This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Mountain mining district is unique among the uranium-producing areas on the plateau. This relatively isolated mining district is in Emery County, Utah, on the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell, about 35 miles southwest of the town of Green River. The district lies just within the eastern escarpment of the San Rafel Reef - a rampart of rugged and tilted sandstone cliffs that encircles the highly eroded core known as the Sinbad Country. The presence of petroleum matter found associated with the ore deposits, the occurrence of uranium in various formations, and the structural deformation caused by collapsed features have aroused a great deal of geologic interest. Mine development on Calyx Flat is distinctive, in that the ore deposits are worked through 36-inch calyx-drill holes.

"1 Introduction The regrettable death of James S. Cunningham, Foreman Miner, attached to Bureau of Mines Rescue Car No. 2, while wearing a half-hour type oxygen breathing apparatus in a gasoline storage tank at Trinidad, Colorado, raised the question as to the possibility of gasoline vapors permeating the rubberized fabric of the breathing bags of such apparatus.It is known that most gases and especially certain organic vapors permeate rubber, by solution or a similar process. The rubber becomes saturated with the gas and if a concentration of gas is maintained on one side of the rubber sheet it slowly gives off gas from the other side. It of course takes some time for the gas to diffuse through the rubber and the length of time before it reaches the other side is proportional to the thickness of the rubber. The amount of gas that passes through per unit of area in unit time increases with the concentration of gas and also varies with the structure and composition of the rubber.It has been suggested that the gasoline vapor could not have penetrated into the interior of an oxygen breathing bag because the pressure is greater on the inside, but this is not true as the process of permeation by solution in the rubber is affected only by the difference in the partial pressures of gasoline vapor on the inside and outside of the bag. The positive oxygen pressure on the inside can only prevent the entrance of gasoline vapor through measurable holes, and has no effect on permeation by diffusion through the rubber."

Electrochemical machining sludge, a troublesome fluid waste product, was dewatered on a bench-scale basis by three alternative methods tested by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These methods would enable recycling 89 percent or more of the liquid content of the sludge and allow the dewatered solids to be dumped as landfill or processed further to recover contained nickel. Dewatering by vacuum precoat filtration was estimated to be the least expensive. Based on treating 20,000 gallons per day of sludge, precoat filtration costs were estimated as totaling 1.96 cents per gallon of sludge. Two options of an alternative method, comprised of acidification, reprecipitation, thickening, and filtration, were estimated to cost either 3.41 or 3.60 cents per gallon of sludge.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the theoretical stress distribution in the vicinity of explosively expanded rock bolt anchors independent of their bolts. Plane-strain solutions applicable to this problem were obtained by combining the field pressure with the uniform pressure that would be produced by vertically placed anchors having 2-, 3-, and 4-foot spacings. High rock stress which would be produced by an anchor was localized, as would be expected from St. Venant's effect, and increased as the field pressure decreased.

The Bureau of Mines Morgantown Petroleum Research Laboratory, with the cooperation of the Penn York Oil Company, cored the Dewdrop, Bradford Third, Lewis Run, and Sartwell sands in the Sartwell oilfield, McKean County, Pa. This report contains a review of the geology and depositional history of the field and an evaluation of the feasibility of secondary recovery of oil from the Bradford Third and Sartwell sands by waterflood or gas drive. Core analysis, geologic data, and electrical and radioactivity logs were used to evaluate the reservoir characteristics. Reservoir geometry, rock properties, fluid characteristics and saturations, and relative permeability-saturation relationships were used to assess the floodability of these two sands. The results of this study indicate that between 53,000 and 61,000 barrels of oil can be recovered by water or gas injection. The success of a waterflood or gas drive will depend on the field injection rates of the reservoirs comprising this oilfield. Following an economic evaluation, additional field work is recommended to further test the floodability of the reservoir.

