"Due to the challenging geological environment of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF), a study was conducted to determine if any benefits would derive from the inclusion of resistivity data during threedimensional (3D) modelling of the manganese resource. This was achieved by estimating manganese resources from 2011/2012 drilling data and comparing them with manganese resources estimated from the same drilling data and resistivity data collected during 2013 and 2017.Both models were adjusted to limit their extent to the same 3D modelling space. Significant volume and tonnage differences were observed for all lithological units. The greatest differences were noted in the manganiferous zones of alteration – 7.200 Mt for the geological model versus 3.700 Mt for the geoelectric model.This study showed that the inclusion of resistivity data can reduce exploration costs significantly, as a direct consequence of the resistivity data allowing more accurate siting of boreholes. This decreases the number of boreholes, samples, and analyses required due to the 3D electrical delineation of mineralized areas prior to drilling.An additional benefit is the ability to more correctly forecast the net present value of an operation due to more accurate estimation of manganese resources and stripping ratios. This is clearly demonstrated by the estimated gross profit estimation of R409 million for the geological resource model versus R264 million for the geoelectric resource model.The addition of resistivity data can, therefore, reduce exploration costs and can increase confidence in geological and financial modelling. It would be reasonable to conclude that this approach could also be used for karsthosted massive sulphide deposits. IntroductionAccording to Corathers (2014) and Gajigo, Mutambatsere. and Adjei (2011), South Africa holds between 75–80% of global manganese reserves, followed by Ukraine (10%), Australia (3%), India (3%), and Gabon (2%). The known, land-based, manganese resources located elsewhere are estimated at 2%.The majority of economically important sedimentary manganese ore deposits in South Africa are situated in the Northern Cape Province (Gutzmer, 1996). Manganese ores of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF) were discovered in 1922, and the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) in 1940. According to Astrup and Tsikos (1998) and Gutzmer (1996), mining of manganese ore from the PMF ceased during 1989 in favour of the superior quality of manganese ore from the KMF."

The first joint colloquium between the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the South African Branch of the Institution of Metallurgists was held in Kelvin House on 23rd April, 1981. About eighty delegates registered, the majority being associated with the local branch of the Institution of Metallurgists. Types of Abrasion and Wear Professor A. Ball, of the University of Cape Town, gave the opening address, which he entitled 'Some Thoughts on Abrasion and Wear'. In his thoughtprovoking talk, he quoted some figures showing that, in the highly industrialized countries, loss by wear and abrasion might amount to about 4 per cent of the gross national product but, in the Republic of South Africa, it was believed to be about 6 per cent of the gross national productprobably associated with the massive influence of mining in our economy. Professor Ball described wear as being of three main types.

"Reliable and accurate metal transfer information during silicon tapping from an EAF is invaluable for decision-making and process optimization, while obtaining such information safely is a necessity.Elkem Thamshavn Norway, a producer of metallurgical-grade silicon, identified inherent safety problems with gauging fill levels in ladles using dip bars while molten metal was continuously pouring from a rotating EAF. Operator safety was a paramount concern, and an alternative automatic method of controlling the tapped fill level needed to be found.It was also considered that further benefits could be achieved such as monitoring the tapping flow from the EAF in order to identify any clogging, as well as the potential to use the live feed from such a system to assist decision-making regarding work around the taphole area.Agellis Group AB, Sweden, a company with over 30 years of experience in gauging molten metal levels in the metals industry, was able to design a solution for Elkem Thamshavn that would provide the required real-time process data while enhancing operator safety.This paper shows how the Agellis AB EMLI-L system was successfully installed at Elkem Thamshavn’s EAF continuous tapping area, how ladle fill levels were constantly monitored, and how full ladles were replaced by empty ones without the need for operators to be in the tapping area to take level readings. The results were used to compare the accuracy and reliability of Elkem Thamshavn’s current measuring methods with that of the EMLI-L system. The paper also covers how problems such as how to connect, run, and protect cables in and around the EAF tapping area, as well as connector and cabling survivability during the three day refractory pre-bake period, were solved. Finally, the paper discusses the potential production improvements, maintenance requirements, and data integration attainable through the installation of the system, as well as the major safety improvements that have been achieved."

