This paper summarizes the works that the Research “Group of Ground Engineering”, belonging to the Mining Department of the University of Oviedo, Spain, has been developing in close cooperation with the Regional Mining Department, since 2001, in order to control and monitor an experimental underground limestone exploitation by the room and pillars method. The aim of the current research is not only the geotechnical characterization of the rock mass (by means of laboratory and site tests) or the instrumentation of its displacements and stress changes (using convergence meters, INCREX probe, extensometers and rigid inclusion cells), but, moreover, to undertake intensive monitoring and control of such pilot mine, which is mined exclusively in order to accomplish this research. The data transmission was made on line via Internet, to achieve a full understanding of the behaviour of the experimental mine, to access data from remote locations and to visualize results from a website. All the collected information becomes input data for several numerical models using finite differences under a program developed in the research Group, ALMEC. The simulation and a final economical analysis lead to a design of an underground exploitation, at production scale, for a resource that is traditionally mined by means of open-pit process methods that could be worked underground with less environmental impact. The main purpose achieved by this exhaustive analysis is the technical and economic viability of such mine, for their optimisation for a future productive exploitation.

"The aim of this paper is to enhance the understanding of the nature of mining input technologies in the South African mining industry. In the context of this research, mining inputs refer to input technology into the activities in mining engineering fields, which include mining-related production activities, rock engineering, mine ventilation, and mine transportation (handling of personnel, material, broken rock, and pumping). Input technologies in supporting fields such as geology, other engineering disciplines, human resource, procurement, finance, as well as downstream fields that include metallurgy, and marketing of minerals, were disregarded.The mining input technologies were divided into 12 nodes, and data from a sample of 150 first-tier mining suppliers was analysed. It was found that, in general, there is a high local content in mining input technologies, particularly as regards technical support services, artefacts, and machine technologies. This points to the presence of mining-induced backward linkages in the South African mining industry. The majority (83%) of companies that provide input technologies into mining are located in Gauteng Province, and relatively few are found in provinces where mining is concentrated such as North-West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Free State. IntroductionSouth Africa is well endowed with minerals, with more than fifty different minerals being mined throughout the country. For this and other reasons, mining is one of the crucial pillars in the South African economy and its importance is well documented (Robinson and von Below, 1990; Creamer, 2010; Department of Mineral Resources, 2015). In 2013, South Africa was the largest global producer of chromium, ferrochrome, platinum group metals (PGMs), and vermiculite and the second largest global producer of antimony, manganese, titanium, and vanadium (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2014). In 2013, the mining industry contributed 6.7% to South Africa’s GDP and was the fifth largest sector in the economy, as shown in Figure 1."

This paper describes the method of modelling rock mechanical problems on experimental models. Based on an actual experiment used as an example, assessment of the surface deformation due to undermining, the extensive possibilities of using a 3-D physical model and application results in practice are demonstrated. As part of a comprehensive risk analysis which was carried out into the effectiveness of the water barrier between South Deep and Randfontein Estate mines, the potential threat posed by large seismic events was assessed. The study covered several aspects. Firstly, an estimate of the maximum credible earthquake was obtained from a probabilistic analysis of the regional seismicity of the previous 25 years. Allowance was made for ?reservoir-induced? effects by increasing the estimate of the size of the maximum credible earthquake from ML= 5.1 to ML= 5.5. Based on available knowledge of the geological structure, the possibility of such an event occurring in the vicinity of the barrier pillar was estimated. The possibility of substantial damage to the barrier rock mass, resulting as a consequence of a large event, was assessed. The likely damage to the concrete control plugs installed in five tunnels that penetrated the barrier, which might result from a ?near-miss? by the largest possible seismic event or from a ?direct hit? by a smaller event, was also considered. It was concluded that there was a negligibly small possibility that the maximum credible earthquake could occur close enough to the barrier, and in such a manner, as to cause any damage to it or to the plugs in the tunnels passing through it. The possibility of serious plug damage occurring as a result of a ?direct hit? by as maller event was slightly greater, but still sufficiently remote as to be of no practical concern at all.