This paper is a report on the relationships between petrographic composition, chemical composition, physical properties, and thermal behavior of banded bituminous coal. It describes the relationships between petrographic composition, behavior in various laboratory tests, and carbonizing properties of different petrographic types of coal that occur in relatively thick benches in a single bed of high-volatile A bituminous coal - the Hernshaw bed of Boone County, W. Va. Thin-section microscopic analysis and free-swelling index determinations of the thin-section samples were made of a standard column sample. A standard face sample, a representative channel sample, and representative samples of two prominent petrographic benches of bright and dull coal were subjected to chemical analyses and free-swelling-index, plasticity, dilation, agglutinating, low-temperature carbonization, and BM-AGA retort tests. A float-and-sink separation was also made of part of the standard face sample. The fractions from this gravity separation were subjected to petrographic and chemical analysis and free-swelling-index, plasticity, and dilatation tests.

Work in underground coal mines is repetitive and physically demanding. Workers commonly report a wide range of aches and pains. Management at one mine was concerned about increased reporting of aches and pains by roof bolting machine operators. An analysis of roof bolting tasks was conducted at this mine to identify early warning signs of cumulative trauma. Health and safety risk factors were identified and recommendations to reduce cumulative trauma exposure were provided. Recommendations addressed job procedures, equipment design, and worker awareness of risk factors.

In order to reduce waste and improve resource conservation, mine planning, and development, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the effects of multiple seam interactions associated with longwall coal mining. Field investigations were conducted at a mine located in Boone County, WV, where a longwall panel was operating subjacent to room-and-pillar workings in an overlying seam. To assess the effects of overlying workings on longwall headgate stability, the Bureau gathered various geotechnical information at this minesite. Headgate pillars and entries were instrumented and monitored to study their behavior during side-abutment loading as the longwall panel approached and passed beneath the overlying room-and-pillar developments. The two operations are separated by 800 ft of interburden, and although interactions between operations separated by this distance are uncommon, geomechanical measurements indicate the occurrence of an interaction. These measurements show that convergence on the headgate entries was most adverse subjacent to barrier pillars in the overlying mine. Pillar measurements indicate that side-abutment pressure increases were slightly greater than predicted values. Several factors related to both geology and mine design, believed responsible for this large interactive distance, are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines made electrorefining tests in inert-atmosphere, molten salt cells to develop methods for the preparation of high-purity molybdenum. Seven of the electrolytes investigated were suitable for the preparation of refined metal. The electrolytes were composed of molybdenum chloride in alkali chlorides or mixtures of alkali and alkaline-earth chlorides. An electrolyte composed of potassium chloride and potassium hexachloro-molybdate was selected for a larger scale, more detailed study on the basis of its ease of preparation, its ability to retain the molybdenum salt, and the type of deposits obtained. High-purity molybdenum in the 99.99-percent-purity range was successfully prepared as dense plate up to 80 mils thick and as dendritic crystals. The temperature of electrolysis and the current density were major factors in determining whether plate or dendritic crystals of molybdenum were obtained.

"INTRODUCTION The bottoming of the United Verde sulfide pipe has shortened the expected life of the United Verde mine to a matter of a few years. First located in 1876, this Arizona mine has had a long period of activity, having reached a peak production in 1929 of over 71,000 trans of copper. Through these many years of successful operation, a safety program has evolved in keeping with the proficiency developed in mining the ore body. The principal equipment in the catalyst plants at Ludwigshafen-Oppau was inspected and is presented in the form of flow sheets for the manufacture of four of the principal catalysts. The equipment is in many cases of special design rather than stock items that was built by the company and modified in the coarse of the growth of the high-pressure synthesis of hydrocarbons in Germany. It is believed that if the manufacture of catalysts were to be undertaken elsewhere, the selection of equipment for the operations involved could be made successfully from the guidance furnished by this rather general report. Five additional catalysts are described, also. II. CATALYST 5058 FROM FRESH TUNGSTIC ACID In a supply tank of about 2,000 liters capacity, 500 kg. of tungstic acid (W03.H2O) that contains about 92-93 percent of W03 is dissolved at 60-70° C. in 1,500 liters of mother liquor. The solution is-effected by stirring for about 1-1/2 hours. The mother liquor is obtained from a previous, lot of catalyst and is first adjusted to a concentration of 13 percent 1H3 by passing in gaseous ammonia. The solution is allowed to stand without stirring for 1 hour, then is pumped into the saturating vessel through a cloth filter (three-quarters hr. to one hr.). The saturator is purged with H2S and thereafter the solution, which has been cooled to about 75° C., is heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen sulfide with stirring to about 70° C. This charge is slowly cooled to 50°, and then more rapidly to about 20° C. (time of cooling 6-7 hours).

