacity, and spacing for a set of known roof conditions.

In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. Lightweight concretes date back to before the Roman Empire. The earlier concretes were made by combining a burnt lime for cementious material with pumice or volcanic rock for aggregate. Although structural value was limited due to its primitive nature, many structures were able to withstand the test of time. The rotary kiln expanded shale industry had a slow start that began around 1908. The industry was founded by Stephen J. Hayde of Kansas city, Missouri. Mr. Hayde noticed that the bloating effects of some aggregates were undesirable by the brick industry. Material of this type was considered waste and avoided in brick production, but he realized it had all the qualities and basic requirements for a concrete aggregate that would reduce weight and still retain structural value. It came into national attention by use in ocean-going vessels through a shipbuilding program undertaken by the united states Fleet Corporation. This research was brought about by the need to find a suitable material to replace high-grade plate steel due to a shortage created by World War I. The need prompted the government to supply the reserves that Stephen Hayde desired to continue and complete research into producing a uniform lightweight aggregate. His results pointed to the rotary kiln method for which he was granted a patent in 1918. One of the most famous and largest concrete ships built through this program was the U.S.S. Selma.