The dual-electrode DC arc furnace, an alternative design using an anode and cathode electrode instead of a hearth anode, was studied at small scale using computational modelling methods. Particular attention was paid to the effect of two key design variables, the arc length and the electrode separation, on the furnace behaviour. It was found that reducing the arc length to brush arc conditions was a valid means of overcoming several of the limitations of the dual-electrode design, namely high voltages and arc deflection.

This investigation compares the gas adsorption behaviour and capacity of three bituminous coals from South Africa, of similar rank, by assessing the characteristics of the raw coal, as well as the resulting float and sink fractions (at 1.80 cm3/g) obtained by density separation of crushed coal samples. Calculations were also made to obtain the raw coal gas storage capacity from the weighted contribution of both float and sink fractions results, thereby permitting comparison with the analysed results of the raw coal. The study demonstrated that the clean fraction of a coal has the highest capacity to retain gas in the sorbed state, followed by raw coal, and lastly the sink fraction, and re?confirmed previous investigations that showed minerals to be inhibitors of gas adsorption and retention.

All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by the Council. Although the worldwide readership of the Journal results in a preference for papers in English, the Council treats papers in Afrikaans on an equal basis, but, to meet the needs of the majority of readers, an English summary of some 5OO to 750 words should be provided.

SYNOPSIS A technique is described for measuring the change in volume in a borehole drilled in a rock mass subjected to stress and strain. It is shown that the volumetric strain or change in volume provides a practical estimate of the the stress in the rock.

P.W.D. ROSTER OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS (Extract from a letter from the Secretary for Public Works) In recent years a large number of professional engineers has entered the consulting field. Although the names of most of these have been placed on the Department's roster of consulting engineers either as a result of representations made by the South African Association of Consulting Engineers or by applying direct to the Department there are still some who seem to think that canvassing through an influential person is necessary to obtain commissions from the Department. The Department's roster is open to all registered professional engineers who are suitably experienced to undertake consulting work and commissions are awarded strictly on merit. I shall appreciate it, therefore, if registered professional engineers who wish to be considered for commissions by the Department could be advised that they must apply, in the first instance, to be placed on the Department's roster. On receipt of such an application a questionnaire listing all the information required by the Department will be forwarded to the applicants for completion and returning to the Department for record purposes. All names which appear on the roster are taken into account when a commission has to be awarded, due consideration being given to factors such as geographical position, seniority, capability and compatibility. AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MINING ENGINEERS 1970 FALL MEETING AND EXHIBIT The Secretary for Commerce has passed to us a letter received from the American Society of Mining Engineers, reading as follows: "We would be delighted to have South Africa attend our meeting next year and to exhibit some of their mining equipment in our Technological Information Exchange. The 1970 SME Fall Meeting and Exhibit will be held in St. Louis, Mo., October 21-23, 1970, at the Kiel Auditorium. The AIME WorId Conference on Lead & Zinc Mining and Metallurgy will be an integral part of our meeting-and an added incentive to attend. It should be understood that we discourage the showing of actual mining equipment and encourage the manufacturers and suppliers to send their engineers to man the booths. We hope that the exhibits will endeavour to put across their story by means of photographs, drawings, models and literature, rather than by display of prototypes of the actual equipment. Large mining companies generally follow the distributed ownership corporate model, with a board of directors responsible for decisions that affect both shareholder value and stakeholders of the company. The board is simultaneously responsible for setting the culture and values of the corporation, which drive performance and priorities. Companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) commit to sustainable development in various ways, either by virtue of implementing the King Code of Governance 2009 (King III) and/or through their own public reporting on social and environmental matters. Many mining companies make public statements regarding their support for environmental stewardship, ethical behaviour, and fair treatment of communities. It is a local, regional, and indeed, global phenomenon that companies fail to deliver on these statements. Research was carried out through the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa in 2007, and followed up in 2012, regarding directors? understanding of sustainable development issues, the relative priorities, what is needed for ?radical change? to effect sustainable development, and what enables or constrains the latter. Pertinent findings of both surveys are presented in this paper, and it is suggested that ?on-the-ground? performance may be indicative of the nature of leadership and decisions in the topmost ranks of the company. The results indicated that environmental concerns fall consistently below social issues. Financial capital ranked most important, and while environmental issues are recognized as being of strategic concern for the long-term, they ranked as being the lowest importance of all ?Five Capitals? (Financial, Manufactured, Social, Human, and Natural). Social capital ranked second lowest, with black economic empowerment being the only high-priority social issue. There is also evidence that certain companies within the mining sector fail to recognize their absolute dependence on natural resources. Much is made in academic and popular literature of the need for a new type of leadership for the radical shift to sustainable development: at company level this implies therefore a new type of director. The research found that only 14 per cent of directors felt that board decisions are consistent with their personal values; while intentions are strong to behave ethically and serve sustainable development, actions to give effect to these intentions lag significantly. Respondents indicated that the top impediments to courageous leadership for sustainable development related to personal issues of maintaining the image of being a director, fear of appearing weak, fear of being a lone voice, and bowing to board-colleague peer pressure.