A vertical air shaft in the Birmingham, Ala., iron district was sunk with a circular cross section and lined with concrete at a relatively low cost to provide needed ventilation for an iron-ore mine. The method of sinking the shaft is described, and the costs are stated in mar-hours with a descriptive list of equipment and a statement on the size and use of temporary buildings. Preparation began May 2, 1955, and the shaft was completed at a depth of [680] feet by September 22, 1956. By October 1956, all temporary building and [aft]-sinking equipment had been removed. The total direct-labor cost for the operation, including preparation and dismantling, was 50,700 man-hours, or 30.2 man-hours per foot. Total rock and dirt removed amounted to 17,523 cubic yards (in place), and the shaft lining required 4,635 cubic yards of concrete to form a circular air shaft with an inside diameter of 16 feet.

ANFO blasting agents may undergo an exothermic reaction when they contact warm ore bodies that contain pyrite and its weathering products. The reaction is very fast at temperatures above 80° C. Urea, when present in sufficient amounts, inhibits this reaction at temperatures below 180° C. But urea-ammonium nitrate mixtures are very hygroscopic and, in certain climates, may be difficult to handle in the field. Reaction-inhibiting characteristics of three compounds were reported by the Bureau of Mines in 1979. Recently, the Bureau investigated the reaction-inhibiting qualities of five additional compounds. Mixtures of ANFO, pyrite, weathering product, and prospective inhibitors were slowly heated, under conditions simulating a hot borehole, to determine prospective inhibitor capability at temperatures up to ~175° C. Small-scale thermal tests of the same mixtures were used for verification and clarification of results. Two organic compounds, phthalimide and xanthine, similar in structure to urea, failed to inhibit the reaction. Zinc oxide and calcium carbonate were found inferior to urea, though zinc oxide raised the onset of reaction from 80° C to about 140° C. Only magnesium oxide was found to be similar to urea in its inhibitory ability at temperatures below 175° C. Based on results from analysis of quenched residues, the use of more than 5 wt-pct magnesium oxide is recommended.

The Bureau of Mines investigated palygorskite, a natural asbestiform material, to accumulate knowledge that might serve as a foundation for future synthesis of a similar material. Unit cell, chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, optical constants, and electron microscopy data were obtained. Selected palygorskite samples of bettor than 97-percent purity were used to obtain this information. Chemical analysis revealed the following formula: (OH2)4 (OH)2 Ca0.01Fe0.02K0 .c3Mg2.10A12.00Si7.93020.3.91 H2O. The optical constants for sodium light are a = 1.522; S = 1.530; ?=1.533; biaxially (-). The following orthorhomibic unit cell constants were determined: ao = 12.690 A, Z = 2, bo = 17.857 A, Dx = 2.327. co = 5.207 A, Identical diffraction patterns resulted from the three palygorskite samples that were studied. X-ray, chemical, DTA, TGA, and optical data were compared with literature values for similar fibrous materials. X-ray diffraction lines were indexed. Several electron micrographs were made to compare the structures of palygorskite and attapulgite with that of chrysotile. The micrographs revealed extremely short laths for attapulgite, very long flexible laths for palygorskite, and tubular structure for chrysotile.

