Relationships that may exist between assays and sample interval lengths when using unequal sample intervals in mine sampling have been investigated as part of the larger research problem of adapting statistical methods to the analysis of weighted average grades. The theoretical relationship between the amount of difference in the weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of the correlation coefficient between assay value and sample interval length was found to be linear. Numerous examples of actual field sample and assay data, which have been obtained by using unequal sample intervals, are documented, and the differences between weighted and unweighted average grades of ore and the correlation coefficients between assays and sample interval lengths have been computed and plotted on graphs. Differences between these actual field data and the expected theoretical linear relationship are examined. It is hypothesized that the use of unequal sample intervals in mine sampling is, in fact, stratified sampling in a statistical context. The sampler establishes stratification by selecting unequal sample intervals on the basis of differences in lithology, changes in rock type, characteristics of mineralization, or differences in metal content. Statistically} methods currently used in mine sampling, involving unequal sample intervals, fail to consider differences in the inherent variances in grade of ore within the various strata established by using unequal sample intervals. Consequently the strata are sampled with different precision. This difference in precision of sampling between strata may account for much of the deviation between the plotted points representing actual field sampling data and the theoretical linear relationship between the amount of the difference between weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of correlation coefficient between assays and sample interval lengths.

The obligation is not always fulfilled because of the hope that no occasion will ever arise requiring the use of such facilities, and, as time passes without the need for using them, a false sense of security is born in the belief that ""it can't happen here.""The disastrous fire in a mine in Ohio on July 5, 1944, again focused attention on the importance of escapeways in averting disasters and made it clear that one or more dependable exits must be provided from a mine and parts thereof where men might be trapped by being cut off from the regular travel route. This matter of always-having available travelable exits has been advocated for many years by the United States Bureau of Mines."

During U.S. Bureau of mines mineral investigations, in 1981 and 1983, no mines, prospects, or mineral resources were identified in the Little Sand Spring Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Placer gold values in near-surface samples from alluvial fans within or near the WSA contained no more than 66 cents gold per cu yd, at $400 per troy ounce gold price. Sand and gravel and carbonate rocks occur in large quantities, but transportation costs to distant markets preclude their classification as resources. Nitrogen, lithium, clay, pumice, perlite, aragonite, and agate occurrences in the WSA are small or low-grade. The Silvia Mine, adjacent to the WSA contains gold-, silver-, copper-, and lead-bearing shear zones which strike toward the WSA. INTRODUCTION The Little Sand Spring WSA, encompassing 33,500 acres, is approximately 56 mi east of Big Pine, California, by paved and graded dirt roads (fl;. 1). Elevations range from 2,600 ft in Death Valley Wash to 5,600 ft along the California-Nevada boundary. The nearest permanent facilities are at Grapevine Ranger station and Scotty's Castle (Death Valley Ranch), about 9 and 11 mi, respectively, south in Death Valley National Monument.

Ultimately, the most important product of a hearing conservation program is the prevention of hearing loss, not the amount of hearing protection that has been purchased or whether employees are attending their annual training sessions. Audiometric testing directly reveals whether hearing losses are actually occurring in a plant. With audiometric data, we can assess overall program effectiveness, alert workers of impending hearing loss, and reveal potential employer liabilities for compensable hearing loss. Without the ability to efficiently analyze audiometric data or produce effective reports, our programs become fruitless and unproductive. Consequently, ifaudiometric data are such vital end-products, then effective audiometric technologies serve as the prime architect and generator of these fundamental data. These technologies, consisting ofaudiometers, associated peripheral hardware, and database/reporting software, deserve our consideration.

In 1960 over 93 percent of the coal cleaned mechanically in the United States was cleaned in processes that utilized water or dense-medium suspensions of fine solids in water. Thus, in the process of removing deleterious ash-forming and sulfur-bearing minerals, another deleterious substance--water-- is added to the coal. The subsequent removal of the water from the coal, and the concomitant recovery of the coal from the water, is not troublesome in the sizes coarser than 1/4-inch. In the finer sizes, however, it is a difficult procedure that often costs more than the original washing operation. Because of the importance of liquid-solids separation in coal preparation, the Bureau of Mines has a continuing program of research in this field. The objective is to make available information on the performance characteristics of various types of equipment available for liquid-solids separations, thus promoting the wise selection of equipment for specific applications, and, thereby, more effective processing of coal. Results of work on flocculation as an aid to filtration5 and the sieve bend screen6 have been published. The present investigation of the screw-type classifier operating in combination with the cyclone was undertaken primarily because such classifiers are comparatively new to coal preparation and information on their performance is not available. The cyclone has become well-known since its introduction in this country by the Bureau of Mines in 1948.7 Use of the cyclone in conjunction with the screw-type classifier represents an attempt to provide the maximum recovery of solids at minimum moisture content.