THAIN* Pre-European gold mining and working in South Africa is a tantalizing field for conjecture. Well over thousand sites have been identified in Rhodesia, but here we have had to reach double figures, judging by published accounts. Geologically, the Transvaal is less amenable primitive exploitation, but it difficult to reject the idea that the knowledge gained to the north did not have its influence south of the Limpopo.

Although remote sensing technology has been available for many years, it has rarely been used for monitoring mining activity. Recent studies indicate that remote sensing is also a valuable tool for managing and planning certain aspects of the mining operation. In this paper, we examine areal expansion of marble quarries and the affected vegetation over a period of 10 years in the Mugla region in Turkey, using geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques. Images captured by ASTER Level 3A01 (3D Ortho Data Set), Landsat 5, and Landsat 7 satellites between 2001 and 2009 were used for the analysis. Changes in the natural vegetation as a function of the production level in the marble quarry were calculated using the normalized difference vegetation index. According to the study results, land cover and natural vegetation decreased by less than 3 per cent and 1 per cent respectively between 2001 and 2009, following an upsurge in mining activity in the region.

A method is proposed to estimate the gold content of the ore in the size intervals during size reduction. The method uses the population balance model to trace the gold deportment through the size fractions and monitor the generation of liberated gold grains during the size reduction. The model is calibrated using batch grinding test results of a gold ore. A colloquium on solid-liquid separation was held by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on 23rd September, 1982, at the State Pavilion Auditorium, Milner Park, Johannesburg, to co-incide with the Electra Mining Exhibition. It was attended by about 150 delegates. Eight papers were presented covering: Geostatistics The School of Earth Sciences of Stanford University, the Centre de Geostatistique ofthe Paris School of Mines, and the Department de Genie Mineral of the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal are cosponsoring the organization of a 2nd NATO ASI (North Atlantic Treaty Organization Advanced Study Institute), under the name of 'GEOSTAT TAHOE 1983', to be held at South Lake Tahoe, California, on 4th to 17th September, 1983.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Given by Mr J. K. E. DOUGLAS, M.Se. (Eng.) (Rand) SYNOPSIS Lime is the most widely used and the cheapest chemical alkali known to man and virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture. Its use goes back to the earliest days of man and many ancient buildings and writings bear testimony to this. The manufacture of lime involves quarrying, crushing and screening of limestone and the burning of the sized stone in kilns of which there are several types. The earliest kilns were of very crude design and only in comparatively recent times have large capacity, automated and scientifically controlled kilns been developed. The history of the South African lime industry is largely that of the three main lime companies and their story is briefly told. No other material used in industry has a greater diversity of uses or more varied functions and lime has applications in most South African industries. The main applications are in the production of gold and uranium, iron, steel and ferrochrome, carbide, sugar and paper and for water treatment, agriculture and building. The Republic is well endowed with high quality limestone and the conclusion is drawn that many other minerals will have been exhausted before we run out of limestone with which to process them. The expansion of the lime industry has in the past kept pace with the requirements of industry and the future demand is expected to grow in parallel with the growth of these industries. Since the war this growth has been phenomenal and with our expanding populations and abundance of raw materials it should continue in the years ahead. Limiting factors are the shortage of skilled labour and the distance from export markets. Confidence is expressed that the challenges of the future will be met and that the lime industry will continue to make an important contribution to the growth and prosperity of South Africa. INTRODUCTION Lime, gentlemen, is known to all of you. Like myself, most of you have undoubtedly found it to be, on the appropriate occasion, a most pleasant flavouring for gin. But this lime, or rather its juice, was in earlier days more than just a flavouring. In the days of sail it was vital to the health of sailors as a deterrant against the scourge of all sea-going men-scurvy. It thus played a small but important role in the opening-up of trade routes around the world on which was based the original wealth of many of today's more advanced nations. I propose to address you on the subject of lime this evening, not the citrus variety I have just mentioned, but the most widely-used and cheapest alkali known to man, which, largely unsung, plays an even more vital part in modern industry than did its namesake in the development of inter-continental trade. In the time at my disposal, I propose to tell