An efficient and portable mathematical model has been developed for simulating heat transfer in six-in-line slag-resistance-heating electric furnaces for smelting sulphide ores to produce base metals and platinum group metals. This model is a steady-state one relating furnace conditions and performances to various control and input parameters. Some transient effects occurring in electric furnaces are neglected for computation efficiency. This article describes the model development and modelling results. The present model is capable of predicting: (i) temperatures at various locations in a six-in-line furnace, such as slag bath, matte bath, solid charge, freeboard space, freeze lining, cooling water, and air gaps between solid material components, etc. (ii) freeze lining thickness, (iii)smelting rate, and (iv) heat loss rate, etc. A typical feature of the model is that it is easily portable to different application platforms and sufficiently efficient with execution times less than a few seconds. Therefore, it is possible to apply the model for online prediction and control of heat transfer and freeze lining thickness in industrial electric furnaces.

The location of a decline shaft portal can have far reaching implications if the geotechnical conditions are not suited for safe and cost effective excavation. Ideally the portal should be positioned in an area where the excavation requires minimal support and the portal can be formed in reasonably competent rock. In many cases, however, the shaft is linked to an underground mining plan and the shaft may have to pass through poor ground conditions. Determining the optimal position at which tunnelling can commence i.e. the portal, is critical and requires a thorough geotechnical investigation. Methods used to acquire information for the assessment of the ground conditions are discussed in this paper. Selection of the appropriate methods is dependent on the anticipated ground conditions, the phase of investigation and restrictions due to site access and budget. Non-invasive techniques are often used during preliminary phases and invasive techniques for the detailed investigation. The methods used during each phase of investigation are discussed. Two case studies are then presented to provide examples of the investigative methods used in two different environments. The first being a flat featureless site with thick soils and deeply weathered bedrock, while the second is a mountainous site with differentially weathered rocky outcrops. Based on these cases, it is clear that an understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the site is vital to the final geotechnical assessment. Liquidus temperatures in the Cr-Fe-Si system in the composition range representative of ferrochromium-silicide produced in South Africa J. C. M. Wethmar, B.Se. (Eng.) Rand D. D. Howat,U B.Se. Strydom, M.Sc., Ph.D. Alloys in the composition range of chromium, 20 to 50 per cent, iron, 10 to 30 per cent, and silicon, 25 to 55 per cent, were subjected to both differential thermal analysis and the classical quench method so that the liquidus temperatures of ferrochromium-silicide alloys could be determined. The results are presented as liquidus curves on pseudo-binary sections at various ratios of chromium to iron and as liquidus isotherms in the ternary section.

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated into the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research centre. In the second of a series of five colloquia with the theme Rescue 91 ..Survival Initiatives for the Mining Industry, the emphasis was placed on the harnessing of improved technology for the benefit of all the industry. The Colloquium was held at Mintek, Randburg, and attracted some 150 delegates and speakers from a cross-section of the industry. Eight papers were presented, and panel discussions were held to round off the morning and afternoon sessions. The purpose of the Colloquium was to allow mines and other groups to put forward innovative schemes in the management of technology that could be shared by everyone in their determination to ensure the survival of the gold-mining industry in the current difficult times. Logistic curves are used in the prediction of the primary production of tin metal from estimated worldwide resources. Such curves are asymptotic to the total cumulative reserves, which are a function of prevailing metal prices and total resources. The figures for tin resources are based on the findings of Robertson and of Brobst and Pratt, the latter authors including estimates of undiscovered deposits. It is suggested that tin production will slump from the present level to 100000 long tons per annum by the end of the century, but will reach a new peak of 200 000 long tons some thirty years later. It appears that production will never exceed 300000 long tons per annum unless substantial new resources, excluding those predicted, are discovered.

"SynopsisA number of important areas in nuclear fuel cycle, at both the front end and back end, offer ideal opportunities for the application of non-destructive evaluation techniques. These techniques do not only provide opportunities for non-invasive testing of e.g. irradiated materials, but also play an important role in the development of new materials in the nuclear sector. The advantage of penetrating radiation used as probe in the investigation and testing of nuclear materials makes X-ray and neutron radiography (2D) and tomography (3D) suitable for various applications in the total nuclear fuel cycle. The unique and different interaction modes of the two radiation probes with materials provide several opportunities. Their complementary nature and non-destructive character makes them most suitable for nuclear material analyses, analytical method development, and the evaluation of the performance of existing nuclear material compositions. This article gives an overview of the X-ray and neutron radiography/tomography applications in the field of nuclear material testing, and highlights a few of the success stories. Several selected areas of application in the nuclear fuel cycle are discussed to illustrate the complementary nature of these techniques as applied to nuclear materials.IntroductionDuring the development of new materials for the nuclear industry, materials testing and characterization are of the outmost importance to maintain safety standards and reliability. No compromise on safety in the workplace in any area within the total nuclear fuel cycle can be tolerated, and therefore most in-situ material characterization and testing is conducted by certified and qualified personnel schooled in destructive and non-destructive testing (DT and NDT) methods. Certification and qualification in NDT can be obtained through many training centres in South Africa in accordance with European, American, and other international standards (SGS, n.d.; SAIW, n.d.; African NTD Centre, n.d.)."