"INTRODUCTION The object of this investigation was to demonstrate a satisfactory method of storing slack subbituminous coal in open pits in a manner,that would minimize the cause of the physical deterioration and would have a practical application.The storage of coal by industrial plants is to their advantage, since an adequate operating supplying of fuel is available at all times as insurance against transportation delays, shortages, and strikes. Furthermore, it is possible to participate in low seasonal freight rates and mine costs by permitting the railroads to utilize idle equipment and by taking advantage of the off-peak production at the mines. For a number of years, one of the larger beet-sugar companies operating in the Rocky Mountain region has taken advantage of the lower prices and seasonal production of subbituminous slack coal during the summer months and purchased a large proportion of its requirements for the annual winter campaign. This company, operating sugar-refining plants in the 1943 campaign, used 256,613 tons of subbituminous coal. Of this quantity, 166,636 tons was purchased during the off-peak season and stored for use during the winter. It is the practice of this concern to place coal purchased through the months of January to October in underwater storage for use in the beet-sugar campaign, which lasts from October to as late as, January. The beet-sugar refining ""campaign"" period starts immediately after the beginning of the beet harvest and lasts 60 to 70 days."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of laboratory experiments to test a cutting technique for hard rock using large-scale drag cutters. Cutting experiments were performed on rocks ranging in compressive strength from 10,000 to 27,000 Ib/in2, using large drag cutters from 3 to 6 in. in width. The tests were conducted on a special test apparatus, called a ripper tester, which made a curvilinear cut across the rock sample while measuring the cutting force acting on the drag cutter. The cutting method that evolved from these experiments is called ripper cutting, and its energy efficiency appears superior to all other large-scale mechanical fragmentation techniques. In addition, the method cre-ated very little dust, and the wear on the bits was negligible. A fragmentation system based on ripper cutting was then devised, and a large-scale test device was fabricated to allow full-scale laboratory testing of the system. The results of these tests will be published in future Bureau reports.

"The El Dorado copper mine is situated in the foothill copper-zinc belt of California, which traverses the western slope of the Sierra Nevada with unusual persistence from Butte County to Kern County, a distance of more than 300 miles. Although this area contains such important past producers as the Penn mine, Union, and others, a great part of the current production has been derived from smaller properties, which depend largely on premium metal prices for economical operation. The El Dorado mine is in the latter group, which constitutes an important source of metal in a national emergency.Exploration by the Bureau of Mines by means of eight diamond-drill holes Indicated narrow, intermittent lenses of copper ore along structures boo feet in length. The copper occurs in massive sulfides composed of chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor quantities of bernite. The sulfides have evidently replaced tuffs, which are interbedded with the Mariposa slates and shales.H. A. Weiler and Hal T. Hall, owners of the El Dorado copper property, requested an examination by the Bureau during the latter part of 1914. In December of that year an engineer of the Bureau of Mines visited the mine and recommended the project work undertaken. The purpose was to aid the owners in bringing the property into production of copper and zinc, which at that time was critically essential to the war industries.Complete factual data obtained by the exploration are embodied in this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G, Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Acknowledgment is made to A. O. This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. The method of constant compositions involves the determination of the time required for the attainment of a given conversion at various temperatures. Heretofore, it has been used in evaluating the energy of activation only. A development of the method, made in the present study, makes possible the evaluation of the functional dependence upon composition and the frequency factor in addition to the energy of activation. INTRODUCTION Kinetics of reactions are best analyzed in the light of the mechanism, energy requirements, and forces involved in the reaction. Such physico-chemical information is not often available in solid state phase transformations. The reaction rates are followed by changes in a physical property during the course of the reaction, and repeating the experiment at different temperatures permits the determination of activation energy only. The possibility of a complete kinetic analysis by such a purely "phenomenological" approach has been questioned.4/ In this report a method is developed making possible the evaluation of the functional dependence upon composition and frequency factor in addition to the energy of activation. The application of the method to a study of solid state order-disorder changes is demonstrated.

This Bureau of Mines report contains a tabulation of methane emissions during 1980 for all coal mines located in the United States with emissions greater than 0.1 MMcfd. Listed for each mine are methane emission quantity, location, and coalbed. The report also compares records of 1975 and 1980 and describes relationships between emissions in 1980 and the Bureau's coalbed gas content data on 11 mines.