you something of the history, geology and technology of lime manufacture. Then I will briefly sketch for you the development of this industry in South Africa and indicate the role it plays in supplying the requirements of many of our important industries. Finally we will attempt to look into the future. The importance of this chemical alkali to our modern civilization is seldom fully appreciated-virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture, either directly or indirectly. It is one of those basic materials, along with iron, coal, sulphur, salt and petroleum without which industry and, in fact, our modern way of living could not exist. Fortunately, nature has endowed the world with a plentiful supply of the limestone from which lime is derived and most countries have deposits adequate for their requirements. As a result, not only has there been little trade in lime products between countries but in the past the widespread occurrences of limestone have set a pattern of numerous small plants each serving a limited area. These plants were generally crude affairs incapable of producing a quality product. It is not surprising that, in an industry comprised of small producers with limited financial resources and in fierce competition with each other, there was little interchange of information. Technological development was therefore slow and the industry tended to be regarded as a backyard operation. Its popularity was not enhanced by the fact that lime is difficult and unpleasant to handle if proper facilities are not provided. In recent years the lime industry has undergone very radical changes to meet the more exacting requirements of today's more sophisticated consumers. Only since the war have the larger companies emerged with proper management, highly mechanized plants and a scientific approach. HISTORY Lime was one of the first chemical reagents used by man and consequently lime burning is one of the oldest of the chemical industries. The use of limestone dates back to the stone age when primitive man used limestone to build fireplaces, construct shelters and make crude tools and weapons. It is probable that lime was first discovered by him when the stone in these fireplaces disintegrated to a white powder which he could use for decorative purposes. The first recorded use of limestone was when huge blocks of limestone were used to build the pyramids of Egypt in 4,000 to 2,000 RC. It was not long after this that the beauty of marble, which is in fact a limestone, came to be appreciated and it found wide application in sculpturing and for decorative wall construction. Originally lime, mixed with sand, was used mainly as a mortar for building purposes, the earliest record of its use for chemical purposes being in 350 B.C. in a report of the wreck near Marseilles of a ship carrying a cargo of linen and lime 'for its bleaching'1. Cato mentioned the burning of lime kilns in 184 B.C. and the Romans made extensive use of both limestone and lime for highway construction. Introduction and Background For many years people were aware of the vast deposits of titaniferous magnetite containing vanadium in the Bushveld Complex. From 1957 onwards some exploitation of this ore was carried out by Minerals Engineering of S.A. (later the Vantra Division of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation Limited), who produced vanadium pentoxide via a roast-leach process. Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy The Finance and Executive Committees of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy have agreed that members of SAIMM should be invited to register at all future CIM meetings at the same rate as CIM members.

This work evaluates and characterizes the impact of the support size and mining dilution of a block model in the operation and selection of equipment at an open pit mine. An exploratory analysis and geostatistical modelling of the grades assayed on a set of drill hole samples is performed, which allows constructing a grade model on a dense grid by means of a conditional simulation. The grades are then averaged to greater selective mining unit supports in order to proceed with the study and methodology. First, the metal-tonnage curves are used to analyse the loss of selectivity on the in situ resources caused by a change of support. Concerning the ore reserves and their mining sequence, defined in the pit optimization and analysis process, the same curves prove that the loss of selectivity is more accentuated. Second, the importance of the block boundary dilution produced during mining operations is assessed. Its value depends on the amount of ore in contact with waste, on the loading error of the equipment and on the ore loss/waste dilution criterion assumed by the planner. The dilution percentage and the differences between waste and ore grades become higher when the block size decreases. For these reasons, considering the dilution in the production plans makes mining a small support more constraining. An adequate delimitation of the orebody can improve the mining selectivity, leading to greater income. Finally, a study of the increase in mining cost that provides a zero difference in NPV between the different block size options is carried out, in order to determine the maximum increase in mining costs for which it remains profitable to mine at a smaller block size.