The Modified Zincex® Process, developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is highly flexible dealing with a wide range of pregnant leach solutions. No matter if those solutions are produced from primary or secondary raw materials, and/or are based on conventional leaching, pressure leaching, heap leaching or bio leaching the result is always high-purity zinc product. The zinc solvent extraction unit within the process is a very effective barrier for impurities and a buffer for the composition of the pregnant liquor. This unit achieves an extremely pure aqueous extract that can be converted into different final products. All of them are characterized by fulfilling the highest purity standards. Also, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of pregnant liquor compositions and various production capacities up to a zinc production limit over 150 000 t/a with a single solvent extraction plant.

The Witwatersrand reefs contain gold, uranium, and pyrite in the following average concentrations: 0,001 per cent, 0,02 per cent, and 1,7 per cent respectively. The paper discusses the flotation of pyrite to produce a s,ulphide concentrate, reviews work done on the production of gold concentrates, discusses attempts to produce maximum concentrates, and closes with a review of processes for the simultaneous flotation of these three species. It is concluded that high recoveries of all three species can be achieved only if a rougher concentrate of perhaps 20 per cent of the feed (by mass) IS produced, and it is suggested that reverse leaching (leaching before cyanidation) of this concentrate, followed by a cleaning flotation step for the recovery of the pyrite, would be more efficient than the routes employed at present.

The Mine Site Technologies, MST BlastPED ST is a wireless/remote blasting system used in more than sixty (60) mines (including two mines in Zambia and one in Tanzania) since its release in 2002. The system consists of a controller and signal tube initiator which communicate wirelessly using spread spectrum frequency. This technique ensures a robust and secure wireless link between the controller and the signal tube initiator. The configuration of the system ensures ease of use with all the instructions for initiating the blast printed on the equipment. This means little or no formal training is required to use the system. The technology enables you to have your blasting point at a distance of up to 4 km, line of sight (LOS), as opposed to the traditional distance of 500m from the blast. This ensures the blast takes place from a safer and secure location. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit of many years of international mining know-how in this technology as well as more recent local African experiences. There will be references to demonstration blasts done in South Africa, current users in Africa and elsewhere. Practical Return on Investment (ROI) calculations and references to safe blasting practice will also be included.

In the irradiation of ore particles by microwave energy preferential absorption of this energy occurs in minerals having specific dielectric properties (Bradshaw, 1999). This leads to a selective heating of the various components of within the ore particle matrix. The result is a differential thermal expansion of such components and the resulting induced stresses become ideally concentrated at mineral grain boundaries (Kingman et al., 2000). Dependent upon the relative composition of absorbent, opaque and reflective components this may lead to enhancement of the inter-granular fracture of the ore particles in the initial comminution process (Fandrich et al., 1997). The potential is thus a greater proportion of free mineral grain within the fractured ore particle that may lead to improvement in subsequent mineral separation processes. As the composition of the ore dictates the result of such a treatment (Kingman et al., 2000) it is essential to evaluate the response of each ore sample on an individual basis. This paper reports on results obtained from two ore samples: the one being the zinc ore from the Black Mountain mine (South Africa) and the other a pre-concentrated sample of handpicked cobalt?copper mixed oxide ore from the Gecamines (DRC). The equipment and methods used to simulate the comminution of the samples and evaluate the level of the value liberation will be described along with the results obtained. Using King (1975), Kanellopoulous and Ball (1975), and Gungor and Atalay (1998), a comparison between the behaviour upon microwave irradiation of sulphide and mixed oxide ores leads to conclude that while the technique (i.e. microwave irradiation) is appropriate to the zinc sulphide ore, it does not seem to lead to exceptional results for the oxide.