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. As a start, to locate the dust source, dust samples and air quantity measurements should be taken at the following locations:

"INTRODUCTIONThe mechanistic details of the biological events leading to coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) are not yet fully understood, despite several decades of extensive epidemiologic1.2 and laboratory studies.2-6 Epidemiologic studies1.2 have shown, for example, that the incidence and severity of CWP differ markedly in the different regions and mines at comparable exposures, but laboratory investigations2-6 have demonstrated only partial correlation of the epidemiologic data with the differences in the mineral composition and the rank of coal mined. In particular, while epidemiologic data indicate1.2 direct correlation of the· prevalence and severity of CWP with the rank (i.e., % carbon content) of coal, this correlation has not been established by laboratory4'6 and animal exposure3 studies. In order to explain these results, in 1980 Artemov and Reznik' suggested that perhaps they arise from the fundamental differences in the surface properties of the coal. dusts inhaled by the coal miners and those used in the laboratory studies: while the miners inhale freshly fractured coal particles, henceforth called the 'fresh' coal dust, the laboratory studies generally utilize 'aged' coal dusts (i.e., dusts that have been stored for many days or even longer). Reznik and Artemov' used electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to show that the mechanical crushing of some Soviet Union coals generated organic free radicals and that the concentration and the decay times (hence the reactivity) of these radicals were higher for the coals of higher ranks. Since some of the radicals decayed within a few minutes in air, the authors surmised that while these radical species could lead to certain specific pathogenic reactions at the sites of mining operations, this might not be the case in the laboratory studies, due to the conventional use of 'stored' dusts which would be expected to contain significantly smaller free radical concentrations. This is consistent with the recent findings that, standardized, aged coal dusts exhibit minimal cytotoxicity. 8While the above mentioned work of Artemov and Reznik7 did suggest a possible new clue to the pathogenesis of CWP (i.e., the role of the coal based free radical species), no direct biological/cytotoxicity data were provided to show that 'fresh' coal dusts were, indeed, more pathogenic than the 'stale' ones. Because of the rather significant implications of the Artcmov-Reznik hypothesis to the understanding of 1hc biochemical mechanism and, hence, the strategies for the eventual containment of CWP, we have initiated a comparative study of the free radical formation and cytotoxicity properties of freshly crushed coal ·particles. As done by Artemov and Reznik, 7 we have used the ESR technique as the direct method of measuring the concentration and decay kinetics of the coal based free radicals. Our preliminary ESR studies on two Pennsylvania coals, a bituminous (carbon content 72 % ) and an anthracite (95 % carbon) coal, have confirmed the Artemov-Reznik finding that the crushing-induced free radical sites are higher on the coals with higher carbon content (i.e., higher rank).9-11 In the present work we describe our more recent results of a parallel study of the time dependence of the decrease in the free radical content of a freshly made anthracite dust (as measured via ESR) and that of the dust's cytotoxicity potential as measured by the extent of hemolysis of (sheep) erythrocytes. We have also investigated the effects of free radical scavengers on the cytotoxicity potential of the dust and deduce that indeed the free radicals could play a significant role in the initial events in the mechanism of the cytotoxic effects due to the inhalation of coal dust inhalation."

Provide an effective method for "soft" soldering aluminum and aluminum alloys using conventional tin-lead solder alloys and flukes. The Problem In the past, it was virtually impossible to solder aluminum and aluminum alloys using standard tin-lead soldering systems (solder and flux) due to the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film which forms instantly on aluminum and aluminum alloys when these are exposed to air. The tenacious and stable oxide film enables aluminum-base materials to maintain their bright luster. But the film also prevents the required wetting and spreading of solder on the substrate, causing the loss of adhesion between the solder and the substrate. This Bureau of Mines study describes a process for recovering nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and chromium contained in complex waste superalloy grindings that, for lack of an economical domestic recovery process, are being largely marketed abroad. The process, devised by laboratory scale operations, includes scrap preparation, dissolution of metallics in hot chlorinated acidic liquor, carbon adsorption, three successive solvent extraction separations, and selective chemical precipitations. Nearly 90 percent of the nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and chromium were separated and recovered as oxides, carbonates, and basic sulfate products.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments using four different coal types to determine the effect of attack angle and symmetric bit wear on airborne respirable dust (ARD) generated by point-attack bits and in energy consumption. Neither had a significant effect on ARD at the 95-pct confidence level, but bit wear had a significant effect (95 pct confidence) on specific energy (energy per gram of cut coal) for three coal types, Depth of cut was the most significant factor affecting ARD and specific energy.

Methods for estimating the amounts of nahcolite, dawsonite, and the sum of these two sodium carbonate minerals from oil-yield assay data are developed and evaluated for Green River Formation oil shales from the saline section of Colorado's Piceance Creek Basin. Derived statistically, these estimation methods depend on the fact that these minerals yield water and gas measured during oil-yield assay. The estimation procedures yield values for nahcolite and nahcolite-plus-dawsonite of sufficient accuracy for stratigraphic plotting and correlation, whereas estimates for dawsonite are more generalized. However, resource estimates and reserve computations for both nahcolite and dawsonite accurate within 10 percent of the real value are readily available by summing the mineral amounts calculated by the procedures presented. These estimation procedures are applicable to oil-yield assay data on core samples from more than 30 coreholes which have penetrated the saline section of the Green River Formation in Colorado.

The mine and treatment plant of the Teziutlan, unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., are located at Aire Libre, in the District of Teziutlan, near the northwest edge of the State of Pueblo, Republic of Mexico. The property is leased from the Teziutlan Copper Co. The town of Teziutlan is the terminus of a branch railroad starting from Oriental Junction or the Mexico-Jalapa-Veracruz narrow-gage system of the National Railways of Mexico. A branch line 18 km in length from Teziutlan to Aire Libre belongs to the Teziutlan Copper Co. and is leased and operated in conjunction with the mine.

The most promising candidate for the recovery of alumina from non-bauxitic sources is the leaching of clay by HCL acid followed by crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) by hydrogen chloride sparging. Hydrothermal precipitation of boehmite ( ?-A100H) from aluminum chloride solution will simplify the process, will reduce energy consumption and will eliminate corrosion problems involved in calcination of ACH to obtain alumina. This report summarizes the results of Phase I of a program to study the precipitation of boehmite from AlC13 solutions. The amount of boehmite precipitation from dilute A1C13 solutions (5 wt%) is . negligible below 200°C. Above 200°C the precipitation increases with increasing temperature approaching 40% at 300°C. Addition of HCl acid to the dilute A1C13 solution even in small quantities drastically reduces boehmite precipitation. Solution impurities such as Fe, Ca, Mg, or Na substantially promote the precipitation of boehmite. No precipitation is observed from concentrated A1C13 solution (30wt%) representing the leach liquor.

Determine the appropriate spacing and alarm levels for carbon monoxide and smoke sensors used for fire detection in underground coal mine conveyor belt entries. Background Fire represents one of the most severe hazards in underground coal mines. Early-warning fire detection in underground coal mines is essential to successfully implement and execute evacuation and control measures. Both carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors have the ability to provide reliable early-warning capability, provided that they are spaced properly and set at the appropriate alarm levels. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a series of large-scale experiments where a small coal fire was used to ignite a conveyor belt at air velocities of 0.76 to 6.1 m/s. The test configuration was purposely designed to model a worst-case fire scenario for fires that develop within conveyor belt entries in underground coal mines. During the tests, CO and smoke levels were continuously measured to determine alarm times and alarm levels as the fire intensity progressed. The data from these tests indicated that for a given sensor spacing, the time to reach a preset alarm threshold depends upon the belt entry air velocity and cross-sectional area. Analysis of this data resulted in the equations and nomographs for CO and smoke sensor spacing, and alarm levels contained in Bureau of Mines RI 9380, "Fire Detection for Conveyor Belt Entries."

The Bureau of Mines studied pressure changes in coal pillars by using encapsulated hydraulic pressure cells to measure relative changes in stress developed during mining. The data indicate that (1) abutment stresses were detected when the pillar line is within 42 to 100 feet, (2) vertical pressure increases as coal is mined in the pillars, (3) at first pressure is higher at the edge of the pillar than in the core, but as mining progresses, the higher pressure is measured in the core of the stump, and (4) in the two instances where lateral pressures were measured, they remained lower than the vertical pressures during pillar extraction. The data also indicate that the mean vertical pressure increase, 6P, in a pillar is roughly related to the percent of pillar extracted, A, by the empirical parabolic equation

Much interest has been shown recently in the possible utilization of dolomite as a source of magnesium metal, a large production of which is deemed essential for national defense. As a result, many inquiries have been received by the Bureau of Mines as to sources of dolomite. This report has been prepared primarily to augment the Bureau's present published information on the occurrence of high-grade dolomite deposits in the United States. To supplement such data, the report also defines dolomite and related rocks and describes their properties and uses. The uses are covered in some detail in Information Circular 6524 entitled "Utilization of Dolomite and High-Magnesium Limestone," published in 1931 but now out of print. All essential data on uses contained in that report have been incorporated herein, and. have: been supplemented by data developed during subsequent years. The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. When the criterion for control of scale prevention on the evaporating surfaces is made the conditions in the concentrated boiler water, then this control becomes an exact operation amenable to an accuracy commensurate with all other operations in the boiler room. The responsibility in boiler water conditioning, however, includes more than clean surfaces. Corrosion in feed lines, economizers and the boiler is a function of the condition of the later, and must be controlled. Steam line and turbine blading deposits must be obviated by the system of conditioning. By the chemical treatment employed, the amount and character of noncondensable uses in the steam must be controlled in accordance with the intended use of the steam. All. in all, the responsibility in boiler crater conditioning ends not with the entrance of the water into the boiler but with the passage from the boiler nozzle of steam, the dryness and rarity of which are defined by the uses to be made thereof. A clearer conception of the scope of boiler water conditioning can be obtained by reference to a diagram of the surfaces (Figure 1) at which it functions. Consideration of this diagram leads to the following outline for the problems of boiler water conditioning: (a) Prevention of scale formation on surfaces (1) In contact with water but at which no evaporation occurs. (2) At which evaporation is occurring.