Tata Steel Limited which is Asia?s first and India?s largest integrated private sector steel company, as part of its vision to grow in related industries is also undertaking the Titania project. The project will involve mining, separation of ilmenite and other valuable minerals from the inland heavy mineral sands deposit in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The raw material will be beneficiated to synthetic rutile, titanium dioxide pigment and ultimately to titanium metal. The recently concluded feasibility study revealed that the deposit under consideration has 10.4%of total heavy mineral content and 15.2% slimes of the size below 63 µm, over an average sand thickness of 6.9 metres. The presence of about 15% slimes in ROM sand coupled with scarcity of water at the project site complicates the slimes handling/disposal system, requiring the development of an innovative, efficient and effective system for disposal of slimes. Mineral characteristics of slimes revealed the presence of kaolinite clay, which poses its own challenges in thickening/dewatering of slimes. This paper outlines the detailed studies conducted, including slime characterization, settling and thickening characteristics, and ge-technical studies to arrive at an efficient and effective slime handling/disposal system, with a view to plant saplings on the mined-out reclaimed land with species typically suitable to that environment.

The Stilfontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines, near Klerksdorp in the Transvaal, had accumulated a large amount of uranium-containing residue and, when the price of uranium rose in the 1970s, consideration was given to the possible recovery of this uranium. Preliminary tests showed that concentration of the uranium prior to leaching would not be economic. However, the pyrite in the residue could be concentrated by flotation, and the flotation concentrate could be roasted to pro¬vide both enough acid for leaching the uranium and a calcine from which the gold could be recovered. The feasibility study showed that a uranium operation of 270 kt per month would be most economically attrac¬tive, and a plant of that size was accordingly designed and built. In the first six years of its existence, the plant treated over 20 Mt of residue and produced about 3,5 kt of uranium oxide. During that time, the plant was con¬tinually being improved to make it more reliable and cost-efficient. This paper analyses the operation of the plant during its first six years from the viewpoints of its mechanical, process, and economic performance. The criteria on which the selection of the process was based are reviewed and compared with the actual performance of the plant, emphasis being placed on the leaching, solid-liquid separation, recovery, and purification stages.

Contribution by F.S.A. de Frey The authors are to be congratulated on a job well done by making, in their paper, such a pool of information available to mining engineers. I would like to comment on the following statement: 'As an alternative to the commonly used deep-level mining methods, consideration should also be given to pillar mining at great depths as a logical extension of the current methods. For example, a 75 per cent extraction Or Ryder's discussion The moderate levels if average pillar stress (APS) (320 MPa) are consistent with pillar stability. Squat 10:1 pillars should never 'fail' in themselves, and foundation strengths are also not exceeded (the stresses are well below the 2 ½ x UCS rule-of-thumb provided the foundations comprise normal strong 200 MPa quartzites). Authors' reply We thank Dr de Frey for his contribution to our paper on shallow hard-rock pillar systems. To considerable extent, we share his enthusiasm the potential role of squat pillars in deep-level mining, although we harbour reservations concerning strata control, mining economics, other issues. We agree wholeheartedly that further research, together with carefully planned field trials, is warranted in pursuit of this potentially highly rewarding concept. .

The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn't be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

Many open pit mines are now being mined at very significant depths, often at depths far greater than was originally planned. Even deeper open pits are also being planned, to depths that would be considered deep by underground standards. The heights of the resulting rock slopes are usually beyond the current experience and knowledge base. The exceptions are, perhaps, some very high and steep natural rock slopes. These natural rock slopes are also assuming greater significance owing to pressures of infrastructure development and consequent exposure of such infrastructure to the hazards of slope failure and landslides. Developments in road and rail infrastructure are also resulting in higher rock cuttings. Present understanding of the mechanisms of slope behaviour and failure for high slopes, and for slopes subjected to high in situ stress conditions, appears to be lacking. If the mechanisms of slope behaviour are not well understood, the validity of commonly applied methods of analysis of the stability of such slopes may be questionable. The papers in this specialist International Symposium, including papers on mechanisms and monitoring techniques, and case studies will contribute to the understanding of these issues. The Symposium has attracted good international participation, from both the attendance and authorship points of view. We are very grateful to all presenters and delegates for taking timeout of their very busy schedules to come and share their knowledge and we hope that all will benefit from this event.
